“Aye sir…and yes, I’m used to doing the work, but I’ll adapt.  Should I
find my direction requires some hands on demonstrating, I’ll do my best
to let the engineering team do the heavy lifting.” Matrix replied.

"Excellent.  someday remind me to tell you about my first adventures on
the Illuminar and learning the difference between Engineering and
Operations," Gregory said.   "You are dismissed."

Gregory watched the two of them leave.  He made a mental note to keep
checking in with Scott as he worked through the transition from
engineering to operations.

(USS Illuminar - Turbolift - Operations Ensign Victoria Morganthall - 1415)

“So...you’ll have to keep me honest as I learn operations. The commander
is right, I’ve been in engineering since I left the academy, so hands on
is all I know. How do, I as a lowly ensign, direct someone who outranks
me?” Matrix said.

"Well, without Operations coordinating things, you can only imaging the
messes that would happen.  Wait till you see a inter-department fight
for access to specific resources.  Those are fun, let me tell you," the
Ensign said.  "As for directing someone, well, its your job.  Just be
nice, and if you need, invoke Commander Gregory's name.  Hard to argue
if the message ultimately comes from him. He'll back your play.  Some
hands on is ok, heck most operations staff started as engineers. Better
for us to know the systems and when things are SNAFUed."

"No I meant that as and engineering or…former engineer we didn’t really
pay that much attention to the operations OOD. Kind of got in the way of
the real work. Kind of like an architect telling an engineer how to
construct something…ship building for example. They want it to look a
certain way but looks don’t make things run."  Matrix said.

"At the end of the day, Operations oversees.  We are more foremen than
workers.  That is what engineers are," she smiled.  "So let's get to work."
