(Qo'noS- High Council Hall - Chancellor Morek and Councilor Pe'tah- 1300)
It had taken time to gather the leaders of the great houses and not all
were able to come on such short notice. Morek, from his perch and chair,
looked satisfied as he stood to his feet, these would do…. for now.
The great chamber was lit by torchlight and braziers and not well, Kling
stood staunchly behind their traditions with the same single-mindedness
they took to the battlefield.
The Chancellor's voice broke the silence roughly. "All here are aware of
our glorious victories against the green blooded schemers since the death
of their empire. The houses and Empire have grown stronger and richer on
their resources and labor. Those who stood before us have met their end or
become vassals. All must ultimately fall before us as our warriors rebuild
the glory of Kling. Who here would deny this?"
“Who would be so foolish as to deny that which is in front of their very
eyes,” a voice called out. It was Pe’tah of the House of Nogga. Nogga had
been a smaller house before the fall of the Romulan empire. Now they had
grown immensely as the Klingon empire grew. Pe’tah was a taller than
average Klingon and his word carried the weight that his imposing figure
showed. “But we cannot stop looking past our triumphs without realizing
that others may be doing the same as us. Who might be gobbling up the now
free territory from the other side.”
Morek waved his right hand and a holo map appeared, hovering in the center
of the chamber. The star field showed the battle line of the thlingen which
was far forward in the center due to scouting patrols, to the left and
right gains were more modest. Blanketing this amount of territory with
warriors and materiel was impossible, each segment had to be properly
subjugated and fortified before moving forward. Not to mention more ships
had to be built both to replace losses and expand the base of power. The
expansion was at a halt for now to allow for these preparations.
"Some of the schemers band together believing their shared strength will be
enough to hold off our advance." He gave a derisive laugh. "But such is a
doomed gesture. You also know of those who call themselves the Romulan
Republic." The borders of this confederation of worlds was outlined in
blue. The center of the battle line had penetrated close to that border.
"We have lost ships and warriors to their mines while they hide behind them
and use the time they have gained to prepare. But their preparations have
included seeking not only aid against us but benefactors they believe
powerful enough to challenge us."
Ahnek from Duras stood up with a growl. "It is madness! There is none
powerful enough to challenge us. None of the Romulan factions can stand
against us and their power wanes day by day as we take over their sectors.
Their only possible suitor is the Federation and they are too soft to stand
against us."
"It IS the Federation." Morek snarled. "We have intercepted communications
between them. The schemers have made overtures through one of the
Federation vessels. They seek closer ties to the Federation and perhaps
future membership. If this happens we will be pressed upon two sides by
them. The Kittomer Accords have brought peaceful cooperation between us and
the United Federation of Planets in the past but shall we allow it to stand
when they try to isolate us to one corner of the Alpha Quadrant?"
"We cannot!" Morek howled. "We cannot stand idly by while that body grows
at our expense. The Federation has no claim on any part of Romulan space
outside of their border. They must know that we will not stand idly by
while their power grows. We claim by right of conquest, not through
dealings made in the dark!"
Ahnek slammed his fists upon the small table before him. "Let them try!
They lost many important worlds including the warrior race that gave them
spine! They will fail and their world will be ripe for plundering as well.
Let them come!"
Morek turned to Ahnek with a grunt. "Need I remind you that one of their
ships defeated three of yours within your hunting ground?"
Pe’tah chuckled, “Perhaps the house of Duras is not as strong as they think
they are.”
Ahnek whirled toward this unwelcome barb. "And you believe your ships would
have done better? This Illuminar suffered the attack of three at once and
destroyed two of my best. Had not one escaped we would know nothing of this
shielding they have long been working to develop. Duras did what was
necessary to warn you of the danger."
He turned his gaze around the room. "Laugh if you wish but they had taken
considerable damage before the first of mine was destroyed. They may be
able to stand against two but no more. And we have many more ships than the
Federation. In time we will overcome their advantage and then where will
they be? AT OUR FEET! Conquered by the Klingon Empire!"
There were many shouts of joy around the council chamber.
Morek smiled, he had pushed them to the edge and they were eager to fight.
But first there was another matter. He waited until the howls died down
"And now that you understand what may come there is something else."
All eyes turned toward him
"The Federation has approached us about sending an envoy, the timing shows
that they are aware of or suspect our intent."
"Who do they send?" The question from one of the Great Houses hung in the
air.
Morek turned to Eshag of the house of Martok who was glaring at him through
the haze.
"The ship Illuminar and its crew."
