Mission: Prelude
Day: 1
Stardate: 2446.03.23
(USS Illuminar – Penn and Teller Lab – 3XO/CMO Quinna Solice, Penn and
Teller – 1000)
Quinna knew it has been a while since she saw her two favorite physicists.
She wondered if they wanted to visit Earth. She would invite them to stay
in her Hampton Estate. She thought she would take time and show Michael
the spoils of her heritage. She walked around with her coffee thermal
filled with milk and went to pay a visit to the guys.
Teller was sitting at a bench, tool kit at his side. On the bench was a
collection of tubing, wires and other parts. To one side was a cylinder,
with tubing coming out of the top. He was busy connecting the one to the
other.
Penn picked up a tool and tapped Teller on the shoulder with it. The
Telarian would need it to connect the tubing to the copper pipe. “Temba,
his arms are open.”
Quinna stood outside the physics lab. She made noted to ring the chime as
she was not sure what they would be doing in there. She waited patiently
while finishing up her milk.
The door opened, and Teller smiled, “Temba, his arms wide,” he said to the
doctor as he looked away from his project. His hand slipped and finger
touched the heating element of his system, "Zinda, his face black, his eyes
red,” he said in surprise.
“I have not seen you in a while and I wanted to see what you two were up
to. You two are my favorite scientists afterall.” Quinna said as she
entered the lab. “Whatcha doin’”
“The most interesting man in the world, staying thirsty,” Teller replied
with a grin.
Penn chuckled, “We decided that our… molecular transformation and
fermentation device required an upgrade so we can experiment with higher
levels of hydraulic functional groups binding to saturated carbons.”
“An endevour worth making. I approve.” Quinna raised her cup in a here
here.
“We might even give it some flavor this time,” he said raising his voice
slightly and looking at Teller. ”Gorday Ramsey, with the Beef Wellington.”
The Tamarian chuckled and nodded. Sitting back, he motioned to a chair.
“Temba, his arms wide,” he said to the doctor.
“So, Dr. Quinna, what brings you to our humble abode?” Penn asked, offering
her a glass of brown, opaque fluid.
Quinna waved off the drink, “Just checking in and see how you two were
doing.” Quinna found her way to sit down.
Teller looked at Penn, and back at the doctor. Pushing a button, he locked
the door. Switching to standard, he spoke. “We’ve been doing lots of data
crunching from the anomaly and from the results of the scans of those that
were taken off the USS Rhyne,” he raised his hand, “Mostly blinded, we
didn’t take too much other information.”
“That lead my esteemed colleague to postulate the idea of trying to capture
quantium energy as a means to generate biological energy, but, but we are
in the early stages of hypothesis building and testing, which is why I am
tinkering, but he’s the driver on the biological quantum side.”
“What can I do to help?” Quinna asked looking between the two of them.
Penn looked at her, contemplating what she will understand, and decided
that she was one of the more intelligent members of the crew and would most
likely ask for clarification on anything he was about to say, so he just
began to talk. “Stop me if you need clarification on anything. You
understand that quantum mechanics is the fundamental theory that describes
the properties of subatomic particles, atoms, molecules, molecular
assemblies and possibly beyond. Quantum mechanics operates on the nanometre
and sub-nanometre scales and is at the basis of fundamental life processes
such as photosynthesis, respiration and vision. In quantum mechanics, all
objects have wave-like properties, and when they interact, quantum
coherence describes the correlations between the physical quantities
describing such objects due to this wave-like nature.” He paused. “So far
so good?”
“I may be blond, but I have the brains of a brunette. Keep going.” Quinna
quipped.
Penn smiled and turned to Teller, “Margaret Houlihan, the real Margaret
Houlihan.”
“You can call me Hot Lips.” She said with a smirk.
The Benzite laughed, which never really resembled a human laugh but more of
an angry noise. “I thought that was just a rumor.”
“Temba, his arms wide,” Teller agreed.
“All you have to do is get me drunk and the rumors become reality.” Quinna
offered.
After a pause, “Anyway, I digress. Much like plants use quantum mechanics,
inexplicably, I might add, to create their own energy for growth, I have
postulated that could we convince other, non plant, organisms to produce
enough energy to to do things like regrow limbs or even nerve cells.”
He moved over to Teller, hiding his right arm behind his back and holding
Teller’s left arm with his own. “Let’s say, for instance, in a fit of
justifiable rage, I were to…” he swung his right arm around and brought an
imaginary ax down pretending to cut off his partner’s arm, “ “accidentally”
cut off Teller’s arm.” He used air quotes around the word accidentally.
“Even modern day medicine could not regenerate all of the complexities that
he currently possesses with his arm. Nerve ending would be irreparable.”
“And at best, an artificial limb will be fitted and even at that they are
not 100% as functional as the original arm. In fact the best ones give
only 87.3% work than those original limbs.” Quinna stated the medical
facts.
“Exactly!” Penn said enthusiastically. “What if we could convince the cells
that they were able to replicate what there were at a quantum level. How
would that affect the future of medicine?”
“It would be a game changer. Because it could only expand from there to
include replacement organs.” Quinna showed her excitement. She stood and
flared her arms, “The possibilities are endless. Growing a limb would not
be anything like cloning. So what do you need from there? Bio samples?”
Quinna placed her empty cup on the table.
Penn laughed, “No, my dear, not quite yet. But perhaps I will need some…
volunteers?... eventually. In photosynthesis, respiration and vision, the
processes are fundamentally quantum mechanical. They show energy transfer
and electron transfer in a framework based on surface hopping. The dynamics
described by these models are often ‘exponential’ and follow from the
application of Fermi’s Golden Rule. As a consequence of averaging the rate
of transfer over a large and quasi-continuous distribution of final states
the calculated dynamics no longer display coherences and interference
phenomena. I want to see if we can create that coherence. I think for
now, we just need access to your medical labs. If you wouldn’t mind.”
“I can do that. I will have a designated lab set for you.” Quinna said.
“Let me ask, in theory, would this work for someone who has lost a limb
years ago, or would this be for fresh amputees?”
He looked over at Teller and shrugged, “Unsure. Teller hasn’t finished the
math.”
Teller looked up and chuckled, “Tom Lehrer, in base eight,” he said.
“So, Guys, can I talk to you for a moment. I am having an unusual
experience going on. I am expecting a baby and well…” Quinna handed over
a PADD with what medical she had with the jump in gowth.
Teller took the PADD and eyed Quinna. “Temba, his arms wide,” he said,
“Coyote catches the roadrunner. Sylvester and Tweety.”
Looking at the PADD, he began to download the data. Grabbing a seat, he
put it next to Quinna and motioned her to sit. A look of concern crossed
his face as the data streamed across his screen.
“Dorothy, to Toto. The Yellowbrick road.”
Penn nodded and said, “Flying monkeys on the road to Oz?” Then he turned
to Quinna as he moved to look over Teller’s shoulder, “How does Mr. Weston
feel about this news?”
“He is supportive and assures me that he is not going anywhere.” Quinna
began to chuckle. “He does have another woman in his life.” Quinna then
did one more thing. She handed a envelope to the guys inviting them to
stay at her Hamptons Estate on Earth. She then left the lab.
After Quinna left the two scientists looked at each other for a moment,
then giggled. They ran to their rooms and began to pack, each in their own
inimitable manner.
