Mission:  An Ending and A Beginning

Day: 1

Stardate:  2446.03.16

(USS Illuminar- Deck 5- Sick bay - 2/O&COps CMDR Dieter Gregory and SFI
Michael Weston - 1200)

Michael walked into sickbay feeling very discontent.  The meeting this
morning had not gone as he had expected or hoped.  As far as he could
tell, nobody was satisfied with the conclusion.  Dieter’s return, and
the moment of his return, although a wonderful turn for him, but his
manner and the wedge that his return seems to have driven between
Michael and Leeza was less wonderful.  Now he was feeling as though he
was out of Leeza’s circle.

In days gone by he would have been grateful, and told himself that it
was all for the best, since he would not be there long, and she was
better off without him.  But that was not how he felt.  He felt
excluded, and looked down upon from both of them.  The six months that
Dieter was incapacitated had changed Michael Weston, and he didn’t
really want to go back to who he was before.  He shouldn’t have to
explain himself to anyone, especially for looking out for the best
interest of Leeza.  Even now, while he was excommunicado, he still
wanted what was best for Leeza.  Was that what love was?

But he hadn’t come to sickbay to argue with Dieter.  He hadn’t come to
hash out whatever issue may have cropped up.  He was here to tell him
how the meeting ended, and find out how his CO from the Rhyne was feeling.

Kylee stepped over to him. “Don’t get him worked up,” he warned.

“Not in the plan,” Michael said with a nod, and stepped into the room
Gregory was occupying.

“You don’t look so bad,” Weston said jovially.

“I must look better than I feel,” he said, “but all told, better awake
than not,” Gregory said.  “How did you get past my guard?” he asked.

“I promised not to get you excited,” Michael said. “Besides, I know I’m
not your type.”

“I guess that secret squirrel training really paid off.  For  your next
trick, help me get out of here.”

Michael chuckled and moved to sit on the side of the bed, “I may be
good, but I’m not that good. Stev has super knock out pellets or
something like that.”

“Michael, you brought the Rhyne and it’s crew back from that Universe.
That was an amazing feat and I hope to hear the story sometime.  I owe
you a debt that I don’t think I can ever repay.  All I can say is that
if I am ever in a scrape, I hope that you are right there at my side.”

Weston patted him on the leg, “Well, you were kinda there for me too. I
just hope that you really were unconscious every time I came to talk to
you. Otherwise I may have to put you back in a coma.”

He pulled out a PADD and put it beside Dieter, “I thought you might be
wondering what you missed so I downloaded the mission reports on this
PADD. Be kind when you read the Elaysian report.”

“Thank you.  Since my captor plans to keep me here against my will, the
reading material is welcome.  What was decided after I so abruptly left
the meeting?”

“Yeahhh,” Michael said, “I figured that would come up. Let’s just say
nobody left satisfied.  For now, Leeza will stay with the Hammons.”  He
saw the look on Dieter’s face. “Let’s be honest, we know that’s for the
best.  Right now neither of us are ready for Leeza full time. We are not
cut out of her life. We can see her anytime we want, and she can see us
anytime she wants. Of course, right now she doesn’t want much to do with
me.”

“She is three.  She will get over it.  Sometime.  We know that she held
the secret pretty close, and well we never fully learned about Pel.” he
said. “At least I set SPOTS to stay with her.  He’ll keep her safe,” he
said. “And yes, you’re right neither of us are ready to

“As for the other stuff,” he shook his head, “I don’t know. They want to
go through their diplomatic channels but I have serious doubts about
that success. Even with Riven Mias.”

“Well then, we better have a plan B.  Shall we become pirates?” he chuckled

Michael tapped the PADD, “Day 178, Weston declares himself a space
pirate. I even grew a beard.”

Gregory raised an eyebrow.  “I guess we’re halfway there.”

He smiled at the memory of the crew’s reaction after they had “helped
themselves” to the supplies from that Cardassian convoy. “Pirates
without a ship.”

“Quinna and Stev are going to look into the medical issues of a three
year old with a symbiont and see what kinds of treatments they can come
up with. That’s my big concern right now. Whether we stay or whether we
leave that will still be a problem we’ll need to solve.”

Gregory sighed. “I hope our two doctors can get us some biological
answers.  If not, we can find some other resources.”

“We’re going to have to,” Michael said.  “The alternative is not an
option.  If there was one thing I learned on the Rhyne, I don’t take
failure very well, and I won’t sacrifice anyone.”

“That, Mr. Weston, is something you have no control over.  Everyone
controls their own fate and has to make those calculations for
themselves.  I know, and it’s the dichotomy of command,” Gregory said,
grabbing Weston by the shoulder.  “So we better make sure we have bugout
bags, and choose a shuttle so that we can deactivate its command
overrides and transponder.  Get us to Bajor and find a ship there to get
ourselves lost in.  Since I’ve got nothing but time till my keeper lets
me go, I’ll make a list of 10 planets that might be suitable for us to
run to.”

He paused, “We better read P’Rah in, he has to make his own choice as well.”

Michael nodded, “I’ll take care of that.”  He patted Dieter on the leg.
“I guess I better go check on our girl.  I just wanted to fill you in.”
Then he stood up, and looked down at his old CO.  “I really am glad to
have you back, my friend, even if it created a wake of destruction in
your path.”

“Destruction brings change,” he said, “For good or ill.  Go make up to
Leeza, she needs you more than you know my friend.”  He watched as
Michael left on his mission, one easy, one much harder.
