NRPG - Repost for corrections

Mission: Death in the Shadows
Day: 9
Stardate: 2446.02.09

(USS Illuminar - Deck 14 - Security -  COS Lt(jg) Keung Lee, PO3 Jared
Boyles, Hercules Dever, Steve Hammons, P'Rah and Cadet Ksensia - 1415)

Devers listened to the Chief and glanced at the members of his team -
Boyles, Collier and Ekoice.  Seemed the Chief was keeping to separating
Boyles and Hammons, but knowing the kind of trouble they could get into,
he didn’t blame the Chief. Grabbing a PADD, he looked over the
schematics of the K’t’inga battle cruiser.  It really would help
planning the infil, especially with the sensor reports that Operations
was uploading to the PADD.

A simultaneous strike at the engine room and the bridge was the most
expedient manner of controlling the ship.  Now if they would beam over
gas grenades to these locations to help disable the crew stationed
there, that might make securing the ship easier, and allow them to then
focus on mop up.

Cadet Ksensia Lin came into the room at a run. The half bajoran/trill
was rather pretty looking, with long red hair that was tightly braided,
then tucked into a low bun.  Her battle uniform was precise and she
looked rather pleased, yet fierce. This was her first real away mission
and she was ready to have some fun. She had missed out on the last away
mission because she had blown off doing all of her coursework and found
out the hard way that those stupid simulations mattered. She had applied
herself and was available for this mission. She took the phaser rifle
and then the hand phaser that was handed to her.  She wore her personal
blades on her belt, the Damascus folded steel daggers in their supple
real leather sheaths.  She was looking forward to this. “Sir? Cadet
Ksensia. Which team am I on?”

Hammons walked in with his game face on. The knife Alaya had given him
hung to his left and his sidearm on his right. He picked up a phaser
rifle and checked its charge as he hefted it. "Another day, another
boarding action. At least a Klingon ship should fill the bill as a
pirate vessel. There's no telling what kind of savages we might find
over there."

Ensign Andy Taylor was behind Hammons in line to pick up his rifle.  “I
would expect that you'd have a lot in common with savages, Mr.
Hammons.”  He smiled as he thought it funny to call the older Hammons
Mister.

Chief Lee who had decided against everyone wearing the tactical Battle
suits mainly they were not really designed to operate in a closed
environment especially in a ship.  They were cumbersome and got in the
way.  Also he had discovered that apart from the fact that they ate up a
lot of energy, the user tended to depend on the tech rather than their
own personal skills and talents.

There was an air of anticipation in the room as the team members in the
room were actually looking forward to the boarding action.  Lee studied
his PADD to work out the allocation of the teams and their mission.
Cadet Ksensia had eagerly asked which team she was on.  Lee wondered how
she would cope on her first away mission.  He would brief the team.  He
called out to Lt Trei who was about to depart to the Armoury to be
issued with a weapon to wait.

“Our mission is essentially to board and secure vital areas. We need to
secure engineering,  cargo bays and take the bridge to  recover the
computer and navigation systems on the ship.   Hopefully, they might
provide useful information about their activities, weapons ports of
call, buyers and so on. The schematics shows there are volumes of space
on the map which are not detailed. There could be secret compartments to
hide contraband.” explained Lee.  “Alright these are the teams with
their call signs.

Alpha - Team leader Devers with  Boyles, Collier and Ekoice.  Your task
is to secure the Cargo bays and the immediate surrounding decks.

Brave - Team leader myself with P’Rah, Taylor, and Mali will be securing
engineering.

Charlie- Team leader Hammons, Ksensia,  Koksv, and  Shosi.  Lee glanced
at Shosi who was Andorian and hoped that Koksv, a Klingon,  should work
well together.  At least Lee  was confident that Hammons was capable
enough to handle those two particular species.  “Your role is to secure
the bridge.  Lieutenant Trei will be joining your team.  Her job will be
to download the computer data on the bridge.  So she must be protected
at all costs!”.

Backup team Delta  will be led by Assistant chief of Security, Carol
Linnis. Her team will consist of Ekoice, Lannox, Jucowe.  You probably
won’t be needed but I want to cover all contingencies.

I have no data as to what the opposition will be like. Scan your
surroundings and identify cover points, possible ambush points and
escape routes. Always stay within your teams, stay within your
designated areas,  work together, look after each other.”

"Yes sir but as Lieutenant Trei is a superior officer I assume she will
have command unless and until my expertise is needed so I'll defer to her."

Koksv asked “What about the rules of engagement?”

“You are authorized to use all necessary means at your disposal to
secure the ship” said Lee after a moment pause.  “I suggest now that all
teams get together to discuss and plan your strategy.  If you need to go
to the armoury to be issued with any other weapon then go ahead.”

Shosi was unsurprised by the Klingon’s question.  Koksv should be in his
element on a Klingon vessel given the clearance to use “all means at his
disposal.”  She said under her breath, “I hope we have enough body
bags.”  She was not a fan of the Klingon desire to fight at the drop of
a hat, but did have an appreciation for some of the Klingon battle
strategies.  She wouldn’t need any further weapon assistance from the
armoury, since they did not carry weapons that surpassed her own
personal items.

Lee raised his right fist in the air and shouted “Oorah”

Devers looked at Boyles and rolled his eyes.  ~what are we the marines?~
he thought uncharitably

P’Rah patiently stood there and listened.  He was ready with a side arm
and a phaser rifle.  He closed his eyes to all the pep talk that was
going around.  He had one mission and only one mission.  Secure
engineering with the team.  He could do without the comradery.  He was
not the G.I. Joe type.  He was the get in and don’t die type.

Lee thought about the newbies on the teams. Their first action. All the
teams were now in discussion with each other.  For some strange reason
which Lee couldn’t work out, Charlie 1 was having their briefing outside
the Security Centre in the passageway.  Alpha 1 sat near the Security
Monitoring Centre. In the meantime, Lee took his team into his office
for his briefing and showed the schematics of the engineering area to
Anju Mali, a former Starfleet engineer before she changed careers.  She
would have the technical knowhow to secure the consoles of that department.

Lee knew next to nothing about the engineering side of any ship.  He was
fortunate enough when he was at the Academy that he was exempt from such
classes because of the time he came from.  After all, youngsters in this
age already knew the practicalities of warp drive technology!!

“What is the possibility of switching off the gravity and life support
systems in engineering or are they controlled from the bridge?” asked
Lee to Mali

Anju turned from looking at schematics and she said “it can be done from
engineering.  If the teams are overwhelmed by opposition then I can
switch off the gravity.  I mean we are trained to fight and move in non
gravity environments.  As for life support, we can cut off all the
systems but that won’t do anyone any good.  We’re not wearing
environmental suits.”

Lee nodded and glanced at P’Rah and Taylor.  “It is vital that we don’t
destroy the engineering consoles and to ensure that Anju can be provided
with cover so she can do her job.  Once we secure engineering, perhaps
we can concentrate on  nearby passageways.  We don’t want any pirates
trying to re-take engineering.”

Taylor frowned and shrugged. Being an explosives expert didn’t really
come in handy if you’re not planning on blowing things up. However if
they ran into booby traps he’d be the man for the job.

“Passage ways, check,” he repeated. “Blowing things up, uncheck.”  He
looked over at P’Rah and said, “He’s no fun anymore.”

“No worries, I have a soft touch and a long tail.”  P’Rah commented.  “I
can whip it against the pirates as much as the next guy.”  He knew how
to work within his parameters.

Taylor laughed, “I’m sure that tail has a lot of uses. Makes me want one.”

Devers gathered alpha team members and retreated to a corner to discuss
strategy and loadout.

"Expect choke points and crossfire. Clean out knots of enemies by
hitting them with stun grenades first and watch your six. We don't have
enough people to properly consolidate territory and there are over a
hundred life signs aboard the cruiser. We hit and move fast. Don't get
bogged down or you'll get cut off. Once we reach our objectives we can
cut off portions of the enemy forces using force fields through main
control and isolate them for cleanup." Hammons recited the list from
memory. "Standard blitzkrieg tactics, hard, fast and clean. If you get
cut off transport out or you'll get mown down by reinforcements."

"Oh, one other thing." Steven looked around the group. "They aren't
going to be looking to stun, kill when you have to. These guys are out
for blood and have been from the beginning. Better to make them dead
than to get made dead."

Shosi nodded, it was sound military advice. “An old Andorian proverb,
the only way to make sure your enemy won’t come back is to make sure
they can’t come back.”

Devers looked at the cadet, “Cadet Ksensia Lin, report to the alpha team
on the bounce. Crewwoman Ekoice, head over to Delta with PO Lannis.”

The mixed species cadet nodded and headed over to the Alpha team. She
was so excited and even though it was just the cargo bays, that was as
important as other areas on the ship, or so she kept telling herself.
Skill wise, she was a decent marksman and a better sniper. She would
need to set up someplace high to take out the enemy targets. She
reported to Devers, “Sir? I’m Cadet Ksensia.” She was an interesting mix
with the bajoran nose and trill spots. “Lt. Lee assigned me to your
team, Sir.”  ~To keep me safe~. She thought resentfully but it did make
some sense.

Devers looked over the cadet.  He still disliked the idea of assigning
cadets to boarding operations.   “Cadet, I am not your drill instructor
or training officer.  Can the Sir, I work for a living,” he said in the
fine tradition of NCOs around the galaxy.   “What are your hand-to-hand
combat ratings?

She blinked in confusion but nodded. “Passable. I’m a better sniper so
that was my focus. Get me up high and I’ll take out whatever you want
dead. I’ve also got some medic training.  I wanted to be a Starfleet
marine when I grew up. And then there was no marine force recruiting.”

Lee called the teams to attention.  “I just want to say before you
continue with your team briefings.  If it is at all possible, do not
exhaust your phaser levels or conserve projectiles like bullets. Select
your targets and do not fire indiscriminately.  As for grenades..no frag
grenades.  It’s too risky.  You are likely to blow a bulkhead and being
sucked out into space is not a nice thing!  Use stun and flashbangs.  It
is likely that the ship’s lighting could be damaged so vision will be
limited. So the rule is if you recognize anyone in the middle of a
firefight from the ship, you need to quickly identify yourself and shout
out ‘friendlies!”.  I personally want to avoid being the target of
friendly fire. The other thing is..again if possible. Capture alive
anyone who looks like they have some sort of authority.  Keep
communications to a minimum..no unnecessary chatter. You’re not on the
playground!. Use hand signals where possible.  This is really for the
benefit of the newbies among you but it is a good reminder for the rest
of us.  Alright get back to your briefings.  Everyone should have a
clear idea of what their roles are and to gel together as a team. I want
no loose cannons.”
