Mission: A Cure Delayed
Day: 6
Stardate: 2445.10.30

(Vulcan - ShiKahr- Juice Bar– Bohb and CO- Captain Sekal- 0711)

“Wow, I still can’t believe it,” Bohb shook his head. “Saleke has a mate…
and a child. But no longer a child." He raised his glass, took a drink and
continued.

“So a crew member needing medical care at the Nivar Institute? Must be
pretty serious. Was it the little Vulcan girl. I haven’t seen her coming
or going for the last few days.”

Sekal nodded but volunteered no information about the patient other than.
"She is in my tactical department."

“I hope that she will be alright,” he said sincerely.

"The process has a high success rate." Once again he skirted the details.

“So the fleet, eh,” he went on. “What happened? I mean, everything had
gone to, well, hell in a handbasket all those years ago. When your dad
left I was certain that it would snow in the Forge before he put on a
uniform again. Ktell must have been pretty damned persuasive.”

That was not sacrosanct ground and he could expound upon it at length. "My
father had a number of issues with Starfleet in its former iteration. Its
highly politicized nature and its treatment of a life form which he had
grown close to. You are correct in that it would and did take extreme
measures to attract him back to the Fleet. He was quite content to remain
with the Vulcan Defense Force with the project. The fact that I chose to
enlist in StarFleet had no bearing on his return. It did however factor
into the posting he accepted."

“The Hades.” Bohb said with a dreamy look in his eyes. “I can only imagine
what they did to it to make it their flagship. Some kind of transwarp
slipstream drive to get you some place before you had to be there.”

"There may be some misunderstanding. The Odyssey Class USS Republic is the
fleet flagship and commanded by Ktell. An Admiral is considered of flag
rank and his command of a ship is noted as bearing his 'flag'

As for what happened to cause the cascade of events… you have no doubt
heard of the attack on Earth called colloquially the devastation bomb. The
CinC of the Admiralty was found complicit in the conspiracy and the rest of
the Admiralty other than Jana Bell and Admiral Janeway were sacked due to
corruption. The posts of the admirals were filled with veterans of the 52nd
fleet due to their unquestioned loyalty, experience and capabilities."

“KTell was a lot of things,” Bohb admitted, “but he was honest and loyal
beyond any reproach. And then your dad, Vice-admiral?”

"Pardon me for the misunderstanding. Commodore Remae was removed from the
Admiralty by the former CinC and chose to remain a Commodore during the
replenishment of that body. It would seem he did not relish returning to
the desk you spoke of." He cocked an eyebrow. "Vice-Admiral yes. There are
only 2 true Admirals at this time. They will no doubt move up in time."

“It’s so much politics for a simple engineer like me,” Bohb said.
“Admiralty has caused problems for the Federation for a lot longer than
that. I still remember the internal war caused by Admiral Doenitz. As
they say, you can never trust anyone over the rank of captain. However, I
hope your father can change that. It almost makes me want to come back.”

Sekal took a drink of the frosty juice, a drink favored by Saleke before
him and added to his diet due to the side effects of other drinks he had
tried. "Research and Development which is his posting was the department I
was leading on Mars in an effort to return the fleet to relevance. We have
caught up to and in some ways surpassed them. The quadrant is vastly
changed from the way you remember it but we now have the tools to
accomplish our exploratory push and expand our knowledge once again. And
more breakthroughs will come in time. We no longer have a battle fleet like
the former 52nd but have returned to the root of the Fleet's former aims.
And my Father is not the only one who has brought a return of honor to the
Admiralty. The Fleet you once knew is gone and a more enlightened one has
taken its place."

Bohb nodded. Sekal had given him some food for thought. “So tell me
Research and Development, did they ever perfect that multiphasic sensor
array to reach into subspace bands without disturbing or getting the
attention of anyone living in those bands?”

"No, that research is still ongoing. However we have had other
breakthroughs in subspace technology you might be interested in.
Unfortunately I can not discuss them as they are classified and the
foundation of my ships warp engine technology."

“No, no, of course not,” Bohb apologized. “I let my curiosity get the best
of me.” He took a deep breath. “I can’t say that I don’t miss the
exploration and development of new technologies. I’m afraid that I’ve been
reduced to little more than a handyman, repairing old and broken down
transports that make their way here. Although I have a pretty good track
record. But I suppose you can’t go home again, can you Captain?”

Sekal cocked an eyebrow at him. "I deduce from what you have spoken that
you left the Fleet for much the same reasons my father did however as I
noted those conditions have changed. I do not know your age nor your
species' lifespan but it would appear you are still strong and vital. And
StarFleet at this point in time is in need of experience to mix with the
exuberance of youth. A former member of the fleet in good standing would be
welcomed back."

Bohb blinked, like having a glass of water thrown in his face. Then he
laughed a roaring laugh. “Strong and vital? Well that was what the female
said to me last night.” He looked at the placid face of the Vulcan. “That
was a joke my boy. I had no carnal knowledge of a female last night.
Magillans are a hardy species. I will admit that I am at a more advanced
age, but our lifespan can be around 200 years. Although I am in the second
half of my life I still have all my faculties.”

There was a beep from his bag. He pulled out the energy converter and
smiled at it. He tossed it to Sekal. “I’ve been working on this for a
couple of weeks. A phased energy converter that can now produce 8 times
the amount of energy than it did when it was made. When I found it it was
non-functional. A present for the son of Saleke.”

Sekal took a good look and turned it over in his hand before looking back
at the Magillan. "Did you amplify the quantum output of the coil or modify
the induction algorithm?"

Bohb looked at Sekal as if he were about to give a trade secret, then
smiled. “A little of both. I replaced the coil with a rotating inverter
that can amplify the quantum output from the rectifier, and then made a few
minor changes to the code of the algorithm to accept a continuously
adapting modulation of the amplitude. That was the hard part.”

Sekal took another one drink, considering as he did so then studied Bohb
for a few seconds after setting the glass down. "This is exactly the sort
of experience and thinking that StarFleet needs. If you would consider it I
will be here at Vulcan for another ten days." He then raised the glass
again. The chill of the juice greatly aided his internal adjustments to the
rising temperature. But drinking too much could be detrimental. He stopped
to allow it time to warm. "And I am available for discussion during that
time period should you wish to talk further."

Bohb looked at his own glass. He brought it to his mouth and poured the
entire contents into it and swallowed. He smiled, enjoying the sensation
of the flavor and the coolness against the acidity of the ingredients.

“I would like that very much,” Bohb said. “You have definitely given me a
great deal to think about while I am repairing the food processors of a
Ferengi scow later today. Starfleet eh. It certainly seems like the times
have changed. It would be good to be back on a ship I can call my own.
You don’t have a chief engineer that’s a pain in the … posterior, do you?”

"Not currently." Sekal then cocked his head. What he had spoken could be
considered joking in some circles. "The technology on the ship has advanced
somewhat. It might be a stimulating challenge to get up to speed on it."

“The technology is a challenge I can live with,” Bohb smiled. “I can get a
bit… excited and if someone irritates me greatly I may want to pull their
arms off. But if you get hold of my records you will know that I have been
through “sensitivity training” so I most likely won’t actually do it.”

"You can be certain I will make perusing your records a priority." Sekal
finished the last of his drink then set the glass down and stood up. "I do
not believe that this will be the last time we will speak but.." he lifted
his right hand. "Live long and prosper Bohb. And thank you for the
conversation."

Bohb slapped the table hard , shaking it then stood up. He raised his hand
to give the best approximation that he has ever been able to achieve to a
Vulcan salute.

“Thank you Captain Sekal,” he replied. “I look forward to our next
meeting. If you communicate with your father, give him my well wishes.
I’d love to see him sometime.”

The Vulcan nodded. "I speak with him quite often and also work closely with
the department when at Mars. Should you become a member of the crew you
would not lack for opportunity to meet him. For now I must take my leave
before the temperature rises too greatly. I am still reacclimating myself
and need to check in at the medical center."

“Indeed, it’s not the heat that’ll get you, it’s the arridity.” He
chuckled at his joke. “So long son of Saleke. “

With that he turned and left.

Sekal quirked an eyebrow at the play of words, shrugged then left the
building at a fast pace to get to the Nivar Institute. The half hour spent
in conversation had been well invested.
