ILLUMINARNRPG: What is a cooperative writing game?

Star Trek Freedom touts itself as a cooperative writing game but I've seen
some confusion over the years as to what that entails.
I've seen CO's who rule the plot with an iron fist and the players are
merely marionettes dancing to his tune. You will not find that here. The
missions we create are merely frameworks for you to build a magnificent
mansion around.
I've seen players openly tout an agenda which everyone falls into lockstep
with thinking that's the way it's supposed to be. Not here!
When something passes into your hands you are encouraged to add your spin
to it. An example:
I am the one who stabbed my character, yes I did and left a knife hilt
sticking out of his chest. Once that happened I passed him on to medical to
do with as they willed. Was the CO going to die? Not likely since I would
have put the brakes to that but they did an excellent job of thinking what
could go wrong and dealing with it.
Massive blood loss? Check
Nicked artery? Check
Punctured lung? Check
Heart stopped for a ... well a HEART STOPPING moment? Check
And that gave me a lot of ammunition to post around. The entire operation
was well played and Sekal is recovering having actually had a hand in it,
(Restarted his heart) and a lot of other work to concentrate on while in
the healing trance.
Another has been handed to medical. Cellular disruption due to a rigged
transporter. Will he live or will he die? That's not for me to decide, our
medical staff will canoodle on the final outcome.
The same thing cuts across the entire ship. As Tim said the first rule of
Improv comedy. You add your bit then pass it along to another who does the
same.
In this way we weave the intricate tapestry of the story. Well done and
thanks to the medical department for their efforts and example.
Cheers!
