Mission: Space was cool before it mattered

Day: 1

Stardate: 2446.04.25

(USS Exeter - Personal Quarters - 2O/CEO Commander Keira Merek &
Investigator Commander Simon Landers- 1135)

BEEP BEEP [Incoming transmission, labeled Priority One]

The tones and computer voice roused Keira from her melatonin induced
slumber. She turned over to see the Starfleet Command Crest emblazoned on
the monitor on her desk. She blinked and rose to her feet. She made her way
over to the desk but not before the computer signaled of the incoming
transmission again.

BEEP BEEP [Incoming transmission, labeled Priority One]

“I’m moving you stupid thing.” Keira snapped at the computer.

[Command not recognized.]

“Blow it out your exhaust port.” Keira snapped a second time, now within
arms reach of the desk.

[Command not recognized, do you require assistance?]

“No, I’ll take the transmission here at my desk.” Keira said while rolling
her eyes.

[Command authorization verification required.]

“Authorization Merek-Six-Three-Seven-Gamma-Tau-Epsilon.” Keira said while
realizing she was out of uniform. It being her authorized sleep cycle, it
wasn’t out of regs, but seemed weird it was her first priority message and
she was wearing a sports bra and shorts. She promised herself next time to
remember the shirt.

~Well, random sentient, happy birthday, I guess.~

Just in the nick of time she caught where she threw it over the chair out
of the corner of her eye. She yanked it off the chair just getting her head
and neck through the appropriate hole before the screen changed from
Starfleet emblem to the face of a human man, he was of course in uniform.

=/\= Commander Merek. I am commander Simon Landers, part of Starfleet's
internal affairs investigation unit. =/\= The blue eyed human officer said.

“Commander, what do I owe the pleasure of being woken from my sleep cycle?”
Keira asked as she guided her left arm in the shirt.

=/\= I am contacting you under the authority of Admiral Sullivan with some
rather unfortunate news I'm afraid. =/\=

~The short one with no personality/~ “I’m familiar with Admiral Sullivan,
what is her news?”

=/\= Last night at precisely 2310 we received word of a double homicide
and suspected home invasion at your residence in Ketchikan Alaska. Your
Neighbors, Mr. and Mrs. Hughes were found by their niece when she arrived
at their home , visiting from out of town. The young woman noticed the
lights were on at your residence and figured they were there checking on
things for you. When she entered your residence she discovered their
bodies.=/\=

Landers paused as he could be seen on Keira's screen accessing a padd.

=/\= You wouldn't happen to know anyone , possibly another resident of the
community, who had a problem or issue with them?=/\=

By this point Keira was fully in the shirt but pantsless off screen. “No, I
can’t imagine the Hughes having any enemies, they’re the sweetest couple.”

=/\= Since the homicide took place in the residence of a starfleet officer,
starfleet is helping local authorities with the investigation. There was
also a substantial amount of vandalism and destruction to the interior of
the home. =/\=

“What can you tell me about the damage?” Keira asked. ~Did Rayna’s
inheritance go up in smoke?~

=/\= Typically protocol wouldn't permit sharing such sensitive information,
but nothing about this is typical Commander Merek, the last recorded home
invasion and homicide of this nature on Earth occurred nearly seven months
ago. To say that is a rare occurrence on earth is an understatement. =/\=
Commander Landers added as he sent her archived images of the crime scene.

Keira accessed the files sent and looked them over as Landers spoke.

=/\= As you can see Commander Merek your residence was heavily vandalized
and the bodies of Mr. and Mrs. Hughes were arranged on the floor surrounded
by broken model starships, spread around them in a circle. This appears to
have been done with a rather sadistic intent.=/\=

Landers remarked on the images he shared with Keira. The bodies of her
neighbors were laid side by side in the center of the dining room , the
house around them trashed in a chaotic fashion. Some of the more up close
images of the victims showed the signs of death by an energy based
projectile weapon.

“Have you tried reconstructing the scene?” Keira asked.

=/\= We tried to recall the scene using a matter displacement
reconstruction method, but the scene appears to have been scrubbed. It
seems someone went to great lengths to ensure that. Almost as if they knew
we would attempt such a method of forensic insight.=/\=

“Inside man?” Keira asked.

=/\= Unlikely, the investigation is leaning more towards someone trying to
carefully cover their tracks, but Unlikely doesn't mean improbable so with
that being the case we are pursuing every probability of the
circumstance.=/\= Landers replied with distress in his tone.

As Keira listened to Landers who seemed like he was resenting Keira’s
questioning, she saw something in one of the models. The only model that
was fully visible in the images she was provided. The D-7 or K’Tinga as the
Klingons called it was broken at the boom, one third the way back from the
bridge. ~Exactly where you would attack the ship, separate the command
module from all of its power sources, severely crippling the counter
attack. They’d have whatever energy was still in the forward disruptors and
whatever torpedo was still in the tube.~

“Can I see the rest of the images?” Keira interjected.

=/\= The rest of the images? Commander Merek, The ones I've shared with you
display an adequate visual of the scene. Are they not ?=/\= Landers asked.

“Because I think I’ve spotted something that might help you.” She reasoned.

=/\= Help me ? What do you need to see ?=/\=

“You sent me all the images of the bodies, I want to look at the ships.”
Keira said.

=/\= The models ? They were laid around the bodies, we've already noted the
significance of their placement.=/\= Landers replied.

“Humor me? One Commander to another?”

He nodded his head and sent her more images of the broken model starships.

=/\= They are broken as you can clearly see from the previous images.=/\=

Keira moved the images around. "The Galaxy class was the Yamato, it was
dropped yes, but see the holes? Right where the main computer core is on
the old Galaxy class. The Yamato was destroyed with all hands by an
invasive foreign program over Iconia." Keira moved some more images
magnifying others. "The D'deridex Romulan Warbird from the same period,
split consistent with being thrown, but a hole has been punched through
where the antimatter containment pods would be if it was an actual ship.
The D-7 in the images you initially showed was snapped off at the boom. All
three were damaged at tactical weak spots before being dropped or thrown."

He tilted his head in fascination as he examined the images on his end.

=/\= Their tactical weak spots? Are you suggesting that while the rest of
the furniture and decor was broken , these were done so with care ?=/\=

"It could be a mere coincidence, but the damage I saw would indicate they
did the damage to the ships that would quickly end the fight with a ship of
similar class, then tossed them aside or threw them to discard."

Before Landers could speak an alert came through on his end of the
transmission.

=/\= That's interesting. It seems the rabbit hole has gotten deeper. =/\=

“Oh?” Keira’s curiosity had been further piqued.

=/\= I've just been notified that the home's defense systems weren't
bypassed, they were deactivated using recognized security codes. So it
seems that Mr. and Mrs. Hughes were in the home before the suspect entered
the residence. Using their codes to get in. So perhaps this wasn't a
targeted attack and it was a random selection. =/\=

“Using the Hughes’ codes?” Keira looked down, then back at the Commander,
“So either the person knew the Hughes’ codes, or copied them after they saw
those codes being imputed?”

=/\= Im saying that once the victims entered the home and deactivated the
defense systems someone entered after them all together. =/\=

“You might be right. Still, damned peculiar,” she said.

=/\= To be honest the entire thing is peculiar. This isn't something that
happens on earth too often. Not to mention in Ketchikan Alaska. The last
murder here was nearly eighty years ago.=/\= Landers remarked.

“You have my permission to take any evidence you need. Scan everything
though, something might have been missed in the initial run through.” Keira
warned. “Just give me an inventory of anything you take, let me know when
you’re finished so I can arrange a clean up crew. I don’t want to have
Rayna see the house like that.”

=/\= Everything is being documented and handled with the utmost care,
Admiral Sullivan isn't fond of sloppy work by her subordinates. Lander
