" I'm not good at relationships with people, and I'm certainly no expert
or an authority to speak on the dynamics of a father and child
relationship, but I know that you and him never talked. You told me last
night about your Aunt, he made the decision to shield you from that. It
couldn't have been easy. Maybe he felt like you wouldn't understand. I
guess I'm trying to say he made a bad call, but he did it out of love. "
Said Ethan.
“That’s about what he said, recognised his failings, I think that even as
he was doing it he knew it was stupid, but as you say, it was out of love.
That was a side of him I didn’t see. Wasn’t much more than a kid then.”
" He carries around a holo-image of the last time you were all together as
a family. " Ethan said , his voice trailing off.
" My Dad doesn't, and I know that because we were never a family, we never
got together and took a photo like that. Your smile, your father's smile.
That image is everything I never had. " Ethan said.
Slipping her hand underneath his, she felt the squeeze of his larger, much
stronger hands, enjoying the gentle crush of her more delicate hands in
his. “I’m sorry, I’m being selfish and taking things for granted again. I
have no right to moan about parenting when you…” She didn’t finish the
sentence, not wanting to upset him, not that it was a touchy subject
between them, Trinity simply didn’t like raking up the past, preferring to
live for the moment and think about the future between them.
" At least the two of you have let each other know how you feel…" Ethan
paused and jumped a bit.
" I got it. "
“You do?” Trinity wandered where his mind was going, Ethan did have some
out there ideas sometimes. ~Part of his charm~ she found herself thinking.
" You two should go-to dinner." Ethan declared.
“That’s…actually a good idea.” She admitted.
" Think about it, you both have your reasons to feel a certain way about
the past. Now you guys have the present. You're his daughter and I know
he'd love to hear all about the woman you are. Plus you love food and he
looks like hasn't eaten a proper meal in weeks, so it's a win-win
scenario." Ethan said with a slight laugh and kissed the tip of her head.
“I like food?” she sighed. “I’m certain that there’s a compliment in there
somewhere, but I know what you mean and it’s a lovely idea. Second he’s out
of sickbay, I'll take him to the Starlight lounge for dinner.” She smiled,
and snuggled down, leaning into his chest. “So you on shift at all today?”

Trinity shook her head, pushing the lustrous auburn hair out of her eyes,
“I have to bunch of paperwork to run through, but I’m not on the helm
today.” As her head lay on his chest, the thrumm of his heart was
soporific. She could feel herself sinking into him and her eyes growing
heavy. The gentle weight of his arm around her was comforting, safe.
