Mission: Space was cool before it mattered
Day: 1
Stardate: 2446.04.25
(USS Exeter - Main Science Lab - SFSE MedObs Cmd Ailynn Bracken and Ens(sg)
Gabriella De Luca - 1527)
Bella watched in almost horrified awe as Ailynn yelled at the CSO. However,
it seemed like water off a duck’s back as Lieutenant Cortez simply raised
an eyebrow. There was more going on in that dynamic than she obviously knew
about so kept her objections about Bracken’s tone to herself.
"What if….?" Erin paused as she began speaking, as if framing her thoughts.
"I'm no medical expert but, if this radiation waxes and wanes, couldn't
that be used somehow?"
Shifting the results to fit her physicists mind De Luca answered, aware
though she was pretty much talking over the potential reply of one the the
Federations’ greatest minds. “We found inconclusive results that on some
test runs certain molecular proteins behaved very differently, but we
struggled to repeat them at higher doses.”
"I mean… if there are high and low points, what if you could give small
dose of the radiation to build up some form of a defence or even it could
allow you to withstand higher doses for a longer period of time maybe?"
Erin blushed as soon as she spoke. "Sorry, like I say I am not a medical
expert…"
Ailynn reached out and grabbed De Luca’s arm.
“Owww…” she replied, annoyed, but looked at the Commanders face, it was
wide eyed, her eyes darting as if internally looking at dozens of screens.
“Commmmmander…?” She asked tentatively.
“Can’t be that simple….” Bracken managed. “Missed it. Too simple. De
Luca…Lex parsimoniae the law of parsimony, more commonly called Occam’s
Razor. The simplest solution with fewest assumptions is often the correct
one.”
(reply Cortez)
“If only there was a bloody scientist in the room. What happens to your
body if you’re subjected to a really really infinitesimally small amount of
something that a large amount of could kill you?”
Bella suddenly saw Bracken’s train of thought, and was utterly awed by her
realisation, on both a scientific and personal one. It must be terrifying
living in her brain. “Low doses act like a vaccination….prepare the system
and alter it to cope with a large dose. Whereas a sudden large dose will
kill.”
“AND THE PRIZE GOES TO MR JENNER….Erin…” Ailynn took a breath, briefly
wincing in pain. “You were right.”
(Reply Cortez)
Bella watched as the Commander, in obvious discomfort, continued about her
business, she could suddenly see how the woman that she had taken for as an
irresponsible, disrespectful wannabe, how she had gained the reputation
that she had.
Ailynn continued. “De Luca, Parker, repeat the tests, but do a double
blind where one set is exposed to low dose then high, one set high, and
cross reference it against a normal against background. Go. Cortez…please
remain, I need to thank you and ask a favour.”
