(USS Exeter -Unknown Planet - aACMO Ensign SG Heinrich Kruze - 0518)
The crew silently traversed the alien terrain. Heinrich let himself marvel at the reddish rocks interspersed with shoots of green shrubs. He marveled at the sky, how it never seemed to end. It wasn’t very often Heinrich was on a planet, and he did his best to take it in before it was time to get to work.
Lieutenant Commander Ravok signalled the away team to stop. They were on top of their position. He crouched near the cliff, peering over to the wreckage below. "The wreckage is on a ledge about 12 meters down. I didn't notice any movement." He paused, taking a deep breath. "We are going to have to repel down the rock face to the wreckage. There is no easy or safe way to do this. " Ravok said to them quietly.
The news that they would have to repel didn’t please Heinrich. He had a bum knee from school sports. But it sure beat climbing down.
“Sounds good to me.” He said, with some bitterness.
Ravok opened his backpack and produced his gear. "I'll go down first, set the line, and the rest of you can follow once I give the signal. If something happens to me I order all of you to run back to the Muskogee as quickly as possible and leave. " Ravok said as he fastened his harness around him.
“Aye sir.” Heinrich said.
"Doctor Kruze you follow behind me, take your time, plant your feet, grasping hand behind your back and hop gently down. Watch me closely. " Ravok said.
~At least I’ll be second to go.~ He thought to himself, not cherishing this moment. He would have vastly preferred to be within the controlled confines of a medical facility.
"Watch me,” Ravok said.
“I’m watching.” Heinrich said as Ravok began the descent. He repelled like a pro, using all the technique Heinrich had forgotten. Ravok made the 12 meters in no time. He unhooked himself, pulled out his phaser, and spied the wreckage. Seeing nothing amiss he looked up and waved for Heinrich to follow. Heinrich gulped, and gingerly grabbed hold of the rope. He made his way down in swift movements, almost losing his control. But he made it.
“Thank you Lieutenant Commander.” He said as he took his tricorder out.
It was Ronnie’s turn next. The hook to her gear snapped and she fell with a thud, rolled up like a ball. She rolled into a purple puddle with the force of the fall. Watching a comrade fall was enough to shock Heinrich out of whatever anxiety he felt and he ran straight to Winters.
“Lieutenant, can you get up?”
(Reply Winters)
He scanned her with the tricorder, checking to see what might be amiss.
“What happened there?”
(Reply Winters)
“Say Lieutenant Commander!” He yelled to Ravok, “This will take us a moment.”
(Reply Ravok)
