(Toronto – en route to Pinewood Studios - FO Ailynn Bracken/Gabrielle
Knight - 1008)
Ailynn was enjoying herself immensely. The roar of the car engine as she
drove the short way to the studio, guided by her phone made her feel more
alive than she had in a long while. She knew that if she were to bury the
gas she would be going dangerously quickly in a matter of a couple of
seconds.
All too quickly Google maps told her she was at her destination and
regrettably, AIlynn saw that it was correct. She swung the car into the
entrance, and was stopped by the guard.
“Morning Miss Knight. Lovely wheels.”
“Good Morning...Max” Ailynn read the guards nametag. He guard smiled, and
ticked off a name on a clipboard. “Your new pass is here ma’am. As you know
you need to wear it at all times when you’re on the lot.” She passed a
lanyard over, colour coded green for actors, with ‘Pinewood Toronto’
printed into the material. She thanked him and put it around her neck. “You
can park up over there, there’s a reserved space.” Thanking him again, she
pulled forward when the gate had been lifted.
She pulled forward, and after giving the car a final dip of the
accelerator, switched off and got out. She heard a voice from the public
side of the fence and turned.
“THAT’S GABRIELLE KNIGHT!! HEY YO GABBIE!”
Smiling gently, she waved a simple hi back, then turned to look at
'Pinewood.'
~This place is insane~ she thought. Looking towards a large hanger with
EXETER in a recognisable font above the large doors. She /turned to be
greeted by a young woman, about a foot shorter than she was. Her lanyard
was purple. “Morning Miss Knight. I got Ryan’s message about the uniform.
It’s in hand.” She walked at quite a pace for a shorter girl, and Ailynn
found herself lengthening her stride to keep up.
“Any messages for me? Any of the others here?”
“No messages, if you mean any of the other Exeter Crew then I haven’t seen
them. Here Miss Knight. Wardrobe.”
“Gabbie please...and forgive me, I’m having a daft day...your name?”
“Sara...Sara Dwight. Your PA for the upcoming season. Make a wish is due to
pick you up in 30, so I need you in costume, and then makeup will sort out
your hair. Everything’s hanging up in the cubicle, Pass your clothes out
and I’ll put them in a locker for you. You can carry your handbag, and
phone, but pass it off to Casey from Make-a-Wish when you get to the
hospital. She may just take it, don’t take offense. It’s just that the kids
are used to seeing you as Ailynn not as a real person. It’s confusing for
them if you look like you.”
“I know how they feel.” Ailynn smiled gently. “Thank you Sara. Keep me
posted. You can contact me yeah?”
“I have your number. Don’t worry. I know how to keep it secret.” Sara
smiled as she turned away and unlocked her phone, and tapped away seemingly
sending a message to someone.
Minutes later Ailynn stepped out of wardrobe, and while an assistant pinned
on her rank pips and insignia, which Ailynn found very strange, she was
guided toward the makeup chair.
A make up artist pulled up her sleeve, and applied a thin layer of glue,
and then placed a thin sheet on her left forearm, smiling gently as she
concentrated, another young lady combing her hair through, and applying
some spray or other, and then tying and braiding Ailynn’s hair into a
formal style that she recognised, but didn’t wear very often. Her hair was
being set into place with a liberal spray of another product, as make up
picked up a hair dryer to quickly dry off the glue for the transfer.
“That looks amazing.” she said referring to both the hair and the tattoo.
“Gotta have you looking your best for the hospital yeah? You’re good to go
Miss Knight.”
“Gabbie, please.” It was at that moment that her phone started to buzz.
Ailynn looked at it puzzled for a moment.
“Slide the green phone” the Hairdresser said. “I had that same model, it’s
touchy.”
Ailynn did so and the call connected, the voice was quiet, so she held it
to her ear to hear better.
“Miss Knight. It’s Sara. Casey’s here with your ride to the hospital. Meet
her at the front gate.”
The call was disconnected and Ailynn retraced her steps to the front.
Another young woman, this one blond, and dressed in what Ailynn supposed
was considered casual-smart. “Miss Knight.Thank you for this. Oh my you
really are that tall. I mean I didn’t doubt it, but oh my. I’m sorry, no
offence was meant. I’ve been doing this for five years and it still makes
me so nervous and excited.”
Ailynn smiled at Casey’s ineffable charm. “It’s fine. No problem.”
“Have you been in a children’s ward. Apart from that operation you did in
the Pilot episodes I mean.” She laughed gently.
“I’m not a real Doctor.” Ailynn laughed. “But no, I haven’t I know it’s
going to shock me, but…”
“But you’re worried it’ll hit you?”
AIlynn was silent, but nodded. “Act like you’re being brave?”
Casey nodded. “Shall we?”
Nodding, Ailynn followed Casey and sat in the back of the car, turning her
legs so they’d fit properly in the small footwell.
