Standing off to one side backstage, Erin felt nervous. The fact that she
had held many department meetings and spoken infront of the command staff
made no difference. For some reason, speaking to a collection of people who
thought she was this Genevieve Rhodes had her nervous. Taking a deep
breath, she closed her eyes for a second and listened to the sounds coming
from the fairly sizable crowd that appeared to have gathered. Talking,
laughing, the people seemed excited.

~What the heck am i expected to say to them?~ she thought to herself as she
opened her eyes to see three men walking towards her, obviously heading to
the stage area. One of them was older, with greying hair carrying what
looked like drumsticks, then there was a shorter guy wearing glasses
carrying a large guitar and another younger man with black floppy hair
carrying another guitar.

The younger one smiled at her, “Gen, glad you could make it.”

Erin, smiling as it was the only thing she could do at that moment,
replied, “Oh… Yeah. Sorry.”

He looked at her, tilted his head and smiled, “Forgotten us already haven’t
you?”

Erin, shrugging her shoulders, simply said, “Again, sorry. Still jet lagged
i suppose.”

The younger guy laughed, “I suppose that’s what having a guy who comes from
Australia does to you. I’m Billy. Billy Moran. Lead guitar and sometimes
pianist. The grey haired dude is Stephen Norton. Drummer extraordinaire and
the short guy with the oversized bass guitar is Michael Borja. We’re the
house band.”

“Oh okay. Cool. Good to know.”

“So, if you need us.. For you know, a little impromptu concert, just give
me the nod.” Billy said, winking.

“Wait… why would i….” Erin began to say and was interrupted by a loud cheer
from the crowd.

The man that Billy had identified as Norton walked onto the stage followed
by the shorter guy. Billy looked at her and smiled, “See you onstage,
sweetheart.”

Erin watched as they walked off through the curtain and she sighed. ~What
on earth is going on here?~

Sitting on the chair, Erin had felt her nerves calm over the last twenty
minutes. The people in the crown that had asked her questions had listened
to everything she had to say, had seemed to love and understand the points
she had made about herself, or Erin as a character and had made her feel
something that she hadn’t felt in a long time. Accepted.

As the queue for questions had thinned, Erin found herself wanting to stay
there. Talking to the people had made her feel like she belonged. So, she
turned to the last person waiting and said,

“Okay, seems like you are the last one. What’s your question?” The young
girl who couldn’t have been more that 15 or 16 looked nervous as she spoke.
“My name’s Jamie. Jamie Pohs. Er…. i suppose my question is is it true that
you are releasing a single soon and, if so, can we get a sneak peak?”

Erin paused. Looking at the girl, she smiled as she fought against the
nerves growing in her chest again. Only one person had ever heard her sing
and he was currently in a room with people who were saying they were his
parents. Now, this kid was asking her to sing infront of over a hundred
people. Looking at the crowd, they all seemed to smile and began to cheer.

Taking a breath, something sparked in her mind. A vision or a memory from
whoever this person they all thought she was. So, she stood, nodded and
said, “Well, Jamie. I suppose the rumours are true.”

The crown erupted with cheers, Erin smiled widely and looked at Billy who
nodded at her and sat at the instrument that Erin remembered from her
history classes at the Academy. “If Mr. Billy Moran is at the keyboard then
i suppose i have to don’t i?”

The crowd cheered again and Erin laughed. Something about this felt right
to her. A sudden surge of confidence flew through her like a lightning bolt
and she walked over to Billy’s side and said, “Shall we?”

He nodded and began to play an almost haunting melody. Erin took a breath
and opened her mouth. A voice and a song she had not heard in a very long
time came belting out like a wave crashing onto the seashore. As she
continued, something else happened. All the pain and anxiety and self
deprecation that had been such a constant companion in her life up until
that point melted away as she sang.
