Mission: A new day dawns

Day: 2

Stardate: 2446.01.29

(Earth- Home of Trip and Ashlyn Williams --Entertainment Room – SOPS/3O
Lieutenant Commander Tyrek Na'Re & CFO Lieutenant Ire Williams -2207)

Tyrek chalked up his pool cue and then tossed chalk to Ire.

" Here you go Lieutenant. I'll rack the balls in a standard 8 ball
configuration and you can break the formation."

He caught the chalk.

“Thank you.”

He finished chalking his pool cue and looked at the table. He paused before
getting himself into position and then took the shot.

Tyrek removed his sash and draped it over a chair as Lieutenant Williams
broke the formation , scattering the 15 balls around the table. The solid
colored balls bearing the number 2 and 4 went into adjacent pockets.

" Good shot, Lieutenant. "

Ire looked at the table and where the balls had scattered to.

“Thanks but I am sure that it's beginner's luck.”

" Perhaps Lieutenant Williams, but nonetheless you have a two ball
advantage. You have the low numbered balls and I have the high numbered
balls as my targets. Don't worry I won't make you call your shots. " Tyrek
took a sip of his wine and placed it back down on the table

" Your turn again Lieutenant. " Tyrek informed him.

He looked at the new layout of the balls before he took the next shot.

“So how are you finding things here on earth?”

Tyrek thought as he looked at the table.

" It's very crowded. Terrans have all this land and still feel the urge to
gather on top of each other. I often wonder, do any of you like personal
space?" He laughed.

“Yes we do but there are situations for when personal space is respected
and when it is not.”

He gave a smile.

“Any other things that you have found different?”

" The food is better than I thought it would be and there are so many
options. I truly think this planet doesn't get enough credit for its
diverse menu options." Tyrek remarked as he lined up to take his shot and
hammered the 12 ball into a corner pocket of the table.

“That is ture we do seem to have a lot of different food options, each one
more different than the next. I mean some of the curries from the asian
parts of earth are amazing, although they can be a bit hot, but I am sure
that Romulans have a wide and varied menu.”

Tyrek missed his next shot and looked at Ire.

" Umm we have options , but we have strict traditions on how and when
certain meals can be eaten. We have entire weeks of our calendar dedicated
to eating roasted birds for breakfast lunch and dinner. There is culinary
freedom here. You mentioned Asian food. I have developed a rather unhealthy
addiction to Chinese carryout. " He laughed as he watched Ire shoot his
shot.

“I do like Chinese but I think Curry is far better in my opinion.”

" Your half bajoran , I heard you mention the Prophets. Where is your
earring ? " Tyrek asked , getting a good vibe from the friendly
Lieutenant.

He ran his finger over his right ear.

“I don’t feel that I have the right to wear it yet but that is a
conversation for a different time.”1

Ire paused as he took a shot.

“Yes, I am Bajoran on my mothers side. Although I was taught about the
Prophets when I was younger and even though I don’t go to the temples as
much as I did as a child. Its Sometimes good to ask them just in case they
are keeping an eye on things. ”

" Well if it brings any comfort your religion seems to be the only one that
has provided any tangible evidence of the existence of deities. They live
in a wormhole , the rest of us have superstitions and mythological
creatures." Tyrek exclaimed with a smile.

“Belief is a powerful thing no matter what you believe in.”

" So what about aspirations, Lieutenant ? Have any plans to climb the
ranks?" Tyrek asked , getting to know Ire.

Ire gave a slight laugh.

“Me climb. I was happy being a fighter pilot. Captain Williams saw promise
in me and has promoted me to Lieutenant as well putting me in charge of a
department which has definitely been a challenge. But I am the most
happiest flying which is why I am lucky to be the CFO.”

“How about you? Lieutenant Commander fancy making captain one day and
having your own warbird?”

Tyrek held his pool cue with one hand and pointed it at Ire.

" No." He grinned.

" Let me explain. If everyone had the desire to be a Commanding Officer and
achieved just that , then who would do the other jobs? I was good at the
job I was doing. My role on the ship was important. "

Ire nodded in response.

“I can understand that. Not everyone can be Captains or Admirals.”

Tyrek shot and made his shot into the side pocket.

" My mother once told a story about a tree in a dense forest. One of the
roots of the tree could see the sunlight peeking through the canopy of the
trees, this root wanted nothing more than to be a leaf at the very top of
the tree. So the root wished to no longer be a root and become a leaf and
see the sunlight in all its splendor. One day to the surprise of the root
it was transformed into a leaf at the top of the tree…." Tyrek paused and
held up his hand.

" Please forgive me, the story is extremely silly."

“Parents' stories can be. I know some of mine have been.””

" Well anyway ...the root, who was now a leaf, began to feel ill and when
they asked the other leaves why they felt this way, the other leaves
responded by telling them. That they were a strong root who provided
nutrients to the rest of the tree from the forest floor, but since they
became a leaf the vital nutrients were stripped from the rest of the tree
and the tree was now dying….the moral of the story is very simple. Everyone
has a place and the sooner we all realize that the better off we all will
be." Tyrek finished and fired another ball into a corner pocket.

“I agree and disagree with that.”

Ire said with a smile.

“I think that people should have the opportunity to raise higher then they
are. They should also know the level of their knowledge and understanding
if they want to progress, they need to be able to do that safely and
sensibly.”

" Well the story isn't about destroying aspirations, it's more about seeing
the value in your duties or role in society. " Tyrek explained, as he
missed his next shot.

" You're turn Lieutenant Williams "

Ire lined up and played the shot. It hit the cushion and missed its target
by a hair's breath. He stepped back and offered the table to Tyrek.

“Okay that makes more sense when you explain it that way.”
