Mission: A new day dawns
Day: 3
Stardate: 2446.01.30
(USS Exeter - Bean Me up - Lieutenant Greta Smith & CFO Lieutenant Ire
Williams - 1302)
Walking into the coffee place, Greta looked around and was secretly
thankful the place was quiet. Still in the light blue dress, she placed her
order and took a seat and waited.
The session with Dural had been interesting and tiring. Knowing that she
ahead to meet the new Chief Security officer at some point, she had chosen
to get a coffee and try to relax for the rest of the day.
Ire entered with the PADD in one hand. He had been trying to get the roster
sorted as they had a few changes of personnel in his department. He needed
some tea and maybe something to eat before he gave it another look. He
sometimes felt that being a squadron leader was easier than being a
department head. He gave a slight smile as he headed towards the replicator.
Looking up, Greta saw Ire enter and returned the smile. Truth be told, she
had been thinking about him and had been worried for him. She knew he still
carried what had happened between them but, since their talk on Earth, she
had hoped that talking with her would become easier.
As the waitress brought her drink, she thanked her and looked back over at
Ire. ~Still carrying the weight of the world.~
Ire picked up his hot cup of tea and a small tray of lemon fancy on it. He
turned to search the room for somewhere to sit when he spotted Greta. A
smile danced across his face before he walked across the room.
“Do you mind if I take a seat?”
"Of course. Sit." She replied. Sitting up a straighter, she looked at him,
"I'm cleared for duty."
Ire placed his PADD, cup and plate onto the table before he sat down. He
looked at her and nodded.
“I am glad…I guess that there are many things to get sorted before we can
leave.”
Greta raised an eyebrow, "There are? I suppose you are right. A lot of
this, me being here is down to Doctor Dural. He's been helping me."
“He has, that’s good. How are you doing?”
"Physically, I'm fine. During the day, it's easier. Still have some
problems sleeping…" Greta’s voice tailed off a little.
“I am sorry.”
"How are you doing, Ire?"
He gave a tired smile.
“It will be a while until I get a full night's sleep also.”
He indicated to his PADD.
“I am focusing on my work for the moment. It keeps me busy and out of
mischief.”
"That's something I have missed. I think if I talk about what happened
anymore I will burst." She replied.
“I can understand that.”
"Honestly, talking has helped but there's only so many times you can go
over the same things. I know that, at least for Starfleet, I seem to be
something of an enigma."
“They like to have things in their own specific place.”
"Apparently, not many people have been able to go through what I did and
come out of it with such speed."
“You are strong Greta. If anyone can get through this you can.”
Blushing slightly, Greta looked down at her drink, "That's… thank you. It's
just the dreams more than anything but that will take time."
“Yes it will. Unfortunately recovery is never as quick and easily as we
want it to be.”
Greta sighed heavily, "Physically, it was easy. Commander Bracken fixed
the physical and Doctor Kruze did a good job aiding the recovery. Just wish
sometimes the other stuff would just fade.
I know it takes time. I do. It's frustrating."
“Yes it is.”
He reached out to touch her hand.
“It will be okay. I promise.”
Looking at him, Greta reached out her hand to his and stopped. "Ire, I
know.. one thing this whole situation has taught me is to be honest. I have
no qualms or problems with you, with us. But, I don't want to go back to
how we were. We need to start again. From the beginning. Build it back."
He closed his eyes and took a breath before he nodded.
“There is no way we can just go back to what we had, especially not after
what happened. But building it back is something we can do.” He looked at
her. “It will take time but I will be here. I will not lose you again.”
She smiled softly, "I think, from now on, we have to be honest with each
other. I know now that a lot of what caused is to break wasn't either of
us. It was her. But we can't build something without being honest.
I still love you, always have and always will. That is not the problem. I
broke… got broken. I need to learn to trust myself again. Trust that I'm
not going to see those things, to not fall apart in a battle and just get
my confidence back. I'm not the fiery Scottish warrior I was."
Ire nodded. “I am sure that you will be again. I do love you and that will
never change but like you I also have to learn to trust myself. To make
sure that I can be the person I need to be so that I can then be the person
I want to be.”
Greta smiled gently, "I'm always going to be here. We've fought too long
and hard. I just… " she touched his hand gently as she spoke, "... want you
to know that I don't and never will hate you. Not for any part of it."
Ire gave a sad smile. “You may forgive me, by the prophets the rest of the
crew might forgive me. It will take a long time for me to forgive myself.”
" I know. I can say as many times as I can that I forgive you but it takes
you to understand and hear it. To know that it's not nor was it your fault.
Only you can do that. I'll be here whenever you need me."
He nodded. “And while I am sorting myself out. I will be here whenever you
need me. Helping you will also help me.”
"Then maybe we should agree to talk. Not everyday necessarily. Just talk.
No strings. Just us, helping each other. Get that bond back."
“Yes I would like that. That would be nice.”
Gripping his hand gently, Greta let go for a moment and looked at him, "I
think we can make it. I hope we can."
He gently squeezed her hand in return and nodded. “Yes we. I am sure of it.”
Greta smiled gently as she felt the warmth of his hand, "All I have to do
now is make sure my uniform still fits."
Ire smiled “I am sure that it does."
