Mission: A new day dawns
Day: 3
Stardate: 2446.01.30
(USS Exeter - Personal Quarters Lieutenant Greta Smith & ACMO, Ensign Dural
Methor DrPH - 1001)
Sitting alone in her quarters, Greta sighed deeply. Since being released
from Starfleet Medical the evening before, she had made her way back on
board the ship and not left her room.
The doctors had told her that she was ready to return to work but slowly.
Knowing she was back on board and in familiar surroundings had helped her a
little but the changes within her were weighing in her mind a lot.
Turning the toy that Dural had given her over in her hand, shocked down at
it and smiled.
Dural approached Lieutenant Smith's door and pressed the doorbell using the
Earth vernacular. When the treatment was started, honestly he didn't know
exactly what to expect, usually progress was slow with these exercises, as
they began at a very early age. The first day she made a large leap in
using the device.
~It may be time for her first centering exercise. We will see how she
feels.~
Putting down the toy, Greta stood. Wearing a simple blue dress, she had not
found herself able to out on her uniform just yet, she walked to the door
and opened it, smiling softly,
"Doctor, come in."
"Greta, I came by to check on you," Dural said pleasantly as he entered the
room, "how are you feeling?"
"I'm.. okay. Well, Starfleet thinks I am. They've cleared me to return to
duty and the ship so they must think I'm ready."
"I think a more accurate term would be: able to convalesce at home
station." Dural corrected her as gently as possible. "Though please don't
get discouraged, returning to the Exeter is a very large and promising
first step."
"Feels like a big one. Just being here is.. difficult."
"Would you mind if I scanned you?" Dural asked.
"No." She replied, sitting down at the table nearby the door. "What are
you looking for?"
"Sodium and potassium ion levels, neuron membrane resting potentials, " he
listed off smiling, "you know, boring stuff." He flipped open the tricorder
and began his scans.
She nodded and closed her eyes although part of her knew that this wasn’t
needed. "How am I doing?"
"Electrolyte levels are good." Dural said removing the auxiliary sensor
probe from the front of his tricorder. He kept the blinking sensor
approximately five centimeters away, moving it along Greta's coronal and
sagittal suture lines. "Potentials look good."
“That’s good, Right?” Greta asked, a little concerned.
“Yes, it means physically, everything is as it should be. Which means you
should be ready.”
“Okay… what are we doing today, Doctor?”
“We will work on your concentration.” Dural indicated the device he had
gifted to her, “May I?”
Greta nodded and handed the toy to him, “Concentration?”
He lifted the child’s toy, that looked much smaller in his larger hands. He
entered a few commands and set it down on the table so the projector
displayed in between the two of them. “Ready?”
“I think so.” she replied honestly.
The device displayed a series of images, five in total each staying for
only one half of a second. Once it finished. Dural asked, “Can you remember
the images, in order?”
Closing her eyes for a moment as she tried to recall the images, “A ball,
Targ, book, starship….” she paused, her brow furrowed as she tried to
recall the last image, “.... damn it….” she replied, opening her eyes, “...
the last one… I can't see it.”
“Concentrate.” Dural tried to encourage her.
Taking a breath, she knew she was frustrated and it showed. Looking at the
doctor, Greta sighed, “I can’t see the last one.”
Dural’s brow furrowed, it could be the case that she’s never seen the
Cardassian blossom that had not bloomed yet. He needed to ensure she wasn’t
having short memory lapses.
“Perhaps because you have never seen it before? It is an unbloomed
Cardassian lily, let's try some images that are more universal.”
Greta nodded. "It could be.. I'm a little concerned about that but let's
try."
Dural reached down and pressed a short sequence of buttons changing the
parameters, to show two dimensional geometric shapes. “Ready?” He asked
with an encouraging smile.
"Yes." She replied, her gaze back on the toy in front of her.
“Concentrate.” He encouraged. “Begin.” Five wire-framed geometric images
appeared in sequence.
Greta watched, intensely focusing on the shapes. After they flashed up
before her, she closed her eyes, "Square, Circle, Rectangle, triangle and
diamond?"
“Correct.” Dural said, clearing the queue.
"I feel like a kid again. "
“How so?”
"Basic shape recognition. It's what kids learn."
“The shapes don't matter." Dural smiled, “What color was the square?”
Thinking for a second, Greta took a breath and said, “Blue?”
Dural only nodded.
"Am I a lost cause, Doctor?"
“Absolutely not, you’re doing well. The point is working on your recall of
memory, reinforcing the pathways created so that your recollection is
sharper, faster. This in turn allows you to resist outside influences.”
Dural ensured her.
Taking a deep breath Greta nodded. The whole situation that she had found
herself in was frustrating but she knew that Dural was helping her and so,
kept her usual snappy response down.
“Let’s go again.” the Cardassian said, he stepped up and entered a new
sequence. He set it on a timer and stepped behind Greta’s field of view.
Nodding, Greta turned her gaze back to the images that were about to come
up. Determined to remember each of them, she focused on the toy, only
watching the shapes.
Once the timer ran out the images proceeded as before five images each
taking half a second before moving to the next. On the second shape Dural
took a small red ball out of a pocket and threw it across Greta’s field of
view, arcing over the shapes and falling behind them.
Greta saw the ball arc over the second shape and her field of view.
Blinking for a moment, she kept her gaze on the shapes and kept saying the
sequence over and over in her mind.
Dural simply waited for her response.
"I saw the ball but… I was so focused on the shapes. Was that wrong?"
"The ball was meant to be a distraction, if you can still remember the
sequence and yet also acknowledge the ball you've grasped what these first
lessons are supposed to be about. What was the sequence?"
"Square, rectangle, circle, diamond, triangle."
"And the color of the fourth image?" Dural asked.
"Pink."
The Cardassian smiled and nodded, "Excellent, I think it's time I show you
the practical applications of what I'm teaching you."
Greta nodded and took a breath. Something about focusing on these simple
shapes was soothing to her. Her sleep had gotten better but there was still
some work to be done.
"I'm ready whenever you are, Doctor. "
"When do you generally take your evening meal?" Dural asked.
“Around 6. Depends if i am on shift but, if not, around 6.”
"Good, that is their busiest time. Meet at Bean Me Up then?"
“Sure…” Greta paused and looked at him, quizzically. “Why?”
"I promise it will be relevant, see you then."
“Until then, Doctor.”
