(Earth- Home of Trip and Ashlyn Williams- Lt. Ire Williams and Lt. JG Heinrich Kruze - 1943)

Ire excused himself to the person next to him and got up from the table and headed towards the table at one end which contained Trips drink cabinet. He paused there looking at the choices that were on offer when he heard someone come up beside him. He turned to see Kruze beside him, he nodded and smiled at him.

“Hallo you looking for a drink as well?”

Heinrich peered into the cabinet. “After today, I need it.” He opened the door and took out a bourbon.

“I know what you mean. Nothing like having a good drink after a hard day.”

Heinrich chuckled, pouring the bourbon neat into a glass. “Tell me about it. I’m on shore leave and I’m stuck treating multiple people for combat injuries at a baseball game.”

“I knew that the Academy games had a reputation of getting heated but that was totally out of control.”

“Makes you wonder what this galaxy is coming to.” He said jokingly. Every slightly older generation relishes the opportunity to lament the slightly younger one.

“This is supposed to be where we take rest and relaxation against the rest of the crazy galaxy and not have crazy things happen here.”

“Ah, but don’t forget the old terran proverb. No rest for the wicked.” He took a drink.

Ire nodded.

“That is so true. We just need to make sure that we are not the wicked ones.”

“Not always as simple as it would appear…” Heinrich said. “But say, do you have any plans this shore leave?”

He paused for a moment as he found the drink he was looking for and poured himself a glass.

“There is not much really down here for me. Maybe some family places I could visit. I have not been to them since I graduated from the academy but most of them are up there.” He pointed to the ceiling. “I need to make sure that Greta is on the road to recovery….I might do a bit more sailing while I am here though.”

He took a sip.

“How about you?”

“I’m not from these parts either, and I have no real desire to go back home. I’m thinking of getting some things done I might not get around to on mission. Some study, some experimental work. It’ll be a nice change of pace, I think.”

“Yes a slower pace is good while we have the chance before we all get back on the Exeter and warp off into the galaxy.”

“Very true. Where are you from, then?”

Ire smiled.

“I am a zero-g baby. I was born on the USS Roadrunner. My mother was the Captain and my father was the Chief medical officer. Although I had visited ground side a few times. I was not until I got to the academy I spent actual time on the planet.”

“How about you. Where are you from?”

“Oh, I’m from Colony Alpha 5. I had a practice there until I felt some of the wanderlust. Though, it sounds to me like you were born for this.”

Ire smiled.

“I was born to fly and I felt I owed my parents who were both starfleet officers.”

“Must feel strange being grounded, then.”

“A little, but there are still some many interesting things down here then there are up there. But I do miss being out in the black.”

“How come you chose star fleet rather than other organizations in the federation to help with your wanderlust?”

Heinrich paused, not so sure what his answer was. “I suppose… the romance of getting there first. Being at the cutting edge. On the very fringe. Getting as far away and as far forward as I could.”

Ire nodded.

“I can understand that. The federation is made up of explorers first no matter what actually happens when we get to our destination.”

“And let me tell you, being a doctor on a colony can be boring. You’re always treating the same handful of illnesses or injuries. But when you’re out with starfleet, who knows what you might run into? It’s a lot more exciting in that way if also more difficult and potentially heartbreaking.”

“Yes I know what you mean. I love to fly. It’s one of the best things in the galaxy and as much as I enjoy piloting the Exeter which is fun. I really enjoyed piloting fighters. The freedom is incredible and then because I was good at it I was promoted to squadron leader. Which came with its own responsibilities and challenges. It was amazing when we flew as a squadron or even as the whole fighter wing it was awe inspiring as we felt that we were invincible…..but space and space combat is dangerous and we lost close friends….it unfortunately happens with the careers that we have chosen.”

“We must be crazy.”

“That is true. I guess that’s why we have counselors on board.”

Heinrich laughed. “They must have their hands full.”

Ire grinned.

“Ow yes I am sure that they do. Would rather fly than try to work out what is going on inside our minds.”

“Good thing space is infinite.”

“Yes all we have to do is to go round those pesky planets now and again and we’re sorted for the long haul.”

“Let’s hope it never ends.”

“If we ever reach the end I guess we would just have to turn around and go back.”

“... let’s hope it never ends. Cheers.” Heinrich said, raising his glass.
