Mission: A new day dawns

(USS Exeter -Officer's Mess– SOPS/3O Lieutenant Commander Tyrek Na'Rel-2042)



"And you went and you put on the bloody uniform, that about right?"

" Yes. Interesting choice of words but yes." Tyrek responded, finishing the
contents of his mug.

"My parents were also educators, though at the university level. They used
to say to me, 'Alistair, a Brightwood has been teaching at the University
of Oxford since the 12th century. A Brightwood has been engaged in the
study and teaching of Philosophy at Exeter College since it was founded in
the 14th century. How dare you break that millenia long tradition.
Apparently Teaching at Exeter college and working on the USS Exeter aren't
the same thing."

Tyrek looked at him and smiled.

" Well some traditions come to an end. Perhaps you have started a new
chapter for your family. Brightwood's in service."

"Anyways enough about me, I always do that, I'm all sat here blabbering
about myself, when you were about to share a story. So tell me then friend,
how did you disappoint your mother?"

Tyrek laughed softly and tilted his head.

" Well Lieutenant. I joined a junior military academy at the age of 13
whilst I was still in school. It felt right. We Na'Rel's have a long
standing tradition with the military going back  to the days of our exodus
to Romulus. My mother hoped that I would turn away from tradition as my
father had done when he decided to venture into politics. " He paused and
stood up.

" But, she was wrong. Now if you excuse me Lieutenant Brightwood.  I must
be going."

" It was an unexpected pleasure talking to you Lieutenant. " Tyrek said,
putting emphasis on the word unexpected.

" Until next time Lieutenant " Tyrek nodded and walked away with his half
eaten shrimp Alfredo and empty mug.
