(Earth, Arizona, NPC Cadet Joshua Tucker, 1221)
Josh saw that Jori was pitching again. Looking forward to bashing another homerun off her, he sauntered to the plate, batting lead off.
"Let's go, Josh! Just like last year. Go deep on her!"
~I'll go deep on her,~ thought Josh.
"Play ball!" shouted the umpire.
Josh was in the batter's box, smiling with confidence. He could see Jori on the mound glaring at him, her eyes like phasers ready to fire.
~This is going to be great!~ thought Josh.
Jori threw the pitch. The baseball was coming.
Right at his head.
Dropping to the ground, the ball clobbered Josh on the left shoulder. The speed wasn't high, but it still hurt.
An awe rippled through the gathered crowd.
Jumping up quickly, Josh called Jori a bad name.
"Easy there, dude," said the catcher. "Just let it go."
Ignoring him, Josh felt his face growing hot when he saw Jori with a satisfied smile on her face.
"You think that's funny?"
"Yeah, I do, actually," said Jori, laughing.
"Well see how funny this is!" Josh charged the mound, heading straight at Jori. He was going to show her the right way to settle things on a baseball field.
Josh wasn't certain how the next few seconds turned out the way they did as he felt himself being flipped over Jori's hip. Blast those security types!
While Josh was on the ground catching his breath, the benches of both teams emptied as players stampeded onto the field. The crowd began cheering. Getting up, he looked for his nemesis, but when he saw her, Jori was in the middle of a mob of pushing, shoving, and flying fists.
Normally, baseball fights were tame, but today was something that had been building for months. No matter who the captains were, the teams were basically always the same. Game and academy rivalries had become ingrained onto the field. An explosion was inevitable. Jori hitting him with the first pitch of the game, just hurried it along.
Now that things had erupted, there was sure to be disciplinary action, maybe even a suspension of the monthly games. If that was to be, Josh was determined to settle the score. Seeing Jori, he pushed his way towards her.
