NRPG: Correcting an edit that Rob asked me to make, that Rayna is going to
her maternal aunt not her biological mother. Apparently he remembers his
posts from a year ago better than I remember his posts from a year ago. Go
figure.

Mission: A new day dawns
Day: 1
Stardate: 2446.01.28
(USS Exeter - Ready Room - CO, Captain Trip Williams - 1404)
"I know we didn't exactly agree where Rayna should go," Keira started. "I
said some choice words in the argument, that I shouldn't have. Because I
didn't mean them. I was lashing out in my anger and loss of Ravok and
Rayna, my family was gone in one swoop." She paused. "I'm sorry."
"I understand, but as I said before you had no legal right, I was obligated
to find the next person with parental rights or some sort of guardianship.
I understand you were close to her, but at the end of the day, this was
what was best. After Ravok, the next in line for her guardianship was her
Maternal aunt. But, as long as she was with my parents on Earth, you are
always welcome to pop by, and her aunt is adamant that you have some
contact with her. I know it's not what you wanted, but its the best I could
do, without subjecting Rayna to a long drawn out legal battle."
"That does help. Truly." Keira said, her demeanor lifting from the somber
mood it was when she sat down. "Thank you again for reaching out to her
maternal aunt and allowing me further contact through subspace. Auntie
Keira has a nice ring to it."
"You're thinking about him right now, I can tell. You're covered in
emotions of loss and regret, I'm not trying to pry. You are just
telegraphing. You miss him, don't you, something fierce."
"Yes, him. I miss him, or do I miss the idea of him?" She asked
rhetorically. "I think it's going to take me a while to suss that out. I
almost proposed, you know?"
"really? I figured you'd be more old fashioned and make him do it."
"Yeah. I made a ring, by hand, gold pressed latinum with two strips worth
of latinum in a little box in my hand the last time I saw him. In his
office." Keira said. The first time she had shared that bit of information.
"And you didn't ask him?"
"Trip, it wasn't him. He was too far gone. I should have said something."
Keira said in disappointment, mostly in herself. "I Should have seen it
sooner. I had those damn rose-colored glasses on. All the red flags I
should have seen looked like regular flags."
"He fooled us all. I thought there was more of him in there too."
"I could have ended it, in the jefferies tube..." she started. "I had the
blade in my hand. I chose the cord because I couldn't kill him, I was
hoping it would stun him. I had no idea about the nanites yet."
"If you would have killed him, you'd be regretting that everyday for the
rest of your life. You had no way of knowing how it would turn out."
"For what it's worth, Skipper, I'm glad he didn't kill you." Keira said
jovially.
"Well, I'm sure there are probably times where Ash wishes he had." Trip
said with a laugh.

"I know that there is a theory that by frying the nanites you caused there
to be some peramences in the inversion, screwing up his brain. But
sometimes, I look at our whole history together, and I wonder if that is
who he was all along. Paranoid, ruthless, calculating, destructive. As if
he decided to stop pretending to be something else, stopped pretending to
be what he thought he was supposed to be, rather than who he wanted to be."
