(USS Exeter – Sickbay – CSO Lt Jg Erin Cortez – 0002)

Walking into Sickbay, Erin was grateful that she had decided to come now.
Truthfully, she had hoped to avoid seeing Doctor Vespers and wanting to
spend a few minutes with Ailynn without anyone judging her or listening in.

She nodded to the on duty nurse as she walked past her and went to the
small side room where Ailynn was. Taking a moment before she stepped
inside, Erin closed her eyes for the briefest of seconds and then, opening
them, walked inside.

Taking a seat next to her closest friend, Erin went to take her hand and
stopped for a moment. Her breath was shaking a little and she took Ailynn’s
hand gently.

“A, i know you can hear me, you daft old bat. Best part of you being in a
coma is i may actually get a word into a conversation” A slight laugh
escaped her lips as she sighed.

“A, time to be honest with you. Everyone that has come here has probably
been telling you how they need you, so i’m not going to do that. What i am
gonna do is tell you the truth. Warts and all.

A, you saved me. In more ways that anyone ever has. Not just in the
physical sense, which you did but you know that. You saved me in the sense
that you were there for me when it got rough.

You were the one person i could talk to when i struggled. When i woke up
screaming in the night from the parade of nasty, violent memories walked
through my head…. I called you. When i woke up from the surgery, you were
there.

Remember that day at the prison, that day when i nearly turned back around
and refused to go in. You were the one that helped me to understand that
what i was fearing, wasn’t him but myself and how i would react.

You are, quite simply, my rock. I can’t do this without you. I need you, A.
You understand me. You get the dark in me and you don’t see it. Somehow you
see the light when i can’t.”

Taking a moment, Erin wiped a tear from her eye, sighed and looked back at
her friend,

“Someone once told me that a person is only as strong as those that walk
with them. You are strong when i’m not. Now, i have to be strong for you.

I’m going to leave you to sleep. But i want to say something to you before
i go.” Standing, Erin leant forward to Ailynn’s ear and whispered,

“When you are in doubt, be still, and wait; when doubt no longer exists for
you, then go forward with courage. So long as mists envelop you, be still;
be still until the sunlight pours through and dispels the mists -- as it
surely will. Then act with courage. I will be your courage, A.”

Laying a gentle kiss on her friend’s forehead, Erin turned and left her to
sleep.
