(USS Exeter - Sickbay - ACTO Paul Sleeford - 13:53)
Laying in the bed feeling sorry for himself as nurse stood by the bed, he
felt like his world had been wiped away and his life as a Starfleet officer
was over.
"Who should have?" She asked marking the reads in her head
"Doctor Vespers, he should have let me bleed out on the planet."
"Ah, well it's his job to save you, as is mine. You've had a rough time."
Silvine perched herself on the small chair next to the bed.
Giving a bitter laugh, Sleeford turned and looked at the nurse, seeing only
someone who had taken his career. "So what happens now. Medical discharge I
suppose, thrown out on the scrap heap."
"It's really not my place to say Ensign" she said but there was something
on his face that needed to know.
"We had to amputate what was left of your leg from the blast, Dr Vespers
did everything he could on the planet surface but by the time you got here
the priory was saving you. We did loose you for a moment, some shrapnel had
shifted but we kept you here. I'm really sorry Ensign, but there are so
many options for you, we can create a new le..."
Sleeford looked at her "Please i'd like to be alone, if you don't mind"
"Of course, I'll see you soon" she placed a reassuring hand on his shoulder
and left the room
As the nurse left Sleeford lay back and looked at the ceiling he started at
the join in the panels for a long time, laying awake Sleeford pushed himself
to a sitting position. Looking round for a nurse or orderly and finding
none that were not busy, he left them to work on more important people.
Reaching over for the PADD on his side table he half sat there and composed
a message to the counselling department.
~might as well get this over with~
"Ensign Lavorre H. Could you come to sickbay at your earliest convenience.
Thank you"
Sending the message he slumped back on the pillow. Somewhere down on the
planet were his friend putting their lives on the line while he lay here
because he was stupid and made a mistake, dodge right instead of left. The
only bright side he could see was no one else had been hurt by his
foolishness.
