(Gamma Quadrant Planet, Temple grounds – FO Lt(sg) Ailyn Bracken – 1037)
Ailynn took a deep breath, a feeling, a sense of comfort coming to her.
Her team...her friends were on the way to rescue her.
She hoped that all of the others having Bajoran DNA were safe back on the
Exeter now, especially Ashlyn. The girl from school, who at the time had
been a friend, but since reconnecting, had become a massive part of her
life.
Smiling gently, she cast her mind back to one of the first times that she
had met Ashlyn. Ash had started the school later than others, which
normally would have given her an easy pass into the cool clique. However
Ash was from the other side of second and main. It didn’t actually mean
much, not in modern terms, but there was still a certain attitude that
stuck.
(San Francisco, Earth - Riker High - Ailynn Bracken (aged 14) - 2030)
There was largely no such thing as money, but power and influence was still
currency, those that had it, and wielded it, still managed to raise
children that were prone to being spoilt.
Ailynn strode through the gate, at touching 6 foot, she was by a good few
inches taller than everyone else in her year, this caused her a lot of
unwanted attention and bullying; or would have, had it not been for who her
family was.
Her name preceded her...everywhere. It opened doors, and closed them, it
changed people’s behaviour, some eyed her with suspicion, others held her
up to the class as a beacon, each time she took a grading test, she now
made a point of only scoring 94 percent. No more, no less, it was a matter
of pride to put in six percent of wrong answers. Any fool could get answers
wrong, and Ailynn considered herself no fool. She’d figured that The wrong
answer with the correct methodology, would show that she knew her stuff,
but made an error discounting the answer.
However, her teachers had retaliated with three letters.
E.C.F.
‘Error Carried Forward’ A disgusting misuse of privilege in Ailynn’s mind,
her marks hit 100% again. And so, the cycle continued.
Aware of a noise that simply sounded wrong, Ailynn turned, a distraction
from her little bubble. She could see a small bunch of her year crowding
round the new girl, Ashlyn.
Sighing, Ailynn waded in. “Leave her alone Cerise.”
“OOOOH!” A chorus came about her.
“Stay away Bracken. TRASHLYN and I have business. I want to know what scum
like this is doing here. Frak away Ailynn you’re not number one freak
anymore.”
Ailynn caught sight of Ashlyn’s eyes, and saw something deep down, a
resilience, a strength, it was deep though, as if it had been beaten down
methodically over the years.
“I...said...leave...her.” Ailynn’s voice was ice-cold, her temper was
rising rapidly.
“You hear that Trashlyn. You have a protector...a...girlfriend even. Sure
you’re both scum, you suit each other to be together...until you die…”
Ailynn snapped, and her left arm shot out, forcing Cerise against a wall
her fingers around her throat. Ailynn lifted her right hand and ran it down
Cerise’s exposed cheek.
“You’re a psycho puke Bracken.”
“Oh my dear...and we were just making friends.” Ailynn pushed and twisted
her left hand, her height, and leverage in her longer arms working to her
advantage. She could feel the other girl swallow in fear.
“You leave this girl alone. I’m going to hold you responsible ‘C’. if you
don’t…”
Ailynn forced her throat round even more, staring furiously into her eyes.
“I’m going to hurt you really really badly.” She ran another finger down
Cerise’s cheek, Ailynn’s left ring finger, strategically placed, could feel
Cerise’s terror.
“SHE’S BLUFFING!” A voice from the back called out.
“She…” Cerise looked deeply into Ailynn’s eye’s. She saw a whole world of
things that she really wished she hadn’t. “Nooo….She ain’t bluffin’.” There
was a world of depth, of determination in those eyes that she couldn’t bare
to see.
“Smart kid Cerise. Now you leave Ashlyn be. She’s under my protection. I’m
gonna blame you.”
Ailynn pushed the bully away and strode off, her system still on hte come
down from the adrenaline high.
“Ailynn wait!”
“Ash...now is not…”
“Ailynn prophets dammit. You stand still while I’m thanking you.” Ashlynn
stood there, here eyes afire as she watched the much taller girl, come to a
halt.
“C’mon...don’t be a fl…”
“Ailynn Bracken you may think you’re Queen B. Hell you’re certainly the
most intelligent person in this hell hole, but you will damned well stand
still while I thank you for making my life that tiny tiny but less morose.
“Morose?”
“Miserable Ailynn...Miserable…Prophets can you even read?” Ashlyn strode
off toward the library.
“The hell did I do?” She asked of a passing 6th grader, who shrugged,
baffled at the entire scenario.
