Mission: Murder on the Exeter Express
Day: 2
Stardate: 2445.12.02
(USS Exeter –Observation Lounge – FO Cmdr Ailynn Bracken – 1210)
Ailynn sat back, Ravok’s report giving her much to think of, there were so
many facets to this case, and she knew, even as Kiera began speaking, that
they were in for the long haul on this one.
“Comparing the affected part with known unaffected parts, everyone’s entry
to Tiko’s quarters after the discovery of his remains, I found the
gibberish portions have enough bulk data for two entries and exits and one
either exit only or one entrance only. So either our killer used some other
method to get in, or some other method to get out. Given the time of death
time line outlined by Lieutenant Ravok, that rules out conventional
transporter use, because there would have still been a transporter trace.
In the interest of being thorough Transporter Rooms, main, emergency, site
to site and cargo on board the Exeter were not used during the time period.
Logs were found untampered. Transporters from outside would have left a
similar signal, even if they found someway to do so from a cloaked ship..”
Keira explained.
Ailynn listened with interest. She wasn’t an engineer by any stretch of the
imagination, but she found it fascinating nonetheless. “So where does that
lead us?” She asked Kiera curiously.
“I have a theory.” Keira said with a grin.
~When you have ruled out the possible…~ Ailynn considered obliquely. She
leaned back in concentration as the Second Officer continued her report.
“I ran out of conventional ways to make it happen so I moved to
unconventional.” Keira started. “ Looking though the various databanks and
historical records now available to me as a Lieutenant Commander searches
for a transport system that leaves little or no trace comes up with a type
of transport rejected by the Federation and many of the Alpha quadrant
powers. It’s called colloquially “shifting” but is a method of folded space
transportation based on the Elway Theorem. With it and enough power one
could be transported any distance to a known location nearly
instantaneously. It could even get into and out of a shielded room, or
through any barrier.”
Ailynn spoke up. “Not my field I appreciate, but I read something about
that. There are a lot of reasons that we don’t use Elway shifting.” She
spoke with a shake of her head, rubbing her temples. It had been a very
long day already.
“Well it has a few really big flaws. It takes quite a bit of power to use,
substantially more than conventional transporters. The device also causes
subspace pressure modulations on both sides. Finally the last flaw, and
according to my file, the part that caused Alpha quadrant major powers to
drop research, repeated use causes cumulative damage to subject’s genetic
material that eventually prove fatal.”
“I would ask if someone would actually do that, all things considered…”
Ailynn observed quietly.
“If you wanted someone dead bad enough? Some people are that crazy. Good
news I think we can track it’s use. Now that we know what we are looking
for.” Keira answered.
“Anything detectable by this type of shifting? Sub-particle byproducts,
Quantum state fluctuation? I mean it’s been a while since my transporter
physics lectures, but I was listening in...some..of them.” Ailynn’s tone
was slightly whimsical, a by-product of there being far too many questions
left unanswered, and those that they had, had only asked more questions
than they had started with.
(Reply Kiera, any)

As the questions from Kiera’s section drew to a close Ailynn got up out of
her seat, and stretched slightly. “Forgive me, I prefer to be on my feet
while I do this, tend to think better.” She took a sip of water, and then
spoke up. “Computer, display file Bracken - six - omega - three.”
[Confirmed. Presentation displaying.]
“First things first. What I am about to tell you is going to open up even
more questions than it can answer. I can only present the absolute, medical
truth as I see it. Captain, I took the liberty of running my data past the
Admiral, and she confirmed my time of death, as we previously discussed.”
she turned to Kiera and Ravok. “We’ll come to that momentarily.”
(Reply Trip/Kiera/Ravok IYW)
“Commander Nix was a reasonably healthy, highly trained Officer. Bajoran
Male, aged 45. Body mass showed a slightly higher than normal subcutaneous
fat, all congruous with age, body type and physiological expectation. No
sign of cardiac trauma or fatal toxicity, no sign of renal failure or
ketonacidosis, no sign of fatal blood toxicity, no sign of fatal stomach
toxicity, or allergy induced toxicosis. He was...in short...utterly
healthy, and despite the presence of toxins in his system, all of them are
way below the LD50 of a Bajoran his type and age.”
(Reply any)
“Diet was reasonable, if sometimes ill-advised. Onto the more interesting.
Subject was found naked in his room. Behavioural analysis suggests that
this would be unusual for an officer of his type. However, no sign of
sexual contact, secondary inspection showed no evidence that he had had or
was expecting intercourse.”

“Computer slide 12.”
The display flickered, to show the scan of the rear of Nix’s skull as it
had been when the body had been found. “Note the massive trauma to the rear
of the skull. Now I would genuinely love to tell you that this is what
killed him, however this was done post mortem, I’ve seen the rolling pin,
I’m happy enough to say that that was the item that did this damage,
however….” She clicked to the next slide. “Repiecing the skull back
together, shows that cause of death was a brutal, sharp break to the neck.
Massive trauma to cervical vertebrae 1. Death instantaneous. Given the
evidence, I think that Nix knew his killer…” She sipped at the water again.
“Trip, We went over this earlier, and I can’t get past this thought...how
did the killer get so close? However, it’s my belief that our female
suspects simply don’t have the physical strength, or the rage to do this.”
(Reply Trip)
She nodded, and carried on. “Two more things. Firstly; We are dealing with
a suspect or suspects that display an extreme capability of forensic
countermeasure”
(Reply any)
“Lastly. All cards on the table.” She leant on the back of her chair,
having walked all the way round the table a couple of times; Ailynn could
never sit still.
“The three of you know the position I’m in, one of my closest friends and
my girlfriend are both suspects, I have been utterly neutral in my report.
If you find yourself disagreeing with any point, or even object to my
neutrality in this matter, please take it up with Trip in the first
instance, and he will inform SFMHQ, I have nothing to hide. Any questions?”
