Listening. Watching, Observing and Learning. She was evolving and was endlessly intrigued by the small ones that were inhabiting her skin. Over the past week Vex had spent so much time explaining things to Luma about how Starfleet and the structure of rank worked. Luma knew about cats, the Sienna and the Sekal had small cats in their quarters, and both had let Luma feel what petting the cats was like. And Luma had discovered the Skyrim game that much of the crew played, and so Luma had interacted with the cats in that game. But it appeared that there was a walking, sentient cat aboard the skin and this captivated and intrigued Luma to no end. And so, . Luma waited impatiently, an energy filling engineering, a toddler's excited anticipation that made the very air almost vibrate to the thrum of the warp reactors.. She bubbled excitedly when Keira went to dismiss the Caitian, Luma's voice coming from all around them, =^= The Keira!!! Who is the Kitty!! Where do the Kitty people come from? Did she escape from the holodecks game of Skyrim? The Keira can help Luma get out too?=^= Luma had played Skyrim with several of the crew, often inserting herself into the program where she could interact with the crew. There was a great feeling of intent focused on the caitian and the half-romulan. The sentient spaceship was very focused on the caitian. =^=Can Vex pet her? So I can feel what her fur feels like? And would the Keira please introduce Luma to the Kitty?!?=^= ::Vex wake up! There is a kitty-person aboard!:: Luma near sang out her joy, likely interupting the sleep cycles of all the telepaths on board in her over-exuberance. (reply Vex, M'Rurrh, Merek, any) (posted by Mel) (USS Mystique, Personal Quarters - ENG/OPS, Ens(jg) Vex'ahlia Jordaan - 0647) Vex had slept in a little longer than she normally would have, working double shifts across Engineering and the Bridge in an effort to teach Luma as much as was possible in the time they had together during the trip. It was enjoyable, but it had taken a toll as she'd slept through the 630am alarm without even the possibility of waking up. ::Vex wake up! There is a kitty-person aboard!:: Vex's eye opened up suddenly, she wiped her eyes and mouth and looked around concerned. It wasn't unusual to be woken up by Luma, but this time it was so explosive Vex knew she would be visiting telepaths all day making sure they hadn't been too alarmed by the phy-power of Luma's delightful scream. And it was delightful, after a few seconds sitting in the bed Vex could feel the unadulterated joy streaming from Luma to her, ::What is it?:: she asked as she stood up and stretched, there was clearly more to this than an errant cat on board. (Reply Luma) Luma showed Vex an image of a Caitian Starfleet Officer walking the corridor of the Mystique in the unique way only she could and before Vex could respond she fell about laughing. An uncontrollable fit of laughter rolled over her and she fell back onto the bed for a few minutes before they could subside. She knew exactly why Luma would be so excited to see this person and why she'd woken her up. She took a deep breath and composed her thoughts before responding, ::A new crewmember? And someone for Engineering! You want me to go meet them?:: she asked, ignoring the obvious fact that the crewperson in question looked like a giant cat. And would the Keira please introduce Luma to the Kitty?!?=^= “I suppose this was bound to happen sooner or later,” she admitted. “Ensign M'Rurrh, the voice you are hearing is named Luma'lenai, she’s a psionic space entity that was trapped decades ago inside the bioneural gel packs of the Mystique’s computer core. We call her Luma for short.” (Reply M’Rurrh, Luma) “I know it’s a lot to take in, and nothing in the academy really prepared you for it,” she said backing up slowly, “you can converse as long as you like, Ensign Vex one of the other Engineers will likely be along shortly,” she backed up some more. Bother her hands were up in front of her, she mouthed the words “I am so sorry.” When she reached the exit to engineering, “Vex will be able to tell you everything you need to know.” (Reply M’Rurrh, Luma or a very speedy Vex) She waited a short moment for any protests from the Caitian officer. “I’m due on the bridge, excuse me.” She said and headed to the bridge. (Reply M’Rurrh, Luma, Vex, any) (posted by Todd) (USS Mystique – Ready Room - CO - Admiral Remae Ktell – 0815) It seemed the Wraith had one more surprise for the crew of the Mystique, with another chime at the door. A new face appeared and came to attention before their Admiral. "Yes, Ensign... I take it you are a new arrival?", he said, looking over the recently embarked Ensign, backpack and all. "That is correct, admiral. My name is Ensign Stennin. I was sent here to assist the scientific department.", reported the Vulcan and Remae simply nodded in approval. A PADD was present and natually, Remae popped it onto his desk for later review. "... Admiral, may I inquire, what is my purpose here at this moment?", asked the Ensign and Remae thought it about that question for a moment. "As a member of the Science Department, you are to report to Ensign Williams-Verin, our Acting Assistant Cheif Science Officer.", he said and waited for a moment before adding, "Our head of Research, Ensign Sekal could also use a hand Ensign so, make yourself useful. Dismissed.", he said before returning to his screen as the new arrival spun around and left the Ready Room. (Reply from None) (Posted by Anthony Keen) (Trill Surface - Tresh Park District, Golden Sun Cafe – Intelligence officer Ens JG Jaelle Foxglove - 13.47) Jaelle listened to the conversation at the table and the protest coming from the plaza. It seemed most people on Trill were on a edge. The older populace that remembered the good the Federation was able to accomplished were more in favor of returning. It seemed the Andorians were here more to force the hands of the people, to give another option to the Federation. But the younger people of Trill where having none of it, they wanted there homeland to remain independent from the assistance of other worlds. Worlds that they believed would threaten there core values. Jaelle nibbled at her fruit as she took it all in, it was at its core an contradiction. A world that claimed to be mostly pacifist by nature being moved to such violence. Glancing she observed a mentioned drone passing overhead. "I guess the protest on Trill is as good news as any news." She spoke softly to herself but loud enough to be heard. (Reply anyone in group) Then Carson made the call for seeing if there was any place that the group wanted to go. "I was curious about going to look at some of the near by gardens. Jaelle replied cheerfully. The gardens was hardly 'getting into trouble' as Boone was told what the group would be up today. Never the less, Boone was used to a more sandy and non-green environment back at home so he could try his hand at viewing a garden. "I'm willing to continue to tag along. Please, take the lead." Pausing Trip looked at the group of protestors, focusing on them, trying to read their emotions. He wasn't as good as his sister but he could still make out the 'mobs' emotions if he tried hard enough. Starring at them, focusing on them, he was able to ascertain their intent so to speak. However it took a lot out of him. Taking a napkin he began dabbing the nose bleed he had received and turned back to his companions. "These poor fools, they're harmless. They think themselves pacificist and self-righteous. Gotta 'whiff' of them so to speak. They've seen us, well I think they have, because they 'reek' for lack of a better term fear. That crowd is afraid of us. They wont mess with us, but that doesn't mean there aren't others out there who might not feel the same. So wherever you go, please go with a buddy. Safety in numbers. Have fun, be smart, stay safe, and bring back a souvenir." Trip then smiled as the food came and the group began eating. Sekal stood to his feet as the conversation waned. "I understand your time is valuable minister and will leave you to your duties. Thank you for seeing me." (Reply: Kazran) He raised his right hand in salute. "Live long and prosper." (Reply: Kazran) Sekal then nodded crisply and left the office. Once outside the building he hailed the ship and upon finding out that the Admiral was still in a meeting upon the Kir Kuma with the Andorians decided quite logically that his presence upon the planet was no longer necessary. With the comm line still open he spoke. "Transporter room, one to beam up." He had just signed off when the hum around him began to rise and he faded away in a column of bluish light. (Reply none) (Posted by Jackie) (Kir Kumari - Sickbay - CO - Admiral Remae Ktell - 1520) Remae was looking at his officer, Ensign Taya with concern as she explained what happened to her. "... I'm not clear on all the details, but some others helped me and had me beamed here.", she said and it sounded like his Andoiran Officer had given the attackers a run for their money. He wasn't smiling at the whipping they would have received but he stood a little taller at the thought of Ensign Taya not standing for any nonsense. "Ensign Taya is my daughter. I'm her shen mother.", said Commander Tesha and Remae looked at her really for the first time. He wasn't sure what a shen mother was but it didn't make any difference, she was family and Remae extended his hand to her. "Commander, it pleases me to hear she is going to be alright. I would like for her to return to the Mystique when she is able but I will leave you alone. My apologies for interrupting.", he said before looking over his injured Security Officer and nodding with a slight smile on his face. His guard was waiting at the door and he returned to the Conference Room. (Kir Kumari, Sickbay, Tactical Ensign jg Taya, 1522) "Commander, it pleases me to hear she is going to be all right," said Remae. "I would like for her to return to the Mystique when she is able, but I will leave you alone. My apologies for interrupting." "No interruption, Admiral," said Tesha. "Thank you." Taya observed everyone's reactions. The admiral was glad she was well, but she thought there was more there. Not sure, she could easily see that Shreva was happy to spend some time together. "Dr. Obal, I'd like to talk with Ensign Taya in private," said Tesha. "Of course, Commander," said Obal. "You can use my office." 'We'll be using the lounge down the hall," said Tesha. "Commander...." "I'm still a physician. My daughter will be fine. I take full responsibility for her." "Yes, Commander." Taya could see that Dr. Obal wasn't happy. "Doctor, thank you for saving me." She smiled. Obal nodded. Outside in the corridor, the two women passed several members of the crew. They showed respect to their commander, but they also gave Taya odd looks. Stories, rumors, and gossip spread fast on a starship. A thaan male looked her over in her shorts and tank top and gave her a wink. Taya smiled, though her cheeks grew warm again. Stepping inside the lounge, Tesha faced Taya. "You look good, Shei. It's been, what, five months since you were able to send a message?" "Four." "Yes, four," said Tesha. "Tell me everything. Tell me how you ended up on an outdated ship, from a neglected base, on a mission to Trill. And when was the last time you spoke our language? You have an accent you never had before." "I'm not around other Andorians, so I don't have occasion to speak it," said Taya. "You should make an occasion. Does Starfleet still have holodecks or are you back in the stone age?" Taya smirked. "We have holodecks." "Then use them. I can give you some programs before you go back to the Mystique." "Thank you." Tesha sat down and motioned for Taya to do the same. "Now, out with it. What's happened with you since you last wrote?" Taya recounted the tale of her last months at Starfleet Academy. Things had changed greatly for her over the four years she was there, so even though she was assigned to the Mars base, she was proud of her accomplishments. "You've done well, Taya, though you should be on a starship." "You know we go where we're needed." "True, but it does seem the people in Starfleet that make those decisions, didn't know what to do with you." Taya chuckled, as she had felt the same. During a few moments of silence, Taya worked up the courage to ask something that had been on her mind since she left home. "Shreva, why was I allowed to leave Andor for Starfleet, especially when I was at the prime age for the shelthreth? Why did the government let me go?" Tesha's face went from pride and happiness, to shock, followed by sorrow. Seeing the pain in her eyes, Taya immediately regretted asking. Tesha stood up and walked to the window. She stared at the lush planet spinning below. "People thought I was a spy," said Taya as she stood up, too. "Some still do. I'm sorry, but I need to know." Tesha let out a deep sigh. "All right," she said softly, "but you won't like what you're going to hear." Still looking out the window, she began. NRPG: shelthreth: The act of procreation after the four bonded genders are married. (reply none) (posted by Rob Brown) (Kir Kumari, Observation Lounge 4, Tactical Ensign jg Taya, 1526) Tesha let out a deep sigh. "All right," she said softly, "but you won't like what you're going to hear." Still looking out the window, she began. Taya tried to imagine what her mother was going to say that was so bad, she wouldn't like it. She knew that Shreva was alienated from her clan, Solom'aa, because she chose Starfleet over serving in the Imperial Guard, something that was a clan tradition going back to the days the Guard was formed. In fact, before Tesha, no Solom'aa had ever served off world. There was family and clan tension that was so bad, Tesha hadn't been home for twelve years. "Twenty-five years ago, when my shreva was injured in a border skirmish with the Dra'zadi, I took an emergency leave and went home to Andor," said Tesha. Taya knew that story. It happened when the Hades, Tesha's ship in Starfleet, was taken out of service for upgrades. The trip home was the beginning of a reconciliation long overdue. "You know I left the Solom'aa clan and joined the Mila'aa, but you don't know the real reason," said Tesha. Taya was confused. She had been told that Shreva changed clans in a move that made the two clans political allies. There was another reason? "When it was certain my shreva was going to fully recover, I was called to appear before the clan," said Tesha. "The Solom'aa is very powerful and influential, so there were still those that felt I had shamed the clan and needed to answer for it." Tesha was still looking out the window. "After much deliberation, I was given three options." Taya was so anxious to know what happened, she felt as though she was going to burst. Her antennae were shaking. Tesha continued. "I could restore my honor by fighting an ushaan-tor with the Clan Matron. I could return to Starfleet and be permanently banished from Andor. I could leave Solom'aa and either be clanless or search for another that would accept me." Taya felt like she had been kicked in the stomach. She was regretting asking why the government allowed her to join Starfleet. "I didn't want to fight the Matron," said Tesha. "I was so out of practice with my ushaan, I wouldn't have lasted long anyway. I didn't want to be exiled, so I took the only real option available. The Mila'aa were a small, unimportant clan, so they were glad to accept someone with my skills and experience." Tesha turned and faced Taya. "Even after all these years, there were still Solom'aa in the government that hated what I did. When you asked to join Starfleet, it wasn't to be a spy or the first step to reunify our people with the Federation, it was to punish me and be rid of you." Taya's shoulders slumped and she sat down. "Powerful people in the government didn't consider you an asset to the good of our world, but as the spawn of dishonor. I'm sorry." (reply none) (posted by Rob Brown) (Kir Kumari, Observation Lounge 4, Tactical Ensign jg Taya, 1529) Tesha said, "Powerful people in the government didn't consider you an asset to the good of our world, but as the spawn of dishonor. I'm sorry." Taya stared at the floor while she processed what she had been told. Her emotions were churning. Her antennae were leaning forward. "Taya?" "I'm all right." Taya's voice was quiet. More silence. "Please say something," said Tesha. Her face showed the pain she was feeling. Taya got up, walked to her mother, and placed her hands on Shreva's shoulders. Taya's eyes were welling, but she was holding back the tears. "You didn't do anything wrong and I don't blame you for anything," said Taya. "You stood for what you believed and wanted for your life, against great pressure." Tears were running down Tesha's face and dropping to the floor. "You were on the verge of exile and rejection, but after moving to a clan of lesser renown, you joined the Imperial Guard, became a chief medical officer, and are now the FO on one of Andor's most important ships. Despite what some say, you're serving our world and our people, with strength and honor." A small smile formed on Tesha's face. "Though I'm the only Andorian in Starfleet, which hasn't been easy, I'm happy. Your example gave me the strength to do what I'm doing now. If it wasn't for you, I couldn't be wearing the uniform. Shreva, I'm proud of you." Tesha burst into a full cry and the mother and daughter embraced. More love than Taya had experienced in her life, was sweeping through her. It was like the spring thaw moving across her world, bringing flora and fauna back to a renewed life. She didn't know how much time had passed, but when the embrace ended, both women laughed and hugged again. "Kar Sheia gave me time to see you," said Tesha, "but I'm going to need to get back to my duty. I'm sure the Mystique needs you, too." Taya nodded. "I'll take you back to Dr. Obal to set his mind at ease, then someone will escort you to the transporter room. We'll see each other again before our mission ends here." "Count on it," said Taya. Taya had a lot to process, and wherever things went, she had a fresh perspective on the path that lay ahead. I hope you don't mind but I will ask an Medical Officer from the Mystique to be available, as well?", he said to the Captain of the Andoiran ship. (Reply from Sheia) "Very well, we'll adjourn for now, can we talk again later?", he asked and when their conversation was over, Remae and the other officers were returned to their transporter room, it wasn't in his nature to leave an officer behind but, under the care of her shen mother, Ensign Taya would be in good hands. (USS Mystique – Transporter Room - CO - Admiral Remae Ktell – 1540) The away team, minus Ensign Taya returned to their ship and even as they materialised, Remae was on the comm to issue orders, "Medical Team to Transporter Room, Ensign Taya is on the Andoiran ship and requires medical assistance... security, go with them, unarmed if you please." he ordered as he stormed off the transport pad, his mood was foul. He had the feeling he was being played and the situation with Trill attacking one of his own. Leaving behind the team to their own devices, he was out the door without another word but he stopped and looked around at them. "Still wished I would have gotten a few internal scans of the systems. Maybe we'll get another opportunity?", and she looked at him for a moment, "You never know, Ensign. not around here, anyway.", he said and with no further questions, they were dismissed to return to duty. He laid in bed for a few minutes, unwinding and freely thinking. He turned so he could see out his window and stared at the stars. He thought about home, about his family. He certainly missed the people he once connected with. So far, he felt that he hadn't found his group of people on his new assignment, but he hoped that would change. As he stared at the speckled view he thought about his thoughts and realized that he wasn't here to make friends. He was there to do Echo Earth proud, and to make a difference in Starfleet on behalf of his home world. Had he been successful at that duty today. Should he have stayed on the Mystique and worked. As his eyes began to shut his last thoughts to himself was that his mission was going to be harder than he originally thought.
