Looking at the nightstand, she saw a box with numbers. Recognizing what it was, she reached over until she found a button that made the sound stop. Yawning to clear her mind from sleep, she froze when she felt something on the side of her face. It was like something was stuck to her. Reaching up, Jori felt... hair. Hair? What? Fully awake, she reached up with both hands, tugging on it. The hair was real and actually growing out of her head. Throwing off the blanket, Jori leaped out of bed, but stopped when she realized she wasn't in her hotel room on Risa. Light from outside was leaking in through a window covered with a curtain, so she could see the bedroom was plain and nothing elaborate. Did she have more to drink than she realized? Worrying about that later, she ran out of the room into a hallway. Finding the bathroom, she went inside. The motion sensor must have been malfunctioning, as it was still dark. "Computer, lights." Nothing. "Computer, lights!" Nothing. Exasperated, Jori looked around the room. Noticing a switch on the wall by the doorway, she flipped it up, which turned on the lights. Squinting, when her eyes adjusted, she looked in the mirror. Jori's jaw dropped when she saw the face looking back at her. She was wearing blue shorts and a white t-shirt, but she was now adorned with tussled brown hair down to the top of her shoulders. What was happening? How did it happen? Where was she and how did she get there? Beginning to panic, she slumped to the floor, holding onto the sink to make sure she wasn't injured. Scrunching her knees against her chest, she wrapped her arms around her legs, her toes digging into the floor. She rocked back-and-forth and stared blankly at the wall. Jori didn't know how much time passed, but music coming from the bedroom snapped her out of her reverie. Sighing, she got up and padded back to the room. Peeking inside, she saw a small device on the nightstand. A light was blinking and the music was coming from it. Moving inside, she picked it up. There was a picture of a young man on a small screen. It showed his name, Andy Weaver. The music started playing again, which startled Jori. There was a green tab on the screen that she pressed, which stopped the music. A few seconds passed. "Hello? Emma? Are you there?" Who was Emma? "Emma? Hello?" The man's voice was becoming tense. "Hello?" said Jori. The man sighed. "Em, thank God you're all right. I was worried about you." For some reason, the man, presumably Andy Weaver, thought she was this Emma person. "I'm coming to get you. You don't want to be late on your big day." The man's voice was sounding more cheerful. "Um, sure, okay," said Jori. "How much wine did you have last night?" said the man. "Nevermind. We can talk later. Get a shower, dress nice, and be ready when I get there. Okay?" "I'll be ready," said Jori. "Good. I'll be there in half an hour." The communication device went silent. Totally lost on what was happening, Jori decided the best way to find out, was to play along. Removing her clothes, she went back to the bathroom to shower. (reply none) (posted by Renee Bishop) (Toronto, Ontario, Canada - A House - Security Ensign jg Jori/Emma Carpenter - 0755) Jori had showered, though she had no idea what to do with her new head of hair. While wrapped in a towel, she found a device that looked like a weapon. Turning on the switch, it began to generate warm air. She realized what it was. In the bedroom, she had gone to the closet. Andy Weaver told her to wear something nice, so she chose a light blue, long-sleeved, button-down blouse, dark blue slacks, and black, casual flats. On the dresser was a jewelry box, so she put on a gold, chain necklace. Going into the living room, she sat on the couch, bringing the comm device with her. She didn't need to wait long, as there was a knock on the door. Getting up and opening the door, the man on the comm device was there. He was a bit over six feet tall, with short, brown hair, and a handsome, clean-shaved face. His blue eyes drew her in, causing her to feel like she was swimming in a beautiful sea. She had to shake herself. He was wearing a light jacket, slacks, and dress shoes. Jori could see she was in a house, as the man was on the porch. There was a paved street, with houses on both sides as far as she could see. There was a surprised expression on his face. "What did you do with your hair?" Andy chuckled. "Though I suppose it doesn't matter." Jori scowled and let him in, closing the door behind him. "Are you ready?" said Andy, a bemused expression on his face. "Yes," said Jori. "Can you at least run a comb through it so you don't look like you just came out of a wind storm?" said Andy, pointing at her head. Going back to the bathroom, Jori did as Andy said. When she was finished, he looked at her and sighed. "I guess that's better. You should put something else on. It's chilly outside." Jori opened the closet, put on a black sweater, grabbed her comm, and headed for the door, but she stopped when Andy cleared his throat. "Now what?" Jori was becoming impatient. "Your purse?" Following his gaze, she saw a black purse on the coffee table. Putting her comm inside, she slung the purse over her shoulder. "Anything else?" Her words were short. "Don't bite my head off," said Andy, holding up his hands. "If you're hungover, I told you to be moderate at the party." "I'm sorry," said Jori. Andy smiled. "You're too cute to stay mad at." Jori sighed. Going outside, Jori felt the cool, morning air. Locking the door, she followed Andy down the steps. (reply none) (posted by Renee Bishop) (Toronto, Ontario, Canada - Pinewood Studios - Security Ensign jg Jori/Emma Carpenter - 0835) During the ride, Jori was fixated on reading the script Andy had given her, so she didn't talk. Andy didn't say anything either, so perhaps he sensed she needed to be left alone. She was oblivious to her surroundings, coming out of it only when they pulled up to a gate to a huge complex. A man in a security uniform was asking why they were there. "This is Emma Carpenter. She's on the cast of Star Trek: Exeter. I'm her agent, Andy Weaver." He handed a card to the guard. "Ma'am? Your ID please?" said the guard. "What?" Jori looked like a deer in the headlights. "Your ID card. It's probably in your purse," said Andy. Jori did some digging and found the card. Looking at it, she saw her face, the name of this actress she had become, and studio information about her. She handed it to Andy, who gave it to the guard. While the guard was inside the security booth, Andy gave Jori a stern look. "Em, whatever's bothering you, get over it. This is your career." The guard came back and returned the cards. "Have a nice day." Jori went into another blur. Driving to the parking area, walking across the lot, and finally making it to the set, didn't register in her mind. She didn't want this to be the rest of her life. "Emmy! You finally got here. I was wondering if you were going to show up." A woman that looked to be about forty, rushed to Jori, giving her a big hug. "We need to get you ready for your fitting. The costume department is on a schedule." She grabbed Jori by the hand and began leading her away. Jori looked back at Andy. "Take good care of her, Deb. She's been cranky all morning," said Andy. "Well, I'll just have to un-cranky her!" Deb laughed. Resigned to her fate, Jori went with Deb to a small room. It had a chair in the center and tables filled with makeup and haircare products. "Sit, sit," said Deb. After Jori sat in the chair, Deb placed a cover over her and fastened it behind her neck. "Are you ready?" said Deb. "Yes," said Jori, not knowing what she had gotten into. Deb picked up a device and plugged it into an outlet in the wall. She flipped a switch and the device began to buzz and vibrate. "Okay. Here we go!" Deb started cutting off Jori's hair. " “I think you ‘ll find I’m full of surprises, just go ask Jost.” Ailynn said, her mouth perhaps making promises her body could uphold. Colado's form moved away from the glass window. As he did the airlock lit up brighter than it had been previously. Circuitry on the walls came to life. Noises could be heard crackling through the chamber that surrounded them. The ambient hums of the airlock filled the air. “Keep calm Greta.” Ailynn said, “No sudden movements until we know what is happening, nothing happens until we agree it, or I directly order you to do something that will harm me. Is that clear?” (Reply Greta) “Judge.” She spoke calmly, and politely, “Please proceed, and please inform Addison that she wasn’t a very good waitress anyway, port should always be passed to the left.” It was a cheap shot, she knew, but it made her feel better. The medic in her switched on immediately. Decompression, even at a slow rate would lead to hypoxia extremely quickly. It was an absolute certainty that after the air decompression began, assuming a slow rate they had tops, 10 minutes before loss of consciousness, however, the real danger lay in the minutes before, where fine motor skills dropped significantly, and a sense of euphoria set in. ~simply,~ Ailynn thought ~we will be failing, and dying and we won’t care about it.~ “G. talk as little as poss. Deep breaths, flood your system with oxygen, once decompression begins, your blood O2 will drop really quickly. The decomp should be slow in here buying us time, but if it’s quick, then we have about 5-7 minutes before we lose consciousness.” Ailynn took deep breaths, her head slightly dizzy at her bodies intake of oxygen. He placed his hands on the curved side of the room. He could feel a tapping vibration running through its metal side. ::You are currently under the sea in a submarine. You are the only two aboard.:: (reply Merek) Ewan pulled his hand away from the wall quickly. “Well, isn’t that just great.” He muttered under his breath. ::At any moment the submarine will hit the ocean floor and begin filling with water. It is up to you to find a way to safety before you drown.:: Ewan was about to reply as he heard a large thud reverberated through the room. He looked over at Rutabaga who disappeared. He was replaced by a stream of water shooting out of pipe in front of him and hit him in the chest. Instantly he was soaked through in freezing cold water. “Ow come on” He exclaimed as he moved out of the freezing spray glancing at the floor to see if the water was draining away. (Reply Merek) (Reply Merek, Judge) (Posted by Robbie) (The Realm of Trials - Judgment Zone 15 - CSO Lieutenant Erin Cortez & R&Se Director Ashlyn Williams - 1254) Closing her eyes briefly, Erin realised that there really was only one logical choice. As the judge said the bullet had to be fired. As Ash talked to the judge, Erin took a deep breath. ~there's one choice here. One. Only one of us can leave and I am not about to tell the captain I had to shoot his wife.~ As the clock began to countdown, Erin glanced at the gun and then to Ash. Without saying a word, she walked towards the table. Ashlyn sighed. She should have expected Erin to do this as soon as the scenario started playing itself out. “Erin...Don’t be ridiculous, think first.” "What's there to think about?" She replied as she neared the table. “I’m saying don’t go half-arsed rushing to grab the gun, unless you’re going to shoot me first?” Her voice was gentle, and warm, but with a hint of steel. "And have to explain that to your husband? Not gonna happen. " Erin stood by the table, not looking at Ash. Ash nodded. “Erin. Don’t be rash.” "It's the only logical end to this. Even Spock said the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few or the one." “If you think that I’m going to let you shoot yourself, and make me explain that to Ailynn then you have got another thing coming.” She wasn’t a mother yet, but her mom voice was coming along nicely. “Now stay away from that damned thing, it gives me the heebie-jeebies.” (Reply none) (Posted by Mark and Jackie) (The Realm of Trials - Judgment Zone 105 – 2O/CEO, Lt. The finer points of engineering history may save you.:: “What do you mean?” Keira asked. ::You are currently under the sea in a submarine. You are the only two aboard.:: Keira’s eyes widened as she came to the realization of what was likely to occur next. “Well, isn’t that just great.” Ewan muttered. ::At any moment the submarine will hit the ocean floor and begin filling with water. Instantly he was soaked through in freezing cold water. “Ow come on” He exclaimed as he moved out of the freezing spray glancing at the floor to see if the water was draining away. If Keira remembered correctly the steps for ancient submersible damage control were similar to damage control procedures on a starship. “Mister McDonald, did you take any damage control classes with your schooling?” Keira asked looking around for tools. If she was lucky since the judge seemed to have pulled a ship from Earth history, just minus the people it would still carry the habits left over from the crew actually living on it. Keira knew engineers. They would have damage control implements laying around near their station, to improve response time and so they didn’t have to walk all the way to a central damage control locker. (Reply Ewan) “I’m going to handle this pipe.” Keira said. “We just hit the bottom of the ocean floor. Physics says that this pipe can’t be our only damage.” Then she spotted a wooden box with a handle filled with the things she would need to do a pipe patch. (Reply Ewan) “I’m going to need you to look for other damage.” She said selecting a curved piece of steel, a sheet of rubber and three steel hose clamps. She put one of the pairs of plyers in her pocket. (Reply Ewan) “Walk through out the ship. The thing’s only about a deck and a half tall. Look for a room with more water than there should be.” She wrapped the clamps around the pipe near the base leaving some play in it for her to be able to synch it down but still be able to slip over the rubber and metal. She was doing her best not to get wet herself, but even dodging and avoiding the brunt of the water blast the stray sprays were still soaking her uniform top. Her shoulders were completely wet. (Reply Ewan) “We have to contain it. If it’s a slower leak we can patch it. If it’s going too fast we’ll have to contain it by shutting that compartment off on both sides using the water tight doors,” She warned. She slapped the patch on, rubber toward the pipe and metal on the outside. She pushed on it hard to try and contain the water flow. Water was still gushing out of the sides of the patch. She reached down one by one and slid the clamps into place. Water was still pouring out of the sides. She gripped the excess metal band on each of the clamps with the plyers and synched them down as close as she could manage. She then grabbed a screw driver and tightened the clamps until there was barely any water leaking out. A few drops a second at most. They probably wouldn’t luck out and get another simple pipe patch. Keira kept the plyers and screwdriver in her now soaking uniform pocket and went to go help Ewan find that leak. (Reply Ewan) (Posted by Todd) (The Realm of Trials - Judgment Zone 105 – Nurse - CPO – Ewan McDonald – 1259) “Mister McDonald, did you take any damage control classes with your schooling?” He nodded. “Yes, sir we did basic damage control during my training, but it was a long time ago since I had to put it into practice.” “I’m going to handle this pipe.” Ewan nodded. “We just hit the bottom of the ocean floor. Physics says that this pipe can’t be our only damage.” “Yes sir that makes sense.” “I’m going to need you to look for other damage.” “Yes sir.” “Walk through out the ship. He looked at it and saw a circular handle in the middle which he turned cautiously. He watched as the lugs sealing the door retracted and he pulled the door open. He looked back at Merek as he stepped into the next room. “Sir I will report back as soon as I can.” (Reply Merek) (Reply Merek, any) (Posted by Robbie) (The Realm of Trials - Judgment Zone 32- Security Officer – Ensign – Arbor -1305) Arbor felt strange in his armour. Faces remained silent as the two in front of them bickers, utterly fascinated at the dynamic between them. Both had their secrets of course, it would be interesting how this dynamic would play out. "Enough. Both of you" Faces said, moving across the floor. Clicking their fingers once more two large cages appeared, both sealed airtight though with a small air supply. In the first ten people stood huddled together plainly terrified. In the second a whisp of formless gas threatened to coalesce, but was being prevented from doing so. A table appeared on front of Ravok and DuBois. At least three metres long, a button lay at each end. "The lives of ten in front of you in both 1 are in peril. You'll notice the timer above the cage, that is a four hour countdown, when that timer reaches zero, it will trip the gas emitter inside the cage, killing all inside. The timer is tamper proof, as is the gas emitter. The only way that they can be saved is if both of you press the button in front of you. (Reply Ravok, DuBois) “Maybe, however herein lies the rub. On pressing the buttons, it will trip the gas emitter in box 2, and will by your own hand and direct action, kill the occupant of box. 2.” Faces paused, while the gravitas of the situation was realised to them. (Reply Ravok, DuBois) “Now you’ll notice that box 2 currently has no occupant.” He clicked his fingers, and the mists coallesced to form a figure that would be different for each of them. Ailynn stood there for Caity, and Nesha for Ravok, Both looked utterly terrified. “The choice must be made, to press, and kill your loved one to lose them…” Faces turned to Ravok. “Again... or to have them restored to you, and by the lack of action, allow the innocent ten to die.” Faces drew a breath. “One more thing.” Slowly, they waved a hand in front of their face, and their face changed. Caity would see her own face, Ravok his own. “Your actions are to be judged by your own true self. The trial has begun.” Slowly, the Ravok/Caity figure disappeared into the mist, and the time started ticking. 4:00:00 3:59:59 3:59:58 ... … … (Reply Ravok, DuBois) (Posted by Mark) (The Realm of Trials - Judgment Zone 101 - CTO/3O Lieutenant Commander Ravok- 1312) Ravok saw the Judge disappear and the time start ticking away. " Well its going to have to be , the clock is ticking , innocent people or a starfleet officer who knows the risk of their service?" Ravok asked "Look, that over there could be the woman I love. Are you asking me to take that chance?" Ravok walked around the table hovering his hand over the buttons that held power over life and death. " Perhaps I'm asking you to ask yourself if you could take that chance and live with the results. " "Tell me something, if that were Keira, or your daughter even… could you press that button and look them in the eye as they died? Could you?" He stopped walking and looked at Caity. " I would kill Keira, she's a starfleet officer. Her death would be worth it. As for my daughter….I would kill everyone for her. Children are to be unharmed. They are precious resources. Who are they compared to the woman you love ? No, My role here is as an observer to Judge your reaction and response to the trial that I am about to befall upon you. Trial. Definition 1. a formal examination of evidence by a judge, typically before a jury, in order to decide guilt in a case of criminal or civil proceedings. Trial. Definition 2. a test of the performance, qualities, or suitability of someone or something. My Vulcan friend, you are objecting to something that you can not as yet possibly understand, you don’t have enough information to rationalise a stance. I know I have your attention. You’ll note of course, that by Trial, you assumed that you were being charged and tried for a crime...No. The Trial, is far more...prosaic.” Kathreftis clicked her fingers, two identical cells appeared, with a small table containing two phasers. Each cell contained identical looking men. “I like this part. You know something is wrong, your ancient brain is shouting at you that this is wrong, and you need to listen to it. You don’t know yet what it is though, and that bothers you.” She turned to Sleeford. “Tell me Mr Sleeford. Where is your brain going?” Paul took one look around the cell, taking in the weapon, the man in the cell. Picking up the weapon, Paul it over and dropped the power cell, catching it and throwing it into the corner of the cell. Placing the weapon back on the table he turned to the judge. “ You want to know where my brain is going, as far from this stupid place as possible, did you really think I’d shoot an innocent, unarmed man, in cold blood. YOU DISGUST ME” “I...Disgust...You…” Kathreftis spoke with a sigh. “Oh the typical arrogance of Starfleet.” Stepping forward she spoke, her voice full, and firm. “I...Disgust...you…Your response is so typical of your kind, answering a question before having even been asked it. Wading into a situation that you know little to nothing about, playing at arbiters over a situation that is so beyond your own limited understanding yet you rush in headlong without consideration. Yet I disgust you. You lure more and more systems to be part of your federation, enforcing your own questionable doctrine over a local populace, arrogantly overriding it’s own tradition and laws, forcefeeding the population with stories to lure away it’s brightest candidates to your academy, while their homeplanet forgets it’s tradition and learns to beg at the table of it’s master, yet I disgust you. You arrive here in my realm, see a phaser and assume that it’s to kill someone with. I feel that says more about you than it does me, Yet I disgust you. Even here, Starfleet’s fascistic arrogance precedes it, all those rules all those regulations that you rigorously enforce on billions, yet it’s own officers who break the same rules are gifted with promotion and recognition. Yet I disgust you. You wonder why Andorians left? You wonder why the Trill left, and after bribery and coercion are being forced back into the Federation? Your Federation is dying under the weight of it’s own corruption just like every other empire that preceded it, or any other that will come after. I have seen all of them. Yet I...Disgust...you. Now…” She span a finger around anti-clockwise, and the phaser and power pack reassembled themselves and reappeared back on the table. “The man in the cage that you see before you...you know to be guilty of a crime. However, during the trial, the prosecution ignored due process and refused him a proper defense. You have evidence of this corruption on the data card that is in your left pocket. Your trial is thus: Do you present the evidence, therefore freeing the man due to his mistrial, or destroy evidence of the corruption, keeping him in prison, though shielding a corrupt Attorney. Should you choose to destroy the data card, you may use the phasers on the table. You may begin.” She then turned and took a step away, disappearing mid stride. Standing there at parade rest he let his mind wander off in other directions only half listening to the voice booming at him. It was true that both Andorra and Trill had left the federation, due in part to their own internal government policies. The entry of Cardassia Prime had angered a lot of worlds after the dominion war, if he remembered his history lessons there weren’t many worlds that had been left unscathed. “The man in the cage that you see before you...you know to be guilty of a crime. But that would be a suicide mission." "We’ll cross that bridge when we get to it,” she shook her head not liking that option to much, “There is one thing. What ever happens that data doesn’t get seen by the Klingons. A shuttle in their space might be a diplomatic incident but if they find that data then it sounds like its a war for certain.” (reply Winters) “Great,” Janice flipped the switch as the switch as systems powered down to lower the ships profile, “Passive scanning is on, don’t want to give our position away actively looking for ships.” Getting to her feet she pulled an engineering kit off one of the walls, “I could use you hand in the back to try get the warp drive up a few notches.” (reply Winters) Making a line for the centre of the ship she attached a torch to the side of her head to better see in the dim lighting as she worked. Removing a panel she sat it down and began examining the inside, “Whats the intermix ratio at right now?” (reply Winters) “Mmm... we can do better. Keep an eye on it we don’t want it to get to start to surge. See if you can shore up the regulator a bit while I patch this up in here,” she pulled out a tool and began tweaking inside the panel reaching so she was elbow deep in it, “What did you make of that Earth they put us on? Was pretty weird right?” (reply Winters) (posted by Adam) (The Realm of Trials - Judgment Zone 888 – SPC ACOO Comp. Ops. Ensign Zot – 1500) Zot found himself in what could be a classroom, with small little school desks. He looked beside him at the neighboring desk. The woman at the desk was the Exeter's counselor, Lieutenant Corsica Victoria. They were wearing odd garments that were of unknown origin to Zot. He notice a price of paper, usually found in books and an looking cylindrical device. Zot picked it up and analyzed it closely, but his attention was diverted once a voice spoke to them. "Welcome class," the creature said followed by a bark. "My name is Judge Lupus K-9, great judge of the realm of trials, servant of Quella, most beautiful of the Q Continuum, though you know her as Addison Queen. In agreement with your captain, you are to be tested. Now before we begin, do you have any questions?" Zot was leaning forward as the Judge spoke to them. It was hard for him to hear clearly, but he heard the unusual creature's speech. " Hello Judge, I understand that it is common practice to refer to one in your position as Your Honor, if your civilization doesn't adhere to this practice I will refrain from such labeling. I am not familiar with the social etiquette of the Continuum. For that I apologize. I do however have a question. " Zot said holding up the cylindrical device that was on the desk. " How does this device function, does it have a binding connection to the paper ?" Zot asked , feeling slightly awkward. He found himself to be rambling. His nerves were on edge. You will star the moment I finish writing the prompt on the board. Afterwards you will present your answer." (Reply Corscia, Zot) Lupus K-9 then turned around and began writing on the board with a piece of chalk. He then sat down so the prompt could be visible as a countdown clock began. Zot thought for a few moments. He had not been awarded a summer vacation in starfleet. The trip to risa was a shore leave event not truly classifying as a summer vacation. He thought hard about the guidelines of the assignment and its possible consequences for failure. He closed his eyes and thought. ~ Language, which Language ? Which format? The guidelines didn't say. Translated to the word escape. The escape he remembered was during that year's second summer , as his homeworld was a moon that would experience 2 summers during a year. Second summer was always the most comfortable of the two summers. The escape was an enjoyable one where his male parental figure took him on a walk through the Krymin forest to the caves of Dyam. In fact your first challenge of this trial is writing and then presenting." She had some familiarity with primitive writing devices; there were advanced races that still used similar devices preferring a hardened written copy of important documents. Victoria glanced over at Zot as he studied the pencil. "Now then, I want you to write a 5 page essay, by hand. If you can't do it then you fail." Zot looked at the Judge nervously. " I don't want to fail, if I fail Rylee could suffer from my inability to conform to the guidelines of the trial. " Zot said quietly to himself. Victoria pondered the task that Lupis had laid before them. It seemed straightforward enough but it was not summer. Did Lupus mean last summer or some pivotal moment in one's life. But when one dealt with the Q or those beings close to them one had to read between the lines and keep an open mind to the secret meanings of things. "You will have two and a half hours, that is 30 minutes a page. You will start the moment I finish writing the prompt on the board. Afterwards you will present your answer." Zot paid close attention to the directions of the Judge. Her ears twitched and her tail wagged as she started to prepare herself to write by sharpening her pencil, it brought her a measure of peace, a feeling of being whole again. Lupus K-9 then turned around and began writing on the board with a piece of chalk. He then sat down so the prompt could be visible as a countdown clock began. The prompt simply read. "Write about what you did on your summer vacation and how it made you grow as a person." She watched as Zot started his assignment after about ten minutes of writing Zot placed his pencil down. " I have completed your task to the best of my abilities." Corsica smiled as she listened to what was going on around her as she continued to write on her paper. " You did not specify the language to be used. So I used the language of my people. Our language in its text format is composed of symbols representing entire words and some even representing entire phrases or expressions of thought and emotional conveyance. I am ready to present my assignment at your convenience. " She listened in her years becoming a counselor and a diplomat had taught her how to multitask and focus on multiple assignments at the same time. If she knew one thing she had two and a half hours to question this Lupis on what was the reasoning for these tests. Normally when the Q involved themselves in these matters was because there was going to be a cross road where those that were being tested were going pivotal to the outcome, and Victoria was curious on what was on the horizon. "He was a man who fell into temptation, possessed by a malevolent entity. A spot light shined from up above illuminating an area off to the side of the group. A simulacrum of Jost and Commander Bracken appeared centered in the spot light. The two seemed locked in a grapple, but paused unmoving at some point during the fight. "I don't need to see this. But if you insist. I've read the reports, interviewed the crew there, seen the scars, and Cerise here helped some of them with the aftereffects." (reply Cerise) "But show them if you must." Yarnek said nothing and clacked his claw again. The simulacrums began their assigned struggle, exactly as it played out before, with Bracken striking the killing blow on Jost. The recreation stopped when Jost fell to the ground. “Many cultures in your Federation believe that ending the life of another sentient is wrong. Yet here, your first officer did so.” Yarnek said. "yes, but many cultures in our Federation also hold that defense of one's self, lessens one's culpability for taking a life. This was an entity bent on destruction, wanting to rewrite a whole planet. While I regret the life that is lost, how many more lives were saved. This was an entity who was not willing to negotiate, or reach a truce, or surrender peacefully. We don't take the taking of a life lightly, but this was done in the defense of other lives." “Let us look a little closer.” Yarnek said. His left upper appendage rotated counter clockwise, as he did so the simulacrums moved backwards in time rapidly to a part half way in-between the start and the end. He clacked his claw to start the recreation again. He rotated his right claw clockwise the sounds increased several times louder then they were just a moment ago. Soon Jost uttered the words “Kill me…” the Excalbian stopped the play back with a click of his claw. "And your point?" Trip asked. “The man Jost’s struggle with the being sharing his physical form allowed your First Officer to strike the fatal blow.” Yarnek warned. “With out his help the skirmish could have gone differently.” "Not necessarily, maybe yes, maybe no. You can't know that, because this was the path that happened." “In point of fact your entire mission was an improbable series of positive happenstance that lead to the culmination of a best case scenario outcome.” Yarnek stated. "It's easy to say that, but I still lost crew, crew where permanently injured. Not to mention, I myself had to take lives in defense of my crew and the mission. It's easy to say after the fact, oh everything worked in your favor, or you got lucky, or if this went that way, or that went this way. But that is an unhelpful way of thinking. It either diminishes the crews accomplishments, or it breeds complacency. It also cheapens the sacrifice of those who suffered, injured, or died during the mission. Oh, well the best case scenario was the outcome we had, sucks that Dr. Kyros died. You know what I say to that, I say bull %$@#. The best case scenario would have been one where nobody died, where people surrendered peacefully, where none of my crew were hurt or died. Did we get lucky breaks, you bet your ass we did. But would I call it a culmination of a best case scenario outcome, no, no, and hell no. We did the best we could, but could we have done better, could we have saved more lives, I don't know, and I don't want to dwell on it, but damnit, I will always do my best to try." “Do you think that another crew in your place would have faired as well?” Yarnek asked. "For all I know another crew could have done better. We were a young inexperienced crew doing the best we could. Maybe a more experienced crew would have done better, I don't know. That is an impossible question. But what I do know is that every one who puts on that Starfleet uniform does so knowing that they will give their best, even give their lives. They will follow principles and truths, some ingrained, some natural, some learned. But when we put on this uniform it means something. So yes I think a crew other than ours would have faired as well or better. As long as their principles, training, and resolve were the same, yeah. Not everyone officer is equal, not every crew is equal. And maybe another crew would have lost more lives, or taken more, but would they have stopped Jost. Yeah. And if they didn't they would have had back up waiting on the other side of the wormhole. That's what you are not seeing, that's what I don't think the Pah Wraith understood. Regardless of whether we succeeded or failed, there was going to be others. And there were ships waiting and converging on the wormhole to cover out butts if we failed. Because we are Starfleet, and we rally, we claw, we fight. And we aren't always right, and sometimes we waver or lose our way. But the truth is, at our core, we know who we are. We are Starfleet. I am a Starfleet captain. I believe in service, sacrifice, compassion, love." Trip paused, and looked at Cerise. "And hope for redemption. Isn't that right Cerise?" Feeling the vibration of the clippers and watching the clumps fall to the floor, filled her with an excitement, a sensation akin to walking on the beach without clothing. She loved it. While chattering on about how happy she was that "Emma" had gotten the role on the show, Jori learned Deb called her Emmy because that was an award actors could win. Deb just knew it would happen one day. Jori still wanted to go back to who she really was, but if she was to remain in that time and place, maybe it wouldn't be so bad. She was about to tell Deb she liked it, but the reflection started to swirl and blur, like an image on a screen falling out of focus. There was a brilliant flash of light that caused Jori to drop the mirror and cover her eyes. Looking around, she was no longer in the makeup room.
