I’m happy to accompany you, whatever helps settle your mind.” No one would ever know how close to her heart Ash held Ailynn. Obviously she loved and adored everyone in her family, but there was something about Ailynn that totally brought out all her maternal feelings. She was strong, sure, proud, beyond able, and had proven time and time again that she could look after herself. But Ashlyn had made a promise to her sister, Ash knew, and Aimee had confirmed it that Aimee and Ailynn had never really got on massively well, they were far far too similar creatures, with ferociously devoted ideas of sadly rather different philosophies. Ailynn knew she’d made mistakes as a daughter, and Aimee herself had confided in Ashlyn in a lone, heartfelt moment, that she felt that she’d failed as a mother. So Aimee had made Ash promise that she’d keep an eye on Ailynn. It hadn’t sat with her well at all at first, but then, and the feeling increased as she found herself pregnant, that it was the most natural feeling, to worry, and to yearn for someones security, and strong foundation, gave her the profoundest happiness. “You're looking at me weird.” She heard Ailynn say. “It’s early, and I’m not supposed to have caffeine, and I’m carrying extra weight.” Ailynn smiled and hooked an arm around Ashlyn’s, leaning her head on her shoulder briefly, then pointed. “It’s just up here.” They reached the door, and Ailynn nodded to the girl at the desk. “Bracken.” “Relax Ailynn, you’re off duty remember?” Ash nudged. Ailynn nodded. “Sorry. I have a timeslot. Program is the Bajoran Temple?” “Thank you Commander, I have you. Step inside when you’re ready.” Ailynn nodded, and smiled a thanks, and turned to the door, drew a breath, and took a step forward, she’d been inside Temples before, but at each of those points in her life she’d been certain about her past, her current position, and her direction; now though, she was uncertain of each of them. Ashlyn fell slowly into step beside her niece, she wasn’t particularly religious, though would describe herself as a creature of love, being, and spirituality. Accompanying Ailynn to a place like this, even knowing her recent history with the Prophets, was something that she would never have gambled on. Ailynn was a beast of pure logic, distilled cause and effect. “Stop” a voice called across the room as they took a step or two into the expansive room, dimly lit apart from the altar at the far side. The iconography around the room made Ashlyn tremble slightly. She turned to Ailynn who she was surprised to see bowed, head fully down. Ashlyn followed suit. “Rise my daughters.” the Vedek, more correctly an AI, the most advanced created for this purpose. Ailynn raised her head and looked up, her mood calm, but her soul disquiet. “I desire guidance.” “As do many. First, a question.” The Vedek, an older woman dressed in the full regalia as one might expect. She reached out and rang a bell for a few seconds, then touched it again, silencing the resonance. “Can you still hear the bell?” “No” “Yes” “WHAT?” “WHAT?” “Tone is simply a resonance forming a soundwave of compressed air molecules. The bell is no longer ringing, so I can’t hear it.” “The message the bell carried, though now dead in the air lives in our mind, the message lives on in our minds.” “A memory of the message is a reconstruction by a secondary artifact, and therefore detracts from the original.” The Vedek smiled happily as she watched the two young women bicker eventually she held out her arms. “Peace, ladies. I wish I had a classroom full of students like you.” she smiled warmly. “May I greet you? Vedek Rura, at your service, and you?” she turned to the shorter, obviously pregnant. “Ashlyn Williams” Ash spoke quietly. “Daughter of Ronal Ashalan.” she held herself proudly. Her mother had hidden the truth for all her life to keep her safe from the cult of the Pah Wraiths, now though, Ash was not afraid of who she was. “So I see,” reaching out a hand to Ash’s ear, she saw the taller slimmer girl tense and lean forward, protective. Rura turned Ash’s head slightly resting her ear jewelry on the back of her fingers. “Ashalan…all those rumours were true.” Ash saw the Vedek smile. “Fire in your soul and love in your heart, be strong daughter mine, you know your path.” she motioned to Ash’s abdomen. “May I?” Ashlyn felt herself calm. “Of course. Please.” Rura rested a gentle hand on Ash’s bump. “And you, dear child, may you endure the protection that your mother did, rest easy.” Rura stepped across to Ailynn “And you my daughter?” “Ailynn...da” “That is not who you are.” “Pardon me?” Ailynn said, her face flushing and her hackles raising immediately. Ashlyn had known her since her first day of high school, and she knew that if something was going to press Ailynn’s buttons it was being interrupted and her voice discounted. “I am Ailynn Bracken…” “I...didn’t ask you your name. I asked WHO. YOU. WERE. I can call myself ‘amorously-named-cocktail-on-a-beach’ is that what I am? No.” “You are totally ragging on me...I gave you the same answer as…” “She answered my question. You have not.” The reply was harsh, visceral and irritated almost. “She told me who she was” ~Oh dear me~ Ash thought. ~Ailynn is going to utterly flip her shit at an AI Vedek…~ “My name is Conner MacLeod of the clan MacLeod” Ailynn said, annoyed. Ash groaned inwardly, Ailynn had few filters when she was this annoyed. She felt for her though, the Vedek had done her best to irritate her. “WHO ARE YOU?” Ailynn’s temper snapped, utterly. Who the hell did she think she was talking to? “I AM PALADIN!” pulling her sleeve up her left arm. The Vedek smiled. “Finally.” “Was that so hard to admit, my daughter?” Ailynn dabbed the tears from her eyes. “You lost your faith, lost direction no?” seeing the young girls simple nod, the Vedek sighed. “You lost sight of your path, that’s why you’re here, lost sight of who and what you are.” Rura ran her fingers up Ailynn’s forearm. “Ancient, ancient characters, but a meaning that holds true in so many cultures. One whose task it is to walk the line between pf play and study, love and hate, of peace and war,” the vedek looked up at her and continued. “Of paradise, and desolation.” “I thought my task was done.” Ailynn questioned, perhaps sullenly. “Child, the tasks we choose, the paths we walk, never leave us. We may stray from the well trodden route, but the direction that we are destined to go, will always dominate our destiny.” “I’m not finished? I thought that with the wraith that...” “No child. You have chosen your path, now you must awaken and complete the role that you have been picked for.” Ailynn sighed, but nodded. “Thank you mother.” she bowed her head in difference to the older woman, it may be an AI, but Ailynn was not one to ignore a kick up the arse when she received one. “Both of you. Go in your paths well, my children, we are all together the greater than the sum of our parts.” Ashlyn nodded, and led Ailynn out gently, a hand in the small of her back. Ash held the woman’s gaze for a few seconds before following close at Ailynn side. (Reply none) (USS Exeter - Ready Room-CO, Captain Trip Williams - 1300) Trip sat in his office. He had enjoyed his R&R on Risa, but he needed to get back to some paperwork. They would be departing Risa in two days, and he needed to make sure that the ship was supplied and ready to go. The life of a Captain wasn't boring, but it was also filled with tedious paperwork. He figured that it was a good time to record a log. He hadn't done one of those in a while. "Computer begin recording. Captain's log, Stardate 2445.12.31. Here we are, we've reached the end of the year. I've been Captain of the Exeter for four months now and it has been the adventure of a lifetime. Not a day goes by that I am not honored or grateful for the fact that I serve as the youngest captain in Starfleet. Though sometimes it is clear to me that I wish I had more seasoning. I also feel bad for my crew. They are for the most part just as inexperienced as I am. And to tell the truth, they've been through the ringer. The ordeal with the Cult of the Pah Wraith, with members of my crew being kidnapped, one of my medical officers sacrificing his life for my FO, having to chase them to the Gamma Quadrant....it's been, well that was surely a baptism by fire. Since then things had been calmer. Well until the Maxine incident. Members of my crew were tortured and killed. And well....do to certain classified realities, all the know is that one of their own, their family, went rogue and on a rampage as if she were a comic book villain. The R&R on Risa couldn't have come at a better time. I hope that my crew was able to use this time to refocus and relax. Of course looking at all the new coupling paperwork coming in, I think some of them had a better time then others. Still I hope they got what they needed out of this shore leave, and I hope they are ready to brave into the great unknown, and by that I mean 2446. Our orders are to go from here, to do some star charting near the Klingon Border. Should be fun and relaxing. I think they can use something mundane for a change. Lord knows I can. Either way, she's a fine crew and a fine ship. Dum Spiro, Spero. While I breathe, I hope. And the Exeter makes me feel alive, fills me with hope. End Log." (reply none) (USS Exeter – Deck 13 – Ops office – COO LTjg Paul Sleeford 19:00) Sleeford placed the PADD on the desk, most of the department where off duty, Sleeford had made sure that those that needed to be on duty had the opportunity to have a couple of hours ‘rest’ in one on the venues that had been set aside for the parties, his only stipulation was one drink maximum. Although they where in orbit around Risa and the chances of a disaster limited, he didn’t want those on shift drunk. Leaving the office Sleeford made his way around the various operations duty stations, wishing his department personal a healthy and happy new year. Arriving at his new shared quarters he entered, seeing some of the crates still to be unpacked, while other empty ones had been stacked in the corner for transport into the cargo bay. Hearing the sounds of Katie in the shower, Sleeford headed to the wardrobe and looked at his range of suits, selecting the black pinstriped one he laid it on the bed. Looking at his shirts, taking the pale lilac and the deep purple ones he laid them next to the suit. Taking his black George boots he placed them on the floor, completing his ensemble for the night, taking a dark purple tie and pocket square he stripped off his uniform, placing the dirty clothes in the recycling unit. Leaving the bathroom, wrapped in a towel, he sat on the bed, dressing in his suit, he sat there, pulling his boots on. Hearing the sounds of movement behind him he turned to see Katie standing there looking stunning. “You look gorgeous , shall we go and turn some heads?” (Reply Jamison) (USS Exeter - Personal Quarters - FO Cmdr Ailynn Bracken - 1900) It wasn’t just a dress; it was a DRESS. A gift from Ronnie, her cousin back on DS9, Ailynn now stood in front of the full length mirror in her bedroom, and regarded her reflection. It showed an awful lot more skin than only a few months ago she would have dared. An over the shoulder number, it wrapped around her front and back, leaving her arms and her right shoulder uncovered and fitted beautifully at the right side of her waist. The left side of her abdomen, waist and hip. The slate blue brocade then cascaded down her legs, leaving a daring split at the out side of her right leg. Her makeup had taken a lot of work, but her appearance could be described as sultry, smoky eyeshadow, heavy mascara defining her dark expressive eyes, other features accentuated, and the whole ensemble accented with a red lipstick. Now moving back through to her lounge area, she slipped on the shoes that she’d brought from the dressmaker that she'd befriended on DS9, four inch heels, a material and colour that happened to be identical to the dress Ronnie had given her. As she walked around her room, finishing her beautifully styled hair, intricately woven and styled reminiscing a classy look from the 1950s. She walked gently, getting used to them, and discovering a sway to her hips that she didn't normally notice. She accentuated it by placing one leg more in front of the other as she stepped, no...sashayed across her floor. The last thing was a good spray of her most favourite perfume, the one that she knew Caity adored. (USS Exeter – New Quarters – Medical Officer, Ensign JG Katie Jamison, M.D. 19:15) Katie had been working hard unpacking. Not only was she moving back onto the Exeter but she was changing quarters. Moving to shared quarters with Paul. She stood back and looked at the wall which she claimed as her own. Her assortment of Klingon weapons adorned the wall as well as awards she'd received. Once done she hopped in the shower, needing to get ready for the party. She heard Paul enter their quarters and wrapped in a towel, moving to what would be their spare room to change and get ready. She rummaged through the closet to see what she had to wear. She didn't often go to shindigs like this so didn't have a lot to choose from. She chose a sleeveless purple gown with a dark purple flower pattern. Katie heard Paul exit the shower as she was slipping on her heels. Katie exited the room and headed for the main bedroom, stopping in the door and letting out a low wolf whistle, smiling as he turned to look at her. “You look gorgeous , shall we go and turn some heads?” Katie moved to his side. "You look very handsome yourself." She leaned down and kissed him before pulling back. "Yes, let's go give them something to gossip about." She laughed as she stepped back. NRPG: attached file is Katie's Gown (hope this works) (Reply Paul) (USS Exeter - Nine and Dine - FO Cmdr Ailynn Bracken - 2015) Leaving the turbolift, the atmosphere, electric in anticipation of the evening ahead assaulted her, but with a gentle smile, she slowly stepped down the corridor. Nine and Dine was busy, but the people who were there stopped their conversations as they saw Ailynn slink across the room, groups parted to allow the First Officer, all 6'6" of her in these shoes, past. She reached the bar to be greeted by Caity, whose expression was astounded. (Reply DuBois) "Glass of the special red please Caity." She leant over the bar and kissed her briefly. (Reply DuBois) (USS Exeter - Nine and Dine - Civilian Caity DuBois- 2016) As she handed over yet another drink, even though she had been busy, Caity had a smile on her face. The recent events had weighed in the crew and seeing them enjoy themselves had made her happy. As she glanced towards the entrance to her bar, a sight caught her eyes. A sight that made her heart skip. Ailynn. In a dress that made her look as beautiful as Caity knew she was. "Glass of the special red please Caity." She leant over the bar and kissed her briefly. Kissing her back, Caity nodded and poured the drink. Handing it to her, she whispered, "If i weren't working…" the end of the sentence left unsaid. (Reply Bracken) "I am done at eleven. Then all I have to do is change and them I'm all yours for the rest of the evening. " (Reply Bracken) Smiling, Caity nodded. Since Risa, they had become closer. Closer than she ever thought imaginable. Even though they had barely said the words, the emotions were there. "So, you heading over to the starlight lounge soon?" (Reply Bracken) (USS Exeter - Nine and Dine - FO Cmdr Ailynn Bracken - 2018) "Glass of the special red please Caity." She leant over the bar and kissed her briefly. Kissing her back, Caity nodded and poured the drink. Handing it to her, she whispered, "If i weren't working…" the end of the sentence left unsaid. Ailynn raised an eyebrow, saying nothing, but the look hopefully said it all to Caity. “What time are you off?” "I am done at eleven. Then all I have to do is change and them I'm all yours for the rest of the evening. " “I look forward to it. I may have a teeny surprise for you later. In the Starlight ballroom.” Ailynn winked gently. Smiling, Caity nodded, a flush of expression on her face. "So, you heading over to the starlight lounge soon?" Nodding, Ailynn sipped at her wine. “I’m headed there in a bit. Perils of Command and all that, I need to show my face and mingle...besides, you’re busy and you don’t need me about distracting you.” She said teasingly. “I’d better head off, you’re rammed in here. Later baby.” Ailynn was sure that Caity answered her, but it was swallowed up in the noisy chatter of the bar as she left, chatting to a few people on the way out, she caught sight of Caity working the bar, Ailynn smiled gently, her heart jumping. (Reply none) (USS Exeter - Deck 9, Starlight Lounge - CO, Captain Trip Williams - 2100) Most of the recreation areas of Deck 9 had been converted for a party. The Holodecks had been activated with dancing programs, With Holodeck 1 being a grand ballroom for a traditional gala, Holodeck 2 had more of a pop music dance vibe, and Holodeck 3 was set for more of a punk rock vibe. Bean me up! was set up with coffee to go for anyone feeling drained, Nine and Dine was set up for anyone who wanted a more substantial bite to eat, whereas the Starlight Lounge was set up for a reception with light hors d'oeuvres, and plenty of fancy drinks. Trip stood in the middle of the Starlight Lounge as people began trickling in. He was wearing a Black suit, with a red button down shirt, and a black tie. He was going with a retro 21st century vibe. He had a bourbon in his left hand and grabbed a mini quiche from one of the waitresses. He hoped that his crew had enjoyed their R&R and hoped that they could enjoy this new years eve party together. All of the crew were off, though I guess the civilian waiters and chefs were not, with emergency holograms in place for those areas where there were critical systems that needed monitoring. As he enjoyed his mini quiche he looked around. He had been captain of the Exeter for four months, four exciting months, and has he took a sip from his bourbon, he smiled, glad to enjoy this moment of respite with his Exeter family. (Reply any) (USS Exeter - Deck 9, Starlight Lounge -aACMO Ensign SG Heinrich Kruze - 2102) Heinrich’s first days of active duty were not anything he was told to expect. Within three days he was being beamed into the holodeck as part of a rescue team and was tasked with saving a young woman’s life. Then the captain gave the crew shore leave on Risa, but that only gave Heinrich the opportunity to get into trouble. So far it had not been the relaxing vacation he had been promised. His hope was this party would be a chance to let loose and unwind. Heinrich was far from the life of the party. He preferred to remain on its edges, only journeying to the dance floor from time to time. Of all the places to go the Starlight Lounge seemed the most appropriate. He could get a cocktail, sit down, and have a light conversation. He wasn’t looking for much else. He saw that the lounge was already beginning to fill up. He walked over to the bar and leaned on the counter. “Good evening sir, what can I do for you?” The barkeep asked. “I would like a gin and tonic.” Heinrich said. “Right away sir.” He went to prepare the drink. He handed it to Heinrich who thanked him for it and sipped. “My word, man. This might be the best gin and tonic I’ve ever had. What’s your secret?” “I learn from the best.” The barkeeper said. “Tell me, what’s your name?” “The name’s Ernie Lloyd, but most people call me Mac.” “Alright Mac, I’ll remember to look for you from now on.” Mac smiled, thanked Heinrich, and went about his business. Heinrich stayed at the bar surveying the room. (Reply any) (USS Exeter - Deck 9, Starlight Lounge -Nurse, Ensign SG Violet Drake- 2104) "Bambi!" Violet said as he approached the new doctor Heinrich Kruze, "How's it going?" (Reply Kruze) Violet had a relaxing time on Risa, spending most of her time poolside with a good book and a margarita class that seemed to fill itself almost if by magic. Still part of her was happy to be back on the ship. As much as she liked real sunlight, real gravity, she had become used to the feel of the Exeter's artificiality. "So, did you have a good time on Risa? Any fun adventures?" (reply Kruze) (reply Kruze) (USS Exeter - Deck 9, Starlight Lounge -aACMO Ensign SG Heinrich Kruze - 2105) "Bambi!” Heinrich hated being called Bambi, but he was oddly relieved to see Violet. "How's it going?” “Oh, pretty good. Just savoring the last few hours of our vacation.” "So, did you have a good time on Risa? Any fun adventures?” Heinrich wasn’t sure how much he could say. Some of what he went through was too convoluted to tell, other elements might be incriminating. “Well, uh, you could say that.” He managed. “Spent some time poolside reading a good book. Had a few drinks. Found an urn from the late 20th century. Returned it to its proper owners. Met some interesting people.” He couldn’t keep eye contact going down his list of half truths. Taking a sip of his gin and tonic Heinrich asked Violet, “So how was your vacation?” (Reply Drake) “Oh, I’m glad. I’m glad. Ready to get back to work?” (Reply Drake) (USS Exeter - Deck 9, Starlight Lounge -Nurse, Ensign SG Violet Drake - 2106) “So how was your vacation?” "Relaxing, wonderful, and everytime I wanted a drink, a sexy man brought it to me. I felt like a goddess." “Oh, I’m glad. I’m glad. Ready to get back to work?” "Oh hell yes." she said. "As much as I love vacation, I love my job, it gives me purpose. And honestly, it was just kinda boring, just sitting there in a bikini, reading books, in a perpetual state of intoxication while men, and I'm sure a woman or two, oggled at me. Though that part was flattering." (Reply Kruze) "So bambi, meet anyone fun on Risa?" (reply Kruze) (USS Exeter - Deck 9, Starlight Lounge -aACMO Ensign SG Heinrich Kruze - 2107) "Oh hell yes." she said. "As much as I love vacation, I love my job, it gives me purpose. Though that part was flattering.” Heinrich didn’t have to hear any of that in a professional capacity, but was glad to hear Violet had a good time. “I’m, uh, sure it was Violet.” "So bambi, meet anyone fun on Risa?” Again, Heinrich wasn’t sure how much he could say without being incriminating or really confusing. “I met a few people. Have you ever been to the Hare Lounge?” (Reply Drake) “It’s a lounge for all the lepidians on Risa. They’re large humanoid hares. I got to hang out there a little bit. It was, uh, nice.” (Reply Drake) “I also met some Terrapins. They’re large humanoid turtles. Superficially very polite, but they can have a real mean streak. Don’t care for the lepidians too much.” (Reply Drake) (USS Exeter - Deck 9, Starlight Lounge - Nurse, Ensign SG Violet Drake - 2108) “I met a few people. Have you ever been to the Hare Lounge?” "The Hair Lounge? Sounds odd." “It’s a lounge for all the lepidians on Risa. They’re large humanoid hares. I got to hang out there a little bit. Superficially very polite, but they can have a real mean streak. Don’t care for the lepidians too much.” "Why does all of this sound like some sort of fable. You know the one, the tortoise and the hare. And the tortoise was slow as can be. But the hare in his hubris took a nap and lost." (reply Kruze) "So, Bambi, what are you, a tortoise or a hare? Are you gonna let your hubris get the best of you or stay slow and steady?" (reply Kruze) Violet smiled, "Keep pondering that one Bambi, but for now I'm gonna go do some dancing. I will see you later." She patted him on the back and that headed out the door. (reply Kruze) (USS Exeter - Deck 9, Starlight Lounge -aACMO Ensign SG Heinrich Kruze - 2109) "Why does all of this sound like some sort of fable. You know the one, the tortoise and the hare. And the tortoise was slow as can be. But the hare in his hubris took a nap and lost.” Heinrich paused for a moment. He hadn’t really put the two together. “You know, I was told their tensions began because the lepidians lost a race. Maybe that old fable has some basis of reality, or reality has some basis in that old fable.” "So, Bambi, what are you, a tortoise or a hare? Are you gonna let your hubris get the best of you or stay slow and steady?” Heinrich laughed, “When have I ever been the fast type? I can’t run much on this bum knee.” He said patting his knee. “I bet you could run circles around me. But then again…” "Keep pondering that one Bambi, but for now I'm gonna go do some dancing. I will see you later.” Nurse Drake gave Heinrich a pat on the back and walked out the door. Heinrich sighed and returned to his drink, pondering his hubris. (Reply none) (USS Exeter - Deck 9, Holodeck 3- CTO/3O Lieutenant commander Ravok - 2110) Ravok decided to skip the glitz and glam of the starlight lounge, the upbeat and bubbly pop vibe of holodeck 2 and the uptight feel of holodeck 1. He instead chose holodeck 3 where a band was playing rock music. The program had a perfect recreation of a bar, most of the tactical department were there enjoying the performance. Ravok however was finding his enjoyment one shot of vodka at a time. Keira would be joining him at some point and Rayna was safe in their quarters sleeping with the holographic Nanny program keeping a watchful eye. His left shoulder was still sore from the competition of the previous day, but besides that he was otherwise fine. He watched as people danced and moved to the music being played. Ravok began remembering times on mars when members of the fighter wing and himself would go to the Canton bar. He remembered times when Trip would make the venture there. Everyone loved it when good old Trip Williams made an appearance. He also remembered how different everyone acted around the former fighter wing commanding officer. They would become tense and sometimes on edge hoping to not disappoint him. Ravok heard the whispers. Certain members of the fighter wing also acted differently around Ravok as well because he was Trip's right hand and always kept him informed. ~ Not anymore~ Ravok thought while looking at everyone dancing and smiling. Ravok was overcome with a feeling of disgust. ~ Less than a month ago the ship was on edge. People were dying and now they dance carelessly. Nothing but a bunch of fools. Go ahead and dance now...~ He thought , grabbing the bottle and pouring himself another shot. He held up his glass, raising it to no one and smiled. " Fvoir hwiiy payr ." He laughed and downed his shot. (USS Exeter- Starlight lounge - COO LTjg Paul Sleeford 21:10) Sleeford walked arm in arm with Katie, smiling slightly as some of the crew turned into owls, trying to follow the couple as they made their way to the Starlight lounge. Passing one of the holodeck, the noise from within was deafening, glancing in as he passed Sleeford saw most of the Tactical and Security department in there. Laughing he knew that a few months ago he’d have been amongst them throwing as many weird moves as they were shaking. Walking into the Starlight lounge, Sleeford saw the captain and first officer standing in the centre of the room, away in the corner he saw Stan hiding behind the plants, walking across he stopped and smiled at the pair. “Captain, Commander. Good evening.” (Williams / Bracken reply) “Commander if I may, you look delightful tonight” (Reply Bracken) “My congratulations to Mrs Williams, sir, she’s down a fantastic job tonight” (Reply Williams) “Oh and why is Stan hiding behind the plants?” (Reply any) Spying a passing waitress, Sleeford turned to Katie, “Can I get you a drink?” (Reply Jamison) walking over Sleeford took two glasses and waked back. Handing Katie her glass. (Reply Williams, Bracken, Jamison) ( reply none) (USS Exeter - Deck 9, Starlight Lounge - CSO Lt Erin Cortez - 2111) Standing outside the door to the starlight lounge, Erin took a breath. The events of the last 36 hours were still weighing heavily on her but she knew that, at least for her department and for herself, she had to make an appearance. All she wanted to do was hide away and try and figure out what had happened but she knew that was not the best thing for her right now. Smoothing down her bronze silk dress, she stepped through the door with a smile on her face. Taking a glass of champagne from one of the waiters, she smiled a thankyou to him and took a look around. The room looked amazing and lifted her mood some but her mind was still reeling from the conversation with Jimmy. Spotting Captain Williams, she walked over to him, “Good evening Captain.” (Reply Trip) “Your wife has done an amazing job here.” (Reply Trip) (Reply Trip, Any) (USS Exeter - Deck 9, Starlight Lounge - SO Ens.(SG ) Stan More - 21:12) His fingers were still trembling as he hid behind the corner. Watching his department head enter the Starlight lounge. After what had happened yesterday. He had been in two minds coming today. But why should he hide? After all hadn’t Stan warned them? It was not his fault. Just same it may be prudent to keep his distance from her for now. So once he entered Stan made for a large potted plant to hide behind. Once Erin had moved away from the Captain. Stan came out of his hiding place. “ Greetings Captain. How are you and how is yer lady wife?” Stan asked. ( Reply , Will ) (USS Exeter - Deck 9, Starlight Lounge - CO, Trip Williams and CSO Lt Erin Cortez - 2114) Trip turned as he was approached by Erin Cortez. Whatever she was going to say to him, he knew one topic to avoid, his cousin Jimmy. Trip was a little bit peeved about how immature she had been with him. Yes Jimmy forgot about a dinner she invited him over for, but in Jimmy’s defense, Jimmy had never committed to going, only that he’d try. If there was one thing that Trip knew, it was that Jimmy was an honest man, and if Jimmy said that he forgot about the dinner and when he called to apologize, Erin ghosted him, and then when he called again the next day, Erin didn’t answer, then Trip believed him. If nothing else, Trip knew he would advise all his cousins to avoid dating Erin in the future. On the plus side, no matter how Erin may be in relationships, and how she may have treated Billy and Jimmy, one thing was certain, when it came to her job she was a consummate professional. “Good evening Captain.” “Good evening Lieutenant.” Trip said with a smile in reply. “Your wife has done an amazing job here.” “That she has, she is full of surprises and really knows how to throw a party. I mean she worked logistics on Mars, she knows her stuff.” "She has out done herself here." Erin said with a smile as she took a drink of her champagne. She knew that probably the cousins had talked but how much of what had been said between her and Jimmy remained a mystery and she was not about to bring it up. After all, her boss was his cousin and she did not want to put him I the position of having to listen to her moan on about how he was still in love with his ex. “Honestly, if she keeps this up, I might have to leave my command to move with her to some big fancy event planning job somewhere in the Galaxy.” Trip said with a laugh. Erin laughed, "would be less stressful than managing us I bet." “So tell me, how’d the scavenger hunt go?” Glancing over her shoulder, she was aware that Ensign More was nearby. "Oh it was… educational… definitely interesting. As far as I know we may have gotten one of the prizes at least." “You mean, they haven’t told you if you have or not?” "Not yet. It may be something and nothing. But all I can do is wait." “My guess Lieutenant, is if you haven’t heard by now, you didn’t win a thing, just my experience. But I hope I’m wrong.” "Me too. Would be a nice confidence boost. But the team performed very well together. Both Ensigns More and Michaels did their jobs to the best of their abilities. " “How is Ensign More acclimating?” "Very well. He seems settled. Very eager to please but he is settling in well." Trip nodded. "Infact, I think that's him over there hiding behind the plant." ~Great~ Trip thought to himself. “Sometimes he reminds me of a puppy. In a good way, eager to please, but sometimes too over eager. And not the least bit subtle.” Erin smiled softly, "I can understand that. Forgive me, Sir, I think he wants a minute of your time. I'll step away. Have a good evening sir and my warmest congratulations to yourself and your wife." “Go enjoy yourself.” Erin nodded and walked away, heading towards the bar. Trip turned to Stan as he was approaching. “ Greetings Captain. How are you and how is yer lady wife?” Stan asked. “I’m good and so is she, I think. Honestly I’ve kind of lost track of where she is in this sea of activity.” (Reply Stan) “So tell me Ensign, how are you doing? Ready to ring in the new year?” (reply Stan) (Reply Stan) (USS Exeter - Deck 9, Starlight Lounge - SO.Ens.(Sg) Stan More - 21:15 ) Stan wondered if Erin had told Trip about the incident in the tunnel. Well he would know soon. “I’m good and so is she, I think. Honestly I’ve kind of lost track of where she is in this sea of activity.” “ Well that is good to hear sir. Good to hear.” Stan said. “So tell me Ensign, how are you doing? Ready to ring in the new year?” What should he say? I got high on undetectable spores and laughed so much. My lungs nearly bled? No best to tell the truth just a bit. But not fully. “ It’s absolutely great sir. We have the best team of scientist in the fleet. Erin is a very good department head.” Stan said. ( Reply , Trip ) (USS Exeter- Adala’s Quarters- ACTO, Lt. He was gonna make his way to the party, but he wasn’t sure if Adala would be joining. If he had asked her to parachute over an active volcano, she’d be the first one out the door, but trying to get her to a large social function, could at times, be like asking a Ferengi to give you something for free. As the door opened he smiled. “So you coming, New Year’s Eve parties only happen once a year.” Adala laughed as she stepped back so he could step inside. “Yes I’m coming. I don’t dress like this for just anyone. Besides, I wouldn’t say no to spending the evening with the most handsome man in starfleet.” NRPG: Link to the gown she’s wearing: https://www.jovani.com/image/catalog/evening-dresses/02169-OFFWHITE-2.jpg RPG: “Wait, so you’re gonna hang out with the Captain instead of me?” Adala laughed. “No I do not want to hang out with the Captain. You are a lot more fun.” Cade laughed. “Seriously thanks for braving the party. I know you’d rather be off doing the night hang glide over the bay, but thanks for doing this.” Adala shook her head. “I’ve done nothing but dare devil stuff since I got here so it’s nice to have a night off and spend it with someone I care deeply for.” “And before I get in trouble, you look drop dead gorgeous.” She gave him a glance, taking in everything about him. “You my dear, are quite handsome yourself.” “I’ve been told I clean up nicely.” Adala gave him another once over. “I have to agree.” she leaned up and gave him a kiss. “So, before we head out. I hope that ship life is treating you well. I know that before joining the Exeter you had an assignment on Earth and Before that Mars, so I hope, at the very least, that the ship life doesn’t make you feel….trapped.”: She shook her head. “I find ways to keep myself from becoming ‘trapped’. I had been spending a lot of my offtime on the holodeck. But might find other ways to keep myself occupied.” She looked up into his eyes as she spoke. “Yeah, and what ways are that?” he said jokingly as the pair walked towards the turbolift. (reply Stan) (USS Exeter - Deck 9, Starlight Lounge - So Ens.(Sg) Stan More - 21:17 ) Stan was speaking with the Captain. "Well don't get too cocky Ensign. That I am very glad ya moved me to science.” Stan replied "I'm glad things are going well for you, and I hope they continue to do so." “ Ouch they will sir. This is were I belong. The Hood CO had been chosen. He would need to send her a message and a congratulations. More watched him walk away and moved to the buffet. He avoided anything with mushrooms in it. After what happened in the tunnel yesterday. His love for edible fungus had dulled a bit. He was feeling thirsty so after eating he moved towards the bar. “ Greetings ma’am” Stan said as he approached Erin. ( Reply , Erin ) (USS Exeter – Starlight Lounge – CSO Lt Erin Cortez - 2120) “ Greetings ma’am” Stan said as he approached Erin. Turning, Erin smiled, "Good evening, Stan. How are you?" (Reply More) "How's our guest doing in the biology lab?" (Reply More) "And you? After the incident in the cave… you recovered okay?" (Reply More) (USS Exeter – Starlight Lounge - SO Ens.(Sg) Stan More - 21:22 ) Stan was not sure what to say, about yesterday. The dust in the tunnel had some kind of natural element. The masked the moss mushrooms hallucinogenic spores. That had made Stan and Erin high. Turning, Erin smiled, "Good evening, Stan. How are you?" “ Well my lungs have stopped hurting after all that laughing. Plus I no longer see wee over sized headed doggies. Apparently there was a natural element in the air that hid the spore dust from our sensors. The rock fall that killed the wee bairns parents must of disturbed the moss mushrooms.Causing them to expel their spores into the air.” Stan explained "How's our guest doing in the biology lab?" “ Sad. He has lost everything he knew. From what I have read up on feather monkeys. Once a wee one loses its parents. Their basically killed by the other males of the group. Barbaric but that’s how it goes.” Stan said sadly. "And you? After the incident in the cave… you recovered okay?" “ As I said not to bad now. But just the same someone should have a wee talk. With the Risan authorities about perhaps warning others. About the moss mushroom spores and there unique attributes.” Stan replied ( Reply , None ) (USS Exeter – Starlight Lounge – CSO Lt Erin Cortez and Ernie Lloyd - 2127) Sitting at the bar, Erin stirred her drink and sighed. As much as she knew she had to be there, she would have been happier just hiding away. The whole situation with Jimmy had gotten to her more than she had let on. Her mind kept replaying the conversation, wondering if there was anything she could have said or not said. “Is something wrong, ma’am?” The bartender asked. He was a tall man, bespeckled and sharply dressed. His manner was professional but his smile was friendly and gentle. “I couldn’t help but notice you’ve barely touched your drink.” "Wrong? Not with the drunk, no." Erin said, smiling sadly. "Just me." The bartender leaned down on the counter. “Anything you need to talk about?” "I could but I would only depress you." Erin said, truthfully as she sipped her drink. "This is a good martini though." “Well thank you, I’ve learned from the best.” He said, “I’ve been a bartender much of my life. There are three things you need to learn to be a good bartender. One is how to mix a cocktail. And two is how to listen when someone’s drowning their sorrows.” "What's the third? You said there was three?" Erin asked as she finished her drink and ate the olive. “Oh, three? Know when to ask for the money.” He said with a grin. “It’s a living.” "Certainly is. You don't want to listen to my woes. I'm not sure I do half the time." “So, really, what’s going on?” "Well, let's see. I'm sat here at a party in a damn fine dress and the one man I wanted to be here is still in love with his ex and walked away from me." “Oh my, that’s terrible.” The bartender said. "Yeah it sucks." “I’m very sorry to hear that. What a horrible thing for a man to do.” "Well, part of me thinks I deserve it. Not had the best of luck since joining but, I'm happy in my job at least." “No, no, I don’t think anyone deserves that. Good riddance to bad rubbish I say!” "Thing is…. He's a really good guy. But me? I've done things… some of my own volition, others not." The bartender stood up in protest. “A really good guy!? Do really good guys stand up their girlfriends for the sake of an ex? It doesn’t sound to me like he left you for anything you did, he left you because he’s a dick! Uh, sorry, I got a little carried away there. I just hate to see a woman like you making a man’s fault’s your own.” "A woman like me? You don't even know me! What makes you think I am a good woman…" Erin said, sighing and handing him her empty glass. The bartender, flustered, said, “Good or bad, you don’t deserve what happened. You even said, he left you for an old crush, not because of anything you did, right? Anyway, want another drink?” "Are tribbles born pregnant?" She replied with a smile. "Dealers choice." “How about we go with an old fashioned manhattan?” "Sounds good." The bartender left to prepare the cocktail. He made a huge show effortlessly finding his way around the bar and mixing everything just right. He returned with the drink. “Here you go, on the house.” "On the house? Smooth because I'm fairly sure the the captain's wife has made it all on the house." She replied, taking the drink and winking. “Drat, you got me!” The bartender said. "So, what about you? Don't even know your name." “Oh, I forgot to properly introduce myself. My name is Ernie Lloyd. Some of my friends call me Mac though. It’s an old nickname. It’s a pleasure to meet you Miss…? "Lieutenant Erin Cortez. Chief science officer at your service." “Ah! I did not realize I was in such distinguished company.” "Distinguished? Hardly. But thankyou." Erin took a sip of the drink and sighed. "This is good." “Thank you, like I said I learned from the best.” "Where do you hail from, Mac?" “Oh, uh, I’m from Colony Beta Zed…” Ernie said, with a hint of uncertainty. Frowning, Erin looked at him, "Really?" “I mean…” "Hey look, we all have a past. Mine maybe a bit more chequered than others but we have them." “Yes, yes. I was born on a colony whose… name escapes me. Since that time I’ve devoted my life to the gastronomic arts. I’m not just a bartender, you know. I’m also something of a chef.” "You have some competition. The bar manager here makes a phenomenal steak sandwich. " Ernie’s ears perked up. “You don’t say?” "Yeah. But I am sure your cooking is pretty good as well." “You know, I’ve been looking for a good steak sandwich recipe. I figure it pairs well with that Manhattan.” "That's a closely guarded secret. I doubt even her girlfriend knows." “That’s a shame. A real shame. Do you cook?” "I try. My mom used to say that I could burn a salad." Erin thought for a second as she looked at him. Ernie laughed, “that bad, huh?” "Yeah. Never got the chance to learn." “You’re putting me on.” "I can assure you I'm not. I can do basic things but nothing complicated. " “But it’s all about the little things!” Ernie was getting animated, losing himself in his love of cooking. “When you interview for a chef’s job at a fancy restaurant do you think they ask you to make a soufflé? No! They want to see you make scrambled eggs. If you master the small things, the details, you can get away with the rest. Without the small things, it doesn’t matter how well you follow complicated instructions.” Ernie caught himself waving his arms. “Oh, sorry for the rant, got a little carried away there.” Erin smiled, "It's fine honestly. First time I've smiled in a day. Thankyou." She paused for a moment. "Hey, an idea…. No, forget it. " “No, what? What’s the idea?” "Do you think you could teach me to cook? I know I could ask your boss… she is dating my best friend but she's so busy…." Erin’s voice tailed off. Ernie grinned. “Oh, I’d be happy too. I love nothing more than the culinary arts.” “HEY MAC!” A man yelled from down the counter. “Looks like I gotta get back to it. What works for you? I work nights.” "I'm the boss. Whenever is good for you." She winked. "Just get in touch and we can arrange it. I should get back to the party." “I’ll get in touch. See you Lieutenant Cortez.” "Thanks Mac." Erin replied, nodded and headed back into the throng of the party. He would move onto something stronger later when he meet up with the others at the Starlight Lounge a little bit later. “Hay Ire?” He turned to see Souliz walking over to him. She was wearing a figure-hugging gold floor length dress which flowed around her as she walked. Which contrasted against her midnight black skin, as well as her gold face markings and piercing blue eyes. “Hallo Souliz what are you doing here?” Souliz smiled as she sat down in the chair beside him. He had met her when he, Ravok and Merek had returned to Risa. He had taken the opportunity to go down to the planet to see it for a little bit before they would leave. He had met her at one of the bars overlooking the ocean as the sun was setting. She had been one of the participants in the archaeology conference that had been going on over the time that the Exeter had been on orbit. “I heard that you were having a new year’s party on board and asked if I could attend.” “But you don’t celebrate New Year?” She gave him a smile. “That is true. As a Fetarthen we don’t use the same date cycle as you but it’s an excuse for a party so how could I resist.” Ire nodded. “Yes, we do have good parties on the Exeter.” She looked around the quiet room before looking back at Ire. “So, you are not it in the party mood? “Just pacing myself. Its not good to get drunk in front of the Captain.” She grinned. “No that would not be good. A vaulted Starfleet officer being bladdered would not look good.” “No, it would not but don’t let it stop you by any means.” “Ow that’s very kind of you. Are you implying that I cannot hold my alcohol?” “Well last night?” She gave him a scathing look. “Our memories of last night vastly different. I distinctly remember one of us needing help back to their quarters.” He grinned back. “Yes, one of us did.” She rolled her eyes but there was a slight smile on her lips. “Any way. Are you going to show where a girl can get a drink or dose she have to find one herself?” Ire nodded as she finished his tea and stood indicating the door at the far side of the room. “Of course, where are my manners. This way.” Souliz stood and followed him as he headed towards the door. Looking up she seen that the room had been done up before realising that it was indeed the end of the year. Giving her head a small shake at her own lack of awareness on the date she moved over to a replicator, “Water – cold – with ice.” The glass appeared and the ice jingled off the sides as she removed it and took a refreshing sip before moving off to the side out of anyone else’s way. There, by the replicator was a short human woman with auburn hair who looked like she just finished a workout. She was drinking what looked to be water, or vodka, and was one of a few people in the lounge not talking to anyone. Heinrich walked up to Janice nonchalantly and tried to start a conversation. “Hello, ma’am, I’m Dr. Heinrich Kruze. What’s your name?” Heinrich asked. (Reply Janice) (USS Exeter – Starlight Lounge – ACEO Lieutenant Janice Hammerfield– 2147) “Hello, ma’am, I’m Dr. Heinrich Kruze. What’s your name?” Heinrich asked. Janice looked up half way through taking sip of water and quickly swallowed it, “mmm.. Evenin’ doc – Janice Hammerfield. Engineering. Don’t think i’ve seen you about in my travels?” (Reply Kruze) “Must just be the shift patterns work in. You here for the rest of the night? I hate to admit but I completely forgot what day it was otherwise I might have worn something more appropriate,” she nodded over to some of the other crew mingling in far more elaborate outfits that she even owned. “Oh... where are my manors – did you want something?” she pointed her thumb over her shoulder to the replicator and sidestepped to put it in view. (Reply Kruze) (USS Exeter - Deck 9, Starlight Lounge -aACMO Ensign SG Heinrich Kruze - 2148) “mmm.. Evenin’ doc – Janice Hammerfield. Engineering. Don’t think i’ve seen you about in my travels?” Heinrich smiled slightly. “I just came on board maybe a month ago.” “Must just be the shift patterns work in. You here for the rest of the night? I hate to admit but I completely forgot what day it was otherwise I might have worn something more appropriate, Oh... where are my manors – did you want something?” “I’m fine for now, thanks.” Heinrich said. "I’ve been working nights, so I suppose we wouldn’t have crossed paths. I get how you can forget what day it is on this ship.” Truth be told the two greatest adjustments Heinrich had to starfleet life was finding his away around the starship, and remembering what day or time it is. (Reply Hammerfield) “Have you enjoyed your shore leave?” (Reply Hammerfield) (USS Exeter – Starlight Lounge – ACEO Lieutenant Janice Hammerfield– 2149) “I’m fine for now, thanks.” Heinrich said. "I’ve been working nights, so I suppose we wouldn’t have crossed paths. I get how you can forget what day it is on this ship.” Truth be told the two greatest adjustments Heinrich had to starfleet life was finding his away around the starship, and remembering what day or time it is. “Tell me about it!” she nodded twisting back, “Sometimes I just wish the windows didn’t show space,” “Have you enjoyed your shore leave?” “Seen the tech expo planet side that was interesting – but to be honest when everyone is away its probably the easiest time to get work done. You don’t need to worry so much about working around people and their schedules or worrying about a department needing resources,” (Reply Kruze) “Have you been enjoying your leave?” Janice enquired back, “Are you sticking around for the rest of the night?” (Reply Kruze) (USS Exeter - Deck 9, Starlight Lounge -aACMO Ensign SG Heinrich Kruze - 2150) “Seen the tech expo planet side that was interesting – but to be honest when everyone is away its probably the easiest time to get work done. You don’t need to worry so much about working around people and their schedules or worrying about a department needing resources.” Suddenly Heinrich felt guilty that he did not, in fact, take advantage of shore leave to brush up on his reading or to get paperwork done. “That’s true, it’s a great opportunity to make up for lost time.” “Have you been enjoying your leave?” Janice enquired back, “Are you sticking around for the rest of the night?” Heinrich was still not sure how much he could say about his experience on Risa. “It’s been wonderful. The sun, the free time. Found an urn, that was fun. But now I’m taking full advantage of this party before it’s time to get back to work.” (Reply Hammerfield) (USS Exeter – Starlight Lounge – ACEO Lieutenant Janice Hammerfield– 2151) Heinrich was still not sure how much he could say about his experience on Risa. “It’s been wonderful. The sun, the free time. Found an urn, that was fun. But now I’m taking full advantage of this party before it’s time to get back to work.” Raising her eyebrow a bit she looked at him, “An urn? Not the usual type of thing just to randomly find kicking about. Did they let you bring it back or did you have to hand it in?” (reply Kruze) Janice nodded in reply, “Usually when I find something its a piece of tech someone has left lying about or something small and of such inconsequential value its hardly worth doing anything with.” Looking into the crowd gathering she placed her glass on a nearby table, “I’m not really one for events like this. Large gatherings tend to make me feel more on edge rather than at ease.” (reply Kruze) (USS Exeter - Deck 9, Starlight Lounge -aACMO Ensign SG Heinrich Kruze - 2152) When Janice raised her eyebrow Heinrich was worried he had piqued too much curiosity. “An urn? Not the usual type of thing just to randomly find kicking about. Did they let you bring it back or did you have to hand it in?” “Oh, no.” Heinrich said scratching the back of his head. “I had to find its proper owner and return it.” Janice nodded in reply, “Usually when I find something its a piece of tech someone has left lying about or something small and of such inconsequential value its hardly worth doing anything with.” ~Yes, inconsequential.~ Heinrich thought to himself, glad that the conversation was moving on. “I’m not really one for events like this. Large gatherings tend to make me feel more on edge rather than at ease.” Heinrich nodded. “Not the easiest for me either. I find a little alcohol helps with that.” He raised his glass. “But that’s why I’m here in the starlight lounge and not on the holodecks. All that noise. Just too much.” (Reply Hammerfield) “Well it was a pleasure speaking to you Ms. Hammerfield. I’d say I hope to see you around but, as a doctor…” He trailed off. (Reply Hammerfield) (USS Exeter – Starlight Lounge – ACEO Lieutenant Janice Hammerfield– 2153) Heinrich nodded. “Not the easiest for me either. I find a little alcohol helps with that.” He raised his glass. “But that’s why I’m here in the starlight lounge and not on the holodecks. All that noise. Just too much.” "Indeed – I know the feeling. Sometimes your just want to relax a bit away from it all but still enjoy it. It makes a difference not being here to pull cheese out of the replicators... again...” she let out a little sigh, “Anyway she picked up her drink off the table and tapped it against his, “Have a happy new year doc.” “Well it was a pleasure speaking to you Ms. Hammerfield. I’d say I hope to see you around but, as a doctor…” He trailed off. "Ill drink to that,” she gave him a smile as he walked off and she took a seat in by one of the windows to look towards the planet and drink her water. (Reply Any) (USS Exeter - Deck 9, Starlight Lounge – Nurse – Ewan McDonald- 2156) He had got off late from his shift but he new that he had time to get ready. His smiled widened as the doors to the Starlight Lounge opened and he stepped in. He was wearing clothes befitting is Scottish heritage. White shirt with a black jacket, along with a kilt in McDonald Tartan and a sporran along with his knee-high socks and black formal shoes. He walked across the crowded room as he headed towards the bar. His mind was calculating how many shots of whiskey he would be able to have so that he was not too drunk to sing the rendition of "Auld Lang Syne" at midnight. He would have to get the help of his countrymen and woman among the crew. If he could find them. He joined the que to the bar as he began to look at what drinks were available. (Reply any) (USS Exeter – Starlight Lounge – 2O/CEO – Lt. Cmdr. Keira Merek – 2157) It took Keira a while to get ready. So she had told Ravok to go on ahead with out her, and that she would be along. In truth it was one way to take her time to get ready and for her to show up in something that he hadn’t seen her in yet. Lathuel had told her that she looked good in black, so that’s what she chose. A black sequined evening gown, strapless form-fitting up top with room to move below the waist, in case there is dancing later. She had her hair down but pulled back, leaving her pointed ears on display. She was wearing matching heels, it had taken some getting used to walking in them, but she managed very well for how little she wore them. Her combadge was affixed to her waist. Etiquette suggested that Keira and Ravok as Senior Officers make an attempt to greet people at this event so Keira assumed he would be in the Starlight lounge, as he didn’t say where he was going, just that he was going. Keira entered the lounge and grabbed an offered drink off a server’s tray and made her way through the lounge in an attempt to mingle while she looked for her boyfriend. (Reply any) (USS Exeter–Deck 9, Office of theDir. R&SE- CO, Captain Trip Williams and Dir. R&SE Ash Williams- 22:00) “Knock, Knock,” Trip said as he stood outside the office door hoping Ash would be there. He hadn’t seen her in the Starlight lounge or the Nine and Dine, and he was hoping that he would find her in her office. “We hiding away from our moment of victory?” Ashlyn smiled deeply. “It’s going so well, I am happier that you can…” she beamed, burying herself into Trip’s embrace. “Then why are we hiding you silly goose.” Trip said with a laugh. “Is your being up this late good for the baby?” She regarded her husband gently and pulled him to an embrace , she rested on her desk her legs either side of his. “It’s fine, he’ll settle. I’m happy. I just…” “You just? Does that make me unjust?” She giggled. “Horribly…” she kissed him. “Horribly…” she kissed him again. “Unjust, an pray thee my knight defend thee mine honour as though t’were thine own.” Ash’s eyes twinkled. Trip placed his hand on her belly. "Milady it seems someone has already claimed thine honor. What would your husband say?" Ashlyn smiled. “A foul knave who played sourcerous tricks upon this maiden fair, pray thee…” Ashlyn’s eyes twinkled in her moment. “Mayhaps it twas thyself that claimst mine honour.” "And I'd do it again too. But maybe later." Trip winked. "You're a bit revved up tonight. More than usual." Ashlyn smiled, wrapping her arms around her husbands neck. “I’m happy. That’s all. I have pulled off the biggest New Years Party this side of who knows where, and It was me...all me.” "I'm sure you had some help." Trip laughed. "But I'm very proud of you." “I did, to be fair. Ideas all that came from the service crew themselves. All the areas, all the dance zones, the themes, it was all them. All I did was find room for all their headspace” "Logistics. You're specialty." “Finding space for people’s space. Pretty much.” "So why aren't you out there bathing in compliments?" Ashlyn smiled. “Just finishing off.” "I see." “Why aren’t you out there? Mr Williams?” "Because I was looking for my date." “Sorry, I’m done, I’m all yours.” she smiled, sliding gently off the desk, and linking her arm around his. “I get it though, the need to want to retreat. To let everyone have fun without you being in the spotlight. When you’re out there, my dear, you are the bell of the ball. And everyone is raving about how good of a job you did. I can imagine you wanting a bit of peace and quiet.” Ashlyn smiled. “Just closing the book on the year.” She smiled. “I wasn’t hiding exactly. I was just staying about until the upcoming shift change now that the rush has passed. We can mingle...I could do with a drink.” Ashlyn said with a gentle smile. "You need to wait A bit longer for that one" Trip laughed. “Four months.” Ashlyn sighed “When we boarded we’d only just found out I was pregnant, and now.” she motioned to her expanding waistline in the clingy white dress that she was wearing.” "Now you're the most beautiful pregnant woman on board." “Not a wide field Williams.” she chuckled, hugging her husbands arm. "Of course as far as we know you're the only pregnant woman on board." She smiled. “You’d know of course, Fleet-wise.” she held his hand as they left the office. “Did Ailynn tell you she was thinking of playing this evening?” “I haven’t spoken to her about that. We spoke briefly, but I’ve given her space. Honestly, I think she took the whole stuff with the Hood a bit hard. I feel bad, she just, what is the word Dale always uses, she just had a bit of a wobble.” “Yeah, mum has a way with those. I know what you mean.” she sighed. “I know that she’ll come round, and settle again, and I know that she’s surrounded by people that love her. I just wish that she and my sister could get on better, it upsets both of them I know, but Aimee’s an Alpha Female, and Ailynn; well enough said. It’s upsetting sometimes.” “It’s why I didn’t go into engineering. It’s why my dad didn’t want me to go into engineering. I get it. Ailynn is following the path Aimee paved, and paved it all the way to the top. They share a name, a talent. I think Aimee, wanted Ailynn to follow that path, because it’s safe, and she’s good. But Ailynn has a different path, she wants to escape that shadow, and therein lies the conflict. Is she just doing the command stuff to piss her mom off? Things like that.” Ash nodded. “Yes I think you’re right. I think Ailynn wanted to follow it, to prove that she could, but now, she feels something, a bigger role that her psyche can expand into.” “My two cents. As much as I wanted her to stay, I think she should have taken the Hood. Not if she’s wobbly of course. But I don't think it is a phase. I think it is her calling.” “It is. Perhaps a little soon for what she feels the calling toward.” “True, but I guess I’m more of a leap before you look kinda guy. But then again. She and I are very different people.” “Ailynn thinks very differently to you. Far far more tactical. Food for thought. Shall we?” “Food for thought, or food for you.” he said with laugh. “So Ailynn wants to do a set? They left the office and Ashlyn took a glass of juice off a waitress, with a smile and a wink of encouragement. “Just a couple of songs, she’s been off for a while, the music centers her a bit, you remember at school? She’d step off the Cello and just pick up a guitar and play that too? I miss her like that. Anyway, How are you? Hear from your folks?” “How am I, you know that, I’m the most annoying husband there is, when I’m not busy I call you just because I’m bored.” She giggled. “And you’re always welcome to.” She leant on his shoulder, happy in the moment. “Folks are good, haven’t talked to them since Christmas. But I’ll call them tomorrow to wish them a happy new year. How about your mom and sister?” “Mom is at Napa, with a couple of bottles, a view across the valley to the city. Aimee, I chatted with briefly, but she said she was off out.” Ashlyn looked puzzled. “Which is odd. She was really dressed up, and not ‘President’s Ball’ dressed up.” “I mean, she did just move in with the boyfriend. Some sort of we’re empty nester thing. Maybe she is getting all dolled up for…” Trip winked. She laughed. “I’m not listening” “But you’re thinking.” He said laughing. “I am now you ass.” she elbowed him. “Do you still fancy me?” she changed subject. “Always.” “Then let’s go and dance, please?” She fluttered her eyelashes at him. “So, then ballroom, pop, or punk, how does my princess want to dance?” Ashlyn sighed happily, and intertwined her fingers. “Night like this? I want you close to me Trip Williams. Ballroom all the way.” She tilted her head up and kissed him delicately. “Then my lady, we shall dance the night away.” (Reply none) (USS Exeter – Starlight Lounge – 2O/CEO – Lt. Cmdr. Keira Merek 2205) Keira sipped from her drink, realizing at that moment it was Champaign. As she wandered she saw Trip step off into another room. She didn’t see Ravok anywhere. ~Time to mingle a bit.~ She looked around again, this time looking for someone to talk with. With her striking red hair and athletic attire, Lieutenant Hammerfield stuck out. Keira made her way across the lounge to the windows where the young Lieutenant was sitting. “Good evening Lieutenant, how was your work out?” Keira asked with a smile. (Reply Hammerfield, any) (USS Exeter – Starlight Lounge – ACEO Lieutenant Janice Hammerfield– 2206) “Good evening Lieutenant, how was your work out?” Keira asked with a smile. “Commander,” she nodded looking in her direction form the window, “It was good – standard drill. To be honest I kinda forgot there was anything on today otherwise I might have chosen something else to wear. A bit late for that now. I like the outfit,” Janice commented on the sequin dress Keira was wearing briefly pointing her finger towards Keira “suits you,” (Reply Keira) “I probably could go change but its more effort that its probably worth now – besides by the time I picked something I’d probably be late for my next shift,” she joked, “How has the evening been here?” (Reply Keira, any) (USS Exeter – Starlight Lounge – 2O/CEO – Lt. To be honest I kinda forgot there was anything on today otherwise I might have chosen something else to wear. A bit late for that now. I like the outfit,” Janice commented on the sequin dress Keira was wearing briefly pointing her finger towards Keira “suits you,” “Thank you,” Keira took the compliment. “Someone who’s opinion I value said that I look good in black. While his opinion is arguably biased, I’m glad to see that biased didn’t make him wrong. Can’t be as comfortable as your attire though.” “I probably could go change but its more effort that its probably worth now – besides by the time I picked something I’d probably be late for my next shift,” she joked, “How has the evening been here?” "Don’t worry about the attire,” Keira said, “the dress code is non-punitive. As for the party, I just got here myself.” (Reply Hammerfield) “Oh, I haven’t had time to tell you this in person yet. Thank you. Your and Sleeford’s attendance of the technology expo… I’ve heard nothing but good things.” Keira said. (Reply Hammerfield) “You both represented this ship well, and you deserve to hear your praise.” Keira said evenly. (Reply Hammerfield) “I’ve taken up enough of your time.” Keira said. “Enjoy your evening, and Happy New Year.” (Reply Hammerfield, any) (USS Exeter – Starlight Lounge – ACEO Lieutenant Janice Hammerfield– 2211) "Don’t worry about the attire,” Keira said, “the dress code is non-punitive. As for the party, I just got here myself.” "Good to hear you wont have me scrubbing the plasma injectors for it,” she smiled back briefly mulling what she could have chosen to wear, “Im sure whomever suggested it will appreciate it.” “Oh, I haven’t had time to tell you this in person yet. Thank you. Your and Sleeford’s attendance of the technology expo… I’ve heard nothing but good things.” Keira said. "That place was busy!” Janice arched back in her seat before retuning upright, “It was a nightmare to avoid bumping into everyone – but very enjoyable when you got to where you wanted to go. If Mister Sleeford wasn’t there I imagine I would have got bogged down by everyone tying to sell me something.” “You both represented this ship well, and you deserve to hear your praise.” Keira said evenly. “Thanks Commander – im sure some of the goodies we brought back we can look at testing and putting into use” “I’ve taken up enough of your time.” Keira said. “Enjoy your evening, and Happy New Year.” “Take care Commander and have a happy new year and a great evening,” Janice raised her glass upwards a bit towards her as she made her exit. (Reply any) (USS Exeter - Starlight Lounge - FO Cmdr Ailynn Bracken - 2240) Ailynn stepped up onto the stage and greeted the small band that had been playing. After a few moments conversation took the guitar off the lead singer. She pulled up a stool that she rested on, and turned the microphone slightly, laughing dismissively. “Yes I know...however it’s an open mic session so you're stuck with me for a couple of songs.” It had been a while since she’d done this on stage, she played either her cello or the guitar reasonably frequently, but on stage in front of people it had been a while. Not one to let stagefright bother her she ploughed on. “A couple of oldies from me.” She turned and nodded to the band. She began plucking the strings, whereas the guitar wasn’t her best instrument, she was reasonably adept. The backing came in behind her and after a couple of bars introduction she began singing, in her warm mezzo-soprano, though restrained due to the song choice. “No one knows what it’s like, to be the bad man, to be the sad man, behind blue eyes. No one knows what it’s like to be hated, to be fated, to telling only lies. But my dreams they aren’t as empty, as my conscience seems to be…” The song went on, Ailynn herself had know idea what the song was originally about, but to herself at the moment it spoke to her, and had been on her mind for a while. Her dreams had been haunted for a while now, and though her conscience was far from empty, the feeling that the song evoked had spoken to her. As it drew to a close, she saw that Caity had come into the lounge, looking amazing. On a whim, she turned to the band again and whispered. They nodded and made ready. She altered a couple of the settings on the amplifier, and played a few notes, making sure that the sound was right. “Last one from me I promise. Let’s romance the mood up a bit.” She played the first bars of another song that had been on her mind a while, but looked across the floor as she began to sing, smiling gently as she lifted her voice and relaxed into the song, enjoying herself immensely. “Something in the way she moves, attracts me like no other lover.” The song was slow, and gentle, but backed up by a richness in the guitar. She watched as some people danced, others continued chatting, but happy in herself she continued playing, and singing, trading glances with many in the audience, but one in particular. “Somewhere in her smile, she knows…” Drawing the song to a close, Ailynn sighed happily, the nervous energy dissipated into calm happiness. She handed the guitar back, and stepped off the stage, picking up her glass and sipping her wine. (Reply DuBois, any) (USS Exeter - Starlight Lounge - ACFO, Lt. JG Ronnie Winters - 2243) Ronnie walked up to her cousin as she walked off the stage. "Always with the classics huh? Behind blue eyes?" (reply Bracken) "I hear it's one of my grampa's favorites. The classic version from the WHO. Not the cover from some 21st century band named Limp Bizkit. So I've heard." (reply Bracken) "That was a pretty good set. When was the last time you played?" She said smiling and giggly. Ronnie was very well energized by the combination of a monster energy drink and vodka. She was close to being bouncing of the walls happy. (Reply Bracken) "Have you seen Gabe around? I lost him 20 minutes ago at the ice cream station." (reply Bracken) (USS Exeter - Starlight Lounge - FO Cmdr Ailynn Bracken - 2244) Ronnie walked up to her cousin as she walked off the stage. "Always with the classics huh? Behind blue eyes?" “Hey Ronnie,” she smiled. “Yeah, always liked those kind of tunes, classics for a reason.” she replied gently. "I hear it's one of my grampa's favorites. The classic version from the WHO. Not the cover from some 21st century band named Limp Bizkit. So I've heard." “I don’t know it, bit of a purist perhaps. I’d forgotten that your grandpa liked it. I remember that it used to play on a memory card in an old car that they had on the ranch. ” She sipped at her drink again, happy in her little world. "That was a pretty good set. When was the last time you played?" She said smiling and giggly. “Played for an audience, not for ages, though when it’s just me and a glass of wine in the evening, couple of times a week maybe..” She half smiled, "Have you seen Gabe around? I lost him 20 minutes ago at the ice cream station." Ailynn shook her head, “not seen him sweetie. I’ve been up here for maybe fifteen minutes. He’s probably wandering around looking for you holding two rapidly melting icecreams.” she giggled. (Reply Ronnie IYW) “Ice Cream?” Ravok entered the conversation halfway through. Which confused Ailynn utterly. “Say what now?” " Sorry I can hear half the conversations in the room. Good evening Lieutenant , good evening Commander. You did a great job up there." “Thank you, and ‘Ailynn’ will be fine, we’re off duty.” she smiled, sipping her wine, it really was rather good. “I couldn’t play the Cello in this dress, it’d end up being a whole different kind of show.” She giggled. “But I’m happy you enjoyed it. How are you doing? How’s Kiera?” (Reply Ravok, DuBois (from previous post)) (USS Exeter - Starlight Lounge - CTO/3O Lieutenant commander Ravok - 2245) Watching Bracken's performance come to an end. Ravok let out a loud " HELL YEAH WOOO" and held his hand up for a high five to bolian male next to him. The Bolian officer looked at him with confusion. " I can keep it here all day." Ravok said with a laugh " I'm sorry Sir , but we don't do whatever that is ." The bolian responded. Ravok looked to the woman beside the bolian. " Come on sista don't leave me hanging." He said and she high fived him. " That's what I'm talking about." He said to the woman and looked back to the Bolian. " That's how it's done Sir. This is a party, pull the stick out . " Ravok said ,slapping the man on his shoulder as he scurried over to a waiter and grabbed two glasses of champagne " One for me and one for me. " Ravok said, making his way over to commander Bracken. He saw and heard Ronnie talking to her. (((NRPG : mark go head and have bracken reply to ronnie first.)) Rpg: " Ice Cream ? ( reply Bracken and Ronnie) (USS Exeter - Starlight Lounge – 2O/CEO – Lt. Cmdr. Keira Merek – 2247) Merek had been searching for several minutes. Talking to various people before hearing a familiar voice. " HELL YEAH WOOO!" It was Ravok’s voice, being louder than he usually was. ~Is he drunk? Did he bring back blood wine?~ “I think that’s my cue,” Keira said to the person she was speaking with and smiled sheepishly. “Gotta go.” It took Keira a few moments to get over to where Ravok was, he seemed to be waiting for a “high five” from a Bolian, and only seconds later started to converse with Winters and Bracken. (Reply Bracken, Winters, Ravok) They seemed to be a ways into a conversation before Keira arrived. “Hey h'levreinnye {R:ND – “Love-devil”, term of endearment} I’ve, been looking for you.” Keira said pleasantly. ( reply Keira) " Well Ailynn , Lieutenant Winters and Ms. Dubois, I hope you all have a wonderful evening and a pleasant new year celebration, I have finally found my girlfriend and want to enjoy sometime with her . ( reply Caity, Ronnie , Bracken) Ravok walked away with Keira. " You know I must say you look absolutely downright , irresistibly hot tonight and those eyes are popping tonight" He said , remarking about how black made her eyes pop and kissed her cheek. He was drastically underdressed compared to everyone else. Wearing black pants, boots, a dark grey shirt and his favorite blackleather jacket. ( reply Keira) " You know everyone is here. There are several intriguing places on this ship that I can think of us escaping too." He joked, finishing one of glasses of champagne and placing it on a passing server's tray. (USS Exeter - Starlight lounge- CFO – Lieutenant – Ire Williams 22:54) “..and that is why we don’t let Philips near any un-scanned finds.” Ire grinned and was about to reply but he saw Sleeford wave at him and noticed that he was with Ravok and More. He looked over at Souliz. “I am really sorry. If you could excuse me for a moment. There is some ships business I need deal with.” Souliz nodded as she sipped her drink as he moved though the crowd towards the others. “Ok guys two reasons for the gathering, firstly I hear one of our gathered his house glory and honour at the Batleth contest. So congratulations” “ Aye. Congratulations.” Ire nodded. “He really did defeat his enemies in a very Klingon way.” “ Secondly you know on this ship it’s easier to get Latinum out of a Frengi then keep any secrets. You’ve probably heard the rumours that Katie and I are getting married. As you three are the people I’ve know the longest and consider me friends, I’d like you to be my groomsmen.” “ Lang may yer lum reek “ Ire saw Stan shaking Paul’s hand as he nodded. “Of course.” (Reply Ravok) Raising his glass he nodded to the others,” cheers “ “We haven’t settled on a date yet, although sometime in the new year, missions allowing.” “ Well my friend when yer do decide on a date. Let me know and I rustle up. The best floral displays and bouquet’s you will ever see. It will be my present to yer both.” (Reply Ravok, More. " Ravok said, Paul had definitely almost walked in on a private conversation with Keira. Sleeford had signaled others over to their location. Ravok was just about to ask what was going on but Seeford started talking. Ire and Stan were there. “Ok guys two reasons for the gathering, firstly I hear one of our own gathered his house glory and honour at the Bat'leth contest. So congratulations” “ Aye. Congratulations.” Stan said Ire nodded. “He really did defeat his enemies in a very Klingon way.” Ravok nodded his head. " Thank you ,I couldn't have done it without the best Sword bearer and Cha'dich around." Ravok said, putting his arm around Keira. ( reply Keira, iyw) “ Secondly you know on this ship it’s easier to get Latinum out of a Frengi then keep any secrets. You’ve probably heard the rumours that Katie and I are getting married. As you three are the people I’ve know the longest and consider me friends, I’d like you to be my groomsmen.” “ Lang may yer lum reek “ Stan said, Ravok tilted his head in slight confusion. He was trying to figure out if Stan was speaking an archaic earth language or was Ravok more intoxicated than he thought. “Of course.” Ire said. " Well as long as the beautiful woman beside me doesn't have any objections, I would be honored to serve in your ceremony." Ravok said, looking at Keira. ( reply Keira) " My Queen has spoken and so shall it be !!!" Ravok said loudly with a laugh. ( reply Keira iyw) Raising his glass he nodded to the others,” cheers “ " Have you selected a day ?" Ravok asked. “We haven’t settled on a date yet, although sometime in the new year, missions allowing.” “ Well my friend when yer do decide on a date. Let me know and I rustle up. The best floral displays and bouquet’s you will ever see. It will be my present to yer both.” " Yeah I think it's a good idea that you wrestle up the flowers Stan, because I don't think Ensign Jamison would be the flower gathering type." Ravok laughed " No offense Paul, I don't know her personally , but from what I know she was raised by klingons. Therefore she may lean towards a more traditional Klingon union and if that's the case. You better get your rest. " Ravok said jokingly. ( reply Sleeford and Stan) (replies Keira, Sleeford, and Stan) (Uss Exeter - Starlight lounge- COO LTjg Paul Sleeford 22:56) Katie was off in one of the corners talking with some of the nursing staff, he surmised about dresses, flowers and what ever women talked about discussing weddings, he remembered his sisters a few years ago, his father had taken him and the groom to be out to the barn and his ‘secret’ still. “ Thas no place for a man in there” Was his only comment. Smiling at the memory Paul scanned the room, finding the people he was looking for he went to the bar. Taking three glasses of malt whiskey and a glass of orange juice he made his way over to where Ravok was standing, as he went he waved over Stan and Ire. As the small group formed Paul handed out the drinks. “Ok guys two reasons for the gathering, firstly I hear one of our gathered his house glory and honour at the Batleth contest. He moved away from her and headed towards the buffet table again. He had a sudden urge for some simulated sausages on sticks. Once this craving was met he started to mingle. He smiled remembering perhaps a life time ago. When he first arrived on the Exeter being here , in a meet and greet. Not knowing anyone and feeling very far away from home. Now this ship was home and the crew his family. He moved up to Ire and was about to speak. When a someone Stan had not seen or spoken to since the incident . waved at them. Stan moved over to Sleeford shaking his hand. “Ok guys two reasons for the gathering, firstly I hear one of our gathered his house glory and honour at the Batleth contest. So congratulations” Stan saw Ravok. He had not had the chance to speak with his old friend. Since the incident and its subsequent aftermath. Including More leaving Security for Science. How did Ravok feel about that? After all Stan was going to be his go to guy. Did he feel Stan’s departure a stab in the back or was he happy for him? “ Aye. Congratulations.” Stan said (Reply Ire ) “ Secondly you know on this ship it’s easier to get Latinum out of a Frengi then keep any secrets. (Reply Ravok, Ire, ) Pail raised his glass and nodded to the them. “ Cheers “ More took a sip of this drink. Things had certainly changed since he’d first set foot on the Exeter. Paul’s path had led in a different direction from Stan’s. He was glad for his friend. “We haven’t settled on a date yet, although sometime in the new year, missions allowing.” “ Well my friend when yer do decide on a date. Let me know and I rustle up. Trip shook his head as he saw the ensign in a 007 tux order the drinks. “So many people cosplaying James Bond. So original. Bourbon, that’s a real man’s drink” He said out loud to no one in particular. “I’ll have two of those, and a beer please.” she said to the barman. “Lightweights.” She turned to the Captain. “I like a decent martini, not because of some silly 400 year old film.” She downed one of them. “It’s the delicate taste.” “Seems like you to be fancy.” “I know. I can’t help it. So respectfully Captain. First quarter year report, what are your thoughts?” She caught his look. “You remember those back at school? You’re not trying hard enough Miss Queen.” she laughed. “That kind of thing” “Quarters,” he laughed, “Then you get to high school and they decide what’s best is six week grading periods. Then you get to the academy and they’re all like forget quarters and six week grading periods. You have a mid term and a final and all sorts of other work to keep you busy.” “I remember all too well.” Addison said, downing the second martini. “I’d say that so far….everyone is performing splendidly. They’ve been through ringer, but they’ve all…..” He paused. His mind reflecting on those they had lost, Ryelle, Nix, Nesha, David, Maxine, Malachi, Jorash. “Come through it stronger.” Addison nodded. “I’m only a silly girl, and a basic waitress, but I see a lot of hope, I also see a lot of the junior crew desperate for answers, I wonder if that’s the reason that historically the senior crew was that touch older.” “Well that and the experience. There is a certain expectation that command has to keep certain things classified. Big picture stuff is told, little picture stuff oftentimes to the vest. I think it’s easier to handle with someone 10 to 20 years older than you. Harder to stomach when you went to school with the guy and he’s your age or younger.” “Absolutely.” Addison said, “I remember there was this kid at school, dressed kinda funny, I forget how now, but he was always desperate to prove himself the big person, even though he was the same age.” “I mean there are officers here, 7 to 10 years older than me, with a lot more experience, I’m sure it probably upsets them to see wonder kid in charge.” She shrugged. “Maybe, but isn’t that the point of all your testing? To separate and forgive the expression, the wheat from the chaff? The ones destined for greatness, and the also rans?” “Except, and I mean this sincerely, even though I graduated number 2 in my class, academic success, artificial tests, aren’t the best means of gauging success. Real experiences are, and unfortunately not a lot of officers got that chance with a smaller Starfleet. But everyone here is valuable to the mission.” “I’m being a bit mean of course. Every machine has a thousand cogs, and all are important.” “They’re people, not cogs. Living breathing people, not some machine or toy to be played with. It’s that stress that weighs on my mind daily. I’m not just here to make sure we do our job well. I want them to be fully fulfilled and actualized people.” “Of course, and I don’t mean anything derogatory. I only meant that everyone was important in their own way. Sure you...the Commander, the Heads of section, other senior officers are important, but those at the bottom end have no less a part to play in things.” “Yeah, I get that. But I think the analogy of cog in the machine, you sort of lose sight of the...person. I don’t want to lose that. I’ve lost too many people under my command, both here and on Mars. Not cogs, not machines, people, and it sucks, calling their families, looking their wives or husbands in the eyes. Having to watch a spouse tell a three year old that daddy isn’t coming home….” Trip paused, he needed to take a breath. “I can’t begin to understand the pain.” she said honestly. “Sorry, I just….if I look at you as people, it means I keep your lives more sacred in my heart. I still have to make the tough call. But I’m afraid once I take the cog in the machine mentality, that's it, and the hard decision, the life and death decision, won't have the same meaning, and their sacrifices will have no value. I care about every life on this ship, whether I find them annoying as hell or breath of fresh air. Because I need to value that, see you as people. If not then I should just quit.” “I got you wrong Captain. I have to admit. I have to admit, I didn’t see passed the stacked young officer, with a dream.” “What do you mean?” Addison shrugged and sipped her beer. “Certain names crop up all the time in the Fleet, high up in the Fleet time again. Yours is one of them.” Another sip of beer. “Even in Backwater, nowhere where I’m from some things carry over, I wondered if it would be a simple case of the prodigal son getting a promotion. My school friends always said that it was who you knew right? Silly girls of course.” “Got to say, nice usage of the word prodigal. Sure while it does mean spending cash with reckless abandon, it also means having or giving something on a lavish scale. You could say the privileges I had because of who I was made me a bit like that. Most just think of it as someone who goes and screws over their parents and then #@#@$ up and then comes back begging for forgiveness.” “Hey, I’m a lower decker, lower than that probably, but I have my moments.” She smiled and sipped her beer. “Is that the only thing you got wrong about me?” Addison smiled. “I don’t think so. I like it here. It feels like home” She sighed slightly. “I know everyone will be boring you with this, but Mrs W. has set the bar for next year. If it’s not presumptuous, I adore her, she’s totally amazing.” “So do I.” He said with a smile. “That’s why I married her.” “Aww. That’s really sweet.” Addison smiled and winked with a tease. “So, any new year’s resolutions? How can I help Addison Queen become the best she can be in the year to come?” “My training is coming on really well. The staff are amazing. Professionally I have all I could hope for. Om a more Private level, I’m having a lot of fun here, and hopefully will carry on doing so.” “Well that’s boring. Surely there is some goal or objective you want to complete. What are you on the hunt for?” Addison sighed and drained her drink. “I suppose continue to observe and learn, and to be the best version of me that’s possible. KInda boring I know.” “I guess boring is good. I figured you’d probably have some crazy New Year’s resolution. Guess now I’m the one who is wrong.” He said with a laugh. Addison laughed. “Oh I wish. I do like crazy, but I have no new and zany plans. Maybe restock my pants drawer, not much else.” She winked. “I may regret asking this, but do you mean, Pants as in trousers or pants as is….nevermind, forget I asked. It’s the 25th century and we still can't figure out a common english slang.” “Would you prefer Lingerie Captain?” She laughed gently. “I’m sorry I shouldn’t be mean, and I also shouldn’t take your time. I’m back on shift now.” “Addison……” he thought about what he was gonna say next, but couldn’t find the words. “Nevermind….enjoy your shift. Hopefully you get to enjoy some party before the night ends.” Addison blushed and smiled. “I will, thank you Captain. Have fun Babe.” SHe said with a smile. “I should go back to it. Happy New Year Captain, and may the new year bring all you want it to.” ~Babe?!?!~ Trip thought to himself. “Well it’s bringing me my son, so it is definitely a start.” He said with a smile. “Have a good night Ms. Queen.” “And that is a lovely thing to be hopin’ for.” Addison said gently. “He’ll be a lucky boy.” “That he will.” “Look I have to go. Happy new year.” “Same to you.” Trip said as he turned to the bar to ask for a drink. ~Why is it that everytime I talk to Addison, I feel like she is baiting me to try and make a move?~ Trip thought to himself as the bartender instinctively brought the captain a bourbon on the rocks. (Reply none) (Exeter - Animal Quarantine - ACSci Ensign Senior Grade Adala Michaels - 2300) Adala had excused her from the party. She was anxious to spend time with their newest acquisition. She'd been getting hourly updates from the staff she'd left on watch but wanted to spend time with him herself. She had made a quick trip to her quarters changing into one of her climbing outfits They had set up a holographic quarantine area for the little monkey, hoping to alleviate stress. The area now resembled the caves they had found him in, which is another reason she wanted to spend time with him. It would give her a chance to climb. She stood outside the enclosure and watched the monkey as he explored his newest home. She knew what her next move was going to be. The little guy had imprinted on her almost immediately, having been the one who had the most contact with him from the start. It was time for her to become 'mommy' to him. Adala entered the decontamination area between the lab and the chamber, the door hissing closed behind her. [a while later] Adala sat on a ledge, the monkey on her shoulder, eating from her hand. Getting him to come to her had taken quite a while. She'd had to climb around the enclosure until he grew accustomed to her being there. He eventually moved closer, curious as to what sort of 'monkey' she was. He fed for a while before curling up in her lap, She was content to spend time just sitting there. watching him. While he slept she did an inspection of his well being. taking readings on her tricorder and giving him a visual once over. "We have to think of a name for you little one." She caught the eye of a barmaid, who, seeing them, slipped over and addressed them with a gentle smile. “Captain, Commander. How can I help?” She said, her voice warmed by the smile that she wore. Ailynn turned to her and smiling happily, made her order. “Can I have one large measure of the Captain’s bourbon, two ice cubes and my preferred Irish whisky please. One for yourself of course.” Ailynn smiled as the barmaid poured their drinks and handed them over. “I’ll take mine later with your permission. To your good health Sirs.” Trip nodded. “And you yours.” Ailynn tilted her glass happily. “So...End of the year old friend.” she said passing his drink over. “Crazy four months no?” “It’s only gonna get crazier.” “You don’t want to drink to having a quiet year. You know...where we just fly places and see stuff?” “I wouldn’t mind it.” He said. She sighed. “You know. It wasn’t that long ago that we were out of the Academy fresh Ensign juniors, who thought they knew it all, and the galaxy was an adventure, and now…” she sipped the exquisite spirit. “We’re arguably amongst the most influential people in the entire fleet and I have the weirdest feeling I know less now than I did then.” “Lucky, I had a baptism by fire. Literally, I think it was our third day on Mars I was leading the Fighter wing into combat.” Trip laughed. “Wouldn’t have minded something easier.” “Yeah I remember.” She sighed. “Put some of you back together...in the hospital that I built.” She half smiled, leaning back on the bar again with both her elbows, her eyes roaming the room, reading the occupants, and knowing that all the other rooms held people all feeling the same carefree happiness, laissez faire almost. “We the only ones who are reflective? Is that our curse?” “We had parents who were reflective. We are their children. We can’t help it.” Ailynn nodded, but a reply wasn’t necessary, she shared a glance and a whole conversation happened between them. “Hey, so when the kiddo is born, I’m gonna take two weeks paternity leave. I’ll be on ship, but you will be acting CO.” She nodded, there wasn’t much to add, but she did. “I appreciate the faith. You know I’m delivering him yeah? My midwifery certification will be crossing your desk any day.” She smiled. “Aced the test in case you wondered.” “Well are you sure we can’t get an OBGYN, instead.” He laughed. “All I know is the baby is being born in sickbay, I’m not keen on the home birth.” “Charming I must say. Sickbay it is. Ash won’t have anyone but me doing it.” she drained the drink, then raised the glass indicating a refill. “Digressing slightly...about that Hood business…” “You should have taken it.” He said with a smile. “But she has a captain, Novak something. Just named.” “Aleksandre?” She asked. “Aleksandre Novak?” “Yeah, you know her?” “You remember her….Zebra pants girl. I told you about her. She was sat next to me at the conference.” “I don’t remember anyone with Zebra pants.” Ailynn shook her head gently. “It was a ladies room thing. She came out her cubicle and had her skirt tucked in her panties. Everyone else just looked and giggled, I pointed it out and we got chatting. Career Officer. Highly intelligent, got passed over a couple of times because of the state of the Admiralty as was. I liked her.” “Oh yeah,” he laughed. “Underpants.” “I can’t believe we still need a Universal Translator for variants of English.” Ailynn giggled. “She seemed nice. It’s nice that folks are finally getting there due.” “Federation has changed. The right people are in charge. Arguably the ones that should have been Admirals twenty five years ago but still. So...New years...Happy thoughts. I suspect I know what yours might be…?” “Yeah. Well right now, I have a happy thought and an unhappy one.” “Unhappy?” she said simply. It was though they were kids again. Though kids with insane levels of responsibility and hard spirits. “Empath, remember.” He said, “I know when people are into me, when they want to….get into my pants.” he said with a wink. “And there is a civilian member of the crew who I just keep getting the sense...is...nevermind. Maybe it’s just me.” “Well, can’t blame her. You’re a hunka chunka burning lurve.” she winked and teased. “Moving on to happy, kid is due in a few months.” “I can’t begin to tell you how happy that’s making Ashlyn. She thinks she can hide it from me.” Ailynn smiled gently, her mood utterly settled. “She may be a Bracken, but she can’t hide emotions like y’all.” he laughed. “What about you?” “Me? Not much to tell.” she caught sight of Caity across the room, and her heart fluttered. “You don’t have to tell. I’m an empath, remember.” She smiled, and briefly rested her head on his shoulder. “Cheater.” “Just be careful ok Lynn.” “I will. I am.” She nodded. “I don’t really know Caity, had only maybe five conversations with her. Because if I’m not eating in my room, I’m eating here to bother Ash, so I don’t really know what she’s like. But I read body language. I know you both love each other, but you’re more of the romantic, I just don’t want you getting hurt.” Ailynn nodded. “Motion accepted.” she sighed. “I’m in love T. She completes me, but if there’s someone who will get hurt it’s her. We both know what you and I do, Caity does too, but I’m not sure that she understands emotionally that you have to literally send me to my death. She says she understands, and she’s been around me enough not to be put off…” “I get that. But it’s a little more than that. I just don’t want you to get into a situation where you feel like you are the one who is more invested. Dating a civilian is easier for us at the top of the food chain, because they aren’t in the command chain. But not all of them understand the….burden so to speak of fleet life. Even serving on a starship, they don’t have the same, you could go anywhere anytime life. Usually its a contract, many serve on the same ship for life. Captain after captain. Ash gets it, but she grew up in San Francisco. Around fleet families. I just don’t want you to get your heart broken. You’re family Lynn. You were well before I married Ash.” She nodded, and sighed. “You’re right of course.” she smiled at the pantomime horse as it ran through the bar, stealing someone’s drink, much to their drunken amusement. “She gets it. I’ve had that” she emphasised the word, “...conversation with her. Dale gave her the once over too it would appear. She passed that test.” “And if she hurts you, you say the word, and I will fire her in a second.” “I know. And it’s sweet of you to say. I appreciate that.” “Always.” “Jim?” Trip paused. She called him James when mad, Trip when happy, Jim when serious. “Yes Ailynn.” “I don’t know what the next year is going to hold for us, and I have no idea where we’ll end up a year from now. I don’t know where our careers will take us. I will always love and trust you. Implicitly.” “I know.” he said with a smile. “And don’t worry, I will kick you out of here when I think you’re ready to be a CO.” “Hey...the Hades class isn’t anywhere near completed yet.” she winked, and raised her glass. “It’s because they haven’t designed it yet.” He smiled. Ailynn smiled, and looked to the room. “It’s next up.” she smiled “So what are we toasting?” Ailynn smiled gently taking a step away. You remember that old movie that Dale used to love? The one with the bobsled?” “Yes. I do. She took us to see it at that one theatre that showed old 20th and 21st century films. You know the one, used retro technology to make it just like it was. It was a fun one.” She raised her glass, and clinked his. “Cool Runnings.” “Peace be the journey,” he replied. “Peace be the journey.” (Reply none) (USS Exeter–Deck 9, Holodeck 1 - SOPS, Lt. JG Billy Alexander and Civilian Addison Queen- 2348) Billy had been feeling a bit antisocial this evening. It was one of those moments where being in a long distance relationship sucked. He craved companionship. He wanted companionship. Not to mention that he hadn’t talked to her in months, since she was in the Gamma Quadrant. For all he knew there was a message making its way through subspace with Jaelle dumping him. Surely she’d understand that one time, on New Years eve, just someone to ring it in with. Of course he was lonely. He should have ended things the moment she left on her secret, radio silent, mission. Would have been easier. “Oh,” he said, as he walked by Addison, “Are you off, or are you serving drinks still?” “Evening Sir.” Addison said. “I’m still serving, what can I get you?” “Well, what do you recommend.” he said with a laugh. Addison looked at him, and smiled gently. “What kind of refreshment are you after? The grain or the grape? Something more...exotic maybe?” she said. Billy smiled. “Exotic sounds nice, what do you recommend?” he then gave her a sly smile. “Though out of curiosity, I must ask. Someone as beautiful as you, taking the shift right before the drop and not with some person on your arm. You must be a rather elusive prey, or a hunter who lost her prey to another lioness.” Addison laughed. “I recommend the ‘Risan Sunrise’ a strong, heady, yet fruity mix of exotic flavour.” Billy nodded. He analyzed each word she said, then tried to size her up as if he was about to enter into a negotiation or debate. “As to your other question. Elusive isn’t the right word, but it will suffice,” She regarded him closely as she answered. “I have no partner at the moment, but I am always always working...learning perhaps.” “I see. Well if I ventured to guess, I’d say you suggested the Risan sunrise, because you consider yourself refreshing and exotic, as well as a strong and intelligent person, the perfect combo of strength and fun. So I’d say you aren’t quite ready to throw in the towel. So, great hunter, what have you learned.” She smiled. “I’ve learned that you overplay your hand; had I have suggested a house bourbon because it is actually rather good, would you call me cheap? I offer you a glass of two-hundred year old Louis Treize would I be pretentious?” she asked, a playful smile on her face. Billy smiled. ~Bingo.~ “Well had you offered the louis treize, I’d say you were playing with me, trying to figure out whether I was pretentious or not. You are a lioness. Had I said oh yes. You’d know that I only said so because it sounded fancy, and you’d know that I knew nothing about it, knowing that age doesn’t necessarily mean quality.” “And the bourbon?” “As for the bourbon, well, a refined whisky palette knows that the house bourbon, is ok, but subpar to the private reserves. And I’d say that you were someone trying to drink bourbon because you want to impress someone who loves bourbon, and knows deep down. Some bourbon is better, but all bourbon is good.” “It is.” she admitted. “But to claim the house whiskeys as ‘okay’ is rather maligning the house no?” “You’ve obviously never been to Kentucky.” he said with a laugh. “Or you’ve never tried the Captain’s private reserves. But I bet you want to.” “Oh...I went there…” She smiled. “Quite a while ago.” “But you didn’t get the prize you wanted. Otherwise you wouldn’t be alone.” “Turned out that the Colonel was already married. What can I say? So what if I’d have offered a classic, a full bodied red. Would you be making similar insinuation regarding the First Officer?” “No.” He smiled. “The first officer is more of a Schapps. Red wine would indicate to me that your are classy, yet pensive. It is the perfect glass to scheme with.” Addison smiled, though her mind raced. “And so are you going to be equally judgmental toward my suggestion of accompanying snacks?” “Depends on my mood.” Addison sighed gently. “Salty?” “Honestly, after draggin around a nincompoop on some adventure with a stupid piece of metal from the year 1991. Yeah, I’d say I’m salty.” Addison raised an eyebrow, but said nothing. “Look, tell ya what, I’m lonely, you’re hot, and I got nothing to lose. Forget the drink, and the snack, and I’ll give you a piece of advice that has been passed down from generation to generation in my family, that will help you with your dilemma with the ‘married colonel’ over there. All you have to do is just stand next to me as the New Year’s gets rung in so I don’t look like a lonely loser.” “Billy. I am working. I like my job, at midnight I’ll probably be cleaning glasses or loading trays of champagne or something, because that’s what us on the bottom rung do, and I respect that. Besides...” “Well, I think you could be capable of more. You could run this place if you wanted. Fine, I’ll give you the advice for free.” “I could yeah, but that’s not the conversation, what’s the advice?” “Shit or get off the pot.” Addison smiled gently. “Are you sure of what you’re telling me to do?” she asked, an eyebrow raising.” “I’m just saying, either make a move or find new prey. Now I’m not saying ruin the captain’s marriage. But either tell him how ya feel, or cut your losses and find someone else.” She smiled, on a glance it was mischievous, but on closer inspection something so so much more troublesome. “Oh he’s going to end up in my bed, Lt. Alexander, one way or another.” nodding, she drained a glass of champagne off the tray that she’d been carrying, and picked up another. “Mark my words.” "It's good to have goals." The scene around them was an opulent Ballroom. Sighing happily and looking her girlfriend in the eyes, she laughed gently. Sighing happily, Caity looked up at Ailynn. "What you thinking about in that big brain of yours?" "I was just thinking. I'm always reflective at the times, looking to the past. It's been a crazy crazy year. And at the end of it here I am, with you." She nuzzled Caity’s neck with her nose briefly. "Certainly has. I mean who would have thought I would be dating the first officer. " She replied with a smile. "Kind of makes you wonder what conversations we'll be having this time next year. Where we'll be." "Who knows? That's part of the fun isn't it?" "Maybe?" Ailynn said dubiously. "How do you mean?" "The not knowing. Life is a journey. Sure, thereupon in the road, hills to climb etc but that's what makes it fun." "You sure? I mean I find myself surrounded by danger. You sure that you can commit to that?" Ailynn asked, noting that the surroundings had changed to a busy town square with a large clock counting down and a large ball ready to drop on the stroke of midnight. Five minutes to go. "I wouldn't be here if I couldn't wouldn't I?" "I love you deeply, but I worry what kind of trouble I'll get into next and one big constant I have is you, I worry that it'll be too much and you'll bail." She still held Caity close even though the music had stopped. "I'm not going anywhere. There's very little you could do that would cause me to walk away." Caity replied, resting her head on Ailynn’s shoulder. "That's good to know." Ailynn replied. " I just worry." "Look, Stop worrying. If Dale thinks I'm golden, surely that counts for something?" Ailynn smiled. "Yeah it does." She nodded at the clock "two minutes" "So I passed the family test… well the first part anyway." "So...are you happy?" "Yes. No matter how many times you ask me that, I am always going to say yes." "Good." Ailynn said kissing her. "Because I'm always going to ask." She smiled, noticing that there were only a few seconds left. She slipped her arms back round Caity’s waist, and then looking at the clock, "three... two...one… happy new year Caity DuBois." She whispered into Caity’s ear, then pulled her into a passionate kiss. Kissing her back, Caity looked into her eyes and smiled, "wanna get out of here?" Ailynn’s eyes twinkled. "I believe...Miss DuBois...that earlier on threats were made?" "Maybe?" " 'If I wasn't working…' I believe the words were?" She teased. Caity blushed furiously and looked down. "Well?" She raised an eyebrow, pecking her on the cheek in amused happiness. "Lets go…" "I'll follow you, my love." Ailynn held Caity’s hand, interlacing her fingers. She caught her gaze, and Ailynn opened and closed her mouth a couple of times, her brain not precisely sending the right words, wordlessly, she closed her eyes briefly, and nodding, a blush of her own rushing over face. She then led Caity gently through the crowd, headed towards the turbolift. (Reply none) (USS Exeter–Deck 9, Holodeck 1 - ACEO, Lt. JG Alistair Brightwood and Physio Cerise Blake- 2350) As the scene around them changed to a city square, Alistair turned to Cerise and smiled. “You know, this may come as a shock,” he laughed. “I’ve never spent New Years Eve with a date before.” Cerise smiled gently and wrapped her arms around his neck. "Me either." She said, sighing, "but I'm so glad you asked me." “Oh, ummm, why is that?” he asked awkwardly. "Because I like you, a lot. I find you lovely, handsome and charming." She kissed him. " Besides, I got this dress and needed a gig to wear it at." She said teasingly and motioned at the figure clinging, tastefully revealing dress that had greeted Alistair when he'd arrived at her door. “Yeah, but everyone knows you are a visage of Aphrodite herself. You could have blue jeans and a white t-shirt and turned heads.” Cerise blushed at the comparison. "That's sweet" “I mean you were queen bee. People don’t forget to bow, no matter how long the queen has been in retirement. I would know, I’m bloody British.” Looking a little awkward Cerise winced. "I understand the sentiment, but I couldn't be that person again, she was...Let’s not talk about that.” she kissed him again, “I prefer my life now. Friends, confidantes, people who confide in me, and you.” “I didn’t...I was just….my apologies.” he said sheepishly. She shrugged. “It’s okay you silly goose.” She smiled, and nodded toward a couple of young male Officers who were looking their way. “Friends of yours?” she asked gently. “I think, more likely jealous rivals.” he said with a laugh. “I’d duel them for you, but we live in a more civilized and equal age,” Cerise giggled. “Let them be jealous.” She decided, then kissed him again, and rested her head on his shoulder. “I can’t believe that I feel this free.” “What makes you say that?” He asked. “I mean, you weren’t necessarily in a cage.” “I was though.” she said, “it was a cage of my own creation, but a cage nonetheless. I told you about the accident, and about Miriam?” “You did.” “Since that day I carried the guilt from that, even her parents who I utterly adore, and ironically perhaps see me as one of their own, kept telling me to let go and move forward...and you helped me do that. You helped me see that I could begin to fall for someone, so long as they were kind, and gentle.” she blushed, she’d said a bit more than she meant to. “Well, it is still new for us. Let’s just enjoy the ride.” He said with a smile. “Like a leisurely sail.” Cerise nodded, agreeing, “Like a leisurely sail,” She smiled, happy. “Not long” she motioned to the clock. “Yes, but thats ok. From an intellectual standpoint, I just never saw the point of New Years Eve. Sure it ushers in a new year. But it’s just a day. Just the turning of a calendar page. Like a birthday. Just proof we’ve managed not to kill ourselves for 365 days. But...the company is nice.” “It is yeah. I think that you’re missing the more abstract side of it. Sure it’s just once more round the sun, or whatever, but it’s a chance to cast off old things, worries and the like, and just move forward and look to an empty clear page, where previously you were surrounded by a crowded, unhappy one.” “But I like my crowded pages. The bigger the volume, the more story I’ve told. Life is just one giant run on sentence.” He said with a smile. “You don’t have to discard the old pages, just keep them to one side and look at them if you need.” She pulled him into a close embrace. “So you can find space for new things.” “Oh but I’ve already penciled you in. There is a chapter with your name on it and everything.” “ A whole chapter…?” She laughed warmly. “I’m not sure if I’m worthy of that much.” “Well it depends. A chapter could be as short or as long as I want it to be.” Cerise smiled and blushed. “I see.” she smiled happily. The clock continued its inevitable countdown as she pulled herself against him once more, her head resting on his shoulder. “You can have as many chapters as you want. They are all yours. And I will share mine with you. New and old.” “My chapters?” she looked up and smiled. “The old ones are not your worry. That’s last years me. The new ones, well, I have a lot of help to...well...help…” The clock reached 0, and the area that they were in erupted into cheering and dancing. Cerise smiled, her heart glowing, and her eyes twinkling in the light from the dance floor. She pulled him close to her and into a deep kiss. “...new chapter.” “And to whatever that may bring.” Cerise nodded, looking across the floor she had noticed Trip and Ash slip away, followed a few moments by Ailynn and Caity. Genuinely happy, Cerise smiled deeply. “Lets go somewhere a little...more private.” “How private?” He laughed nervously. Cerise didn’t answer, but pulled him into another embrace, and kissed him again. Before pulling away slightly and regarding him. His rather dashing moustache was sort of distracting. She smiled. “We’ll start with ‘rather private...we can always move to very?” “Ummm….can we….just...do somewhat private….leisurely sail. I know the place,” He said with a smile. If you don’t mind a stroll through engineering.” “Sounds fun, somewhat private it is.” she smiled, and clasped his hand gently. “Onwards and upwards.” He said as they left the holodeck. “Onwards and Upwards.” (reply none) (USS Exeter–Deck 9, Holodeck 1 - OPS, Ensign SG Santiago Rodriguez and Med Intern, Acting Ensign JG Lana Wakeman- 2352) As Santiago saw the visage change, it reminded him of the times that he celebrated New Years Eve at the Puerta del Sol in Madrid. Walking around the crowd he accidentally bumped into Lana. “Ah excuse me señorita. I didn’t mean to run into you.” Lana was buzzed. She had to admit that Ashlyn had utterly utterly blown expectations and catapulted them, not only into the next year, but the next century. It was certainly far beyond what she’d always thought that she was capable of, just went to show that one shouldn’t make assumptions. She’d made that mistake before how many times over. “Santi!” She hugged him. “How are you? This rocks eh?” "Well how fortunate am I that the pretty lady knows my name." “Perhaps your reputation precedes you.” she teased gently, her eyes twinkling in the lights. "Oh. Pues, dime una cosa. What reputation is that?" Lana smiled. “You...Sir...are a charmer…” She smiled warmly, “a man...forgive me...gentleman, who likes the thrill of the chase?” "Sometimes, it's true, that the chase is, como se dice, more fun than the victory." Lana smiled, her mind maneuvering. “So tell me...lets say you were trying to work your magic on me? You’d perhaps start by ‘bumping into me?’ once more her eyes twinkled mischievously. “No, the accidena; bump is the move of someone who lacks confidence. I would walk up to you directly, and probably say something like, you know it never ceases to amaze me how much our world is filled with endless wonder. Porque cuando lo tomas in cuenta, we live on a ship capable of traveling almost anywhere, and we have this technology, where we can be in a ballroom, y después de algunos segundos, bamn, we are here in this beautiful plaza, with a crips sky, as if we were almost there in person. It almost makes you think.” Lana nodded. She didn’t speak much spanish, but the meaning was not lost on her. “Then once they say, makes you think what, I’d say, what other beautiful and wondrous moments that universe has in store for us.” “Beauty; I wonder about that.” she motioned around her. “None of this exists, but is it beautiful? If we were to transport to the actual location we’d feel different, yet what has changed?” Santiago laughed. “You are an odd one, miss, sorry, I don’t know your name.” “Lana.” she replied. “Lana Wakeman, Medical Intern. I’m Academy bound soon.” “See, Lana, you are different. Smarter maybe. You asked a follow up question. Normally they don’t. Normally they get all tingly, and say, ‘what sort of wonder do you think is coming?’ But you, didn’t focus on my accent or the foreign words, or the twinkle in my eye. You focused on the message, the actual wonder, not the pick up line. Commendable.” “I don’t speak any spanish, Bits of Italian, loan words perhaps.” she smiled. “You’re pretty cool, when you’re not being the player, just being you. “Sei piuttosto carino.” “But I’m always the player, even when working. Its not an act. I’m a shameless flirt. It’s just who I am. Sure people see me as charming, or a player. But it could be worse. No matter how sweet I am. Better to be an authentic flirt, then a sarcastic ass. Am I right?” Lana nodded. Motioning around the room. “Look at all this. Promises made, promises to be broken, altogether too many hormones.” “And so much regret coming to many in 8 hours. Very astute.” She blushed. “I just see what I see, in the same way you do maybe, though differently” “Personally, this is the one night of the year I don’t play the game.” “Not at all?” she asked, honestly. “Too easy, too many people desperate. Apparently, even in a civilized near utopian society, people are afraid of being alone on New Year’s eve. I love the game because it’s fun. And most of the time, we end up just going somewhere to talk. I’m not in it for the one night stand. I like the thrill, the conversation, and the connection. If it heads that way sure, fine. But night like tonight. Most people are lonely, drunk, or both. How is that fun.” “Oh, I totally agree. I hate talking with drunks, giving comfort to the lonely where fun in the short term, is hard work if they get attached.” she hooked her arm around his. “There are always certain distractions though.” Santiago nodded. “So who is playing who here? Seems I fell into your trap. I guess you are the one playing the game on New Years Eve.” “Me?” Lana blushed. “Seems however that it’s time.” she nodded to the clock, and the dancing. “So many emotions…” she said whimsically. “And what am I to do about it?” Lana smiled, and rested her head on his shoulder, and leant up and pecked his cheek, a friendly gesture. “Now we wait...this nonsense will pass.” She looked at him and smiled. “Lo que tu dices, mi reina, lo que tu dices.” He said as he put his arm around her waist and held her close and smiled. “Now...we celebrate.” She paused then in struggling spanish said, “Is hora de despertar al nuevo mundo.” She smiled and pulled him into another kiss. “Happy New Year Santi!” she called to him. “Feliz año nuevo, mi Reina.” he said with a sly smile. Always a player, always a part of the game. (Reply none) (USS Exeter–Deck 9, Holodeck 1 - CO, Captain Trip Williams and Dir. R&SE Ashlyn Williams - 2355) As the time grew nearer to the end of the year, the scenery of Holodeck 1 changed from a ballroom to that of a large city square with a large cylinder in the center with a ball that was ready to drop. Thankfully the holodeck was climate controlled, so what should have been a cold evening was the perfect temperature. Standing next to Ash, Trip turned to his wife and smiled. “Five minutes to go.” Ashlyn smiled, and slipped her arm around his waist, leaning on his shoulder and sighed happily. “Five minutes. What a year; How much has changed.” “Yup. You know around this time last year, I was proposing to you. Now we’re married, and I have a ship. You’ve been kidnapped, Ailynn almost died….banner year I’d say. But more good than bad.” “So much more good than bad,” She agreed, sipping at her drink, an alcohol free concoction designed to taste like a real cocktail. It didn’t, but she drank it happily anyway. “When are we shipping out? There are going to be a couple of hangovers tomorrow.” She smiled. “Day after tomorrow.” He said with a smile. “Enough time to get over a hangover, but not enough time for people to get over the regrets of whatever happens tonight.” “Hey, look over there. Is that Cerise? Kissing...oh girl, get a room.” she grinned. “Bless her, I am happy for her.” “Technically she is in a room.” Trip laughed. Ashlyn laughed, and kissed her husband gently. “We’ve all come so far in only a year, it’s insane. I wouldn’t change anything though, even the more traumatic things.” “Yeah, its the sad reality, we are the sum of our experiences. Take away just one of them, bad or good, and we become a different version of ourselves. For better or worse.” “On the positive, we got married, are stupidly happy, gained a son on the way,” She laughed. “Gained a daughter too.” “Yeah, time travel is weird.” He laughed. “Do you regret this journey?” She turned to face him and rested her arms around his neck, “Not a thing, not one step. Even when all those with Bajoran DNA were kidnapped. I’d go through all that again, to stay as happy as I am now.” “Sometimes….sometimes I wish we had a bit more quiet. I kinda miss the idea of a yard, a patio, and a view. Things were simple on Mars. But I guess this is home. I guess it feels more like home everyday. But I do miss a real sky.” “Yeah I know. Me too. We’ll have that again, I’m sure. Our little house, and the chinese place with the duck pancakes.” she smiled. “But for now this is home, and I like it here. I’m surrounded by amazing people, friends, family. I know that it’s harder on you.” “It is. 500 souls, 500 souls under my care.” Trip then placed his hand on Ash’s belly, “Well 501.” Ash giggled and smiled. “But it will be ok. Sometimes I just wish I could be 23. But I guess this is my path, my destiny, and I don’t know if you would like a reckless 23 year old me.” Ash shook her head. “Possibly not, grown up you is cute enough. Reckless you would stress me out. Especially if even half the stories Ailynn tells me are true.” She nodded toward Ailynn who had been dancing with Caity the other side of the room. “They are, but I was always in control. Always.” “Good.” She answered simply turning around one more. “Not long now.” she said motioning to the clock. “Yeah. Soon, and very soon.” He smiled. “Though last years New Years eve was more exciting, a moment in time I wish I could have preserved forever.” “You did.” she smiled. “In my heart.” Trip smiled and then turned his eyes to the countdown clock. “One minute.” Ashlyn fell silent for a few moments, just enjoying the peace and the ambiene before all the noise and celebration would break out again. She sipped briefly at her drink, before putting it back down. “Anything you want to say to me in the last minute of the year?” She looked at him, happily, but a semi-serious look on her face. “That I love you, more than you’ll ever imagine. When we reconnected I was still in part that girl from the other side of fifth and main, but getting to know you, and discovering ourselves, falling for each other the way we did...I love you Trip Williams.” “I love you too.” He said with a smile. He then looked at the ball as it began to drop. “Here we go.” “Here we go. In three…” “Two” “One.” Trip then turned and gave Ash a passionate kiss. “Happy new year.” Ashlyn melted into his kiss, but replied smiling. “Happy new year honey.” The noise of the cheering had erupted around them, and despite her enjoyment of the moment, it was getting a little uncomfortable. She pulled herself into a hug, “can we step out? bit noisy and close in here.” “You know, your staff can close up. We can head home anytime you want.” “Only if you’re certain, a bit of quiet alone time would be nice, while we can I mean?” “Plus, a good night’s sleep wouldn’t hurt.” Ashlyn smiled warmly. “Oh I didn’t say that now did I.” She winked and kissed him deeply again. “Say your goodnights to who you need to, then we’ll sneak out.” “Goodnights are overrated. I’ll wish them happy new years in the morning. This is the best time to sneak out, while everyone is distracted.” Holding his hand, she led him out of the Holodeck, and toward the turbolift. There would be a horrible amount of cleaning tomorrow, but tomorrow Ash could worry about that. “Come on before someone sees.” She giggled. “I’ll just order them to turn the other way,” Trip laughed as they disappeared into the turbolift and away from the action. Everything that had happened to the crew and to her had weighed heavily on her. The situation with Maxine, losing Nesha and Clarke and nearly dying herself was at the forefront mainly because it had only just happened. But thinking back, the year had been long, trying and right now, she almost wished she had a second chance to do it over. But then, part of her knew that she wouldn’t be her if she hadn’t gone through everything. ~People are the some of their experiences but some have more than others. Some go through life happy and jolly. Some go through life fighting every day. ~ she thought to herself. As the rest of the crew mingled around her and started counting down, Erin shook her head, took a sip of her champagne and sighed, “Well, maybe next year. Maybe that’s my year.” (Reply Any) (USS Exeter - Deck 9, Starlight Lounge -aACMO Ensign SG Heinrich Kruze - 2359) Heinrich hunched over his drink on the bar counter. Another year over. A new year about to begin. And what a year it had been. Heinrich graduated from Starfleet Academy and said goodbye to many of his friends, much like he had to earlier say good bye to his friends on Alpha 5. He was granted a spot on the Exeter. He had no idea what to expect, and still had very little idea of what he had experienced. Was it going to be like this throughout his tour? White rabbits and possessed officers? Mysterious urns and burned lieutenants? Already it was like a dream. He felt, at times, like he was struggling to stay afloat. Certainly nothing he had expected. He had grown up being told the stories of starfleet heroes of old. He thought those days were long gone. But were they? He kept an eye on the clock as those around him counted down. Ten, nine, eight, seven, six… He raised his glass. Five, four, three, two, one. Here’s to a new year and all that it has in store. (Reply none) (Uss Exeter- Nine & Dine - Medical Officer, Ensign JG Katie Jamison, M.D. 00 00) “Happy?” Katie sat across from Paul, his hand on hers. Her eyes sparkling in the dim light. "Yes I am, very much so." She mulled over the many changes in her life lately, especially this one, and the upcoming wedding. “This time next year we can celebrate as Mr and Mrs Sleeford or if you prefer Mr and Mrs Jamison. “ She smiled as he gave her options on her name but she shook her head. "Mr and Mrs. Sleeford has a nice ring to it." Her mind imaging her brothers trying to say it and knowing it would be a mouthful for them. “Happy new year darling” She raised her glass "Happy New Year." Katie took his hand and laughed at his comment. “Shall we go and get you out of that dress?” "I think I like the sound of that." She leaned over and kissed him before they moved towards the exit of the Nine & Dine. (Reply Sleeford) (USS Exeter– Starlight Lounge – CFO – Lieutenant – Ire Williams -0004) The room had gone wild as the countdown had reached zero and a new year had been ushered in. People had been hugging, kissing, and going crazy. He and Souliz had said their happy new years and then hugged. He smiled as he sipped his gin and tonic that Souliz had given him as he heard the opening words of Auld Lang Syne being sung very drunkenly. They were standing to one side of the large observation windows looking at Riza spinning slowly below them. “You said last night that was the first time you had been on Risa since your ship arrived?” Ire nodded. “Yes I had been here a very long time ago but I am not really one for that kind of thing?” “What you do not like Risa?” “I am not good with solid ground.” He saw the strange look on her face. “I was a zero-g baby and spent a lot of my really life in space.” She smiled at him. “So you are telling that a tough Starfleet officer is scared of gravity?” He gave her an irritated look which just made her smile wider. “That is not what I am saying.” “Good because I have some thing that you might like to see?” “Ow really.” “Not that silly something much better. You know that Risa is basically an artificial environment system, that Risa was geological unstable with earthquakes and continent spanning jungles.” Ire nodded. “Not really my field of study.” “Well, it was part of mine. Any why there is a temple on the highest mountain range on the planet. When the sun comes up it had one of the most spectacular views on the Risa.” “Really.” “Don’t worry I make sure that you don’t fall over the edge.” “Ow thank you very much.” She finished her drink. “Come on. Sunup will be in another couple of hours. We can transport close and walk the rest of the way.” “Go now?” He said looking over at the other party goers. “Yes, now the walk is part of the experience.” Ire nodded and finished his drink as he followed Souliz out into the corridor, towards the nearest transporter room.
