It had been longer than she’d intended for this, but time for both of them had been somewhat limited. There was a time, not that long ago, that she would have felt the doorchime as a backstop, a safety net. Now though, she simply needed to get through a door. She smiled, but said nothing, just trading a glance as she pulled a couple of crystal glasses, filling one and passing it over, before filling the other, taking a sip at the rarest vintage of her family vineyard, and tilted the glass, the artificial light, producing the purest, most deepest red. “Enter.” Trip said. He was almost done with work for the day, but right now he was browsing through romantic spots on Bajor for a quick getaway with his wife, for a dinner or two. She smiled deeply, sat on the couch in his ready room, the only person that would ever do so without invitation and spoke gently. “Last two bottles in existence. Their casks were settled when the first joists of this ship were laid down, and now...we drink to the success of your father’s dream. “Lieutenant Bracken, if I didn’t know any better, I’d say you were trying to get me drunk.” He said with a chuckle as he walked over the sitting area and sat perpendicular to her in an armchair. She smiled. “I am.” shrugging. “Though I have permission to do so.” “Oh, you spoke to the Missus then. I may be the captain, but she outranks me, so I’ve been told.” “Did I ever tell you…” Ailynn sighed, changing her sentence. “She was always the same kid. So gentle, deeply loving. No one ever saw her good nature back then. Prophets know I didn’t.” “Yeah,” Trip smiled. “Your wife is amazing, you know?” “I’m well aware.” He said with a smile. “Anyways, so, what’s the special occasion?” "We haven't had time to just sit and catch up yet, and we may never do so again" Ailynn answered “What do you mean, my door is always open….or is this because...I’m the, well boss.” She nodded. "Our relationship has changed irrevokably, I fear." She took a sip of her wine. “Well, only for the time you and I are on this ship together.” "I hope so," she replied simply. “I mean, yeah, there are certain things you can’t come to me for anymore. Like you know, if your boss is a down right arse. But I’m always going to be your best friend.” Trip ran his fingers over the scar on his left hand. "I know." She answered. "Means a lot to hear it though." “Besides, we’re family now remember. I get invited to the famous Bracken family Christmas, and you can’t kick me out.” "I couldn’t kick you out before, Dale likes you more than me I think." She smiled “So what’s on your mind Lynnie the Pooh.” She took a deep sip of the wine and placed it on the table. "I can walk into any Operating Theatre, and be the best player in the game. Here…" she waved her hand at the ship around them "...here...my phobia of failing is utterly off the scale." “You’ll do fine. I wouldn’t have picked you otherwise. The crew respects you. You won’t fail.” "I hope so." She smiled half heartedly. "I guess I'm just…" “The same old Lynn.” She looked up at him. He'd always been one of the only people that truly deep down understood her. "Really?" “That’s who you are, you’re still you. The only person who doesn’t quite realize how capable they are. Your mom knows it. Hell, I’m absolutely certain that she is afraid that you’ll do so well, you’ll never practice medicine again.” Ailynn laughed. "I'm sure that she has better worries. Besides, I'm not even sure myself what I want from the next 5 years let alone have the Admirals personnel worries on my mind." “Yeah, I’m in the same boat. I mean I might be Captain here, I might be somewhere else. But the uncertainty is kind of fun.” She picked up her glass again, "I still can't believe we did it. All the challenges and variables you know?" “We did it.” He picked up his glass and took a sip. "I haven't spoken to Ash much. She seems horribly happy. How is Aunty?" She sipped deeply. “It’s still weird to hear you call her aunty. Don’t know if I’ll ever get used to it. She’s good, she’s happy, but….. Well I guess even though we’re optimistic, she still worries a bit.” Trip began rubbing the back of his neck. “Just waiting to see if this new treatment works.” "For what it's worth it's a really good option. Vesper knows what he's doing. I trust him." “But as long as we’re together, I think Ash and I can overcome anything.” "You guys are good together. I'm biassed of course, but you make a cute couple." “I just wish she’d get off my back about.... kids.” "Wanting them or is she fighting you off with a stick?" Ailynn quipped, her mouth moving before her brain engaged. "Sorry. Filter's broken." “I mean we both want them, but Ash is so maternal. It's crazy. It’s like sometimes I wonder how she can even be a Bracken. But from what I’ve been told her mom, Kadaya, was one of the sweetest, gentlest, kindest souls ever. So I guess that’s one point for nurture versus nature.” “She’s certainly a lot less...flighty and more eager to settle. I will give you that, us Bracken girls do have a tendency to not really settle until older.” “No offense to the Bracken’s of course. She still has that Bracken genetic predisposition to extreme intensity.” “And a twinkle of edventure in her eye. No offense taken by the way.” “How has it been, being FO, are you adapting to it well. It’s very different then prodding and poking with medical instruments.” Ailynn’s face fell serious for a moment. “Honestly Trip, I’m not sure yet. I’m still finding my feet. I suppose my best answer is that the medic in me hasn’t settled yet, I’ll need more time to quell her. It was all I could do to stop myself steaming down to sickbay when Gabe told me about your condition.” “Well It’s your mom’s research that is making it so I can live a normal life.” Ailynn nodded, “She always was a dreamer, a big picture girl. Not one cut out for Command, by her own admission. Again I’m biassed here, but one of the greatest medics this century.” “Honestly, some of the credit goes to Ronnie. Apparently she told Gabe about the lecture you took her to that your mom gave on nano probe technology and medical advancements and that gave Gabe the idea for the treatment.” “I remember, Understanding it as I do, Growing up with mum ranting about the fact that noone would explore these possibilities, I only understood one word in five. Ronnie was asleep in her seat.” “Anyways, back to you, so everything is going ok as FO?” “I suppose ‘I’m doing okay’ is my best assessment. You know me though, I don’t do anything ‘okay’. Ask me again after this mission.” “You’ll have to ask me the same.” She drained the glass, and poured another each, she undid her uniform top, the vest top covering her modesty. “The irony is amusing though. All those years, fighting against our parents shadows, wanting to become our own people, dominating our own destiny, only to come to the realisation that this…” she waved around her “...was our destiny all along? That certainly myself, the destiny I tried to escape was this uniform, and amongst the 4 youngest Command Officers in recent history.” “Yeah, its odd too, because it’s like Sy and I are amongst the youngest three of my cousins in Starfleet. Jimmy, DJ, Chris all went in before us. Jimmy was a Second Officer, but it took him five years to get there, now in his sixth year in the fleet he’s CO of the 1st Fighter Wing of Mars, but like, he’s replacing me. DJ, just made Lt. SG, Chris just made Lt. JG, both are only department heads. And here Sy and I are, FO and CO after one year. Sometimes I wonder if it’s our skill, or if we were just right place at the right time, you know. But I hope with Starfleet getting their act together, those guys finally get their due.” Ailynn drank deeply again. Then put her glass down properly, and fully removed her uniform top, her arms bare against the ambience of the room. “Hope you don’t mind.” She motioned at the vest top. “I’m decent, and red wine makes me feel warm.” “No its ok.” Trip smiled, “Computer, lower room temperature 2 degrees.” =/\=Acknowledged=/\= “We’ve spoken of this how many times; but you’ll remember all those barbecues, I don’t mean the ones that the Flags came to, I mean the family ones, your lot...my lot...and those couple of others who only turned up to those things. I never thought it weird until that day at the academy. Our parents were the visionaries that should have been Admirals 20 years ago, instead sycophants feeding off their own self importance who only ever flew a desk.” “Well its been that way on Earth for millenia. When a group of people get in power, rather than say, be altruistic, they look at it as, good, it’s our time to eat.” “Now though...I dunno, feels like we’re back on the course that we should have been, and okay, it may be that we’re the brightest of the bright, and yeah that’s scary, but here’s the question, and one that came to me only a couple of days ago. Would our parents trust anyone else but us to do what was needed to be done. Would you trust anyone else?” “I don’t think that’s it. We were set on this course before they were set on theirs. We were placed in positions to do good before the admiralty got their stuff together. And yes, I would trust others. I trust everyone on this ship to see it through.” “Anyways enough philosophising.” She paused, flashing a cheeky smile at him. “I can still say that. I’m not drunk enough yet. How are you feeling, I’ve been so good, I’ve not looked at your charts.” Trip began rubbing the back of his neck. “The treatment is great, but this enhancing my Betazoid abilities temporarily is taking some getting used to. I’m picking up emotions left and right that I can normally screen out. Thankfully, telepathy is minimal or non existent, just a stray thought to go with an emotion, but I can screen those out. But dangit, at the Nine and Dine for lunch, I could feel the joyous emotions people had just taking a bit of the steak sandwich. It’s nuts.” Ailynn smiled. “I have to say...Caity makes a steak sandwich that rivals your pops’s sorry to say it man. Not sure why…” She looked puzzled for a second, then clicked her fingers...Dijon Mustard and cayenne pepper. Seriously good steak marinade. Improved my mood no end.” “Speaking of which, I’m not trying to pry, but you’re kind of broadcasting it. Seems like you had a productive swim last night. Glad you’re getting exercise. Good for the stress.” He said with a laugh. Ailynn smiled and laughed. “Haven’t had any exercise for ages, weeks. Needed to stretch out and get the blood flowing a bit. Ironic since I don’t even like swimming. Had fun though. You should go. Get a couple of lengths in.” She smiled gently, glad they were finally having this moment. It's all the change coming so thick and fast that's kind of off-centred me so much. How are you doing?" Ailynn said. “My life is changing in a huge way and I’m just doing my best to stay afloat.” He said rubbing the back of his neck. He then pulled her into a big hug. “And even without my heightened empathic abilities, I can tell you’re trying to just stay afloat too.” She hugged him back, glad that they still had that closeness. "Yep. Trying to stay afloat, don’t even like swimming." Ailynn said with a smile. “I’m aware.” Trip said with a chuckle. “But you still go out there anyways.” Ailynn nodded, but kept quiet, as Trip kept on speaking. “Listen, I need you to promise me something.” Trip said releasing the hug and the sitting back down, rubbing the back of his neck. "Sure...what is it?" “I need you to promise me, that if anything happens to me, you make sure Ash is safe, ok?” Ailynn smiled, "Trip, she's family, I'd die keeping her safe, you know that." She squeezed his hand. "I promise." Seeing that the glasses were empty, Ailynn poured once more. “No more for me,” Trip said as she was pouring. “But please go ahead.” Trip sighed. It turned out that there was only half a glass left, so Ailynn emptied the bottle and picked up the glass. She motioned toward Trip's neck. "You keep fiddling, is it bothering you or just a habit?" “No, not bothering me, just dealing with the knowledge I know something is there.” "Okay. If you're sure" “Everything is changing, everything is new. Was taking on command so young, such a good idea?” "Somebody, somewhere thinks you're up to it. You didn't get this ship because your Dad designed her, you got this Command because you're the best man for the job." “Deep down in my heart, I know that.” Trip sighed. Ailynn drained her glass and placed it on the table. "In the nicest way...you look tired. Go and hug your wife and get some rest Skipper." “Lynn, can I, can I tell you something, and please don’t tell Ash. I just learned something, and it’s going to change everything, and she doesn’t know. I don’t know how to tell her.” He began rubbing the back of his neck with a bit more intensity. “It just has me a bit worried, about, things. This whole, diagnosis thing has come so fast, there is so much unknown and variables, so many changes because of it. Just don’t know how to break this news, ya know.” "Trip, you’re scaring me. Honey, what's happened?" “Everything I tell you here, I say in confidence, you can’t tell anyone, not even Ash.” Ailynn nodded without hesitation. "Anything. You know that." “Ailynn…” He said not using her nickname to highlight the seriousness of the situation. “Well, the truth of the matter is……” (reply none) (posted by Will and Mark) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>><<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< Mission: The Flames of Purity Day: 15 Stardate: 2445.09.015 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>><<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< (Badlands – Asteroid Research Facility – Lead Scientist - Dr Fave Itel – 0845) Fave looked at the over centuries old schematics again. They had been provided by a mole they had in the Star Fleet archives. The Vessel himself had said that this project was important. The schematics came in a much older format, but seemed to be the version of the initial proposal to the Federation, they needed funding? Or perhaps permission to work on such an ambitious project? He was thankful for this group “funding” his research. His work was important for Bajor, but Federation Laws did not allow it saying it wasn’t safe. He got to work on what was important, and they furthered their cause, the betterment of Bajor. The shortsighted lofty-ideals of the Federation. A thorn in the side of anyone who worked with certain unstable elements. It forced him to get his materials from other sources. Like the Tzenkethi . =^=They’re back from their latest run.=^= came an announcement. ~Perhaps they have it.~ He thought before making all due haste out his office door. It was hard to get much traction here on the base as the asteroid was barely bigger than a large moon. He rounded the corner just in time to see several people beam down from the ships. Trentin Tel'ni'li was leading the group. The very daughter of the Vessel. He had left her in charge while he was still in exile, didn’t say why, no one would say why. He approached the young Bajoran woman. “Madam Trentin, have your adventures bore fruit? Did the vessel have dealings with the Tzenkethi? Did it have the proto-matter on board?” He asked bowing slightly and tried to be a pleasant as he could as this young woman had his career in her hand. ~Doesn’t hurt to be polite.~ (Reply Tel’ni’li) “It does?” He was elated. ~Finally!~ “Have the transporter operators accounted for the matrix variances?” he asked matter-of-factly. (Reply Tel’ni’li) “Oh, no madam I would not dare to suggest such a thing. Of course if you got it here of course you knew of the dangers of transporting proto-matter,” He answered humbly. “I meant no disrespect.” (Reply Tel’ni’li) “Of course. Right away!” He said as he got out of her way and went to go retrieve his reagent. (Reply Tel’ni’li, any cult member) (posted by Todd, NPC) (USS Exeter – Bridge – Tac/Sec - Ens.Stan More- 09:33) Stan could not believe he was here. Standing at the tactical station on the bridge of the USS Exeter. Next to his department head. The last eleven days had been hectic. Sleeford had put them all through their paces. Which More had been quite happy to do. Yellow tops like the old red shirts. In the days of a certain Captain. Whose name in Scotland was also another name for church. Where still had the highest death rate. In fleet history. So he felt that whatever was about to jump out at them. At least they would be trained to resists. Plus his phaser rifle shooting score had risen to 89%. “All hands this is the Captain, we’ve been given new orders by Starfleet HQ. This is going to push us to our limits, but I know that this crew is up to the job. Your department heads will brief you on your assignments. You have performed admirably to this point. I fully expect all of you to continue to do so. Captain Williams out.” Sleeford looked at More and raised his eyebrows, something serious was going on. Good job they’d had the extra training. Trip then opened the ship wide comm channel a second time, “All hands prepare for activation of the Quantum Slipstream Drive. Will all department heads report to the observation lounge immediately.” Once they where on their way. The department heads filed out with the Captain. Stan stepped up to the Tactical Console. He turned to Sleeford. “ Thank goodness for those extra drills you made us do.” Stan said ( Reply , Sleeford ) “ Nay. I fully agree with ya. It’s always better to be safe then have yee. Head in some wee villains trophy cabinet.” Stan explained ( Reply , Sleeford ) ( Posted by:- Norman 🐼) USS Exeter – Bridge – Tac/Sec - Ens.Stan More- 09:34) As Stan stood at his post he glanced down at the tactical Console. He was glad Sleeford was near at hand. More had never been on a vessel with quantum slipstream drive. Let alone have it on while he was manning his post. There where a few readings he was not sure about. But having an officer who knew what to expect. Made Stan feel a little easier. It all reminded him of the time back in Edinburgh when Gale. No Stan did not wish to think of his ex. Even when she was a sweet wee thing. Before she turned into a heart destroying succubus. He wanted to ask for a class of water. But that might be misinterpreted as weakness. No he just swallowed and continued at his station. (reply any) ( Posted by:- Norman 🐼) (USS Exeter – Bridge – aCTO – Ens. SG. Paul Sleeford- 09:35) Standing at the rear tactical station reading the screen, glancing at the view screen, glancing round the bridge, Sleeford saw what he felt on the faces of the crew manning the bridge, apprehension and fear of the unknown. Seeing More walking over Sleeford turned his attention to the younger man. “ Thank goodness for those extra drills you made us do.” Stan said. Smiling slightly, “There’s a marine maxim, ‘Train hard fight easy’ . The more you train, the easier it will be when we have to fight. Plus in our game you never know what round the corner.” “ Nay. I fully agree with ya. It’s always better to be safe then have yee. Head in some wee villains trophy cabinet.” Stan explained Laughing Sleeford nodded. “To be honest Stan , I’m rather keen to keep my head where it is, I’m rather attached to it” Feeling a weird vibration through the deck plate Sleeford knew the QSD was activated. Swallowing the lump in his throat Sleeford closed his eyes for a second. Despite the academy simulator training, the feeling of the drive engaging always turned Sleeford’s stomach. Looking down at his console made the feeling worse, taking a deep breath he focused on the readings, with the drive engaged the tactical readings where a little off, tapping a few commands to compensate. Looking across to where More stood, Sleeford saw the younger man was suffering as he was. (Reply None) (Posted by Alistair) (USS Exeter - Corridor - CMO/ ACFO - Ens Gabe Vesper/ Ronnie Winters- 0943) Gabe walked hurriedly along the corridor, he didn't want to be late and nor did he seem over keen. The last week had been a difficult one, he had seen the Captain every day probing and prodding at the chip he had installed, read out after read out of information trying to determine the best course of action. Today was the first day in five that things had settled a little and he didn't want to unnerve the young man by barging in; he knew the impact that Drs had on people, he knew the stress they could bring. Arriving at the turbo lift he pressed the call button, it was going to be a quick, short and uneventful trip to the Bridge, but by walking into the observation lounge he knew he would become more than a dr, he was now a department head; not only accountable for the mental and physical wellbeing of the ship, he now had to manage the performance of some of them. Laughing away the assumed power he now had the doors opened. Locking eyes on the only person in the lift his heart sank a little. The euphoria of the last week or so had overshadowed the eureka moment that Ronnie had enabled, he had been so busy and tired that he hadn’t reached back out to her, but also, he noticed that she didn’t reach out to him. Smiling the warm smile she encouraged from his cold and unloving exterior he stood next to her. “Bridge” he called turning to her as the doors closed “good morning Ronnie” “Good morning,” Ronnie replied. She had tried to keep her distance from him ever since he kissed her. She didn’t know if he did that because he was excited or because he liked her. But they didn’t really know each other. She liked him, she thought he was cute, but she just wasn’t sure. She was the brother of one of her closest friends. Not to mention she wasn’t really sure if she wanted a serious relationship at this time. She needed time to figure out if the kiss meant anything. But of course that also meant regressing to being a teenager and hiding from him for awhile. “How’s it going Gabe?” “Really good, your suggestion was well received by Admiral Bracken and we got the trial. Performed the operation the other day.” Gabe shifted a little, he sensed that Ronnie was distant from him “ Thought I might have bumped into you, seems our duty shifts are conflicting. Although, I thought I saw you in bean me up yesterday?” "Well when your shift runs from 1600 to 2400 you need caffeine at 1500 hours," Ronnie said with a smile. "Yeah Trip and Ash thanked me. But you did all the hard work. So thank you." “Couldnt have done it without you, I’ve put it in my report to Medical.” "Look, I umm, sorry for being distant, I uh, have had a lot going on." “Its ok, I’ve been busy with Trip.” Gabe felt like he had misread the situation and shuffled away a little to give some space,. “Hey listen, maybe when things settle down, do you want to get coffee later, catch up.” "Yeh, I suppose that would be good" Gabe sighed a little. At that moment the door opened for the bridge. “You’re sweet Gabe. Just find me when things are settled, I’d love a chance to just sit and chat.” "Well, I guess i'll see you around then Ronnie" Gabe exited the lift along with the woman who went to the helm . Ronnie made her way to the helm and sat down. She felt bad. She wanted to tell Gabe that she liked him back. She wanted to just give him a hug and reassure him. But there was something holding her back, just a little bit of fear and anxiety. She had to push it out, ignore it for now, so she could make sure that the Exeter stayed in the splipstream. Still she knew that when they finally met for coffee, she’d have to tell him how she felt, feelings, fears, and the way he made her laugh. (Reply none) (Posted by Mat&Will) (USS Exeter – Bridge – Tac/Sec – Ens. Stan More - 09:45 ) Stan stood at the tactical consul. He glanced at the readings. A wave of nausea came over him. As the quantum slipstream drive kicked in. More blinked and shook his head. Surely this was not normal? Glancing at Sleeford Stan could see. That someone else was being effected the same way. He needed to concentrate on something other. Then his personal distress. More could not tell if the strange readings. The console was giving out. Was normal for a ship in Slipstream or if this was a fault. He remembered something his Grandmother had told him. “ All ways be careful how yer go. Remember yer poor grand pappy. If only if only if only. Ya nay won’t yer heed ending up. In some alien persons trophy cabinet.” She told him. He turned to Sleeford.” These readings are they normal for a ship in quantum slip stream drive?” (Reply Sleeford) ( Posted by:- Norman 🐼) (USS Exeter – Bridge – aCTO Ens. He turned to Sleeford.” These readings are they normal for a ship in quantum slip stream drive?” “I think so, I know during the simulator training in the academy there was some anomalous readings” Seeing the door to the observation lounge open and the department head leave to their various offices. Seeing the looks on their faces Sleeford knew they were in deep trouble. (posted by Alistair) (USS Exeter - Observation Lounge - CSO Lt JG Erin Cortez - 1013) Listening to the briefing, Erin knew this was something big. The fact they had been moved from their original course to deal with this growing situation had told her that this was something that needed dealing with and quickly. ~The Badlands? That is gonna be a bumpy ride for a ship this size~ she thought to herself as Trip spoke to the assembled senior staff. "Lieutenant Ravok, Lieutenant Cortez, I need the two of you to get your teams together. We need our sensors operating at peak efficiency and able to handle the environmental disturbances of the Badlands. We will most likely need to go in and explore, I need the ship functioning as peak as possible." Ravok glanced across the table to Erin and smiled slightly, nodding his head. " Yes Sir, we will have sensors adjusted accordingly based off all available up to date intelligence" Ravok replied. Looking at Ravok and then to Trip, Erin nodded, “We will have the sensors ready for you sir.” As the briefing continued, Erin felt a growing sense of unease within her. Not knowing why or what it was, she could feel part of her fighting the unase and trying to calm and think logically. Knowing she and Ravok and their teams had three hours, less than that now, made her focused. She knew what her team had to do and she knew they would deal with it. (Reply No-one) (Posted by Jackie) (USS Exeter - Observation Lounge - CFO – Lieutenant – Ire Williams - 10:17) Ire thought about what Trip was saying a Denorios class interceptor and three old Saber classes. The Denorios was old and the Sabers were around 75 years in service but that did not mean that they combat with them was going to be easy. He had not flown a Saber before, but he knew that design they were small nimble starships with most of their armament facing forward. They had four phaser arrays and one forward and aft torpedo launcher. Which all in all, in itself was nothing for him to worry about but three in coordinating attacks in the tight confinement of the Badlands. If they fought in the bad lands that smaller ships would have an edge on manoeuvrability. All it would take was for them to disable power losing thrusters or impulse engines at the wrong point and they would drift into a plasma storm and there would be nothing left to scan for. He had done that route many times when he was on the Road Runner and had participated in a few rescues in his time not all of them successful. This was not going to be easy that was for sure. He was pulled out of his thoughts as he heard his name being called. "Lt. Williams, right now, we are going to need you to fly your damndest. We need to maintain slipstream, or well, kaboom. Plus as a former fighter pilot, I know you will know what do when we get in a fight. But I want you in constant contact with Lieutenant Merek. After the meeting he would also head down to the main shuttle bay and see how Tiar was doing down in the shuttle country. He would go to chat to Rivers as well to see if she wanted some more time in the helm while they were in Slipstream as well as tell in her what is going to happen. He The last thing that he needed was for his two senior members of the department to go into battle clueless. He realised that the Trip had asked for question and that the meeting was finishing. (Reply Merek, any) (Posted by Robbie) (USS Exeter - Observation Lounge - 2O/CEO – Lieutenant Keira Merek – 1018) As the Captain briefed the mission before them Keira soon realized what the mission was, why the sudden change of course and speed. It was likely they would see combat against multiple opponents. Their opposition were also fanatics, believing that their views were not only correct but Right and Good. They very well could be fighting to the end and may destroy themselves than come to the conclusion that they were mistaken in their fervent beliefs. "Lt. Williams, right now, we are going to need you to fly your damndest. We need to maintain slipstream, or well, kaboom. Plus as a former fighter pilot, I know you will know what do when we get in a fight. But I want you in constant contact with Lieutenant Merek. Any chance even a small chance that the prefix codes are intact and we could use them to our advantage? Also if I remember my history the Maqui couldn’t get any explosive ordinance until they stole it from Starfleet. Have any torpedoes gone missing? It would be very advantageous if we had torpedoes and they did not. I’d bet real money these pirates are just attacking soft targets, the Aurora, though Starfleet and no offense to her Captain, it’s a science vessel and not a cruiser.” (Reply Trip, Bracken, or Tactical) (Posted by Todd) (USS Exeter - Observation Lounge - Chief Tactical Officer Ensign Dareshaa - 1019) The Exeter's Commanding Officer explained the change in their orders, and gave a complete background as well. Lieutenant Commander Williams then explained he wanted Dareshaa and Lieutenant Foxglove to team up to contact the suspected terrorist's ex-wife. "I will get right on it," Foxglove answered and Dareshaa answered simultaneously, "Aye Commander." "Ensign Dareshaa, I'd also like you to have Ensigns Sleeford and More ready the ship for combat. We don't know what kind of tactics we'll see. They need to be ready for ship to ship combat, and get tactical teams ready for boarding." "Absolutely, my officers will be ready," she responded with confidence in her team. Ensign Sleeford has been a superior Assistant Chief for the Tactical department, and has been keeping the department ready. More conversation transpired from the other departments and when all were done speaking Commander Williams closed the meeting. (reply none) (posted by Calvin Capps) (USS Exeter - Observation Lounge - CO LtCmdr Trip Williams and FO Lt(sg) Ailynn Bracken - 1020) “Lieutenant Bracken, when we dismiss, I need to speak to you further on our plans and next steps” Ailynn nodded, replying simply. “Aye Sir” Her mind was racing. Trip continued. “Now then, any questions.” As any questions were asked, and replies given, everyone filed out, leaving her and Trip in the room on their own. She exchanged a glance, showing her worry, and concern. “The Badlands? The Prophet’s fire? The cult of the Pah Wraiths?” She observed quietly. Trip just looked down. “Yes, I know.” Ailynn sighed, even a few hours ago she would have had a significant reticence about her decision to accept this posting. She was a medic, not a Command Officer. With that said, Trip and her had always been counterpoints to each other. They didn’t always agree, but they’d always known how to disagree. Ailynn had no empathic ability, although with that said, there were times that they could look at each other and a whole conversation was held in a glance. “What gives...new slant on old Doctrine? New leader?” “While the leader is different, a lot of the members of the cult are the same depraved terrorists who killed Ash’s father, causing Dale to offer her up for adoption to protect her, as they swore to wipe out Ronal Ashalon’s bloodline.” Aillyn nodded standing up and stretching, and moving around the room. Trip knew her quirks, she thought better moving around on her feet. “Ash?” She asked. “We have to preserve the lie.” “We should have picked a better lie, I’m a better liar than your gorgeous wife is; but that’s by the by. It is what it is, anything close to home we’ll roll with the punches as they come.” She looked at him. “...and I’ll die protecting her.” She shrugged simply. “Well, as long as no one spills the beans, it’s a non issue.” Trip paused. "Look, I know you'd give your life for her, as would I. But, look…." Ailynn sighed, “I’m being melodramatic, I know.” "Should I send her off ship, should I ask for a secret bodyguard? Should I even tell her who we're facing?" “If you send her off ship, right now, then someone somewhere will see that and ask questions, and if they’re the right questions in the wrong place, then it could lead back. Same thing for a bodyguard, it’ll just raise more problems than it covers.” "I know…." He said in a volume akin to a whisper. “However, Ash has to know, you...we...have to tell her where we’re going, we can not hide it.” "The thing is, I mean yes intellectually you're right. But… I mean telling her doesn't conflict with the mission. So I guess I should." “It’s a grey area, it’s possible that it could be construed as a breach of security, but Ash knows what she’s about. She can keep her mouth quiet.” "Was it a mistake to bring her with me?. I mean, is this life conducive to having a family?" Ailynn shrugged. “This is a stressful calling, you need that normalcy to fall back on, and Ash needs to be with you, and I’ve spoken to her and she’s more full of life than I’ve ever seen her. Would I want my wife at my side? Depends on who she was, what type of person she was, but sure as hell anyone that puts up with your arse must have a sense of adventure.” "She's stronger than I am for sure." "Stronger than both of us." Ailynn answered. "Any thoughts on our orders " "None that I haven't already expressed. Most of it we deal with stage by stage leaning on our training. It's the bit where we're cruising the badlands looking for terrorists that worries me." "Yes. But I trust our team to make our lives easier." He said with a chuckle. "If we manage to disable the cult flagship, I'm going to send an away team over for investigative purposes. Be thinking on who you'd take." Ailynn nodded, she'd been expecting to be asked this at some time "I will. Couple of ideas already." She looked at him. "How are you doing anyway? The head I mean." “I’ve gotten a handle on the increased abilities, so I’m not picking up stray thoughts or picking up stray emotions. It’s just weird you know. You learn about in school how dangerous and scary the borg are. I mean the borg killed my dad’s first wife. And now it’s borg tech that’s essentially going to give me a normal life. I don’t know it’s all weird.” "It isn't borg tech per se. Mum saw what the nanites did and recreated the tech...but yeah…" Ailynn answered. “But everything is working well, as far as I know. Nothing alarming or that would disqualify me from duty. So no Captain Bracken just yet.” Trip then laughed. Ailynn laughed gently. "Wash your mouth out young Williams. 'Sides...I don't want to be Captain, I have 3 Admirals to catch up." “Don’t we all.” She smiled whimsically, but she knew Trip knew her, even without the nanite-induced Buffs. She knew that although she could cope with stress, that she herself had to calm down and relax into her new post. “Don’t worry. We’ve got this all under control.” ~I hope.~ Nodding silently, she pulled her top back on, and did up the fastenings to parade standard, "I'd better go, Later T." She patted him on the shoulder as she moved behind him, taking a quick look at the chip at his neck. “Yeah, its subdermal, you aint gonna see it, now matter how smooth you think you are.” "Dammit! Permission to leave?" “Yeah. If you get a chance, check in with Ensigns More and Sleeford. They’re prepping in case of incursion. Be nice if you could get with them, see where their heads are at. Also check with Vesper. Don’t step on his toes, but you’ve got a better handle on triage plans than I do.” Ailynn nodded. “I’ll speak to them. Vesper and the medical team will have it in hand, but I’ll check in anyway.” “And yes, dismissed.” Ailynn nodded a goodbye as she turned and left, her mind already on a number of things. She had a few things to catch up on first, but her job list for that morning was now set in her mind. (USS Exeter - Sickbay - Nurse -CPO – Ewan McDonald - 10:23) Ewan looked up as Vesper entered Sickbay. He had hardly stopped before he started to talk. "I'll get to the point, we're being diverted from Bajor to the Badlands in search of a Bajoran terrorist sect. The ship is in Slipstream but im sensing that the command team arent too confident of our exit. We're to go to readiness stations. I need a tiriage centre set up in the cargo bay three and shuttle bay 1, we will need to divert medical teams to key areas across the ship to drive down the response times. I want a small team to the Bridge one to Engineering all three decks. Larger teams stationed in the emergency bays; I dont want a repeat of the poor response times from the senario we had, understood? Any questions?” Ewan winced mentally. The scenario had not got as well as had been hoped but that was the point of scenarios to learn from their mistakes and more forward. Cargo bay three would be easy to convert as it was just a large room. They could move the storage containers around to make cordoned off areas and deploying teams around the ship was prudent. His concern was the shuttle bay it was an active place and although setting up the equipment was easy making sure that there was enough space for the shuttle craft that were in there at the time would be challenging especially if they were doing launch and recovery at the same time. It was possible and he had been involved with it once or twice but it was very stressful for all concerned especially the pilots who liked to have a good margin on error what manoeuvring their heavy shuttlecraft around the interior of a shuttle bay. He waited for a few questions before he spoke up and new what he was setting himself up for when he asked it. “Umm sir, has Shuttle bay one been informed that we are going to set up there?” (Reply Vesper) (Reply, Vesper, medics, any) (Posted by Robbie)(SPC Ewan Mcdonald) (USS Exeter -Shuttle bay One - Lieutenant – Ire Williams/ Ensign - Isra Tiar -10:26) Ire stepped into cavernous space that was shuttle bay one. His eye drifted to the delta class shuttle that was sitting on the deck. He smiled wistfully as he looked at its sleek profile and felt a pang of sadness for his lucky thirteen which was back on Mars being flown by Sonnolo who was now the Squadron leader of the Void Hunters. ~What I would not give for the 1st Fighter Wing to be here as well. It would be good to have some more eyes out there and have other attack options~ He pulled his mind back from its meanderings as he spotted Tiar and headed over to her. “Good morning how are things in the shuttle bays today?” Isra was reading over the padd in one hand and alternating drinking from a cup in the other when Ire spoke. She glanced up. "Good morning. Just getting started on reports Sir." “Okay. I have just come from a senior staff meeting. We have been diverted to the Badlands, traveling there at slipstream and we should arrive in about three hours. We are going after a Bajoran terrorist cell that has been attacking shipping in the area. They have three Sabers and an older Denorios class interceptor which they have been using with good effect. They were able to attack the USS Aurora with an improvised explosive devise hidden in an escape pod.” Isra frowned. "Wow" she glanced at the padd. "Guess this changes things for us doesn't it?" Ire gave a slight smile. “Well there is nothing like a little bit of rapid change to get your priorities in order that is for sure.” He indicated to the Padd. “What’s on the report any thing I need to know about?” “Or your blood pumping?” she replied as she passed the Padd to him. “Nothing, same old, boring night from the looks of things.” Ire nodded, happy that there were no problems with the shuttle bays especially if they were going to go into battle. “I don’t know what’s going to happen when we get to the Badlands but if we are going into combat is everything ready down here.” Isra looked around her and nodded. “Yes Sir. What do they plan for us to do?” She wanted to be ready for anything … .before it happened. “From what the Skipper said during the meeting we will try and apprehend the terrorist leader and his lieutenants. Which looks like we are going to have a fight on our hands if what the reports have told. And us going up against four ships is not going to be easy.” “But for you and the shuttle bays in particular guess make sure you have a ready flight shuttle in case of emergencies.” “Doesn’t sound fair .. four against one. But I know we’re up for the task.” She nodded. “I will get right on it.” she frowned. “They will probably use one of the bays for triage too? “Well they are three Sabers and a Denorios so in a stand up fight we win hands down but we are going to be in the Badlands and as you know we are not exactly small compared to a Saber so they will have an edge on maneuvering around those plasma storms. Which means it's not going to be easy.” “About the triage I am guessing that might be a sensible idea.” He looked around the shuttlebay. “What do you think? Is there enough room for them here and the alert shuttlecraft or do you think they should go down to shuttle bay two?” Isra looked around her. “This is the bigger of the two bays, we could use this for the triage area, and would still give enough room for the alert craft to land, with the help of force fields. So they don’t have to worry about transporting people from the other bay.” She hoped she was making sense. Thinking on her feet this early in the morning was not something she was used to. “That is sensible. The last thing patients will want is to have to move all the way across the ship and then back again.” “Easier on the medical staff too if they don’t have to be two places. This way they can all be here and not have to be short handed because some have to be in the other bay.” She was glancing around her as they spoke, already forming a plan of action in her head. Ire nodded. “Well it looks like you have everything in hand here. I’ll leave you to get on with it. " Good morning let's get started, before you, is a complete read out of a region of space in sector 04-70 in the alpha quadrant known as the badlands. We have been ordered to go there. All of you have received a complete update on our current mission. Our most recent analysis of the badlands shows a substantial increase of plasma storms and the plasma tornadoes associated with them. " Ravok said as he zoomed the holographic image in on one of the plasma tornadoes. " Like tornadoes in an M class atmosphere, they hop around sporadically , the smallest can have rotational speeds of 25,000 to 40,000 kilometers an hour , some of the largest have rotational speeds of 600,000 kilometers to over 800,000 kilometers an hour." Ravok looked at Erin. "There are also strong Gravimetric eddies, currents if you will, that we will need to navigate. For The Exeter, she's a big ship but she's fast and maneuverable. We need to make sure our sensors are operating at peak efficiency. We will be feeding the data to the Conn. In addition to this, there are several M class planets in the badlands. If memory serves, the region contained 2 stars, 17 planets and 43 moons, three of which were class M, and a large asteroid belt. A lot to be aware of and a lot for us to do. Ladies, Gents, we arrive at 1300 hours." Erin nodded to Ravok and smiled. Ravok dismissed the holographic display and held his PADD up to read off orders. Size, power etc. Take whomever you need." “Yes sir.” he replied quickly. Adala had opted to stand in the back of the gathered group and leaned against the wall while the Lieutenants outlined each groups assignments. She nodded at David as they were assigned together and moved in his direction. ~ Oh this is going to be fun ~ she thought to herself, the tone in her head very sarcastic. It wasn't going to be fun at all, she knew about the eddies, flows and tornadoes within the badlands. Trying to plot the locations of the storms was going to be ... interesting. "Understood, will get right on it." “Any problems, contact myself or Lieutenant Ravok." He saw Erin looked around the room at the assembled staff and smiled, "We can get this done. Less than three hours everyone. Let's get to it." " Dismissed" The room began to clear as he heard Ravok and Erin speak to each other as they left. " Good luck Lieutenant " "You too, Lieutenant." They left, leaving just him and Adala. “Well this is definitely going to be different than looking through the historical archives.” Adala shook her head. "No kidding. This isn't how I wanted to see the badlands. Where do you suggest we start?" David shrugged. “Guess we should the most resent sensor data that we have and have a look at it.” He motioned to the large wall spanning screen. “Let’s get to it then.” she said as she moved towards the large screen. “Something tells me we’ll be living on caffeine and adrenaline for a while.” “I get the feeling we are going to be more busy when we arrive feeding information to Ops and the Conn.” He quickly entered the instructions into the main console and the image of the badlands appeared. He stared at it for a moment. “This is going to harder then I thought. Meteorology was never a passion.” Adala motioned to the screen and began pointing out various areas. “These are the areas which are the highest density and probably should be avoided if we are able.” she then pointed to a couple of what appeared to be planetary bodies. “These could be useful, follow their path or as close as possible?” David looked at the information that Adala had put up and nodded. “That would make sense as the fact that there are planets there in the first place would mean that they are in a stable area.” he gave a slight sigh. “But that would also mean that this person we are trying to capture will also know that.” Adala nodded and frowned. “David … I hope you don’t mind me using your first name?” she pointed out a trail which led around a couple of the planets. “They might know, yes. But we can put that to use. I have a couple aces up my sleeve with my knowledge of rocks. Each rock has its own density, they would and could affect the gravimetric eddies around them.” “That makes sense and if we can at least see what the plasma storms are like in quieter areas then that might also help where it is worse.” Adala looked at the screen and tapped a couple of buttons. The holographic display changed as she did and the screen now showed various dense areas. “These are the current storms, but maybe we can use the holodeck to run a few simulations to see a time lapse? What do you think?” David nodded. “Yes that would help to see what their predicted movements would be and see how they relate to what is actually happening.” “What do you say we head for the holodeck and get this happening? I can get a hold of the Lieutenants and let them know what we’re up to.” “Yes, that is a good plan.” He glanced at the chronometer on the wall. “ We better get going, Tempus fugit.” he said with a grin. Adala nodded and tapped the console, the holographic display darkening. “Let’s do it.” She tapped her combadge as they headed out of stellar cartog and towards the holodeck. “Ensigns Michaels and Clarke to Lieutenant Cortez and Ravok, we’re heading for the holodeck to run a couple of simulations. “ (reply Cortez and Ravok) Adala and David moved through the corridors, discussing options. The trip to the holodeck didn’t take long. They stepped through the door and Adala tapped the console setting up a simulation. The area around them changed from the stark hologrid to the badlands, eddies and storms raging around them. “Lets see what we can come up with.” “Okay computer plot the paths of the storms and eddies. Using historical data project their paths for the next twenty four hours.” He watched as the image changed. “Progress to 48 hours.” He watched as the lines of the storms and eddies moved across the image. “Okay progress to one week.” He kept looking at the image trying to understand the information he was looking at. “Well it looks like these three storm fronts will be moving rather fast across this area. Hopefully we can avoid those but these major eddies looks worrying as these other storms are going to sweep by them.” “I think we’ll have to take our chances with some of the lesser storms and eddies. Otherwise the path will take too long.” She pointed to a couple of areas. “We could follow this path or use the gravitational fields around these two.” Pointing to two other planetary bodies. “To slingshot us through the worst of them?” “We would have to make sure that we would not get too close or we would get pulled in by them.” “Computer plot as course using the Exeter’s parameters along the gravitational fields around point gamma echo five and charlie alpha six.” He watched as the icon of the Exeter moved along the path and past the two gravitational fields.” it would be close very, very close. “It looks like it might work. Hopefully our pilot is good enough.” “David, that was only the first run. There are a couple other areas I want to try, to see if they are any better.” Adala talked while pointing to two different areas of the simulation that swirled around them. “What about those two areas? What do you think?” David looked at what Adala was showing him and nodded. “Yes that way would be better but it depends how fast we want to get there. The first way has more risk but is faster, the other there is less risk but slower and that one takes us a very long detour.” Adala nodded “Let’s try them both and see what happens. Then pass our findings off to the Lieutenants? See what they have to say?” She paused and looked thoughtful. “Unless you can think of anything else. I am sorry, I sort of took over.’ David nodded. “The sensible option would not to go in there in the first place.” he gave a slight smile. “Yes show them what we have and see what they feel we should look at in more detail. It would be helpful to know in what area they are wanting to start?” Adala laughed. “That would be the best option, but we have a job to do.” She tapped a a panel on the padd she always carried with her and stored the information from their holodeck simulations and added it to what she had saved from stellar cartog. “I will send this to them, and I guess we cross our fingers?” “I don’t think it will be that easy. I am sure they are going to want us in stellar cartography given them up to date information on our way there and when we arrive.” She nodded “Let’s go.” she paused in the arch and tapped a few buttons, the scene around them fading once again to the stark hologrid and the door opening. “Do you think we can stop past a replicator on the way I have a feeling this is going to be a Raktajno day?” Adala laughed. “This is going to be a multiple Raktajjino day David, for sure. Let’s go.” Adala and David arrived back at stellar cartography after passing by the replicator to collect their Raktajino’s. He looked at the large screen again and sipped his coffee mulling everything over. “I guess we could launch some probes when we arrive to get some real time telemetry. We might risk losing them but it might help plotting whichever course the Captain wants us to go.” “That makes sense. How about we just not go at all?” She was nervous, but hadn’t shown it … much. He looked at her as he sipped his coffee. He took that moment to think about his answer. “That would be good for us but you got the information that the Lieutenants gave us on that Bajoran has already attacked shipping and managed to get one of ours. If we don’t stop him, who knows what other horrors he is likely to do.” He paused again. “Don’t get me wrong I would like nothing happier than sitting in my lab crunching dates but as my classmate used to say ‘once you put on the uniform you can’t pick and choose which responsibilities you want. Or something like that she would go on and on with tangents.” he gave a slight grin. Adala frowned and nodded. “I know David, I know what putting on the uniform means. I know we need to get this guy. My duty is to this ship and crew first, myself last of all.” She sipped her coffee and hefted the padd in the other hand. “Shall we pass this along, see what other hoops they want us to jump through?” She said trying to lighten the mood a little. David nodded. “Yes lets we can give them something to think about.” He paused for a moment. “Ship, crew, self is a good mantra but remember if there is no self then there is no crew and if there is no crew there is no ship.” Adala tapped the Padd and gathered all the information into one file. “That’s why I climb cliffs, that’s the self part of the mantra.” She spoke as she sent the file to the Lieutenants. “Now we wait.” “You rock climb? Isn't that rather dangerous?” “Yes I do and it’s probably less dangerous than what we’re about to do.” (Reply Erin and Ravok IYW) (Posted by Kathleen and Robbie)(SPC David Clarke) (USS Exeter - Sickbay - Ens JG Doctor Katie Jamison (spc) - 10:40) Katie shook her head at the CMOs question. "Lt, you said you had the recent scans, do you want to share them?" Janey said as she moved across to the small replicator and pulled out a drink. Handing her the PADD, Erin couldn't get a read on the woman. Whether she was just like this all the time or if it was her. "Seems the plasma density is rising slightly so I am open to ideas for boosting the sensor power and efficiency. " Sipping her drink Janey looked at the data. ~open or not that's what we're here to do~ "the badlands are notorious for sensor ghosts, during the wars the Marquis used it to their advantage many a time, that's why we went in with smaller ships; less to hide and less to hide from." Janey looked at the screen and brought up the current sensor information. "I don't think boosting is the right idea Lt, if we used a narrower scan frame, focus the sensors in smaller, more frequent areas, rather than a large field at once we could filter out the plasma radiation, give the computer multiple smaller frames of reference." She started to show an example on the screen. Nodding, Erin watched the woman work. She knew that she wasn't the best at this side of things. ~Give me an ancient culture or a language and I can disseminate it easily.~ she thought to herself. "We used it on the Paladin, we were searching for a missing shuttle and only had a small reference point to work with so had the computer constantly mapping out the area rather than just every few seconds. I suppose in this case, we are scanning Infront of our nose, rather than outstretched hands" "Okay, so would you suggest programming a pattern in that allows us to map the area quickly and efficiently?" She asked. Janey laughed, not out of disregard but just the situation. "You've never been to the badlands have you?" "Does it show?" Erin asked. Ignoring the response Janey continued "It's an ever changing area of space, almost impossible to map. No what we would be doing is looking for things that keep moving, alternating. Needle in a haystack scenario I'm afraid. You can map all you want but unless you know your way, unless you have markers, a point of reference you're going to be lost. What we need to do is get the sensors to focus on a pinpoint and work around from that. What I'm suggesting is create one reference point then lay a new one on top, then keep going. Eventually the computer would be able to focus on what was there and then what isnt. We need to filter out the ghosts." "I see. So how do we do that?" Erin replied, aware that her lack of knowledge was showing. "You're the scientist, you tell me." Janey was showing her annoyance her frustration at not being able to work this out on her own. Moments like this she missed her old crew mates, people that had spent years in their fields earned their ranks, earned their positions; not kids right out of the Academy. "Let's break it down" Janey picked up a few tools from her kit and threw them into the table "this spanner is the Exeter, the coupler, regenerator and phase modifier are the three ships we're looking for. They are smaller, more manouverable than we are, they know the land. We can get a fix on them but when the winds, for want of a better word, change we loose them." Janey picked up a PADD and put it Infront of the spanner blocking the line of sight and removed the coupler and moving it beside the spanner. "See, but if we could get a system that continued to scan the area, a frame of reference we would know that something had changed. Then focus a more traditional scan on that area, we could know what. I'm guessing in a way we need to tag it?" Janey finished her drink "That's it. We need to paint the target so to speak." Erin replied. "Now, it's how we do this." "Part of the problem, don't forget the ghosts, see that coupler, it's a sensor blip doesn't exist, the real ship has been tailing us closing off our escape route, sitting just outside of sensor range waiting for the right moment." Janey slammed the cup down onto the spanner "more death" The slam made Erin jump slightly. Taking a breath, she looked at the woman, "More death? That's quite a view… but, now you mention it… I wonder if there is anyway to expand the sensor range, give us more of a fighting chance?" "It's not a view, it's a fact; one that your pips and your uniform won't protect you from. Believe me, space is not like the academy." Janey sighed "A probe?" "Oh believe me I know. You have no idea how much I know that." Erin sighed. "Yes a probe. Something that we can equip with some defence somehow or it can 'paint the target'" "How could we extend the reach of the probe to introduce the tagging? Once tagged we can get a full scan and know if it's a sensor ghost or not, how do you mean paint?" Janey felt a little flame inside she spun to face the console and brought up the shield specs. "Maybe an isotope that we can scan for…. Or some form of electronic tagging device? Something that I could stick to the hull of the ship? As for the how… I'm not sure. Could we adapt a probe to shoot out something that would attach itself to the ship or ghost per se?" Erin pondered, her mind whirring with the possibilities and the time frame they had. "It needs to be simple, it can be basic but functional. We can't think too complex in this case. In nature pheromones are used to tag prey, subsonic, echo, sticky visible." Janey looked up and the screen again and back to Erin. "Infrared, tags, visible, we need to light them up. We can get around all the issues in the badlands of we just have somthing visible to focus on, somthing that jumps out." Janey pounded her fist in the table knocking over a fresh glass. "Are we not being literal enough?" "Simplicity is key. They won't be expecting simple. Low tech so to speak." Erin replied. "Think about it. They're gonna expect all guns blazing, fire fight. Why do that when we can just tag them and take them out easily, quickly and safely?" Janey looked at the young woman and her mind went back to the days with Ash, the pair of them theorising different ideas fighting the world with their brains. "Look, Erin, I'm sorry." Janey looked at her with the motherly, kind face she used to have, the shadows of the past weighing hard on her. "I've been off with you today it's just a difficult thing. Seeing all you young ones running around trying to save the world with your ideas; it's just you reminded me so much of where I came from, so much of what I'm missing in life. All this, it's my past, it everything I used to have. I'm an old woman running out of usefulness, brushing past the years that I have left…." "You should try having people stare at you, knowing that they don't see you, they see the evil that inhabited you… they see the bad you did whilst not yourself and the look of pity… " Erin paused a second. "Sorry…. I didn't mean to… look, we're similar you and I. Both trying to find our place in a world that doesn't quite understand us. Let's show them what we can do. Young and experienced together, right?" Janey took hold of Erin's hands. She looked down at the difference between them, wrinkles and smooth. "This isn't my world, I'm back to a desk job outliving my usefulness. I'm experienced, but, technology everything is changing. You're kind, but call it what it is, old." Janey rubbed the woman's hands and felt the friction "That's it, we don't need to paint them, mark them, we just need to light them up rub against them. If we could configure the probe to interfere with their shields in a way that would set them off, the sensors could keep layering that information and we wouldn't ever loose them. I mean we need to find them but a probe would be practically unidentifiable in the badlands, it's too small to show off against the eddies….we light them up like a touchpaper." Janey let go of Erin's hands and grabbed her "we did it Ash!" "Erin…. But I take that as a compliment. " she responded. Smiling, Erin looked at her, "see, still useful. Me, not so much but I'll get there. One day." Janey smiled "you're the Cheif Science officer, that is an accomplishment. I remember reading something when you were in nappies that could help. Computer bring up the logs from the USS Sovereign and the rescue of the USS Dauntless." As the longs flashed she saw what she needed. "There, they marked the escape pods with a electromagnetic pulse so they could be found. If we adapted the probe to do the same we could use the EM algorithm to flash their shields letting us focus the sensors on them. If it was a sensor ghost there would be nothing to read, otherwise we've got them. So come on, how?" "Then we do the same. An EM pulse…. Wait …. " Erin paused for a moment, her mind whirring. "We have two hours at most to adapt four or more probes…. Can we do it? And how… can we programme the probes to EMT an em burst once they focus on a particular target? Say. . The hull materials of the ships?" "We have the schematics of the ships don't we? We know what they're made of, programme them to seek out durainium and titanium turn them into a giant metal detector. Honey, unless they want to be eating cold food and not being able to use rheirny sonic showers for a month these guys will make the time to get it done. Up the pressure, you're talking to an engineer, time is merely an illusion. We just need to make sure we get it right, or rather you do…..you're the scientist." Janey jumped up "to the torpedo bay." "I may be a scientist… " Erin paused, ".. I hope we are doing the right thing here. We have no time for a test run. We need to make this work, Chief. It has to work." Janey laughed as she stood at the door "I've been in tighter spots, hope has nothing to do with it kid!" They left.
