Off that list there’s three listed as computer specialist, two listed as core engineers, plus anyone of them could have been in the Ops control yesterday. Also as much as I hate to admit it they may not be recent arrivals.” Arbor kept making notes on his PADD as he listened to Sleeford. “I understand.” "If there's anything else Ensign, feel free to come back and if anything, else comes to mind I'll come to security and report it." “That would be appreciated and thank you very much for you time.” Arbor stepped out into the corridor and began to walk towards the Security department. “Lleria, I am uploading my PADD to you?” =^= Yes Arbor…..Got it. You have to talk to Lieutenant Alexander in 30 minutes=^= “Would you mind scanning my notes before passing them into Ensign More.” =^= What am I your personal secretary=^= “No you are my partner and as we work as a team it is good for both of us have the same information.” =^=Ow Arbor you are too easy to wind up. He was then violently sick down the toilet. Wiping his mouth he shakerley looked at himself in the mirror. ~ Come on Stan. Pull it together. ~ He thought. He was on the verge of calling the counsellor’s office. But stopped himself. No, he was in the middle of an investigation. He had to be able to get over some stress. He left the bathroom and ordered a glass of ice cold water. Drinking it he sat down. “ More to Oliver Wallis come in please.” Stan said =^=Wallis here. How can I help you=^= “ Sorry to bother you. I need to speak with you. What would be the best place and time for you?” Stan asked. =^=I am free now. Where do you want to meet=^= Stan sipped his drink. “ What about the Operations Department Office On Deck 13?” Stan said =^=That is fine I will head over there now=^= Stan nodded then he tapped his comm. badge again. “ More to Zot come in please.” Stan said =/\= Ensign Zot at your service =/\= “ I have arranged to meet Wallis on Deck 13 at the Operations Department Office. Can you join me?” =/\= Certainly Ensign More. When?=/\= “ About now, “ He said. =/\= Acknowledged Ensign More. I will find you soon=/\= ( USS Exeter - Deck 13 - Operations Department Office - Ens.(Sg) Stan More - Ens.(Sg) Zot - Ops Officer Oliver Wallis - 19:20 ) Oliver walked up to the Operations Department Office paused for a moment before entering. He took a seat at the desk and waited for the others to arrive. Stan arrived next and smiled as he entered the office. More had completely forgotten to ask Paul. If they could use his office. He hoped his friend Sleeford would not mind them holding the meeting here. More would secretly explain to his friend. About Zot’s discovery. “ Sorry to keep yer waiting. Zot is on his way while we wait. Perhaps we could have a drink? I take it this office has a replicator? Oliver nodded. “Yes it's over there. Help yourself but I am okay for now thanks.” Nodding Stan ordered a glass of cold iced water and sat down. Zot entered the room. " Hello Ensign Wallis "said Zot as he nodded his head to him then turned to Stan. " Ensign More, I am here as requested. I see you are practicing hydration methods. Did you know that lack of proper hydration can lead to imbalances in the brain and contribute to a plethora of issues?" “Okay.” “ Aye something to wet my whistle.” Stan said They both looked at him. “ Just a human figure of speech.” Stan said " We Eunepians have an organ called the Dolokop which is similar to a bladder but allows us to store water in our bodies to provide proper hydration if a viable source of liquid water is not readily available. A chemical produced by our bodies called Kerin B keeps the water in our Dolokops from becoming stagnant and unsanitary " Zot said happily “That is interesting. Never knew that.” Stan nodded and after another sip looked at Oliver. “ Ok. I want to cast your mind back to the day of Nix’s murder. Who was working on this deck that day?” Stan asked Oliver looked over at Zot and then back to More. “I am not sure. I was on the morning shift working over there.” He pointed at another desk in the corner. Stan turned and looked at the table. There was a computer terminal sitting on it. “ Were you there all morning?” Stan asked He paused for a moment. “Yes I was here apart from 1230 to 1300 when I went to the Dine to Nine for some lunch.” “ So from 12:30 to 13:00 you were not here.Any Idea who was?” Stan asked Oliver paused and looked over at Zot. “Well for the duty shift there was me, crewman Anderson and chief Peters but that doesn't mean that others could not have entered while I was gone. I am sure the Ops logs would give you a more accurate idea of who was there while I was out.” Zot stepped forward and raised his hand. " I began my diagnostic at 1625. I am sure Ensign More's next action was to check the duty roster for beta shift " Zot said hoping to hint at Stan what the next move should be. Stan gave Zot a big smile. He was about to say that. He was beginning to like Zot. “ Yes, that was to be my next move. Ensign Zot could you do the honours please,” Stan said " Good Idea Ensign More I will check the duty roster of beta shift and their areas of designation." Zot responded cheerfully as he approached a terminal. " Hello Computer, please display all on duty operations personnel during beta shift on Stardate 2445.12.01 to my location" [ Acknowledged] As the duty roster appeared on the screen Zot shortened the list to all personnel who were assigned to deck 13 during beta shift. " I would analyze these crew members." Zot said to both of them as he backed up and pointed to the screen. Stan eyes scanned the screen. “ Some of these people I have not heard of Trujillo , Brown isn't Kervik Ravok’s cousin?” He asked “We have had a few new replacements that had been assigned to us.” Zot nodded his head in an assuring manner to Stan. " According to our records Petty officer Kervik is the maternal cousin of Lieutenant Ravok. " Now Stan realised why Ravok looked so tired. This investigation was a nightmare. There were absolutely no leads. None of these people could of been capable of murder. Unless some murderous corporeal being had entered their body’s. But that was so far fetched he fiked that thought away. “ When you came back to this terminal. Who was closest to it. That had not been before you left it?” He asked Oliver Oliver paused for a moment as he thought. “Um lets see Dalius was heading out of Ops when I left as he was going on his break. That left Glover and Jones…..Glover was the closest when I walked in but he was talking to Jones who was also nearby. They were both facing away from the terminal looking at the monitor on the wall. They were discussing how to deal with a power fluctuating on deck 4.” “ Officers quarters and Holosuites. Holosuites….. where is Ensign Glover now?” Stan asked " Ensign Glover is currently assigned to hydroponics control on Deck 11 according to today's staffing report " Ensign Zot informed Stan. “ and Jones?” More asked " Ensign Franklin Jones is currently assigned to waste management on Deck 19." Zot answered “ Oliver what was the reason for the power fluctuations on deck four?” Stan asked “I was incontact with Ensign Vozi who was working on the situation. It looked like we had been supplied with a set of faulty components which when fitted overloaded the area in deck four. From what I was told, it was a manufacturing issue due to the fact that we have been pushing the maintenance schedule hard since launch as well as since our return. Also that the federation had increased its manufacturing process exponentially over the last couple of years to deal with the launches. It looks like that the component somehow got past the screenings and was loaded on board the ship. They are doing random spot checks to see if there are any more that may have gotten into our replacements stocks.” “ I see “ Stan mused. Something about that did not feel correct. Surely Starfleet’s manufacturing core would make absolutely sure. Everything was working properly before letting it go. “ What happened to this component?” Stan asked “Vozi has taken it back to Engineering to run some tests on it.” “ So it should be with Ensign Vozi? “ Stan asked “Yes it should still be with him.” “ Interesting. Tell me about Ensign Vozi. Have you spoken to them before?” Stan asked “I have only spoken to him a couple of times when our work crossed over or when we were in the mess hall. He is an efficient competent engineer but is more on the taker apart then fixing things which is why I guess he’s a cracker. Um before joining the fleet he worked on an orbital disposal yard where he would brakeships appart. Which is where I guess he found his enjoyment of things going bang.” Stan was not feeling too great. His hands felt clammy and his forehead felt cold. He needed to end the interview. “Well Oliver thank you for being cooperative. Would it be ok if Zot could just give your computer terminal a look over?” Stan asked Oliver nodded. “Not a problem.” Zot opened a secure link to Oliver's terminal files. After entering a few commands he could see the interfaces Oliver had used over the past few days. " Ensign Wallis didn't use his terminal or any for that matter to access anything outside of his duty assignments. " Zot said as he used the data link. " I do have an Idea." “ Zot would you like to explain? ” Stan asked. " I could inspect all the terminals in section C1 ,retrace every bit of code and determine which one was definitively used to connect with security systems. " Zot explained “ So we need to examine a possible access point. Anyway I need to assess this information plus speak with my colleagues.” He said standing. If you could let me know your findings Zot. " I will keep you informed." Zot responded “ Once again thanks for your help.”He said (Reply , Oliver , Zot) (USS Exeter - Ready Room - CO, Captain Trip Williams, FO, Commander Ailynn Bracken, CEO/2O, Lt. Commander Keira Merek, CTO/3O Lt. SG Ravok Shara, Chief Counselor, Lt. JG Victoria Corsica - 2000) Trip looked at the assembled officers and sighed. “Okay, so we know that at least one person is not who they say they are. And we know we have three assailants. What we don’t know is if those other two people have also been swapped with someone else. Perhaps mercenaries hired by the visitor to protect them. Either that or we have two rogue Starfleet Officers.” “Body swaps, Rogue Officers…” Ailynn sighed. “...the frak is going on?” she said, mostly to herself, expressing her irritability at the entire situation. She however fell immediately silent as Trip continued speaking. “Lieutenant Corsica, you’re the head counselor here and an empath. Without violating any professional rules of ethics, have you encountered any crew members over the last three days who just haven’t seemed like themselves. Behaving oddly, out of character, things of that nature” Victoria took a moment to ponder, emotions had been high the last two days, rumors were everywhere. To keep her own sanity Corsica had kept to herself and her work. Keeping wild emotions away from her privy. “You don’t have to answer right away, you can take some time to process.” She answered softly reserved, "No I haven't but if I haven't been close enough to any of those involved it would be more difficult for me to pick up on anything." “Lieutenant Ravok, your briefings have indicated that you and Ensign Hammerfield are attempting to lure out one of the suspects. Keep going on that task. Let me know how it pans out." " Ensign Hammerfield is currently setting up. Ensign T'kel is assisting Sir. We are hoping to have successful results in a few hours." Ravok replied. “Also keep me apprised of Ensign More’s investigation. Feel free to lend him a hand if you think you need it.” Ravok nodded " Aye Sir." “Commander Merek, while I can’t release the logs to you, by order of Starfleet JAG, I may have pulled small snippets of audio from the logs, the voices of the assailants. Not full phrases. Just disconnected words here and there. The male assailants did not use anything to disguise their voice, see what you can do by running a voice analysis and figure out who they are. Bring in Ensign Sleeford and Lieutenant Cortez on this one.” "Does this mean Lt. Cortez is off the hook?" Keira probed. "Yes and no. Lt. Cortez is not a person of interest insofar as we believe her to be who she says she is. But we don't know if she is who she says she is. Figure that out and yeah she's clean." "In the spirit of how we've done so here, I have a few ways of doing that." Keira answered. “I also have the distorted audio of the visitor, Commander Bracken, get with Lt. Williams on this one, have him plug into his AI, Aunty Colerdige or whatever she is called. See if you can’t undistort the audio and give us a better chance of at least identifying whether the visitor is inhabiting a male or female body.” Ailynn nodded, this was not her field. She was an exceptional physical Practitioner of Medicine, but she would always be amongst the first to admit that she was far from the most technical. “On it.” She replied simply. It didn’t need more, however a moment later, she added more. “I need you to pick a selection of common words, but if you can, a couple of less common ones if they exist in the recording you have, sometimes the way that people use a less familiar word is just as indicative.” “I’d also like you to reach out to your mom. They used fast acting paralyzing nanites that dissolve. See if this tech exists in our universe, who has access to it, and who is smart enough to make it.” “Concur.” She nodded. “I’ll set up a secure line with her straight after this.” She didn’t add any more to this, she fell into reflective silence as Trip continued speaking. “Lastly, as I mentioned when talking about Lt. Cortez, I have all of you working with different personnel who may be the visitor. We don’t know. See if you can’t try and figure out if they really are who they say they are, without revealing anything about the body swap. This is a matter of utmost secrecy. If this gets out, I will consider it a major security breach, there will be a full investigation, and if I find out that any of you leaked it, your further service on the Exeter will no longer be required. Is that understood?” "Aye." Keira said succinctly, knowing full well the gravity of what she was just told. " Yes sir." Ravok said. “Aye Skip.” Ailynn nodded, answering Trip after Ravok had. Her mind was already halfway onto her next two tasks, the first being an extremely secure communique with the Fleet Surgeon General. Corsica nodded, "Understood." “Now then, any questions?” Keira shook her head in the negative. " In light of everything we have just learned. I ask that we for the sake of the people on ship , move to a heightened alert status. Essential movement around the ship only. We know that Commander Tyko Nix was specifically targeted and why, but the assailants are unaware of the knowledge we have. This action would not only serve to protect the people on this vessel but also keep the assailants in the dark on the intelligence you have collected Sir." Ravok said. “As to your request Lieutenant Ravok, it is denied. By moving to a heightened alert status it may indicate to the assailants that we are closing in and that we might have gained knowledge that puts them more in the crosshairs. I’d rather them be complacent as they are more likely to make a mistake that way. We will remain at yellow alert, with no heightened security provisions. Once the assailants have been identified, we can revisit that request. Until then, I’d rather not tip any of our pitches to our friends. A rat is more likely to feel threatened if they are cornered. I'm more worried that our personnel are at risk if we make the assailants feel threatened and as if the walls are closing in, than perhaps they would be if they feel they are free to move. Right now we know they targeted Commander Tyko, specifically because he was getting too close. Who is to say that following that modus operandi, they might not do the same if they feel threatened again. I feel that our people are safer with them being as much in the dark as possible, since the only violent actions we have on record from the visitor is when they were close to being stopped and discovered.” " Understood." Ravok said begrudgingly. Ailynn drew a breath. “Agreed, one thing stands” she spoke, looking at all of them, “whether by their action, or by their instigation and planning, whatever shape or sex they are, the main perp can be considered exceptionally dangerous. It can be assumed that they can and or will kill again. Regardless of apparent advantages you may think you or we have, If...no...when we find this culprit, do not...under any circumstances...tackle them yourself.” She paused. “I don’t like doing surgery on friends.” “Makes sense. No one is allowed to engage the perpetrators without a phaser and at least two tactical officers present. You are also cleared to stun the perpetrators as they are to be considered a flight risk. However you can only do so after first announcing who you are, that you have them cornered, what they are being accused of, a formal declaration of arrest, and that they are to stand down. After that, if they run, fire away.” " Understood " Ravok simply responded. Ailynn nodded, “Agreed. Understood.” Victoria listened as she had learned to do for so much of her life. Being a counselor and diplomat required her to read the room and pick out what was needed to ascertain a certain outcome. So far she agreed with what had been discussed. It seemed prudent to play it safe and not tip our hand. But there was still something that was bugging her. "Please Captain, can you clarify something for me. You want me to go visit with the crew and see if I can pick up on something to smoke out one of the people involved? I don't mean to be rude just want it to be clear on what's expected of me." "No smoking out Lieutenant. I just want you to be observant. You aren't bait if that is what you're afraid of. But since you have a expert level grasp on, for lack of a better term, the human condition, if you keep your eyes and ears open, who knows. Maybe you'll find something." Corsica nodded in agreement to the Captain's comments. It seemed she would be of more use if she got out a bit more, interacted with the crew more. "Alright then, you all have your orders." Trip then looked at Ailynn, and with a nod indicated that he wanted her to stay behind after the briefing. "Be thorough, be discreet. Dismissed." Matting his dark hair against his head. As Stan ran on higher and higher. His chest began to hurt as he forced more air into his lungs. Thistles the national flower of his homeland cruelly whipped at his legs. As he pushed himself further and further up the hill. ~ Zot tilted his head " Everyone struggles in their way ~ More stumbled as he ran on. The drizzling rain made the surface slippery. He swore but managed to keep up wright. More was tempted to tell the computer to reduce the weather conditions. But no. He had asked for this highland running route. There were things going on inside his head. He’s recent emotional breakdown. Plus the investigation was not going as he liked. One minute it looked like a clue had been found. Like the computer core had been tampered with, before it was installed. ~ Zot shook his head. " The personnel responsible for the initial calibration and activation of the cores are not currently assigned to this ship. Had there been an error or issue with the programming Starfleet Headquarters would have detected it and launch of the ship would have been delayed until the operational parameters were corrected and up to launch standards " Zot informed hIm ~ Only to find it was a dead end. It was like a juicy red apple was growing on a tree. But no matter how high you climbed. It just got further out of reach. Plus he had lost contact with Sytuk. ~ Someone knew when Zot was performing his diagnostic. That’s when they tampered with the computer. We traced the problem to a terminal on deck 13.......~ Stan thought Slowly he pulled himself to the top of Ben Lomond. The drizzling rain had petered out. To reveal the view below of Loch Lomond itself. He could see a boat being pushed out from the bank. The water of the Loch was dark reflecting the sky above. To be honest sounds like something another engineer I know would do " He said laughing. Janice’s vision didn’t leave Ravok for a moment, “That would be right. That’s my girl,” Hide original message " What modifications did you make ?" He put his hand up " Now this isn't an investigation. I'm just asking out of curiosity. " “You’ll find that they are mostly to help with technical tasks,” she continued, “A rotational lens system helps mode selection between standard fire, flare, welding, cutting and heating. You’d be surprised how often I’ve had to use them. Nothing that’s going to blow a hole in the side of the ship if that’s what you’re worried about.” Janice lifted up her tea and took a small sip from it. Asking questions about her personal weapon and saying its not part of an investigation when a killer is onboard – she wasn’t buying that the inquiry was benign as Ravok made out it was. She would likely be doing something similar if she was still in security. (reply Ravok) “Id be happy to let you take a shot or two with it when we have the murder apprehended,” she added. (reply Ravok) (USS Exeter – Science Labs – CTO/30 Lieutenant Ravok – 2229) “You’ll find that they are mostly to help with technical tasks,” she continued, “A rotational lens system helps mode selection between standard fire, flare, welding, cutting and heating. You’d be surprised how often I’ve had to use them. Nothing that’s going to blow a hole in the side of the ship if that’s what you’re worried about.” Ravok laughed. " To be honest after the day I've had ,blowing a hole in the side of the ship would just be the cherry on a cake. Although the captain would probably go ballistic " he said letting his laughter die off. The brief overview given was in line with the modification notes made by Ensign T'kel. “Id be happy to let you take a shot or two with it when we have the murder apprehended,” she added. " I know as head of security I shouldn't admit this , but I am a terrible shot with a phaser. Even though I'm a romulan, I'm pretty decent with a bat'leth . " He remarked. (Reply hammerfield) " I learned from my step mother, shes klingon and a remarkable Engineer, but she would consider the word remarkable as a drastic understatement of her abilities." He said with a smile. ( reply Hammerfield) ( replies Hammerfield) (USS Exeter – Science Labs – Ensign Janice Hammerfield – 2230) "I know as head of security I shouldn't admit this , but I am a terrible shot with a phaser. Even though I'm a romulan, I'm pretty decent with a bat'leth . " He remarked. "Understood,” she nodded, “I thought you might go for something more traditionally Romulan. Its an odd thing to pick up on. I can only imagine you must have had some interest in it?” Hide original message "I learned from my step mother, shes klingon and a remarkable Engineer, but she would consider the word remarkable as a drastic understatement of her abilities." He said with a smile. “I would never have guessed. I’m sure I pale in comparison so ill settle with competent until I can work up to remarkable,” she smiled back, “I don’t imagine you are just here for the chit chat though. Is there something you needed some help with at all?” Janice sat her tea back down on the table and pulled a small tool out of her engineering kit. She gave it a wave over the device in front of her and the lights on it turned on. (reply Ravok) (USS Exeter – Science Labs – Ensign Janice Hammerfield – 2232) Ravok shook his head. " No Ensign, you have already been a great help to the investigation so far. Ensign T'kel has spoken highly of your involvement." Ravok leaned forward. " And that means something coming from such a...stoic man." Ravok said with a hushed tone. Janice raised her eyebrow in an almost Vulcan fashion, “Well that is good to know,” " Alright Ensign Hammerfield, I won't keep you any longer. Just know that if you need anything my department is here for you. " He said to her. "Of course sir that’s good to know,” she smile and nodded back politely, “have a good night,” Hide original message " Goodnight Ensign" Ravok concluded and walked out of the lab. Waiting till the door closed Janice sat back into her seat a bit and mumbled, “That was... peculiar,” After a moment of contemplation she waved into the other room, “Mister T’kel – can I borrow you a moment please?” Janice couldn’t help but feel something was out of place there. Maybe it was normal or it could be a mind case of her own sleep deprived paranoia. It didn’t help knowing that she willingly painted a giant target on her back tonight. (reply T’kel) She waved him closer into earshot so she could whisper, “Was that normal?” (reply T’kel) “Well I mean – did that look like normal behaviour for him?” she asked. (reply T’kel) “He said you spoke to him of my involvement in the investigation. You didn’t mention any of the details for it did you? That was to stay between us,” she paused, “Did you speak to him at all?” (reply T’kel) (USS Exeter – Science Labs – SPC Sec/tac Ensign T'kel – 2234) “Mister T’kel – can I borrow you a moment please?”Ensign Hammerfield asked. T'kel walked out of his position and approached her. She waved him closer into earshot so she could whisper, “Was that normal?” He stepped closer to her , with his arms folded behind his back and raised an eyebrow. " The head of security personally checking on members of the crew? " He asked. “Well I mean – did that look like normal behaviour for him?” she asked. With a slight tilt of his head he took a breath. " I have observed that Lieutenant Ravok is rather friendly among the crew. He's.. "T'kel paused to think of the word. " Jovial, he exhibits behavior unusual for a Romulan." “He said you spoke to him of my involvement in the investigation. You didn’t mention any of the details for it did you? That was to stay between us,” she paused, “Did you speak to him at all?” " I did, However I did not give him the full details of your test. I told him that you were assisting me with the investigation and that we needed to use a science lab. He authorized my overtime status so that I could remain on duty. Doing so allowed me to be here to protect you. " T'kel ( reply Hammerfield) He looked at her. " I follow orders and follow procedure , but I will not compromise trust with a fellow officer. If you want to know about my assessment of you to him, I told him you were determined, resourceful, experienced and of logical and sound mind."
