Let’s do it. Firstly tell me everything you have so far.” Stan said " One dead Starfleet officer, 5 persons of interest, 19 interviews conducted so far with another 22 to be conducted in the next 7 hours. As far as details...I officially have none." Sytuk said. “ Ok. Why. Apart from the obvious that Nix was a complete barmpot. Why would anyone wish to harm him?” Stan said Sytuk looked at Ensign More. " As an intelligence officer he would have had access to sensitive information that could be beneficial or detrimental to a person, persons, perhaps even an entire star system. My past experiences before I joined Starfleet exposed me to the dirty side of their job. Intelligence officers obtain information from sources outside of their conventional reach on a consistent basis. Deals are made , threats are promised. Lies are spread. Lives are lost." Sytuk stopped and folded his arms across his chest. " Or perhaps he simply angered the wrong person." He said concluding his rant on his take of why someone would want to kill the commander. “ No. They would of looked into that already. This has to be someone or something from his past. Something that Nix did or didn’t do. That had someone out to end his life...... what do we know about his whereabouts during the occupation?” Stan asked. " The occupation of Bajor? To my knowledge the Commander was born in 2440, therefore he wouldn't have been alive since the occupation of Bajor ended in 2369. So it is safe to say the Cardassian occupation of Bajor had nothing to do with his death. I would think more... immediate. " Sytuk responded. ( reply More ) " If it were up to me I would stop this ship, lock everyone down and use whatever means necessary to find the identity of this alleged murderer...or murderers, but since the command staff of this ship insist on continuing to our destination. I would focus on what information could he have had to upset our current mission. I would also examine the crews service records. To see who had the required skills to effectively pull this off. " ( reply Stan) " True you no longer have access to a full service record but academic achievements and merits of starfleet officer's time in the academy are public knowledge. Their areas of study, their majors and minors. Also anything that set them apart from the standard cadet. As far as Enlisted the information is more vague and you would only have access to their qualifications. Nothing beyond that." Sytuk explained. ( reply Ensign More) (USS Exeter – Ensign More's Personal Quarters - Tac/Sec Ens.(Sg) Stan More- 11:26 ) Stan stood and stretched who moved over to the replicator slot. He gestured to Sytuk if he wanted anything. Getting a negative nod Stan ordered a mug of lemon tea. Then took his seat again sipping his drink. “ Och aye. But then again Bajorans can be like Klingons. When it comes to avenging crimes caused by other family members. Sins of the father become sins of the offspring. Mind you from what I have been hearing of my own family. Some humans behave the same way. But let’s shelve that theory for now.” Stan said " If it were up to me I would stop this ship, lock everyone down and use whatever means necessary to find the identity of this alleged murderer...or murderers, but since the command staff of this ship insist on continuing to our destination. I would focus on what information could he have had to upset our current mission. I would also examine the crews service records. To see who had the required skills to effectively pull this off. " “ We need to look into Nix’s service record. There has got to be a clue there. Och! I have been so stupid. If only I had not fallen on my own sword. I am limited to what I can get my mittens on.” Stan said angrily. " True you no longer have access to a full service record but academic achievements and merits of starfleet officer's time in the academy are public knowledge. Their areas of study, their majors and minors. Also anything that set them apart from the standard cadet. As far as Enlisted the information is more vague and you would only have access to their qualifications. Nothing beyond that." Sytuk explained. Stan looked at Sytuk then he clicked his fingers. “ So would the murderer!” Stan Said ( Reply , Sytuk ) “ I know. But what if Nix did something at the academy. That got him an award but screwed up someone else. Maybe this person never told their offspring. Why a life in Starfleet was denied them. Now this person is dead a vengeful relative could easily look this up. Discover who caused their families shame. Then “ Stan made a throat cutting gesture. ( Reply , Sytuk) (USS Exeter –Counselling Department – Counselor, Ensign SG Jack Roberts and CFO, Lieutenant SG Ire Williams - 1302) “I am here because I have been requested to see you due to the death of Lieutenant Nix.” "Well, its actually more just to check your mental stress due to the situation you are in. How are you feeling?" “I am sad that he had been murdered and I will be ecstatic when we get the person who done it.” Jack nodded. “I know that it might sounds harsh, but I will mourn for Lieutenant Nix when his killer is caught but until that time, I have work to do.” "And what work is that Lieutenant?" Ire paused for a moment and looked at Roberts trying to work out whether he was serious about the question. “As in flying the ship as well as being in the department head of Flight Ops.” “I see, just wanted to make sure you weren’t going to go all vigilante.” “Vigilante no.” “Just wanted to check, you do have a reputation for recklessness.” “What reputation for recklessness?” “Is that a joke lieutenant?” Jack said with a bit of a laugh. “Okay.” he looked back at Roberts. “Numerous accidents while flying, claiming there was a sabotage plot against you, yet no culprit was ever found, the incident on Trill, to name a few?” “That was a while ago.” “Do you think that given your last encounter with him, and your, gung ho ness, that people think you are a credible suspect?” “It was not an encounter. We had a conversation, mostly him talking to me. I was in the middle of a cargo run and did not have time to rise to his comments.” “What exactly were his comments?” ~I am sure that he would have access to the conversation~ “He mentioned the Captain promoting his friends over other officers insinuating that I got my promotion due to me being his friend as well as Commander Bracken becoming the XO and Lieutenant Ravok for getting his promotion. He also said that I would be second to Ravok as I did not have his intelligence.” He paused for a moment making sure that he remembered it correctly. “He did give me a backhanded compliment before leaving about that I had a bright future ahead of me and that I had heart and bravery compared to Ravoks intelligence.” “Do you think that is an accurate assessment, that the Captain is promoting his friends quickly? Or that perhaps that is the perception that other officers in the fleet might have?” “No, I do not think that it's an accurate assessment of why the Captain promoted us. We were the right people for the positions that he needed. I am sure other officers in the fleet may not think so and that they feel that they would be far better at doing my job. ” “How does that make you feel, knowing there are people who might think you have your rank due to nepotism rather than merit?” “How do I feel…….I worked hard to get to where I am at the moment. I along with everyone else on this ship proved that they have the right to be here. I am sure that there are others who do not feel the same. Being keel owners to one of the fleets three newest ships is a rare and very sought after, especially in this day and age.” “Does it make you mad or make you want to prove the doubters wrong, work harder, smarter, and show that you deserve to be where you are? I mean after all some people are in the fleet for 5 before making Lieutenant Senior Grade you did it in a year and a half.” Ire thought about what Robert had said. “Prove the doubters wrong, I don’t care what they think. The only person I need to show that I deserve my promotion is Trip, for the trust he put in me. For seeing my potential in me that I was not just some junior pilot. That I could progress and grow into some who could handle the responsibility of being a squadron leader and then chief flight officer.” He paused for a moment and then gave a slight smile. “Or he could have just been stuck after assigning Ravok and Petrova and needed another pilot so I got the slot.” “So you agree then, that you wanted to prove the doubters wrong?” “I want to prove Trip that he was correct in trusting me and I want to prove to myself that his trust in me was not misgiven.” “Do you think that maybe Commander Tyko’s compliment wasn’t so backhanded after all? That perhaps maybe he said what he said to light a fire under your ass, so you wouldn’t get complacent?” “It’s a thought but this is hardly a place to get complacent.” He indicated the room. “You get complacent on starship things go wrong and people die.” “Speaking of people dying, do you think Commander Tyko deserved to die?” “Of course not. He may have been irritating and trying to provoke me but he did not deserve to die. Maybe a change of assignment but definitely not to die.” “I actually don’t think he was trying to provoke you, I mean in a way yes, but not in the way you think.” “How so?” “Well just reading the statements he has said to many of you, just what I alluded to earlier. Everyone has a different style of encouragement or motivation. Some are more rah rah kumbaya, some are a little bit, sharper. He reminds me of a Drill sargeant I had when I was an enlisted Marine. His way of getting the best of us wasn’t to make us feel good or confident, but to piss us off to the point we would do whatever it takes to succeed to prove him wrong and piss him off. It wasn’t until after my injury, when he came to visit me during recovery, that he shared with me why he was such an ass. I think Commander Tyko was trying to do the same with you. Hence, what you thought was a backhanded compliment. I think it was a real one.” “Well he did come from a bizarre angle. Getting me pissed off is not the way to motivate me but from what you have said I can see what you mean.” “But you did in fact want to prove him wrong?” “Of course I want to be better than I am. I want to be the best I can be and it's nice of him to think that I have that ability to grow for the better. But I am not doing it for him.” “I think you misunderstand. Proving someone wrong does not need to be done for someone else. We do it for ourselves, but motivation is still motivation.” “That’s true.” “So if I recall correctly, you’ve also been identified as a person of interest in regards to his death, is that correct?” Ire nodded. “I happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. I went for a run which took me past his quarters close to the time of his death.” “How does it make you feel that one of your best friends could think you capable of murder?” “How do I feel that Ravok could think that I am a murderer worried but he is doing his job as chief of security and I would expect him to do his job no matter what his personal feelings were. Which means that he will have to look at all of us as suspects until he finds the murderer no matter what he feels personally.” “Well yes, but I’m not concerned with what Ravok feels. How do you feel? No explanations, no justifications. How do you feel?” “How do I feel? well, angry that Nix was murdered, worried that I may be being set up for it. I also want the person who did it to pay and well as find out why Nix was murdered in the first place.” Jack nodded. “Please let it all out. This is a safe space. Let your emotions out.” “We all know the risks when we joined but being murdered in a place where he thought that he was safe is horrible. It scares me that there is someone in the crew who is walking around as we speak who could do it again to someone else and we have no idea who this person is or why they did it.” Jack nodded. “Lieutenant, would you say you are one who struggles to express his emotions?” He paused for a moment and gave a slight nod. “Yes I guess you could say that. I keep my emotions under control and it takes a lot for me to feel happy to express them.” “Lieutenant do me a favor. Don’t be afraid to express your feelings. Bottling them up could be very dangerous to your emotional well being. Especially with your future wife.” “I will. We do talk a lot and discuss things that are irritating each other.” “I think this is the end of our conversation, however, I want you to go to your fiance and open up the floodgates. Tell her how you’re feeling. Open up, share. Let her into your thoughts. Share this with her. Yes it will disqualify her from investigating the murder. But it will be better for you psychologically.” “I will do that. I will go and tell what’s going on inside my head and how I am feeling about the situation.” “Is there anything else you would like to discuss?” “No thank you. I have nothing else at the moment.” “Alright then, well I have nothing else. Due your best to enjoy your afternoon.” Ire stood up from the chair “Thank you and I hope yours is not too hectic as well.” Ire turned and headed for the door. (Reply none) (USS Exeter – Conference Room – CO, Captain Trip Williams – 1315) Finishing his lunch, just a simple soup, a tomato basil, and a grilled cheese sandwich, he placed the tray back in the replicator for recycling. He then sat back down at his chair. He was brushing up on Starfleet's Uniform Code of Justice for Service personnel and what his role as Captain would be in the Penal process if and when they caught the murderer. Not the most fun reading. As he sighed, he figured he might record a log, just in case it was ever needed. "Computer, begin recording." Taking another deep breath he began. "Captain's log, Stardate 2445.12.02. What was supposed to be a simple mission to the Bolian homeworld has become topsy turvy and turned upside down. Our passenger, Starfleet Intelligence Agent, Lt. Commander Tyko Nix has been murdered. A murderer on my watch, pisses me off. The worst part is, we have no leads, no idea who killed him, and what motive. How do you determine a motive on the murder of someone that apparently pissed everyone off. Amongst persons of interest are my Chief Flight Officer, my Chief Operations Officer, my Chief Science Officer, one of my tactical officers, and a civilian with close ties to my first officer. Thankfully my first officer has been professional and kept herself above reproach throughout the process so far. Ailynn has done a bang up job, and the autopsy she performed for the investigation was top notch. My Chief Tactical Officer is leading the investigation, but he is being a bit too zealous at points. It is a reminder of how relatively young and new at this we are. I'm not sure at what point I should call in an outside investigation team. I feel so out of my league right now. But I guess...I trust my crew that they can handle it. Just need patience. End log." Trip then cleared his PADDs from the conference table in preparation of his command teams return to the conference room. (reply none) (USS Exeter – Conference Room – 2O/CEO – Lt. Cmdr. Keira Merek – 1332) Keira noticed instantly that Ravok was running late. She had spent most of the break running her own leads in Engineering and she did see him. She assumed he was held up because of his daughter. It’s probably hard on her just now knowing her father and then having the erratic schedule of a department head taking him away from her to boot. Maybe she was used to it from being initially raised by her aunt and her schedule. It was something that Keira made a mental note of to speak with Ravok, when their schedules finally got some time together. " Sorry for my tardiness Sirs." He said as turned towards the Ensign. " This is Ensign Hammerfield and she has just presented me with some helpful information towards the investigation. " Ravok said hoping to explain her presence. Keira had gotten better about controlling or at least hiding her sector wide jealous streak. Having her boyfriend walk in with a pretty red-head tested that, she was hoping she hid it well enough. ~Calm down. You know he would never do that.~ “I’ve meet Ensign Hammerfield.” Keira admitted her face well back into a neutral expression by this point. “She is knowledgeable and her input is welcome.” The Ensign gave a meek wave, “Hi.” Keira pulled out the chair next to herself but on the opposite side of her to Ravok. “Please, have a seat, Ensign.” (Reply Briefing, any room for more) The girl was obviously nervous to be in this room, Keira attempted to calm her down. “Please, “ ~What was her first name? Oh, yeah.~ “Janice, tell us what you found.” “Right yes... the findings. Talking with Lieutenant Cortez we have three plausible uses for the stolen substances. We ran on the theory that the stolen items and murder are related. One – an explosive device that could be attached to a sensitive area on the ship. The warp core or torpedo magazine and used as a bargaining chip to get off the ship should the be found. Two and explosive on a smaller scale to make an escape. Sabotaging the impulse engines, warp drive or computer core. Three a knock out gas to escape through the shuttle bay or transporter room. Potential it could be injected in the ships life support system but its effects would be reduced.” “The timing could be correlated but not necessarily linked.” Keira admitted. (Reply any) “Not doubting you or Lieutenant Cortez’s abilities, and not trying to insult anyone’s intelligence but, can’t we just scan for the missing chemicals?” Keira asked. “The chemicals themselves are being shielded from our scanners so we cant detect them. Cortez is not happy with this as we have some of the best sensors out there. We came up with a few ideas on how to proceed but we think that’s best left to yourselves to decide. One – A full search of the ship. Bow to stern. Two – Work on the scanners and try to find a way to detect them. Three and personally my favoured approach – Force the person to use or move the substances and maybe give us a way to find and track them down.” She looked about her and held her right wrist in her left hand to stop it from twitching a little while she waited from a decision or questions. ~Not happy is an understatement, Erin is probably pissed.~ “The list of substances our internal sensors can’t scan through is short. We can reconfigure sensor suites to adjust for some. Others would require a tunneling neutrino beam or other invasive scan but would be easier to do so if we had a target in mind, as searching the entire ship would be exhaustive, and could hurt some life processes. There are a number of energy fields that can hide an object, personal sized cloaking device, scattering fields etcetera. There are ways around those as well.” (Reply any) (USS Exeter – Conference Room – CO, Captain Trip Williams and CTO/3O, Lieutenant SG Ravok – 1335) “The list of substances our internal sensors can’t scan through is short. There are a number of energy fields that can hide an object, personal sized cloaking device, scattering fields etcetera. There are ways around those as well.” Trip sat in silence. "Lieutenant Ravok, what are your thoughts on all this on the chemicals?" "Each of the chemical compounds could be harmful or even fatal if ingested or delivered directly to the bloodstream." He stopped and looked at the others. "However if they contributed to his death it would have been very apparent on the toxicology assessment. " Ravok responded. "And what about as an explosive or gaseous component?" Trip asked following up. " A few of them in the right proportions could become volatile, even more so if they exploded in a sensitive area such as near the warp core or in the primary deflector control area. The damage could be catastrophic. " Ravok answered. "My concern is that the chemicals are red herring. The two seem unrelated. Based on the autopsy, the MO of the murderer seems to be more surgical, deliberate. A chemical weapon seems too...clumsy....based off of what we know about our killer, if they were intent on damage of that scale, wouldn't they have done it? I mean think about it. Why go through the trouble of killing Commander Tyko the way they did, when they could have set off a bomb near his quarters, blowing the commander and a few others into space. Less trouble, more chaotic. Easier to slip away." "It would certainly seem that these red herrings dont form a bread trail but rather someone took bread and threw it everywhere. Perhaps killing the commander was done to send a message. " Ravok said reluctantly. (reply any present) "Ravok, these chemicals, who had the access codes to the unit they were being stored in?" Ravok felt his heart begin to sink in stomach but he knew he had to answer. " Lieutenant Cortez is the one with the codes to those units, can't be opened, licitly, without her authorization." "In your mind is Lieutenant Cortez still a person of interest in this case?" He nodded his head. "Based on the ability to obtain these chemicals she regrettably remains a person of interest. " Trip nodded. "Ensign Hammerfield, I want you to take the lead on looking for these compounds. Recruit anyone you think can help. Converse with Lieutenant Cortez, but she is not to be part of the investigation as long as she is a person of interest. Is that clear?" (reply Hammerfield) "Thank you Ensign. Please proceed do so in the safest and least invasive way possible, both for the ship's safety and yours." (reply Hammerfield) "You are dismissed Ensign." (reply Hammerfield iyw) Once Ensign Hammerfield had left, Trip turned to his command staff. "Now then after an hour to think and get some food, any new thoughts or insights that have come to mind about our investigation?" He had blurted out something that if it got back to the Captain. He could wave good bye to any advancement on the Exeter. But then again it was really just an innocent comment. "That's an odd scenario to come up with Ensign. Do you think people really think you are going to go sniping people in the shuttle bay?" “ Actually it stems from my freshman year , at the academy. In those days the first year cadets had this wee game. They would give each of us a title. Like most likely to make head cadet , most likely to drop out after a year and most likely to go on the roof. With a Phaser rifle and pick off people. Yer see when I joined up it was six months or so after my break up. With my fiancé Gail. I was nay the person I am now. Withdrawn, quiet I barely spoke to others. So you can imagine who got that title.” "Do you want to go up into the shuttle bay with a sniper rifle?" “ Och nay. I like this crew......their like a second family to me. I have some good friends here and the boss I mean Commander Trip is a good man at heart.” Stan said. “ Why would I want to hurt anyone?” ( Reply , Roberts ) “ There will always be gossip. Once the true murderer is caught. Their soon except me as part of team again. The gaffer he believes I did nay do it.” Stan said ( Reply , Roberts ) “ Lieutenant Ravok. (Reply More) "Well, for one, I think you are very quick to jump to the extreme. Maybe not in action, but in thought." (Reply More) "The second, is I think you hold too low an opinion of yourself and your peers. I think it stems from the first, of jumping to the extreme. This notion that you wanted to turn yourself in, because people thought you were already guilty. The thought that your peers are so ready to write you off. Almost as if you will create a self fulfilling prophecy." (reply More) "Do you really think your peers so untrained, so naive, so quick to judge that they have already judged you guilty? And if so why do you think they would cast you off so easy?" (reply More) (Reply More) (USS Exeter – Jefferies tube – Engineer – Ensign – Galu Vozi - 1503) Galu looked at the open access hatch above him and cursed the engineer who though that it was a good idea to put a swappable component on the roof of the Jefferies tube rather than on the walls where most of the others. It was just his luck that this component needed to be swapped out on his shift. He reached out with his fingers and began to disconnect the component from its power source. He had been glad to get out of engineering for a little while as the gossipers had been going over time since the death of the Intelligence Agent. There were a lot of talk going around each one crazier than the next. He would be glad when the murdered was caught so that things would get back to the resemblance of normality. He removed the component and placed it beside him as he began to replace the new one. As he attached the power cable there was a pop followed by a fizz as he yanked his hand away the power failed. The lights blinked off and he was plunged into darkness. ~Ow come on~ He paused for a moment waiting for the back up lighting to turn on and frowned when nothing happened. “What on Orian is going on” He froze as he heard something clink down the Jefferies tube. He had a sudden thought that going off into the Jefferies tubes to do maintenance on his own with a murderer on the louse was not a good idea. His fingers closed around the failed component it was not much of a weapon, but it made him feel a little better. “Hallo is anyone down there?” He said into the darkness. (Reply any) (USS Exeter - Personal Quarters of Gabe Vesper- ACFO, Ensign SG Ronnie Winters - 15:30) Ronnie had been stirring all day trying to keep herself busy. Of all the days to be her day off, it just happened to be on a day in which an SFI agent was murdered, her boyfriend was sick, and the whole ship worried about what was going on. Of all the days, she wished greatly that she could have had this day on duty, just to have the work keep her busy and not worry. She decided instead she would focus all her attention, instead of worrying about the murderer, to focus on doing her best to cheer up her doctor boyfriend. Knowing Gabe, she was absolutely certain he would be a terrible patient. She pressed the chime. "Gabe, you in? It's Ronnie?" (reply Vesper) "I know you are sick, but if you are not too contagious I brought you a soup? A chicken noodle, with maybe a bit of kick, I'm sure you will like it."
