I just need to get this day started. Enjoy the rest of your run.” "Are you sure sir?" She asked, it didn't take someone with Betazoid ancestry to see that Ire was unsettled about something. (reply Ire) "Listen sir, I don't want to overstep my bounds so I'm not gonna pry, but if you need anything let me know. And if you need to take the day off let me know, Trinity and I can cover for you as needed." (reply Ire) "Take care sir." She said as she nodded and turned to continue her run. ~What the hell is going on here?~She thought to herself as she went down the corridor and turned the corner. Her mind kept thinking about the fact that Lt. Commander Tyko was dead, wondering if someone might have murdered him. It made her feel uneasy. As she passed by and looked at her shipmates starting their days, and as she looked at each one, she wondered. Which one of them could be depraved enough to commit murder? (reply Ire) (USS Exeter –Corridor–CFO – Lieutenant – Ire Williams- 0635) "Are you sure sir?" “Thanks Ronnie. I am sure.” "Listen sir, I don't want to overstep my bounds so I'm not gonna pry, but if you need anything let me know. And if you need to take the day off let me know, Trinity and I can cover for you as needed." “I am good but if the situation changes, I will tell you or Trinity.” "Take care sir." He gave her a reassuring smile. “Thank you. Enjoy your run.” He watched her carry on her run and paused before heading towards the turbolift. (reply any) (USS Exeter - Deck 9 Nine and Dine -COO Ensign (sg) Paul Sleeford - 09:30) Walking out, rag over her arm, she put a smile on her face and said, “Good morning, Ensign. Sorry about the state of the establishment at the moment.” Looking round Sleeford smile at the mess, there where replicator panels on the floor and it looked like a squad of marines had gone through. "Hi, open for a sandwich?" “I can probably manage a bacon roll if that would do?” Nodding Sleeford half smiled, "That sound fantastic, nice and crispy, no green stuff." “Of course.” Turning to head back into the kitchen, Caity stopped for a moment and then turned back, “Ensign Sleeford isn’t it?” "Yes, thats right, Paul Sleeford Cheif of Operations at the moment..Well I should be but I think I've been relieved of duty today" “It seems we are part of a very select group you and i.” Looking up into her face Sleeford saw the worry and the stress, "What group is that?" “Well, there are five of us. Five that have been either questioned or near enough accused of murder.” Laughing Sleeford shook his head, "In the case of some of the crew it's not near accused, it a given fact that we killed Tyko and if the rumour mill is right we all did it at separate timed, with in the timeframe of his death and none of us saw the others......" Pauusing Sleeford stopped as he realise he was about to go into a full blown speech. "Lets just saw that its been a stressful few hours and its going to get worse as the day goes on." As he waited for his roll Sleeford closed his eyes, the quite in the diner was having a settling effect, the thing that been plaguing his mind for the past hours was just in reach, if only he could grab at it. Placing his elbows on the counter he crossed his fingers and rested his chin on his hands, his thumbs under his chin. Staring at the wall opposite he let his mind go blank and the thought's to go where they went. Hearing the plate land he looked up and smiled. "Thanks" Picking up the roll he took a bite and allowed the bacon grease and oil to trickle down his chin, sighing he closed his eyes and savoured the taste. letting out a contented sigh he slowly finished the roll. Wiping is hands on the serviette, he slide off the stool, smiling and nodding his thanks. "I've just had the most stupidest idea. One that will no doubt have me cleaning the nacelles for the rest of my short career, you said there where five of us questioned, why don't we get together over drinks, most of the crew think we're all guilty so stuff them." (Reply Caity) Nodding Sleeford walked out of Nine and dine, pausing for a second or two headed up to his quarters, with nothing else to do he could catch up on some reading and some dreaded paperwork. (USS Exeter - Deck 9 Nine and Dine - Civilian Caity Dubois - 09:34) "I've just had the stupidest idea. One that will no doubt have me cleaning the nacelles for the rest of my short career, you said there were five of us questioned, why don't we get together over drinks, most of the crew think we're all guilty so stuff them." “That maybe a good idea. Although having all of us in the same place may raise some eyebrows. I swear i heard someone say that we all were involved.” Caity paused and thought for a moment, “Feel free to come and drink in here whenever you wish, Ensign Sleeford. It’s not like i am busy at the moment. Most of the crew seem to think that if they come in here at the moment, they may not leave.” (USS Exeter - Auxiliary Computer Core- SPCs Ensign Zot & Ensign Rylee Page - 1012) Walking into the auxiliary computer core, Rylee looked around for a moment. The place always fascinated her, the inner workings of the ship laid bare almost. Taking a moment to look, she sighed almost a sigh of relief. " Hello " Zot said to her as he climbed up a ladder from a lower level of the core. Pulling him himself onto the main floor. "Oh, hey there. Didn't realize you were in here." " This is my regular duty time and posting where else would I be ? " He asked. "I spoke to Ensign Sleeford earlier." Zot looked at her. " You seem calm. Would it be accurate to assume the conversation went well?" Smiling, she nodded, "I.. told him we were getting close and he wished us the best. He basically said that we were both adults and he trusts us to not let our private lives get in the way of duty." " That is good news. I am pleased that at least someone has good news today" He said. "What's wrong?" Rylee asked with. Look of concern on her face. " Most people are concerned with the possibility of there being a murderer on board. But I believe we have a much more dreadful reality we are facing." He warned. "I heard about that. There are so many rumours flying around it's ridiculous. I heard that some people think that the science chief and that bar manager killed him." " I do not know much about the investigation. I only know what I have been tasked with. What I know is someone hacked the primary and secondary core using synchronized breaches from multiple locations that have made tracking the source nearly impossible. One person could not have performed the hack by themselves." Zot said and stepped over to her. Rylee looked at him, wrinkled her eyes a little, "if I didn't know better, I would say you were worried. What is it Zot?" He grabbed her and pulled her close to him and whispered. "Command verification codes were used." Rylee's eyes widened. "Oh… oh that's not good." " No it's not." He said. "Why are you telling me this? I don't have that kind of security level clearance. I doubt I should even know that." " My job grants me high security clearances, but this is too much for me to handle. Helping Lieutenant Ravok with the investigation gives me joy and purpose. My specialty is computer programming not computer forensics. Murder is not something that doesnt happen among my people. We are a people free of such things. Yet this seems to be a downfall in our understanding of other races in the federation." Zot said with an undertone of fear in his voice. "Then you are lucky. Murder happens. It's destructive and terrifying." Rylee said quietly, unaware that her hand had grasped his tightly. " The entire concept eludes me. Even in a matter of self defense. How can someone end another's existence? " Zot exclaimed. "It's not something you can understand. People spend their entire lives trying to understand the whys and hows of murder. What they fail to understand is what devastation it leaves behind. The act itself, in its most basic form is power. It's power over another." Zot looked at her and blinked. " I have found there are other more effective ways to have power over another." "Oh?" Rylee replied raising an eyebrow. " Friendship and Love. Although I understand that those things can lead one to being hurt and also provide sufficient provocation to kill. I have also read about looks that kill. I find that rather frightening. " He rambled. He was definitely feeling on edge. Smiling softly, she took his hand and said, "it's a metaphor. It doesn't mean that a look can actually kill. It means…. Well, when someone gives you a look that says you are in trouble." " Well I certainly hope I get that look from anyone anytime soon." He said "Zot, I have to ask.. you don't regret our… friendship and closeness do you?" He slowly pulled his hand away from hers and turned away slightly. He closed his eyes. She asked him a question he wished he didn't have to answer. " I don't regret you. I will regret what continuing a relationship with me will rob you of. " Sensing something, Rylee stayed quiet. She could tell that this was something that he had thought about but had not wanted to say. " A more fulfilling life with children of your own. A continuation of your family line. With me you will not have any of that. I won't grow old with you. You will see me age much more rapidly than you in the years to come. I am already halfway through my life cycle. " He looked back at her. " You deserve more than what I can offer you." He said sadly. Putting a hand gently on his face, she looked into his eyes with a warmth that only comes from a place of love and spoke, "Zot, most people go their whole lives without ever knowing anything like the friendship, respect and care that I feel for you. You supported me when I was at one of my lowest points. You never left my side and you showed me what a true man is. If that means I only get a short time with you then so be it. I am not going anywhere. I have made my choice." She leant up and gently kissed his cheek. "I made my choice. Have you made yours?" He grabbed by her shoulders and pulled her in and kissed her. No words he had to say would be able to convey what he felt. To him she was beautiful, flawless and unique. Every part of her brought him joy. More than he had ever experienced in his life. He stopped kissing her and looked in her eyes " I choose us " Rylee smiled softly, put a hand on his face and said, "I choose us too. Although I also choose not to get into trouble so maybe I should leave you to your work." " That is probably for the best. " He smiled. Rylee smiled, "To be truthful, I had … thoughts that we were too different, that I was too different for you. Then I realized that I didn't care. The man I see before me is the man I have grown to care for. No-one else would have helped me through physio or actually helped me put my socks on when I struggled. I don't see the outside. What I see is you." " Please exercise caution. Don't wander around. I wouldn't know what I'd do if something happened to you. " Zot said to her fearfully. With a killer on the loose he didn't want anyone else getting harmed , especially her. "I can take care of myself but I will be careful." " Unless you are on duty. I order you to report to your quarters. " He said to her. Looking at him, Rylee smiled, "preferential treatment? Sleeford would not be impressed. " He tilted his head. " Actually no that isn't preferential treatment. I told Ensigns Slyom and Fromm and petty officer Kervik the same thing. " He remarked. Smiling widely, Rylee kissed his cheek again, softly. "I'll be careful. I promise to stay at home unless it's my duty shift. So long as you do the same, or at least, come and visit me." " I will come visit you when my duties permit me. As I don't sleep I am biologically the best option to actively monitor the data streams of the core." He responded. "I should go. You be careful and promise me one thing." " If it is within my power, I promise." He replied. He found it odd that a vow of a promise was often required before knowledge of the task. This was a new concept for him. "Don't do anything stupid. Don't play the hero . Stay safe." He tilted his head. " I am unfamiliar with that game. Is it a holodeck program you've found unsatisfactory?" He asked. Rylee laughed a little. "I'm going to head to my duty station. Remind me later to give you a crash course in colloquialisms. " " Crash course…" He thought for a second. He clapped his hands together with excitement then pointed at her. " I know that one. It means an extremely expedited lesson or instruction." He exclaimed with childlike optimism. "You're right." She responded, an expression of somewhere between amusement and joy on her face. "Never worry about me or my feelings. I made my choice and I chose this… us. So put that out of your mind and focus on the job in hand. That and do some research on the correct bottle of wine to bring to a date night." She winked as she turned to leave. " Juilea amber wine from the Hastia Vinyards in Gatlin Valley on your homeworld. Will that be sufficient?" Zot asked. He had spotted a few bottles on the starlight lounge. Pure and authentic. "Perfect. See you later then?" Rylee turned, headed to the door and then stopped, looked back over her shoulder, smiled softly and left. He watched her leave. He couldn't believe he was so lucky to have a genuine person in his life who didn't see him as some oddity or some strange creature from a far off world. He was currently one of seven Eunepians in starfleet. Which meant he was also one of seven Eunepians who were away from their homeworld. (Reply none) (USS Exeter – Ensign More's Personal Quarters -SPC Armory Chief PO2 Sytuk-11:22 ) “No I can’t help you. Before you start shouting hear me out. The way things are going my days on the Exeter are coming to an end. My only sliver of hope is to keep my head down and do as I am told.” Stan told him. " You are an officer Sir. I am bound by my mission parameters to not shout at you. " Sytuk exclaimed. " You weren't told to remain in your quarters Sir. I have to clear your name." Sytuk said. He had much more he had to say but couldn't find the correct method to do so. His people skills were still a work in progress. Times like this were frustrating to him. A year ago he wouldn't even have tried to talk to anyone. Now he wanted to help someone clear their name and save their reputation. “ You have to see this from my perspective. Going against regulations and getting involved. Is just something very foolish. Unless I get reinstated as a security officer. There is no way I can get involved. Plus what if we screw up? It will confirm my guilt. No I am sorry but I canna help.” Stan said sadly. Sytuk closed his eyes. He felt the struggle within. He had been sent here to help Stan work on clearing his name but was ordered to not reveal that to Ensign More. Sytuk clinched his fist as he shook with frustration. He had always followed orders to the letter, but he couldn't help it anymore. Finally he snapped. " Ensign More, I was sent here to help you clear your name. I am under direct orders from Lieutenant Ravok to assist you in clearing your name. I was ordered to not disclose that information to you yet I have failed.... The Lieutenant had to remove you from duty according to procedure. " ( reply Stan) " He was not required to confine you to quarters. You have to look at this from the mind of a Romulan. Lieutenant Ravok fitted you with a tracking device with a direct link to a CN type 2 tracking device. To help ensure that if another murder happened your locations would be logged in a database not connected to the ships main computer. Trust me I know a thing or two about Romulans . Even when their intentions are good they are masked in secrecy. They are hardly ever direct with anything they do." He admitted. ( reply Stan) " That's right." Sytuk said as he stepped closer to Stan and lowered the volume of his voice. " Lieutenant Ravok wants to help you, but he is bound by duty to not help you directly. He wants me to help you. " Sytuk stopped. He was betraying his orders to remain silent. " If we keep our eyes and ears open we can find out who did this." Sytuk said , holding to convince Ensign More. ( reply stan) (USS Exeter – Ensign More's Personal Quarters - Tac/Sec Ens.(Sg) Stan More- 11:23 ) Lillian gave Stan’s hand a nudge. He gave her a scratch behind the ear. " Ensign More, I was sent here to help you clear your name. I am under direct orders from Lieutenant Ravok to assist you in clearing your name. I was ordered to not disclose that information to you yet I have failed.... The Lieutenant had to remove you from duty according to procedure. " “ But in the back of his mind , he thinks I did it.” Stan said bitterly. " He was not required to confine you to quarters. “ So he wants to help.....” Stan said " That's right." Sytuk said as he stepped closer to Stan and lowered the volume of his voice. Now Stan Understood. True he had been an absolute idiot with a capital I. He should never of handed himself in. But now was not the time to dress in a potato sack and walk around wailing. The game was afoot! He clapped his hands and rubbed them. “ Ok. Let’s do it. Firstly tell me everything you have so far.” Stan said ( Reply , Sytuk ) Stan listened. His little grey cells worked together. “ Ok. Why. Apart from the obvious that Nix was a complete barmpot. Why would anyone wish to harm him?” Stan said ( Reply , Sytuk ) “ No. They would of looked into that already. This has to be someone or something from his past. Something that Nix did or didn’t do. That had someone out to end his life...... what do we know about his whereabouts during the occupation?” Stan asked. ( Reply , Sytuk ) (USS Exeter - Deck 5 Personal quarters -COO Ensign (sg) Paul Sleeford - 12:41) Sitting on the floor cross legged a book in his lap, Sleeford had lost all concept of the time, he'd been so absorbed when the call came from the first officer he looked up startled. “Bracken to CFO Williams, Lieutenant Cortez , Ensigns Sleeford and More, and Civilian DuBois; report to Counsellor Jack Roberts as soon as possible. Check his calendar and request an appointment at your earliest convenience. Bracken out.” Acknowledging the message, Sleeford stood and walked over to the terminal that sat on the corer of the small desk, finding a blank appointment for 13:45 he notified the counsellor that as per the FOs instructions he would be paying a visit. Wondering why the need to see a shrink. Picking up the book he placed a marker in the page, closed it and placed it on the table. Leaving his room he walked tot he turbo lift smiling as members of the crew darted out of his way or turned and went in the opposite direction, laughing out loud as tow female medics got in a tangle as the both tried turning in the same space. Shaking his head as the doors closed he rode down to deck seven and the medical centre, walking past sickbay he walked into the outer office of the counsellor, seeing the alarmed look from the yoman he shook his head. (USS Exeter –Counselling Department –Counselor, Ensign SG Jack Roberts - 1300) “Good afternoon Counsellor Robert, how are you?” "I'm good lieutenant, but I should be asking you that question." Jack said with a smile. (reply Ire) "Now then, please take a seat." Jack said motioning for Ire to sit opposite him in the comfy chairs. (reply Ire) "Now then, just some boiler plate language. This session is confidential. Just to check on you, see how you are handling the stress. Please understand that any probing questions are more to see how your stress levels are rather than any determination of guilt. Is that understood?" (reply Ire) "Now then, what's on your mind?" (reply Ire) (USS Exeter –Counselling Department – CFO – Lieutenant – Ire Williams - 1300) “Good afternoon Counsellor Robert, how are you?” "I'm good lieutenant, but I should be asking you that question." “Okay.” "Now then, please take a seat." “Thank you.” He took the seat that he was offered. "Now then, just some boiler plate language. This session is confidential. Just to check on you, see how you are handling the stress. Please understand that any probing questions are more to see how your stress levels are rather than any determination of guilt. Is that understood?" “Understood.” "Now then, what's on your mind?" “I am here because I have been requested to see you due to the death of Lieutenant Nix.” (Reply Roberts) “I am sad that he had been murdered and I will be ecstatic when we get the person who done it.” (Reply Roberts) “I know that it might sounds harsh, but I will morn for Lieutenant Nix when his killer is caught but until that time, I have work to do.” (Reply Roberts) (Reply Roberts, any) (USS Exeter - Day 2 – Main Science Lab - CSO Office - CSO Lt Jg Erin Cortez - 1310) “We have a few options. One – An intense search of the ship bow to stern. Two – We think up why we can't detect them and try to tweak the scanners. Three – We find some way to force the person's hand into using them. Four – All of the above.” Sighing, Erin rubbed her forehead, “None of those options sound easy. We have to think that the person or even, persons who did this are reasonably clever and have a good working knowledge of starfleet operations and rules of investigation.” “I never said the options were easy,” she gave a little shrug before adding more, “The problem with a full search of the ship is that it might give whomever took them an opportunity to use or place them – but it could be enough to provoke them into moving them to a new hiding place and giving us a window to locate them?” “Perhaps. But again, this person or persons were smart enough to kill a highly decorated starfleet intelligence officer…” She paused a second as the sight of Nix’s face flashed into her mind, “... and get in and out of his quarters undetected.” “It all hypothetical – without know more about who we are looking for it's like playing a game of chess where you can only see your own pieces,” The young officer scratched her head and then gave Erin a look, “You didn’t take them did you?” Raising an eyebrow, Erin leant forward, resting her elbows on her desk, “Are you seriously asking a head of department if they stole from their own backyard?” “Sorry – I had to ask – you’d be surprised how often the response to that can catch someone out when they don’t expect to be asked,” “Despite the current rumours on board the ship, i had nothing to do with the death of Commander Nix.” (reply Hammersfield) “Look, the best thing to do would be to talk with Lieutenant Ravok. At present, i have been questioned in regards to the incident. It may be better for him to make the decision on what course of action is best to take.” (Reply Hammersfield) “I can only suggest what i would do in his shoes. However, due to my current predicament, any course of action i suggest maybe seen as a potential attempt to conceal evidence and divert the investigation in a direction that would lead it away from where it should be focused.” (reply Hammersfield) Erin tapped a few buttons on her console and handed a PADD to the ensign, “Here is a list of what was taken. Lieutenant Ravok will more than likely have the same list so speak with him about the best course to take. This may be something connected although it could be an attempted diversion from the real course of action that they are taking.” (Reply Hammersfield) Erin nodded, “Thankyou for your time, Ensign. You have quite the brain on you. Keep it up and i see good things for you in your career.” (Reply Hammersfield) (Reply Hammersfield) (USS Exeter - Day 2 – Main Science Lab - CSO Office - Ensign Janice Hammerfield - 1312) “Despite the current rumours on board the ship, i had nothing to do with the death of Commander Nix.” “I didn’t mean any disrespect by it and I don’t really follow the rumour mill too closely. Just helps put my mind at ease knowing how you answered it to me,” Janice replied to try and explain why she asked. Her gut told her she could be trusted. It was wrong on occasion but she ran with it. “Look, the best thing to do would be to talk with Lieutenant Ravok. At present, i have been questioned in regards to the incident. It may be better for him to make the decision on what course of action is best to take.” "Understood – I can take that up to him if you would like?” she offered. “I can only suggest what i would do in his shoes. However, due to my current predicament, any course of action i suggest maybe seen as a potential attempt to conceal evidence and divert the investigation in a direction that would lead it away from where it should be focused.” "Conflict of interests – I understand,” she nodded. Erin tapped a few buttons on her console and handed a PADD to the ensign, “Here is a list of what was taken. Lieutenant Ravok will more than likely have the same list so speak with him about the best course to take. This may be something connected although it could be an attempted diversion from the real course of action that they are taking.” Taking the PADD in one hand she slid it into her back pocket as she stood up, “Ill get this over post haste.” Erin nodded, “Thank you for your time, Ensign. You have quite the brain on you. Keep it up and i see good things for you in your career.” "Thank you,” she turn to the door and before leaving stopped and looked back in, “If it means anything – im sorry for the position your in. I don’t think you had anything to do with this,” (Reply Cortez iyw) With a small nod she left letting the door close behind her. (Security - Ensign Janice Hammerfield - 1325) Janice leaned against the bulkhead, she was waiting by security for a few minutes as someone said the lieutenant would be back shortly and looking into the distance she spotted him. Removing her slouch she moved over, “Excuse me – Sorry to disturb you sir. I was asked by Lieutenant Cortez to bring this down to you.” She pulled the PADD out from her pocket and held it outward. (reply Ravok) “We have a couple theories what the substances could be used for. We were looking for a decision on what to run with for now,” she added in. (reply Ravok, any) (USS Exeter - Day 2 – Security center - CTO/3O Lieutenant Ravok- 1326) Ravok was quickly making his way back to his office to grab some things before the meeting with the command crew. He was running late which was uncharacteristically unusual for him, but that day thus far had been completely uncharacteristic.Upon entering the security center he was quickly approached. “Excuse me – Sorry to disturb you sir. I was asked by Lieutenant Cortez to bring this down to you.” The Ensign said as she pulled the PADD out from her pocket and held it outward. Not recognizing her, the Romulan Lieutenant was caught off guard. " Hello Ensign " He said as he grabbed the PADD “We have a couple theories what the substances could be used for. We were looking for a decision on what to run with for now,” she added in. Ravok glanced at the information handed to him. " I am running late to a command meeting. Follow me, I'm sure the captain wouldn't mind my delay due to a presentation of possible evidence." He said motioning his hand for her to follow as they boarded the turbolift " Bridge" Ravok commanded as the turbolift began to rise. " So What do you have me Ensign?" ( reply hammerfield) He looked at the PADD as she talked. " Well even though they are theories I find it best that we leave no stone unflipped or unturned however the saying goes." He replied with a smirk. He said motioning his hand for her to follow as they boarded the turbolift " Bridge" Ravok commanded as the turbolift began to rise. " So What do you have me Ensign?" She looked up at him and followed, “Basic run down is assuming this is the some one who committed the murder: One – A detonation device that could be affixed to a sensitive target – warp core, torpedo magazine. Used as a ‘im taking you all down with me if I cant get out approach’. Two – A distraction possibly on the engines on computer core to impede our ability to track and apprehend the subject should they want to get away. ( reply all in conference room ) NRPG: Just adding this in now. “Right yes... the findings. Talking with Lieutenant Cortez we have three plausible uses for the stolen substances. We ran on the theory that the stolen items and murder are related. One – an explosive device that could be attached to a sensitive area on the ship. The warp core or torpedo magazine and used as a bargaining chip to get off the ship should the be found. Two and explosive on a smaller scale to make an escape. Sabotaging the impulse engines, warp drive or computer core. Three a knock out gas to escape through the shuttle bay or transporter room. Potential it could be injected in the ships life support system but its effects would be reduced. We came up with a few ideas on how to proceed but we think that’s best left to yourselves to decide. One – A full search of the ship. Bow to stern. Two – Work on the scanners and try to find a way to detect them. Three and personally my favoured approach – Force the person to use or move the substances and maybe give us a way to find and track them down.” She looked about her and held her right wrist in her left hand to stop it from twitching a little while she waited from a decision or questions. (reply Sleeford) USS Exeter - Day 2 – Personal quarters - CSO Lt Jg Erin Cortez - 1403) Walking into her quarters, Erin took a deep breath and closed her eyes. The past few hours had been difficult to say the least. Finding out about Nix, being told that because of their night together there was a possibility that either she was a target or a suspect had hit her. Knowing that she now had to go and speak to a counselor, Erin had decided to take an hour before doing so and try to calm her mind. Doing so was something she had become accustomed to. Sitting by her table with her back against the couch, she closed her eyes and took several deep breaths. ~Freya, if there was ever a time I needed your counsel, it is now~ she thought to herself as she began to allow her mind to bridge the gap between what was now and the place in her soul that Freya occupied. NRPG: This next part is Erin's vision. RPG: Opening her eyes, the green grass of the landscape made her soul soar. The smell of the forest around her made her happy as she stood from her seated position, she did not need to look to know her ever present companion was by her side. The warmth of the fur by her legs calmed her as they walked a ways into the forest. .:what troubles you?:. Erin, as always in deference to Freya, did not turn and look at her, simply gently touched the fur in her back, "So much has happened. " .: I know. The weight of the passing of the man weighs on you. You know that, if it was his time… :. "But to go like that, it's not right." .: The night, that night he gave you more than you realize. He helped you on your path and now, there is another. Another that will keep you grounded and keep you steady. :. "I know, I feel like I owe him. I owe him more than I thought I did. When he came aboard, he asked again and I said no." .: Because you feel for the other? :. "I do. It would not have been right." .: Then his job, his purpose to you was done. He gave you that strength, that purpose and the ability to understand that you are worth what the other gives you. :. "Still, the question remains. How do I move forward from this? How do I stay in my path?" .: The same way you have always done. You are strong in and of yourself. You do not need to measure your worth by how much any one person makes you feel. You decide what you want and you alone can walk your path. If it is to be that the other walks the path with you, all the better. Your path is in front of you. The question is now, are you strong enough to walk it. :. NRPG: End of vision RPG: Opening her eyes, Erin sighed contentedly. She knew that Freya had been right, as she always was. Standing, she walked towards her door, feeling calm and settled again. No fears just calm. Seems I spend half my time here. ~ she thought to herself as she walked towards the receptionist. "Lieutenant Cortez to see Counselor Roberts." The young man looked up at her and regarded her for a moment. "Okay, you can go straight in. He's expecting you." Erin nodded and headed towards the door, pausing for a moment. ~And here we go again. Well, best foot forward girl. ~ she thought to herself as she walked through the door. "Lieutenant Cortez. I believe you are expecting me?" “I am Lieutenant, please take a seat.” He said motioning for her to sit. "Thankyou. " Erin replied as she sat opposite him. “Now then, what are you thinking right now?” Smiling a little, Erin took a breath, "That I am here because I have been requested to be and I really don't need to be." “Oh?” "I used to do your role as you probably know so I am not deliberately being obtuse. I won't lie and say that I am fine. The death of Commander Nix hit me for personal reasons. He was a good man, despite what some may think of him. But, personally, I am actually okay." “Let’s start there. Being investigated is not getting to you?” He said scribbling notes. "It's not that it isn't getting to me. I am concerned about it but is it bothering me? Not a lot. I am more worried about the fact that we have a murderer on board. That and I have been made aware that, because of my association with Commander Nix, I may be a target." “Why would you think you’d be a target, but say the captain or first officer not. Would you place yourself higher as a target than them?” He continued to take notes. "Firstly, those were not my words. Our chief tactical officer seemed to think I would be a target because I slept with the commander. Secondly, I don't place myself higher than them. Not at all. They would be a more strategic target and also, harder to get to." “Do you think it is a little odd that you are this calm, being a potential murder suspect?” "Odd, perhaps. But I don't think I truly am a suspect. I also know I didn't kill him. I had no reason to. He showed me that I am worthy of things that I previously did not think I was. If anything, I owe him more than I can repay him. Especially now." "What do you mean?" "I wasn't in a good place when we talked. I was hiding behind my past. He saw that, told me so plainly. He showed me that I was worthy of intimacy." “Why do you think he showed such interest in you?” "Honestly, I don't know. Maybe he saw something in me that I couldn't. Although he did say I had a good ass. " she replied, smiling at the memory. "Did you have a chance to reconnect with him before he died?" "Not in that way. We talked. We hadn't seen each other since that night. Him doing the job he does… sorry, did, he left before I woke up. So, when I saw him again, time had passed. I was a better person and am in a relationship now. He asked.. " Erin smiled slightly at the memory, "... for round two. His words exactly. " "Do you think he might still be alive if you had taken him up on his offer?" Raising an eyebrow, Erin stayed silent for a moment. The thought had honestly not occurred to her. "I hadn't honestly thought about it in that way. Now that you mention it, possibly." Jack nodded. "If I had taken his offer, not only would it have not been right, I could have been… well, in the same place he is now too." She sighed, her mind now whirring with the possibility of could she have saved him. "But do you think maybe he could have been reaching out to a friendly person? Maybe just someone to be around?" "Perhaps. But there are better ways to ask then propositioning someone for sex." “True, but then again, did he know the reasons that led you to say no existed before your conversation?” "No." Erin sighed. "I knew going into it that it was just about that night. I never held any ill will towards him. Not in the slightest." "Did you tell anyone else about that night? That it was only a one time thing?" "I… told one person. Why?" "I ask because the rumor mill is that apparently the manager of the Nine and Dine accused Commander Tyko sleeping with you and then disappearing. Usually when someone is ok with a situation they don't describe it to their peers in such negative language. " "I told one person. However, the rumor mill that is Starfleet must have been at full power because it seems that people on Mars found out. People make their own judgments. I did not describe it in any particular way, in fact, I may have said, to that person, that I found him enigmatic. " "How did that make you feel? Waking up and seeing that was gone?" Erin smiled. ~I can see where this is going~ "I wasn't angry. Surprised a little. I had hoped to say goodbye but I knew this was not a stay for breakfast situation. He left flowers and a note." Jack nodded. "Do you feel he might have used you?" "In what way exactly? I walked into that with my eyes open. In some ways, we used each other." "I guess my concern is, that you seem to be showing minimal signs of grief over the death of a man you owed something to. Not to mention you use the formal title of Commander yet use his given name of Nix rather than his family name. Commander Nix when the appropriate way would be Commander Tyko. Do you think you are maybe a bit too emotionally detached?" "I grieve. Don't think because I am calm about it that I don't. I choose to grieve in my own way on my own terms. Everyone grieves differently. I would rather keep my personal feelings about his death to myself. Only I know what he meant to me fully. So, please, don't think that I am emotionally detached just because I am not breaking down." Jack scribbled some more notes. ~Her reputation for getting defensive way to easily appears to be accurate.~ "I don't think you're emotionally detached because you're not breaking down. There are many ways to grieve many of which don't involve breaking down. But it's one thing to feel it and another to acknowledge it. Just needed to hear you say it. Sometimes we need let that feeling out in the open." Jack checked the notes he had copied from her file. "Especially when we have a history of running from our trauma." "I'm sorry. I reacted. It's a work In progress. I get defensive and I know I shouldn't. If I am being honest, part of me knows that there is somethings that I need to acknowledge, especially with regards to Nix and his death. It's hard to allow myself to so that sometimes. It was one night. yes it freed me and allowed me to be who I am and be with the person I am now. I haven't allowed myself to process it. I mean I barely have had time to do that. It's less than 24 hours ago. I have been so focused on what I can do to help that I probably should have been looking at how I am reacting to this." "That's important. We have to let ourselves feel." "Oh I know. Not easy when you have a full department reporting to you." Jack took a PADD and typed in an order. "You're officially off duty, per counseling mandate, for the next 24 hours. Use them to figure out your feelings." Erin sighed, "I knew this was coming. To be honest, it's a relief. One thing i don't want to do is go back to how i was." “And why is that?” "I am not that woman anymore. I don't want to hide." “I’m assuming that you aren’t under surveillance?” "Not that I know." “You should take some time for the spa, or go on a hike in the holodeck. Or however you feel you best process emotions.” "Spa doesn't seem like me. I do like to hike but archery is my thing." “So, back to where we started. Given your close nature with Commander Tyko, does it bother you that people think you could have killed him.” "People judge. It's just a fact of nature. Whether it's race or belief. So, in answer to your question, it does a little. " "Well let's go deeper on that. How does it make you feel?" "It hurts that people think I could be capable of that. Taking someone's life… it's brutal. I'm not that person." “But you’ve felt that kind of person in your mind, haven’t you?” Erin sighed. "You read my file so obviously you know what I have had happen." Jack nodded. "I won't lie and say I haven't felt that. Some of my own feelings but the worst time I felt that was Dulon. He had so much rage, so much anger in him it was hard to get back to who I was after he was removed. " Jack leaned forward and listened intently. "At night, when I go to sleep, i remember more of it. I see what he did in my dreams sometimes and I feel the anger, the need to hurt people for whatever dubious reason he felt was necessary. So yes, I have felt that person." "What about emanating from your own thoughts?" "Personally? Well, if you have read my file you will know about Christian. Did I go through a period of wanting to do to him what he did to me? Yes. I won't deny that. But I realised that it wouldn't change what happened, wouldn't change who I am today." "Have you ever felt like acting on that anger towards others?" Erin smiled softly, "No. Never. It's not in me to do that. I know that in my heart." Jack nodded. "Is there anything else you want to cover?" "Have you ever blacked out? With long periods of time unaccounted for?" "Since Dulon? No. Why do you ask?" "Just curiosity." He said taking notes. "Anything else you'd like to add?" "No. I will take your recommendation and take some time. That I can promise you." "It's not a recommendation. It's mandatory." "Poor Choice of words on my part." "Take care Lieutenant." Erin stood, nodded, "Thankyou." (Reply none) (USS Exeter - Deck 7 - Counsellors office - Civilian Caity Dubois - 1600) Walking into the counselling suite, Caity stood to one side and gazed around. The place was not at all what she had expected although she did feel a sense of trepidation rising in her. ~Am i here because Lieutenant Ravok seriously considers me a suspect?~ she thought to herself as she approached the door to the office. Taking a breath, Caity raised her hand to the console next to the door and stopped. Part of her wanted to turn and walk away. After the conversation with Ash earlier in the day, the memories of Sara and the feelings of blame that she still carried regarding that situation were still at the forefront of her mind. Part of her wanted to talk to this man about that but part of her was not ready to revisit that again so soon. Biting her lip gently, Caity pressed the door chime. As the door slid open, she walked in, “Caity Dubois… i’ve been asked to come and see you.” (Reply Roberts) (USS Exeter - Deck 7 - Counsellors office - Civilian Caity Dubois - 1600) “Caity Dubois… i’ve been asked to come and see you.” "Yes please, take a seat." Caity did as asked, putting her hands on her knees. Feeling a little nervous, she didn't realise her fingers were tapping on her knees as she looked over to him. "Now then, just to let you know, this session is confidential. Just to check on you, see how you are handling the stress. Please understand that any probing questions are more to see how your stress levels are rather than any determination of guilt. Is that understood?" "Yes.. okay." She replied quietly. "So how has your day been?" A small laugh escaped under her breath as she took a deep breath, "not exactly the best day you could say." “Well, that’s why we are here.” She nodded slowly, "I know. " “So, Caity, just start from the beginning. What’s going on in that head of yours?” "How long have you got?" “You are the last visit, you have my undivided attention.” "Well, I'm prime suspect in a murder that I didn't do, I can't talk to my girlfriend because every detail will be poured over and this has brought back some very uncomfortable memories for me." “Well, let's start at the beginning, why do you think you are the prime suspect?” Twisting some of her hair around a finger, something she did when she was nervous, she looked at him, "Because I told him to tread carefully with the crew. But it wasn't a threat, it really wasn't.." “Do you think you treated him unfairly?” Biting her lip, Caity nodded, "Yes and now I have no way to make it right. What I said to him was meant to be a gentle reminder to walk softly with the crew. They're young, some quick to jump to conclusions and may not have.taken his words in the manner he intended them." “Why do you think you phrased it in a way that could be taken with animosity?” "It wasn't meant that way at all. I chose my words badly. Let emotions get in the way." “Why do you think that was?” "Because this crew are special. They have taken me in when I didn't have much to offer other than my skills as a bar manager." "Did he ever threaten the crew?" "Not that I know.” "If he never threatened the crew, why would you then treat him with harsh words?" "It wasn't meant like that.." Caity replied, "it really wasn't. I meant be more careful in his manner…" she stopped talking and twirled her hair in her fingers. Jack looked at her body language and took notes. “Why do you think you held so much animosity for him? I’m guessing you would not have said what you said if you did not hold some discontent with him.” "Animosity… I didn't hate him. I just saw how he spoke to others and know that people respond better when you speak nicely. You catch more flies with sugar than vinegar. " "Do you think that's a universal? Take Tellarites for example. They would react negatively to, sugary comments." "I know. It's a saying that I've always tried to live by. I know that some cultures don't see it that way but I do." "Do you think he could have been trying his best to push them to be better in ways that are culturally appropriate?" Caity looked down at the floor, still twirling hair around her fingers, "Perhaps. Now you mention it…. I was wrong." "Did you have a negative encounter with Commander Tyko?" "No. He was… his own man. But, negative…. Not really. " “I see,” Jack said. Reading her body language, he could see that there was something she was trying to avoid revealing. “Miss, I remind you once again, this is confidential and is not trying to ascertain guilt in any way or assign blame. This is merely to see how you are doing emotionally and mentally. If you choose not to answer, that is your prerogative, but I want to stress that you shouldn’t be afraid to reveal what you are really thinking.” "It's not that I'm afraid. This whole thing has brought back some things that I hadn't thought about in a long time. I've been in this situation before. Not accused of murder, accused of something that I hadn't done." Jack nodded. "Tell me a little bit about that?" "What's to tell? My… parents blamed me for the death of my sister. So, I've been accused of things that weren't my fault. So this rodeo is nothing new." "And so you feel this situation is similar?" "Wouldn't you? Getting blamed for the death of someone twice over…" Caity responded, letting go of her hair and sighing. "Why did your parents blame you for her death?" "Because I…. I was with her every day, I left her alone once to get some air and she ran… a week later they found her…" Caity stopped, wiped her eyes and looked down at the floor. "They … if I hadn't left maybe she wouldn't have run. That's what they thought." "Why did she run?" "If I knew that…." Caity paused, wiping her eyes a little and looked at him, "She ran because she didn't want to deal with her problems. That's what I think. She couldn't deal and ran." “The thing is Caity, try as we might, the only people whose problems we can control are our own. While other people may blame us for the actions of others, we are only culpable for our own actions, or own doings, or what we don’t do. You’re needing fresh air doesn’t mean you are responsible for your sister running away. She made her choice, something she might have done with you there or not. Commander Tyko being killed might have happened whether you threatened him or not.” "I know. It's not the fact that she ran, it's the fact my parents blamed me for it. But, I get your point." “But what we can’t do is hide ourselves and our actions, because we think other people will assign blame to us for things we neither did or control. It’s not healthy for our psyche.” She nodded, knowing what he was saying was right. "Sometimes it's not that easy. I talked to someone before I came here. She made pretty much that point. But the one person I want to talk to, want to be honest with, I can't right now." "Do you understand why you can't talk to them?" "Of course I do. I know her job is stressful and it means the world to her so I do understand. Doesn't mean I can't wish that I could talk to her." “Just for my benefit, in your own words, can you explain exactly why?” "Why I can't talk to her? Because she's the first officer and anything I say she would have to report. It's her job. I understand that. I do." "Does she know about your sister?" "She doesn't know about my sister and, if this is going to go where I hope it will, then she needs to know. She should know." Jack nodded. "Because hiding things is not the answer. Being angry is not the answer nor is killing someone for no reason." "What about killing for a reason?" "What reason could there be for taking another's life?" "Well, excluding self defense, many people find justification for their killings. Even if entirely immoral." "I… here and now… I would say no. I haven't been put in that position. But I would say no. I wouldn't ever think to do that." "Then you have nothing to hide." "I know." "So tell me then, do you still feel like you need to hide your true feelings and give half truths about your encounters with Commander Tyko." Caity looked at him, "what are you implying?" "I'm not implying anything." "Maybe… maybe I am sick of being judged for something that wasn't my fault." "Miss Dubois. This session is to help assess your mental stress. It's obvious that there had to have been some kind of encounter for you to react to him the way you did. As you aren't a rude person." "There…. Okay, there was a moment…" "And?" "He called me out on something. Said that I wasn't being objective in my role and that i only had eyes for… well, the first officer. " "How did that make you feel?" "Upset. I know how to do my job and to have him insinuate I don't…." "Well did he say why he said that?" "I don't know…. " caity replied looking down at the floor. "Don't know or don't remember?" "I'm sorry… I just don't want to speak ill of the dead." "I understand." Jack said. "Im going to have you take the next 48 hours off from work. Take some time for yourself." "I haven't done that in a long time. I honestly don't know who I am if I am not working…" "Well maybe you should find out?" "Maybe you're right…" Caity sighed. Jack nodded. "Am I…. Crazy?" "Do you think you're crazy?" "I hope not. I just… I haven't had any time to think about everything…," "I don't think you're crazy. I just think you have issues with trust." "Probably. I need to learn how to let go and trust people. " "Why not head to the holodeck. Unwind. You need it?" "I could… to me unwinding involves a fire place and a book." "What would you read?" "Tolkien. I could escape to middle earth any day. " "I think you have a plan." "Maybe I do."
