She had tossed and turned most of the night not finding sleep easily. Jessica knew she could get though the day off of little sleep. She had trained her body to do it. Four good hours was all she really needed. Finally she was about to drift off when the internal comms of her quarters sounded. She mutter a few choice words under her breath before answering the call. "Yes, go ahead." she spoke aggressive than intended. =/\=Sir, I know that is late, but I have completed that report on the department that you wanted.=/\= "Thank you," She responded as she woke to the situation. "Go ahead and send it over to my PADD so I can review it. Signos out." In short order the report was sent to her. Jessica read over though the report. The data was accurate and well researched it gave her a starting point. Which was something she needed. The rest could wait till she woke to welcome the new day. Yawning deeply Jessica rolled into her blankets wrapping them around her small body, she let the darkness of sleep take her. Nothing like reviewing a report to make one tired and ready to sleep. Kalani replied. “Oh...” Kurt was careful with his words. “Can you elaborate Ensign.” It was a small department, so the more he understood his colleagues the better he could work with them. Kalani replied. “Oh...” Kurt was careful with his words. “Can you elaborate Ensign.” Kalani paused a moment to judge his motive to see where he was coming from and not seeing any bad she decided to proceed slowly. "Sir, do know anything of the Lakota spirit world beliefs?" she asked to get some form of understanding. (Reply, Palmer) "Well sir," She decide to explain a little to him. "We believe that everything has a spirit, plants, animals. My my spirit guides are wolf and eagles or birds. But I also gained the ability to talk to plant to help guide them and in turn the talk to me." “I see.” He processed her response. “And naturally that’s what drew you to hydroponics. Duke said as he smiled at started heading toward the door. He noticed that the lieutenant seemed a little on edge. As he reached the door he turned around. "Lieutenant, I hope you don't get the wrong impression about this encounter. I just wanted to welcome you to the ship.I know I am a bit outgoing, but it's nothing more than a welcome. Nothing nefarious or judgy, or with some kind of agenda. Just so you know. I was raised to be kind and welcoming, it's the southern influence. But I don't want this to get off on the wrong foot, so I hope you don't think I have ulterior motives." "Sir, I believe you, I do and thank you, it is just something else." she replied trying to sound a little less crazy. Smiling at him she slowly closed the door after he left then walked to her couch to try and figure out where here thoughts came from. How are you coping with the time shift?” The science chief hated getting too personal in conversations. “Oh, I’m fine. Luckily I don’t have too many people who are overly concerned in this version of reality.” He chuckled to brush off the question, and took another drink from his glass. It will be interesting to see what they bring to the department.” “Aldebaran Whiskey- the other Williams just introduced me to it.” Andrew was about to reply when Duke stepped over. "Yup, I did. It's got an interesting flavor, but can be served naturally cold which is nice. Not to mention the fact that it is legal. Of alien alcohols, it is probably my favorite. "The new guys should be fine, from what I hear poor Ryan over there is gonna be mentoring them." Duke nodded “Poor him. Rather him then me. I am going to be busy with the two I have.” The doctor replied. “Ah yes, I just met him the other day.” Kirt glanced over noticing the lieutenant was slowly falling asleep. "Hey listen, I was wondering if you guys are free in the next few days. "Well how do you feel about Zombies?" Kurt glanced over to the doctor- he decided to let him respond first. “I have no problem with Zombies. Are they the slow shambling type the come at you in an endless tide or the wet your pants ones that can beat the land speed record on foot?” The doctor asked after thinking for a moment. “Not my usual cup of tea, but I’m happy to try anything once.” Kurt added. For weak members of the crew, he used current reports and commbadge tracking to correlate his research. He tried to be as fair as possible to eaxh person, and when it came to himself, he recused. He then used various after action reports and security scans to come up with areas of the ship that were weak on protection. He knew that it was late, but he wanted to show the Commander his initiative and to keep somebody else from taking credit for his work like Thibadueax did. (Reply Signos) (Posted by Gary Dupree) ======================================================================== Mission: First day of the rest of your life Day: 3 Stardate: 2418.02.15 (USS Spectre - Deck 6, Arboretum - Medical Trauma Technician, Ensign JG R'uann - 08:40) R'uann was seated upon a small bench enjoying the relative peace and quiet of the Arboretum. It was so tranquil here, and it reminded her a little of a place where she used to sit as a young child on Bajor. Not the actual location of course, but the trees and the flowers that were cultivated here which made for a little bit of softness for the senses, in the otherwise harsh environment of a Starfleet vessel. She made note then that the moment she got her access granted to use the Holodecks, she would recreate that place as a means of relaxing in the busy environment of a ship of the line. As she watched though, she took note of an older Woman that had recently arrived. She looked somewhat frail and began to walk amongst the plants and the trees herself, occasionally scanning them with a tricorder, presumably in order to check that they were hydrated and healthy, one would imagine. For the moment anyway, R'uann remained silent as she watched the old Woman work. She looked happy anyway, and clearly pleased to be amongst this little bubble of nature. Something that the Bajoran herself could appreciate more than most these days. So much different from the ravages and ruins of Bajor's once unspoilt and beautiful landscapes. “That’ll do” she muttered, closing her Tricorder then and returning it to her case, obviously thinking now that she was alone in the Arboretum. Something that R'uann chose not to intrude upon. For now anyway... Sometimes people just liked to be alone with their thoughts in order that they could perhaps express them verbally without fear of anyone judging them for doing so. And R'uann could relate to that as well. The Woman continued on, moving slowly amongst the plants and the trees, occasionally stopping to observe, and then scanning as she went, with R'uann herself still content to just let her do so, hidden within the relative enclosure of the low drooping leaves of the trees that surrounded the area in which she sat. The old Woman was suddenly nearby now though, and looking for all intents of purposes as though she were about to leave. She stopped briefly and then looked about one last time before glancing upwards with a smile towards the stars, which twinkled high above them through the glass dome of the Arboretum. "It's beautiful here, isn't it", said R'uann, suddenly making her presence known, and startling the old Woman from her thoughts... (Reply Addington) (Posted by Alan) (USS Spectre - Deck 6, Arboretum - Xenobotanist, CPO Betty Addington - 08:41) The hunched woman moved a finger over her tricorder as she scanned the plant life in front of her. As per usual Betty spent her morning quietly tending to the arboretum. That week marked her fifty fifth year in Starfleet. Though now petite and frail, she still possessed a sharp wit and mind. After fumbling with the device for a moment she managed to fold it shut. Her withered features formed themselves into a smile as she put her hands on her hips. “That’ll do” Betty in a brittle voice said to the empty room. She paused for a moment before tucking the tricorder into her lab case. Betty had spent the majority of her career assigned to various starbases. She found that the demand for her specialized expertise didn’t normally bring about assignments on starships. Though in the case of the Spectre, the lack of experienced science officers warranted her being there. It was a small motley group in sciences. There was an understanding that a small department meant there was no room for conflict. However, unconcerned with command structure, she often found herself at odds with their very green Chief Science Officer, Lieutenant Palmer. He was young and still coming into his own as a leader. Betty had worked under many science officers over the years, but never had the desire to take on any sort of higher responsibility. She had voluntarily declined the officers program on multiple occasions, and slowly worked her way up the petty officer chain. Though rank was never as important to her as the work. She walked one last loop around the arboretum. Her small steps and hunched posture meant this took a little longer each day. However, her determination always won over her physical weaknesses. (Reply, any) ((Post by Cody)) (USS Spectre - Deck 6, Arboretum - Xenobotanist, CPO Betty Addington - 08:44) Feet planted firmly, Betty precariously arched her body backwards to look up through the domed window overhead. “It's beautiful here, isn't it" Came a voice. Startled and wide eyed, she looked back to see who was there. (Reply, R'uann) “Oh.” She squinted, not used to seeing anyone in the arboretum this early. “Hello dear.” She said as she spotted a rugged looking Bajoran woman. (Reply, R'uann) Betty shuffled a few steps towards the woman. “I don’t recall seeing you in here before.” (Reply, R’uann) ((Post by Cody)) (USS Spectre - Deck 6, Arboretum - Medical Trauma Technician, Ensign JG R'uann - 08:45) All at once, the Woman turned about just a tad startled at R'uann's unexpected input, which caused the Bajoran to feel a little sorry for her. She stood immediately and then extended a hand as though to steady her, should she happen to lose her footing. "I'm so sorry", said R'uann. "I didn't mean to startle you. Please, accept my apology" The old Woman fixed her gaze upon the Bajoran and then slowly relaxed somewhat. “Hello dear.” She said, shuffling forwards on clearly uneasy feet. “I don’t recall seeing you in here before.” R'uann retook her seat and then smiling, shuffled up to the very end of the bench, patting the surface with her hand as though inviting the Woman to come join her, before vocalising it to leave her no doubt. "Please, come and join me", she offered. "And no, I've not been here before. I've only just transferred aboard the Spectre out of the Academy. Ensign R'uann, Medical Trauma Technician, at your service", she added. (Reply Addington) (Reply Addington) (Posted by Alan) (USS Spectre - Deck 6, Arboretum - Xenobotanist, CPO Betty Addington - 08:47) Betty made her way over to sit next to the ensign. As the woman explained she had just come from the academy. “Ensign R'uann, Medical Trauma Technician, at your service" Betty carefully lowered herself onto the bench beside R’uann, and hoisted her case onto her lap. “Betty Addington. Xenobotanist.” She always found it charming meeting fresh graduates. “And where do you come to us from?” She said resting her hands on the lab case. (Reply, R’uann) “Oh. Well. That’s a ways away.” She leaned in a bit closer. “You know, Indika is one of my favorite flowers. Your world has some spectacular plants.” Betty smiled. (Reply, R’uann) ((Post by Cody)) (USS Spectre - Deck 6, Arboretum - Medical Trauma Technician, Ensign JG R'uann - 08:48) “Betty Addington. Xenobotanist.” answered the old Woman. “And where do you come to us from?” "Well, good morning to you, Betty. I was born in Musilla Province on Bajor", said R'uann. "I grew up in Rakantha Province, which was so beautiful" R'uann, turned her head then, her expression changing then to one of sorrow. "That is, until the Cardassians ruined it and turned it into a barren wasteland". The Bajoran didn't waste too much time dwelling on that though, and quickly changed the subject. "So yes, Bajor is my home", she said, wondering then why the old Woman hadn't actually noticed her nose ridge. But then, perhaps her eyes were not what they used to be and facial features did tend to blur with age. “Oh. Well. That’s a ways away.” said Addington. "You know, Indika is one of my favorite flowers. Your world has some spectacular plants.” "It does", said R'uann. "I remember my Mother growing the most amazing Lilacs. (Reply, R’uann) “You know, your mother’s happiness is the most important memory to hold on to.” She paused, reminiscing. “Mine loved lily of the valley. She had two brown thumbs though.” Betty said raising her thumbs and chuckling. “I remember on one of her birthdays I brought her some, to plant. I was much younger then. Maybe 8.” Betty paused and looked out into the arboretum. “I had seen it in a movie once. I thought it was a great idea. We lived in the city though so plants were hard to find. So I figured I’d have to go on a hunt! One day after school I went out into the park, in the center of town, and collected some.” She looked back to R’uann and smiled. “When I got home I was covered in dirt- I mean covered. Now my mother found me when I got home. Well, I had tracked dirt all over. She stormed into my bedroom ready to let me have it.” Betty chuckled. “She burst in, but as soon as she saw the flowers. She just looked at me with a smile and said ‘now what have you done.’ We laughed and returned the flowers to the park that evening.” Betty giggled to herself. “She had no where to plant them after all. The good ones.” (Reply, R’uann) ((Post by Cody)) (USS Spectre - Deck 6, Arboretum - Medical Trauma Technician, Ensign JG R'uann - 08:51) “You were close with your mother then?” asked Betty. R'uann paused at that. The good memories of times before the conflicts returning, and of course, some of the bad as well. "I was", she answered. "I have many fond memories of my childhood and adolescence. We weren't particularly wealthy of course, but we got by. And my Fathers job in the media helped of course." “You know, your mother’s happiness is the most important memory to hold on to.” said Betty, “Mine loved lily of the valley. She had two brown thumbs though.” she added, laughing to herself then as her own memories obviously came flooding back. R'uann listened intently as the old girl relayed a time when as a child of 8, she had made a special trip to find her own Mothers favourite flowers, and how she had then ended up covered from head to toe in muck, much to the chagrin of her Mother. R'uann smiled along at the story, and then laughed when Addington relayed the part where she was about to get a good telling off for tracking dirt through the house, only for her Mother to see the recently collected flowers that she had brought her, and then melt into laughter herself. R'uann chuckled again. She was quite impressed actually at Betty's ability to remember things with such detail and clarity. And then she remembered the words of her Father just before he had gone off to war. 'Always remember the good times, R'uann. Learn from the bad, but don't let them ruin your future' She'd not fully understood that in her own troubled youth, but it made a lot of sense to her now. And now here was living proof of that sitting right beside her in Betty Addington. A Woman that had no doubt seen a lot of heartache and suffering throughout her years, and yet still here smiling and relaying stories such as the one that she had just told. "Your Mother sounds as though she were a wonderful person, Betty" said R'uann. "I think she would be proud of the Woman that you've become, here now, and tending the flowers and such" (Reply Addington) R'uann then placed her palms onto her thighs, aware now that she had to report to sickbay very shortly. She was a little reluctant that she couldn't stay and chat for a little longer, but then, there would be other times, and she loved to hear the experiences of those that had lived for far more years than she had. "I'm afraid I have to go now, Betty", she said, a hint of sadness evident in her voice as she stood and then extended her hand towards Addington as though to offer her support if she needed it. "I noted that you appeared about to leave earlier. Before I interrupted you I mean. Perhaps I can walk with you for a while. And maybe, we can meet up again and relay some more stories from our past" (Reply Addington) (Reply Addington) (Posted by Alan) (USS Spectre - Deck 6, Arboretum - Xenobotanist CPO Betty Addington - 08:52) Betty smiled, as the ensign rose to her feet. "I'm afraid I have to go now, Betty", R’uann said before extended a helping hand. Betty stubbornly struggled on her own for a moment and managed to lift her self on her own. "I noted that you appeared about to leave earlier. Before I interrupted you I mean. Perhaps I can walk with you for a while. And maybe, we can meet up again and relay some more stories from our past" R’uann added. “That sounds wonderful. I’m here every morning.” Addington smiled again, retrieving her case from the bench. “I have to make my rounds in hydroponics next.” (Reply, R’uann IYW) ((Post by Cody)) (USS Spectre – Deck 16, Dropship Bay – Boat Bay Officer, 2nd Lt. Is it family related, I've noticed a crap ton of Smiths on board, husband, brother, cousin?" She paused for a moment before answering. “It was decided that I needed big ship experience. He didn't have any full siblings. His parents dated when they were in college. His dad was at the Academy, his mom at the University of San Francisco. She got pregnant right before graduation. They both realized it would never work. They broke up. Cade grew up with his mom and step-dad and his three half sisters. His step-dad was a marine master seargeant who was in charge of drilling the marine cadets. He grew up in San Francisco. His dad was present in his life but not as much as both would have liked. His dad married an orion woman, and he had two half-sisters who were half orion. His step mom was really nice and subconciously why his favorite color was green. None of his five half sisters were in Starfleet. "It's funny how people decide things for you when you think your career was going fine and change it all up." Having not grown up on Earth, the science chief found himself disconnected from some idiosyncrasies of its culture. “Not as much as I would like.” Kurt replied leaning forward and placing an arm on his desk; Intrigued in the Ensign’s story. "Well sir," She she began. "We believe that everything has a spirit, plants, animals. My my spirit guides are wolf and eagles or birds. But I also gained the ability to talk to plant to help guide them and in turn the talk to me." “I see.” He processed her response. “And naturally that’s what drew you to hydroponics. So why Starfleet? Why not explore your interest in botany in another way?" He noticed a crack in her voice as she explained. "That reason is my personal love for my parents who served in Starfleet and my mom who died as CSO.” Perhaps her career choices were much more personal than her personnel file let on. The science chief pondered for a moment and allowed the ensign to gather her self again. “I’m sorry for prying Ensign.” He replied after a brief moment. “Well it sounds like your dedication and ability will allow you to do remarkable things some day.” (Reply, Kalani) He shuffled through the PADDs on his desk, before handing one to her. “Here is an overview of what we have going on in hydroponics, and related sub-departments.” He have the ensign a moment. “I want you to check in with Chief Petty Pfficer Addington- she’s temporarily in charge of that area for now. She’s been in Starfleet for longer than both of us combined, and a bit of a fixture down there. Even though you out rank her, she has more experience in this department than any of us. So I want you to work with her to streamline and update our processes in hydroponics.” (Reply, Kalani) “Since we’re all two years out of date- I’m certain you have a better grasp on Starfleet’s newest protocols and all that. I think the two of you will get on well.” He stood and straightened his uniform shirt. “Next week we’ll set up a meeting and see what you’ve come up with.” (Reply, Kalani) “It’s been a pleasure Ensign.” He extended a hand and smiled. “Welcome on board.” (Reply, Kalani) ((Post by Cody)) (USS Spectre - CO's Office - TAC/SC, Cmdr Jessica Signos - 09:47) Commander Signos", he began. "I see from your file that you were orphaned from a very young age" "I'm sorry Captain, but I dont sugar coat my past. My parents were murdered and I was kidnapped. Due to a genetic mutation Section 31 destroyed my life. I was housed with a Section 31 family and schooled by Section 31. Every aspect of my life was dictated to thier whim." Jessica spoke her voice cold and unfeeling. She knew that she was an asset that Section 31 would never let go. The Captain nodded, his own memories resurfacing now as she relayed her story to him. Her experience with Section 31 interested him also, most typically in regards his own experience with the department during the civil war, and then onwards to their involvement in the Spectre's, shall we say, more colourful missions. "You were schooled by Section 31?" he enquired, noting the shift in her temperament at that point. It would appear that this was perhaps not the first time that the Commander had been quizzed on this. "Section 31 does not like stupid agents in there employ. But that also being said my curriculum also a bit more varied." Again she spoke matter of factly. "We have few friends within that particular department", said the Captain, taking a sip of his juice and then placing the glass onto the table. "Indeed, whenever Section 31 appears on my ship, they like to make accusations and spread dissent" he added. "I trust that this will not unduly affect you service aboard Spectre" "It hasn't so far, I have no care for my previous employer. I cant escape them. But I have no love for them." The Captain nodded, taking note of the Commanders words. If the truth were to be known though, he knew that once some of the crew learned of her connection to the intrusive and oft times malevolent department, tensions might well rise, and he needed to know also that the Commander could take that in her stride. From her answers thus far though, it appeared that she could more than look after herself. Moving on though, he began to quiz her on the Spectre's recent mission and her disappearance in time. "You are aware no doubt of the fact that we were missing for two years" said the Captain. "I would be interested in your input on this matter, once you have studied the ships logs and reviewed our security manifest, that is" "I've already considered it quite a bit. As far as I'm concerned the entire crew is two years behind in physical training and tactical training. From phaser requals, anti boarding actions, to providing security to key areas of the ship. I have already met with Darpeg and he is working on a full tactical review for me so I can start to address key weaknesses. Not to mention the ship needing a full tactical overhaul." The Captain nodded once again in acknowledgement, before returning to the PADD and Signos' Starfleet record for the last time. "I would imagine that you are eager to meet your staff and settle in", said the Captain. "The ship is currently undergoing essential maintenance and refit whilst we are docked. You might want to liaise with Starbase command on that. In the meantime though, all that is left for me to do is to formally welcome you aboard the Spectre" said the Captain. "Yes sir. I will do that." T'Vhor stood and then extended his hand in a customary Human greeting... "Welcome aboard Commander Signos. I look forwards to working with you" said the Captain, who then bade her dismissed.... "Sir there was one thing I was wanting to talk with you about. Call it do diligence. But why does a ship of the line have technology and weapon systems that belong to Section 31 on board last I checked they went much into sharing tech." She asked as the Captain made the motion to dismiss her. (Reply T'Vor) (Posted by Matthew Locke) (USS Spectre - CO's Office - CO, Captain T'Vhor - 09:49) Signos had already acknowledged the Captain's dismissal, but it appeared that there was something else on her mind. A niggling curiosity perhaps, which the Captain was now perceiving as an edginess courtesy of his Betazoid heritage. And then there it was... "Sir there was one thing I was wanting to talk with you about" she began. "Call it due diligence. But why does a ship of the line have technology and weapons systems that belong to Section 31 on board. Last I checked they weren't much into sharing tech." The Captain raised an eyebrow at that. Section 31 technology? Where was she going with this? First and foremost, the query was highly likely above her station. Secondly, why any Federation ship was sporting technology not usually seen within its arsenal and defensive capabilities, was a matter for Starfleet. Not the crew that crewed its ships. Indeed, not even the Captain himself was privy to why certain hardware had been fitted. "Perhaps you could be a little more specific Commander", he asked. "Which technology are you referring to?" (Reply Signos) (Posted by Alan) (USS Spectre - CO's Office - COPS, Lt.jg Ansia Rozen - 10:08) "Sir Lieutenant Ansia Rozen reporting as ordered", said the newcomer, after walking forwards through the now opened door. The Captain took note of the Woman as she came to a halt on the other side of his desk, sensing her nervousness as she did so. This wasn't particularly due to her innate ability to 'transmit' by way of her Betazoid heritage of course, it was purely deduced from her evident unease at addressing her CO for the first time. Of course, it was not an uncommon thing for anyone to be feeling, indeed he had felt it himself on occasion during his own rise through the ranks. T'Vhor had always felt it important though to address people on equal terms upon first meeting them, and so the first thing that he did, was put the Woman at ease. "At ease Lieutenant", said the Captain, hoping that that would calm her somewhat. "Please, take a seat" he added. And his new Operations Chief did so... The Captain then accessed his terminal, the 2nd time in less than a half hour as he surveyed the new arrivals to his ship... So, here was another interesting and varied officer, and the Captain was surprised to see that she had studied the Vulcan language to the level of expert, which prompted him to immediately ask - "Uf nam-tor du olaya nash-gad ot-lan?" "Tor nam-tor trau maut nervous osu,O am pudor-tor tor nam-tor la' heh nam-tor pudvel-tor na' nash shul ", she replied, " U' i am uzh tor wuh shul i dungi ar'kadan t'nash-veh buhfik tor oren-tor. I vesh' originally eku u' gen-lis-tal heh communications. Nemaiyo na' giving me wuh pavesh tor practice veh t' t'nash-veh pudvel-tor gen-lis t' orenau. " The Captain's switching to Vulcan was either to to test her or to try to help set her at ease. Either way way she followed with ease and it did somewhat settle her nerves. After having a nice conversation with the captain, she was a lot more at ease. Then he turned it toward the refit that was ongoing at the time. "Yes, sir, since I am new to the job, the more I observe what is being done the more I will learn." Ansia replied, "also I need to understand what exactly the refit is." (Reply Capt) (Posted by Frank) (USS Spectre - CO's Office - CO, Captain T'Vhor - 10:09) The conversation, in Vulcan, continued on between the Captain and his new Operations Chief, with Rozen seemingly glad of the linguistical exercise. There had been slight grammatical incongruities in her speech, but certainly not enough to make it hard for a Vulcan to understand that she was more than pleased to be given the position of Ops Chief, and also happy for the chance to be using her linguistic skills. But then of course, the conversation switched to the ships refit and the Captain's subsequent suggestion that as the Ops Chief on a new vessel, she might want to be overseeing a good portion of that refit. After all, what better way to learn than that? "Yes, sir, since I am new to the job, the more I observe what is being done, the more I will learn." she had said, "also I need to understand what exactly the refit is." The Captain nodded accordingly. "It is documented in full on the Operations roster", he began. "You have clearance to access that whenever you wish to", he added, reaching down then to pick up the glass from the table again and taking another sip of the cool, refreshing liquid before continuing on. "Starbase 19 senior technician Lovell is overseeing the entire refitment. You might want to liaise with him also" said the Captain, replacing the glass back onto the table. Hythame watched him move away and then turned to R’uann whom he had not met properly yet. A boss with a sense of humour and a relaxed candor to boot. Normally, when she had neglected to resort to the correct protocol according to Starfleet regulations, for example, calling a senior officer 'Doc', instead of 'Sir', she'd received some kind of an admonishment for it. Commander Williams though, just seemed to brush it off. “Yes I did Mrs R’uann, and Doctor is fine for when we are on duty.” he had answered in response to her query and slight faux pas. No sooner had he answered though, he was dashing off again towards a nearby Nurse. “I am sorry I just need to deal with this.” he said, and then he was gone, leaving R'uann a tad confused and shaking her head in disbelief. The Selkie however remained, which suddenly had the Bajoran at a disadvantage, which once again was not a common occurence. “I am Hythame the new zero-g specialist. I don’t think we had an opportunity to introduce each other earlier.” said the Selkie. R'uann nodded. "No, we didn't did we. Which is a shame. I mean... "Time n all" (Reply Hythame) R'uann listened to the Selkie speak, which was an odd experience whilst watching his mouth move immersed in the liquid environment behind his faceplate. R'uann raised a hand, her forefinger extended as though something were on her mind and about to spout forth. Then she thought better of it. It was probably too personal a question to ask so soon anyway, so she refrained from doing so and moved her hand instead to the side of her face to brush an errant hair strand from her eye. "Tell me", she said. "Does he always do that? Ask people to come as soon as possible, and then run off?" But I am sure as a medical professional, he takes the care of his patients over talking to us which is good thing.” R'uann nodded, scrutinising the faceplate and the associated apparatus around it and wondering how it all worked. This was the first time she had actually seen a Selkie of course, and outside of their predominantly aquatic nature, she didn't know an awful lot about them. "I guess that would be a prerequisite for a chief of the department" she said, "After all, leaving a patient in need just to chat to a few newly arrived Ensigns versus that? No contest" (Reply Hythame, IYW) "Tell me", said R'uann. "I hope you don't mind my asking but, how does your environment suit work exactly? The mention of the EMH though concerned her. 'Most of the time it was pleasant?' R'uann had yet to meet a pleasant EMH. Indeed, she found them invariably rude and obnoxious, with ideas that were usually elevated above that of even the senior Doctors themselves. Williams continued on... “We also have Counsellor Caras and her assistant, Counsellor Bruce, for any psychological support. That goes for you and your patients. As you may already know, you career choice come with a lot of hardship and stress. It is not a sign of weakness or failure to seek help. A lot of this can be a bit overwhelming.” R'uann nodded again, reassured that such help was there if needed. Not that she would of course. Indeed, she'd been in the thick of it during battlefield conditions during her time fighting for the resistance, so dealing with the needs of the crew of a ship of the line would be a doddle in comparison. Or so she assumed... “We also have Dr Kirien-Mias who is our medical researchers who also helps out in a crisis.” continued Williams, before then querying the Ensigns time at the Academy and whether or not they had experienced any ship time. R'uann gave Hythame the chance to jump in at that time, but when he didn't, she went first... "Well, I did a short placement on the Wolf" she answered, "just a few weeks of course. Since that point he had decided to be more careful with his food experimentation. “there is a dish from home which I do like. It’s called Spicy fish head broth. I am not sure why as it does not contain any fish heads, but it is a nice homely dish.” "Is there anything specific you'd like to know about the Spectre? Elani had dressed in a comfortable, loose gown in shades of blue, her dark green eyes a shade too light for the gown, but her dark hair set off the shimmering silk. “Kowalski?” She asked with a smile when he answered, allowing her to step into his domain. “I’m not sure that we have ever met formally, I am the Chief Counsellor, Elani Caras. I was, ah…” And Elani paused, a blush crawling from the neck of her gown up her neck towards her chin. “I was wondering if you would like to catch a meal on the starbase? Get to know each other a bit?” It was painfully obvious that Elani had no experience with asking someone out, and was trying her best. And that she was very attracted to him. “It’s ah. As the humans say, no harm no foul if you don’t want to. But if you do, I would desire to spend time in your company.” (reply Kowalski) (posted by Mel Gatling) (USS Spectre - Deck 16, MCO's Office - MCO, Mjr Bruce Kowalski - 14:31) Bruce had been up all night the night beforehand, and he was tired. Reports though did not write themselves, and the sooner that he got them done, the sooner he could probably get his head down for a while. The one thing that he didn't need right now though, was the hassle of O'Hara and Clements fighting on the mess deck and wrecking the replicator. Something that the Captain had not been too pleased about. Kowalski exhaled heavily at the thought of it, and then he settled back into his chair in a heavy slump. "What the hell" he muttered. "This can wait until later" Standing up, he made for the locker in the corner of the room, opened it up, and then withdrew the bottle of malt whiskey that he kept there for situations such as these, and then poured himself a glass. And that was when the knock to his door came... Kowalski took a quick sip of the clear brown liquid, savoured it briefly, and then placed the glass on top of the locker, expecting nothing now but yet more trouble from one of those that he was tasked to oversee. Probably another fight or something... Opening up the door though, things were most definitely not what he had expected, for standing in the doorway and looking decidedly glamourous now, was Caras, the ships Counsellor. Kowalski was momentarily taken aback, and for a brief second or two, he was unsure of just what to say. Was this a prank of some kind? Had word of O'Hara's and Clements fight raised concern amongst the psyche docs? Was he about to have to write yet 'another' report on the mindset of one of his testosterone filled grunts? "Kowalski?" said the vision in blue. "Counsellor?", said the Major. "To what, do I... umm, owe the pleasure?" Caras quickly continued on, her expression just a tad coy, if indeed the MCO could ever read Women that well. “I’m not sure that we have ever met formally", began the Counsellor. "I am the Chief Counsellor, Elani Caras. I was, ah... I was wondering if you would like to catch a meal on the Starbase? Get to know each other a bit?” she asked. And for the second time in the space of a minute, Kowalski was lost for words. Was the Counsellor hitting on him? A meal? On the Starbase? With him? "Umm, I'm not.... I mean", said Kowalski, turning about and then extending his hand awkwardly towards the locker in the corner of the room, his small glass of whiskey coming sharply into his gaze. Then he turned back to the vision in blue. Still lost for words. Caras filled in the gap... “It’s ah. As the humans say, no harm no foul if you don’t want to. But if you do, I would desire to spend time in your company.” said the Counsellor, smiling ever so sweetly now. So she WAS hitting on him! Kowalski didn't quite know how to react to that. Give him a barrack full of Marines about to go into a war-zone against some three eyed, tentacled beast from Tarralon IV, and he'd know exactly what to say. 'Give it hell, Men' But this was no grunt about to go into a war-zone against a three eyed, tentacled beast from Tarralon IV. This was a highly, nay, exceptionally beautiful Woman. And she was, how did she say it? 'Desiring to spend time in his company' Kowalski's hard exterior had suddenly melted, and then he smiled. "Sure" he said, "I mean, I was supposed to be writing reports but, well... I guess that can wait" (Reply Caras) (Posted by Alan) (USS Spectre – Deck 2, First Officers Office - FO, Cmdr. Capt T'Vhor had appointed Duke 3O. Tom had not experienced a structure where there was an official Third Officer. He wanted to see how Duke viewed his role in that function. The entry chime sounded. Tom answered "Come ,'. "Hi Duke, take a seat. Would you like to a drink?". (Reply Duke) "I've asked you here to get your perspective on the 3O slot. Be honest' Tom added. (Reply Duke) Tom listened intently as Duke talked. He then asked a question that had been bothering him. "As you're aware, Lt Palmer is 2O. This presents a slight problem - rank inversion. Do you have an issue should the situation arise where the CO and I are disabled of taking his orders ?". Jackson was pretty sure he knew Duke's answer. (Reply Duke) Tom smiled ad the 3O replied. "No sir, I'm fine," Duke said as he took a seat. He was planning on going to the station later for a happy hour so he didn't feel the need for a drink of any kind. He heard that there was a bar on the station that had actual cans of the arth drink Dr. Pepper. "I've asked you here to get your perspective on the 3O slot. Be honest' Tom added. "Well it isn't something I went out of my way to look for. Honestly, I view potential command as taking me away from engineering. I stepped up because I can't be selfish. I'll do as needed." "As you're aware, Lt Palmer is 2O. This presents a slight problem - rank inversion. Do you have an issue should the situation arise where the CO and I are disabled of taking his orders ?". "In the situation he becomes acting CO or FO I wold follow his orders. It would be no different then if I wasn't 3O. I would hope he would heed my counsel due to experience. However it doesn't change a thing. If he is CO or FO I follow orders regardless of rank." "I thought so Duke. Well done sir". Tom paused before asking his last question. "Last question Duke. Tell me about our cloaking system?". "What exactly do you want to know?" (reply Jackson) "I can tell you what it does, but I can't quite tell you how it works." His understanding of the electronics involved were sketchy at best. Duke started things off by "I can tell you what it does, but I can't quite tell you how it works. Tom looked at the CEO and nodded for Duke to go ahead. Duke hesitated and continued. "I know how it works sir, but the phase cloak is unique in the fleet. (No reply) (Posted by Bill West) (Starbase 19 - Observation Deck - Covert Agent, Tal'Daktar - 17:05) The Cardassian stood silent, gazing out of the observation window onto the docking platforms that housed the ships currently visiting SB19. He took a deep breath in, and then he exhaled, a hand reaching up towards his neck as though to ease the tension that was growing in the nape. The protuberance was minuscule and far smaller than those of the un-evolved breed that had often given them away beforehand, but the slight electric reaction that coiled down his spine though, reminded him of just why it was there, and what it actually meant. Tal placed his hands upon the ledge of the viewing port, and then continued to watch the little dance that the two Work Bee's seemed to be performing, as they removed the external plating from the port nacelle of the Spectre Class vessel nearest to him, in turn exposing it's internals to the three EVA equipped engineers nearby, who immediately scooted in to begin disassembling something within. His eyes then tracked the hull of the ship in question, it's name towards the rear, near to the shuttle bay hatches. 'NCC 8741 - The USS Spectre'... Tal closed his eyes briefly, an image forming in his head to the accompaniment of a pain, which quickly began to grow. He could feel the parasite within him of course. It never ceased, it's evolved tendrils wrapped around his spinal cord and urging him to carry out it's orders, and then tightening up again if he resisted. 'Note the registries. Report back to central. Acquire targets. Remain committed to the goal ' "No... No", said Tal, the pain growing again in response to his resistance as he bowed his head towards the window until his forehead contacted it. A clenched fist suddenly banged upon it next to his ear, and in an instance his resistance was quenched, his path once again clear. He hadn't even realised that it was his own fist that had impacted the window, but it had apparently done its job nonetheless. Tal turned about to glance at those meandering to and fro on the Observation Deck, his gaze, or previous actions hopefully not ones that would attract any attention as it had done on the Tempest when she had docked. Luckily though, nobody seemed to be at all interested in a lone civilian Cardassian, and so he drew up the hood of his tunic, bowed his head again, and then walked onwards and into the steady stream of those just going about their business. Once the door -swooshed- closed behind her, she paused and let out a deep breath. ~The Spectre~ she thought to herself silently. ~Captain...T'Vhor wasn't it?~ she pondered, momentarily, before making her way across the green from the admin facility to the dorms. ~Ensign~ she liked that so much better than Cadet. Back at her quarters, while packing her few meager belongings, she tried to recall anything she could of the Spectre. "Well?" A voice called from the hall. She turned to see Bill Saxony, another Engineering Cadet, leaning in the door frame with his arms folded and ankles crossed. "The Spectre," she said, eyes beaming and grinning like a Cheshire. "You?" she asked, laying the folded sweater on top of the other things and closing the case. "Nothing confirmed yet," Bill replied. "But it's looking like maybe the Paladin." "Fingers crossed," Katrina said, then asked. "Who's the Captain?" "Guy named Gibbs," Bill answered. Bill's family had been Starfleet for four generations, so he knew things and people common Cadets wouldn't. "First command, I think," he shrugged. "I'm hoping it'll be easier being the new guy since there's a new Captain." "Easier to suck up, you mean," she teased, and he wagged a finger at her. "I'm gonna miss you," he said, seriously. "Yeah," she concurred. "I'm gonna miss you, too." Bill was almost 30 years her junior, but be had a maturity she seldom saw in men twice her age. Growing up Starfleet probably had something to do with it. He smiled awkwardly, then turned to go, "Well, I better..." "Hang on a sec," she interrupted. "What can you tell me about the Spectre? It's Captain T'Vhor, right?" Bill scratched at his left ear, and answered, "Yeah. Last I heard they were supposed to be at Starbase 19. When do you leave?" "1900 hours," she said. "Computer. Bring up all available records for USS Spectre," he spoke, moving toward the wall display. As screen after screen of data and images populated the display, he chuckled softly. "Looks like you'll have something to keep you occupied on the voyage." Some time later- [[USS Spectre is a Federation Starfleet starship of the Constitution-class refit configuration, equipped with a linear dilithium-controlled matter/antimatter reaction assembly. Main Engineering is lodged at the point where the vertical core is linked with the horizontal intermix chamber, occupying the forward section of Deck 15, with supportive systems located on the decks above and below, surrounding the core. This complex, radically new design in intermix technology, provides operational power for the impulse drive system and furnishes enough additional energy to power all other shipboard systems. Both matter and antimatter for this chamber are contained in a series of magnetic bottles, which are housed in pods at the base of the intermix shaft. The impulse drive system is a twin-port fusion reactor engine, capable of velocities at least 0.8c.]] "Computer. Freeze program," LaBrea ordered to the audio system. She'd been through this before, as well as dozens of other technical manuals and scores of databases. She felt as comfortable as she ever would about the ship that would be her new assignment- her new home for the foreseeable future, but she was still anxious. She'd relocated and been re-homed countless times in her life, but this was new. This was important. This was... real. "Computer. Resume program." She went back to listening. A couple hours later, she received a chirp over the comm. =/\= We'll be docking at Starbase 19 within the hour. =/\= "Acknowledged," she replied, then closed out the program and prepared to debark. ... The shuttle craft from the ship to Starbase 19 had a bit of a bumpy landing. The Junior Officer piloting the vehicle blushed and apologized, but Katrina waved him off with a, "No harm done." An Ensign assisted her out of the shuttle and she stretched while he lifted her case from the hold. "Thank you, sir," she stated formally, then asked, "I'm looking for the USS Spectre? Do you know where I can find it?" "Docking port 3," he answered, gesturing across the room. "This is Shuttlebay 2. You need to go through those doors, take a right to the Turbolift, up one level and follow the corridor around. You can't miss it. I'll get this loaded for you." "Thanks," she smiled, then made her way to the Ship. "Permission granted," the officer replied. "Ensign quarters are four decks below. Turbolifts down that corridor," he added, gesturing to the side. "Welcome aboard." Katrina nodded and made her way to the 'lifts. She found the Ensign Common Quarters easily enough, and when the doors -swished- open, she smiled and took a step in. Their breakfast had been broken up but she was determined that they needed to sort out the quarters situation before they officially moved onto the Spectre the next day. She had quickly moved around the moderately large lounge room, replicating snack foods and various beverages from all around the universe so that everyone would have something that they were familiar with. She truly wanted this to work and she truly did not want her Betazoid mother to come and make her live in their family quarters. Elizabeth had changed from her flight suit to a red lounging suit, replicated from earth fashions of the 1970s. With her honey brown hair and betazoid eyes, she looked older than her true age. But she had seen too much, done too much. Left with her thoughts, Elizabeth remembered being on board the Nimitz, the battles during the civil war, the death of her father, John Wilson the FO of a Starbase in a flight accident. Her thoughts wandered to one of the worst battles on the Mystique when all the Betazoids on the ship joined mental hands so to speak in order to overwhelm a malignant entity. One of her closest friends had lost her Mother who just happened to be the Captain to the mental strain. The Captain had recovered but the First Officer, the Vulcan Saleke had taken over the command and the Mystique was retired due to .. well that was a fleet secret, that an alien lived in the computer core. There was Betty of course, the Xenobotanist whom she'd met in the Arboretum tending the plants. Then there was the Barkeep in Ten Forward and her cheeky little friend, Tommy the Sammead. Later in the day she'd met her boss, Commander Williams, and then of course there was Hythame, the interesting Selkie whom she still had not yet had the chance to really get to know. And now she was here, in the Ensigns common room looking at the few that had gathered there already, some of whom she was familiar with from her arrival. Her eye though had strayed now to a rather large spread of food upon tables being tended to by a Woman in red that she had not met before. R'uann moved slowly towards the table nodding to the occasional familar face and smiling as she went. Then she made a bee line to the end of it where she spied something rather delicious and pleasantly familiar. ~Is that Hasperat?~ she thought to herself. ~By the Prophets, it is!~ R'uann looked at the Woman in red and then attempted to make her presense known with a slight cough, placing her hand before her mouth as she did so of course. He checked his uniform and sounded the entrance chime. Once he entered and reported to the captain. "Sir, I have a few items I'd like to discuss with you" Tom said. (Reply T'Vhor) Tom went forward "I see we have been equipped with a cloaking system. Since, in your incapacitation, I would succeed you in command, I need to be well versed in this system. Don't you agree?'. (Reply T'Vhor) "I've spoken to Duke Williams. He's given me a sketchy outline of the system but there appears to be a security issue which limits my full access to the system information. I request this be removed Sir" Tom said (Reply T'Vhor) "Lastly, could you brief me on this last mission. I've read the letter get but I want your taken in it Captain" Tom asked. (Reply T'Vhor) (Posted by Bill West) (USS Spectre - CO's Office - CO, Captain T'Vhor - 09:01) The door to the Captains office slid aside, and in the opening stood Jackson, the ships new First Officer. The Vulcan hybrid CO bade him enter and then settled back into his chair as the FO approached. "Sir, I have a few items I'd like to discuss with you" he said. The Captain nodded and then gestured with a hand towards the seat opposite him for the Man to take it. "Please, go ahead" he answered. The FO then began querying their phased cloak and its operation, the query itself culminating in a request for clearance for full access of the cloaking device. The Captain raised an eyebrow at that. Not because he felt that the request was unwarranted, indeed, it was, but because as the First Officer of the ship, and with all the ramifications associated to that, Jackson would have that clearance anyway. It was a given... "You are the ships First Officer, Tom", said the Captain, preferring to use the Man's Christian name now in order to establish a good rapport with him. "The clearance that you are requiring would be yours anyway. Do you not already have that clearance?" enquired the Captain. The FO paused just briefly, and then continued on... "I've spoken to Duke Williams. He's given me a sketchy outline of the system but there appears to be a security issue which limits my full access to the system information. I request this be removed Sir" reiterated the FO. "Of course", said the Captain. "Consider it done. As I said though, as the FO, you have that right. Is there anything else Commander?" The FO paused again before explaining that he wanted the Captains personal take on their previous mission. Why he wanted that, the CO was unsure. Tom had the reports. He'd even accessed the ships logs and gone over the semantics of it all. Was this a 'Human' thing? A need for personal connection and the experience that that might offer. T'Vhor had seen this in many Humans over the course of time, so perhaps that was what it was. A reassurance thing perhaps. The Captain cleared his throat... "I'm not sure what you want me to say exactly", he began. "We encountered the trans-dimensional vessel. We set out to explore it, but with 90% of our systems off-line, we were hampered from the very start. And then of course there were the doppelgangers" (Reply Jackson, IYW) "A species that could mimic our crew at will", said the Captain, quirking his head slightly to one side as he pondered the notion of what had occurred. Nobody could be trusted from that point on. It made progress difficult. "It was.... most unnerving" he added. NRPG: Room for more here... RPG: (Reply Jackson) (Posted by Alan) (USS Spectre - CO's Office - FO, Cmdr Tom Jackson - 09:03) Tom and T'Vhor were meeting to discuss several questions Tom had raised. Tom hadn't been given full access to the specifics of the phased cloak. Duke Williams had given him the breifest outline of its function. The Skipper seemed surprised at Tom's question replying, "The clearance that you are requiring would be yours anyway. Do you not already have that clearance?" enquired the Captain. Tom thought for a moment and replied "No Sir. I do not have it". T'Vhor assured Tom he now had it. Tom then moved to his second question. Jackson asked about the previous mission. The Skipper collected his thoughts before replying. Tom Jackson listened closely. This was unique to his experience. What safeguards were in place to alert the Spectre to any future appearances? "Sir, What safeguards are in place to alert the Spectre to any future appearances? Tom asked (Reply T'Vhor) Tom didn't like what was forming in his mind. (Reply. Not needed) (Posted by Bill West) (USS Spectre - CO's Office - CO, Captain T'Vhor - 09:04) "Sir, What safeguards are in place to alert the Spectre to any future appearances?" the FO had asked. The Captain had described the situation regarding the encounter with the trans-dimensional vessel as best he could, and the ramifications of it of course. The First Officer though seemed to be having some concerns now as to their future security. It was a logical query, and even though perhaps just a little overcautious in its approach, it was expected of a First Officer inquiring about things with his commanding officer for the very first time. That said though, the Captain could see that this might take a little time now, which prompted a cold drink to ease an already drying throat. ~I must have engineering take a look at the environment setting in this room~ he thought... T'Vhor stood and moved briefly towards the replicator. "Orange juice, chilled" he said, and the replicator performed its magic and materialised a glass of the said beverage. "Can I get you anything Tom?", he asked. (Reply Jackson) NRPG: Assuming a yes here but can change if need be... RPG: The Captain returned to his table and retook his seat. "First and foremost", he began, taking a sip of his orange juice. "The species we encountered did not give any indication that they were hostile towards us, and although it initially put us at a distinct disadvantage, most notably in regards the loss of two years of time, it appeared to be more concerned with our welfare than we had first expected. For example, it limited our own timeframe to an hour or two at most to prevent any kind of temporal shock, and it ensured that our life support was never compromised. (Reply Jackson) "I understand your concern, Commander", said the Captain. "The details of the encounter though are logged, the conditions and description of the circumstances, and the vessel itself, are also noted for future reference." said the Captain. "I do believe that we have made the necessary precautions to alert any future crews that might encounter similar circumstances" (Reply Jackson) (Posted by Alan) (USS Spectre - Deck 2, First Officers Office - FO, Cmdr Tom Jackson - 10:00) The pace of things were picking up! Days were stretching into 12 plus hours in length. The phased cloaking system access had been approved for Tom. He realized the feeling Duke Williams had relayed to him. Tom was pretty sure the rest of his career would be spent on the Spectre. In a way this was reassuring. But for a brief time he'd been a starship Skipper. The honors and perks a SF captain got were wonderful. The responsibility was heavy to be true on the other side. He sighed heavily. He was grateful for all who had stuck their careers and lived there on the line for Tom Jackson over the years. Most importantly, he was grateful for Dahoie and his kids. There were no prosiners in the brig, and he was reading the reports of the secuity guards on their rounds. An idea came to him. He began to have the timelines of the various patrols charted on the screen. He noticed that some took more time going through personnel quarters. Each person did things consistently. Even the "slowpokes" After a while, he noticed a dangerous pattern that could open up the ship to boarders during battle. H wrote a report to go with it, and when he finished it, he tapped his commbadge and said, "Darpeg to Signos" (Reply Signos) "Sir, I am sending you a follow up report on the state of the readiness of the department." (Reply Signos) "I did sent to your email." (Reply Signos) (Written by Gary Dupree) (USS Spectre – Ten Forward – FO, Cmdr Tom Jackson – 15:00) Tom was in need of a break after the talk with the Commodore. The answers he got weren't what he was hoping to hear. The Caitian waiter approached Tom and asked "Your order Commander?" Tom snapped back to reality. "I'll have a roast beef sandwich and iced tea please." Tom thanked the waiter. His Ferengi step-dad, Pez, had sent him a coded messsge. The contents, after decoding, alerted Tom to the fact that the next mission had ties back to an event around the time of the Federation civil war. Tom was in the Academy during the last phase of the conflict. After the academy, Tom was assigned to the Nimitz under CAPT. Devon Sash. A small, wry smile crept across his red haired face. Oh Lord was he a raw ensign. Full of piss and vinegar. His career had taken many ups and downs since thst era. Tom's thoughts returned to the present time. Try as he might, he couldn't get any data on that enigma. The security protocols on that Dara was far above his. Tom Jackson didn't like puzzles.
