How, according to your own thoughts, does this assignment fit into your overall goals?" asked the COUNS. “The only goal I set for myself Counsellor was to serve Starfleet and the Federation to the best of my abilities. Logic dictates that my assignment here to one of Starfleet’s most important facilities is due reward for my service so far, they would not have assigned me here unless they concluded I was the best officer for the job,” replied L’Tal. L’Tal waited patiently whilst Lono entered his remarks into her PADD before she continued. "I'd like a sample of your handwriting, please. Just copy the sentences at the top." When he glanced at her, she explained, "I don't interpret your handwriting. But I do find it helpful to compare handwriting samples from each evaluation. They sometimes contain changes that indicate psychological stress." L’Tal complied with her request without delay and handed her back the PADD. "I use a method from Aspect Psychology to help map each person's psychological profile. I want you to describe here what you consider to be the main Aspects of your psyche. I expect that logic will be a strong component," stated Lono with a smile. "Then arrange a map or diagram of each aspect, according to your own evaluation of their importance. These can assume any form -- perhaps a stairway, or a group of circles, or interlaced triangles. You can work as long as you like on this, or as short a time as you need." L’Tal started by listing what he considered to be his main psychological aspects. Logic, commitment, dedication, honesty, selflessness, emotional detachment, inquisitiveness. He then drew a pyramid to represent himself and used each of the aspects as bricks to build the pyramid. Logic, of course, was the base of his pyramid followed by emotional detachment; dedication & commitment formed the next tier, then honesty & selflessness, and finally inquisitiveness. He handed the PADD back to the COUNS. (Reply Lono, Any) (Otono Medical Center, Kahila Lono, 15:30) Kahila Lono went into the office the medical worker pointed out. "Hello again, Doctor. I'm sorry to disturb your lunch." (Reply Cambridge) "I know how busy you are. We'll make this as quick and painless as possible - or is that your line?" Kahila laughed, to make sure he knew she was joking. ~He seems the sort to appreciate a little kidding around.~ She handed him two PADDS she had brought with her from the counseling office. "I'd like a sample of your handwriting on this one, so I can make a time-line comparison." She indiecated one PADD. "Then on the other, I'd like for you to make a diagram of the various aspects of your personality. The diagram can be any way that you want to place the aspects, a way in which you think they inter-relate, or perhaps a hierarchical arrangement. It's a method I've studied, which enables a counselor to better understand the client's self concept." Kahila smiled, then sat across from the doctor, waiting. (Reply Cambridge) When he'd finished his tasks and handed her the PADDs, she said, "Have you had any changes in personal functioning - such as dream or sleep changes, or problems with concentration?" (Reply Campbridge) Kahila thanked the doctor for his cooperation, and left the office. She hurried from Ontono, wondering if her new assistants had scheduled any further appointments. (Starbase Valhalla, FO/Counseling Offices, Kahila Lono, 16:30) Kahila came into the outer counseling office, and saw that her assistant Rose Riley was scanning notes into a computer she'd moved into an alcove there. "Very good, Rose," She said. Her other assistant, Meera, came from Kahila's inner office, saying. "Ensign Longfellow called in for an appointment and I asked him to come at 16:35. The timing seems to be working out all right." "Yes it is. I think I really will have these reports ready for Admiral Jopek by 19:00. Both of you can leave now. Thank you. I'll leave messages tomorrow if I need further help." Just as the two assistants were leaving, Ensign Longfellow walked in for his appointment. Kahila noticed he had a bit of a rumpled appearance, and she sensed he didn't feel at ease. ~Well, of course he has not been on Valhalla very long. This is his first counseling appointment here.~ She smiled to put him at ease, and gestured for him to sit down. "Thank you for making the appointment, Ensign. Perhaps we will begin by your telling me of anything that might be bothering you, such as unusual stress, or changes in sleep, dreaming?" Out," he said as he paused and changed the settings of his tricorder for a moment. Stepping out into the corridor he placed the tricorder against one of the panels with computer access. "Computer transfer all unread messages from data stored at Ens.(jg) Longfellow's workstation and quarters," he said as the data uploaded into the tricorder's library bank and he scanned through it with a wince. =/\= Longfellow to Counseling office, I'll need an appointment as soon as possible it seems, =/\= he said after tapping his badge. There were more repairs to be done to the USS Spectre and parts that he would still need to check on to make sure that they had been fabricated properly for the ship before they were to be installed. However, an urgent message from the FO/Counselor could somewhat outweigh all that if it meant that he'd be behind a desk or inside even a short while longer. His thoughts wandering to the medical staff he wondered how the woman he'd run across earlier was doing even as he physically jogged towards the turbolift to head to Deck 16. Silently he listened for the reply from the Counseling office. It was Pierce. She visualized her office, as it would look in dim lighting. She decided not to try to transmit to him her new perceptions. There would be time to tell him of that, later. ~On my way.~ Pierce replied. ~I'm quite relieved to know that, Pierce.~ Kahila's anxiety, which had diminished greatly with the discovery of her full empathic abilities, was now completely quelled. Surely, they -- and all of Valhalla's personnel -- would be able to cope, be able to fix whatever had happened. "Admiral, Pierce will be here very soon," Kahila told him. Then she thought, ~Perhaps he'll wonder how I know that!~ When Pierce arrived at the office, he came in and pulled out two glowrods, tossing them to Kahila and Admiral Jopek. "And the Security Chief said: 'Let there be light'" He said lightly. Kahila laughed with delight at his inventiveness. "You're a definite asset in any emergency." She looked toward the admiral then, awaiting his next decision. Carefully he rechecked the seals on the suit before moving over to examine the Worker Bee before heading outside to work on the external damage to the USS Spectre. It looked to Longfellow as if someone had attempted to land part of the ship on a rock, but he knew that it was more likely an impact of some sort of space debris. After all the ship hadn't really been designed for a planetary landing. "Computer, run a standard system check on the predesignated Worker Bee," Hank ordered as he opened the canopy of the Worker Bee just before the lights in the area went out. With a frown Hank looked around and listened for the computer to verify his last command before he checked the panels inside the Worker Bee, but there was no response. Snatching his helmet off he stalked back towards the door in the darkness. He knew somewhat the location he'd started from and that the path he was walking had been clear a moment ago. Reaching around he started to try activating his tricorders, the SEWG's systems and his combadge before his foot bumped the wall and he stopped with his hands out to locate the door. ~Power drain or dampening field,~ he wondered idly as he fumbled around in the dark for the panel next to the door and then for the power pin in his engineering kit. Flipping the little bar out he locked the system into manual since it too was without power and started to unfasten the bolts on the panel before him. He pondered lighting a match but it would go out within seconds and he only carried four in his tube with his cigar for the day. ~Getting caught with that on a new assignment would probably be against the local rules and regs,~ he theorized as he slipped the first bolt from the panel. There wasn't a need for quick movement on this, but Kevel felt like it should be done as thoroughly as possible. And that's pretty much how he was doing it. Piece by piece, inch by inch was the motto going through his head for the moment. Until the klaxons and red alert signs hit the screens. Quickly, the Rear Admiral stood up as the room went into alert. Officers quickly moved to their stations as Kevel moved to the center of the room, watching the screens. Whatever train wreck they had detected, it wasn't something pleasant. Gerry turned in his seat as the room quieted with officers running their reports and doing their best to figure out what they needed to be doing. "Report!" Gerry brought up his PADD and looked to Kevel with eyes wide and a inch of fear hiding somewhere behind the man's face. The RADM raised an eyebrow. "All Stratops stations are reporting that Valhalla, All Utopia Planitia stations, Otono and Mars based facilities and all starships in the area have all lost power. All attempts at communications have failed and from what our sensors have picked up, emergency, backup and auxiliary power has failed at all the stations and ships. There has been no confirmation on the condition of any in orbit. We have confirmed two crashes of shuttles and there appear to be three more shifting into the atmosphere." Gerry ended his report as the klaxons echoed and Kevel exhaled. "Well...holy shit. Gerry, all hands to emergency stations. I need to know what the hell happened out there and I need to know fast. Find out. And Gerry, put us full active. Pull everyone off and put them on. We need everyone on stations. Hold us at Red Alert. Kevel to Lee...emergency channels..." "Lee, we've got a whizbanger. In the distance was a blue speck, it was Earth, looking larger and brighter than usual, thanks to the absence of any lights or other illumination provided by the ships, stations and facilities around Utopia Planitia. Nothing was working, no power to anything, not even the lights that were suppose to work in any eventuality. ~ Boy, it's warm in here ~ Bob shed a layer of clothing, luckily for everyone else; no-one else could see him squirm out of his clothes while still lying down on the floor. His head hit the floor and he was looking up the ceiling, smiling at the small light coming from it, it was jumping around like a small lighting bolt, it darted around the ship, down the walls, across his body and was gone. "That's okay.", he said, still smiling and trying not to laugh out loud too hard, ". see you later!" The pilot fell asleep, still totally naked. The admiral thought some more. "Chemicals seem to be unaffected.",he said, waving his glow rod around some, ". so if we assume that this is a massive dampening field, a chemical reaction would still operate normally. Bellephoron and Ensign Morag MacRath - 13:00) Percival was accessing his computer when the door to his office opened " Mind, if yon's not in there, Tommy, you'll owe me dinner! Something fancy, mind! Not your usual effort! Now where's that sexy lad o'mine hiding hissen?" Percival looked up at the woman's voice and regarded her sternly as she entered and came to attention, trying to hide a sandwich. In silence Percival continued regarding her as his second in command blushed. Her lips started to move but until she cleared her throat no sound was forthcoming. Finally she managed to say: "Welcome back, Lt Bellephoron. I trust you had a good journey?... Och, I'm sorry about the office. I'm afraid Ms Dervin was looking for something she'd misplaced before she left. I did my best to get it straight again but I'm afraid I didnae quite have the time to get it exactly as you left it." Percival continued to stare at Morag for a minute and noticed her starting to wriggle. "As you were, Ensign." He got up from his chair and walked over to the pile of reports, laying on the sidetable. Retrieving them, he walked back to his desk and sat down. "Let's see, Science project 41/53/2b" he read out as he opened the file. "No progress." He closed the file and lay it to one side, picking up another. "Science project 41/55/3a......no progress." He lay the file neatly on top of the other and picked up another one. "Project 41/55/7d .... unexpected hindrance preventing breakthrough." Percival lay the file to the side and looked up at the woman. "I would be correct in assuming that the other files would relay me similar messages, would I not? If the overview file on the computer is correct, which might not be, I must grant, since it has not been updated for two days, there was little progress if any progress at all, would that be a correct statement, Ensign MacRath?" Percival lay the files aside and made a gesture when Morag wanted to say something. "Perhaps during my absence a new regime has been put in place? A new procedure stating that whilst the departmental head is away on leave, no work has to be carried out? That, in fact, leave of the departmental head equates to a period of holiday?" Percival shook his head. " To be quite frank, I do not mind allowing other officers from other departments to rampage through my office whilst I am away. Why should I? I have nothing to hide. Nor would I mind if during my absence my office would be used for relieve of certain sexual urges. What I DO mind, however, is the fact that a period of laxness was allowed to enter this department during my absence. We have a mission to fulfill, a mission of vital importance to the continued success of the Federation. And I, for one, would have been quite grateful to see that whilst I was away the hunt for knowledge had continued." Again Percival shook his head. "But alas, it was not to be. I see that there is still a lot to do in this department. And I accept that that is to be blamed on me. I did not succeed in creating a well thriving, fully functioning department, I did not instill everyone with the correct spirit." Percival sighed. "It is regrettable that one has to face one's imperfections in such a glaring fashion but at least I can be thankful that it was so evident. I will have to come up with a new strategy and see how well that will succeed. In the mean time, Ensign, unless there is something you wish to relay to me, you would do well to update all reports and present them to me for my perusal." Morag, who had listened to the diatribe with a certain amount of frustration at not being allowed to speak and not a little sense of injustice, took a deep breath. As usual when she was emotional her accent became more pronounced. "Aye, I have something to 'relay' to ye, Sir. If ye read the overview file all the way through ye would have seen that the reason that no progress has been made in your absence has a lot more to do with the fact that this station was attacked by terrorists, many people were killed and ALL remaining parisonnel were drafted into either helping with the repairs or onto the ship which pairsued yon terrorists. In addition, we were told that we had to take over the work of Lt Dairvin, who volunteered to go on the ship as an engineering officer. We were further told that HER department's work was to take precedence over ours, and once she upped and left, that just got worse. Now correct me if I'm wrong, Sir, but I don't remember reading anywhere in Starfleet regulations that an Ensign left in charge of a department whilst her boss is awa' can tell an Admiral to tak' a running jump because her boss won't like it when he gets back from his wee jolly. And before ye complain about the overview file not being updated, Sir, ye might like to take into account the fact that this department has been working overtime to try to catch up on the work that we missed. And pairhaps, instead o' jumping to conclusions ye might have ASKED me fairst. Howsoever, ye'd be right in one thing, Sir. The responsibility is that of the pairson in charge and that would be me, Sir. So if ye want me to resign then I will." She was about to indicate that she had finished when something else Percival had said suddenly hit home. "And whet d'ye mean by using ye'r office fer 'relieve of certain sexual urges' ? Man, naebody'd dae a thing like that!" she exclaimed. Percival regarded the woman for a moment. "Naebody'd dae," he said, "pairhaps. Ensign, you are upset. Good for you. Perhaps I have been a bit hasty in my assessment and the right spirit might be there after all. As for the Admiral, I wonder why he did not relay that information to me when I met him earlier. It might explain his hasty retreat, I must admit. So, Dervin has finally left? I am afraid that I have to say that I am not terribly surprised. She seemed to lack a certain....scientific skill? But to demand that we take over the work from another department is quite a different matter. I will relay my thoughts on the matter to the Admiral once I have given the matter some more thought. I suspect it is only of a temporary nature but still....we have been assigned here for theoretical work, not to clean up after another department. I take it the work-structure at the Warp technology department is similar to Ms. Dervin's attitude towards scientific research? Unstructured and impulsive? In that case I should be surprised to see any scientists in this department at all." Percival looked at the computer screen. "I am meeting the Admiral in a short while. After that, I will investigate the workload of this department further. I think it would be opportune to examine the warp technology department as well. Please have an update on backlog and project standings ready by 5. I wish to hold a meeting with you, Mr. Beresford and one representative from the Warp technology Department in this office at 5 so that we can make a structured analysis of the problems facing us and come up with a revised plan of action. Now if you would not mind, your lunch is dripping on my floor. Please see to it that it will be cleaned up during my absence. Oh and Ensign, any Admiral worth his salt would have appreciated it if you would inform him of the problems his orders would cause. And if the Admiral is not worth his salt, what matter what he thinks? You would have received my full backing and I would not hesitate to take the matter to the highest authority, and as a matter of fact, neither should you. We are here to do our job and that's what we will be doing. Dismissed, Ensign." "Thank you, sir, the update will be ready for you and I will make sure that ye'r office is spick and span before ye return, sir," Morag said, coming to attention and turning to leave. Just before she left, she turned back. "It's good to have you back, sir." And she actually meant it. Percival and the others who had made the journey through the dimensions were now the closest she had to a family. "Surprisingly enough, Ensign, I would consider it to be good to be back, But let me implore you, PLEASE use Federation standard, we DO have an image to uphold, you know?" "Aye, Sir." (reply by any) (posted by Liz and Adrie Geuken) (Otono Medical Center, CMO Cambridge- 13:35) "I'm fine, Dr. Cambridge, sir," Maxwell nodded, running his readings. He frowned. "Well, you've had your fun of impacting to your cartilage and joints. You've also got some lung tissue damage from what as best as I can figure, is cigar smoke..." Before the young man could speak, Cambridge held up his hand. "Don't tell me excuses young man. Your body is what you have to live with until you die and that lung tissue damage isn't something to be coy about. I'll give you a clear bill, but I want you back down here as soon as possible. I need to get you healed up. We've got some new things that can help you and it's rather painless and even sometimes quite fun to do. Am I clear?" Mac smiled and clapped the man on his shoulder. "Good on you man, good on you. I'll see you back soon enough...good day.." As the officer left, Cambridge pulled a PADD from his pocket and grinned broadly. It had his patients medical file, full and complete. (Otono Medical Center, CMO Cambridge- 13.45) "Lt, Bellephoron to CMO. Sir, I have been informed to report in for a medical evaluation. When would it be suitable for Sir to see me?" "Anytime Mr Bellephoron, anytime. Just head down to Mars and look for me...Cambridge out." (Otono Medical Center - CMO Cambridge- 1350) Horacio took a few sip of it " Yes, Sir, that's it, I'm fearing Doctors, Counsellors, nurses, in one word anything related to medical and when I'm confronted to a medical environment I loose completely my self-control. I'm suffering from vertigo, claustrophobia and I'm also hypochondriac " he explained with difficulties. Maxwell reached for the cup and refilled it, handing it back to the young man, keeping his medical tricorder at his side, but still taking readings from the now very worried officer. "Did this start recently my good man?" " No it has started several years ago on Bolarus IX when I was a child, I was doing climbing with some friends when a mass of fallen rocks had strucken me and I've fallen from thirty meters directly on the ground. I've spend three hours under tons of rocks and theh almost a year in a hospital, first in the intensive care and after in a recoveruy unit." Maxwell nodded, his respect and understanding of this officers fears were well grounded and completely understood. To still be in Starfleet and be able to handle the nightmares or fears that would cripple any man were amazing. Cambridge pulled his tricorder back up. "You've told no one of this before I suspect?" He refilled the water cup for the third time, knowing that keeping his patient hydrated was another challenge. " I've always succeeded hiding those fears, I've spend all my career in the shadow, avoiding away missions, promotions,.... but here on Valhalla, due to the understaffed situation of the Science Department I couldn't refuse going on the last away mission. After that all the events happened very quickly, I've received a promotion, making me the highest ranked in the Department, obliging me to participate to the senior staff meeting and than send to this medical examination. And I've still to undergo the Counselor examination. I think our FO will have some work with me." ~Just be careful, she's a hot one to trot...~ "Now that I've told you all that, I think it has put an end to my career, the Admiral won't certainly keep a officer suffering from so much fears." For a moment the doctor kept his silence, looking the now very exposed man in front of him in the eyes. He shook his head and sighed deeply. Then, smiling as warmly as he did everyday, he touched a few buttons on a PADD and handed it to the nervous officer. "You are cleared and marked as healthy young sir. My only requirement is that you visit my office at least once a week where I check you out. It may be that being around this place more often will get you used to the medical staff. You have my confidence." He helped his patient off the table and shook his hand. "Now get out there, there's a office and a duty awaiting you. Dismissed." Cambridge watched him leave and smiled. This is why he did what he did. (Mars - Otono Medical - Otono Central- 18.30) The exams were going along as quickly as possible. There had been a few problems here and there, but for the most part, most crew had made their way out of the place in a reasonable amount of time. Cambridge sat at the reception desk at Otono Central, running through reports with several of his assistants. Suddenly all power died. Not just died. Went out. The lights, the stations, the communications, everything. "What the hell!?" Maxwell stood and ran into the courtyard, just in time to see two shuttles careening to the ground, bounce several times and explode in flames. Jonathon Stone quickly came running out, something he rarely did. "Cambridge..." He turned to the man. "Intensive care power has failed. All power on Mars, has failed. Our backup generators are not firing. We're got over 150 people in intensive care. We're going to lose them if we can't get power...." The Chief Medical Officer looked out to the fires now raging from the shuttles. More was bound to happen as others were pulled into the atmosphere. Whatever had happened, was about to get ugly. "Run someone over to Otono Stormcentre with our back up scalpels and other medical supplies. Began distributing the emergency supplies now. Break open our backups as well. We're going to be down to 21st century medical practice. It's going to get very bloody. Have all Alert Centre people moved to the other buildings. And for goodness sakes, try and keep em calm." Stone nodded and quickly ran off. Cambridge looked to the sky. ~And then the darkness came and consumed all beings left to remain and in that darkness took their souls into it's own...~ -------------- (Starbase Valhalla, Jopek's Inner Office, Admiral Jopek - 13.55) Jopek was outlying the plan for the new warp engine to the TSO, who was now the highest ranking officer at the ADB. I have just returned to find the work-ethos in my department to have changed to questionable proportions and would have thought the highest priority to be placed on returning the efficiency of my Department to its peak value. However, I understand the urgency of the matter and will do my utmost to ensure the proper fitting of said device. Could Sir enlighten me as what type of vessel said device is to be placed on? A research vessel perhaps? Or a cruiser? Or perhaps a trading ship? I assume that it must be a Starfleet vessel. And if there is a preference for type of ship, would Sir kindly enlighten me as when such vessel is to dock with Valhalla Starbase?" "Lt. Bellephoron, you'll find the overall specifications of the ship on your PADD, but simply, we are looking for a small ship with a small crew but a power source high enough to general the inter-dimensional warp field, we've already ruled out some classes of ship, including the Defiant class." "This is a classified mission so, a Starfleet ship is best but I'll leave it to your judgment. A full manifest of the ships currently in range can be obtained from the FO or the Operations Officer, Lt L'Tal." Jopek watched as the TSO, after some more comments, neatly extracted himself from the Ready Room. ~ Interesting fellow ~ (Starbase Valhalla, FO/Counsellor's Office, Admiral Jopek - 18.40) "Admiral, Pierce will be here very soon," Kahila told him. "Excellent.", he said as he monitored increased mental abilities in the FO. "Security, near as I can tell, is still fine. I've issued firearms out of my personal collection to all security officers whom I've come across, as well as glowrods to all people I've come across." he told the Admiral. "And I've sent two of my men to retrieve door-openers and more glowrods and take them to Engineering, and another to climb up to Ops." The Admiral brought up the rod to his face as he spoke. "Do you happened to know the status of the senior crew, where is everyone? We have to assume that everyone has the same problems as us, no power, light or heat. We've got ships floating on inertia, medical bays with no power, if someone wanted to invade Earth; this is the time to do it." (Reply from the FO or 2O) The admiral thought some more. "Chemicals seem to be unaffected.",he said, waving his glow rod around some, ". so if we assume that this is a massive dampening field, a chemical reaction would still operate normally." "So, what we need is a chemically based power source capable of running one of our portable generators. just when we need our TSO, he's on Mars!" "We'll have to continue our plans, secure the vital areas of the station as best you can, you'll have to issue broad orders to the people we send down there as further communication won't be possible." Jopek looked at the two senior officers. "Pierce, I want you to head for the Shuttlebay, see if you can get a chemical engine on one of the small shuttle pods operational. Take it outside, and visually scan the area, see if you can spot any power sources. I know it's a big solar system, use any optical system you can find to help. Lt Lono, stay here and continue to brief officers and their staff as they arrive and assign people to vital areas, keep a list, it could be hours before we make any progress on this problem." Jopek walked towards the door. "I'll relocate to Operations; see if I can coordinate things up there. Any other suggestions?" (Reply from the FO or 2O) "Lets get to work.", he said as he walked out and towards the closest turbolift shaft to commence his climb up to OPS. "Ensign, good job. I'll see to it that you get a commendation. You'll have her unending gratitude, to be sure." The man had said but Hank shook his head slightly. "Sir, with all do respect, I didn't do anything for a commendation, sir," he said before moving back to let the medics take care of one of their own. Stepping back he watched with concern in his eyes for a moment before catching himself. ~No concern. No worries. Nothing but the job,~ he thought to correct himself. "I should return to my duties, sir," he said as he took an at-ease stance once more. Hank knew he had a lot to do before seeing the counselor.
