She wasn't interested in the general chatter in any case, only looking for any indication of a potential threat to herself or ship. Then she felt the knocking on her mental shields. ::You seem very familiar:: The message came with no indication of who was sending it. Eva cut through the chatter and back tracked the message in the blink of an eye. Her eyes narrowed when she found the mind that sent the message. A mind she knew. A mind she had never expected to encounter again. ::You died,:: She replied, ::Mr. Isengard. How is it that you have come back from the dead?:: --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Hades, Ready Room, CO Captain Eva Straton, 15:19) "I'll alert the crew immediately. The ship is in good shape, the engines are nearing full efficiency and systems are running near optimal. I expect that by the time they get through with us we will be primed to go to warp. I'll make sure the investigative teams get the readings we took before, during and after our jump through time as well as current chronitron particle levels. Also I want permission to make sure they get a guided tour from our security teams," Lt. Haynes said. Eva shook her head. "Negative, Admiral's orders," She said, her tone conveying that she didn't like any more than he did. "They get unrestricted access to our systems." Haynes shook his head, "Strictly informal. But with SFI coming aboard I don't want those jerks having free run of the ship, there's no telling what nasty surprises they might leave behind either to spy on us or for interdiction. From the stories I've heard of them and their exploits I don't trust them one damned bit." "Once they are gone we will have our own people go over every system again with a fine tooth comb to make sure they don't leave any nasty surprises behind," Eva replied. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stardate: 2413.09.24 (USS Hades, Ready Room, CO Captain Eva Straton, 09:15) Eva was reading over departmental reports, just part of thebureaucratic duties she had to perform as Captain. She'd been keeping a close eye on the departmental efficiency reports for the last several months. There had been a disturbing trend and she could ignore it no longer. "Lt. Haynes and Lt. Trinin report to my Ready Room immediately," Eva said tapping her comm-badge. (Reply Haynes, Trinin) She closed the connection and waited for the two officers to arrive, still studying the reports on her screen. When both officers had arrived she got straight to the point. "Lt. Trinin," She said, "I have been reviewing departmental efficiency reports for the past several months. The efficiency rating of the Security Department has been suffering for the past several months. As the department head you are directly responsible for your the efficiency rating of your department. Your departments current efficiency rating is unacceptable. I will have an explanation." ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Hades, CSEC's Office, CSEC, Lieutenant Baylon Trinin, 0916) Baylon sat at his desk, leaned forward slightly with his head resting in his hands. He was exhausted, worn to the very nub of his soul. The departmental reports lay stacked up on the corner of his desk, waiting to be read, checked, verified and otherwise dealt with. His head throbbed from the constant lack of rest and the surrealistic sensation of a half daze that he'd been in for the last several months. His chin was rough with a growth of rough beard that had gone untended for the last couple of days. His eyes felt as if they might explode from his head from the constant pressure and strain. The very thought of handling more paperwork just nauseated him to no ends, not just mentally, but physically as well. He raised his head and shifted his body so that he was sitting a bit more upright. His right hand snaked down into the drawer in his desk. His fingers found the edge of the drawer, pulled it open and fumbled around inside for a moment. His fingers knew the feel of the cold glass bottle that held the Andorian whiskey much better than he'd liked, but that thought was well too far away for him to really care. The bottle was placed on the top of his desk with an unceremonious thud and he reached back into the drawer to find his glass. After a couple of moments he abandoned that effort and reached up instead to twist the cap from the half-full bottle. He had just dropped the cap on the table top and raised the bottle towards his lips when his commbadge chirped. He considered for a moment ignoring the summons and quaffing a sizable mouthful of the light blue liquid in the bottle. =^=Lt. Haynes and Lt. Trinin report to my Ready Room immediately=^= Captain Straton's voice sounded. Baylon set the bottle down after a moment's hesitation and then reached up and tapped his commbadge. He had narrowly escaped the temptation to down some of the Andorian Whiskey. "On my way Captain." he replied. He rose to his feet. Took a long look at the bottle, then forced himself to turn away from it and leave the office. The open bottle still sitting on his desktop. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Hades, Ready Room, FO/CSO Jericho Haynes, 09:17) As there was no pressing emergencies on the bridge Jack was occupying the main science console and finalizing the voluminous reports for the chronitron particle contamination that had been purged from the systems several days before. Star charts were up to date and not being added to currently as they were still well within mapped space. Science was then well up to date but there were a couple of departments whose daily reports were due. The captain wouldn't like that. He tapped the com button. "Doctor Trommashere and Lt. Wright I need your dailies in asap so they can be forwarded to the captain.." OPS and tactical were current as was security but that didn't tell the whole story. The dailies for security had been terminally late recently and were looking eerily similar from day to day. Jack couldn't put his finger on it ... officially but they were uncharacteristically brief and lacking in detail as well. (Reply: Sickbay, Engineering) Lt. Trinin had been late a lot to his bridge duty and leaving early the last couple of days and sporting a disheveled appearance, he had been looking either sick or something else which it was unpleasant to consider. It didn't sit well with Jack but he decided then and there he was going to have to confront the security chief and have a man-to-man with him, something was wrong and he was going to find out what it was. That is until the com activated. It was going to necessitate sterner measures more quickly than he had planned. =^=Lt. Haynes and Lt. Trinin report to my Ready Room immediately.=^= The program was still downloading, it would have to wait and the captain didn't sound happy. He motioned Fredericks over and tapped his combadge. "Acknowledged captain, on my way." He stood to his feet and moved to the ready room door then waited until Baylon stepped from the turbolift and joined him then nodded at him to precede him into the chamber beyond. Before he followed him though he turned to Lo'ren. "Ms. T'vof you have the bridge until I return." --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Hades, Bridge - CTAC Ensign Lo'ren T'Vof - 09:18) Lo'ren waited at TAC station I until Jack and Baylon had entered the Dragon's Den before she moved down to the command deck. Some of the crew seemed to be fond of that nickname for the ready room, and Lo'ren wasn't adverse to using it where appropriate - and an angry Captain Straton certainly made it appropriate. ~Menken claims he can see smoke coming out of her mouth.~ Lo'ren mused about the strict personality of Captain Straton, which had mellowed some since Sasha had come aboard. Their status was green and the crew much more relaxed now that they could contact family. Some were getting good news, others not such great missives.Others, like Lo'ren hadn't heared from family yet. Lo'ren was wondering why, her father was usually prompt. Rather than dwell on it, Lo'ren sat in the centre seat and tapped into the general status display. She checked in with the various stations and noted what they were up to. In between her own thoughts, Jack's emotions were clear - concern and worry masked their link, and Lo'ren had a decent idea why but she moved on to other matters, preferring to let Jack and Eva deal with it. She turned her attention to something she did have some control - even surreptitious control - over. She disliked the SFI teams that were still swaarming about the ship, but being unable to do a blessed thing about them she'd instead made sure that her tactical staff kept an eye on things - even if they weren't officially escorting SFI, Lo'ren got updates every so often on what they were looking at. She called up one of these and started reading. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Hades, Main Engineering, aCEO - Lieutenant Darla Wright, 0919) "...And adjust the last of the ion compensators to the new settings while you're there will ya Garrett?" "Sure thing chief, I'll get right on it." Darla smiled and turned to head back to her desk. The entire day, actually the entire week had been spent dealing with small issues that were semi-critical caused by the flood of chronitons in the ship's systems. It was amazing how much of an issue the ship's chronometer could cause with ship's systems in a situation like this. She had made it almost to her office door when her commbadge chirped for attention. =^=Doctor Trommashere and Lt. Wright I need your dailies in ASAP so they can be forwarded to the captain..=^= Darla sighed and then tapped her commbadge. She was about half done with the report. "Understood sir. I'll have them to you inside a half an hour provided we don't have another semi-critical service issue pop up. This damned chronometer issue has been running my folks in circles. All the scheduled maintenance tables are off and we're getting warnings every few minutes that we need to check this component or that because it's exceeded it's service life. Problem is, that some of the components were getting due before the jumps so they really have been exceeded now, and I have no way to know which ones do need to be shifted and which ones don't without inspections." "Sorry to vent sir, just wanted you to know why they're running late." --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Hades, Ready Room, CSEC, Lieutenant Baylon Trinin, 0920) Baylon realized that he was badly in need of a shave, but he didn't really care too much about it at the time. He knew well enough why it was that the Captain was summoning him. He could feel it in his bones. "Captain." He said simply, without enthusiasm when he stepped into the office. He had forced himself to put up his mental shields. He didn't need the captain picking up any sort of emotional distress that he might be feeling. "Lt. Trinin," She said, "I have been reviewing departmental efficiency reports for the past several months. The efficiency rating of the Security Department has been suffering for the past several months. As the department head you are directly responsible for your the efficiency rating of your department. Your department's current efficiency rating is unacceptable. I will have an explanation." "Yes, Ma'am." He said simply, "The answer is straight forward, sir. I have not been properly discharging my duties as the head of the security department. I have allowed paperwork and training schedules to slide. I have failed to discipline the personnel under my command adequately and I have been negligent. There is no member of the security staff to blame. I hold the responsibility for everything that happens in that department. I have since I made the department head ma'am." There was no need to sugar coat anything. Baylon knew that he was telling the truth. He did hold the ultimate responsibility for everything that had happened in the security department. He had made the decisions that had cost people their lives. He had failed to protect them, to protect the captain. He had failed them and had survived to show everyone else what an absolute failure he was. "There is no explanation that I can offer that excuses my inability to run that department Captain." ~Was this it? Was Straton finally going to get rid of him?~ He wondered. Of course he knew that she'd be better off without him; after all, he had lost the last captain and that only meant it would be a matter of time before he failed her also. ~It's better this way.~ He told himself. ~It's better so that no one else gets hurt.~ --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Hades, Ready Room, FO/CSO Jericho Haynes, 09:21) Jack took up station to Baylon's right as Captain Straton got straight to the point. "Lt. Trinin I have been reviewing departmental efficiency reports for the past several months. The efficiency rating of the Security Department has been suffering for the past several months. As the department head you are directly responsible for your the efficiency rating of your department. Your departments current efficiency rating is unacceptable. I will have an explanation." "Yes, Ma'am. The answer is straight forward, sir. I have not been properly discharging my duties as the head of the security department. I have allowed paperwork and training schedules to slide. I have failed to discipline the personnel under my command adequately and I have been negligent. There is no member of the security staff to blame. I hold the responsibility for everything that happens in that department. I have since I made the department head ma'am." He slumped noticably. "There is no explanation that I can offer that excuses my inability to run that department Captain." (Reply: Straton) Jack watched him closely as he spoke, he appeared a bit preoccupied and ... dazed? Or was it confused? His speech was halting rather than flowing freely and his eyes were bloodshot as though he had gotten little sleep over the last several nights, he was also looking a bit gaunt. In short the man appeared a wreck. This was not the Baylon Trinin he was used to working with and it worried him. After Straton he spoke. "Lieutenant how much sleep have you had in the last week?" (Reply: Baylon) Jack shook his head. "You don't look like you have been eating well either. Have you been to see the doctor or Counselor?" -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Hades, Ready Room, CSEC, Lieutenant Baylon Trinin, 0922) Baylon could feel Haynes' eyes on him. You didn't need to be telepathic to know what he was thinking. Haynes spoke. "Lieutenant how much sleep have you had in the last week?" "Sleep, sir?" Baylon asked even as his brain was trying to figure out exactly what the answer was to that question. The only times he managed to sleep was when he had drunk himself into a stupor and passed out. It was the only way that the pain in his back would stop and his mind would allow him a moment or two of peace. Long enough to close his eyes. He frowned, "Maybe sixteen hours or so sir. I'm not really certain." Baylon answered honestly."I've been having difficulties sleeping lately." Jack shook his head. "You don't look like you have been eating well either. Have you been to see the doctor or Counselor?" "No sir." He replied again. He knew that he couldn't really bring himself to face Angeni. In fact since the incident he'd gone out of his way to avoid sickbay at all costs. He knew that she and Sash had been close and that he had robbed her of a very good friend. "I've not." "Counselor Ripley has been busy with the crew." ~Which is technically true.~"And I don't see any need to bother Medical with a little insomnia, sir." --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Hades, Ready Room, CO Captain Eva Straton, 0923) Trinin slumped noticeably. "There is no explanation that I can offer that excuses my inability to run that department Captain." Eva stared at Trinin studying him as Haynes spoke. "Lieutenant how much sleep have you had in the last week?" Eva listened to the exchange between Trinin and Haynes while still studying Trinin's appearance. She could tell that Trinin was trying to shield his true emotional state from her, but his mind was distracted, it was written all over his appearance. She was still picking up a strong sense of guilt that was leaking through his shields. She had a pretty good idea what was going on here, she'd seen it before in marines under her command. Lt. Trinin needed professional help and she would make sure he got it. "And I don't see any need to bother Medical with a little insomnia, sir," Lt. Trinin finished. "Lt. Trinin," Eva said, speaking for the first time, "You will report to sickbay immediately after leaving here and you will submit to a full medical and psychological review. Furthermore until as such time as you have been cleared by both the Chief Medical Officer and Counselor you are relieved of your duties as Chief of Security. Lt. Haynes will escort you to Sickbay and ensure that you cooperate fully with both the CMO and Counselor. You're dismissed." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Hades, Sickbay, ACMO Ensign Haywood Parker, 0924) Still not having bothered to shave his sandpaper cheeks, Haywood lay sprawled out on a biobed at the far end of the bay. Finally having finished his reports, and having just sent the dailies to the FO, he was ready for a big fat break and as scruffy as he looked, now was the time for that break. Holding his PADD awkwardly over his face, Haywood scrolled through messages from home. According to a letter from his mother, the crew of the "Sea Lass" had managed to tag four bonnet head sharks in the last week, Haywood's dad had broken his wrist again, and Uncle Ferg had managed to get himself arrested for something unmentionable. Haywood had learned, in all the years surviving his family, never to ask about the things Uncle Ferg did. He sighed and dropped his PADD thoughtlessly onto the floor, where it bounced once from the impact before settling with a rattle. The initial empty feeling after losing Captain Sash had begun to pass, but there was still something lacking. Haywood could see it in many of the crewmen, but at least people had the chance to relax now, and get on with life. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Hades, Ready Room, SO, Lieutenant Baylon Trinin, 0925) Lt. You're dismissed." For a moment, Baylon wanted to scream at the woman, to shout at her and call her all sorts of names. A deep resentment and anger started to build in his gut, but it quickly subsided as he realized that she was only doing the right thing. If he couldn't be trusted to do the job right, then he deserved to be released from the position. If he were in her shoes, he would have probably done the same thing. He took a deep breath, and released it as a slow defeated sigh. "Captain, I..." He began, considering resigning his commission completely, then thought better of it, "...Aye, Aye Sir." he finally managed then spun on his heels and headed out of the Dragon's den. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Hades - Ready Room - FO/CSO Jericho Haynes - 0926) When the captain began speaking it was Jack's turn to put the eagle eye on Lt. Trinin again, the more he saw of his condition the more worried he became. Lt. Trinin, you will report to sickbay immediately after leaving here and you will submit to a full medical and psychological review. Furthermore until such time as you have been cleared by both the Chief Medical Officer and Counselor you are relieved of your duties as Chief of Security. Lt. Haynes will escort you to Sickbay and ensure that you cooperate fully with both the CMO and Counselor. You're dismissed." Baylon's face went from pale and haggard to bright red and he looked like he was about to blow a gasket, with an effort though that was evident in his voice he controlled himself. "Captain, I...Aye, Aye Sir." Whatever he had been meaning to say was bitten off as he capitulated, Jack fell into step behind him as he spun and headed for the door. ~Holy cow! This is not the officer I have worked with, whatever is eating at him is bad, it's unfortunate that it came to this but I've been there.~ He had been taken off of active duty after Shilae's death and with the state he had been in it had not been easy for him to accept, just as Baylon was struggling with it now. Knowing that due to the state of mind the security officer was in wouldn't be condusive to conversation he had been silent except for ordering the turbolift to deck ten. Later on when Baylon had calmed down he would talk to him, right now words wouldn't be welcomed nor could they convey effectively how he sympathized. Besides he had a job to do which sometimes was unpleasant and sympathy wasn't part of the equation, he would make sure the Captain's orders were followed to the letter, even if that meant he had to be what he hated, a hardass in the process. That was the most important thing, making sure he got the help he needed whether he wanted it or not so he kept a poker face on the way down. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Hades, Bridge - CTAC Ensign Lo'ren T'Vof - 0927) Lo'ren turned her head at the sound of the Ready Room door swishing open. Her awareness of Jack's concern was palpable and she could tell something was afoot. Baylon looked horrible and she worried for him. ~Lieutenant, what has made you so?~ She knew the Security department was struggling to hold together - they worked too closely with Tactical for much to be missed by her teams. And then there was Baylon's 'accident' on jump day, in his quarters - several bulkheads away from any possible source of injury and he ends up with a concussion. All these thoughts ran through her mind as she watched Jack's grim face as he trailed Baylon into the turbolift. Her sensitive ears caught the deck number and Lo'ren felt she could safely assume their destination as Sickbay. Lo'ren took it on herself to check for the Security dailies - incomplete, as they had been on several occasions, and severely truncated. She called upon a reliable officer in security. "Ensign T'Vof to Ensign T'Sol, please respond." (reply T'Sol) "I would like to request that you do the dailies for Security today. Lt.Trinin is... otherwise occupied." (reply T'Sol) "Thank you, T'Vof out." Lo'ren settled back into the command chair and stared at the main veiwer, lost in contemplation and concern for her crewmate and friend. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Hades, Phaser range - SO Ensign T'Sol - 0929) Another controlled gentle squeeze and the target disintegrated as the phaser bolt struck it. She turned left twenty degrees, lined up the barrel of the rifle with the rapidly moving target and matched it's movement and speed. It too disintegrated a moment later. The small chime sounded letting T'Sol know that she had completed the course. "That's amazing T'Sol" Ensign Shrall exclaimed as the rest of the security squad looked on. Already a series of quick credit transfers were underway. "There is nothing amazing about it ensign." T'Sol replied, "It is simply a fact that if you practiced more that you would have a better chance of beating my score on the range." There were a few chuckles and cat calls from the assembled team as they caught the intention of the remark. "Come on T'Sol. There's no way I could have known that you could score a one-hundred percent hit ration on the hardest setting the system has. I thought I had you when I completed the last level and scored seventy-five percent on this one." The Vulcan raised one eyebrow. "Then perhaps you thought incorrectly. You should have realized that I accumulate more hours on the range than any officer in the entire security department. Additionally, perhaps you should have included the fact that you have not been training regularly into your equations as well." "There's no need to be nasty about it" Shrall said, his blue antennae twitching. "It is not my intention to be 'nasty' I was merely pointing out..." The sounds of her commbadge chirping for attention interrupted her. =^=Ensign T'Vof to Ensign T'Sol, please respond.=^= She handed the rifle to the Andorian, "Excuse me," she said. "It seems Ihave business to attend to. Perhaps you should use this time to continue with your training. The Andorian snarled, but T'Sol was already moving away from the firing line and tapping her commbadge as she went. "T'Sol here." =^=I would like to request that you do the dailies for Security today. Lt.Trinin is... otherwise occupied.=^= For the second time in only a few moments, T'Sol's eyebrow raised of it's own accord. "Of course, Ensign T'Vof. I will begin them immediately." =^=Thank you, T'Vof out.=^= T'Sol allowed her eyebrow to rest and then with a purposeful step headed for the Security Offices. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Hades, Ready Room, CO Captain Eva Straton, 0930) Eva waited until Trinin and Haynes had left giving them enough time to walk across the Bridge and enter the turbolift before tapping her com-badge. "Ensign T'Vof report to my Ready Room immediately," She said. (Reply T'Vof) It was only a matter of seconds till the door chime sounded. "Enter," Eva said. She watched as Ensign T'Vof entered the room and marched up to her desk. "I have relieved Lt. Trinin of his duties as Chief of Security,"Eva said, getting straight to the point. "You will assume that position as well as your current position as Chief of Tactical effective immediately. I expect you to bring the Security department up to spec in short order. Do you have any questions or concerns in regards to your effectively running the Security department?" ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ (USS Hades, Bridge - CTAC Ensign Lo'ren T'Vof - 0930.5) =/\=Ensign T'Vof report to my Ready Room immediately.=/\= A summons by the Captain was to be obeyed immediately, and considering her proximity to the Ready Room, Lo'ren wasted no time moving. "Mister Adams, you have the CONN." She made a few short strides that brought her to the door and tapped the entry chime. =/\=Enter=/\= Straton's voice activated the automated door and it swished aside for Lo'ren immediately. The red-head looked all business, and so Lo'ren kept her own stance formal and came to attention in front of the desk. ~When does she not look all business, I wonder?~ --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Hades, Bridge - CTAC Ensign Lo'ren T'Vof - 0931) Lo'ren hadn't been able to get a word in before Straton launched into the reason Lo'ren was there. "I have relieved Lt. Trinin of his duties as Chief of Security, You will assume that position as well as your current position as Chief of Tactical effective immediately. I expect you to bring the Security department up to spec in short order. Do you have any questions or concerns in regards to your effectively running the Security department?" Lo'ren's eyes widened a micrometer before she got them under control. ~No wonder Jack's so cold and concerned right now. Baylon's in worse shape than I thought.~ "Is this a temporary position, Captain?" Lo'ren wanted to know - not because she had any ambition for advancement, but because it would affect morale. (reply Straton) Lo'ren shook her head, "A switch like this will affect morale, ma'am - as I'm sure you are aware. I don't want to mislead anyone with the wrong information." Lo'ren paused for a breath before continuing. "Ma'am, the only thing I am concerned about for my performance is working with the Marine contingent." Lo'ren was unabashed at being unfamiliar with the newest 'department' on the ship. "What, if any, relation do they have with the Security department? I've not been priviledged to work with them directly before." (Reply Straton) Lo'ren watched the former Marine, wanting to pick up any clues she could. She was trained as a Tactical Officer, Marines and Security weren't exactly her forte - Security was a bit more though. When Straton finished Lo'ren shook her head, "Nothing further Captain. I asked Ensign T'Sol to complete the Security Dailies for today - I wasn't certain what was happening but I thought it would be a prudent course. I will inform the Security staff of the change." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Hades, Sickbay, SO, Lieutenant Baylon Trinin, 0932) Thankfully, the trip down in the turbolift with Lieutenant Haynes had remained thankfully silent. The Science officer turned first Officer wasn't a bad man, and Baylon avoided any conversation, knowing that in his present state of mind that he'd likely say something to the man that he didn't deserve. The doors to the main sickbay slid open in their usual hushed manner, and Baylon stepped through, turning his head to either side to take in the fullness of the compartment. The room was mostly empty, a few patients undergoing standard treatments or checkups were being tended by either staff doctors or nurses. It was apparent however that there were not nearly enough patients to keep the medical staff fully occupied. Baylon cleared his throat loudly, which garnered the attention of a few of the less preoccupied members of the ship's medical staff. He stood and waited for the senior tech or doctor on staff to ask what they needed, so that Lieutenant Haynes could convey the captain's orders. ~So which of you lucky SOB's get to deal with me? So long as it's not Angeni, I'll be okay.~ --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Hades, Bridge - Lieutenant David Adams - 0932.5) David had been studying the efficiency of the EPS conduits when Lt. Trinin and the First Officer had left the Ready Room so he hadn't seen what had been transpiring. The helmsman had nudged him with an elbow though and let him know about it. "Did you see that?" "See what?" He had replied quietly. "Lt. Trinin and the FO just left the Captain's Ready Room and Trinin looked like something the cat dragged in, I'd say Lt. Haynes wasn't happy about it either from the look on his face. He marched him right into the turbolift and got in with him." David just shrugged in reply, it wasn't any of his business. If the Captain had seen the man in that condition though he felt sorry for the security chief, come to think of it the FO might have got a little bit of a** chewing as well for letting the officer walk about that way. At any rate it wasn't anything for him to be worried about, the Betazoid would bounce back from it, he was a resilient fellow. Several minutes later though he heard the acting bridge officer's combadge beep, he couldn't really hear what was going on and wouldn't have pried, immediately afterward though she addressed him. "Mister Adams, you have the CONN." He looked back in a bit of surprise but nodded as he got to his feet. "Yes sir." She was already almost to the Ready Room and didn't reply so he walked back to the command chair and sat down, his eyes swiveling as he checked the stations on the bridge. He tapped his combadge. "Mr. Skelf you are required on the bridge." =^= On my way sir,=^= Everything was quiet right now so he settled back as he waited for his relief to arrive. The main viewer showed the starfield passing by, they were currently en-route to Starbase Geneva for updates and training and he couldn't help but wonder what starfleet might have come up with in the years they had been gone. Efforts to contact his former girlfriend had met with nil results and he had resigned himself to the fact she had moved on in her life which was slightly depressing but then again they hadn't been going together for very long and he was never around. No doubt she had found someone better suited to be a steady beau. He shook his head as he frowned at the thought, at twenty eight years of age he was uncommitted and would be so for the near future but such was life in starfleet. He was more worried about other things at the moment, like what new toys command might give them to play with and adding to his martial skills. ~Everything comes to those who wait.~ The Betalgeusean stepped from the turbolift and made his way to the OPS console, nodding at David as he walked by. The human gave him a reply nod and went back to his thoughts as he waited for someone to return and relieve him in turn so he could get back to his duties. Being the watch officer could be interesting if you let it or were unfamiliar with it but he had done so in the past under Captain Saleke, it had been a while but it was nothing too exciting. It was satisfying though. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Hades, Sickbay, ACMO Ensign Haywood Parker, 0933) The sliding of the doors caught Haywood's eye and he immediately dragged himself off the biobed he had commandeered and fumbled to pick of the PADD he had dropped to the floor. When, at last, he looked up again, Lieutenants Haynes and Trinin stood just in the entrance of sickbay. He cleared his throat, brushed non-existent dust from his chest and jogged toward where they stood. As he pulled closer to the two of them, Haywood noticed the bedraggled appearance of the chief of security. Actually, he was surprised he didn't see it from across the bay. First, he raised an eyebrow in the direction of the new FO, but he had a little more tact when it came to actually speaking... most of the time. "How can I help you, sirs?" He asked, as though it wasn't obvious. He didn't actually need a reply to start ushering Baylon toward the closest biobed. (reply Baylon, Jack) Haywood nodded, and looked in the direction of his office, "Would you do me a favor, sir," he said to Jack over his shoulder, "would you get my tricorder from my desk for me? I really need to glue that thing to my hip, or I'm gonna lose it one of these days!" (reply Jack) "When was the last time you slept, Baylon?" Haywood asked, once the FO had moved away, "and I don't need any general answers, give me a number. And drinking your Andorian stuff until you fall over doesn't count." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Hades, Sickbay, SO, Lieutenant Baylon Trinin, 0935) "How can I help you, sirs?" He asked, as though it wasn't obvious. He didn't actually need a reply to start ushering Baylon toward the closest biobed. "Mr. Trinin is to have a full medical screen immediately Mr. Parker."Lieutenant Haynes replied, apparently not trusting Baylon to adhere to the order that the captain had issued him. ~Why should he~ The Betazoid thought to himself, ~It's not like you've shown a great deal of good judgment lately, Baylon.~ Haywood motioned for Baylon to head towards one of the Biobeds. It was an innocuous gesture, well practiced and rehearsed to not give the patient any inkling of difficulty. Baylon simply nodded, a shallow nod and complied. Haywood nodded, and then looked in the direction of his office, "Would you do me a favor, sir," he said to Jack over his shoulder, "would you get my tricorder from my desk for me? I really need to glue that thing to my hip,or I'm going to lose it one of these days!" I'll be right back." The First Officer replied, then headed across the bay. Baylon took a seat on the end of the bed. "When was the last time you slept, Baylon?" Haywood asked, once the FO had moved away, "and I don't need any general answers, give me a number. And drinking your Andorian stuff until you fall over doesn't count." The Betazoid gave Parker an acidic look for a moment, then his demeanor softened and he slumped forward where he sat. He was exhausted. Trinin thought about it for a moment, "I don't know," he said with a shrug "maybe three or four." (reply Haywood) "Weeks." Baylon supplied with a shrug of his shoulders, "if we're not counting the blackouts. About four days if we are." He paused and took a deep breath. "I'm having terrible pains, in my back and left arm. Where the Waagoshin sliced me up on the station. It's worse when I try to sleep, so I've been having a little something before bed to try to take the edge off. I was working for a while, but not so much now. And the pain is pretty constant these days." Baylon glanced over to see Angeni and Haynes talking. "I've been avoiding sickbay... because... Because of Angeni." He added, "So the sooner I can leave here the better, eh?" (reply Haywood) "Oh Damn!" Baylon cursed under his breath as he spotted Haynes heading his way, Angeni in tow. (reply Haywood iyw) They looked as if they'd reach the biobed in a record amount of time, or at least that's how it seemed to Baylon, who could feel the muscles in his chest start to tighten with the dread of facing the Cherokee doctor face-to-face. Baylon's face went pale and his palms suddenly started sweating. His breathing sped up just a bit and he could already feel the adrenalin pumping into his blood stream readying him to flee from the bay as soon as he could. He tore his eyes away from the CMO and looked Haywood in the eyes, "You've got to get me out of here, Haywood. Seriously, I can't stay here." (reply Haywood) Then they were there, Haynes with the tricorder, his face impassive; and Angeni, the Cherokee medicine woman and friend to the now deceased Captain Devan Sash. He turned his face away from her. He couldn't bring himself to look her in the eyes. Jack turned over the Tricorder and then stepped away from the biobed. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Hades, Sickbay, CMO Angeni O. Windsong-Trommashere, 0935.5) Sitting in her office, she was going over the medic kits. Some of the triage transponders had been damaged in the last fire fight, and she was busy replacing things. She glanced up, smiling at Haywood who was crashed out on a biobed. He deserved the rest. She heard the doors open and she watched Baylon and Jack enter. Baylon looked like he hadn't seen a razor, or sleep, or food in days. Jack had a look on his face that could cut glass. She started to get up, but she hesitated. She watched as Haywood moved in and sent Jack off in another direction. He was coming straight for Haywoods' office, and as he entered, she called over to him. "Lieutennant Haynes. To what do I owe this pleasure?" (Reply Jack) Angenis' brow furrowed. She handed Jack a tricorder, then she turned to him. "Level with me. Friend to Friend, not co-worker to co-worker. What's going on with him?" She tilted her head towards Baylon. "I haven't seen someone look that haggard since I was working on Earth as a Medic. Then again, I hate to say it, but over the past few months, I've seen a lot of people who could take second place in the looking like a pile of Klingon crap contest. Is it because of...?" She left the ending hang in the air. It had been months since Devon Sashs' death, yet many crewmen were still taking it roughly. She had to suspend a medic a month or two ago because he had gotten himself hooked on painkillers. After his injury, while dealing with Devons' death, the medic had been taking pain killers. Now that his injury was gone, he had been taking them to help numb the psychological pain. She found him in the store room of sickbay, hypo vials scattered all about, the medic barely breathing. She herself was not without fault. A laser scalpel and dermal regenerator were hidden amongst her most private things in her room. Self destruction was her game, but she couldn't bring herself to seek the help of the counselor. ~One day, I'll stop this crap...~ (Reply Jack) "Maybe I should talk to him, what do you think, Jack?" She looked out the window and smiled at Haywood and Baylon, offering up a polite wave and head nod as she turned back to Jack. She offered him a sweet smile. "How have you been doing?" -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Hades - Sickbay - FO/CSO Jericho Haynes - 0936) He stepped aside so that Baylon could enter the door first, although he had a defiant look he was being cooperative. Sickbay wasn't exactly busy at the moment and it didn't take long for ACMO Parker to see them enter and hurry over in a half walk, half run. Haywood gave Jack a quizzical look as he neared after getting a good gander at the other officer then addressed them both. "How can I help you, sirs?" Jack was all business. "Mr. Trinin is to have a full medical screen immediately Mr. Parker." Haywood nodded and instantly set about getting the Lieutenant moving toward a nearby biobed. Jack followed on their heels, he was going to stay right by his elbow through his visit to the sickbay and until he had ushered him into the Counselor's office, speaking of which he would have to give her a call ASAP so that she could clear her schedule enough to see the Betazoid immediately following this checkup. There was really no way of knowing how long they were going to be here but he needed to give her enough warning so that she could build a little flexibility into the next couple of hours ... or as long as it took. As they neared the bed Haywood turned his head to address Jack. "Would you do me a favor, sir? Would you get my tricorder from my desk for me? I really need to glue that thing to my hip, or I'm gonna lose it one of these days!" Jack looked from Haywood to Baylon and gave it an instant of thought before nodding his head. "I'll be right back." He wasn't going to take his eyes off the officer for any longer than necessary, he was Jack's responsibility and he wasn't about to let him duck out. He was taking long strides through the door to the medical offices when he saw Angeni sitting at her desk, she spoke to him before he could make his destination. "Lieutenant Haynes. To what do I owe this pleasure?" "Ensign Parker seems to have forgotten his tricorder so I'm fetching it for him." His reply was a bit more curt than he would have liked, he turned his head to look through the glass to where Haywood was speaking to Trinin who had taken a seat on the bed. Angeni grabbed one off her desk then stood and held it out to him so he walked to her and accepted it with a nod. "Thanks." She had picked up on the tone of the visit well enough, she gave him a worried look. "Level with me. Friend to Friend, not co-worker to co-worker. What's going on with him?" She then motioned with her head to the bay toward Baylon and Haywood. Haywood didn't need to know, not yet but Angeni was the Chief Medical Officer and was on the need to know list. She was one who would have to be satisfied before he could resume his duties. Jack kept one eye glued to what was happening outside as he answered her. "Captain Straton has removed Lieutenant Trinin from duty pending a full medical and psychological exam, not that I don't trust Haywood but I want you to go over the results personally after he is finished. As for what's going on with him..." He shrugged helplessly. "I'm not qualified to say." It wasn't his duty to hypothesize on what might be wrong with the officer, that was the Counselor's job though he had some suspicions, but that's all they were ... suspicions and he couldn't very well voice them. "I haven't seen someone look that haggard since I was working on Earth as a Medic." She said thoughtfully. "Then again, I hate to say it, but over the past few months, I've seen a lot of people who could take second place in the looking like a pile of Klingon crap contest. Is it because of...?" He shook his head with a frown. "I honestly don't know, to speculate on it would be counterproductive at this point. Counselor Ripley will be far better equipped to make that diagnosis." "Maybe I should talk to him, what do you think, Jack?" She turned and gave the two a smile and a wave then turned back to him. "I think it probably wouldn't hurt though I don't know if he's in the mood for conversation right now." He replied truthfully. Her next question caught him by surprise. "How have you been doing?" He was baffled by the change of direction, any other time he would have been happy to make small talk. ~Maybe I'm just in a little too anxious? No, this is too important.~ "I've been doing great." His face lost its tightness as he gave her a quick smile. "Better than great actually." Lo'ren had made a profound change in his mental outlook, it had been a long time since he could honestly say something like that. Not that he was doing perfectly though, he could still feel the raw edges of that old emptiness at times. Maybe it would always be there, at least though much of it had abated. "I'd love to chat," He added. "But Haywood needed this." He hefted the tricorder and gave a nod in that direction. "Let's meet in ten forward some time and we'll chat it up, right now though we need to get these exams on Baylon done as soon as possible so I can get him to the counselor. It would be best if you sat in on this as well, if you'd like to talk with Lt. Trinin now would be a good time." (Reply: Angeni) He nodded once and preceded her out the door, taking lengthy though unhurried strides to the biobed where Baylon was being examined. His face had settled back into an emotionless mask. Having reached it he handed it over to Haywood without delay and stepped to one side so the doctors could focus their efforts on the patient. (Reply: Haywood, Angeni, Baylon) Since things seemed now to be proceeding smoothly he stepped back and tapped his combadge. "Counselor Ripley." (Reply: Ana) He lowered his voice so that he wouldn't be overheard by anyone here."This is Lieutenant Haynes, I am currently in sickbay with Lieutenant Trinin, I will be bringing him to your office immediately after his exam is finished.here. He has been removed from duty by the captain pending full physical and psychological testing. I need you to free up some time to see him." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Hades, Sickbay, CMO Angeni O. Windsong-Trommashere, 0937) As Angeni approached, she looked at Baylon and her heart sunk into her stomach. Just her appearance stimulated the "flight" in his flight or fight response. His other outward appearance before she emerged from the office was one of a tortured soul. There was nothing medically she could do for him. She had seen that same look on cops' faces following the death of a superior. It was the same look she had seen painted on faces days following Sashs' death. Angeni stopped mid step, mid motion. She had inflicted physical pain countless times, resetting dislocated joints, setting fractures, and the like, but doling out mental and emotional pain wasn't her strong suit. She tore her eyes away from Baylon and over to Haywood. She forced a smile on her face as she called to him. "If my head wasn't screwed on, I'd forget it in the bathroom..." She shrugged, "I need to go back to my office, I need to get a report out to Commander...I mean Captain Stration." She turned to Baylon, then suddenly her resolve hit, and hit hard. She wasn't about to let this just go by the wayside. She grabbed the Tricorder out of Haywoods' hand, and she scanned Baylon with it. Her hand was shaking the whole time, but she finished the scan. Her lips were a thin, red line and she read the read out. ~God Dammit!~ Any telepath in a three hundred kilometer radius could probably hear and feel the explitives that were running through her mind. She kept her face neutral, but she was pissed off as all hell. She handed the tricorder back to Haywood and she grimaced slightly. "I have a report to write. If you will excuse me..." --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Hades-Counseling office- COUNS-Ensign Anamitra Ripley-0939) "Go on." Ana urged, her voice was calm and gentle, the intonation that of a friend rather than a doctor. She smiled lightly as she looked into Ensign Selenga's baby blue eyes. The woman was crying, small soft sobs of emotional pain welling up from her inner body. "I jus... I just always thought he'd be there." She said as her chest rose and fell in irregular patterns caused by the sobbing. "And....now he's gone.I never...." The sobbing increased and the woman's voice broke as the pain of the moment bore itself from her body. "You never told him you were sorry." Ana finished for her. Selenga nodded, her blonde hair, normally so perfectly perched on her head, spilled free with the violence of the motion. "I always meant... to tell him." Ana reached out and gently placed her left hand on the woman's knee. There were simple times like these that a single human touch could convey more than any words could. "It's okay." Ana said. "You have to understand that he wouldn't have wanted you to be so distraught over this. He loved you. He would never want you to tear yourself up over something so far beyond your control." "But... He's gone now." Sara sobbed, "I'll never see him again." Ana nodded. "That's true, but it's part of the natural cycle of life. Sooner or later we all move on from this existence into whatever awaits us beyond. Eric's time came. Nothing that you could have said or done could have changed any of that from happening. I'm certain of that." Sara nodded. "It's going to take time for you to heal. Time for you to come to a complete understanding that Eric has been gone for the last three years. It's going to be difficult because for us, it only seems like yesterday. It's going to take time and it's going to hurt for a little while. It's okay to cry. It's okay to get a little angry and to vent those emotions. But you have to accept it Sara. Nothing you think, or feel would have changed anything. Eric would still be gone." She nodded again, this time raising a cloth napkin to her face to wipe away some of the tears that had caused her eyes to puff up. "I know." She finally replied, "It's just so....." she fumbled for the words. "Difficult." Ana supplied. "yes difficult." Sara agreed with another bob of her head. She took a deep breath, pulled herself up into a sitting position and then said in a calm voice. "Can I use your bathroom? I'd like to freshen up before I go counselor." "Of course Sara, and you can call me Ana." Sara reached out and squeezed her hand. "Thank you Ana." she said softly. "You're welcome Sara." Without another word the young ensign rose and headed for the Bathroom. Ana watched her go. ~Another breakthrough.~ She thought with a smile. ~It's about time, I was beginning to get a bit concerned there.~ =^=Counselor Ripley=^= The sound was so sudden, so absolutely harsh that it startled Ana to the point that she nearly fell out of her chair. It didn't take her but a moment to realize that the sound had come from her commbadge and that the voice belonged to Lieutenant Jack Haynes. ~What have we here? Is Jack finally going to make an appointment?~ She wondered as she reached up and tapped her commbadge, casting a quick eye to the bathroom where Sara was still refreshing herself. "Ripley here." she replied simply. =^=This is Lieutenant Haynes, I am currently in sickbay with Lieutenant Trinin, I will be bringing him to your office immediately after his exam is finished here. He has been removed from duty by the captain pending full physical and psychological testing. I need you to free up some time to see him.=^= ~Lieutenant Trinin~ Ana thought in confusion, He seemed to be pretty stable during the first set of interviews that she had conducted after arriving aboard ship. What had happened to have him relieved of his duties? "I understand. I'll clear my schedule. I have a session I'll be concluding in the next ten minutes or so. After that, I'll be available." She frowned and then asked the question that she hated to ask. "Is the lieutenant showing any signs of violence or intense depression?" --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Hades - Sickbay - FO/CSO Jericho Haynes - 0940) =^= Is the lieutenant showing any signs of violence or intense depression? =^= "No to the first but I'd say yes to the second." Jack was watching Baylon who had been giving the impression of anxiety, terror and nearing panicked flight from the moment he and Angeni had neared his vicinity. All the more resaon for Jack to have stationed himself between the biobed on which the man currently resided and the sickbay doors where he stood with crossed arms. "He is unkempt, appears exhausted and has been unable to carry out the duties of running his department. I'd say he hasn't slept more than a wink or two for days and doesn't appear to have been eating regularly." This was another unsavory duty to Jack, informing on a fellow officer to the very department he so intensely despised but he kept reminding himself that it had to be done for Lieutenant Trinin's sake. "I'll be honest with you Counselor," he added. "I have been putting off talking with him for the last two days thinking he would snap out of it but it's getting worse, the presence of Doctor Trommashere has him in a panic." (Reply: Ana) "I won't let him out of my sight." Jack gave a sigh. "And I'm not going to defray the duty to anyone else. I don't think he would defy the Captain's orders but I can't take that chance considering the state he's in." (Reply: Ana) "I'll have him there as soon as medical releases him from the exam, thanks Counselor." Thanking the Counselor was the last thing he would ever have thought to do but it was genuine, he was worried about the man. Baylon and he weren't close but Jack considered him a friend nonetheless. He had always been supportive and friendly toward him and Jack did indeed intend to have a talk with him later with his First Officer's rank set aside, man to man. Since he had undergone a breakdown in the past he might be able to give him some needed support and insight. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Hades-Counseling office- COUNS-Ensign Anamitra Ripley-0942) =^=No to the first but I'd say yes to the second.=^= Jack replied. There wasa slight pause before he continued. =^=He is unkempt, appears exhausted and has been unable to carry out the duties of running his department. I'd say he hasn't slept more than a wink or two for days and doesn't appear to have been eating regularly.=^= =^=I'll be honest with you Counselor,=^= he added. =^=I have been putting off talking with him for the last two days thinking he would snap out of it but it's getting worse, the presence of Doctor Trommashere has him in a panic.=^= "That is something unusual." Ana replied as she considered the new information. "It seems that somehow she is causing him anxiety by being present. You should definitely keep a close eye on him. Don't leave him alone until I can assess the threat he may pose to himself." =^=I won't let him out of my sight.=^=Jack gave a sigh. =^=And I'm not going to defray the duty to anyone else. I don't think he would defy the Captain's orders but I can't take that chance considering the state he's in.=^= "I completely understand Jack. But don't crowd him and don't try to force him to talk just yet. He'll speak when he's ready. Try to get him to my office as soon as possible." =^=I'll have him there as soon as medical releases him from the exam, thanks Counselor.=^= The channel closed and Ana frowned as she considered everything she had heard. It was clear even from an untrained point of view that Lieutenant Trinin was suffering from serious bouts of clinical depression. She had a fair idea what the cause of that was, but she couldn't allow herself to work on any assumptions until she'd spoken with him and determined the cause beyond any measure of doubt. The door to the bathroom opened and Sara stepped out. Her hair once again in place and her eyes looked clear and shining. "Feel better?" Ana asked her. "Yes, much better thank you Ana." Ana smiled, "You're welcome Sara. I may have to revise my schedule, so I'll let you know if we need to adjust our session time." Ana said, "In the meantime, you've made a lot of progress and you're doing a great deal better. Just keep reminding yourself of the positive things we've discussed and I promise you things will get easier for you." Sara nodded. "I know Ana, it's just so hard sometimes." "I know it is Sara, believe me. Hard is something I understand very well." The ensign nodded and then plastered an almost convincing smile on to her face. With her head held high she turned and left the compartment. Leaving Ana to await the arrival of Baylon Trinin. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Hades-Sickbay- Ensign Hawkeye Dolphine -1045) Hawkeye had been in the office for about an hour when he heard the doors to sickbay open. He looked up and noted that both other duty nurses were busy with patients so Hawkeye adjusted his uniform tunic and walked into the main sickbay. The duty nurse was already preforming triage when Hawkeye walked over. The man in a yellow uniform was clutching his chest and looked like he had just finished a marathon race. Hawkeye approached the nurse and asked for a brief report on the patient. the medic, one John Winchester, walked over to observe and offer what assistance he could. He was curious as to what was wrong and what he could learn from the physicians on duty. Despite the timeflux, he still wanted to finish medical school and join the ranks of the physicians on board. "What seems to be the problem?" Hawkeye asked the crewman and the duty nurse. " I......can't.....breathe......chest.........feels.......tight....."the crewman managed to get out while gasping for air. The duty nurse gave Hawkeye a much more detailed report. "His pulse is around 220,he's diaphoretic, clammy and respirations are around 24. Lungs are clear and equal bilaterally, and his EKG is a rhythm I don't recognize.States that two days ago. he felt a large pain in his chest. He didn't think much of it and went to rest for about two days. He stated that the pain was intermittent but this morning he awoke unable to catch his breath. he tried to walk down the hall and made it to the sickbay doors before he presented like this." Hawkeye looked up at the EKG rhythm on the bio bed and his jaw hit the floor. This was something he had never seen. It was almost as if the man had two hearts with two separate rhythms. Hawkeye had the man sedated at once and placed him on a respirator. He instantly called for the other physicians to join him at the bio bed. "Angeni, Haywood, Chase from Hawkeye, if you arent too terribly busy could you drop everything and come down to sickbay please? I have something I want you to see. I have a patient here with what appears to be two separate hearts with two completely incompatible EKG rhythms. I'll fill you in more when you get here.Hawkeye out" --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stardate: 2413.09.25 (USS Hades - Deck 2, Personal Quarters - FO/CSO Jericho Haynes- 19:17) Jack was reading yet another of the standard protocols on a hand padd, this one about Denobulian sleeping habits and how to deal with them when they were entering or exiting sleep mode. Basically it read this way: Relieve subject of duty and send to quarters and do not disturb during the sleep cycle. Denobulians hybernated for days at a time and one awoken before that cycle ended was not only drowsy but often delusional, forgetful and generally could be a danger to themselves and others. Jack shook his head at that, this was something to remember! Lo'ren was currently in the 'study' and making use of the workstation to catch up on news from home. His own parents had already sent their joyous greetings and news that his younger sister had married again, this one appeared to be the real deal according to them. Her first husband had been a grade A louse and there had been celebrating among some members of the family... including him when she had kicked him out of the house and served him the papers. John, his older brother was doing well after a near fatal bout with typhoid which he had picked up in South America during cleanup operations after a hurricane strike. Bad water had been to blame due to drainage into the water supply from a contaminated reservoir. Flooding tends to do that, it still amazed him at times how such treatable diseases which had been thought to be stamped out still continued to manifest. Dad's health was worsening but hs mother had been assured he still had a decade of quality life left and were treating his Lou Gehrigs disease with some kind of a breakthrough drug. Initial results were promising, so good news and bad news but overall upbeat. The last part was on Denobulan mating habits, the fact that they often had multiple wives who themselves had multiple husbands set his head to spinning. ~How do they keep the kids seperated? By patriarchal parent or matriarchal? Do they do DNA screenings just to confirm who the true pair is? ~ He didn't get to that part, Lo'ren's sudden surge of shock caused him to drop the padd and get out of the bed fast, he padded on his socks to the study to find out what was wrong. "Lo'ren! Lo'ren! Are you all right?" He called as he left the bedroom. When he dropped a hand to her shoulder she almost jumped out of her skin. “Jack, you startled me.” Her face was wet with tears he noted. "What is wrong?" The floodgates to her eyes opened as she pointed at the screen, his arms were wrapped around her shoulders as he glanced at it. ~Oh damn!~ He held her as she sobbed brokenly and clung to him. "I'm sorry hon, I was looking forward to seeing your dad." “I wanted you... to meet... him... My... last letter to him... spoke of... you...” He sighed, her despair was nearly overwhelming but he stayed strong for her, holding on by sheer force of will. "There's nothing I can say that will bring him back. I just wish that I could..." he wrapped his arms about her tighter, not knowing what else to say. "I wished I could have seen him, I know he was a hell of a man." (Reply: Lo'ren) Her whole family was gone now, no not all. He kissed the crown of her head. "When do you want to go back home to see your parents graves? I'm sure you are going to want to visit them?" (Reply: Lo'ren) He nodded. "After that when you're ready I'd like to take you to Earth, there are some people there who are going to want to see you I'm sure. I'd like you to get to know my family, I'm sure they'll love you as much as I do." (Reply: Lo'ren) "Well I ..." He paused. "I was so wrapped up in other things like Shilae and the children I neglected to mention I've got a rather extensive family on Earth. Parents, brothers and a sister. You and I could take a leave together." He smiled. "I've told them I've got a girlfriend and I know they're chomping at the bit to meet you." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Hades - Deck 2, Personal Quarters - CTAC Ensign Lo'ren T'Vof- 19:18) His strength was the only thing that kept her from sprialling further into the dark void that beckoned her. She listened to his words and the depth of caring that made them echo in her mind. "There's nothing I can say that will bring him back. I just wish that I could..." he wrapped his arms about her tighter, and she held him close - just being together this way helped tremendously. "I wished I could have seen him, I know he was a hell of a man." Lo'ren thought of the strong arms that had held her as a small child, the times her father had comforted her after a particularly brutal day during the occupation. "He did something that most Vulcan's would never do, he let me be Bajoran. He was stronger than anyone really knew." Her breath caught between words as she worked mightily to control herself - drawing from Jack what she dared. "When Mother died, he stayed on Bajor - he could have gone back to Vulcan, but he wanted to be near her. Now they are together again." He was gentle as he kissed the crown of her head. "When do you want to go back home to see your parents graves? I'm sure you are going to want to visit them?" She wiped her tears with one hand and gently rested it against his chest, feeling his heartbeat. "As soon as possible, I haven't been back since before I graduated from the Academy. I want you to come too. I haven't any family there now, but I'd still like to show you around. Besides, I may need someone to help me carry my own memorial marker." He nodded. "After that when you're ready I'd like to take you to Earth, there are some people there who are going to want to see you I'm sure. I'd like you to get to know my family, I'm sure they'll love you as much as I do." Lo'ren leaned back in his arms, her face showing a quizzical look. "Your family?" The thought hadn't occured to her that Jack would have family alive- Shilae had been so present in his mind since Lo'ren had first joined with Jack that anything else had been buried, missed and forgotten. "Well I ..." He paused.. "I was so wrapped up in other things like Shilae and the children I neglected to mention I've got a rather extensive family on Earth. Parents, brothers and a sister. You and I could take a leave together." He smiled. "I've told them I've got a girlfriend and I know they're chomping at the bit to meet you." Lo'ren, her sorrow almost forgotten, grinned up at Jack, "I'd like that." She thought of what it must have been like to grow up with siblings. "I've never had any family other than my parents..." Lo'ren hesitated before adding, "and you." the last words coming out in a whisper. Her face flushed slightly along with the words. (reply Jack) She laughed a little then, sharing her thoughts with Jack made life so much better. ~Perhaps... no, not yet.~ Lo'ren toyed with the thought of taking their bond past the emotional level to the more permanent telepathic link, but she wasn't going to push that and with such a shock she wanted to make sure she was clear headed before addressing it to him. "The closest I come to having siblings is other camp survivors. I only exist because my father was a very smart doctor and figured out how to safely help my mother carry closer to the typical Vulcan 10 months. As a Vulcan I was born 2 months premature, as a Bajoran 3 months overdue." She smiled, thinking of the difficulty she was - even before she was born. "I guess I've always been trouble." (reply Jack) "Tell me about them?" Lo'ren asked, wanting simply to hear something good -for a change. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Hades - Deck 2, Personal Quarters - FO/CSO Jericho Haynes- 19:20) Her mood had lightened noticeably. "I'd like that. I've never had any family other than my parents..." There was a slight hesitation. "and you." The last words almost inaudible as her face colored. He couldn't have held her any closer had he tried though he would have loved to do so. The emotional link between them almost glowed in response to their intimate contact and shared feelings and the warmth of her body rose a bit as he rubbed her shoulder blades lightly. He had never considered that he could be so close to another woman after Shilae died but Lo'ren was so beyond the norm of other women he had met there was no comparison. She laughed a little as they embraced which brought a smile to his lips, he could tell she was holding back on something though he didn't press it. Better to let her flow with the moment. "The closest I come to having siblings is other camp survivors. I only exist because my father was a very smart doctor and figured out how to safely help my mother carry closer to the typical Vulcan 10 months. As a Vulcan I was born 2 months premature, as a Bajoran 3 months overdue. I guess I've always been trouble." "I wouldn't say that." He grinned. "You've never been any trouble to me, quite the opposite as a matter of fact. My family will feel the same way. I think they were worried I wouldn't find anyone like you." "Tell me about them?" She prodded. Where to begin. "Well dad is fifty five and has Lou Gehrigs disease but is receiving a new treatment and the doctors are optimistic he'll make a complete recovery, mom is doing well and just about busted according to him when we showed back up in this timeline. He said she cried for two hours straight." "Sandy is three years younger and I am and just got remarried. Doug is two years younger than her and is contemplating entering the Academy. He's trimmer than I am, or at least he was the last time I saw him though he's just as tall and favors my mother. J John is two years older than me and is the firstborn. He works with the Peace Corps on Earth. He almost died from Typhoid a couple of years ago but is back in full form." "I hear he's going to throw the mother of all parties when I get a chance to return to Earth for a visit. I haven't been back there since I entered starfleet and it's been too long." His voice trailed off. "I didn't realize how much I miss them until I got the message from them earlier today, I guess I haven't been a good son or brother." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Hades - Deck 2, Personal Quarters - CTAC Ensign Lo'ren T'Vof - 19:21) Lo'ren enjoyed hearing about his family - even the less than happy parts. They sounded wonderful - and the thought of having multiple siblings was heavenly to her. She smiled as she let herself be entertained by Jack's descriptions. "I hear he's going to throw the mother of all parties when I get a chance to return to Earth for a visit. I haven't been back there since I entered starfleet and it's been too long." His voice trailed off. "I didn't realize how much I miss them until I got the message from them earlier today, I guess I haven't been a good son or brother." She huffed at that and rolled her eyes, giving a playful slap, "I'll bet you've been about as 'bad' a brother and son as I've been trouble. The war kept a lot of people away from family, but it's well and truly over now. For us it's still close, but for them..." Lo'ren trailed off, thinking about how long it's been since the Occupationof Bajor. ~And yet I still have nightmares.~ She briefly closed her eyes to dispel the shadows - even though she knew Jack could feel them at the edges of their empathic link, "I suppose it will never truly be left behind for some of us." She understood Jack more and more as she equated her own familial loss with his. (Reply Jack) She ran her index finger down his nose playfully, "Well, let's work on making sure.. John was it?" She didn't hide the fact that she wanted to know, but still had to learn, "Let's make sure he doesn't have TOO long to plan his party, hey?" (Reply Jack) She giggled, moving back to the workstation and looking for the transports that they'd need to get to Bajor, and then to Earth - if the Hades wasn't able to take them or loan them a smaller craft. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ (USS Hades - Deck 3, Personal Quarters - ACEO Ensign Eoin Mac Liam - 20:42) Eoin walked into his quarters, after another long day of crawling through Jeffries Tubes. The good news was now he had the permission and the downtime to contact his family. He was glad of this, but he also dreaded it. He knew his parents wouldn't be happy. He sat down at his desk and opened a communication link. "Establish link with Earth. Coordinates 52.7197 mark -8.8893. Mac Liam family." The computer chirped at him. [Link established. Transmitting response.] The image was of two people, a man and a woman. They looked somewhat familiar, but their faces were much more wrinkled and their hair greyer than Eoin remembered. But he smiled at them anyway. "Dia duit, mamaí agus daidí." His mother spoke first. "Ó mo Dhia, a Eoin! Tá sé dhuit!" "Tá sé cúig bliana. Inis siad linn go raibh caillte do long," his father said. Eoin kept the smile on his face, but he felt a tear roll down his face. A tear of joy. "Bhuel, anseo mé. Is oth liom gan dul i dteagmháil leat, ach bhí sé dodhéanta." Then came what Eoin was dreading most. He knew his mother would be very emotional at the sight of her lost son. "Bhí sé dodhéanta? Ní féidir liom cúram faoi sin. An bhfuil aon smaoineamh agat an méid a tharla le linn sna cúig bliana atá caite? Shíl muid a bhí tú marbh!" "Ní raibh mé in ann teagmháil a dhéanamh leat. Bhí sé as mo smacht. Ba mhaith liom bheith i dteagmháil leat más rud é go raibh mé in ann bheith acu, ach ní raibh mé in ann. Sin uile ann chun é." "Ní féidir dtuigeann tú. Tá uaigh anseo mar aon le d'ainm ar sé. Ní féidir leat a bheith i dteagmháil linn, a Eoin. Tá tú marbh." He leaned forward, as though moving six centimetres closer to the screen to close a distance untold light-years wide would make all the difference. "Ach níl mé marbh, mamaí. Táim ag maireachtáil agus análaithe. Cad is féidir liom a chruthú chun tú go bhfuil mé ní hamháin ar figment de do shamhlaíocht?" "Tagann tú abhaile. Thagann tú ar ais go Domhan. Go dtí go ndéanann tú, beidh mé cuairt tú fós sa reilig. Nuair a bhíonn tú arís siúl an dromchla an phláinéid Creidim go bhfuil tú beo agus go maith." "Mam, níl-- Daid, ní féidir leat aontú leis seo. 's Sí a bheith deacair. Tá sé dom. Fhios agat sé dom." "Tá do mháthair ceart, a Eoin. Is deacair a chreidiúint gur leat teagmháil a dhéanamh linn díreach tar éis cúig bliana de rud ar bith. Agus ón Gcabhlach-réalta a inis dúinn, bhí muid áirithe a bhí tú marbh," his father said, putting his hand on the back of his wife's chair. Eoin sighed, surrendering to his parents' will. "An-maith. Mar sin féin, ní féidir liom a dhéanamh ar bith gealltanais faoi nuair a beidh mé a fháil bhaile. Tá mé aon smaoineamh nuair a beidh orainn a cheadú chun filleadh ar an Domhan." "Coinneoimid do sheomra réidh duit, le haghaidh aon uair is féidir leat teacht abhaile." "Go raibh míle maith agat, mamaí, daidí. Is sibh mo ghrá. Ríomhaireachta, a tharchur deireadh." The computer chirped, and the screen went dark. Eoin buried his head in his hands, and cried. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- end compile
