As she entered, Jon noticed her gaze shift to everyone but finally flashed to Jonas Lemar. Her aura indicated feelings of uncertainty when she gazed at him. As Jon looked at her, her aura indicated that she was attempting to suppress her feelings. Then she asked, "Is this a private party, or can anyone join in?" "This is a medical consult, but I guess that is up to Dr. Trommashere and Cmdr Lemar. This is our Romulan specialist counterpart," said Jon gesturing to the Romulan doctor. So far he didn't remember anyone mentioning her name to him. He looked questioningly at the first officer and the CMO. (Posted by Jim McCrary) ===================================================================== (USS Hades – Deck 10, Sickbay – Commander Jonas Lemar & Dr. Alyss Sh’areh – 0842) As the doctor finished with her brief explanation, the Romulan seemed placated for now. It didn’t take the Counsellor long to arrive, and although Jonas was a little annoyed at his tardiness, there were more important things to discuss right now. “Since I have been assigned to the Hades, I have instructed various Sickbay staff on the use of a technique called acupressure which stimulates neural energy in a patient and has been used successfully to wake up a telepathic resistant crewman who was in a coma,” explained counsellor Nayati. “This same technique has been useful in encouraging his recovery so far.” “I see,” replied doctor Sh’areh flatly. She didn’t at all appear impressed with the counsellor’s comments. Looking again toward Angeni she asked, “And do you think that the efforts of a treatment of this kind are particularly beneficial to the patient?” It was clear that she felt it was not the right course of action, and she almost sounded as if she were scolding the CMO for allowing it. (reply: Trommashere) Just then, a familiar voice from the doorway caused Jonas to part-smile, part-panic. As his heart raced, his eyes fell upon Wendy Kildare. “Is this a private party, or can anyone join in?” she asked, making eye contact with most people in the room, at the same time as clearly avoiding doing so with himself. ~I’ve made a fine mess~ the thought slipped into his mind, although he knew that now was not the time for it. As he opened his mouth to speak, he was pipped to the post and never got a chance to make a sound. “This is a medical consult, but I guess that is up to Dr. Trommashere and Cmdr Lemar. This is our Romulan specialist counterpart,” the counsellor had spoken up, and then looked over between Angeni and Jonas. “Doctor Wendy Kildare, this is Doctor Alyss Sh’areh,” Jonas offered with a hand between the two. He had not planned for Wendy to be present at this meeting, but he was sure that her presence couldn’t help. He only hoped it wouldn’t throw him off his game. (reply: Trommashere, Kildare) Deciding to give the meeting some kind of focus, Jonas decided to take charge. He didn’t feel great doing so, given that it was Doctor Trommashere that had handled the Captain’s treatment so far, but he had things to do today, and this was only one small part of it. “I assume you have been briefed on the current condition of our Captain Sash?” For the first time, Doctor Sh’areh seemed to look at Jonas with actual respect. ~Maybe we did just get off on the wrong foot~ he thought with an inner smile. ~Let’s hope things improve as we move forward~ “From the notes I have already received, courtesy of your Ambassador Frazier, I see that physically your patient still has a lot of recovering to do.” She opened her small case and took out a small display device that Jonas assumed was similar to the dataPADDs that they used in day to day life. “I have a number of applications that, when used correctly, can enhance tissue regeneration in Angossian males by up to 400%.” Looking up from her notes she looked at Doctor Trommashere and said, “My advice would be to start this course of treatment at once.” (reply: any) “We will use an adaptation of a gene used in the genetically enhanced Angossian males. We have made great steps in the research since the Angossian’s first developed it over 100 years ago.” Doctor Sh’areh smiled as she spoke. She was clearly very proud of the work she was speaking of. (reply: any) “However, your neural scans are very interesting to me. I have studied them in some depth in the past few hours, and it seems to me that you Captain’s condition is no hampered by his physical condition, but by his mental condition.” As she allowed that realisation to settle in she asked, “Have you tried any sort of neural, or even telepathic, medicines so far?” (posted by Dave) ===================================================================== (USS Hades - Deck 10, Sickbay - CCOUNS Ensign Jon Nayati – 0844) I see," replied Doctor Sh'areh flatly. Jon could readily see that the Romulan doctor wasn't at all impressed by his previous comments. ~ Sh'areh's Romulan ethnocentricity was understandable since she had no grounding in either aura perception or the medical use of tactical pressure to manipulate the basic chi energy that all living beings produce to induce a given patient's return to consciousness.~ Looking again toward Angeni Sh'areh asked, "And do you think that the efforts of a treatment of this kind are particularly beneficial to the patient?" It was clear to Jon that Dr. Sh'areh felt that that treatment was not the right course of action, and the Romulan doctor's voice was almost scolding Dr Angeni for allowing the use of acupressure. Looking at Dr. Sh'areh's chi, Jon saw some condensation in the Romulan female's aura as well. ~Does Dr. Sh'areh think we're a bunch of savages, Great Sprite,~ Jon wondered to himself, a bit incensed. As this meeting was a first time cross UFP-RSE medical consult, with Captain Sash's health at sake, Jon resolved to keep his own counsel, until he felt his professional input was needed again. ~After all, the most important now was Captain Sash's most expedient recovery. Maybe Sh'areh's Romulan medicine had something to offer Captain Sash that UFP medicine didn't.~ Jon was determined to see that hopeful idea out as the rest of the doctors started to discuss Captain Sash's medical condition in detail. Jon was still thinking that hope when Dr. Wendy Kildare entered the sickbay saying; "is this a private party, or can anyone join in?" Jon nodded in silent recognition, wondering if too many cooks would now spoil Captain Sash's medical stew. That was actually a good idea as far as Dale was concerned to a point, the problem was though while the Impulse engines could hold them in orbit the power loss would be great and readily noted by the Romulans and it was never a good idea to barter or negotiate from weakness, the ambassodor would have her knees cut out from under her metaphorically speaking and their chance for a substantive treaty could be scuttled. That wasn't Dales call though, under the circumstances only the chief with the FO's backing could make that decision. (reply: Harper) =^= Well, it was just a suggestion.=^= Dale grinned as he hefted the oscillator, "Any other time I'd be shouting for joy at that suggestion Dana." The settings had been readied and he moved the probe of the device toward the opening, as it penetrated there was a brief flash of blue sparks that made him pull back for an instant. "getting jumpy there Dale..." He mumbled under his breath and reinserted the oscillator, this time he was prepared and held himself steady. It couldn't touch the circuitry on the sides so he had to hold it carefully, he was only half-listening as the ACEO called again. =^= I’m going to do my best to reduce the flow in your section. It should take some of the heat off you Dale...although you better get this right. We could still go kaboom with this.=^= That brought a relieved grin to his face again. "Bless you lassie." After an instant of thought he added. ""When you bring the rate down you can compensate by tweaking the intermix formula with a dose of macroparticulates and an adjustment to the alignment of the containment field." There he was getting chatty again, it happened sometimes when he was nervous and here he was telling the ACEO how to do her job. "Sorry about that, my bad." (Reply: Dana iyw) :-) He raised the frequency slowly, inserting a magnetic device this near the antimatter stream would make the ship go boom, hence the roundabout way of loosening the part. Normally he would use the 837.5 mHZ frequency to uncouple the sensor but the microfractures would cause it to burst under the strain so he had to start at a lower frequency and work his way up gently, after it was loosened he had a pair of tongs that had been demagnetized before he had entered the jeffries tube, people who were thorough were sometimes thought to be slow and Dale had learned to be very thorough during his time in StarFleet. He was up to 630 mHZ now, he didn't dare go any higher, if it was coming out it would have to be now. He also noticed that the background electromagnetic flux that Montgomery Scott had once likened to "Hands crawling all over my body" had abated a bit thanks to the work of Dana Travis, he made a mental note to thank her by buying drinks if she was ever interested. "I'm inserting the tongs now, trying to bring it out." The tongs gripped it firmly thanks to a synthetic material that was dialectric in nature, it not only wouldn't conduct electricity but was also resistant to heavy doses of radiation like that normally found in warp drive systems, it would take a lot of punishment before fraying or giving out. "It won't break loose!" He said as he pried on the sensor, fearing if he pulled too hard it would fracture under the strain. "I can't get it out!" He growled more from frustration than anything else. "How much time do I have left?" (Reply: Dana or Norm) He took a deep breath, forcing himself to calm down, two minutes was more than enough if he could just break it loose. Replacing the tongs closed to the base he began rocking it slowly, at first there was no give but just when he was close to giving up and trying a different tack the sensor began moving just a bit. "We're finally getting somewhere." The more he rocked it the looser it was getting, he slowed down so that he wouldn't lose it. {Ninety seconds is an eternity when you're this close.} "One more tug..." It came free at last, he squelched the reflex to jerk it through the opening and eased it out, after it was clear he clutched it to his chest as he lay on his back in the tube and breathed several steadying breaths, he could hear someone calling over the com. (Reply: Norm or Dana) "It's out." He took one last breath then eased the sensor into the bag and took out the replacement part. "I'm putting in the replacement now. Thanks for the assist Dana." (Reply: Dana iyw) It took only a couple of minutes for the new sensor to be inserted and the plate closed. (posted by Charles) ===================================================================== (USS Hades – Deck 14, Main Engineering – Maintenance Engineer Dale Grey – 0908) Dale crawled free of the jeffries tube and nodded to the chief as he set down the toolpouch. "All done chief." He noted Dana Travis was on her way toward them and waited for her to get near then stooped down and reached into his pouch. Bringing out the sensor he held it in his right hand with the base out, the rounded point of the dull metal part cupped against his palm. "Nasty little bugger." Closing his hand on it he expected it to give a bit, not shatter into thousands of tiny fragments with a puff of dust that fell to the floor in a heap. Looking up at the two he gave them a sickly grin. "Closer than I would have liked." He could feel his stomach begin to boil and he turned quickly to move off. "Pardon me while I run to the head." He hoped he would make it before he lost his breakfast. He was on Romulus. He signed and wiped his forehead, mostly out of habit, rather than clearing it of anything. He was not found of transporters; Being broken down into billions of pieces and then being build up again. You had to trust that the technology was working fine, or your hand could end up on your head, or something. He knew that he was just trying to distract himself until he fully materialise, but that happed seconds ago. Being Science Officers at heart, both he and Ensign Shayhiloosh simultaneously pulled out their recorders and checked if they worked. Kenny tested it by taking notes the atmosphere; Apart from a slight difference in quantity than Earth, the air was oxygen/hydrogen. At lest his tricorder worked. Kenny suddenly realised he could smell plants. Powerfull, but nice, plants. They seemed to give off a strong sent, like Earth lilies. Kenny saw what he belived to be the Romulin welcome party approach them. Several...What Kenny believed where called "Centurions" and a man in the middle of the group. Lt. Carrow approached them and introduced the party. While the Head of Science did this, Kenny turned his head behind him to look at some of the plants...and to check if there was anyone there. You could not be too cearful. At the mention of his name, Kenny turned back around. "If I may introduce my team? My two departmental leaders, Ensign Kenneth McKenzie and Ensign Shayhiloosh." "Greetings." said Kenny, bowing his head. As Shayhiloosh spoke through hir leaves, Kenny felt that s/he sounded different, almost nervous. Once Lt Carrow turned back and the two Heads exchanged welcomes, Kenny nudged over to the Arborian. "Ensign." Kenny whispered. "Are you OK? You seem on edge." She was not displeased by the fact, as each new corridor and chamber held a different piece of artwork, or philosophical masterpiece. By the time they finally came to a stop, she was already in no small amount of awe. But even then, it did not stop there, as they were led beyond the solid golden doors to yet another small wing of rooms and corridors. When Ejuil finally brought them to their destination, Bree had half a mind to ask why they couldn’t just transport to a spot closer to this locale, but then, if they had done so they would never have been graced with the opportunity to see so much Romulan artistry – works that they were clearly very proud of. They were standing inside what Bree would describe simply as some kind of biodome. It was a large room with a completely glass roof, and surrounding them on all sides were all manner of planets, shrubs, and flowers. Directly before them was large stone-floored area, upon which was a fairly large table. The table looked set for a meal, and as Bree counted, there were enough places set for everyone in the away team, as well as for the Praetor himself. And then, already seated at the head of the table was the very person they had been invited to meet. Praetor Vrih appeared to be reviewing some kind of data on a hand-held device, but as he noticed the arrival of Ejuil and their small band of diplomats, he appeared to put down the device and look up with a smile. Ejuil moved to take the device from the Praetor, who relinquished it gladly and pushed to stand from his seat. “Welcome Ambassador,” he started, looking at each one in turn. “Please, won’t you all take a seat?” Praetor smiled warmly and genuinely, then retook his own seat and waited for everyone else to do the same. “You are very kind Praetor...” started Bree as she moved to approach the table, already decided on which seat she would sit in. “Please, we are all friends here,” cut in the Romulan Praetor with nothing but kindness in his tone. “Call me Vrih.” As Bree pulled out the chair, it was far lighter then she had expected. That, coupled with the offer of informality from the Praetor, threw her a little off guard. Still, she moved close to the table and seated herself while saying, “Then please, call me Bree.” As she smiled, she was glad to notice that she still retained her Betazoid senses. Whatever precautions that had been taken during the negotiations, were clearly designed for that purpose, and the Praetor was not really worried about suppressing her abilities here. ~Another sign of confidence and trust~ she noted as her eyes gazed over the elegant table. (reply: Trinin, Grem, any) Within moments, four servants came from out of nowhere and began to upturn the glasses on the tables so that they were the right way up. Then, they brought around jugs of clear, orange, and pale yellow fluids. As they approached the away team, Praetor added, “Just tell the waiters what you would like to drink. Here is water, Terran-Orange Juice, and our native Daktarn Juice.” Pleasantly surprised that there were some familiar things on offer, Bree was really interested to know what the local beverages were like. “What is the Daktarn Juice?” she asked, looking at the Praetor with a pleasing smile. Then her eyes shot back to the waiters as they continued their approach to the table. It was not the Praetor that answered, but his Aide Ejuil. “I believe you will find it quite unique. It has a bitterness that is quite refreshing to the mind, but also a sweetness that is quite pleasurable.” Ejuil stopped one of the waiters before he reached the table, and took an empty glass from the table top. Taking the jug filled with the Daktarn Juice, he poured a little into the glass and carried it the few steps toward the Ambassador. Bree took the glass with a curious look about her, and as she sipped the liquid all manner of sensations burst into her mouth. Taking a few moments to register what she was drinking, she turned to the others in her group and said, “It has a taste similar to Lemonade, although it has a sour kick to it that is really quite refreshing.” Turning back to Ejuil, she handed back the now empty glass, indicating she would like a full glass of the Daktarn juice. Ejuil bowed his head and handed the glass to the waiter, who was no right behind him. “Very well,” said Praetor in a jovial tone. He was cleared pleased to see that the Ambassador was having a nice time and hoped that the rest of her team would soon be doing likewise. “Let us begin with the first course Ejuil,” “As you wish Praetor,” Ejuil replied, and quickly scurried off to summon the necessary staff. I can place them on line and gain marginal improvements =^= “Great...” Tarus muttered, expressing an uncharacteristically drop in his professional approach. “...so that’s a no then?” =^= I will place them on-line and work the proto type off-line if OK with you =^= “Well, I guess some improvements are better than nothing at all, but I need this up and running. Make it your highest priority,” he said aloud, but he was really wondering if he should inform the First Officer. He was certain that Jonas Lemar would not be pleased that the modifications were not complete, and he – like Tarus – would want an explanation as to why it was not given more focus. (reply: Jackson) “I’m in tactical planning. Let me know when you have put the modifications online” said Tarus finally. With that, he decided to sit and wait for Jackson to get into position. (posted by Dave) ===================================================================== (USS Hades – Deck 10, CMO’s Office – Commander Jonas Lemar – 0915) The past half an hour had been a mixture of success and failure. Every member of this team had an opinion on each of the treatments being suggested, on how effective it might be, on how long it might take, and whether it would be what the Captain wanted. Jonas had given his opinion as much as everyone, but one thing was for certain, this meeting was far from over and he wished they would all stop talking about it and agree on something. As it was, time was ticking away. He had other plans for this morning, mainly his invite to the Donatra by Commander Rhian. He was due onboard about 0930, so if he was going to be on time he needed to wrap things up here – or at the very least get to a point where he could excuse himself. “Listen people, I know we all have our reservations and doubts, but we need to make a choice here. Nothing is getting done with all this talking. Let’s start with some action.” Jonas looked around the group, and for the first time he noticed that Doctor Sh’areh was smiling at him. “Finally, I think your commander has a point.” She was careful with her tone, and it once again left Jonas wondering if she had just insulted him again. “Thank you...I think” he said, giving her an uncertain glance. “Now I’m afraid I have another appointment to attend to so you are going to have to see this through without me.” Jonas stood up from the table, his eyes landing on Wendy Kildare. He offered her a smile, hoping that she would look up and notice it. (reply: Trommashere, Nayati, Kildare, any) “Doctor, I have confidence in you to make the right decision here,” Jonas spoke to Angeni. He was aware her self-confidence was a little low right now, but it really wasn’t what he needed from his own CMO. “Go wake our Captain up people.” He said, and then he turned on his heel and marched out of the office. Lt Daban was giving his a hard time about the sensor modifications. Didn't the man realize Tom was also doing double duty as a member of the Diplomatic Team? Sighing, tom responded to Lt Daban's comment with " I will place them on-line and work the proto type off-line if OK with you". Daban replied "Well, I guess some improvements are better than nothing at all, but I need this up and running. Make it your highest priority," Cursing, in Ferengi, under his breath, Jackson replied "Understood - Jackson out". Jackson typed the needed commands in to transfer the enhancements from the test system to the production system. This took a couple of minutes. Tom made sure things were running smoothly before he called Lt Daban. Tom watched and saw nothing was seemingly out of order and contacted Lt Daban. "LT Daban, Lt Jackson here - modifications are online." (reply: Lt Daban) Tom listened to the obvious frustration in Daban's voice. Sighing, Tom returned to his tests. (Posted by: Bill West) ===================================================================== (USS Hades - Deck 1, Main Bridge – COPS Lt. Maraht & OO Ensign James Fredericks - 0921) Maraht looked at the OPS assignments and read through the report from Ensign Harry Doorman. He hoped that Ensign Fredericks could help with it. He was not able to work with it himself having been left the CONN. He knew the sensors might require some manual adjusting to filter out the signal disruption and he felt frustrated that he could not do it himself. But that was why he could delegate these things to his departmental staff. A resigned ripple moved through his finer phalangi. Accessing the report from the arm of the center seat while he stood beside it, he sent it to Ensign Fredericks who had taken his place at the regular OPS station. "Ensign Fredericks, please read the report and look into it. Can you see who is working on this at the moment and see if they need any help? You may be able to give them a hand with it from the bridge if need be. Check with my ACOPS Lt. Jackson first if you would. He might know and could have assigned someone to it already." "Aye Sir," answered James. Nodding, he turned his blond head to his console and read through the report for some time and whistled softly. "Lt. Maraht, I am impressed. This is a pretty good set of equations and the algorithm that Ensign Doorman worked up checks out. His computations do look pretty good. They are sure complex. I am contacting Lt. Jackson right now Sir." Tapping his commbadge, the OPS Ensign said, "Ensign James Fredericks to Lt. Jackson." (Reply Tom Jackson) "Has someone been assigned to the task of implementing the modifications to the ship for the signal filter setup? Lt. Maraht wanted to know if anyone needed any help with this. Right now he has the CONN. We saw it's listed as a high priority assignment." (Reply Tom Jackson) "If you need help, Lt. Maraht wanted me to give you a hand from here. Things are pretty quiet right now on the Bridge, Sir. If you want to come up to the Bridge to work, you could work from an extra station, or we could work through the computer system, if you like." (Posted by Sheila Mayer) ===================================================================== (USS Hades – Deck 16, Tactical Planning – SO Lieutenant Tarus Daban – 0924) Sitting and waiting around was never one of Daban’s strong points, so he was please when it only took a few minutes for Jackson to sound out on the comm. system again. =^= Lt. Tarus, Lt. Jackson here - modifications are online =^= Standing up and moving over to the tactical holographic screen, he activated it. “Computer, display away team locations and magnify.” At once, the screen split into two, a spinning globe displayed in each half. As the computer pinpointed the location of the two groups, red and green flashing markers appeared on the screen and they soon zoomed in with maximum magnification to the surroundings of each team. At that point, the image appeared to scramble with interference for a few seconds, and then return to normal, only to scramble again a few seconds later, but then to be normal again. With a short tap to his comm. badge he said, “There is still some intermittent interference. I can pick up the lifesigns, but I’m not reading anything definite on their surroundings.” (reply: Jackson) Daban listened as Jackson worked to modify the sensors further, with the aid of Ensign Fredericks on the bridge. It wasn’t too many minutes before the screen cleared and Tarus once more bent over to examine it more closely. Now in crystal clear resolution, Tarus could see each team member now represented now by a series of Starfleet insignia’s, and the surrounding walls and buildings were displayed in simple green wire-frame. Impressed at the change in the resolution from that of the day before, Tarus took a moment or two to note the size and scale of the two structures that each of the teams were in. Ambassador Frazier and her small entourage were inside what appeared to me a small complex attached to the main Senate Building, while the science teams were in an equally large structure, although distinctly more modern in design, approximately 2.5 kilometres away. ~At least they’re close enough together for us to keep tabs on them all at once~ thought Daban to himself. “Well done Lieutenant. Things are looking much clearer now. Whatever you did has done the trick.” Tarus circled the holographic image and picked up a dataPADD. Accessing some further details, he noticed a mention of comm. signal interference being resolved in a similar fashion. “I notice the comm. system filters are not yet in place. If you can, I’d like you to see to those as your next highest priority.” (reply: Jackson) With a smile, Tarus set to examining the away team locations in more detail. If a true emergency occurred, it would still be very difficult to extract them. Apparently, transporter inhibitors were still in operation. They would only be able to use the designated beam down coordinates to get a team in, and unfortunately both away teams were quite a distance from those areas at this point in time. Tarus contemplated that. (posted by Dave) ===================================================================== (USS Hades - Deck 6, Operations Office - A/COPS Lt Tom Jackson - 0926) Jackson, had with Ensign Fredricks assistance, had cleared most of the interference and that gave Taurs Daban a better fix on the planet side teams. =^=There is still some intermittent interference. I can pick up the life signs, but I'm not reading anything definite on their surroundings=^= replied the Security Officer. "wait One" Jackson replied. Tom adjusted the scans narrowing them a tad and boosting the power. "Try these" Tom replied. (reply: Lt Daban) These changes seemed to get the SO what he needed. Tom, in spite, of himself, smiled. =^=Well done Lieutenant. Things are looking much clearer now. Whatever you did has done the trick=^= Daban told Jackson. "Actually, it was due to Ensign Fredricks suggestion" Jackson added. (reply: any) Tom relaxed, stretched his body and sent a note to Cmdr Lamar praising Ensign Fredricks efforts. Maraht Cmdr Jonas Lemar is attending a meeting in Sickbay with Dr Trommashere, Counselor Nayati and Dr. Sha'reh, a Romulan medical consultant who specializes in Angosian physiology, to try to help Captain Sash. How the Romulan people have come across Angosians in order to produce a specialist is beyond my current need to comprehend. I shudder to contemplate how they have obtained their research. Much of our Science department is down below on the planet, apparently getting some kind of tour of a research facility from the last we have heard. They seem to be all right. Current telemetry on their life signs is looking much better since Lt. Jackson has implemented the signal filters for their bio signs. The data uplink is working well. The signal filters in place are allowing the science teams' tricorders to download their data at need. So far the readings and pictures, both still and moving, are fascinating. They seem to be in some sort of lab and the haughty looking Romulan in charge of their tour has unbent enough to talk about the research in harnessing the power of singularity emissions. Soon Cmdr Lemar will be going over to the Romulan ship, the Donatra, for a tour along with Ensign T'Sol and Lt. Tom Jackson. Perhaps that will further our cause with the Romulan people and persuade them that being allies with the Federation is a good idea. I suppose that will leave me on the Bridge for a while yet. Although so far its been peaceful, I can't help but wish I could go down to Romulus with the Science teams. I guess I am still a scientist at heart, especially when it comes to the unknown. The treaty negotiations will begin later after midday. All of those on our diplomatic team seemed exhausted from what little I saw of them. I hope they will make more headway today. I am optimistic that the Romulan people will become less suspicious of us as the talks continue. Trust will have to happen on their part at some point, but only time will tell. I am of the opinion that it should be sooner rather than later. Maraht out. (Posted by Sheila) ===================================================================== (Romulus - Institute of Advanced Scientific Studies, Courtyard - Science Council Prefect Xerius - 0933) After Xerius imparted his greetings from the council he watched Lieutenant Carrow make a half-bow in his direction, after showing him respect she spoke. "It is our honour," This placated Xerius somewhat as she began introducing the other members of her party, it did not escape his notice either that she was a vulcanoid, whether full blood or mixed was not obvious externally though of course he knew from the earlier briefing she had human blood. It was also noticable she was a bit on the pale side and her unconcious mannerisms indicated some measure of illness though she took great pains to hide it. This also he noticed with some pleasure though he knew Vulcans and their kin were touch telepaths which made them less dangerous unless in close proximity. The next being was of some interest, he had never seen an Arborian before in person though he had heard of them. The tree being spoke in an airy manner, not through lungs as on a normal being but some other means, the unmistakable inhaling and exhaling it was doing through some expansive foliage was a surprise to him as was the deferential words it spoke. "Warm breezes and clear waters to you, Sir. I, Shayhiloosh, am the only Arborian officer on the Hades. As Lt. Carrow's assistant, I specialize in botanical studies and the impact of environmental factors on plants. I look forward to seeing your homeworld." The eyestalk which protruded from the foliage was curious, the voice was in a word musical and Xerius found himself enthralled for an instant, he covered it quickly though, the clenching of his teeth returning as the human male nodded toward him.. "Greetings." Xerius gave a stiff nod in return, wondering once again why the Praetor had placed it upon his shoulders the duty of escorting these beings about the laboratories, perhaps he trusted only him to make sure their secrets remained safe, then again perhaps this was an object lesson in interspecies relations, Xerius would not put such past him. Nodding toward the Centurion who had come with him he spoke. "This is Tellus, my centurion retainer, the security of myself and this fact-finding party is his responsibility. I of course am Xerius, chairman and President of the Romulan Council of Science and Technology. As we have all been introduced I assume you are ready to begin the tour of the grounds." He looked quickly about to see if there were any dissent though it was of no interest to him, if they wished to be shown about they would come, if not they could remain behind under guard for all he cared. Turning about on a heel he made for the heart of the monolithic structure. (posted by Charles ===================================================================== (Romulus - Institute of Advanced Scientific Studies, Singularity lab - Science Council Prefect Xerius - 0940) Several empty labs were passed as he walked briskly toward to the first stop on the tour, the lab contained nothing of which the Federation was not already aware and were deemed to be safe for inspection, the more sensitive areas like those he had escorted them past had been stripped of all sensitive material some time before. Stopping before a heavy valve which opened to the sides he stopped and turned toward them. "This way." Placing his hand upon a touch sensitive pad he waited till the heavy doors had slid aside then walked quickly in. The laboratory beyond was expansive and filled with electronic machinery, the most striking feature however was the wall of glasslike material across the room, beyond this and inside another spacious lab technicians in protective gear were manning stations about a dias of metal which was studded with sensors and electrodes. Above the dais was an orb of black approximately one meter in diameter like a hole in space/time. Pointing toward it as he walked he introduced the scene. "This is a lab based on singularity power generation, what is often called by many species a black hole. It is a falacy of which you are aware I am sure that a singularity absorbs yet allows nothing to escape its grasp, this could not be further from the truth. In magnetic phenomena the north and south polar regions radiate the lines of magnetic flux called the magnetic field, the singularity does likewise, from its north and south polar regions it radiates intense plumes of radioactive emissions which we have learned to harness. These men are experimenting with differing paticulate infusions to find the most stable and balanced fuel source in order to make the generation from those emissions more efficient." (Reply: Any) "Are there any questions about this lab before I take you to the arboretum?" He asked, his eyes moving over each of them in turn as he noted the instruments they were using and the interest they were or were not showing to a marvel of Romulan technology. (Posted by Charles) ===================================================================== (Romulus - Institute of Advanced Scientific Studies, Singularity lab - Science Officer Ensign Harry Doorman - 0945) Harry gave a short curt nod and greeting to the Prefect of the Science Institute. he was not surprised when he was not addressed in return simply because Lt. Carrow had introduced the ACSO officers and really left the rest to fend for themselves. There was a bit of introductions between the CSO and her assistants and Harry just kept his brain working on minor mathematical formulae until eventually the tour was underway. Personally he would have rather skipped the sterilized looking labs and gone right to the survey site. Besides, Harry was starting to work on a headache of mega-proportions and didn't feel much like listening to a canned lecture when he could be collecting data instead. They stepped into a lab that was obviously dedicated to the study and development of the quantum energy sources, also known as singularities. "This is a lab based on singularity power generation, what is often called by many species a black hole. It is a fallacy of which you are aware I am sure that a singularity absorbs yet allows nothing to escape its grasp, this could not be further from the truth. "Are there any questions about this lab before I take you to the arboretum?" He asked. "If I may prefect, inquire as to how your specialists have overcome the inaccuracies in the Tnok-Firen equations that were in use twenty-years ago? Have they abandoned those original equations in favor of a new quantum zero-point series or have they evolved the equations to include the variables suggested by the Naresh equations defining the transmutation of energy states at the point of the event horizon And thereby adjusting the entire third order subset and the Hiren series through the use of the results of those equations?" Harry asked, genuinely interested in hearing the answer. Each of the theories and formulae that he had referenced were crucial to singularity formation, maintenance and power output, additionally they had all been developed, defined and postulated by only the brightest Romulan mathematical minds. Their work was disseminated, although at an incredibly slow pace, thus the reason that Harry was asking about theorems and formulae roughly two decades old. To be able to speak with one of the minds that had devised and created the artificial singularity would have been a dream come true. S/he was able to relax a little and extended all three of hir eyestalks around hirself in an effort to not miss anything. She took readings as s/he went, noting some odd patterns that looked familiar. Shayhiloosh had seen these before in use with various telepathic species for purposes of medical treatment, but Shayhiloosh knew those were for small well controlled areas, and not so widespread or strong as this appeared. It was obvious that they were using telepathic dampening fields, and Shayhiloosh worried that it might be causing Ensign Doorman and Lt. Carrow to suffer adverse effects. Lt. Carrow particularly did not look well. Shayhiloosh wondered if s/he would feel the effects of this field when on the Dreamplane or if it would not allow hir to access the Dreamplane at all while in the building. The energy reading had not appeared while they were unaccompanied by the Romulan Administrator Reyeul or the Prefect. Stopping before a heavy valve which opened to the sides the Prefect turned toward them saying, "This way." Placing his hand upon a touch sensitive pad, he waited till the heavy doors had slid aside, then walked in quickly. The laboratory beyond was expansive and filled with electronic machinery. The most striking feature, however, was the wall of glasslike material across the room. Beyond this and inside another spacious lab, technicians in protective gear were manning stations about a dias of metal which was studded with sensors and electrodes. Above the dais was an orb of black approximately one meter in diameter like a hole in space/time. Pointing toward it the Prefect walked, as he introduced the scene. "This is a lab based on singularity power generation, what is often called by many species a black hole. It is a fallacy of which you are aware, I am sure, that a singularity absorbs yet allows nothing to escape its grasp. This could not be further from the truth. The singularity does likewise; from its north and south polar regions it radiates intense plumes of radioactive emissions which we have learned to harness. These men are experimenting with differing particulate infusions to find the most stable and balanced fuel source in order to make the generation from those emissions more efficient." The explanation was put into layman's terms enough for Shayhiloosh to understand. S/he understood the basics enough to formulate a question, but hesitated. S/he was uncertain if they would be allowed to ask questions. S/he took readings of the singularity and its setup and got a jumble of readings, probably due to the emissions the Prefect had mentioned. S/he was able to take some still pictures that s/he was sure came out relatively well of the singularity and its set up. Narrowing hir scan, Shayhiloosh was able to scan the equipment in the room in which they were standing with only a moderate amount of interference. "Are there any questions about this lab before I take you to the arboretum?" asked the Romulan Prefect, his eyes moving over each of them in turn. Shayhiloosh silently rejoiced at the mention of the Arboretum, but kept hir joy to hirself. S/he longed to experience the plant ecosystem of Romulus and was seized with intense curiosity. S/he sternly tamped down hir enthusiasm and kept on using one of the three tricorders s/he held gently in hir roots. "If I may prefect, inquire as to how your specialists have overcome the inaccuracies in the Tnok-Firen equations that were in use twenty years ago?" asked Ensign Harry Doorman. "Have they abandoned those original equations in favor of a new quantum zero point series or have they evolved the equations to include the variables suggested by the Naresh equations defining the transmutation of energy states at the point of the event horizon and thereby adjusting the entire third order subset and the Hiren series through the use of the results of those equations?" Ensign Doorman seemed genuinely interested in hearing the answer. Shayhloosh kept hir rich amusement to hirself and looked forward to hearing the answer to such a detailed and complex question. S/he was not certain s/he understood the question very well hirself since s/he was not a physicist or a mathematician, but s/he thought s/he understood the basic premise of what Ensign Doorman was asking. S/he wondered if the question would cause confusion with the Prefect or if he would respond well to Ensign Doorman. (Reply Xerius, Harry Doorman, Any) "Not being a physicist, Sir, I would like to know how the singularity is contained in layman's terms," spoke up Shayhiloosh. "If it is magnetic and therefore has flux, then is it contained using something akin to the magnetic bottles that contain antimatter on our own ship, with carefully polarized fields? Or due to its magnetic qualities and the radioactive power emissions, is it contained in force fields, or something else?" (Reply Xerius, Any) "I am also curious to know why you would have such advanced yet potentially powerful technology here on your planet," said Shayhiloosh. "If there were an accident, an uncontrolled singularity could potentially destroy your entire planet very quickly. You could have set it up on a ship or space station where it would not immediately cause destruction and loss of life, and you would then have a better chance for containment. Why have this lab here on your homeworld? Have there ever been any singularity accidents in your people's history?" (Posted by Sheila Mayer) ===================================================================== (Romulus - Institute of Advanced Scientific Studies, Singularity lab - Science Council Prefect Xerius - 0946) "If I may prefect..." Xerius turned to a non-descript human male with reddish hair who was in the landing party and wearing the blue of their sciences division, he was completely unprepared for the question that followed. "May I inquire as to how your specialists have overcome the inaccuracies in the Tnok-Firen equations that were in use twenty-years ago? Have they abandoned those original equations in favor of a new quantum zero-point series or have they evolved the equations to include the variables suggested by the Naresh equations defining the transmutation of energy states at the point of the event horizon And thereby adjusting the entire third order subset and the Hiren series through the use of the results of those equations?" ~It's true some data is undoubtedly known by the Federation but where? How? Did they insinuate an advanced theroretical physicist into the landing party for just such an opportunity? Have I made a mistake?~ The haughty look on Xerius' face was replaced by one of actual interest coupled with something else. "I see you know something about the subject Mr...?" (Reply: Harry) "Mr. Doorman." Xerius said slowly and gave a sidelong glance at Tellus who gave an almost imperceptable nod then turned and pretended to examine a piece of equipment. Xerius motioned for Harry to come nearer as he flagged down one of the scientists and through a quick series of hand signals transmitted his instructions. Reaching down the Romulan flicked a button and typed something quickly into it. "Technician Goren is slaving his panel to the this one." Xerius stepped to a nearby control panel and activated it. A graph appeared on the glassine wall before the company. A score of colored lines undulated across the screen sporting a number of spikes and drops at regular intervals against a grid backdrop rating from -30 to +30 vertically and from -100 to +100 horizontally, the lines which showed atomic weight dipped below the zero at regular intervals into the negative region approximately equal to their positive positions. "It is always easier to use pictures and symbols to answer someones question than only words, especially for those who are not well versed in the subject; pardon me while I do a bit of both." In essence he was begging Harry's pardon for making the subject easier for all to understand, quite a departure from his earlier manner. He looked about to make sure he had everyone's attention. "The lines represent radioactive isotopes emitted by the singularity, the red line is an isotope of Hydrogen." With his finger Xerius traced the red line from left to right. "Hydrogen has an atomic weight of one and should therefore hold that weight throughout its circuit, as you can see though its weight is fluctuating from -1 to +1 at regular intervals." Having that as a foundation he could now get into teaching, soimething he had always loved. "The Tnok- Firen equations you referenced theorized that radioactive isotopes in reference to a singularity were losing neutrons to the heavy gravitational pull and regaining their numbers and therefore atomic weight through other emissions, capturing as it were neutrons that had been stripped from the atomic structure of other elements, it was therefore often referred to as the negative neutron theory. The Naresh equations were built upon the Negative Neutron theory and attempted to describe the conversions of matter as it underwent this constant variability. These theories worked very well except for the unavoidable hiccup." Xerius touched two buttons simultaneously and another graph was overlaid over the initial one. "Here you see that within two nanometers there is a regular pulse of increased instability." The overlaid graph was being constantly updated, every 2 cycles every radioactive isotope 'jumped' out of its circuit by varying degrees depending on the isotope, hydrogen staying within -3 to +3, all 'jumps' occuring within two nanometers of a point on the displayed graph. (Reply: Any) Xerius smiled this time and returned to the subject. "The Tnok-Firen equations were unable to solve this irregularity which we now know to be caused by instability in the singularity itself, this is referenced as the vortex constant. The quantum zero point series you referenced is used to predict the vortex constant where the mass, graviational flux of the event horizon and the speed of the radioactive isotopes being expelled from the poles is known. An artificial singularity such as this one is inherently more unstable than one which occurs naturally." Now was the time to wrap up the lecture. "The original Naresh equations failed to take into account the gravitational lensing exerted by the terrific force of the event horizon and has been updated, we now use Hiren's equations of the sixth series with the Quantum zero point series and Naresh equations; we have found these mathematical formulas used in conjunction to be within .883 percent of actual value for an artificially created singularity and within 1.97 percent for describing a supermassive black hole." He looked around with the air of a delighted schoolmaster, forgetting for a moment his distaste for all things Federation. "There is more work to be done to tame that inefficiency, work which you see being done before you. Are there any other questions?" The Arborian Shayhiloosh was the next to speak up. "Not being a physicist, Sir, I would like to know how the singularity is contained in layman's terms, If it is magnetic and therefore has flux, then is it contained using something akin to the magnetic bottles that contain antimatter on our own ship, with carefully polarized fields? Or due to its magnetic qualities and the radioactive power emissions, is it contained in force fields, or something else?" Xerius inhaled a sharp breath before replying as he organized his thoughts. " The two phenomena, magnetic fields and singularity emissions are certainly interrelated as the magnetic field within a singularity exerts a profound influence on the properties of the black hole and affects its behavior but the two are not the same. Gravity is the other major factor and because of its intensity tends to warp the magnetic field and bend space/time. As for how we contain the singularity..." Xerius waved his hand toward the working technicians. "An ordinary forcefield would be overpowered by the gravitic turbulance exerted by it, a system of anti-gravity fields carefully calibrated to hold it stationary and electromagnetic fields to contain the highly energetic emissions along with sensitive equipment to continually monitor its state is therefore necessary. " This seemed to only partially satisfy the Arborian who asked a follow-up question. "I am also curious to know why you would have such advanced yet potentially powerful technology here on your planet," s/he said. "If there were an accident, an uncontrolled singularity could potentially destroy your entire planet very quickly. You could have set it up on a ship or space station where it would not immediately cause destruction and loss of life, and you would then have a better chance for containment. Why have this lab here on your homeworld? Have there ever been any singularity accidents in your people's history?" That was an obvious question yet Xerius nodded sagely nonetheless, he was having a pleasurable experience discussing the technology with the Federation scientists who seemed to know far more than he would have imagined but were interested it seemed in soaking up all they could learn of the discipline. What he had considered a perfunctory stop at the lab had turned into a good outing, the only hesitation in his mind was if they trod onto classified ground, he found to his surprise it would be unsatisfying to have to cut their investigations short: Such as now. "Why do we have singularity power generation on our homeworld?" Xerius took a couple of steps to his left then reversed the movement as he spoke. "Obviously the science has progressed to the point where we are confident in our control of it, the initial experiments were carried out on remote planetoids for safety's sake and the details of any failures of such are unfortunately unavailable." He emphasized the word 'unavailable'. "After we had progressed to a level of comfort in the science we began using it in the warp engines of our ships. Accidents followed which I can't elaborate on but at this point we have built upon decades of experience in working with this technology and it is essentially now no more dangerous than a nuclear power generation unit... and far less polluting." He gave a slight smile toward Shayhiloosh. "Other factors to consider is that the artificially created phenomenon is essentially unstable and without constant maintenance would break down and dissipate, also the mass of the singularity is a limiting factor, supermassive black holes for instance would be completely unmanageable but one of this size is entirely controllable. Do you know what the singularity within a black hole looks like?" (Reply: Shayhiloosh) "Of course not." Xerius nodded. "The black hole itself is not the singularity which is the fundamental region of infinite mass and infinite gravity that forms the event horizon, the area within the event horizon is referred to as a black hole because nothing can be percieved within it owing to the gravitation pull which will not allow even light to escape and in the case of interstellar phenomena is of titanic size, here however we are working with a singularity far less massive with an event horizon of only 1.3 meters in diameter. You can see from that then the relative weakness of it. There is no need to be concerned, the possibility of such a one breaking containment and continuing its existence much less growing to consume the planet is infintesimal, you are more likely to die of starvation within a ripe vegetable field than to witness such a catastrophe." (Posted by Charles) ===================================================================== (Romulus - Institute of Advanced Scientific Studies, Singularity Lab – ACSO Ensign Shayhiloosh - 0949) "Why do we have singularity power generation on our homeworld?" Xerius began to pace a little as he spoke. "Obviously the science has progressed to the point where we are confident in our control of it. The initial experiments were carried out on remote planetoids for safety's sake and the details of any failures of such are unfortunately unavailable." Shayhiloosh noted the Prefect emphasized the word 'unavailable'. "After we had progressed to a level of comfort in the science, we began using it in the warp engines of our ships. Do you know what the singularity within a black hole looks like?" "Equipment or personnel sent into the event horizon to get close enough to take readings of the singularity do not survive well. Any signals they might send out are swallowed up and unable to escape the event horizon," answered Shayhiloosh. Many of these basics premises were taught in their nursery groves on Arboria Prime. Some of these were lessons s/he had taught hirself to their younglings. "Of course not," Xerius nodded. "The black hole itself is not the singularity which is the fundamental region of infinite mass and infinite gravity that forms the event horizon. The area within the event horizon is referred to as a black hole because nothing can be perceived within it owing to the gravitational pull which will not allow even light to escape and in the case of interstellar phenomena is of titanic size. Here, however, we are working with a singularity far less massive with an event horizon of only 1.3 meters in diameter. You can see from that then the relative weakness of it. You are more likely to die of starvation within a ripe vegetable field than to witness such a catastrophe." Shayhiloosh nodded an eyestalk in comprehension. "So the power it takes to maintain the singularity must be much less that the energy it exudes, else it would not be feasible to maintain the singularity in the first place," deduced Shayhiloosh logically. "Does it provide power for this Institute?" (Posted by Sheila) ===================================================================== (Romulus - Institute of Advanced Scientific Studies, Singularity Lab – CSO Lt Ardena Carrow - 0949.5) Ardena was more than happy to lurk at the back of the pack and let the enthusiastic members of the team ask the questions. The further away she was from the prefect, the less likely it was she'd turf on his boots. Unfortunately, leaning against the walls seemed to make her head spin too. She was with Shayhiloosh when it came to running singularities in populated places, but then, maybe the early humans had felt the same way about fission and then fusion. If the Romulans trusted their children to learn in an academy with the labs, then she trusted they probably weren't going to kill them all in the next couple of hours. She had been very happy to see Harry and Shayhiloosh ramp up interest and curiosity and forget the prejudice of the being providing the information and started to treat him like a walking encyclopedia. She could have sworn she saw respect strike through his eyes a few times as the discussion wound up and on. If they managed to break through the bigotry of one Romulan today, she'd be a very happy woman.
