There were many tall buildings that provided shade and respite from the direct heat of the sun. There was no respite from the arid atmosphere that sucked the liquid from the body. Even if one was used to the Vulcan climate, unless you are prepared to be outside for extended times it can be … uncomfortable. And that was where the observer was at. He was feeling uncomfortable. Not that what he was doing was not uncomfortable enough. He had watched as the crew from the Illuminar had arrived, and he had followed them to the Nivar Institute. He had studied each of the crew with a discerning eye, making observations and mental notes. He noted the clothing, the build, and even the baggage of each of the people. Looking at the configuration of the group it was clear that they had entered the Institute with the Vulcan woman as the main concern. She was in the center of the group, and attention seemed to being paid to her. Seeing her created an odd tension in the observer. Once they entered the building he could feel the tension release and he leaned against the wall which shaded him. Now he knew where they were. It was a matter of how log they would stay. It was time to slake his thirst and he made his way to an establishment that could serve this purpose. He should be able to watch the exit of the building from that location. But that is more common amongst Vulcans or perhaps more open in today’s times. I am here for T’Mur. I am not here to change a culture, but ….” She glanced over at the patient then returned her attention to Felicity. “What do we need to do?’ Felicity went dead calm, there would be no more raging at the healers manner, she planned on doing something about it. "We are going to gather all of the evidence we can muster in an attempt to start up an investigation. I feel that this patient has had her right to treatment violated. It might go nowhere but then again maybe we can push back against an injustice and begin a change. Earth went through a similar social stigma, once treating the victims of rape as though they were at fault. Vulcans think of their culture as advanced beyond others, but to think that they still hold on to such cruel behavior, treating the victims of physical and mental brutality as pariahs and outcasts is horrendous." Dr. Tate took a calming breath. "If I can do anything to shine the light on it and stop it I will." The orchids were next on the list of judging. She made her way to a line of beautiful pink orchids. She would like to pick a bunch of these for her office but knew that wasn't possible. She bent down to smell the sweet smelling flower and found the aroma most pleasant . She walked over to the middle one in the row and placed a fake blue ribbon on that flower. If anyone would look upon her doing this, she didn't care. She sensed noone around. Even if there was someone around, she suspected no one would bother her. Drinks had been offered in order to make them more comfortable. Offering water on Vulcan was standard fare even for the natives. Especially important though for offworlders like herself and Doctor Solice. The climate was dry to the extreme and the general lack of moisture in the air siphoned water from a body in an unnoticeable way. Desert air on Earth was the same way, the drier air didn't seem as hot since humidity drove up the heat index because it dampened the body's cooling system. The purpose of perspiration was to cause a cooling effect as moisture on the skin was absorbed by the air. Humid air didn't absorb moisture readily and the sweat pooled on the skin, dampened clothes and added to the discomfort and the oppressive atmosphere causing heat sickness. Dry desert air on the other hand wicked perspiration away quickly, one might even think they weren't perspiring at all and they didn't notice the heat as much because the natural cooling system was working efficiently. Not so much in the sun where the beating down of its solar radiation could get stifling and quickly drive up the internal temperature causing heat exhaustion, heat stroke or death. But even relaxing in the shade in such an environment one could quickly get dehydrated. And Vulcan was a desert on steroids due to its higher atmospheric temperature kindled by being in a trinary system. So staying continually hydrated in such an environment was nearly impossible. Vulcans were much more acclimated, their bodies highly efficient in regulating their internal temperature and they inbibed water on a regular basis as a matter of course in order to stay hydrated. Humans, even one like Felicity who had spent years on the planet much less one newly arrived had to keep the fluid near at hand at all times and drink almost constantly. Air conditioning helped with internal temperature but to the surprise of many it was also guilty of causing dehydration since one of the functions of AC was to dry the air. Cold air holds very little moisture while hot air can hold quite a lot so cooling the air down also drives down the humidity. The end result is that a human on Vulcan even constantly within the confines of an air conditioned building is constantly on the edge of being dangerously dehydrated. Felicity took a long swallow before beginning then set the cup aside. "The only way I know to begin this Ms. T'Mur is by asking questions. I have some concerns about the course of your treatment and I'm hoping you can provide me with some answers or at least clues that will lead me to the answers. (Reply Penny iyw) (Posted by Edward) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> (Vulcan - ShiKahr- Nivar Institute-Director’s Office- CTO Ensign T’Mur – 1546) The wait for the two doctors to finish their conversation had allowed T’Mur enough time to center herself and bring her body back into alignment with her mind. There was a quick walk to the director’s office. The continuous hum of the air conditioner buzzed in her ears, reminding her of a time that seemed so long ago now. Doctor Tate sat behind her desk and offered a seat to T’Mur and Solice. T’Mur sat down taking the glass of water offered. She looked into the water as if contemplating the secrets that it held. Then she raised the glass to her lips and too a long sip. "The only way I know to begin this Ms. T'Mur is by asking questions,” Tate said breaking the moment. "I have some concerns about the course of your treatment and I'm hoping you can provide me with some answers or at least clues that will lead me to the answers. Can you tell me about the healer who was treating your case? I don't mean physical characteristics or anything but his manner, the questions he asked and any insight you might have on him.” T’Mur continued to look deeply into the water. She knew that this was possibly going to be the question asked. How could she tell them. After all, she got the treatment she deserved, did she not? Then she looked over at Quinna, who continued to look worried. How much did she really want to reveal. That was, of course, an emotional response. Logic would dictate that she inform both doctors to benefit from their mutual treatment. She took a deep breath, opened her eyes and looked up. “The doctors who treated me after the attack gave me adequate initial first aid treatment. That is, they cleaned my wounds and … well, cleaned me up. However, I will say that there was very little done to address the…,” she looked over at Quinna, a guilt welled up inside her, “the rape. My parents felt that it would be most logical if we could put it behind us and definitely not bring it up in polite society. Nor even within ourselves. Hearing everything made Quinna feel a bit guilty even if all this happened before Quinna and T’Mur met. As much as Quinna wanted to know more along the lines of the questioning , T'Mur was visibly shaken by the conversation. “Ok, I think that is enough for the day.” Quinna interrupted, “It has been a very long day and it is time to rest. “Quinna spoke directly to Dr. Tate. “There is nothing you need to know today that cannot be asked tomorrow.” (Reply, T’Mur, Tate) (played by Kris) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> (Vulcan - ShiKahr- Nivar Institute-Director’s Office- Dr. Felicity Tate -- 1600) “Is that the information that you were seeking?” T'Mur inquired. Felicity had been listening closely with growing horror. The Vulcan female's voice, her manner and revulsion all added up to one inescapable conclusion. She was about to open her mouth when Dr. Solice cut her off. “Ok, I think that is enough for the day. It has been a very long day and it is time to rest. There is nothing you need to know today that cannot be asked tomorrow.” Felicity turned her head to the Doctor and nodded. "I agree. Thank you for being here." She then turned her attention back to the patient. "The treatment suite will be ready by 9 am. I will see you tomorrow. Thank you for being patient with me and I apologize for dredging up the past." She watched the two women leave and waited until the door had shut behind them before leaning on the desktop and burying her head in her hands. No crusades to right a long standing injustice would begin here. The woman who had come had been traumatized not only by the experience but by its following stigma. She carried the guilt of countless victims before her like a scarlet letter. Felicity was not a counselor and what T'Mur needed desperately she could not give her. She could heal her body yes but not her soul, her Katra. Tears leaked from the corners of her eyes as she considered what she had heard. The cover-up had begun at the Vulcans parents and the Healer had been complicit. In doing so perhaps he had thought in his own logical fashion that he was sparing her further pain. Or perhaps it had been a cold-blooded business decision. In the end he had followed the wishes of the parents of a very scared and shattered girl. Her communication with him now took on a different tone. Maybe he had simply been continuing their wishes. In the end though he had attempted to lay the blame on this woman. And she hated him for it. Hated that such an outwardly enlightened culture should contain such rot, so much pain for someone who had been brutally treated. And that they would continue to do so long after the crime. She allowed the tears to flow freely as she sobbed. She had never seen such emotional pain before and it devastated her. And Felicity had brought it to the surface. She felt soiled, stained by her action. She was not at fault, she knew that. She had simply been trying to help but at this moment it didn't matter. The comm buzzed but she ignored it. She couldn't talk right now, not when she was like this but she needed to pull herself together. The staff would become concerned and come to check on her and she couldn't be seen in this state. And so it was a few minutes later when one of the healers came through the door her face was dry and she was on the terminal checking on the scans taken of T'Mur. She kept her face averted and on the screen so that he couldn't see her reddened eyes. The healing of the body would begin tomorrow. But when oh when would the scars on her psyche ever be removed? Reea continued looking, but after a few more moments, she tossed her hands in the air. "Sorry, I still don't." T'Lov let out a short sigh. Reea was looking at a rock garden. It was about ten feet square and filled with rocks of all shapes, sizes, colors, and kinds. There were round and smooth, flat and sharp, and oddly-shaped ones. Growing through the rocks were plants, mostly scrub and a type of cactus, flora one would commonly see in a desert. According to T'Lov, there was a logical order to it that projected peace, but Reea wasn't getting it. "You are being illogical. I experienced the fullness of this when I was age five," said T'Lov. Wonderful, thought Reea. A five-year-old gets it and I don't. "I'm sure if I spent more time studying it, I would understand." "Would you like for me to explain?" said T'Lov. A slurpy, rattling that began as a quiet vibration, growing to a sound like pebbles falling on a hard service, interrupted the discussion. Reea and T'Lov turned their heads in unison to see Shola finishing a drink through a straw. The Andorian girl stopped, her eyes looking upwards at the others. "What?" Reea laughed. "It's hot and I'm from an ice world," said Shola. "Besides, I like grelberry juice." "It is important to stay hydrated," said T'Lov. She looked at Reea. "Should we return to our conversation?" "Sure. Why not?" said Reea reluctantly. "The first thing you must realize, is there are...." T'Lov was interrupted by the sound of something crashing to the ground. Looking at Shola again, Reea gasped. The girl was lying on the walkway. She was convulsing and gasping for air. "Shola!" said T'Lov, emotion and concern in her voice. Reea rushed to the Andorian, cradling her head so it wouldn't bounce off the hard pavement. Grabbing her medical tricorder, she did a scan.... (reply none) (posted by Renee Bishop) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> (Vulcan - Botanical Gardens - Counselor Ensign jg Reea - 1629) "Shola! What's wrong with her?" T'Lov was getting more frantic by the second. "She has a tiny puncture wound in the back of her left shoulder," said Reea, reading from her medical tricorder. "She's having some sort of reaction." "Do something!" shouted T'Lov. "Her airway is beginning to swell. She's in anaphylactic shock." For a brief moment, Reea felt like she wanted to run and find someone to help, but she realized they were off by themselves. Shola could die and it was on Reea to save her. She moved her hand to her right hip. Reea swore in her native tongue. She hadn't brought her medical kit. She reached to tap her comm badge, but it wasn't there. Pounding her thighs with her fists, she swore again. Panic began to well up inside her. If she didn't think of something now, it would be too late. "T'Lov, go find help." "What?" T'Lov seemed like she was somewhere else. Reea smacked the Vulcan girl on the arm. "Go find help!" T'Lov blinked. "Find help. Yes." She got up and ran off. Reea needed to help Shola breath. That was the first priority. Her mind racing, Reea saw the cup Shola was drinking from. The straw reminded her of something old she had been taught in her medic classes at the academy. She needed something sharp. The rock garden. Reea's adrenaline was pouring through her, so the next moments were a fog. She found herself kneeling next to Shola, holding the straw and a sharp rock. Reea knew what she had to do, but she was gripped by fear. She had done this procedure in holo simulations, but never for real. "Stop taking so long," said Reea in an angry whisper. Probing Shola's neck, Reea found the thyroid cartilage and moved her finger just below it. Taking a deep breath, she used the rock to make a vertical incision. It was jagged and bled more than she would have liked, but it was the best she could do under the circumstances. Starting the emergency tracheotomy caused Reea to click into medical mode. Her nervousness was gone. The conditions were nowhere near ideal, and there was a serious risk of the dirty rock causing an infection, but by the Blessed Exchequer, she was going to save this girl. (reply any) (posted by Renee Bishop) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> (Vulcan - Botanical Gardens - ACOUNS ACMO LT JG Ariel Trei - 16.31) While looking at the orchids, she was alerted by a frantic 12 year old girl urging her to save her friend. There was no time to waste so she followed the girl to another girl lying on the ground being attended by Reea. By the looks of the situation the lying girl was in anaphylactic shock. Reea performed a tracheotomy that was well done as far as Ariel could see. She could feel the intense anxiety and fear from the girl's friend. She could also feel the intense need for Ariel to save her friend. She didn't have time to verbally say that she will do all she can to save her friend. She pulled out a epinephrine( epi pen) from her purse and jammed it into the lying girls right thigh. She scanned the girl called Shola to see if the Epi Pen was doing its job. The Epi Pen was not enough until it was learned what caused the allergic reaction but it would have to be for now. She tried to calm down Shola's friend called T'Lov and give her instructions to help her save Shola. She had several tablets in her purse to create a breathing treatment mist for this situation. She needed two pools of water on each side of the patient to be effective. She instructed T'Lov to dig small holes on each side of Shola and fill them with water. She then dropped 2 tablets in each of the pools. A mist began cover Shola. "This should help her breathe until we determine was caused the allergic reaction. Great job Reea. Do you have any idea what caused the allergic reaction?" She recalled one time at cheerleader camp when a girl was bit by a bee and went into anaphylactic shock. She recalled how anxious and fearful for the girl she was. Thankfully the girl was treated quickly and recovered fast enough to return to camp activities the next day. She hoped the same for Shola. Great job, Reea. Do you have any idea what caused the allergic reaction?" said Ariel. "She has a pinprick in the back of her left shoulder," said Reea. "I believe it was an insect bite." Reea was thankful Ariel had come. Shola was as close to stable as they could make her, but she still needed medical care. T'Lov running for help had drawn attention; Reea could see several Vulcan adults quickly approaching. "How may we assist you?" said a Vulcan man. Reea wasn't certain, but she thought she saw an instant of a surprised reaction at seeing a Ferengi. "We need to get to a hospital." said Reea. The man turned to one of the others and gave a quick order. Reea had a universal translator implanted in her left ear, a common Ferengi practice, so she understood what he said. "How long until the orbital transporter platform will beam us to the hospital?" said Reea. "Soon." "She doesn't have soon!" said Reea. She was both frustrated and irritated. "You must be patient." Before Reea could fire off a retort, she felt the tingle of a transporter beam. Quickly looking at the others, she saw Ariel and T'Lov were going as well. Finally! >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> (Vulcan - Hospital ER - Counselor Ensign jg Reea - 1636) Reea, Shola, Ariel, and T'Lov appeared in the emergency area of a local hospital. The Vulcan in the botanical gardens must have told them what happened, as a trauma team was waiting for them. One of the medical personnel hurried over and scooped up Shola in her arms, taking her to a biobed. Reea followed. "The patient has an insect bite on the back of her left shoulder. She had an allergic reaction that caused anaphylaxis. I didn't have medical equipment, so I performed an emergency tracheotomy." She handed her medical tricorder to the nurse. "Her vitals are here." "Thank you. You may wait there," said a nurse, pointing to chairs down a short corridor. "But I want to see what's happening," said Reea. "We will care for her. Please wait there. We will inform you of her status when we know more." "What about contacting Shola's family?" "We are doing that now. Please wait there." Reea sighed in exasperation. "Vulcans," she muttered. Reea joined Ariel and T'Lov. "They want us to wait there. Thanks again for helping, Ariel. I'm glad you came." (reply Ariel, any) (posted by Renee Bishop) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> (Vulcan - Hospital ER - Counselor Ensign jg Reea - 1702) While the doctors were working on Shola, Reea paced the corridor. She had been shown a place to wait, but she was so worried, she couldn't sit. She had tried several times to sneak into the ER, but someone always saw her and sent her back. Feeling she had waited long enough, Reea quietly moved back through the hallway. Peeking around the corner, she was surprised to see only a nurse tending to Shola. One of the doctors was walking towards her. "You are the person that helped the Andorian girl?" "Yes. I'm Reea, one of the counselors on the Illuminar." The doctor raised one of his eyebrows. "A Ferengi counselor? Fascinating." Reea harrumphed. "I am Doctor Torvek. The girl is going to recover." "Her name is Shola." "Yes." There were a few seconds of silence. "Can you tell me what happened?" said Reea. "Normally confidentiality would not permit me to tell you, but since you gave her emergency care, I believe it will be acceptable." Get to it already! She wanted to grab the man and shake him. "Shola was bitten by a starfly. They are not venomous and Andorians are not allergic to them, so this is an unusual circumstance. The logical conclusion is, that this was simply a rare and unfortunate incident." Reea sighed with relief, a smile on her face. Before she could say anything, a loud commotion came from Shola's biobed. A nurse was escorting an Andorian woman into the room. Reea and Torvek watched as the woman, presumably Shola's mother, held her daughter, tears flowing. Reea had never seen an Andorian cry. Actually, she had seen only a handful of them in her life. As long as things turned out well, that's all that mattered. "In the twenty-seven years I have practiced medicine, I have never seen anyone perform a tracheotomy. I congratulate you for thinking of it. However, I recommend you practice, as your technique was less than ideal." Reea wasn't angry at Torvek's comment. She wasn't exasperated. She just laughed. "I will," said Reea. "Thank you, Doctor." Shaking her head and smiling again, Reea headed back down the hall to tell T'Lov her friend was going to be fine. She made care not to wake her when she rose to get ready for her day. Her finger tips ran over her own lips as she recalled the pressure of Sienna’s lips on them. She was suddenly enveloped by a wave of happiness, that was quickly followed by the ebb of self loathing. How could she have been so careless and selfish. She now worried as to whether she had passed her own affliction upon this woman who had done nothing more than show her kindness and love. Now she might be infected. That’s how Pa’Nar worked. It was passed from one being to another, as if it were some virus. T’Mur had allowed the moment of fulfillment to overwhelm her personal judgement. She had never, intentionally, allowed another to touch her mind, knowing the consequences. Now she had subjected another, someone that she cared about, to be subject to the same humiliation and censure that she had experience for so many years. If nothing else, last night showed the importance of this treatment. For the very least, to protect Sienna from the hazards of this syndrome. An emotional response? A logical choice made because of a 0.1 % necessary emotional connection. T’Mur dressed in a light and loose fitting outfit in recognition of the work and time that she had ahead of her. She would need to be comfortable. Well, as comfortable as she could be. There was only so much she had control of. Once dressed she stood at the doorway and took one more look back at the woman in her bed. She so wanted to wake her and hold her tightly, searching for a last touch of care before her ordeal. Instead, she took a deep breath and stepped out of the suite to meet with Captain Sekal in the lobby. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> (Vulcan - ShiKahr- Nivar Institute-Foyer- CTO Ensign T'Mur — 0900) The entourage for this morning had been much smaller than had accompanied her the previous day. Today it was simply Captain Sekal and his shadow, Petty Officer Hammond, who seemed determined to never let the captain go anywhere unaccompanied, and Dr. Solice. Quinn’s looked said volumes about her feelings. Unfortunately it did not fill T’Mur with the confidence that she was certain the doctor had intended. They were met at the entrance of the building by one of Dr. Tate’s assistants and quickly whisked through the registration process with a palm print from T’Muir and then wicked up to the treatment rooms. Within five minutes T’Mur was laying on a bed waiting to start. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> (Vulcan - ShiKahr- Nivar Institute-Neural Treatment Suite 2- CTO Ensign T'Mur — 0907) T'Mur lay on her back on the table. She had never felt so vulnerable in her life. She wondered if that was how it felt to be subject of experimental procedures. It was not a logical sensation, but it existed none the less. She laced her fingers across her chest and closed her eyes, breathing to ease her tension. T’Mur had been grateful that the process of preparation required er to NOT answer any further questions. She did know, though, that even after this, and her body was healed, that there was still work to be done. "Just relax,” Tate offered, "you are going to be here for the next 13 days but it won't seem like it. You will go to sleep and when you wake up you will be a new woman." T’Mur opened her eyes and looked at the doctor. Deep in the recesses of her eyes she could almost hear her thoughts and concerns. “That,” she replied, “might be my biggest concern. Who will I be after." "The side effect I noted before is very simple and not dangerous. The neural regeneration rolls back the clock for a patient but is more noticeable in the aged. Those who are old have regained 30 years or more of their youth while the young are hardly changed at all. You are young enough that you will barely notice a difference. It doesn't affect one temporally. A person isn't changed from an adult to a youth or a child, it merely rejuvenates the one who goes under it." T’Mur nodded, “That is a relief, as my childhood is not a time I would prefer to repeat. I have read about the process, but to experience it will be… unique.” Tate went on to explain the process and the time frame. Six of the thirteen days would be the mechanism taking over and releasing control of her involuntary functions. The other seven days will be the treatment. Being in stasis for 13 days is far from a record, but it was 13 more days of stasis than she had experienced before. “I wonder,” T’Mur said, not really expecting an answer, “if my brain functions will remain constant. Will I remember any of the treatment, or even dream?” (reply Tate, if you want) Tate came up to the table and put a gentle hand on T’Mur’s shoulder. She smiled kindly, which was followed by a sharp sting of the injection. She stepped away, out of sight. There was a slight hum as the probes descended into place. That was soon replaced by a higher pithed hum. The last words she heard were from Tate saying, “Almost there." She closed her eyes and could feel the table retract. She had meant to open her eyes one more time, more out of curiosity, but found that they would not open. There was a momentary feeling of constriction, and then … . T’Mur was no longer conscious of what was happening around her. Her last thought was a line she had learned from an old Earth book. ~In for a penny…~ (reply Solice, Tate, Sekal) (posted by Al Muir) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> (Vulcan - ShiKahr- Nivar Institute-Neural Treatment Suite 2- Dr. Felicity Tate -- 0905) T'Mur was in loose fitting pants and a blouse rather than the diaphanous gown she had worn during the exam. She was lying on her back on a tabletop in the center of the room. The table was anchored to a single central pillar that jutted from the floor. It was surrounded by a recess the length, width and thickness of the table. Once the treatment had begun the table would be withdrawn and merge seamlessly into the floor. A control panel for the equipment was at the far end of the room. Felicity had been clinical and detached, not wanting to cause the woman further discomfort. There had been no questions. She would do her job and let the young woman depart with some semblance of dignity. "Just relax, you are going to be here for the next 13 days but it won't seem like it. You will go to sleep and when you wake up you will be a new woman." (Reply: T'Mur) "The side effect I noted before is very simple and not dangerous. (Reply: T'Mur) "The mechanism will take over your involuntary functions such as repiratory and vascular to keep your body functioning. The process takes 3 days. This hasn't changed since it was first designed. It has to take over slowly so your system won't be thrown into shock. The actual treatment will take 7 days but we can't bring you out of it instantly or the shock to your system would be fatal. There will be another 3 days to return control of your involuntary systems back to you. You will be in stasis during the entire process. Ready?" Small disks like synaptic stabilizers had been attached to her temples. Their only function was to monitor the patient during the entire process. (Reply: T'Mur) Felicity gave her an injection that would stimulate the production of the stem cells that would speed up the process of regeneration. This breakthrough had brought the original timeline down from 30 days to half that and sometimes less. A second injection was the sedative that put her to sleep. Having done that she moved to the panel and initiated the sequence. Two thick probes descended from the ceiling until they were level with the table and less than 2 inches from the head and foot of it. She then activated the machinery. Doctor Solice was standing nearby watching the procedure. A rising hum from the probes indicated they were powering up. "Almost there." Several lights on the panel turned green and Felicity keyed in the code that initiated the protocol. Two technicians and a healer walked in on cue and took up position nearby. There was a wait of 2 minutes before the table retracted back into the floor leaving T'Mur suspended in the air between the two probes. Felicity gave the panel a last look. The transfer had begun and was stable. She stepped away and a tech took her place, the entire transference would be monitored round the clock. She then walked over to Quinna. "Any questions doctor?" (Reply: Quinna) (Posted by Charles G) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> (Vulcan - ShiKahr- Nivar Institute-Neural Treatment Suite 2- Dr. Felicity Tate — 0912) “Is she feeling the effects. Will she achieve a Rem Sleep. I have to admit, I did read about the procedure, but this extent was not in my readings.” Felicity shook her head at the first question. "Initial and all subsequent studies have shown that the patient while sedated is quite unaware of what is happening. Her mind will sleep and dream during the procedure as normal. Her brain is not being shut down but the processes it controls are being taken over so that her neural network can be rebuilt." “So where will I be staying? I do not feel comfortable leaving T’Mur here alone.” Felicity smiled. "As her attending physician you have some perks. Come with me." She led the way out of the treatment suite and passed the Captain who was standing at the viewing window looking in. He turned his head to look at her as she did so. "I presume from the efficiency of the process that all is in order." "Quite so Captain. You will have your officer back in 13 days. Feel free to stop by and check on her whenever you like." He nodded and turned back to the window with hands cupped at the small of his back as the women passed him. Felicity led the Doctor to the third door down the hall to the right and passed through it. Inside was a plush couch, a desk with monitor and chair and a replicator to the right of the desk. "Lights on." The chamber was lit showing the spartan space that had very little beside the aforementioned items and a small table beside the couch. Felicity walked to the desk and keyed on the monitor then inputted her codes and accessed the data for treatment suite 2. "As you can see while in this office you can monitor her vital signs continuously. The graphic in the upper right hand corner is showing the time to the end of process. Currently it is setting up the transference of the involuntary functions which will be ready in another 8 minutes. Feel free to use this spare office as much as you like. So, sitting on the command chair, he was busy catching up on work. Reviewing the final reports for what was done support the Sharlayan. Gregory looked at the young man. “First cruise Crewman?” he asked. “Yes… Yes Sir.” He replied. “It’ll get better. Once you get used to the hustle and bustle. However, I can’t find any of them, Sir.” Gregory chucked to himself. A little hazing of the new kid on the crew. “Very good Crewman. Please report to CPO Ywan, with my complements and ask her to show you where they are.” Beaumont snapped to attention, dropping the PADD in the process. “Aye, Aye sir,” he said. “Don’t forget the PADD, crewman, its not like they grow on tree’s.” Gregory watched the nervous young man take his leave. (Posted by Kris B) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> (Xen’Tal - Vulcan Institute of Defensive Arts - Security PO3 Hercules Devers and Jardek - 1330) Turning Devers faced the second Vulcan. “I am Jardek,” the Vulcan offered and held out a hand. “You have great skill, for a human. We have an unfair advantage. We are faster, and stronger than you can be. With that in mind, I will give you 80%.” Devers took the Vulcan’s hand. “I look forward to our bout,” he replied. With that Jardek stepped back, and bowed. His clothes were similar to Teluk’s, but he wore a sash that was purple around his waist. He stepped back into a fighting stance and prepared himself for the human’s attack. V’yless ran into the ring and handed Devers a flask of water. He leaned close and spoke softly. “Are you familiar with the differences between ponn-ifla and kareel-ifla? As you noticed, ponn-ifla takes the opponent's strengths and turns it against them. To its logical conclusion, there is no way to harm a practitioner of ponn-ifla, especially one as practiced as Teluk, by attacking. The only true win is to not fight. However, kareel-ifla was developed in a time when logic was not the basis of our society, and brute force was a way to defeat your opponent. It might be a form that is more familiar to your style. It applies direct force to end a conflict as quickly as possible.” Devers took the offered flask and drew deeply from it. “Thank you. This is why I am here, to learn, to observe and to test. As my Kru has taught me to learn where I can. To train with the best.” Handing the flask back to V’yless, “Thank you.” Turning to face Jardek, Devers got into his fighting stance. Jardeck had not moved while he waited for the human to regain his composure. Jardek nodded to Devers, “You may begin when you are adequately recovered.” Devers nodded, “You are most fair. I am ready.” Eyeing his opponent, advanced slowly, starting with a conventional punch combination to gauge distances and test Jardek’s reactions. Leading off with a Mat Neung (jab) combination, short fast punches. The key to this fight, which based on what he knew and confirmed by V’yless, would play into his wheelhouse better. Using punches and elbow strikes to set up a devastating kick attack. Jardel easily slipped the jabs, knowing that this was a test from Devers. He rolled under the third punch and took a drop step to the right, threw a driving hook into his ribs, turned to face his opponent then finished his combination with a cross to his exposed jaw. ~Game on!~ Devers thought to himself as Jardel landed a good cross. Using the momentum he gained from the hook, he pulled his hand up and struck Jardek with a sok tat, the horizontal elbow strike. A good counter, but not as much power as he could generate if he had a full lead in. However he used the momentum to spin around, attempting a spinning mat wiang klap, the backfist strike, one of his favorite combinations that often surprised his opponents as it was a hard move to master. Devers' flexibility and gymnastics helped him. Jardek absorbed the shock of the elbow strike then ducked under the spinning fist coming towards him. He shot back with an uppercut, followed by a right hook. These were distraction moves as he switched stance and threw a stinging inside leg kick that landed squarely at the middle of Devers left leg. He stepped back to avoid any counter that might follow. Devers leg absorbed the blow, buckling slightly. Devers took the momentum to the mat, and rolled away from Jardek. Arching his back, he sprung back to his feet. “Good hit,” he said as he resumed his fighting stance. Jardek nodded in acknowledgement of the compliment. In his own opinion it was not a good strike or a bad strike. It was simply the strike he had intended. He knew that Devers was not really giving him his best showing. It was all too routine. He wanted to see what the human was truly capable of doing. He stepped out of his stance for a moment. “If you would do me the honor,” Jardek said, “do not hold back. Show me your best.” Then he stepped back into his fight stance, bringing his hands down slightly. Devers understood what Jardek meant. The opening round was just to get an idea and judge his opponents reaction time. Jardek was not kidding about the Vulcan speed. He felt they were matched in strength, and Devers might have a bit of edge in flexibility, but he had to watch the fast reactions and counters. He bounced up and down as he slowly circled his options in his mind. If he could get Jardek in a clinch, he could take him to the ground and launch a series of knee strikes. Jardek held his ground watching as Devers moved carefully around him. He waited patiently for the right moment. When the human had arrived at 120 degrees Jardek whipped his left leg around at his face, spun on the balls of his feet then sent his right leg into an outside leg kick directed at the sciatic nerve at the midpoint between his hip and knee. Devers watched as Jardek aimed a kick to his face, he threw a muay thai buok, the shin block, in combination with an arm block to catch the kick. That opened him up and the Vulcan’s right leg kick landed cleanly. Devers grimaced with the pain of the blow to his nerve. Relying on his gymnastic training, he was able to roll to his side into an aerial cartwheel, sticking the landing. Using his momentum, he lept into a khao yoa, a powerful knee strike aimed at Jardek’s chest. Jardek brought his hands down to catch the knee before it penetrated deep enough to do any serious damage and then threw both fists to Dever’s chest connecting with his promised 80% power. He was strong, even for a human, but his human body would not hold up long under the small Vulcan’s full power. He stepped forward, lifted his arms to protect his head but exposed his ribs. He nodded at Devers. This was now a test of the human’s endurance. With his sides completely open he said, “Proceed.” Then he slapped his flanks. Devers nodded, and moved in, swinging his arms out to the side of Jardek’s hands. With a quick move, he brought his hands close together behind the Vuclan’s neck, partially pinning his hands to his side, executing the muay thai djab ko, a full clinch. If he could hold it, it was a devastating position to have your opponent in. He started using his knee strikes, the khao khong, driving his right knee into Jardek’s side landing two and then a third blow. Pressing his advantage, he tried to drive Jardek’s right side with a khao chiang, a diagonal knee strike. Jardek breathed at each strike of Devers' knees, tightening his muscles around the bones of his ribs to keep them from breaking. Then he slowly reached his right hand inside of the clinch and wedged it slightly apart. But only enough for himself to reach through and grab the back of Devers’ neck. His left hand reached over so they were now in a 50/50 clinch. Then, directly after Devers knee struck his flank he shot his own knee strike back onto the human. They went back and forth in this cycle for six strikes each. Devers would strike, Jardek would counter. Suddenly Jardek changed the pattern and struck twice in a row with left knee, pulling Devers down into the strike. He released the human at the tail end of the strike to watch his shoot back away from the assault. He looked down to see the green welt already forming across his midsection and nodded. He was certain that he heard a small crack from the human’s bones but the man still stood there, ready to continue the battle. Jardek stepped out of his fight stance and bowed his head towards Devers. “I believe that will be adequate.” Devers stepped back as well. He was sure his ribs were cracked again. The Doctor, well, he’d be due for another lecture about violence and such. He put his hands together, raised up to his eyebrows and bowed low, showing respect by executing the Wai. As he stood up, he saw Jekkos walk into the ring, between the two combatants. Devers pivoted to the side, and again bowed low to the master of the VIDA. “We have seen today,” Jekkos said, “The skills of three masters in their field. Meditate on what you have seen, and what lessons you can take from them to improve your skills.” Jekkos turned to Devers, “You fought well and with honor. You are welcome back anytime you wish Mr. Hercules Devers.” He placed his hand up in the Vulcan Salute, “Live long and prosper.” Devers nodded, and returned the salute. “My mate will be most displeased if I do not bring you back to her so that she can heal those wounds. You as well Jardek.” Jardek nodded stoically, as they walked off the mat. “You hit hard.” (Reply None) (Posted by Al and Tim) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> (Illuminar - Deck 14 Armoury Chief of Security Lt jg Keung Lee- 1900) The Armoury was fairly busy with PO3 Carol Linnis and her helpers undertaking their duties. Now the two were standing in front of the door. She punched in her access code and the door opened. They stepped inside and Carol gave Pevin a moment to take in the vast area and array of different weapons displayed before them. Woah. Now that's a lot of automatic weaponry! He thought. The sound was boisterous. "Anyone who wishes to use a weapon on the range needs approval from you and you both has to sign out the weapon and return it to the Armoury when finished." ” Very good, " he acknowledged. "I do have a question however, what about away teams, are they treated differently?" "Absolutely not." Carol smile smiled. He parried the follow-up stroke which almost threw Lee’s balance, as the Klingon advanced remorselessly on him. Lee ducked and twisted as he backed away, waiting for his is opening, avoiding a direct confrontation where his strength would be no match for the Klingon. The Klingon was taller and stronger, but Lee had the better reflexes and manoeuvrability. Lee’s face was an mask of calm, and only those who knew where to look could see the concentration in his eyes. Then he saw his opening as Koir dropped his left flank for the briefest time. He darted forward, looking to get close and under his reach, scissoring his legs in a sweeping arc to throw Lee off his feet. There was a gasp from the watching cadets. It was therefore all the more surprising – Lee was not sure how, when he looked back on this later - he suddenly found herself airborne, before the gymnasium mat rushed upwards to meet his chin, culminating in crash. he tasted blood. Keung Lee was going to delivered that training to one of the cadets - Jane Walker. He decided it was going to be a one to one as he sensed it would to building up confidence in the individual and he wanted to avoid any sense of competitive pressure. Jane entered the firing range eager to test the two non energy hand pistols that the Chief had selected for her. The first was the Walther P99. She had only see this weapon used before and that was in a classical film used by a fictional character called James . Tig liked the feeling of this gun in her hand, it carried 9x19mm shells and what she had read about the weapon it appeared the pronunciation of the weapon had under gone several nuances. ('Walther' is properly pronounced 'Valter' but, due to years of Anglicisation, notably in the James Bond films, 'Wolta' and 'Woltha' are regularly heard.) "Hello Chief " said Jane who was carrying a Walter P99 in one hand and the other a Micro- Uzi, “Greetings. Cadet. Perhap you'd like to place your weapons on the table there.” He said pointing. Jane placed the two weapons on the table. “You realise that using such weapons is completely different from firing phasers.” Jane was somewhat surprised, but knew the Chief did know more about these weapons than she did. “Right. Let’s begin, shall we” said Keung. He picked up a box which contains a magazine for the Walter P99. “The Walther P99 is a powerful and formidable weapon, but it’s quite light and compact enough to be adequately concealed. It carries 16 rounds of 9mm ammunition. Quite popular in its day and lethal, if used properly.” Keung picked up a magazine. “This is a container which contains the projectiles – bullets.” He then showed Tig how the magazine was inserted into the gun. “ She was intently as he inserted the magazine. She was anxious to try the new non-energy weapon. Keung turned to a pair of ear protectors. Put one on himself and handed the other one to a puzzled Jane. She looked at the ear protectors and wondered why they were needed, considering during a confrontation or battle you wouldn't be wearing them. “Put them on. In a confined space like this, it can get noisy” smiled Lee. She did as instructed and was ready. “Now I want you to stand facing the target…stand straight. Hold the gun in both hands..and aim straight at the target..but don’t shoot!” instructed Keung pointing to a circular target in the shooting range.” The cadet faced the target and planted her feet comfortably, she liked the way the weapon felt in her hands. “Take your time..there’s the trigger..with your finger, pull back the trigger.” Said Lee, knowing what to come next. It was a shock for first time users of such weapons especially when they’re only familiar with energy weapons. First comes the sound of the explosive shot followed by the recoil. Jane slowly squeezed the trigger and the noise and recoil both jarred her body and surprised her by its repercussion of the sound. “Good. Try again.” Said Keung. Jane fired a few rounds and began to feel more comfortable with the P99 and felt inner pride that she was hitting the target with more accuracy. After five minutes of firing, Keung saw that Jane had hit the target. “Well, how do you feel! Ready to try the Micro-Uzi? "That was great! I think I settled in quite nicely." Jane said, feeling much better about the whole non-energy weapon debate. “The Micro-Uzi was a popular weapon mostly used as a Personal Defense Weapon for the military and for close protection work! You also add a telescopic Relfex Suppressor. It’s a powerful weapon and a lot different from the Walter P99! It fires multiple shots as opposed to a single shot at a time.” "I'm ready." She knew the kick from this weapon was greater than the P99, but felt she could handle the Micro-Uzi. “Now hold it at wrist level with your right hand holding the trigger and the other hand holding the barrel…good!” observed Keung. Jane moved her left hand around the barrel until she had a comfortable grip. "All right." “Fire!” He ordered. Jane pressed down on the trigger and multiple shots fired in succession. ~Wow! Now this is a weapon!~ She thought. For ten minutes, Tig fired off the Micro-Uzi before Keung felt this cadet was ready for more. This was the first time that Lee had stepped foot on Vulcan. Back in his time, Keung enjoyed visiting places of historical interests. fter all he was a former history teacher. He had heard incredible stories about Vulcan and the influence they had on Earth’s development in space exploration. As Lee settled in his seat on the tourist shuttle, . There nine other tourists on board the ship and All were human from Earth” . Everyone had a window view. The shuttle lifted off for the two-hour flight. Standing up at the front of the cabin was the tour guide who was human who picked up a headset “Good morning everyone. Welcome aboard the Sha Ka Ree for the tour of Vulcan. My name is Sandra your tour guide. You going to experience two hours of a wonderful time If you got any questions, do free to ask. How many of you been to Vulcan?” Keung noticed nobody indicated them have “That’s wonderful. Let me start by giving you some basic information about Vulcan .It an inhabited M-class planet in the Vulcan system . It had no moons, but appeared to have close planetary companions. Vulcan was a founding member of both the Coalition of Planets in 2155 and the United Federation of Planets in 2161 The Vulcans are widely renowned for their strict adherence to logic and reason as well as their remarkable stoicism. The government is a representative democracy. Individual political advancement was are based on meritocratic principles. As for the climate..you will have notice..it is hot and has a thin atmosphere. All I can say it that its climate is harsh and as you will see as we will be flying over large deserts and large mountain ranges.” “So do they have a belief system.” Asked one tourist whom Lee noticed was wearing a clergy dog collar.” “Well, the Vulcans held a number of spiritual beliefs. Their religious system was polytheistic. They also believed in the katra, the soul and consciousness of a person, which could be transferred psionically prior to death.” Said Sandra. Giggling again and waving her arms about, Sandra said ‘Now this tour is partly is focused on the human prospective although we will show you the wonderful sights of Vulcan. “How well do you know Vulcan’s involvement in Earth’s early space development programme.” This was intriguing, thought Lee. Early space development programme. “How far back are we talking about?” Lee could feel the shuttle lifting off. “Oh good. I’m glad you asked about that.” Said Sandra. “There is evidence that the Vulcans conducted a series of survey missions to Earth as early as 1957. There were stories of UFO sightings at the time..mostly probably of Vulcan origins.” She laughed. She turned to a holographic image of a space craft “Anyone recognise this?” The woman behind Lee put her hand up “That’s the Phoenix! Wasn’t that Zefram Cochrane’s ship which had the first warp drive.” Sandra smiled “That’s certainly true. It was the ship’s warp signature which attracted the attention of the Vulcan survey ship, the T’Phana-Hath and prompted first contact between humans and Vulcans. Although later the Vulcans offered their technological guidance, they were heavily criticised for holding back Earth’s development. But we are all friends now, eh?” Lee could feel the shuttle flying faster. Sandra spent the next hour giving a commentary as the shuttle over the various points of interest on Vulcan. The shuttle flow over the Shirkar Academy “a prestigious Vulcan university’ ; a fly pass of the Temple of Amonak “Now that’s a one of many sacred temples..” The Vulcan Science Academy building “Now only clever Vulcans work there.” Lee wondered how T’Mur was getting on. The shuttle flew over The Fire Plains a lava field consisting of fiery pits which bought a few appreciative ‘oohs and ahs’. Several large statues of historical figures could be seen although Sandra didn’t mention them. Then there was fascinating Vulcan's Forge vast desert and deep forests. Vulcan history. “It’s the home to one of Vulcan’s animals called the sehlats “explained Sandra who giggled again when she explained they basically giant teddy bears “ “We are flying over Mount Seleya. It was more informal and personable. “Good morning everyone. Welcome aboard the Sha Ka Ree for the tour of Vulcan. My name is Sandra your tour guide. It was definitely a cracked rib, so he'd have to see the doc on the ship. The rest of the night was spent in deep conversation with Jardek, Teluk and Jekkos. This conversation had helped him understand, a bit, the ideas and philosophy of the two martial arts taught at the VIDC. He had more affinity with Jardek, but realized there was much to learn from Teluk and the ponn-iffla. If he could master a few of those moves, it would elevate his hand to hand combat skills. In the morning. he took his leave of Jekkos and thanked T'Par for her hospitality. He promised to return when he could, as there was much for him to learn. As a parting gift, he presented the mongkhon (headband) and pra jiad (armbands) that he wore in the fight to Jekkos as way of thanks. Knowing the significance of these items, the VIDC master accepted them, promising to display them to remind his students that one must seek knowledge in all things. On the shuttle ride back, he spent a lot of time reviewing the fights in his mind. He realized he needed to work on his flexibility more, something the NCO morning workouts were not focusing on. He'd have to see to that. Flexibility would be a key component if he wished to learn anything from the ponn-iffla. Back on the ship, he'd headed to the NCO quarters to stow his gear and get back in uniform. There he ran into Collier. "How was the fight? You win?" Devers smiled, "I learned," he replied. Collier looked at his side, "Herc, you need to learn to guard your ribs. Have you seen the doc yet?" "I just returned. I was planning to go there now." "Great, maybe tonight you want to hit the town." Devers chuckled. "We shall see what the doc says. How are things otherwise?" Collier shook his head. "Chief's got a training bug up his butt. And we have some new cadets to break in. Oh, and Carol is no longer the Armory officer. She got some promotion or other." "Damn, so we got to work on someone else to get access to the shooting range? I was looking forward to a bit of a ladder challenge. Maybe we'll have to setup an NCO fight league next." "Who is going to fight you, Herc. There was just something about that Vulcan captain that was nagging at his attention, so he had been keeping an eye on his activities. He sat on a bench across from the suites and waited. He had noted that the captain had a habit of taking a morning constitutional in the mornings. So he sat and waited fiddling, absent mindedly, with a phase energy converter that he had been working on for the past few days, as he watched the entrance of the Suites. He knew that sounded kind of creepy, but it was not out of his way to work at the trans hub, and he had never gotten out of the habit of waking up far earlier than he needed to to be prepared for duty. The joy and horror of being a Magillan, once you have created a habit it was virtually impossible to break it. And once you got a bug in your ear, you just had to discover what it was. He had to figure out what this familiarity with the Starfleet officer was. To be honest, he already had begun to formulate a hypothesis, but he needed more data. Observation and interaction was what they had drilled into him. A few days of observation, but he’d had no interaction with the problem. There was a blip tone as the piece of the converter he’d been working on slipped into correct alignment. He looked down at the device and smiled. He should be able to take it apart and put it back together blindfolded by now, but he was trying to increase the output. When he looked back up he saw his quarry. The Vulcan has stepped out of the Suites and turned… to his left this time. An interesting deviation from his previous observations. He wondered… . He had done some observation but it was time for some interaction. He stood up and dropped the device in his shoulder bag, and crossed the street. Even in a world where uniques beings were often seen, a Magillan stood out. They were taller than even most Vulcans, and took up a great deal of space. It was difficult to be “clandestine” so Magillans did not make very good spies. Bohb was no different. He was certain that it would not take the Vulcan long to realize that he was being followed. But Bohb’s purpose was not to be clandestine but to interact. He began to lengthen his strides until he caught up with his prey. As he came along side he looked over. There was just something that he felt was so familiar. Well, most Vulcans looked similar. But this one… there was something about his mannerisms, even his gait as he walked. Now Bohb was beginning to feel a bit awkward. He did not often understand social interactions with most races. Vulcans he kind of got. “Excuse me,” Bohb said the Vulcan, “I am sorry to intrude in your morning time, but I just have a feeling that we have met before. Am I familiar to you?” (reply Sekal) (posted by Al Muir) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> (Vulcan - ShiKahr- Outside the Nivar Suites– CO- Captain Sekal- 0706) Life on the surface of Vulcan had already fallen into a pattern. Sekal was aware that Dr. Solice spent the better part of the day at the Institute in order to monitor the neural regeneration process and would come to the hotel to sleep. Generally she would then arise early to return to her vigil. The Captain had his own rote being to make several forays from the hotel, the first being at this time of the morning. While T'Khut was high in the sky and the primary sun had made its debut was the coolest part of the day and walking to the Institute during that interim helped his body to readjust to long term investment in it. Taking shorter jaunts at midmorning and afternoon once the temperature had crested was aiding the adjustment as well. The afternoon walk was of necessity short. Vulcans normally limited their out of door activities during the hottest part of the day. On the morning T'Mur had been admitted to the Institute and the procedure had begun he had noted the presence of an unusual figure being that a large primate was not native to his homeworld. On each subsequent departure from the hotel he was also noted in the same spot and while he did nothing untoward his attention seemed to follow the CO when he left, even when there were other Vulcans out and about on the street. Sekal had seen nothing otherwise noteworthy in the beings demeanor so was not concerned. This morning however when the being looked up at his exit he turned toward the market rather than the Institute. There was another reason for this. Since he was varying his routine to assess the other beings intent he had decided some fresh fruit and juice would be a good target. It didn't escape his notice that the being had this morning decided to follow him so he slowed his pace. The other would then overtake him or slow likewise. The former happened. “Excuse me, I am sorry to intrude in your morning time, but I just have a feeling that we have met before. Am I familiar to you?” Sekal stopped and turned to face him. He cocked his head a bit as he looked over the other's features. "I do not believe we have ever met. I would certainly remember a being such as yourself. Is this why you have been following me?" (Reply: Bohb) Sekal shrugged slightly. "I have not been long in StarFleet however my Father was a member of that entity until 28 years ago and has recently returned. Is this why you have been following me?" Bohb nodded and said, “I’m not sure I’d technically call what I’ve been doing as following you, more watching, but yes.” He instinctively reached out with a finger and poked the Vulcan in the shoulder. “You remind me of someone that I knew when I was in Starfleet.” Sekal shrugged slightly. "I have not been long in StarFleet however my Father was a member of that entity until 28 years ago and has recently returned. His first commission was aboard the USS Nimitz and he later commanded the USS Hades among others." Bohb suddenly got very excited. The mention of the Hades brought memories back. Mostly good, some not so much. “Your father commanded the Hades? What is his name?” "His name? Saleke. Are you familiar with him? Perhaps it is my resemblance that has caught your attention." “You are captain Saleke’s boy?” he cried out wrapping him in an enormous hug, completely ignoring polite Vulcan etiquette. “He took over the Hades after Devan Sash. Of Course! Your father was a great captain. His exit from the Hades prompted my leaving the fleet.” He stepped back shaking his head in disbelief. “So Saleke finally found a mate,” the Magillan had a huge smile on his wide face. “I am so sorry. I am Bohb. What did Saleke name you?” (Reply Sekal) “How’s your father? He’s gone back to the fleet? What prompted that? Is he commanding a ship. Don’t tell me they made him admiral and he’s commanding a desk. That would be a waste. Wait, the fleet is back? What are you doing on Vulcan?” Bohb peppered Sekal with a series of questions, his curiosity piqued. His brain was working at near warp speed. He’d heard rumor of the fleet back in action but this was the first that he’d really seen any evidence. “There’s a juice bar just ahead,” Bohb announced. “Can I buy you a drink and perhaps get some questions answered? That is if you have the time.” (Reply Sekal) (Posted by Al Muir) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> (Vulcan - ShiKahr- Outside the Nivar Suites– CO- Captain Sekal - 0709) “You are captain Saleke’s boy?” He gave Sekal an unexpected... and crushing hug which drove the oxygen from his lungs. “He took over the Hades after Devan Sash. "He accepted the post of Vice-Admiral in charge of Research and Development after the Admiralty was sacked en masse. The Hades has been refitted and his flag is on it. Perhaps you have not heard but StarFleet is once again expanding and my ship was completed only a few months ago. As for why I am here, a crewman needed treatment and the closest planet that met the requirement was Vulcan." “There’s a juice bar just ahead, Can I buy you a drink and perhaps get some questions answered? That is if you have the time.” Sekal gave a minute shrug. "I have ample time." He knew which juice bar and where, it was close to the Institute and was a favored haunt of those who attended it including the professors. Due to the hour it should be relatively quiet. The Magillan was a bundle of excited energy and Sekal was unaware of the reason for it however he was willing to indulge his curiosity as long as it didn't segue into classified topics. They turned in at the bar and Sekal paid for a large, frosted glass of orange juice, no pulp then took a seat at a table by the window and waited for the next barrage of questions. (Reply: Bohb) (Posted by Charles G) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> (Vulcan - ShiKahr- Outside the Nivar Suites– Bohb- 0710) Bohb really wasn’t sure how he was feeling about the fleet being put back into expansion. His own departure was philosophical in nature. He was not in agreement with the way the fleet had been used. He’d been in far to many battles for an organization that had initially been for exploration and discovery. But he was glad to hear that Saleke was back in command of a ship. He new the juice bar that Sekal was talking about. It was a favorite of his. They carried a more… exotic collection of fruits. When they entered there were only a few patrons. Early risers, not late shifters. They were generally not interested in fresh fruit drinks. A nodded at the his choice of orange juice. It was not a common drink for Vulcans, but he’d seen a few taking it up. He stepped up to the counter and ordered a “Bohb Special.” He saw the curious look from Sekel and winked. Magillans were vegetarians, and Bohb was known in most of the fruit establishments. They did not have pineapples but they had a fruit that had the same acidic and sweet taste, along with strawberries, and a a few other fruits. The on going tease was that they wanted to give him bananas, but he was allergic to them and any fruit that had a similar genetic makeup. The results of his latest event was not pretty, and the juice bar was cleaning up afterwards for several hours. Drink in hand he led Sekal to a table. He moved the chair away and pulled up a larger stool. Then he looked at the son of Saleke and smiled. “Wow, I still can’t believe it,” Bohb shook his head. “Saleke has a mate… and a child. But no longer a child. He lifted his glass in salute.” “So,” he started to focus his questions, “a crew member needing medical care at the Nivar Institute? Must be pretty serious. Was it the little Vulcan girl. I haven’t seen her coming or going for the last few days.” (reply Sekal) “I hope that she will be all right,” he said sincerely. "She is in my tactical department." “I hope that she will be alright,” he said sincerely. "The process has a high success rate." Once again he skirted the details. “So the fleet, eh,” he went on. “What happened? I mean, everything had gone to, well, hell in a handbasket all those years ago. When your dad left I was certain that it would snow in the Forge before he put on a uniform again. Ktell must have been pretty damned persuasive.” That was not sacrosanct ground and he could expound upon it at length. "My father had a number of issues with Starfleet in its former iteration. Its highly politicized nature and its treatment of a life form which he had grown close to. You are correct in that it would and did take extreme measures to attract him back to the Fleet. He was quite content to remain with the Vulcan Defense Force with the project. The fact that I chose to enlist in StarFleet had no bearing on his return. It did however factor into the posting he accepted." “The Hades.” Bohb said with a dreamy look in his eyes. “I can only imagine what they did to it to make it their flagship. Some kind of transwarp slipstream drive to get you some place before you had to be there.” "There may be some misunderstanding. The Odyssey Class USS Republic is the fleet flagship and commanded by Ktell. An Admiral is considered of flag rank and his command of a ship is noted as bearing his 'flag' As for what happened to cause the cascade of events… you have no doubt heard of the attack on Earth called colloquially the devastation bomb. The CinC of the Admiralty was found complicit in the conspiracy and the rest of the Admiralty other than Jana Bell and Admiral Janeway were sacked due to corruption. The posts of the admirals were filled with veterans of the 52nd fleet due to their unquestioned loyalty, experience and capabilities." “KTell was a lot of things,” Bohb admitted, “but he was honest and loyal beyond any reproach. And then your dad, Vice-admiral?” "Pardon me for the misunderstanding. Commodore Remae was removed from the Admiralty by the former CinC and chose to remain a Commodore during the replenishment of that body. It would seem he did not relish returning to the desk you spoke of." He cocked an eyebrow. "Vice-Admiral yes. There are only 2 true Admirals at this time. They will no doubt move up in time." “It’s so much politics for a simple engineer like me,” Bohb said. “Admiralty has caused problems for the Federation for a lot longer than that. I still remember the internal war caused by Admiral Doenitz. As they say, you can never trust anyone over the rank of captain. However, I hope your father can change that. It almost makes me want to come back.” Sekal took a drink of the frosty juice, a drink favored by Saleke before him and added to his diet due to the side effects of other drinks he had tried. "Research and Development which is his posting was the department I was leading on Mars in an effort to return the fleet to relevance. We have caught up to and in some ways surpassed them. The quadrant is vastly changed from the way you remember it but we now have the tools to accomplish our exploratory push and expand our knowledge once again. And more breakthroughs will come in time. We no longer have a battle fleet like the former 52nd but have returned to the root of the Fleet's former aims. And my Father is not the only one who has brought a return of honor to the Admiralty. The Fleet you once knew is gone and a more enlightened one has taken its place." Bohb nodded. Sekal had given him some food for thought. “So tell me Research and Development, did they ever perfect that multiphasic sensor array to reach into subspace bands without disturbing or getting the attention of anyone living in those bands?” "No, that research is still ongoing. However we have had other breakthroughs in subspace technology you might be interested in. Unfortunately I can not discuss them as they are classified and the foundation of my ships warp engine technology." “No, no, of course not,” Bohb apologized. “I let my curiosity get the best of me.” He took a deep breath. “I can’t say that I don’t miss the exploration and development of new technologies. I’m afraid that I’ve been reduced to little more than a handyman, repairing old and broken down transports that make their way here. Although I have a pretty good track record. But I suppose you can’t go home again, can you Captain?” Sekal cocked an eyebrow at him. "I deduce from what you have spoken that you left the Fleet for much the same reasons my father did however as I noted those conditions have changed. I do not know your age nor your species' lifespan but it would appear you are still strong and vital. And StarFleet at this point in time is in need of experience to mix with the exuberance of youth. A former member of the fleet in good standing would be welcomed back." Bohb blinked, like having a glass of water thrown in his face. Then he laughed a roaring laugh. “Strong and vital? Well that was what the female said to me last night.” He looked at the placid face of the Vulcan. “That was a joke my boy. I had no carnal knowledge of a female last night. Magillans are a hardy species. I will admit that I am at a more advanced age, but our lifespan can be around 200 years. Although I am in the second half of my life I still have all my faculties.” There was a beep from his bag. He pulled out the energy converter and smiled at it. He tossed it to Sekal. “I’ve been working on this for a couple of weeks. A phased energy converter that can now produce 8 times the amount of energy than it did when it was made. When I found it it was non-functional. A present for the son of Saleke.” Sekal took a good look and turned it over in his hand before looking back at the Magillan. "Did you amplify the quantum output of the coil or modify the induction algorithm?" Bohb looked at Sekal as if he were about to give a trade secret, then smiled. “A little of both. I replaced the coil with a rotating inverter that can amplify the quantum output from the rectifier, and then made a few minor changes to the code of the algorithm to accept a continuously adapting modulation of the amplitude. That was the hard part.” Sekal took another one drink, considering as he did so then studied Bohb for a few seconds after setting the glass down. "This is exactly the sort of experience and thinking that StarFleet needs. If you would consider it I will be here at Vulcan for another ten days." He then raised the glass again. The chill of the juice greatly aided his internal adjustments to the rising temperature. But drinking too much could be detrimental. He stopped to allow it time to warm. "And I am available for discussion during that time period should you wish to talk further." Bohb looked at his own glass. He brought it to his mouth and poured the entire contents into it and swallowed. He smiled, enjoying the sensation of the flavor and the coolness against the acidity of the ingredients. “I would like that very much,” Bohb said. “You have definitely given me a great deal to think about while I am repairing the food processors of a Ferengi scow later today. Starfleet eh. It certainly seems like the times have changed. It would be good to be back on a ship I can call my own. You don’t have a chief engineer that’s a pain in the … posterior, do you?” "Not currently." Sekal then cocked his head. What he had spoken could be considered joking in some circles. "The technology on the ship has advanced somewhat. It might be a stimulating challenge to get up to speed on it." “The technology is a challenge I can live with,” Bohb smiled. “I can get a bit… excited and if someone irritates me greatly I may want to pull their arms off. But if you get hold of my records you will know that I have been through “sensitivity training” so I most likely won’t actually do it.” "You can be certain I will make perusing your records a priority." Sekal finished the last of his drink then set the glass down and stood up. "I do not believe that this will be the last time we will speak but.." he lifted his right hand. "Live long and prosper Bohb. And thank you for the conversation." Bohb slapped the table hard , shaking it then stood up. He raised his hand to give the best approximation that he has ever been able to achieve to a Vulcan salute. “Thank you Captain Sekal,” he replied. “I look forward to our next meeting. If you communicate with your father, give him my well wishes. I’d love to see him sometime.” The Vulcan nodded. "I speak with him quite often and also work closely with the department when at Mars. Should you become a member of the crew you would not lack for opportunity to meet him. For now I must take my leave before the temperature rises too greatly. I am still reacclimating myself and need to check in at the medical center." “Indeed, it’s not the heat that’ll get you, it’s the arridity.” He chuckled at his joke. “So long son of Saleke. “ With that he turned and left. Sekal quirked an eyebrow at the play of words, shrugged then left the building at a fast pace to get to the Nivar Institute. The half hour spent in conversation had been well invested.
