Judging by the smell and those dark stains on that wee basin. This is either the kitchen or their Sickbay . Do ya ken? T Mur found the accident and colloquialisms of the scientist entertaining. The sound of her voice was almost musical , and not unpleasant. She found herself being drawn to the woman , even if she did not completely understand her. She had no idea what a ken was or if she even knew how to do it , so she decided it was best not to answer that question . However, her conjecture of the purpose of the room appeared to be quite logical. I would assume a medical room of some kind , she agreed. They knew that we were in need of medical attention so logic would prevail to take us to their medical center or sickbay. However, I am not seeing much medical equipment laying around. She poked around on some counters and shelves , finding only some bandage material. Then she turned her attention to back to McTaggard. I find your pattern of speech to be most intriguing." Och I am sorry my Scots accent comes out more when I am nervous. I meant do ya agree. Penny said TMur was confused, I am not certain what you are apologizing about , she said as she searched. "That was not a criticism but nearly an observation. I actually find it intriguing. I also wonder what they plan to treat our medical needs with ." I hope they do not use leeches, Penny replied. T Mur stopped and faced Mctaggard, Actually leeches have many positive medical purposes that are often overlooked by modern medical science . However, if you are referring to the old Earth medieval use of leeches and open wounds as a form of bleeding an illness out of a body, I do not find that likely. These people may not have out technological advancement but they are far from the Dark Ages . Besides, I am most certain that they do not have a barber on board this ship . "Ancient Trill doctors were big fans of using sweat lodges to treat disease. And it takes a lot to make a Trill sweat compared to most species. A lot of patients died of dehydration and heatstroke back in the day. And I can only imagine the hallucinations ." His voice trailed off as he looked around. The room was sparse, but professional. He took out his tricorder . "I 'm going to take some scans and see if I can find anything else. I suggest you do the same." The bread had been quite good , warm and crusty on the outside and grainy rather than completely soft on the inside. The contrast of texture and taste was quite pleasant to one who was used to a rather bland diet. There was one fruit that tasted rather like a Terran papaya, several types of melons of varying shades of colors and other more mundane fruits . He found the Sharlayan concept of welcoming guests with food to be pleasant as well. This was a concept ingrained in many cultures as a show of hospitality and rightfully so as there was no better way to welcome a visitor than to share your food with them. Even more so when that food was in short supply . While Illuminar didn't have the resources to feed a population of thousands much less tens of thousands they could do something and an idea had occurred to him where more help might be procured. Their hosts had been quiet as his officers were enjoying the food which had been a boon since in the rush to beam into the asteroid lunch had been passed over . There had been no time for such pursuits when speed was required to determine the fate of a civilization . He finished a bite of bread and was washing it down with chilled water when a native entered and made its way to Rhyssa who had been their guide . She stiffened as his combadge chirped. =^= Gregory to Captain Sekal. =^= He tapped it in reply . The Ops Chief was finally reporting in but there appeared to be some interference. The signal was weak and he had to listen closely but it was legible. " Sekal here , report Mister Gregory ." "Doctor Solice there is a medical emergency , it appears to be radiation poisoning." ( Reply: Quinna ) He turned toward Skeese. "Admiral if you will excuse me I have crewmen to check on." The Admiral looked up in surprise. " Of course what?" Rhyssa and her messenger, Sekal and Quinna were already headed for the door and being followed by Ensign Lee who had taken up the watch over the Captain. He could taste some of meat and sort of recognised the various vegetables . Don t question what s been offered ..just eat it !! he was once told Medical will provide prescribed a solution He picked up what looked like the equivalent of an Earth s apple and bit into it . Mm it tasted akin to a rusket andi it was juicy. Throughout the lunch he hardly said a word mainly listening to the conversation around the table and especially to Captain Sekal and Admiral Skeese. The Sharlayn had realised that the Federation had not originally come to help them but the Illuminars had responded to their transmission so came to assist anyway . Keung was amazed that the Sharlayns had been travelling for so long whatever nine hundred and twenty cycles is and he had the impression that the Illuminar was the first visitors they seen!! Talking about having a sheltered life !. They managed to keep going even they have technical and radiation issues. At least the ships engineers will able to sort out things out and Keung wondered if his security expertise would be needed. As the Doctor started scanning the away team, the Captain stood in front of Gregory. How did this happen Lieutenant? he asked Gregory has been waiting for this moment. This was a huge failure on his part, perhaps the Captains faith in him was unfounded. Sir, while we were exploring the airlock chamber, Ms. T Mur discovered a map of the area , and started translating the Sharlayan language. As we were finishing our work, we managed , quite by accident , to open a trap door. Based on the map we had, we determined it would be quicker to follow the map to catch up with away team 1 in the engineering section. Unfortunately, there was something blocking our tricorder scanners, so we explored the area , until the Sharayan s came and pulled us out of the area, about a half kilometer from the engineering space , Gregory continued. That was when they informed us of the radiation issue. At that time, Mr. Hendrick collapsed , and was assisted to this room . He glanced over at the officer that Dr. Solace was examining. I ve asked Mr . Matrix to assay why the tricorders didn t pick up the radiation signal , and I was only able to get a signal to you after boosting it through the tricorder , Sir. She did not stop to give greeting or even acknowledge their presence. She had seen this so many times before , but it had been time. Time enough for scars to have grown over those feelings of helplessness . When Rhyssa finally got her attention tears had already started to form in her hers . She shook her head, put her hand on the outsiders face and gave him a silent blessing to send him on his way. Then the outsider expired. When she could no longer feel breath or warmth in the body she turned her attention to the other. Im sorry, Genesse said, but the radiation sickness was too much . He is no more." She went to the wall and pressed a panel. It opened to reveal a large box and a device that was much like a tuning fork. This was their medical scanner . She waved the fork over the two females that were together and shook her head. It was odd that the one with the pointed ears seemed to be less affected by the radiation than the fiery haired one. But both had been affected. The fiery haired female was already starting to show signs of cellular degradation , but she does not know it yet. The outsider s doctor was doing her own scans over the yellow shirt strangers and and the other blue shirt. She went over to outsiders ' Healer and tried to look over her shoulder and make sense of what doing, but it was not clear . What she could tell was that the life signs of the others were not where they should be . (rely Solice) Then she heard the yellow shirt explain the circumstances of their situation. And no one would walk knowingly into hard radiation. Sekal himself had found out the danger in the engineering spaces too late to give a proper warning . A failure on the Sharlayans part to communicate the full extent of their plight and a possible systemic equipment failure appeared to be to blame for the incident. Broadcast distress signals could not be expected to be exhaustive however, they were kept precise and short for a reason. I ve asked Mr. Matrix to assay why the tricorders didn t pick up the radiation signal, and I was only able to get a signal to you after boosting it through the tricorder, Sir . We have no treatment for it as yet . The speaker was one of the Sharlayans , perhaps what accounted for a healer on the ship . I can certainly use the help. Her plea was backed up by the doctor . Sekal didn't have time to properly consider the ramifications of the matter but the explicit instructions of his superiors needed to be followed to the letter. While seeing the inside of sickbay would qualify as cultural contamination it would be minimal in his estimation. "Very well the Sharlayan healer may act as an observer. Permission granted ." (Reply: Quinna) He turned to Rhyssa. " My team needs to return to my ship . Is there a faster way to the surface?" She nodded. " There is a device that is rarely used. The leisurely lunch was at an end , he had interrupted business with the Admiral that needed to be concluded so he could return to his ship. ( Reply: Away Team 2, any) (Posted by Charles G ) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> ( Sharlayan Generation Ship- Room of Healing- SO, Ensign T Mur- 1317) As the Sharlayans came in the Healer directed them to put Hendrick s body on a board. They then lifted the board onto a gurney . Kendricks was taller, by human standards, so compare to the average Sharlayan he was almost gigantic. The sheer number of Sharlayans, and the sight of the security officers limbs over sized for its transport struck a memory In the Vulcan . She recalled her time roommate in the academy, who was an avid watcher of entertaining videos . Andrea had been particularly interested in what was late twentieth century musical comedies . There was a video that she would watch on multiple occasions , Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory . Apparently it was derived from a novel . In this video was a future of diminutive humanoids called Oomp Loompas. Apparently the Ommpa Loompas would sing whenever they had a task to perform. As she watched the Sharlayans move Hendricks body she could not help but make that connection. She waited for the Sharlayans begin to sing , but they did not. But in her mind all she could hear was Oompa Loompa doompody doc, Ive got another riddle for you. At that point she began to giggle. The giggle quickly turned into a laugh that she simply could not control. She laughed heartily as she left the medical room following the parade of Oompa Loompa Sharlayans to the service elevator to the surface. It was at this point that she realized that she was in trouble. Apparently the radiation had affected the portion of her brain that was already compromised . He mind reacted, at first angrily, and then she began to cry, inconsolably. In the back of her mind all she could logically think of was, Please , make this stop . But she could not, and her emotions raged on . The Sharlayan Healer wrapped her arms around T Mur and held her tight as the elevator rose . They stayed in this position until they reached the surface , and then transported to the Illuminar. He wasn't in charge of this away team , but as one of the senior officers, he felt responsible for what had happened. He got up from the exam table and began to walk towards the group of Sharlayans , but quickly stumbled and fell over, weak from radiation exposure . As he tentatively picked himself up , he noticed splotches of red on the ground where his face had made contact. He felt his cheek, and felt wet. He hadn' t fallen hard enough to break the skin , and came to one conclusion: it was a lesion that had opened up since they'd arrived. He sighed , and sat back on the table , looking for something he could use as a support. As he did, another of the Sharlayans seemed to notice and came over to him, offering one of its arms. "Thank you, little one ," he said as he rested his weight on the little alien. He tentatively got up, and it was at this point T 'Mur, also following Hendricks out of the room, began to laugh. And a moment later as they entered the lift , she began to cry. Her attending healer wrapped her arms around her, trying to console her as the lift began moving. " Courage, ensign," Jaton said through laboured breathing. " We' ll get out of this and we'll be alright. Just try and concentrate." He then offered her a weak smile as they reached the top and the transporter sequence began to cycle, bringing them back to the Illuminar . (reply T'Mur , Solice, any in Sickbay) (posted by Spencer) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> (USS Illuminar- Transporter Room 1 - Healer of the Keeper Clan, Genesse - 1320) Genes held onto the outsider as she apparently seemed to fall apart emotionally . She focused all of her attention on her to give support and use her own body energy to provide her body with support. All that ended when she felt the first tingle of the transporter effect . When the tingle went away she could still feel a slight wave of electrical impulses throughout her body. Her eyes were wide with a mixture of horror and amazement. That was when she realized that she was no longer on Kal Shar. She stepped away from the poor creature who crumpled to the deck and looked around the room. It was so small and so large at the same time. Then she notice the smell , or to be more accurate, the lack of smell. This was what she imagined that clean smelled like. It wasn t antiseptic, but it was not dirty either. And it was bright. She almost had to shade her eyes. With a couple of banks she adjusted her vision, and her emerald irises contracted until the light was not so blinding. She couldnt help but smile . This was another world . Well, another space craft, but it was like another world . Then her medical instincts kicked back in. She turned her attention back to the outsider on the ground and helped up with the assistance of others . She heard a word- sickbay- and realized that this must mean their Room of Healing. With the help of the others she managed to get the one they called T Mur to move. Now she was along for the ride . She had no idea where she was going, but her presence was necessary . She had, once again, made the connection with this T Mur and made their way down a hallway to another door that opened automatically. ( USS Illuminar - Deck 5- Sickbay - Healer of the Keeper Clan , Genesse- 1323) As she moved TMur through the door of Sickbay Genesse stopped in her tracks , leaving her ward to the care of the medical team that suddenly surrounded her. This gave her the opportunity to really look at her surroundings. Now was the antiseptic smell that she ad expected. There were a series of beds , for lack of a better term , around the room. Each of them held a member of the team that had gone through Kal Shar s engineering area. By the bed was a series of readouts , that were, no doubt , the biological readings of the beds occupants . Several of the monitors were giving alarms , and flashing bright red alerts. She went over to the bed that contained the female that she had helped. The readings showed to lines , one of the patient s normal function , and one that was now. Most her body functions only deviated slightly from their norm. But her brain wave functions were far from normal. This did not seem to be the cause of solely the radiation. There was an underlying condition that had to cause this. She looked around the sickbay for the one called Soliss. She was busy with the one called Hendricks . Soliss was hard at work, but Genesse knew that she was fighting a losing battle. Genesse had been in that battle many times over the years. She had to give the healer credit, she was not one to give up on a patient easily. Looking at the desperation in her activity she could tell that she had never lost a patient before . The end result of this fight was going to hit her hard. Genesse had her own desperate desire to help, but she also realized that in this world, at this time, she would only be in the way . She decided it would be best for her to stand back and observe. Soliss knew she was there if she needed her . She would best serve those sick and dying by being a comfort and support to the one called T Mur who had been taken to a different room . She walked over to the room , watched as she struggled to maintain her emotional composure, unsuccessfully . As she turned to step away a voice called out , No! It was T Mur. Do not leave me alone . Please. I am so alone. Tears started to stream down her face. Genesse stepped into the room and went to the side of the girls bed, for at this moment she was a little girl. Reaching out the Healer took the girl s hand . A surprising strength grasped back. I am sorry, T Mur said , realizing she had hurt her benefactor . I m undamaged dear one, Genesse assured her , although it was not completely the truth . Tell me what is going on . T Mur breathed deeply, the strain of control obvious in her muscles. She looked at though she were working every muscle in her body. She looked at the ceiling for minute, silently, then closed her eyes . The shame of speaking of this to anyone was overwhelming, but to a total stranger but then that might make it easier . I have a condition , T Mur admitted finally . A condition that can make it difficult to control my emotions. Is that such bad thing? Genesse asked. T Mur shook her head , For a Vulcan it is unbearable . We are a people who pride ourselves in our ability to use logic over emotions. Emotional displays are unthinkable. To not have control over one s self, is to have no control in your world. My condition cost me everything; my family, my friends everything that is important . And now now I have sunk to the depths of that lack of control. Tears began to flow freely, Please, TMur pleaded, please,,, I cannot live this way. It is too much to bare. As Genesse listened she stood up. She too closed her eyes , and place a hand on her forehead. She concentrated and felt the energy in her body move. She felt the energy in her extremities, her finger tips, her toes , and drew that energy to her center. Then with a change of the pattern of energy she sent that energy back out through her hands . She felt the energy flow from her to her patients body. Their energies intertwined and she could feel the poison in the girl s systems. In small amounts she could neutralize effect , but in the amount she felt in T Mur was more than her system could withstand . However , she could give her a moment of peace. Relax sweet one, she said soothingly. You are not alone. Fear not . You are stronger than you know. I will help you all I can , but right now , find peace and sleep. TMur s breathing started to slow down and deepen. Soon is became a steady pattern. Soon after that came sleep . Genesse breathed as well and collected her energy before it became to damaged by the radiation . It had been years since she had pushed her abilities this hard and it left her spent . The relief would not last long, but it would have to do for now. Genesse sat back in her chair and closed her eyes for a moment. The blips and bells from outside the room called to her attention and so she answered the call . It had been the oddest meeting he had ever attended . Not that he had attended many meetings in the past few cycles. It was difficult for him to motivate himself to be around others He would grow close to them and then they would die . Genesse was the only one that had truly worked to maintain a connection with him, which had been a mixture of annoyance and relief . Having these strangers come, when they did, couldnt be simply chance . There were barely enough of them to fully colonize the New World. And even if they did , how many would be taken by the wasting death . How man had already been affected? Was he ? The Healer caste had never been able to discover what had been the cause of these mysterious deaths. It was simply a slow , painful, debilitating disease that seemed to eat away the victims from the inside. Perhaps these strangers can help them with more than their failed engineering efforts. He will have to hear from Genesse when she returns. He turned to the remainder to his son , What do you think Captain Rhyssa , are these the same ones who had come before? And where is the one who promised to return? And do we have a future, let alone with these people of the Federation? Skeese opened his mouth to say something but Sekal beat him to the punch. "You have my apologies for leaving so abruptly Admiral but the other group I brought down stumbled into the corridors leading to your engineering section and were exposed to a dangerous dose of radiation. They are returning to my ship now for treatment." Skeese stood to his feet. " I am very sorry that they were exposed . Is there anything that I can do ?" The Captain shook his head. "One of your healers is accompanying my party to assist. I have a question before I take my leave." At the Admirals assent he continued. " We would like to study your people, both Keepers and colonists. If it is permissible I will be sending officers back to your ship to do so. They will not interfere in your daily routine , we only wish to learn about you ." Skeese gave a smile. "Considering what your people are doing to assist us it is little enough to ask. I give my permission gladly ." "When might you be available to meet with our Federation envoy ?" Skeese glanced toward his son before speaking. "Later in the day, perhaps twelve turnings of the hour." Sekal then gave a slight bow. "Thank you for that as well as your hospitality. I must be going but intend to return and I' m certain Doctor Mias will wish to see you at that time." He turned to the rest of his group . "Away Team 1 is returning to the ship ." The stars seemed almost stationary in space due to speed of .283c the ship was maintaining due to keeping rigid pace with the Sharlayan asteroid ship. Out of the corner of his eye he noted the engineering officer manning the bridge stiffen as he turned toward him then straighten in his chair. ( Reply: Transitor iyw ) That seemed to transit around the Bridge in a wave as Skashe Winters was quickly followed by others. An eyebrow crooked then he moved toward the command chair and stood by Sienna for a moment . The view changed to Kal' Shar as new readings came online pinpointing possible access from space to the engineering sections of the ship. Sekal turned toward the Commander. " Were my orders relayed to you by Lieutenant Gregory ?" Sienna had been spending her time overseeing all the ship while Sekal had been operating as a diplomat. "Aye , Sir . I assigned the rations problem to one of our engineering interns, Cadet Valar . She is close to becoming an Ensign and I thought this might be a good final project. She has already begun." Sienna crossed her wrists at the small of her back, comfortably as they spoke. "The Sharlayans engines are in need of repair , specifically the one used for internal power . Their system stimulates their agriculture in some way. I wasn 't able to determine the exact means while aboard. Engineering and Operations will be overseeing repairs and resupply of fuel to their reactors ." "I had heard that it was atomic era power and that could be a problem. Our people are not used to working in such hazards. I will make sure the repair teams follow the correct procedures ." He turned his attention back to the viewscreen. "Away Team 2 stumbled unaware into an area near their Engineering spaces and were exposed to a high level of radiation, possibly lethal due to a damaged reactor and emergency treatment is underway." Sienna nodded , "I am aware and concerned. I have not had a follow up report from sickbay. I do not want to badger Dr . Solice while she is working on saving our unfortunate crewmember . " "The Keepers themselves appear to have enough to exist though there is very little variety to their diet. The colonists however are underfed . There is no way of knowing yet how many have died already or will die due to a shortage of supply. Illuminar cannot do much in light of the numbers we had already been given but emergency supplies might save some until relief can arrive ." "We have at least one cadet in each major branch right now. I would like the cadets to consider the ship a group project . It would be interesting information for the Federation to have . Lia Mirandez is a gifted linguist and musician. She is based in medical . I thought putting her in charge might work. The only real concern is diplomatic, Cadets are not exactly First Contact material due to their inability to be tactful." Sy noticed Sekal thinking. His reaction was thoughtful . "I have an idea that someone we helped recently might see this as an opportunity to show their appreciation." He turned his attention to helm. " Lieutenant Greywolf how far is Bajor from our current position at warp 5?" Tempest had been giving the conversation her attention, glancing down only occasionally to verify the automated controls and heading remained firm along with the safe distance they were maintaining from the Sharlayan ship " One moment Captain." She ran a course through navigation then inputted the desired speed before answering . "Bajor is approximately two days and eighteen hours away at warp five . Would you like me to input the course sir ?" "No Lieutenant the route of travel I 'm considering would be to our current position and not away from it . Continue current operations." "Yes sir." She smiled as she saved the coordinates just in case the subject came up later , it would save her a little time. ~ What are the chances that we happened to come to this area under these circumstances so soon after averting a civil war and bloodbath on Bajor ? If there's anyone in this galaxy who would owe the Captain a favor right now it would be the Bajorans. It seems the spirits must have arranged this .~ Tempest hid a small smile behind her stoic mein. " Very good ." He returned to Sienna' s earlier comment. " By diplomacy I presume you mean concerning the Prime Directive . Early enthusiasm often drowns out orders to those not fully trained. Rather than spearheading operations on Kal' Shar I would consider them planning , initiating and following up the tasks to be excellent experience . Putting them in that capacity without being in direct contact with the Sharlayans would be profitable for their development." "They will need access to the Sharlayan data ." She pointed out quickly . "But I want Cadet Mirandez to accompany Dr . Mias so she can study their language ." Sy glanced over Sekal slowly as if realizing something . Her console chose that moment to beep , "Cadet Valar has finished the research part of her assignment and needs permission to use the cargo replicators to commence the rations?" Since the Captain was aboard he had to give the affirmative order to begin . "Granted . I have a communication to make . You have the bridge. And as for the Diplomatic party , Doctor Mias will be the one to make that call." Sienna smiled lightly, a brief nod. She knew it was Bajor he was calling and she hoped that the religious race would help. They were known for their charity and kindness as well as being a stubborn race . In the interim his eyes traveled over the sideboard which contained his two mementos. Unusual perhaps for a Vulcan but no more so than the Anelurian Crystal and display disk his father had carried with him during his time with the fleet. His gaze lingered on the phaser Mark II that was held up by a crystal framework. The dark matter phaser looked like any other pistol grip phaser in use in Starfleet except for the red striping rather than blue . It had been gifted to him as a research object by Starfleet Intelligence agent/ officer Jaelle Foxglove upon finding a cache of them at the hidden base on Mars . Stennin had taken it apart, disassembled it then re-assembled the weapon after learning its secrets. Stennin was gone from the ship having returned to Vulcan and Foxglove was now dead. He had not been apprised of the death directly but had seen her name among a list of casualties sent in by Will Alexander , CO of the Exeter. Vulcans were not maudlin or emotional by nature and the memory the thought conjured up was not due to regret, merely an observation. The agent had won no friends among her peers and was alone, isolated and being hunted by a faceless enemy. During the return from their successful mission to Trill he had requested a meeting in the CSO's office which she had accepted. There he had offered an olive branch, his friendship as it were because he knew there would come a time when she would need allies. After such a long life hers had been cut off mercilessly without him having received an answer to the gesture. =^= Captain Sekal already? =^= He looked down at the monitor. The woman was still young , not yet forty years old, brown haired and still pretty. She was now adorned as befitting her station rather than the hurriedly replicated clothing or gown she had been wearing while in sickbay when he had visited her in an effort to begin putting the pieces together to determine who had been behind her attempted murder . The omicron radiation emitted by the Bajoran orbs would have successfully seen to her death had they been too late to intervene , even wishful estimates had given her and her colleagues in the temple no more than forty eight hours from their arrival . That hadn't been sufficient for the plotters though who had introduced a Cardassian poison into her system during treatment . Fortunately the poisoner had been unfamiliar with the drug and the dosage had been too low, it had also left a residue in her system. With the civil unrest on Bajor and proof a crime had been committed he had successfully broken the edict against her removal from the temple and Doctor Solice had overseen the purging of the residue from her system. After 3 days aboard ship and with the unrest defused she had been released to Bajoran security who insured her safety after the attempted assassination . Sekal was sure of the identity of the mastermind having built a tantalizing circumstantial framework but there had not been enough evidence to convict Dean Vedek Horavei . "Kai Hetel you are looking well ." The color had returned to her face and her cheeks and eyes were no longer sunken . Her eyes were bright and movement of her head and hands were precise and steady . =^= I was surprised when I heard the Sekal who was calling was no longer a Lieutenant Commander. It hasn 't been a month yet. =^= He shrugged. " The rank has changed but the duties and responsibilities remain the same ." =^=And you' re adorably non- chalant about the whole thing. =^= She smiled. =^= I have to admit it 's flattering to have a dashing young Captain asking after my well being but I'm not empty headed . I 'm assuming you have a reason for this transmission . =^= The Kai was still unwed despite being marriageable and no doubt having had her share of admirers . Her zeal for the Path of the Prophets had consumed her life to the point marriage and children had never been her goal. She was the youngest Kai chosen in 400 years having just passed thirty . That was seven years ago. She had been a compromise candidate ostensibly but from the information he had gathered Sekal knew that to be a facade , her enemies had planned to use her to denounce the Oralian Way and roll back the reforms that had taken place in its favor. They had not expected a woman of strong will who had not only resisted their pressure but had been more progressive than those who had served before her . And besides that someone who put the spiritual needs of her people above political aspirations. He nodded. " We are on a mission not far from Bajoran space." =^= And what is this mission about? Classified I 'm sure but beyond that of a head of state ?=^= "A diplomatic matter for the Federation." He noted . She laughed . =^= You' re going to make me ask aren't you? I'm assuming that's to insure you don' t break any Starfleet directives . As Kai I also exert considerable diplomatic influence for Bajor. Now that it is on the record please continue. =^= He cupped his hands on the desktop and leaned forward slightly . "A colony ship from the gamma quadrant with their destination in Federation space. I 'm not able to give you further details on that matter. The power source that influences their food supply is breaking down. We will make the repairs but they are in need of aid to avoid starvation of the colonists." Her mouth lost the smile. =^= How many?=^= "Currently unknown. I estimate roughly twenty thousand , perhaps more. Certainly not the thirty thousand we expected. The ship has limited resources , we will provide what we can but it will not help more than fifteen percent of that number and not for long ." =^= Any special dietary needs ?=^= "Unknown at this time but what they served us appeared to be standard fare . We had no adverse reaction to it ." =^= Just a moment . =^= She reached forward and spoke on comm for a moment then the screen split with her to his left and another Bajoran on the right . The man showed surprise for an instant. =^= Minister Crede how many empty cargo ships do we have in orbit or at dock ?=^= The man sputtered for a moment while mumbling the word strange several times as he consulted his screen. At last he was finished with the manifests. =^= Two Kai Hetel. They are due to be loaded before tomorrow .=^= =^= I 'm pressing them into service on a diplomatic mission . Are there enough raw foodstuffs, grain and vegetables to fill them ?=^= He gave a shocked expression . =^= But Kai Hetel we have trade agreements !=^= His hands were moving frenetically . =^= Will be fulfilled with a slight delay . You haven' t answered my question.=^= =^= Y..y ..yes. There are four cargo vessels coming in three days to load up on supplies for Cardassia . =^= =^= Good! Load the two currently available and you will send two of the incoming ships after them . In the meanwhile I want those four cargo loads replaced and you will do what is necessary to get our agreements fulfilled.=^= He made a strangled noise. Sekal hit the comm on the monitor . "Lieutenant Grey Wolf I need our current location , course and speed sent to me quickly." He heard a smile in her voice. =^= Sending them now Captain .=^= His facial expression must have shown his surprise. =^= Your crew is one step ahead of you Captain ?=^= The Kai' s voice was teasing. He didn' t look up at her until he had forwarded the data that had come up on his screen . The ministers widened eyes telegraphed that he had received them and he started working on his interface . "What is the speed of the cargo ships minster?" The Bajoran looked up for a moment . =^= Cruising speed warp five with warp six capability for short distances . =^= Sekal nodded . "Thank you. How long to load the first two ships ?" =^= Three days at the most, possibly less . I will make sure the shipment gets top priority.=^= " Thank you minister." =^= Don' t thank me, thank Kai Hetel. Now I have to be going to get the process started . =^= The minister signed off leaving Sekal alone with Krevi on the channel . "Thank you Kai Hetel." Her smile diminished as she shook her head . =^= I would have sent two as a matter of course but after what you and your crew did for Bajor and myself four is the least I could allow myself to live with. Will that be enough to get them through do you think? =^= "I do not have that information as of yet . Once I know for certain I will inform you whether it will be sufficient or not . Your first shipment should be arriving within six days." =^= I 'll have Vedek Gele monitoring my communications so you won 't have any trouble getting through to me. =^= Sekal remembered the Bajoran well , after recovering from the omicron radiation he had asked for and received permission to take up a vigil outside the door to her isolation room and had stayed there for the full day until she awakened despite the presence of armed security. It was Sekal' s understanding the guards had become quite fond of him. " What is Jisel' s status ?" Her smile went up several scales in intensity. =^= He is extremely happy as am I. We are to be wed in two months.=^= "Then congratulations are in order." =^= You and your crew can convey them in person, you are all invited. Without your intervention it would never have happened . It will be a formal state affair unfortunately. I will send the Illuminar a blanket invitation. =^= An eyebrow quirked. =^= After the wedding I attended eleven days ago I assure you that your wedding will be tame in comparison." She laughed. =^= Goodbye for now and the Prophets watch over you . =^= She signed off leaving him with remembrance of what had transpired upon Bajor . The Prophets including Benjamin Sisko had long arms but he doubted that their interest would be picqued by an event happening outside of Bajoran space. Solina and the team, were on the road to recovery. They would have to report for daily scans and additional treatments, but the major damage was already on the road to repair . He had reported to Commander Williams-Verin the Captains requests Around 1430, Dr. Solace came out from the isolation space where they had taken Hendrick. She looked unhappy. Gregory flagged a nurse down, and she told him that Hendrick had succumbed to his radiation injuries. He had suffered more than double the normal lethal dose. He shook his head and realized he would have to write a letter home to his parents, as Hendrick died on his watch. That led him back to the question of why the tricorders didn t pick up the radiation. Once he was out of here, hes have to get someone from operations to interface with engineering to solve that problem. When 1500 rolled around , Gregory had finished his first draft of the letter to Hendrick s parents . Being buried in his PADD, he didn t see the Captain enter sickbay . He looked up from his PADD to see the Captain quietly waiting , Mr . Gregory, I trust you are recovering ? Yes Sir , he replied. I have drafted a letter to send to Mr. Hendricks parents . He suffered too much radiation for the doctor to save him. Sekal nodded at his Chief of Operations. That is unfortunate. As soon as I can, Ill get after figuring out why the tricorders didn t pick up the radiation , he began as the Captain raised his hand. Mr. Gregory, that is important, yes and I will encourage you determine that issue . However, as Chief of Operations, I am putting you in charge of the Sharlayan repair mission. We are to repair their power and engineering systems as well as provide resources to the inhabitants while I work to get Star Fleet to provide additional aid . Sir ? Gregory said. Questions Mr. Gregory ? the Captain asked. Sir, no sir. Gregory replied. Excellent. I will expect updates at to the progress of your work. One final thing, the Vulcan paused, Your actions must not violate General Order 1. Make sure that the engineering teams partner with the Sharlayan s to train them how to maintain the operation of their systems . You can provide them with appropriate tools of the appropriate technical development. Likewise , make sure that everything is documented and provided to them in a way that does not impact their development . Gregory nodded, Yes Sir , I will do my best. She had never seen the wondrous medical tools that these people had available to them . They had tools that would heal broken bones in minutes. They had a device called a neural caliper that could even stem death from affecting the brain functions. It was all miraculous in ways . True to her original diagnosis , the one called Hendricks died. And as predicted, Solice, as she had learned her name was pronounced , took it hard. But she held herself together well and kept working. Some of the patients recovered quickly. They were stripped, scrubbed, cleansed and then medicated. Slowly but surely they seemed to recover. Others were not as lucky. The best that could be said was that they did not get worse, which was immensely better than she and her people managed. On the Kal Shar the radiation poisoning was a death sentence. Some others came into the sickbay, what a strange term , but they do house their sick here , to help. Solice saw one that she seemed more familiar with and spoke with her briefly. The doctor turned to her and motioned for her to follow. Genesse nodded and followed the doctor into the room with T Mur, who was , once again, suffering . A hypospray delivered a sedative. Then Solice turned to Genesse , "Do you know the chemical composition of the radiation, Genesse ? Quinna asked. Genesse frowned, I am unaware of such things. She did not wish to live through anything even close to that again . That feeling of hopelessness was exactly what Solice was going through with Hendricks . Our treatment was something less than successful , Genesse admitted . We used a protein granulocyte colony -stimulating factor to promote the body to fight the sickness from within. We used a dye to bind to the radioactive elements that was supposed to help eliminate the radioactive particles. The problem was that they had absorbed so much radiation in such a short span of time that it was not possible to keep up with the damage that was being done, especially in so many people . Genesse could feel her breathing grow rapid and her eyes began to burn as she fought back the tears that wanted to fall. She forced herself to control her breath, closed her eyes and focused on now. This was not the time to fall apart. She shook her head and opened her eyes . Tea in hand, he sent a note to the Engineering and Operations teams to meet at 1800 to discuss the mission. There was a lot to do to get ready for the meeting and he made the most of the time by reviewing the scans that the Illuminar had been making of the ship. He located what looked like a large door . The radiation readings from that door were pretty high and based on T Mur s map that should be a way into the engineering space . He paused, and tapped his com badge, Chief Lee, can I request that you second Ensign T Mur to Operations for the time being. She has been working on the Sharalyan language and we may need her skills to figure out details as we affect repair to the ship . =^= Acknowledge . Ensign TMur will be reassigned to Operations =^= said Keung . As I got enough issues with staff shortages, thought Keung . First Penny, now T Mur Thank you, Chief, Gregory replied Perhaps you should join the planning meeting so Security knows what we are doing. Who knows what might happen . =^= I would be happy to join the planning meeting but bear in mind I know next to nothing when it comes to engineering issues . What sort of security issues do you envisage? =^= The famous Irish poet Oscar Wilde once said To expect the unexpected shows a thoroughly modern intellect Gregory quoted . My concern from a security point of view will be the distribution of supplies to the people on the generations ship. We don t want to have our distribution stations overwhelmed or people causing riots for food. I see! said Keung who never read anything by Oscar Wilde. As far as he work out, I need to have to some intelligence to deal with the unexpected . Still he was familiar with the logistics of the distribution of supplies in crisis situations as it so happened in the past when he was involved with emergency relief programmes . Next, Gregory called the doctor. Dr. Solice , I will be holding a planning meeting about our mission to help the Sharalyans, and having discovered the radiation issue, if you or someone from medical could come to the main briefing room at 1800 to discuss radiation protocols, I would greatly appreciate it . Quinna tapped her commbadge to reply and the familiar chirp rang out, Understood , I will be there. Quinna kept things brief. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> (Deck 1 - Briefing Room - COps Lieutenant Dieter Gregory -- 1805) Gregory waited at the front of the room as people filtered in. On the display screen was the Sharalyan ship rotating in three dimensions. He had to admire the engineering that these people put into developing such a ship. Now they were in distress and Star Fleet was here to the rescue . Penny silently entered the room last . She had been told to attend . So she could learn how missions are planned. Sitting as far away from anyone as she could. McTaggard hoped no one would pick on her. He looked around the room, Everyone at ease , this isnt a formal briefing . Rather it is a planning event. You see the Sharalyan ship behind me. We have learned they used atomic energy to power their ship , and that started failing about 6 years ago . I have heard they have been traveling for over 900 years . This is Operation A New Hope We have a two -fold mission. The first is to effect repairs on the power plant. This is complicated by General Order 1, and the fact that the Sharalyan s have no idea how to repair the damage . That means we can t just pop in our technology . So we have to repair an old nuclear reactor , which is spilling high levels of radiation . We also have been asked to provide the Sharalyan s with training on how to maintain their system. The first complication is that the power system keeps the lights on , as it were . If we take down the pile , the ship is going to get cold quickly. That is where this comes into play, he highlighted part of the asteroid. This appears to be a large door and based on the maps Ms. TMur was able to download , he adjusted the image , and a pattern of corridors and large spaces overlaid the outer edges of the asteroid, It goes directly to the engineering plant. We had not finished studying the maps, but we didnt find another power station . So we need to figure out how to power the ship while we implement repairs, else this is all for naught. And with the levels of radiation , we need to follow strict radiation protocols , which is why I ve asked the Doctor to give us a reminder briefing on radiation safety. The second mission is humanitarian , in that we need to provide what rations we can spare to help the people. We don t have a census yet, but the goal would be to supplement what stores they have with what we can spare. The Captain is working with Star Fleet to try to get a supply ship or three to come this way to help with the food crisis. Dr. Solice , why dont you review radiation protocols with everyone, and we can brainstorm our next steps. We are looking at some very intense radiation . Even those working in radiation suites will need regular innoculations. Quinna stood and moved over to the console. She showed a rough schematic of the area. The concentric circles are zoned off. As you can see, those working in the main leak area will have to be inoculated every 30 minutes. Since you will be wearing a radiation suit , they will be programmed to auto administer the medication. Next zone out will be every 45 minutes . So it will continue as an exponential inverse. Those in the farthest zone will not need suits and will need to inoculate every 4 hours . Quinna sat but concluded, What is important, those in the 2 innermost zones can only work for 2 hours before then they must exit the zone and cannot return for 10 hours . Quinna took a deep breath. She did not mention that she will be traveling though all the zones so she can monitor the crew . Dr. Solice, how much protection do our worker bees provide for the team? The door looks large enough to get them in place. Not sure how large the engine space is , but even a single worker bee could provide a lot of help in moving the radioactive pile? Quinna bit her lower lip as she thought about it . The Worker Bee could provide more of a shield, however repairing the leak is probably larger than a one man job . We also have to consider how corrosive the radiation will be on the worker bee. We would have to monitor the Bee . Gregory nodded, Thank you Doctor. How is the ship stocked for the necessary medications ? Will you require dedicated stores for replication of them? We are already mass producing supplies to innoculate the population, however , we are going to look at what they have to produce some on the medicines that will work. Hopefully with the repairs, they will not have a need for it . Quinna said. Gregory turned his attention to the Engineering team , The next order of business is a plan to provide power to the ship while we are repairing their systems . I have here that Mr. Alantar is estimating a 6 day job or so . Hoping we don t find any mysteries. The first order of business will be to keep the lights on. I am proposing we use a shuttle to power the Sharylan ship while the repairs are ongoing . I ve estimated it will take a full day to get that in place, followed by the three days of repair to their pile. Thats a lot of work , especially within the parameters of what Dr . Solice has established . We will establish a decontamination site within Cargo Bay 1, and use transporter room 2 exclusively for moving teams to and from the asteroid staging site , which will be by the shuttlecraft we are using to power the ship . What about that control panel we found ? Any thoughts on that Mr. Matrix? I think the repairs are obviously a priority . I can get the majority of the tasks done in about 12 hours...more if I have help . I need to know what priorities you want to address first... communications, defensive systems , etc? I have addressed some of the routine repairs with an automated computer routine... the computer will augment standard repairs via voice command and availability. Gregory nodded. We also need to figure out how to distribute the rations to the people that are on the ship . This will have to coordinate between Engineering - I hear that Ms. Valar has been involved in starting that project - Operations , and Ill have Ensign Chifukukku lead that team. Since we cant transport too deep into the ship, we ll need to round up some bodies to help carry the food to whatever distribution points we setup. We will need to talk to the Admiral to learn more about the people. A quick look at our current supplies shows we have approximately 27,000 units of material in the replicator buffer which is enough for the crew for 45 days . As you know we recycle as much as we can which is why we dont carry more. We also have an emergency supply of 3,000 units that are not to be touched, unless the Captain declares an emergency. With the transwarp capabilities of this ship, we could be a resupply center within 48 hours , so we ll have to figure that out in our calculations . Ms. Valar, meet with Ensign Chifukukku and bring me a recommendation by 0800 tomorrow morning . Gregory turned to the CSO , Mr. Alyl, your thoughts on how to address our communication issues between each other and with the ship? Jaton thought for a minute . While the communicators are mostly shielded from low levels of gamma radiation, the spikes of alpha and beta radiation isn t something that the rank and file of the Federation deals with on a regular basis. As such, our communicators aren t shielded against it. Id suggest that we bring along comm boosters and deploy them every 300 meters as we traverse the ship. And move to within line of sight of one if you need to make contact with the Illuminar. I d also recommend that all members of the away team be accompanied by at least one other person at all times, should one commbadge go down. That is an excellent idea . I think we still need to learn more about this radiation, and why it was not picked up by our tricorders. Could that radiation leak into the habitable areas without them realizing? Even low doses could cause issues. Do you think Science can follow up on that ? Again, it s not something weve had to deal with in so long since almost all spacefaring races ditched centuries ago. I wouldn t be surprised if tricorders just don t scan for it by default . We ll have to remodulate them in order to detect the radiation. As for leaking into the habitable areas, its quite likely. I d suggest we do deep level scans of the entire ship and find out where exactly the radiation has seeped into. I d also suggest asking the healers if there has been an uptick in rates of cancer and birth defects . The meeting continued as ideas were tossed out and analyzed. Slowly the group started to reach a consensus plan for the operation. It was ambitious, but it was a large project. Everyone seemed enthusiastic , but the brunt of the hard work was going to be the engineering teams. Hes second some of the Operations staff to assist, even if they documented what was done so that a comprehensive manual could be generated to allow the Sharalyans to complete their journey , to wherever they could go. The planetary survey and other diplomatic niceties had to be completed stil . As the conversations started to die down, Thank you all for your thoughts, ideas and comments. I will be putting them all together and start releasing the final operational orders shortly. I recommend everyone get a good night's sleep, we have a lot of work to do . Dismissed. A second plan, to deal with decontamination of the space and training the Sharylans to repair their systems will be coming within the next 24 hours, based on the initial assessment of the damage. Transporter Room 2 will be dedicated to this aspect of the project . Additionally, we will establish a decontamination suite in cargo bay 1, on deck 7. The CSO will be involved in monitoring the decontamination procedure following the standard Star Fleet protocols. All crew will enter and exit via the large cargo door on the Sharylan ship , and be transported from the surface of the ship to the first of the decontamination spaces . After proceeding through the three decontamination spaces , they will be monitored before being released to the disrobing space to remove their suits . Upon being released from decontamination, the crew will be escorted to sickbay for a review of their medical status before being required to undergo a 10- hour down check before they can return for another shift. In parallel , and not noted on the project chart is Ensign Scott Matrix will be involved in assessing and repairing command and control inside the Sharylan ship. He discovered what we believe to be the major control panel for the system, so will have the honors. This is outside of the hot zone, so he will not have to undergo decontamination protocols.
