Masters asked him. “ 22 Sir.” Stom replied. ( Reply Masters) Stom looked him in the eyes the very first time his eyes had moved. “ I was deployed in a very active region of space that was a hot bed for organized crime that threatened the stability of the Beta Quadrant….” Stom paused. “ I believe I'm more experienced with looking at casualty lists Sir. Partly no doubt from the stain on their honor of being captured, enough generations have gone by now that the possibility exists that they could be welcomed back to the Empire.” “ Carraya IV must be a fascinating place, Perhaps one day I'll be fortunate enough to visit if the locals wouldn't mind a Cardassian face among them.” Emar said with a warm smile. “It’s not just Klingons and Romulans, there are Humans, like my mother, at least one Andorian and a Caitian from my recollection. A good half of the original colonists were from Starfleet Colonial Command, so there’s a smattering of other species in there as well.” Keira explained. “As far as I know, if you behave, don’t cause trouble and don’t mind getting your hands dirty, their likely to welcome someone like you with open arms.” “ Getting my hands dirty is my life. I'm an engineer.” He laughed a bit. “ I did want to ask you a little bit more about the engineering specs of this, other engineers have told me to umm…” He paused. “...Read the specs, but I want to know about the soul of this ship. No two ships or warpcores are alike.” “The Hades has done everything we've asked of her so far,” Keira mused. “I have a feeling she’s capable of giving more. We haven't seen her full potential yet.” “ Having served aboard this ship for just around a month, I've met talented Engineers, the only I haven't, until now, was you, and to be completely transparent you are by all accounts one of if not the best mechanical engineers aboard.” Emar confessed to her. “Reading my file?” Culturally it would be a very Cardassian thing to do, or Romulan as well for that matter. “ No, Captain. I did not read your file. Do you happen to remember 1st yearCadet Safix, she was that very condescending Denobulan who you tutored in your 3rd year at the Academy?” Emar asked to help Captain Merek's memory. She did remember a Denobulan, and a number of people warning about her candor or lack thereof. “I do remember, what of her?” “ Well surprisingly you were the only one who seemed to be immune from her slander, Captain.” “Some sort of punchline?” Keira asked for clarification. Emar shook his head. “ Captain, I wouldn't jest with my commanding officer.” The Cardassian said with a smile. “ She ranted and raved about your ability to break down and explain Base-Mode Programming and Modulations for Shielding systems. She said it was like listening to a Talakarian Chelling sing its morning.” Emar mentioned a comparison that was made between Captain Merek and a Talakarian bird-like creature. “ Her words, not mine, Captain Merek.” “I'll take the compliment,” Keira said. “What of the other talented engineers? In your estimation or perceptions, what do you make of them?” “ Many have proven to be quite diligent with their attention to detail. Lieutenant Alouron, is very task oriented and seems to be able to put out fires very fast, able to think ahead.” He said with a grin and pointed his finger. “ Almost like she can see the solutions before seeing the process. Working from end to beginning.” He paused and thought. “ Other than that there is talk among the engineering staff of them wishing to have more of your time.” He said and held up a hand. “ But many of them understand that time is not a luxury that a Starfleet Captain has, but I would suggest, if I may, that you pay a visit from time to time, once an engineer, always an engineer.” Emar smiled. “I see…” Keira said in all seriousness. “I'll take that under advisement.” She paused for a moment and used the opportunity presented, “Self reflection: How do you rate yourself as an Engineer?” Emar looked down then back up at her. “ I enjoy keeping busy, idle hands build nothing but lazy habits. I do tend to over analyze, but I strive to balance accuracy and efficiency. I am not as gifted in theoretical Engineering concepts as I would like to be but I am enrolled in 3 separate courses to improve that shortcoming of mine, Captain.” He laughed a bit. “ Truthfully I prefer to be left alone to make repairs and modifications as they need to be made. I work better by myself versus working with a team….” He confessed ~Not a bullet point you'd want on your evaluation report, at least not worded like that.~ The Captain speculated. “ I know these are not the things that I should be telling my commanding officer, but I also know these are weaknesses of mine that I have actively worked to reduce for the past 8 years of my life.” Emar added with sincerity in his voice. “The first step to overcoming short falls is identifying them,” the Romulan woman advised. “Kind of stepping on my XO’s toes here, but you won't advance well in the ‘fleet unless you can function well as part of a team. You can't lead unless you can function as part of that team. Understand?” “ Yes, Captain.” Emar responded. “Your first line leader should be mentoring you as part of their own evaluation, coaching you to take that next step. You should be volunteering to put yourself in situations where you can work on it, away teams, work details….” “ If they review my record they would see that I work excellent as part of a team, able to accept input from others, able to guide and encourage others and I am also able to lead others. From all my marks it would appear that I am the model team player. The part that isn't displayed on my record is the conflict within. I don't allow my personal feelings to affect my duties, but they affect me. I was engaging in subspace sessions with a Counselor on this matter. I am scheduled to have my first session with Dr. Doshi this evening.” “ From my understanding of Federation laws and Starfleet regulations you don't have to inform me of the specifics of what you discuss. Specifics of what you discuss are to remain private, with very few exceptions.” Keira offered. “ Transparency is important in my family. It sorta has to be when being a family of Cardassians living among Bajorans.” He laughed a bit. “I'll say that it seems you have your problems well in hand.” Keira said with a smile. “All the resources are at your fingers, you just have to ask.” “ And I will, Captain.” He replied. “ Well it seems I have taken enough of your time, if there is nothing Captain, let me conclude by offering a trip to engineering. I'm sure the enlisted would be thrilled to meet the woman who helped set up the Mars Base Defense system as an Ensign, I certainly am.” “I just might do that.” Keira said standing to shake the Cardassian Engineer’s hand. “A jaunt in Engineering may be just what I needed.” Emar looked down at her hand. ~ A handshake ? She really is full of surprises.~ Emar thought to himself and shook her hand. “ Until then Captain.” He responded. The Cardsassian, Derok, was, as typical for Cardassians, a difficult read. Michael watched for intent, and he seemed to have none. Which made the SFI field agent in him wonder why he was playing this game. His initial bet was bold, but not too bold. Only time would tell what cards he held. The Bolian next to Derok looked sadly at his cards and threw them into the center of the table. “I’m out.” Hansen was next and he chuckled at the Bolian, “No guts, no glory, Effren. I’ll call.” He threw his coins into the pot. T’Belle was up. Without a word she put in her chips. Her silence spoke volumes to Michael. Her behavior pattern had proven that it often meant she was exhibiting the human emotion of hope for better cards on her draw. Michael placed his cards face down and picked up a stack of chips. “Your eighty… and twenty more.” Time to see who was serious. The next player played with his chips for a few seconds then shook his head, “I’m out.” Now to see who would call his raise. She’s got something, but his raise did give her pause. Then Emar, as unreadable as before, continues the call. The only motion from T’Belle was a raised eyebrow. But it was enough. He wondered how many calculations the Vulcan made before finding the odds of her hand to win. Clearly it was enough for her. Hansen didn’t even hesitate. He tossed his chips into the pot and sat back with the swagger of someone with a confidence that Michael wasn’t sure he owned. Emar then threw in more chips, “Why not raise it another 50. That’s 150 total. In honor of those who have folded under pressure.” Michael’s eyes narrowed at the comment. It was the first time he did not like what Emar had done. There was no call to ridicule those that had already dropped out, nor cast dispersions on those who don’t believe they have a winning hand. The words, of course, did not phase T’Belle at all. She simply tossed her hand in and said, Fold.” Hanson had sat back to the raise. Michael was sure he’d intended to fold, but when Emar made his statement he sat forward in his chair and a flash of anger crossed his eyes. He tossed in his chips and looked defiant. Michael sighed heavily, knowing the boy just made a huge error. He tapped his own cards deciding on his own way to go. He had choices to make, and he had to wonder which way he could go. If he went for the tens his odds of getting two were pretty low. Of course, drawing a jack for the straight weren’t much better. He tossed his own chips in and said, “Call.” After Quinna had her turn Michael tossed one card into the center of the table saying, “I’ll take one.” The card came over to him. He let the card lay there, without looking at it. There was no point at this time. And with Emar holding a pat hand he wanted to give him a show that he really didn’t need it. The question was what was Quinna going to do? (reply Solice) (posted by Al Muir) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... A bold move. Before getting a new card. She was one card away from a full house. A low-ranking full house. She scrutinized the others. She was rather surprised when Michael did not raise the bet again. He called the bet. When the time came, Quinna called as well. Then she started swapping cards. It was rare when someone did not swap cards. She could not help but wonder what he was holding. She gave everyone what they asked for. Got her card swapped for a 2. Full house, but the lowest you could get. “Ok,” Quinna said, “Place your bet.” (Reply All) (Poted by Kris B) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Seeing two players fold, Emar threw in more chips. “ Why not raise it another 50, 150 total ? In honor of those who have folded under the pressure.” Emar remarked with a friendly smile and nodded to the Bolian at his side. “Ok anyone need any cards?” The commander asked. “ No, I'm content, Commander.” Emar waved a subtle hand. The admission made a lot of things make sense to her. Raven’s odd speech patterns and phrases, and how she interacted with others. It was clear she did not have a great deal of experience interacting with others. Something they had in common. Before Wednesday could say anything Raven changed the subject. “I don’t recall anything about Wiccans while in the great link. What do you know about changelings?” Wednesday’s head began to spin with Raven’s constant changing of subject, making it difficult to know what to say. She decided to treat it as an engineering problem. First things first. “There is little known, off world, about the Wiccan colony. My people went through generations of persecution for their beliefs. Even in the most initial phases of the federation misconceptions and prejudices ran rampant in the general populace, so it was decided to find a world we could call our own and worship the Great Mother and the horned one, Cernunnos, with fear.” Wednesday pulled her knees to her chest and hugged them for comfort, “And before anyone says that there’s no such thing as prejudice in today’s society, I assure you that even in today’s world there are those who considered me to be some kind of witch. What my people can do may seem like magic to the uneducated, but I always assumed that the people of the Federation, and especially the fleet, would know better. But they don’t.” Putting her legs down she leaned forward and looked at Raven as if for the first time. “I imagine you know that feeling. I don’t know much about changelings, except what we learned in the academy. You know, the basics, and the history of the Dominion War. I can only imagine what it would be like for you. I mean, considering the picture painted of your people in our history classes. To be honest, I didn’t realize there were any changelings in the fleet. You must see your fair share of prejudice.” (reply Green) (Posted by Al Muir) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Wednesday couldn’t help but smile. She leaned over and took Raven’s hand in her own. “I’m not exactly sure that I’m the best person to advocate for anyone. But if you’re asking if I’d be your friend, I will happily do that. After all, aren’t our friends our best advocates?” (reply Green) (posted by Al Muir) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Wednesday thought it odd that Raven saught her out and now has nothing to talk about. She, herself, had a myriad of ideas she could discuss, from discussing the nature of the universe, to talking about her beliefs. But she wasn’t sure what the changeling could add to those topics. So she turned to the topic Raven could speak of. “Tell me about yourself, Raven,” Wednesday said. “I’d like to understand you more. Like, I understand that you could chose any form. Why did you chose this one? Why female? Why human? Why the petite, pretty thing you appear as now rather some big, burly male? She answered her questions without really answering her questions. Except for the fact that the changeling thought it would be “fun” to portray a pretty, little redhead, which made her wonder what kind of fun she was expecting. Wednesday wondered how much greater an opportunity it would have been to be someone much plainer, and less physically appealing. Her reasoning seemed… shallow and self serving, and the Wiccan wondered how far the changeling had truly changed from the mindset of her people in the area of manipulation. Without a breath she went on to talking about voice mini Kerry and asked for Wednesday’s help. Wednesday shrugged and said, “I’m not sure how I could help you, Raven. I have no experience in mimicking , and that seems more of a physiological thing. Would someone in command or medical be better suited for that? Maybe you should ask Commander Solice. Besides, it seems… I don’t know… dishonest and manipulative.
