Cal Dogan - 0830) Cal watched as the shuttle barely squeezed through the opening he’d created. He was pretty sure he wasn’t going to be able to open it further without breaking a piece of the bay door off. He wasn’t sure that he was that strong. Once the shuttle settled the team exited and gathered. The only lights were the mounted helmet lamps from their suits. The lack of atmosphere prevented any real sound being transmitted. Dogan had to admit that it was a little… creepy? The only thing missing were dead bodies. “We’ll need to climb down two levels to get to the labs,” he said through his comm line. He pulled out his PADD and displayed the map of the station. “Once we get out the bay we can move to the turbo lift shaft and climb down that way.” He turned and headed to the airlock and ushered the team inside. He pulled out a small, portable power unit and attached it to the control panel. It had enough energy to close and seal the room. He removed the power unit and stowed it then took out the door release unit. The door to the station popped open and air rushed in through the crack. He then, easily, forced the door open. It didn’t take long to realize that the air vents were not circulating the atmosphere. The hallway was filled with a smoky mist that muted the red glow of the emergency lighting. It was not dark, but it also didn’t provide much light. They moved through the empty corridor carefully. When they arrived at the turbo lift Dogan cracked the door and slid it open. They took their time climbing down the shaft. Once they finally worked their way to the lab level it didn’t take long to open the doors. It was completely dark. Not even the red emergency lights were working. As he flashed his light around the room items had been strewn about in the explosion. It was a mess, which was going to add to the difficulty of finding anything. He turned to the team. “First things first, let’s see if we can get this room lit up so we can see what we’re up to. Then we will need to power up the computers to try and download any information we can.” He turned to the scientist and said, “Start looking for evidence of any of the research. See what we need to haul out of here and what we need to do it safely. Anything that looks to dangerous to move gets left behind. Let’s move people.” Cal stepped aside and let his team go into the room to set up lighting. Slowly but surely the room began glow. He opened the comm signal. “Dogan to Williams. We have arrived at the lab and beginning to start our survey. There is no power down here. No lights so we are setting up portable lights first.” (reply Finley, Imka, Williams) (posted by Al Muir) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> (Research Outpost 47 - Passenger Deck - Ensign SG Sam Finley - 0831) It was a rough trip to the Outpost. Sam could never get the hang of turbulence. He was grateful Lieutenant Dogan was a hands on leader who opened the door himself. But now that they were on the ground his time would come. The Outpost was pitch black, a nothingness. Sam thought if he stayed here too long he’d go mad, left with nothing but his thoughts. He felt a jolt when Cal came through the com line. =/\= We’ll need to climb down two levels to get to the labs. Once we get out of the bay we can move to the turbo lift shaft and climb down that way. =/\= He showed the team a map of the station on his PADD. The backlight was bright enough Sam lost focus. But he grasped the commands. They were able to enter the outpost proper. The mist and maroon emergency lighting made him feel sick to his stomach. It didn’t take long for them to make it to lab level. It was pitch black. “First things first, let’s see if we can get this room lit up so we can see what we’re up to. Then we will need to power up the computers to try and download any information we can.” Sam paused to think through different options when, as a coincidence, someone came over the com link. =/\= Masters to… Finley. Please respond.” Sam was not the sort who liked to be interrupted when thinking, so he replied with an irritated tone. “This is Ensign Finley.” =/\= I'm Major Masters MCO, but for this mission I'm piloting the drop ship for evac, you're the engineer, right? =/\= He thought that was an odd question, but he forgot he hadn’t been on the ship that long. “Yes, I’m the engineer, do you need something?” =/\= Alright, good to speak to you. I've got a theory and I wanted to run it by you to see if it holds water. My dropship is equipped with a warp core roughly equivalent to a runabout. She's hooked up for standard docking and for this model it automatically hooks to shore power to conserve onboard systems. My question: Is it possible to run power from the warp core of the drop ship to help power lifesupport, lights etc? It might make evacuation a little easier. =/\= Sam’s face could not help but beam. Before answering he pulled out his PADD to confirm the size of the Outpost and the power needed for its systems. It seemed like it would work. “Holds water? That’s the best idea I’ve heard all day! Yes, run the power over to the outpost.” (Reply Masters) “How long do you think this will take?” (Reply Masters) Sam turned to Cal, “We can run power from the warp core of one of the drop ships. Should be enough for our purposes.” (Reply Dogan) (Reply Masters, Dogan, any) (Posted by Tim) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> (Research Outpost 47 - Passenger Deck - Dr. Thomas Drake -833) As Tom left the shuttle he just felt a bit of eerie unease. The whole scene felt like an old horror movie. He couldn't help but be reminded of the 467 year old film Alien. But he knew he had to bury the unease because they had a mission to complete. "Wouldn't it be something if a creature just popped out of nowhere." Tom said, activating the flashlight on his EV suit. (Reply Thorne) Tom took a deep breath as he carried the medical kit tightly. With a deep sigh she removed her tricorder, making sure that the air was properly breathable, and free of contaminants. So far the readings were clear, but Akyla didn’t make the assumption that that would be true for the rest of the station. "Wouldn't it be something if a creature just popped out of nowhere." Tom said, activating the flashlight on his EV suit. “Thank you for that Dr Drake. Now I have another irrational reason why I think all space missions should be held safely on solid earth.” She did however alter the detection band and rescanned the room and corridors beyond. Tom took a deep breath as he carried the medical kit tightly. "Any lifesigns?" “Nothing in the vicinity, walls and electronic systems are messing with the scans though. I’m sorry to disappoint your somewhat wayward sense of fun.” (Reply Drake) “Don’t take it to heart.” Akyla said whimsically. “I’m not ruling out a silicon-based lifeform with an ablative durasteel exoskeleton that could be invisible to our scans and is going to jump out and eat our brains.” She knew she was on edge, since her sense of humour tended toward the surreal whenever she was. It had made life difficult for her roommate back during finals, but they’d gotten through things eventually. He saw that Gutierrez move over to the operator. He could not hear what they were saying but their body language indicated that it was not good. That’s the best idea I’ve heard all day! Yes, run the power over to the outpost. =^= Sean felt really good about his idea in that instant. Helping his dad when he was little tinkering with the shuttle was paying back in spades. "I'll have to invert the power flow manually, as the computers don't have power." Sean explained. "Depending on the draw, due to the blank monitors I won't know where the power will go until we turn it on. If they've prioritized lifesupport and shut everything else off, you might even be able to charge the secondary batteries a bit, but I'm just guessing on the maths." =^= How long do you think this will take? =^= "I've not gotten a look at the systems, it looks old." Sean admitted. "Guessing ten, twenty minutes?" There was a pause, Sean guessed Finley was conferring with the chief of security. ~Push to talk. Interesting.~ Sean had been sending everything "If nothing else establishing life support in a generalized location just to the locked down areas. Once we get the people in one area evacuated we can use what remains of that life support to reinforce our position, take pressure off the Cerberus systems and allow us to move to the next area." "Uh-huh." Sean nodded as he pressed the panel release thanking the giant space koala he'd heard people talk about that the panel still had just enough juice to open once. "We can certainly transfer power from shelter to shelter." The flat piece of metal clanged to the floor with a hollow sound. "Also might want to see if there are any secondary craft in this area of the station that we can canablize to supplement power and systems or we can use as life boats." Csintalan added. "Not a bad plan." Sean admitted. He scanned the power conduits trying to ascertain what needed to go where to implement his plan. "We don't have any other craft to rip apart..." (Reply Finley) "I'll get working with this, and give you a buzz when I get this thing working. If you hear an explosion, it didn't work. Masters out." (Reply Finley) As Finley signed out, Sean was scanning the junction and tracing the air with his finger following the conduit. "There it is!" (Reply Csintalan) "The conduits are reversible, if one knows where to invert the power.." Masters flipped his pistol grabbing the barrel, pointing the handle towards Csintalan. Sean looked over at the Caitian from the security department and saw she was carrying a rifle. He shrugged his shoulders and holstered it instead. (Reply Csintalan) "Gonna need both hands for this." Sean announced. He grabbed the spanner that was fastened to the bulkhead and shimmied it into place. It was now at the two-o-clock position. He gripped the very end of the handle with his left hand, his palm facing toward the corridor. Just below that he settled his right hand palm against the lever and wrapped his fingers around it. "Here goes." Sean said and pulled with his left and pushed with his right. At first it wasn't giving. He leaned his shoulder into it and it slowly creaked before giving way and the conduit junction rotated one hundred eighty degrees. (Reply Csintalan) "Well, all there is left to do is start sending power back through." Sean brought up his wrist tricorder and established a link with the drop ship. He entered in his command codes. He set the power low to start. If he did something wrong, he didn't want to add too much power. (Reply Csintalan) "Well, maybe we should stand over there." Sean pointed to a corner to hide behind a bulkhead. Finding what seemed to be the main computer terminal, she sat down. Her task was to find the research information and any elements that went with it. Watching the set up of the portable lights, Imka thought about the time on Earth where she went to a Halloween party. Her roommate explained the traditions, which sounded odd to her. It was like watching an old horror movie. Why would you want to be scared and pursued by monsters and the undead? Hewmons were strange people. Part of the tradition was to wear a costume to the party. Going with the horror theme, she went as the most scary thing she could imagine. A Ferengi condemned to the Vault of Eternal Destitution. She shivered thinking about it. Hewmons were strange, but they could be a lot of fun when they wanted to be. "I would suggest shutting down the life support subsystems, like replicators and keep gravity at a minimum before trying to pull any more from the shuttle don't want to cause a back feed." "Looks like I'm running the jump ship at maybe thirty percent. I'm seeing a pretty substantial power debt over by you, do you need any more juice?" As she moved though the limited life support systems Ainia knew that less would be more once they had an area stabilized where they could move people then they could start the evacuation in earnest. Station Actual was about to speak. =^= Whoever you are, your stunt could blow out the relays on three decks...=^= Sean could hear the warning in his voice. "That's why I took it slow, sir." Sean didn't know the person behind the voice that was on the verge of becoming irate. He sounded more like a Chief Engineer than a station commander to be honest. =^= Well it seems, your hair-brained plan worked for now. It can't last for long, it will blow something out eventually. =^= "Aye, evac of your remaining station personnel is going to take more than a single trip to get all your people. Shunting additional power from our dropship and her warp core wasn't for a permanent fix. The additional power will allow those not going on the first trip to breathe a little easier, both figuratively and literally. You should already feel it being a little easier to breathe. Oxygen levels have come up by half a percent." Sean explained himself. Sean could hear some beeping in the background. =^= Fair enough. Just don't blow out any relays, I'm already several months behind on the repairs she's going to need. =^= "If either of you Commanders don't mind, I've got some people to go evac?" Someone inside was rhythmically tapping the door, the this was consistent but lacking enthusiasm as if they had been doing it for a long time. As the team approached, Semaj and others realized they would not have been able to pump the door open with the manual override as a support beam had fallen from the ceiling area and wedged against the door at a 43.27 degree angle. Turning to the heavy gravity world member of his team, Louvre, “Can you remove that?” The woman nodded and gripped the beam and easily moved it out of the way. As she set it down, the clang. Morse, the arachnid moved forward and touched the door with several of her long hairs. “There are at least four beings in this room,” she reported. The partially translucent and transparent multi legged security Officer backed away. Semaj looked to Louvre again and was about to ask her to force the door, when emergency power lights flickered and the door controls lit. Within moments it cycled and slid aside. People inside let out sounds of relief. “Starfleet security, please identify yourselves,” Semaj called. There was a pause and humanoid eyes blinking in even the dim emergency light after time in uncycled air and darkness. “Alpha shift research team 6. We were all locked in our lab.” The medic waved his medical tricorder.“Dehydration, otherwise stable.” Semaj nodded. “Let’s lead this team to the evac shuttle as ordered by Lt. Dogan. True he could monitor and interpret levels on varying diagnostic tests, but he was not an expert on such matters. “ Perhaps you connected with someone in a dark room ?” He asked the second officer. “Yes that’s true if they are trapped in the dark. It required a password. Imka rolled her eyes and sighed. How was she going to pick the right one? It could be dozens of characters. What if the system had security protocols allowing a limited number of tries? She had to think logically. There was no point in presuming the password was random characters; she'd never get that. She had to hope it meant something to the person that created it. Going through the station roster in her mind, the person that set up the system was most likely the chief researcher. She recalled his bio. "Computer, password is Jennifer." [Access denied.] "Computer, password is Julia." [Access denied.] So much for the password being the researcher's wife or daughter. What else was there about him? What were his hobbies? Work. Research. Family. Boring guy. Imka chuckled. What else did he like? "Computer, password is Gemini." [Access denied.] In frustration, Imka tossed her hands into the air. She thought she had it with the name of his dog. Maybe the password still had something to do with his beloved pet. She was running out of ideas. "Computer, password is golden retriever." [Access granted.] Imka whooped a cry of success. Seeing others staring at her, she just smiled. It was time to get to work. There was a significant size difference. He was no engineer, but even he could see that that solution won’t last long. “Well then,” he said, “once they get that going we’ll have to move quickly. There’s no telling how long it will last.” (reply any) Once the power came on in the lab he reiterated his concern for expedience. The area had been secured by the security team. Nothing was getting in or out of this area without setting off an alert. As Cal plodded through the lab the lights flickered periodically. A reminder that this was a temporary fix. He noted that Imka had gained access to one of the lab’s computers. He stepped behind her and asked, “Are you seeing anything unusual?” (reply Imka) Then he moved away and continued his circuit of the room. As he walked his eye caught sight of something odd. He moved over to the table at the left side of the room and saw what appeared to be broken glass. He easily slid the heavy table to the side and and knelt down. There was a substantial amount of the material under the table. He pulled out his tricorder and scanned it. It was some kind of reinforced clear silicate. There was some kind of residue on the shards. Clearly this had been a container, but what did it contain? And the fall was not traumatic enough to shatter the container in the manner it was. It was more like something had broken out. Something strong enough to break through the reinforced container. If it needed an atmosphere to breathe then it may no longer be alive.
