We’ll give it a go, if you truly feel uncomfortable and want to stop, just say so. OK?” Arysha nodded, {{OK}} “Computer. Training programme Dragovar 774 delta.” The room blinked to black, then re-appeared with a sponge mat on the floor, and a table with the new phaser sniper rifle on it. “OK. Safety basics.” Dragovar walked to the weapon and lifted it. “Even though this is a holographic reconstruction of the rifle, you should always follow the same rule as a live weapon.” He paused to make sure this was sinking in. “Never point it at anyone unless you intend to use it. Keep the emitter pointing down the range at all times. If I shout stop, safe the weapon and lay it on the floor.” He pointed to the small safety catch on the weapon as he spoke. “Never leave it leaning against something, in case it falls over and goes off.” Arysha nodded, thinking to herself that she would have a headache tonight if the fates had anything to do with it. “OK serious stuff over. I’ve set up several targets at a variety of distances. Lets see if you can hit them. The best position is prone. Lie down on the mat for me. Bend your right leg, and rest on your elbows.” Arysha followed the instructions. She picked up the weapon and balanced it against her shoulder, pulling up what memories she had of her Academy trraining on weapons. “Good. Move this leg a little more.” He slid her leg a little to make her more stable. “Drop the bipod legs, then you don’t have to balance as much. Comfy?” Arysha grimaced a little, but nodded, signing with one hand, "Sure-sure." “OK, look down the scope. It should appear fuzzy at first, until the system recognises your eyes focal length and vision score. Once it is clear, find a target and gently squeeze the trigger.” She squinted into the scope for several seconds, but it wouldn't focus for her. Pulling her head back she looked at Dragovar. Gently laying the weapon down she signed at him, {{Scope work not. Problem think glasses-mine. Take-them-off must.}} (reply Tallac) Arysha sighed a little and sat up. She'd explained this to many people and Tallac would likely not be the last. {{Glasses eyes-see not. Glasses for-for? The lens may interfere with the sight’s ability to scan your eye. Should not be too much of a problem will it ?” Arysha sighed a little and sat up. {{Glasses eyes-see not. Glasses for-for? You know what to do, so I’ll kneel next to you, and tap you on the shoulder if I need you to stop for anything OK.”  (reply Arysha) Tallac pointed down the range at a target, and gave her a thumbs up. “Computer. She removed the glasses and placed them carefully to the side. Tallac pointed down the range at a target, and gave her a thumbs up. A pair of binoculars materialised next to him as she went back to the scope and stared into it. The view focused after a fuzzy second or two and she sighted the target indicated. The display was giving her so much information it almost made her dizzy to think about the distance. She squeezed the trigger and dust flew up about 5 meters away from the target. (reply Tallac) Arysha frowned and adjusted the gun. He also mimed pulling the trigger slowly. “Squeeze the trigger gently. Pulling it will move the aim slightly.” “Even though you missed, the shot was not to far away. Baylon seemed to be thinking as both the junior officers spoke, he looked a Mil will a small grin. "Are you telling me, mister Nicolae that you don't need any additional training? I think it might be best if we allowed our science department to handle the costuming for this mission, and we focus on the use of the weapons we'll be working with. I have no doubt that we could all use a refresher course." "No doubt sir, I'm far from capable with a handheld weapon, more sabotage and good old hand to hand; but I'm sure the giant will keep me right." Mil grinned and looked at Tallac as he spoke. It was Tallacs turn, as Baylon spoke Mil looked around, not ignoring the conversation but thinking about the holo programme; he needed to study the PADD to get more info. Trinin looked back at both Mil and Tallac "I need you two to focus on the weapons and the techniques and the tactics. We are not going to have a lot of time to get the away team, once approved by the captain into fighting shape. One wrong move could change the way they think about their weapon, the way its used and sometimes that's all it takes to create a catastrophe. Be thorough and be concise. Identify the most obvious differences and develop a training program to bring those to light. Military force of arms is by far one of the most culturally altering force, we don't want to influence it in the slightest way. And don't take it easy on them. make them earn it, anyone unable to make the grade will be off the team, simple as that." Dragovar gave another lob-sided grin "I don’t think many of them are going to like me by the time I have put them through their paces properly." Baylon nodded, "good maybe that will keep them alive. I want a report on your progress by 2200 tonight, in person in the holodeck, be prepared to show me a demonstration of what you've discovered." "Aye sir, I'm sure that Little John will be able to handle most of the training and I'll work out the holodeck" Mil joked, Tallac always seemed to make size jokes so he just played along. "Right Tallac, what are we thinking? The PADD shows mostly roaming greenery, makeshift farmlands, we've also got dense woodland. Would suggest we train in all environments?" (Reply Tallac) "Well the outpost looks like its surrounded by woodland, there's some elevation too" Mil looked down at the control panel and started tapping. "Computer, create a standard science observation post for long time observation" [working] A grey building appeared in the middle of the room, Mil tapped again and looked up as the ground turned to mud with patches of green rubble. After a series of even more taps the outpost was surrounded by dense trees, leaving a small path running past the unit. "What do you think?" Mil asked Tallac amid the tall trees. (Reply Tallac) "Yeh got ya" NRPG: I'm assuming a few alterations at this point. RPG: Mil returned to the panel and continued taping. NRPG: Obviously the changed and such won't be a 5 min job...I'm guessing whilst Mil is taping away it would be nearly half an hour/ forty mins and Tallac would be giving advice and doing his own thing..so feel free to add stuff. How about we start there and work outwards.” "Well the outpost looks like it’s surrounded by woodland, there's some elevation too. Computer, create a standard science observation post for long time observation" [working] A grey building appeared in the middle of the room. Tallac watched as the holodeck created the environment around him. The process still fascinated him. "What do you think?" Mil asked him. “Good start. I don’t think to woods are as thick as this though. The ground is rockier as well. Less mud.” Tallac glanced back and forward to his padd, comparing the two. "Yeah got ya" Came the reply as Mil tapped the console furiously, altering the environment to accurately reflect the surrounding area.   “Looks good.” Tallac said in praise. “Add some effects, bird song, insects stuff like that. I want this to be as real as possible.”  (reply Mil)   “That’s fine. OK here are the details for some bad guys. "Mine?" Zzt asked, confused. He looked at the tiny woman and even leaned forward to sniff the top of her head. He then leaned in close to Holland and whispered a little too loudly. "You sure she want mate with Zzt? Zzt no so sure. She kind of small." Arysha's jaw just about dropped, but she held herself together as she greeted the Officer and received some claw wiggling in return accompanied by large bear canine teeth bared in her direction. Her eyes went wide and she felt herself begin to panic. Peter chuckled and then, unable to contain himself he laughed. "No Zzt. I don't think she wants that. I meant I've assigned her to you to help with the cloaking device." (reply Zzt) Peter contained himself, "I'm sorry, I should have been clearer in the first place." I want this to be as real as possible.” "Right on it, I will add a little heat as well; no point in practise if it won't resemble the real thing." Looking down he accessed the atmospheric controls and put a tight humidity in the air, a little damp. He also removed more of the mud and replaced it with stones. "Feel like home!?" He asked pressing the final button.   “That’s fine. OK here are the details for some bad guys. Generate them and we’ll see how they move.” Mil took the PADD and put the parameters into the holodeck. He looked up as the men appeared, three soldiers dressed with weapons and leather armour.   “Computer, replicate two of their sword. Put them next to me.” Tallac ordered   The swords appeared and Tallac picked one up and wielded it in the air “The blade should balance close to the hilt. They are not the best quality, but this is only a test.” Mil thought he sensed a bit of disappointment in his friends voice. "Let's see what Holland comes up with, I'm sure we can make some final adjustments if needed." Mil reassured Tallac as there was another woosh. “You coming?” Tallac asked and the programme started. Mil shrugged "Computer, remove work panel" [working] The panel disappeared, Mil picked up a sword, it felt a little heavy and bulky. He raised his eyebrows just as one soldier charged at him. "Urgh!" Mil shouted and tried to block the downward blow "Tallac, I'm a little rusty here" He waved the sword and swung for the midriff which was also blocked. (Reply Tallac) "Thanks for that!" Zzt nodded and moved over to the Master System Display table and brought up all relevant data on the ships warp drive and support systems. Zzt's paws danced across the MSD table as he made minute adjustments to various support systems and the ships warp field geometry. Slowly the Hades accelerated from warp 9.2 to warp 9.8. Zzt stood, paws over the MSD table for several seconds watching the systems display as the ship settled in to it's new speed. He then looked over at Lt. Holland. Mil grunted. "Tallac, I'm a little rusty here"   He neatly sidestepped the third man who wielded a large double headed battleaxe, before slashing the man who was attacking Mil across his ribs, slowing him down.   “Take his weapon out of the equation.” He shouted as he prepared for the axeman to charge again. “Go for the knuckles.”   The axe blade almost sang as it was swung at Tallac’s head. He dropped to his knees so it passed over his head, then thrust upwards into the midriff of his opponent.   The man let out a grunt of pain, then collapsed in a heap, the suction of the body did not allow him to pull the blade out before the man collapsed. Tallac was now running on instinct, and snatched the fallen man’s axe, whirling round to face the next target.   He saw Mil dispatch his own target with a well timed thrust, and nodded in approval.   “Nicely done.” He hefted the axe onto his shoulder. “The blades are strong enough, the lack of balance is not down to your re-creation, but to the designs that we have been given. They worked well as Zzt pushed the warp drive further than the recommends and Peter watched the prismatic image of the warp field shift slowly as the warp intermix slowly ticked over. Peter could feel the ship groan under the pressure, but he also felt certain that she would not break - but only just. "Computer, reset simulation" Mil moved in front of the three men and picked up the weapons, handing one to his friend "arm yourself, Computer, start simulation" The three holograms started to attack again, Mil rose his weapon and brought it to a point. And also the opportunity to study a new language that may well have not been documented by Federation anthropologists in any depth was very very appealing. Staring at his monitor, he saw that the diagnostic he was running was finished. He turned around and saw Peter in his office, and the door was open. Eoin crossed over and knocked on the door frame to get the CEO's attention. "The diagnostic is finished, sir. It didn't find anything." "Certainly, you've done enough and I'm sure you have other projects in mind. However, we don't all have you ability with languages. Make sure you keep some time to the Unitversal Translator." Pete nodded, "Good, we'll need that before we hit planetside, but other than that, have fun." As Ensign Macliam left, Peter turned back to his console and the specs for the sword he had been given, chunkier than the swords he had been taught on earth, but much lighter than the Klingon equivalents, Pete tought it a good looking weapon. ~A bit of elegance and a bit of barbarism.~ (reply any, none needed) (posted by Lori) (USS Hades – FO’s Office – FO LtCmdr Bracken - 18:00) Dale heard the beep of the message come through to her desk terminal, she’d found herself daydreaming again, so much was on her mind with regard to this next mission. Baylon said as he approached the pair. "The level of detail is very exact. Which of you would like to give me a run down on what you've done here?” Tallac spoke first and Mil paced the weapon down and stood more formally.   “Its Mil’s baby sir. "Tallac has pumped all the weaponry and battlefield knowledge into this" Mil tapped a few buttons and reset the programme. "Using the ships library I've been able to recreate some of the aftermath of previous battles, Tallac said it was a little static so, together we've added more life to the programme than many." (Reply Trinin) Mil regenerated one of the scenes, several bodies lay dismembered surrounded in pools of blood. Tallac spoke and pointed to the floor. “The goons are holodeck recreations of people on the data tapes from the surface. The weapons are primitive, but effective. (Reply Trinin) "The system is ready to go, we've created a dumbed down version to allow basic training then move upwards to ready the crew for the horrors of battle." Mil tapped the panel and recreated another weapon, the system placed five enemies armed and ready in front of the team. He passed around the desk, picked up the weapon and walked to Trinin "Want a go sir?" (Reply Trinin and Dragovar) (Posted by Mat Hodson) (USS Hades, Holodeck 2, FO LtCmdr Bracken, 2205)   Dale stepped between the two trees, their dense foliage masking her passage, her footfalls silent, beneath silent feet. She allowed herself a smile as she breathed in the air, the forest smell filling her lungs. She continued her silent passage until she reached a clearing, where a couple of her fellow officers had been set upon by brigands of some kind or another, most of them now lay defeated and dying on the grass in the middle of the clearing, but one had moved unseen around the edge, flanking the others. She reached round her back and pulled a couple of arrows out the bundle attached to her back, thrusting them point down into the dirt in front of her. It was a myth that arrows were stored in a quiver, no, they were usually stuck in the ground in front of the archer, mainly for easy grabbing in the heat of battle; but also the dirt on the head made the wounds even more fatal. She then lifted the bow off her shoulder. It stood an inch taller than she was; 6 foot from tip to tip. This weapon, sadly, would not make it to the surface of Lertarni; it had been made for her as a graduation present from the academy. Her Father had gone to a master bowmaker on Earth and had had it handmade using tools and techniques over 1500 years old. The result was a weapon that had dominated European warfare for nearly five hundred years, culminating in this; The English Warbow. It had reigned supreme over the battlefields of Europe; bowmen from England and Wales were so feared that they routinely had their fingers cut off if they were captured by the enemy. That had been a thousand years ago; and now, Dale stood in this glade, and notched and arrow, a grim face of determination falling across her as she did so. She grunted slightly at the draw weight of the bow, a touch above 90lbs; as she drew the arrow back, she felt the string touch her cheek. She raised the bow, then dropped it slightly, allowing for the slight dip into the centre of the glade, the distance was a good hundred feet.   Then let go of the string.   The arrow shot across the glade, and hit its target, burying itself to the feathering in the chest of the unseen assailant. Dale knew that it was unneccesary, but she quickly followed it with another, which itself found its target, which fell, beaten, dying. Dale stepped slowly toward her fellow Officers, and spoke gently, rubbing her shoulders, “Is it wrong that I enjoyed doing that?” (Reply any in holodeck) (posted by Mark) (USS Hades, Holodeck 2, ATAC Ensign Tallac Dragovar, 2208)   “Is it wrong that I enjoyed doing that?” Lt Cmdr Bracken asked.   “I was wondering when you’d appear, Lieutenant Commander” Dragovar said with a smile. “If you want to sneak up on someone, do so from downwind.”   (Reply Bracken)   “I have smelled clean clothing, a linen freshener of some form, for the last few minutes. He indicated to the weapon she carried. “Bows are an enjoyable weapon, and a game-changer in the right hands. The battle of Agincourt on earth proved that. Did you know that is where the original insult of raising two fingers came from?” “I did actually, the French threatened to cut off the bow fingers of every English and Welsh archer they captured. In some parts it’s still as offensive as it was in 1300ad. That’s quite a grudge.” NRPG: This is actually still true, I’ve no idea how this translates to our US cousins, but the two finger salute is still exceptionally offensive when performed in parts of France. Especially when you’re English. RPG: “It is a good looking bow, Yew?” He asked. Dale nodded, “Yeah, Yew, Italian actually, where the best wood came from in the middle ages on Earth, I cut the tree down myself. My Father had it made into a longbow for my graduation of the academy. Took me two years to learn how to draw it. Tell me about the Lertarni versions.” “The native bows are made from a wood, more similar to ash, but are just as effective. The hand weapons, the swords from the schematics we were sent are primitive, and rough, but useable.” “Simple, but effective, easy to forge. now that sounds familiar.” Dale sighed, replacing the bow back over her shoulder. “I know how busy you are, but I want a complete threat assessment by the time we get to Lertarni, No surprises.” (reply any) (Posted by Mark) (USS Hades, Holodeck 2 – ATAC Ensign Mil Nicolae – 2240) Mil moved around the man slowly, he sniffed the air as a fowl stench wafted across. The man was mid height with a dirty stock of hair and a rough beard, he didn't know how the crew would cope with the stench after being so used to the sterile conditions of the ship. The man was in an attack pose his mouth wide open and the yellow rotting teeth seemed to hide a wealth of disease, the skin covered in boils ~how do they even walk in this pain~ Mil thought as he moved to the work station. He had spent the last four hours in the holodeck training and altering images to try and get as close to the data as possible; time was against him and he knew that the crew would be arriving. Knowing this was mainly an unauthorised project he had spent time in between the sessions updating the models. Hopefully it would also give the crew a chance to deal with the horror, facing the ill kept face. "You're an ugly brute aren't you?" Mil asked the thin air knowing he wouldn't get much of an answer. "Computer, save changes to programme and close". The computer acknowledged by changing the room back to the grey hollow shell. Mil walked through the door and headed for a few hours sleep. (Reply none) (Posted by Mat Hodson) (USS HADES – Ten Forward – FO Lt Cmdr. Bracken & COUNS Ens. Anamitra Ripley – 2030) Dale slouched back in the seat that she occupied in a quiet corner of the ship’s bar. She was, abnormally out of uniform, wearing her normal exercise gear, gym trousers and one of her academy t-shirts from her days on the orbital drop team. Her nickname emblazoned across her shoulders, ‘LAB RAT’; all that seemed so long ago. Typically, no one bothered her when she was here, which normally she preferred. Recently though, she found herself feeling more lonely than normal. She drained her drink, and motioned to the barman, who brought her a replacement, a large glass of beer. Whereas it was her normal drink, this was something special. Back on Earth in the middle ages, the water was mostly undrinkable, two methods of purification were developed. In the Orient, they perfected the art of distillation, purification by boiling and distilling the water. In Europe, a different tack was taken. Water wasn’t drunk per se, only as a constituent of beer. All meals, breakfast included, where served with strong beer. Alcohol strengths could typically reach 9 percent, ferociously strong stuff. It was for that reason that Dale was getting her liver back into practice. At least, that was her official reason. The hidden one, the one that was known only to her, was that she was lonely, oh so terribly lonely. She sighed, and took a deep draught, and put the glass on the table just in front of her; she then picked up the PADD before her and read for a few seconds before her mind rebelled, she dumped it back on the table, and picked up her glass once more, deciding to allow the feelings of moroseness to was over her. What began to pull her round was the scent, a perfume that had in recent weeks begun to insinuate itself in her psyche, it was a scent, a perfume that always comforted her and centered her when she was out of sorts. She doubted that the owner of the perfume knew how Dale felt about it’s owner. Painfully, Dale thrust all those feelings back deep down, the air of professionalism, no, that wasn’t true, the air of close friendship. “Ana!” Dale raised her glass slightly, “Come,” she patted the seat next to her, “Come , sit, join me…” She laughed, “that’s an order from your Commander, Ensign..” Ana had been concerned for Dale for some time, since the mission parameters had been laid out in the briefing. There was a rampant disease running amok on a primitive world and truth be told, she was more worried about Dale's health and well-being than the overall success of the mission. That was a personal guilt that she would have to deal with, but it was the complete and startlingly clear truth. So, Ana had decided to go visit with Dale to try to persuade her of the foolishness of undertaking a mission with an unknown contagion doing it's best to decimate anything that got in the way. Of course, barring that success, Ana had another plan. So when the subject of her thoughts gave her a hearty rise of her beer glass as she entered Ten Forward, she raised a hand in return greeting. When Dale patted the seat next to her and practically ordered her to join her, Ana had no problems taking the indicated seat and following those orders. As she settled into the seat next to Dale, she flashed her a bit of a smile. "Something on your mind?" She asked. Dale smile at her taking the drink that the barman brought over and passed it to her. The smile lasted about a second, "You want to hear the truth Ana?" Speaking her name made her heart sink slightly. "I really don’t know." "Hmmm…" Ana responded, "Seems that you have something going on up there." She added, tapping the side of her own head to illustrate her point, "I know you Dale, you're brain is always churning over something. Sometimes, I even think you over think things too much." Before Dale could reply the waitress made it to the table, bringing Dale another tall mug of beer and looking at the Counselor asked if she wanted anything. "Herbal tea and some honey." she replied. The woman nodded and headed off to fulfill her request. "Is that real beer?" Ana finally asked, "I didn't think you cared for beer." Dale smiled, but nodded. “I do prefer red wine, but am partial to beer too; goes straight to the hips though.” Dale shifted in her seat slightly, her work brain not disengaging. “Thoughts on the mission?” "Oh, about that…" Ana began, "I know you're the first officer and everything, but I've been thinking a lot." ~about a lot of things.~ She paused and took the time to shift some stray locks of hair from her eyes, "And well… I've been thinking that we're going about this mission all wrong. I mean there's a pandemic on that planet. I think that before anyone goes down, we need to quantify, isolate and develop a serum to protect the away team. I know that the mission is time critical, but I don't see the point of sending down one or more teams to the surface and taking the chance that we're going to get infected and that someone could die. You realize we have no idea of the means of transmission? The onset period? The symptoms and stages? Or the incubation period of this disease? We don't know if it's viral, bacteriological or something else altogether. We don't have enough information to justify placing additional people in harm's way. In placing you in harm's way…" The sudden realization of what Ana had just said struck her like a ton of bricks. She hadn't planned on saying exactly that, but she had stated it none the less. The genie, as they say, was out of the bottle. “Say what you think Ana, please.” Dale smiled. Glad that her companion was able to speak her mind. “You’re right, mostly.” Dale took the younger woman’s hand, “You remember the oaths we swore to uphold? The needs of the many, Ana, outweigh the needs of the few.” She sighed, taking a deep drink, and taking Ana’s slender, petite hands once more. “I appreciate your concern for the team, we swore, we all swore those same oaths, to protect those that couldn’t protect themselves. Even those who won’t know we exist for what? Another thousand years? As to our health, yes, technically that’s the way we should go. You know what we have to do though, you know the importance of finding this scientist before he divulges, or is forced to divulge any kind of data. Even early firearms tech would change the course of history completely in this sector. That, Ana, is far, far more important than all of our lives put together. Even mine.” The speech was straight out the textbook, and she supposed that she had never considered the import of the meaning of it until now. Back in the academy, there was a standard essay, one that was set to all cadets. It was essentially on the true meaning on the Prime Directive. No-one, that she knew of, had ever received a grade higher than B+. At the time The young cadet 3 Bracken had questioned her grade, seeking to find explanation as to how it could be improved. “Time, Cadet Bracken. Time and time alone.” Commander T’kel’s words echoed to her from afar. “Only time will improve your understanding.” Time had passed, and cadet 3 Bracken, now Lieutenant Commander Bracken finally understood ~message receive Commander T’Kel, message received.~ "I understand that, it's just…" Ana paused, allowing the words to melt away. Dale took another large draught from her beer, before her brain nudged the rest of her. Ana’s previous sentences running through her mind, something slightly out of kilter, something out of…just out. Ana’s whole sentence, demeanor, body language, pupil dilation, came into the sudden focus of Dale’s highly considerable intellect. She had no doubt that Ana could see her thoughts. “Wait wait.” Ana looked up from the table top her mind still reeling from the emotions that were at odds here. She took a deep breath and said, "What?" “You said ‘…placing you in harm’s way.’” "I said 'the away team.'" Ana replied almost automatically. “No no, you said…’you’.” "Maybe I did," Ana replied with a shrug, trying hard to make it seem nonchalant, "I meant the collective you, not YOU." she replied a little nervously. “Anamitra Ripley, don’t you dare try and play coy with me.” She used her full name purposely, the first time she had ever done so. Ana looked up at Dale, gazing into those full liquid eyes and she finally broke. She sighed heavily and finally spoke. "Damn it I'm a counselor." She began, "I'm not supposed to make connections to the crew, not a single member. But you, Dale, you're… different. You're always on my mind somehow, and it makes me smile." She paused, breaking eye contact for the moment. "I could be clinical about it, I suppose, dissect it, like I do all the other emotional issues that I'm faced with, but I know the cause and I'm done pretending. It's tearing me up inside, and I'm more confused now than I've ever been in my entire life." She looked back up into Dale's eyes. "The truth is, Dale Bracken, I'm in love with you, for better or worse, that's just the way it is. And if you're going to insist on going planet side, then so am I. I'm qualified enough to handle the basic medical aspects of the mission and Doctor Krommes is pregnant, so she can not possibly be exposed. I don't want to let you out of my sight for one instant." Dale was truly shell-shocked, but she didn’t let go of Ana’s hands. Suddenly, so many things slipped into place in her mind. There had always been a friendship between them, Dale herself had found that friendship grow into something more; but she had always kept those feeling to herself. The irony of the fact that the only person that she could speak to was the person that she was having issues dealing with her feelings for. “Oh Ana. I know, somehow… I’ve… always known.” She’d been speaking quietly, softly, her voice carrying no further than her companion, looking directly into Ana’s eyes, seeing the look of resignation in them, and returning the look with one that hopefully would speak volumes. "You… You have?" Ana muttered, She hadn't really known herself until recently, or rather she hadn't confirmed that she knew, or some such nonsense. “Truth is Ana, There’s someone that I’m really attracted to, I think about this person all the time, She invades my dreams, intrudes on my waking thought. She’s not only a stunningly beautiful woman, but also has a heart of gold, is funny, and a truly lovely person.” "Oh, I see. There's someone else." Ana replied, her heart suddenly racing with the prospect of rejection. She gave Dale a nervous little smile and a short exasperated sigh. Dale sighed nervously herself, “and she’s sitting next to me, looking like a… scared deer, but she needn’t worry, because…” Dale sighed heavily, her grip on Ana’s hands petite, slender hands tightening “…because for better or worse all those feelings are entirely reciprocated.” It took a few moments for Dale's words to sink in and when they did, it was as if the entire universe became known to her. She felt the blood rush to her face, the sudden shortness of breath and the warmth gathering just beneath her collar. Ana hadn't been rejected at all, much to her startling surprise, the exact opposite had happened. Dale felt herself blush, her face no doubt scarlet. It had been a long time since she’d had this kind of conversation. “Anamitra,” she asked, suddenly feeling dry mouthed and shy. “Are you asking me out on a date?” "Uh…uumm." Ana stuttered for the first time in her life, trying hard to regain her balance, "Do you consider an exotic pre-industrial world to be a suitable location for a date?" She replied nervously, "Because I was talking about the away team… and …and… I'm not about to let you change the subject. If you do, then the answer to your question is yes. Otherwise I'll come up with something better suited a little later…" (reply none) (Posted by Mark Howard & Daniel Greene) -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mission: Witch Hunt Day: 2 Stardate: 2414.01.13 (USS Hades, Astronometric lab, COO Lieutenant H'retor - 0800)  Putting aside the operation team he was trying to mount in order to insure an efficient survey and operation control for the away mission, H'retor woke up with the objective of analyzing the binary system and it's effect. The data they were given access by starfleet intelligence were quite useful. H'retor has integrated them into the astrometric lab, so to have a visual representation of the system. However, it was a matter of general interest. It was better to team up with science and flight control. H'retor also contacted them. "H'retor to Ensign Doorman, and Ensign (NRPG: who is the flight control officer?). The binary system have some particular properties that would need some analysis and concerting. I don't intend to fail the captain or the away team. I am at the astrometric lab and I will be waiting for you." (Reply Doorman) H'retor was looking at the system and the rotation of the planet. The location of the research center was added to the planet to give H'retor an idea where would be send the away team. If he also entered the rotation of the planet, the moons and the two suns, H'retor still needed the science officer to check he had forgot anything, solar winds, planet core property or atmospheric property, etc. Truth was, despite he had a very good basis on science, that was far from the knowledge a science officer had, and he wouldn't let his ego get in the way of success.  (Posted by H'retor) (USS Hades - Main Engineering - ACEO Ensign Eoin Mac Liam - 08:01) Eoin strode into Engineering with a bit of an extra spring in his step; last night was a productive night and he was feeling good about himself. He had a PADD in his left hand, which he was lightly tapping against his right. As he rounded the corner into the main compartment, he made a beeline for Holland's office, and rang the doorchime. (reply Holland) Eoin walked into the office, and smiled. "Egunon, a shiauna." (reply Holland) "Sorry sir. I was up late last night working on a language analysis. That means 'good morning, sir' in the western dialect of Erdi Batuan, the language spoken in the region we're beaming down to. But don't worry, sir. I also finished my proposal for extra shielding for the universal translator." He handed the PADD over to the CEO. (reply Holland, any) (posted by Spencer) (USS Hades, Observation Lounge, CO Captain Eva Straton & MCO Major Kgrik, 1305) Earlier that morning Eva had sent a message to Commander Bracken, Lt. Trinin, andMajor Kgrik for them all to meet her in the Observation Lounge at 13:15 to discuss the upcoming away mission and who would be the best suited to be included in the away mission. With a PADD in one hand and a cut of iced herbal tea in the other, Eva moved to the head of the table and sat down. She had considered having this meeting in her Ready Room but in the end had decided that it would be more comfortable for everyone to use the Observation Lounge. Taking a sip of her tea, Eva once more started to read over the data on the PADD as she waited for the summoned officers to arrive. A few moments latter the door opened and Major Kgrik walked in. He nodded to the Captain before taking a seat. He was also carrying a PADD containing the name of every marine on board who he thought had skills that would benefit the away team. Kgrik bared his fangs as he looked over the names again. ~How I would love to go on the away team, but surgically altering my appearance is not appealing.~ he thought as he tapped the PADD and waited for the others to arrive. (NRPG: To save time, I am going to assume both Bracken and Trinin arrive shortly after Kgrik so that we can get things rolling on this.) RPG: (USS Hades, Observation Lounge, CSEC/CTAC Lieutenant Baylon Trinin, 1312) Baylon stepped into the Observation lounge carrying a PADD in his left hand and with a stride that told people he was on a mission. He nodded at the assembled officers and then moved to take his normal seat in preparation of the beginning of the mission briefing. Bracken arrived just a short while later and settled into her own chair. Once everyone was settled, the Captain kicked off the meeting, "I would like to get the composition of the away team decided, so that we can begin to focus our training on those that will be going to the surface," She said looking at each of them. "I would like to hear your recommendations first." The Marine CO, Kgrik rose and began his recommendation, "I have comprised a list of all marines who have skills that I think may prove of benefit to the away team," He said. He tapped a few commands on his PADD and transmitted the list of names to the others in the room. "As this isn't exactly what we train for as marines, I recommend that all marines serve as guards or hired swords. The names I have highlighted could also serve as field medics to tend to any wounds that may come up." Baylon took a quick look at the names on the list provided and gave it a satisfactory nod of approval, before rising to his own feet. "Sirs, " he began, " After review, we have several security personnel who have expertise with hand-to-hand combat, but I'm hesitant to include them because they are masters of styles completely alien to this world, which could easily contaminate this culture if they were forced to defend themselves. However, I was asked to include a complete list, and so here it is…" Baylon tapped a pair of buttons on his PADD sending the first list to the gathered officers. "you will note that I have highlighted personnel who have a more rough-and-ready fighting style over those with more refined experience. This is an attempt to isolate potential contamination, should it be necessary for us to defend ourselves, which at this stage I feel is likely." "On this second list, I have assembled personnel with weapons skills that would be suitable for our away mission. Once again, if the weapon was exotic, I purposefully graded the election low, if similar in some regards to the weapons found on the planet, they received a much higher rating and therefore have a greater value on the mission, from a Prime Directive standpoint." "Despite these parameters, several security personnel stand out to me as being necessary to the mission. "Dragovar, Nicolae, Myself, and at least three other security people as well. I've focused my efforts on the security department for the most part, but I can not help but notice that you, captain, are also qualified, by your own definition." He forwarded the second list. (reply Straton iyw) "I do have some important recommendations concerning equipment. It is my stern recommendation that no personal weapons of any sort, no matter how closely they resemble the native weapons be allowed on the away team. In fact, we should only use those replicated to the exacting standards of the samples scanned by the cultural observation teams and recreated by the replicator. The equipment should not be new looking, and it should show signs of use. Additionally no armor beyond that worn by peasants or low ranking mercenaries should be permitted either. Although I would like to suggest that the materials be treated with nano-polymer tubes for added strength, which would be undetectable for thousands of years as well as being biodegradable, so any odds of potential samples surviving long enough to be detected, would be extremely unlikely." "In addition, if we are to use multiple away teams, I would suggest at least one Betazoid per team, as their ability to make contact with the ship or each other would not be affected by the relative radiation levels in the upper atmosphere of the planet." "Because of my focus on security personnel, I leave it to commander Bracken and yourself, Captain, to determine the remaining composition of the away team or teams." (Reply Bracken, Kgrik, Straton) Daniel Greene (USS Hades - Observation Lounge - FO LtCmdr Bracken 1315)   "Because of my focus on security personnel, I leave it to Commander Bracken and yourself, Captain, to determine the remaining composition of the away team or teams."   Dale nodded, and took her cue.   “Sir,” She addressed Straton, “I have a couple of easy recommendations, and a major concern.”   “Firstly, Lieutenant Holland has put a lot of work into preparing for this mission, I’ve no major concern in putting his name forward for an away team, Other than whatever duties may call for his remaining on ship as CEO. Similarly Ensign MacLiam, whose linguistic skills could prove useful.”   Dale also listed the appropriate officers on her PADD, sending notes and brief bio’s to the other officers in the room.   “Any now we reach my concerns. As to Science, I can cover that, or part of it if there’s to be two teams. I can also recommend another Officer or two to provide backup in the case of more than one team. Whereas Ensign Doorman is an exceptional Officer, who has proved his mettle, his skills would better serve remaining aboard the Hades running the Science Department in my absence in assisting Medical in analysing the plague on Lertarni.” Dale lowered her PADD into her lap.   “which brings me to my major concern. Medical.”   Dale looked at each of the officers in the room. “Captain, medical is going to be stretched to the maximum, perhaps beyond that. Normally I’d immediately recommend Ensign Krommes as part of the team, she’d shown herself to be a valuable member of the crew, but, for obvious reasons feel that her safety and that of her child has to come first. Our other ACMO, Ensign Ptaquiloside, gifted surgeon, completely untrained as a field medic. Both are better off remaining on board ship working on the plague.” Dale lifted her PADD, and sent details of a couple of other officers.   “Junior medics, one or two of whom, actually show some promise as Field Medics.” She turned to the Captain, “Sir, there is also Ensign Ripley, who has received all basic medical training qualifying her as a Field Medic. There is however an issue, which I need to speak to you in private about.”   (Reply Trinin, Kgrik, Straton) (Posted by Mark) (USS Hades, Observation Lounge, CO Captain Eva Straton & MCO Major Kgrik, 13:16) When everyone had arrived, Eva called the meeting to order. ` "I would like to get the composition of the away team decided, so that we can begin to focus our training on those that will be going to the surface," She said looking at each of them. She looked over the PADD in front of her with all the data. She scrolled through the data not looking up from the PADD. Several moments later, Eva tapped in a series of command on the conference table top and brought the built in holo-projectors to life. Lertain IV appeared above the table and then quickly zoomed in to the mountainous and densely forested area around the scientific outpost. A blue dot started to blink indicating the location of the Federation outpost. "This is where the Federation out post is located," Eva explained, as she tapped in another command. A long winding yellow line appeared on the holographic display. "This is the only major trade route in the area. Little more than a large dirt track, it's what servers as a road on this world. Assuming our missing scientist's captors carried her away, they would most likely use this road." Another series of commands entered and a series of red dots appeared on the projection. "These are the known cities, towns, villages, or dwellings of the indigenous population. Commander Bracken, you will take a team and move north along the trade route looking for any information on our missing scientist. Lt. Trinin, you will be a part of Commander Brackens team. I will take a second team and move south along the same trade route doing the same. Once we have found of the trail of our missing scientist, we can use the cloaked shuttle to move in the second team to help finish tracking down her location and devising a way to get her back to the ship." Eva lifted her PADD and divided the names on it into two teams. She then sent the list to the other three. "This will be the break down of the two search teams," Eva explained. "Commander Bracken you will post this team breakdown for those involved and let them know what role they will be filling in each team." "Major Kgrik, you will inform the marines on the list of their assignment. You will also be joining Commander Bracken's team. You will need to arrange a time with medical to have your appearance altered so that you can pass as a local." Kgrik simply nodded, looking at the list that had appeared on his screen. "If there is nothing else," Eva said, "Then I suggest we all get busy." (Reply Bracken, Trinin, Any) (Posted by Wes) (USS HADES – Ten Forwards – ATAC Tallac Dragovar - 1712)   Dragovar nursed a coffee as he watched footage from the scientific team on his padd.   The scene was a skirmish between a local militia and a group of raiders, who had a base camp in a local wooded area.   The militia used large, rectangular shields, similar to Roman Scutum, and employed similar tactics. The testudo was used to devastating effect to cover the open ground, the arrows and rocks thrown by the raiders bounced off. The shields were made of aged wood, covered by a blue dyed leather cover. Each man carried a long double headed spear, two points like a pitchfork. Also a sword, around 2 foot blade, with a basic T hilt. The officers seemed to carry a variety of weapons, and smaller shields   “Excellent tactics, good discipline amongst the soldiers.” He noted into a small recorder. The skirmishers from the raiders broke from cover and used re-curved bows, around 4ft in length to fire arrows at the exposed shins of the militia, trying to trip the tortoise over. “Use of re-curved bows, and barbed tips on the arrows.”   The bows used by the raiders were compact, but very powerful   He zoomed to a particular spot, as one man towards the back of the formation was nicked by an arrow. The man took a few more steps, then dropped to the floor and convulsed. He selected on the the arrows that misses and zoomed into the tip of the arrow. A groove was clear, with a thick, black liquid smeared on it. “Poison arrows?” That added a whole new, and nasty dimension to the mission. He typed a few commands and found the answer he was looking for in the Federation historical database. “Put a top covering on our shields made of silk, or the nearest equivalent on the planet. This will help in preventing arrows from passing through the shield.” That lesson was learned by heavy losses of arrows passing through shields and the poisoned tips scratching soldiers.   “Speak to medical staff at the outpost, try to see if they either have a sample, or can advise as to the poison used.” He dictated. “Consult medical staff to obtain antidote if possible. Poison affected a native within 10 seconds.”   He made more notes on the armour, mainly chainmail for the enlisted men, officers had some metal plates, mainly over the chest, forearms and lower legs.   Behind the testudo came a group of archers, who used longbows, 5ft 6 to 6ft in length. Very powerful and capable of punching an arrow through a centimetre thick armour plate at half a kilometre. The arrows used also had barbs, which worsened any wound made by them by being very difficult to remove.   He turned to the raiders and their equipment. They carried a wide variety of weapons, curved scimitar style blade, short swords and axes. All weapons were for confined spaces, possibly sea-faring pirates he noted idly.   “All of my weapons I have ear-marked for the mission are fine to take, as there are similar enough weapons in use, and the construction would only be considered very high quality, not brand new or different” He dictated. “Possible cover story of mercenary or body guard would justify the possession of these weapons.   He re-watched the clip, this time concentrating on the style of fighting used. As he had come to expect, the militia was very organised and obviously trained to fight, They punched forward with their large shields, then stab with the short swords.   He parked the thought and turned to the raiders for their style. Predictably wild and un-orthodox . It became effective only once the Militia broke from the Testudo and began to engage the raider hand to hand. The sheer force of the raiders attacks broke through the defence of some of the soldiers.   Through the disciple and training the militia won the day, casualties were around 150 raiders dead, about the same wounded and captured. Only a dozen soldiers lay dead.   Dragovar drained his coffee, and looked over the notes he had been taking while watching the clips.   As he read over his notes, a thought began to gnaw at the back of his mind. Almost every thing noted against the planets militia he had compared to Roman tactics, equipment and training   “I wonder if I should mention this to the captain.” He muttered out loud. “Better safe than sorry.”   =/\= Ensign Dragovar to Captain Straton =/\=   (reply Straton)   =/\= I’ve found something really strange from the planet, that I would like to show you. =/\=   (reply Straton) (Posted by Tim) (USS Hades, Holodeck 2, CSEC/CTAC Lieutenant Baylon Trinin, 2200) Baylon arrived outside the holodeck to find a program already running. He quickly checked the inhabitants of the holodeck and noting that it was Dragovar and Nicolae, he decided to activate himself as an observer and step into the simulation so that he could observe. It didn't take him long to hear the sounds of the battle being fought between his two security men and the holographic natives of Lertani IV. he was arriving right at the end of the sparring match and judging by the level of detail Baylon felt that the two had done an amazing job of developing a life-like simulation that would help the away team, blend in better. As the last of the holographic opponents fell, Baylon spoke up. "This looks very impressive gentlemen." he said with some pride in his voice. "The level of detail is very exact. Which of you would like to give me a run down on what you've done here?" (reply Dragovar, Nicolae) Daniel Greene (USS Hades, Quarters, SciO Ensign Harry Doorman, 2300) Harry reached up and pinched the bridge of his nose between the forefinger and thumb of his right hand. The action was more a means to express frustration rather than physical discomfort. For the last several hours he had been looking at the way viruses, infections and other contagions spread. While not a medical professional, Harry believed fully that all things in the universe could be defined and therefore understood by mathematics. The problem with something like viral vectoring and bacteriological dispersion patterns was that the data points were inconsistent. This could be caused by any number of reasons, unreported outbreaks of contacts between infected and newly infected subjects, poorly defined conditions, such as temperature, humidity, airflow or even sexual activity, or in some cases primitive or non-existent data to begin with. Harry had thought that perhaps he could work up a few different models for predicting and perhaps treating, through inference of transmission methods, the disease that was currently working it's way across the surface of Lertani IV. Of course the treatments wouldn't be used for the inhabitants, but it would help the away team to avoid the higher risk areas and scenarios whenever possible, and it could help identify and thereby isolate the cause of the outbreak, minimizing the chances that a member of the away team would contract the disease in the first place. As he sat there, alternately squeezing and releasing the tensions on the bridge of his nose, he attempted to visualize the patterns as mathematical curves, plot points and graphs. It was a tough thing to do with the best of data, with the almost non-existent data from Lertani IV, it was fundamentally impossible. The margins of error were just too high. He released his grip one last time and opened his eyes, allowing the images of mathematical supremacy to fade into the distant recesses of his imagination. His eyes travelled back once more to the reports that had been sent to the Hades from the scientific observation post on the planet. Why, he wondered, had they not been interested in performing more intricate studies on this pandemic? Had they thought it that insignificant that is garnered no real attention for the scientific teams there? Had they not foreseen a possibility that a member of their own away team could conceivably become infected and thus put them all at risk? Could they be that arrogant that they had dismissed it outright, or was it somehow being concealed? Could it be something that could have originated off-world, and therefore with the scientific research team itself? Harry shook his head slowly from side-to-side. He couldn't really believe that any federation scientist, would knowingly or willingly hide such information. he had to believe that perhaps the virus had not yet been given a high priority for some other reason, a reason that had not yet made itself known. Once a sample was procured, then things could move forward with figuring out transmission, resistance and fatality. Only then could they truly determine whether a mathematical model could be created to help the away team predict and thereby avoid contamination. Harry stood and stretched. He glanced over at the chronometer. With a frown, he intoned, "Computer lights out." The room plunged into near darkness and Harry made his way to his bedroom to undress and prepare for sleep. Mission: Witch Hunt Day 3 Stardate: 2414.01.15 (USS Hades, Quarters, ATAC Ensign Mil Nicolae 1359) Mil was preparing for the up coming mission, the last few days had been hard, the training on the holodeck followed by the research to prevent any surprises had taken it toll and he felt a little rushed, but full of energy. Looking around the quarters Mil ticked up a few PADDs and a weapon, he needed to get his clothing and was then planning to practise fully dressed; he rubbed his nose bridge and stopped in the middle of the room. "Oh nuts!" Exclaiming as he ran to the mirror. Staring into the mirror Mil rubbed his ridges at the top of his nose "better get to sick bay" dropping the PADD and such Mil left. (USS Hades, Sickbay, ATAC Ensign Mil Nicolae 1409) Striding into Sickbay Mil noted a few of the trainees with cuts and bruises from the holodeck training. Marching up to a green woman he spoke "Doctor, I'm here for my modification" Mil let out a laugh "not too sure if its for the better or not!" "I've not really had the chance to talk to you since you arrived on board, where do you want me?" A smile crossed over the young doctors face. "Right this way." "Ok, lead the way!" Soo-kara stopped in front of an exam room. "Right in here Ensign." She walked into the room behin the man. "Have a seat."   (Reply Nicolae)   Looking at the PADD with Ensign Nicolae's medical history on it the young doctor sighed. "Well Ensign. We are trying a combination of a few things to try and keep you and the other away team members safe from this plague or virus whatever it may be. Are you allergic to any medicines?"   (Reply Nicolae)   "We are going to be using a  broadrange of different vaccines to see if they may help along with some antibiotics to kill any form of virus your body may be harbouring that we are unaware of yet. Any questions?" The doctor looked at him inquisitively.   (Reply Nicolae) (Posted by Sheena) (USS Hades – Sickbay – FO LtCmdr Bracken – 1812)     Dale strode into sickbay, her thoughts still fully on the mission; smaller and smaller details crossing her mind, one of the most recent of which had led her here. She spied one of the medics across the room, and made her way to her. “Ensign Ptaquiloside, I wonder if I could bother you for a few moments. I have one or two…issues that need addressing.” The tall, dark haired Doctor turned to look at her, “Of course Commander,” she motioned toward an anteroom, currently empty. “Come, let’s have some privacy.” Dale followed the Doctor into the adjoining room, hearing the door close behind her. “Issues Commander?” Carena spoke, comfortably, a professional, reassuring smile on her face. “You’re aware of course of the mission, and the need for…everything to appear normal?” Dale spoke, her mind unable to supply the correct words, something was crossing her mind once more, but her brain at the moment would not supply it. “Of course Sir, we’ve had a couple of people through our doors already.” Carena stepped over to the door, and hit a couple of buttons that closed the doors, and turned the glass in them opaque, providing privacy. Dale nodded a thanks, and pulled her uniform off, leaning on the biobed in her underwear. “Two small issues, and a question.” Carena saw one of them immediately, an appendectomy scar on the Commander’s lower abdomen. She dropped to her knees in front of Dale. “Wow, haven’t seen one of these since…” a look of confusion shot across her face. “When have I seen an appendectomy scar before. Books probably.” Dale smiled, “that’s one, and the question. If you remove the scar, can you put it back?” She saw the puzzled expression on Carena’s face. “Long story, I’ll tell you one day when we have leisure,”   Carena frowned slightly, thinking. “I’m not certain, in theory, the dermal regenerator is only used to regenerate good tissue, not scar tissue” she ran her finger over the small, wrinkled scar. “I could store the image of the scar and reprogram I to turn good tissue into a new scar. I do want to hear the reason before I purposely give you a scar though.” Dale nodded “that sounds fair.” She turned to her left, showing the tattoo on her left shoulder blade. “This is the other.” Carena smiled. “That’s easy; and you can always get re-inked if you want.” She ran her fingers over the tattoo. “Nice detail. I’ve seen this before, but I can’t think where from…I went out with a marine once, but he was from Combat Engineering, not Elite. Ex Dolus Virtus.” She read the motto. “From Guile, Power. Elite Pathfinders.” Dale translated. Carena nodded, puzzled. “I knew that, Marine latin stays with you I suppose.” She picked up a Dermal regenerator, and slowly ran it over the skin, encouraging the cells to absorb and metabolise the normally permanent ink. Moments later, it had gone. She then moved back to Dale’s abdomen, looking at her in the eye before starting. “You sure Sir? We could possibly hide it somehow.”   Dale shook her head. “No Ensign, carry on, let’s not take any chances. We’ll see later if I want you to put it back.” Carena nodded, understanding the Commander’s sentiment, it was sometimes difficult to let go of something, and once one had, was even harder to grasp it again. A few short seconds later, the scar had gone, and for the first time in 25 years, her abdomen was completely devoid of blemish. “Thank you Ensign Ptaquiloside” She pulled her uniform back on. “Anytime Commander, if there’s anything else, you know where we are.” Dale nodded a simple answer, then something else crossed her mind. “How goes the research into the plague?” Immediately she knew a nerve had been hit, a look of disgust flashed across Carena’s face. “Hmmph. You’ll forgive me Sir, but we’d know more if the imbecelles in the obs station were in anyway familiar with symptom analysis. We’ve got almost nothing. A simple list is about all, headaches, sneezing sweating that kind of thing.” “So…” Dale would confess that she knew little about this kind of thing. “So how long did each take to appear, how severe was the patient? How is it transmitted? What actually kills them? We don’t even know what it is. Most likely we won’t until you and the away teams get us some samples.” “Understood Ensign,” She clapped the taller woman on the shoulder. “We’ll do our best. Thank you again.” She turned away once more, and exited sickbay, another thing on her mind (Reply any, none) (posted by Mark) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- End Compile
