He couldn't help thinking, as he walked toward the turbolift that he hadn't seen Henri all day, but after the what had happened with the chief yesterday, it was no wonder the Frenchman had taken the day off. He bit his lower lip and his thoughts changed from his friend to somebody else. He slipped his PADD out of his pocket and scribbed a note on it quickly. Ana, When you're off duty, wanna meet me in ten forward? Kusto. It was a short note, really, but he figured it got the point across without interfering too much if she was still working. With a smile he sent it, and then stepped into the turbolift. (posted by Justine) ===================================================================== (USS Hades - Deck 1, Main Bridge - CTAC Lt. Ammon Ranae - 1203) The Ambassador had arrived on the Bridge, having been summoned by the First Officer. Once it was verified that Nelvana III Embassy was standing by awaiting Ambassador Nolan, Cdr. Lemar gave a quick nod toward the Horta and the viewscreen immediately blipped into action to switch to a split screen view. The left of the screen was brightly lit, and an elderly human male was sitting there smiling at the screen. On the right of the screen was darker, the lights being dimmer by comparison and the colors darker. There was a stern faced Romulan female staring back at them. She looked like there was a bad smell under her nose. From her tactical station, Ranae observed both the split viewscreen and the people on the Bridge. "My name is Ambassador Jericho Nolan." The Ambassador introduced himself. The human male nodded and told him that his name was Javen Gill and he was the proprietor of the embassy on Nelvana III. The Romulan female indifferently informed them that her name was T'Nar. ~A right misery guts, she is.~ Ranae thought, continuing to watch the proceedings with glances back at her controls and scanner data every now and then. She heard the Ambassador explain that the Hades was about to cross into the Neutral Zone, on a course to Romulus, and his request that the Star Empire be notified. The Romulan, T'Nar gave Ambassador Nolan a scathing look. ~Obviously one of the unfriendlier Rommies.~ =^= Your presence has been anticipated, although you are running later than we expected. =^= T'nar raised an eyebrow, before looking briefly off screen and with her left hand accessed a computer console beside her. Then she proceeded to transfer some waypoint coordinates and course corrections for the ship to adhere to while traversing the Neutral Zone, and into Romulan space. ~I wonder what they are afraid we would discover if we diverted from their set course?~ Ranae wondered, noting that the woman was now looking directly at the Captain. What she said next brought a scowl to Ranae's face and raised her proverbial hackles. It was nothing short of an insult to them all as far as she was concerned, and her top lip curled back from her teeth a little but she refrained from snorting. She glared at the Romulan and her hands tightened into fists as she waited for Sash to reply. She was certain that he wouldn't bite the bait. =^= I trust that your officers are capable of following these instructions, Captain? =^= (reply: Sash) =^= You MUST NOT deviate from this course once you leave Federation space. Your vessel will be monitored closely, and any deviation from that course may be treated as an act of aggression by the Star Empire. Is that understood, Captain? =^= Ranae turned her attention back to her station readouts, it wouldn't do for her to let the Romulan woman see her anger at the blatantly insulting and disrespectful behavior she was displaying. ~Oh I'd like to meet with you sometime in a dark alley, I'd teach you some darned manners!~ (posted by Sal) ===================================================================== (USS Hades - Deck 1, Main Bridge - Lieutenant Ardena Carrow - 1205) She hadn't come up with an official excuse yet to avoid the meetings with the diplomatic team, but alpha shift on the bridge sounded like a good one to her when the rotation had come up. Normally she wasn't one to spend time on the bridge. There were officers who got a great deal of enjoyment out of being at the brain of the ship, surrounded by command opportunities. She wasn't one of them. She preferred to be a scientist first and a member of the military second. And yes, while every organization needed structure, leadership and organization, that didn't mean she wanted to be in the middle of a group of people who were all leaning towards that centre chair. She wouldn't mind having command on a small science vessel someday - but this big war ship? No thank you. Best those who wanted it had it, she would lead her scientists and do her part for mission and harmony. Which at this point, was mostly avoiding a group of diplomats who seemed to be more about judging the world around them than trying to learn about new peoples and cultures and present them to their own. Wasn't being a diplomat about establishing harmony? So far, as she'd seen was dissent. She was amused by the chief of operations' whimsy and humour, finding some of her own crankiness ebb away in the face of playfulness. The Romulan representative was either a test of patience, a test of determination, or a cranky bureaucrat who had been tossed out to a far outpost to stop getting up the nose of her superiors. Ardena was glad she was neither Captain nor Ambassador, since she wouldn't have resisted wrinkling her nose in mock confusion and asking if the Romulan's translators were working correctly since she seemed to be repeating herself. Oh, this mission should just be so much FUN. Hair-trigger security agents on both side, dealing with people who didn't trust the other, several who were trying to provoke the other, and both teams, obviously possessing members who didn't agree, didn't respect and didn't like. She briefly wondered if she could bribe the Captain's Yeoman into changing her job title to "Chief Botanist" and hiding out in the arboretum. Of course, she'd probably fret, worry, and start organizing the peas into rows in boredom. Probably best where she was with the job she was, no matter how much she questioned Starfleet's wisdom in placing her here. (Posted by Lorna) ===================================================================== (USS Hades - Deck 8, Counseling Offices - ACOUNS Anamitra Ripley - 1205) Ana had just completed her notes from her last counseling session for the day. Another PTSD case, coupled with a condition of holodeck addiction to a family simulation. It was a tough case, and one that Ana would have to deal with gingerly. The young Engineer had lost her husband in the battle for sector 001, and now rather than moving forward, she allowed her grief to rule her life. She had resorted to spending her free time in the holodeck where she repeatedly replayed the holoimages of a past shore leave where she had spent time with her husband. It was a sad thing. It was apparent that they had been very much in love, and now he was gone and she was drifting restlessly in a sea of grief and conflicting emotions. Her condition had begun to affect her work, she had withdrawn from her friends and it had been one of those friends, spurred on by the recent loss of ensign Stanton that had brought the situation to Ana's attention. The session was over for the moment, but Ana had insisted on a daily schedule. She didn't want to leave the woman alone for any extended length of time. She even made arrangements for a female friend to share quarters with the recent widow. She reached out and tapped the button on her desk that lowered the monitor. Ana wasn't certain what she'd say to the woman tomorrow. But she felt confident that she would be helping her. There was a chirp as her monitor indicated that she had a new message. With a slight sigh, she jabbed the button to raise her monitor and open the latest message. It read: [Ana, When you're off duty, wanna meet me in ten forward? Kusto.] Ana smiled. It was just the thing that she needed to keep her own spirits up. She quickly checked her schedule and decided to put a few of the crew reviews off until tomorrow. With a bright smile she sent Kusto a message back. [I'd love to! Seems I'm free for the rest of the day, when do you want to meet?] Ana hoped that Kusto would reply sooner rather than later. The very thought of spending time with him was thrilling. They hadn't seen much of each other since the awkward trip to Bajor, that had ended in disaster when Ana was recalled to the ship after only a couple of days. She'd insisted that Kusto stay and visit his brother while she returned to the Hades. They had of course spoken, and had a few meals together, but their schedules clashed somewhat and that made things a little difficult to arrange. Still, she liked Kusto, and was very happy that he still wanted to see her. She sent the message and watched the monitor with rapt attention. As he looked around he saw Ambassador Nolan step out of the Turbolift and step briskly over to Jonas Lemar. Nolan's demeanor indicated obvious excitement and anticipation at getting ready to do the job he had been assigned. Ambassador Nolan and Cmdr Lemar spoke and then the star panorama changed to a split screen with a Romulan woman and an older male approximately around the Ambassador's age. Clearly the human was in charge of the embassy on Nelvana III and the frosty Romulan woman was part of the welcome wagon. Listening and watching the screen, Jon noted that Javen Gill's smiling face matched his aura and he did not appear to be under duress. The Romulan who identified herself as T'Nar appeared angry and annoyed and her aura showed that. There were no inconsistencies between what she said and what she projected. John was happy that the work he had done correlating Romulan speech with their auras seemed to have worked out well. The Ambassador said pleasantly, "Our ship is about to cross into the Neutral Zone, on a course to Romulus. Please inform the Star Empire of our intentions." =^=Your presence has been anticipated, although you are running later than we expected.=^= She raised an eyebrow, before looking briefly off screen and with her left hand accessed a computer console beside her. =^=I am transferring to you a set of waypoint coordinates and course corrections that you must adhere to during your journey through the Neutral Zone, and into Imperial space. =^= Addressing Captain Sash she said, =^=I trust that your officers are capable of following these instructions, Captain?=^= (Reply Devon Sash) ~This appears to be the posturing behavior that the opposition has chosen before they talk to another tribe. But it does not make it any less dangerous. They have had over three centuries of hate directed toward the Federation.~ =^=You MUST NOT deviate from this course once you leave Federation space. Your vessel will be monitored closely, and any deviation from that course may be treated as an act of aggression by the Star Empire. Is that understood, Captain?=^= ~She is not speaking facetiously, Great Spirit.~ Jon hoped the Captain would not let the Romulan's demeanor intimidate or anger him. Jon waited to see what how the Captain would respond. (Posted by Jim McCrary) ===================================================================== (USS Hades – Deck 1, Main Bridge – Commander Lemar, Captain Sash & Ambassador Nolan - 1208) After a brief acknowledgement from the Captain, Jonas turned back to the viewscreen to await both the Ambassador and Captain to arrive on the bridge. He couldn’t resist the sense of anticipation that was awash over him. This was only the first step on their journey, but he found himself quite excited by the prospect, in spite of the dangers. As he began to wonder what the people of the Nelvana III embassy were like, the Horta Lieutenant in front shifted slightly with a view to turning in his direction slightly and asked, “Sir, should I be on the Bridge when the Romulans have our Bridge on visual or do you just want them to be gobsmacked by my good looks?” There was a wave of his phalange briefly, before it landed on the side edge of his console. Jonas could hear other officers letting loose light chuckles at the Horta’s remarks, and Jonas too smiled and such a comment. “I don’t think that will be necessary Lieutenant. And besides, I think you’re a little low for the viewer. I shouldn’t think they’ll notice you.” “Scans are all clear,” came a brief report from Lieutenant Ammon, to which Jonas acknowledged only with a quick nod in her direction. Moments later a door opened off to the starboard side somewhere and out stepped the Captain. Jonas smiled over at him, stepping away from the command seat and allowing his superior to take up the position. The Captain waved his hand in refusal as if to say, ‘Keep it’. “Are we ready Commander?” asked Sash, already knowing that his FO would have everything under control. Jonas returned to the command seat and nodded, indicated toward the forward positions. “Lieutenant Maraht has the embassy on the line and we’re just waiting for the Ambassador.” Then, as if the very mention of his title had made him appear, the main corridor doors opened to admit Ambassador Nolan. As he approached he said, “Commander, you asked for me?” Jonas smiled and stood up from the seat again. This time he decided he was going to keep standing. He didn’t feel quite right being the only one sitting down while both the Captain and Ambassador were standing there. “Yes Ambassador. We’re approaching the Neutral Zone, and I felt it better if you made contact with the Nelvana embassy personally. I was uncertain if there would be any Romulan contact.” After a few brief comments, Maraht opened the channel and two people appeared on the viewscreen. One looked to be human, while the other was clearly Romulan. “My name is Ambassador Jericho Nolan,” started Nolan with his introductions. The human diplomat seemed the friendly type, but the Romulan was defiantly giving a frosty reception. ~I hope this isn’t a taste of what’s to come~ Jonas thought as the Ambassador continued on, not letting a little Romulan bad attitude stop him in his tracks. “Our ship is about to cross into the Neutral Zone, on a course to Romulus. Please inform the Star Empire of our intentions.” Nolan spoke in his usually friendly tone, almost as if he hoped it would rub off on the Romulan in some way. There was no such luck. =^= Your presence has been anticipated, although you are running later than we expected. =^= She appeared to raise an eyebrow, before looking briefly off screen and with her left hand accessed a computer console beside her. =^= I am transferring to you a set of waypoint coordinates and course corrections that you must adhere to during your journey through the Neutral Zone, and into Imperial space. =^= The woman then looked away from Nolan, and directly at Captain Sash. =^= I trust that your officers are capable of following these instructions, Captain? =^= As Jonas looked over at the Captain, he was staring at the screen with an unshaken resolve. “My officers are some of the most capable in the fleet” replied the Captain, no emotion, no annoyance, no nothing in his voice. He was clearly unimpressed by the Romulan so-called diplomat. =^= You MUST NOT deviate from this course once you leave Federation space. Your vessel will be monitored closely, and any deviation from that course may be treated as an act of aggression by the Star Empire. Is that understood, Captain? =^= “Perfectly,” replied the Captain simply. “Rest assured, we will stick to your requested course.” The woman seemed happy at the submission of the Federation Captain. Somehow she had expected a little more feistiness, but it seemed she was getting nothing today. =^= Very well. I will inform my Praetor of your intention =^= Then without anything further, she was gone, and the screen was filled with image of the Federation counterpart, Javen Gill. =^= You’ll have to excuse her Captain. She is normally quite amiable. =^= Nolan laughed, “I think she was actually one of the more pleasant of her race,” he said, looking over at the Captain. Jonas couldn’t help but smile at that. Was this the first time he had noticed the ambassador doing something other than praising the Romulans? =^= Well, I hope you have a good trip. Good luck. =^= “Thank you Javen Gill, but I don’t think luck will have much say.” Nolan smiled and bid farewell to Javen briefly before the screen went blank, shortly to be replaced by the starscape. Jonas then took centre stage once more. “Lieutenant Guarastine, have you received Romulan instructions?” (reply: Guarastine) “Very well,” started Jonas, “Increase speed to Warp 7, then adjust course and speed as you see fit.” (posted by Dave) ===================================================================== (USS Hades – Deck 10, Sickbay – CMO Angeni O. Windsong-Trommashere - 1209) Angeni sat quietly at her computer, her eyes blood-shot and tired. Her mind was going a mile a minute, when it suddenly hit her. "Computer. Set up a model of a human female, no medical problems." The computer chirped in response, and on her display was a wire figure of a human female. She set in the age parameters and she pondered for a moment. She pulled out her padd, ready to go at this. "Now, give the model a dose of Orphan Drug Alpha Theta at .25 micrograms. Highlight systems that show any effect." She waited a moment, going back to something she had learned what seemed like years ago. To her, she wouldn't be able to rest...well... until the mystery had been solved. She noted that even at .25mcg's, the CNS and the Respiratory system showed marked effect. ~.25 is not even close to the normal Fentanyl dosage at between 50-150mcgs.~ What she noticed though suprised her. While they showed effect, the effect went away pretty quickly. She noted the time laps, and realized that the half life was very short, almost as short as Versed. Five minutes and it was already reducing its hold on the body, yet it lingered in nerves. She increased the lapse, noting that it took another eight hours for the nerves to become 'normal' again. She increased the dosage in .25mcg incriments, and she kept seeing the same result; elongated CNS Respiratory depression, but between 8 and 12 hours of nerve blockage. One thing didn't make sense; even with the depression, it wasn't enough to cause chest wall rigidity...unless... "Computer, use Leesa Stanton as a model for this experiment." The computer screen flickered for a moment, then she noticed the wire form looked similar to Miss Stanton. She began at .25mcgs, and noticed that the drug had little to no effect on the model. No depression, no blockage until she hit a full milligram. The respiratory system started flashing red, the readout stating severe depression. She followed the chart, noting that the model, if it were breathing, would only be taking six to eight breaths a minute, the heart rate slowing down to a mere fourty beats a minute; enough to keep someone alive, but barely. She noted the minimal amount of nerve blocking; it seemed like the woman had grown a tollerance to the drug to the point of it not affecting the proper system. ~She must have kept upping the dose until she took way too much and it shut her systems down!~ She followed the model through until it hit five milligrams. The heart, lungs, and brain completely stopped working. The drug had started blocking nerves again, but it went all over her body; vagus nerve was stimulated to the point that the heart slowed down to nill, chest wall had gone completely still, and her CNS had gone dark. It was if her entire body had fallen asleep at the same time. She downloaded the data onto a padd, and she pondered over the padd for a moment. She could have, very easily, gone to Captain Sash about the new insight, leaving everyone else in the dust. It was only a hunch she had performed the experiemnt anyways. Ser had probably already done something similar for all she knew. Part of her felt like she had been left in the dust by this new doctor. Angeni was all too familiar with the fast paced world of medicine; she started off in Emergency Medicine. She knew how to kick it into warp drive when she needed to; she also knew when to let things work out on their own. This was one of those times when she wished she had the bay all to herself. This whole investigation from the medical stand point could've gone exactly the way she wanted it to; now the bay was filled with three equally deserving doctors who had three completely different styles of medicine; One was far advanced, one was in the middle, and the other, while being knowledgeable in the new way of doing things, appreciated the finer points of the old school methods. She uploaded the data back onto her computer in a data file, and she sent it off to Ser's computer, leaving a note with it: 'Just ran a simulation. Check this out about the Orphan Drug we found. I talked to Sash yesterday, he asked about the case. See what you think about this, and then let him know what you find. He's very eager to hear what you have to say about this. Have a good one, Ang.' She fired it off, leaning back in her chair. She felt that today was going to be one very, very long day. (Posted by Kari) ===================================================================== (USS Hades – Deck 1, Main Bridge – HO Lieutenant Finlay Guarastine – 1209) Finlay had kept her head down for the most part during the open channel with the Nelvana III embassy. She was more interested in her sensor readouts of the approaching Neutral Zone border than the attitude of the Romulan officer that had been talking. She could already see the Nelvana star system on the long range sensors. It was situated just inside the Neutral Zone, close the Federation border and was actually about 30 minutes from here at Warp 7, but they had managed to get close enough to open up a direct channel. Even if they hadn’t been this close, the Outpost network that lined the border created a communications network that allowed communication with the base from anywhere along the border, so even if you were approaching Romulan space from the far side of the Klingon empire, you could still open a channel to the Nelvana base without direct subspace communication. Just before the channel closed, a feed of information was shunted to her console. Instantly, Finlay saw the Romulan insignia on the message envelope and knew it would be the coordinates she had been promised. As she fed them into her console, the waypoints appeared one by one on her screen as gold crosses. As the last of the waypoints were plotted, the computer extrapolated the course with a dark green line which began to flash. As she looked at the curved line of the instructed course, Commander Lemar asked, “Lieutenant Guarastine, have you received Romulan instructions?” Finlay drew her long blond her from out of her face with a soft flick to her left. ~In a fashion~ she thought, wondering what was wrong with a good old fashioned straight line. “Yes Commander. Coordinates received.” She spoke as softly as she moved, transferring the projected course directly into the primary helm controls and hit the confirmation button. “Very well. Increase speed to Warp 7, then adjust course and speed as you see fit.” The commander issued his final order then turned to speak quietly with the Ambassador and the Captain. As Finlay moved to lower the warp speed, to make the final set of adjustments to the pitch, she noticed the Captain leave the bridge again, leaving the Commander and Ambassador in the centre talking briefly. Finlay’s eyes then set on the Horta to her side. ~I like Maraht, it’s such a shame he had to find Leesa like that~ she though, a sympathetic look on her face. ~Erm, he might think you’re staring...~ she thought after looking just a few moments too long, then she looked back at her controls. After receiving the final confirmation from the computer that the last set of corrections had been made, Finlay said out loud, “Course laid in Commander. Increasing speed to Warp 7.” “How long do you think it will take us to reach Romulan space, Lieutenant?” The Ambassador approached the forward stations and stood quite close to both Finlay and Maraht. As Finlay looked over her shoulder, he hair getting just a little bit in her face, she saw that the ambassador was looking eager, as if he couldn’t wait to get to the negotiations. ~Not so fast mister ambassador. From what I hear, you have some internal work to take care of don’t you?~ she thought, a gleaming smile on her face. “I think a little under 9 hours, thanks to the Romulans and their indirect course through the Neutral Zone.” “Ah, wonderful. I will clear my schedule, just in case.” Ambassador Nolan clasped his hands together in glee before turning away from the forward station and making his way toward the corridor. “Thank you for your time commander.” ~Strange man~ thought Finlay, turning fully back to her station and focusing on the suggested course from the Romulan. ~Maybe the Romulans don’t want us near something on their end of the border?~ she thought, wondering what the reason for the strange course through the Neutral Zone. ~I wonder if it’s something we can get a peep at with long range sensors?~ she thought, making a note to mention it to Celia, her girlfriend that worked in Astrometrics. (posted by Dave) ===================================================================== (USS Hades - Deck 1, Main Bridge - CTAC Lt. Ammon Ranae - 1210) Just as Ranae expected, the Captain was unflappable, he simply stared at the ignorant Romulan and told her in a calm manner that his officers were some of the most capable in the fleet, and assured her that they would stick to the requested course. =^= Very well. I will inform my Praetor of your intention=^= Then without anything further, she was gone, and the screen was filled with image of the Federation counterpart, Javen Gill. =^= You'll have to excuse her Captain. She is normally quite amiable.=^= ~Is there such a thing as an amiable Romulan?~ Ranae thought, still chaffing a bit at the woman's impertinent and disrespectful attitude, but then what did she expect, the Rommies were well known for being arrogant and deplorable. The Ambassador laughed, "I think she was actually one of the more pleasant of her race," he commented, looking over to Sash. Gill wished them good luck and after the Ambassador bid him farewell, the screen went blank and the First Officer asked Guarastine if the Romulans' instructions had been received and ordered her to go to Warp 7. "Course laid in Commander. Increasing speed to Warp 7." "How long do you think it will take us to reach Romulan space, Lieutenant?" The Ambassador approached the forward stations, asking the CONN officer for the information. Ranae listened, interested in the answer. Apparently it would take a a bit under 9 hours which obviously pleased the Ambassador as he turned away and thanked Cdr. Lemar for his time before heading towards the corridor. Turning to look at the tactical officer on Station two, Ranae addressed him. "Ensign, I am going to get some lunch, you're in charge of tactical station one while I am gone. I will return within the hour." (Reply Lese iyw) With a congenial nod and smile, Ranae followed the path that the Ambassador had taken. She thought ten forward would be a nice place to get something to eat. Once she was on the turbo-lift she tapped her commbadge. "Ammon to Trinin. I'm on my way to ten-forward for lunch if you'd care to join me." (posted by Sal) ===================================================================== (USS Hades - Deck 7, CSEC's Office - CSEC Lt. Baylon Trinin - 1215) Baylon had spent more time in the CSEC office reviewing the Dossiers of the Ambassadorial Delegation that he had cared to admit. He had just put them down for a couple of minutes of mental respite when his commbadge chirped. ~What by the Ancient Gods is it this time?~ he thought but smiled when he heard Ranae's voice over the speakers of his badge. =^=Ammon to Trinin. I'm on my way to ten-forward for lunch if you'd care to join me.=^= Just the mention of food caused his stomach to rumble. His breakfast that morning had been little more than some dried bread, called toast, and some very strong Tea steeped from berries of the Andorian H'rokmatag (Wiggling root). Smiling he tapped his own commbadge. "Lieutenant Ammon, I'd be delighted. I will meet you there." (reply Ranae) Baylon stood and stretched for a couple of moment, realigning a couple of not quite right vertebras and picked up his PADD. He started for the door fo his office, then stopped. With a sigh, he forced himself to return to his desk and place the PADD on the desktop. He'd not be taking his work to lunch with him if he could help it. He turned and still smiling headed for Ten Forward. He then looked over to the Ambassador, who was already edging away from he and the Captain, moving toward the viewscreen. Jonas then eyed the Captain, who appeared to have things on his mind. “Is everything alright?” Jonas asked with genuine concern. The Captain seemed to rub at his temples, but still smiled and insisted, “I’m fine. I’ll leave things in your capable hands Jonas.” ~Is he sick?~ thought Jonas, not recalling the last time the Captain had fallen ill. After a moment he decided he hadn’t ever recalled the Captain being ill since he had first served with him on the Nimitz. He gave a nod, and watched after him as he strode off the bridge and back to his office. ~Maybe something to do with the Ambassador?~ Jonas continued to wonder about the Captain, but then turned his focus to the task at hand as Guarastine soon said, “Course laid in Commander. Increasing speed to Warp 7.” By now, the Ambassador was standing very close the forward console. He seemed quite eager as he asked, “How long do you think it will take us to reach Romulan space, Lieutenant?” “...a little under 9 hours...” she replied. “Ah, wonderful. I will clear my schedule, just in case.” Ambassador Nolan clasped his hands together in glee before turning away from the forward station and making his way toward the corridor where he had entered. “Thank you for your time commander.” “Any time, mister Ambassador,” Jonas waited until he was gone before he shook his head and said, “Is it me, or is he very excited about this trip?” (reply: any IYW) Returning to the command seat, Jonas saw the fast approaching border on his own read outs. “Lieutenant Ammon,” he started, then noticed that the tactical Lieutenant had left the bridge with the Ambassador and left her new assistant in control. Jonas smiled at the Ensign and said, “Ensign Lese, I want continual scans for the duration of our trip. Don’t just look for ships. Alert me if there is anything out of the ordinary.” (reply: Lese) Satisfied with the response, Jonas pressed a button the interface to his chair-based console, “Bridge to Engineering. We’re about to cross over into the Neutral Zone. You need to tell me know if you don’t think you’re ready for anything.” (reply: Harper) Turning, Jonas noticed that Ardena Carrow had entered the bridge. He smiled over at her and said, “Lieutenant Carrow, no doubt you’ll want to use this opportunity to glean as much information as you can about the passing systems. I take it your teams are ready, and their eyes open?” (reply: Carrow) After the reports from the various departments, Jonas gave a final nod and relaxed a little in the command seat. “Well then mister Nayati. It sounds like we’re as ready as we’re going to be, wouldn’t you agree?” (posted by Dave) ===================================================================== (USS Hades - Turbo lift - CTAC Lt. "Wonderful, I look forward to seeing you." Ranae closed the link. It would be good to see him, he'd been so busy lately they hadn't had any quality time together, they had even been sleeping in their own quarters since the Ambassador had arrived. Yes, it would be good to spend some time with him, even just for a meal. She strode out of the turbo lift and down the corridor to Ten Forward. (posted by Sal) ===================================================================== (USS Hades - Deck 1, Main Bridge – CCOUNS Ensign Jon Nayati – 1216) Jon watched as the main view screen switched back to a panoramic view of external space. Captain Sash transferred command to FO Lamar and departed rather unceremoniously. There was a look of fatigue and residual tension in his face and aura. On the other hand Ambassador Nolan's facial expression reflected obvious enjoyment at the prospect of negotiating with the Romulans on their home turf, no matter how fraught with potential risk his mission might be. After getting a relative idea of how long it would take to traverse the Neutral Zone, Ambassador Nolan also departed. Science Officer Ardena Carrow had entered at some point and Commander Lamar issued instructions to her about monitoring those star systems they encountered as the Hades crossed through the Neutral Zone. Jon listened, quite impressed, as Commander Lamar issued clear instructions to OPS and Engineering in regard to the current mission parameters. Jon noted that all the officers at their duty stations seemed attentive, alert and at ease with mission so far. ~Its the sign of good crew,~ Jon concluded to himself as Cmdr. Lamar addressed him. "Well then Mister Nayati. It sounds like we're as ready as we're going to be, wouldn't you agree?" Jon didn't even need to take a cleansing breath to center himself before answering. "The crew seems fit and professional Commander. Ambassador Nolan appears happy about the first meeting with the Romulans, happier than the Romulan T'Nar, and our Federation counter part seemed free of any sign of overt distress. In regard to the Romulan, she obviously did not like us being here, but there were no signs of duplicity between her aura and her words. So when she said to stay on the given coordinates, she wasn't kidding around regarding the dire consequences of any course deviations on our part." (Reply Jonas Lamar, Ardena Carrow, Any) Jon continued, somewhat uncomfortably, "At the risk of belaboring the obvious, Commander, since we've used cloaking devices in our recent civil war, I suggest we use whatever sensor technology we have available to us to detect similar stealth systems on any Romulan ships that might start shadowing the Hades as we go deeper into Romulan space." A server came over right away and she ordered one of Baylon's favorite teas for them both to start, explaining that she was expecting company for lunch. The young human woman smiled and nodded in acknowledgment, her name was Lea and knew both Ranae and Baylon. "I will bring the drinks when I see Lt. Trinin come in." "That will be fine." Ranae stated and watched the white streaks through the view ports with a glance to the door every time it opened. Lea returned a couple of minutes later, practically on Baylon's heels, and placed two cups on saucers, a small bowl of various packets of sweeteners, and a pot of hot tea on the table as he sat down opposite Ranae. Ranae reached and gave his hand an affectionate squeeze across the table while Lea stood by to take their orders. "I ordered tea, is that alright?" (reply Baylon) She glanced up at Lea. "I will have a lobster salad to start and apple crisp with custard for dessert." When Lea had taken their orders, Ranae smiled brightly at her lover. She had promised herself that she wouldn't talk about work over lunch. "It feels like we've been apart forever, we really must make some time for us." She told him while she poured the steaming tea into each cup. (posted by Sal) ===================================================================== (USS Hades - Deck 10, Ten Forward - CSEC Lt. He was excited to see Ranae sitting in her favorite spot and Baylon wasted no time crossing the room and taking a seat directly across from her. The waitress Lea brought a hot pot of tea, the same that Ranae had introduced him to on Bajor, and which had become his favorite. "I ordered tea, is that alright?" Ranae asked him as he sat down. She reached out and firmly squeezed his hand. "Perfectly delightful." Baylon responded as he returned the gentle squeeze to her hand. Lea stood nearby perfectly silent. She was waiting to take their orders. "I will have a lobster salad to start and apple crisp with custard for dessert." Ranae ordered, to which Baylon added, " I'll have a toasted Cuban Sandwich on rye, with those little slices of deep fried potatoes. I'd also like a slice of Caramel pie with Vanilla bean iced cream afterwards." Lea smiled, nodded then headed off to the kitchen. "It feels like we've been apart forever, we really must make some time for us." Ranae said as she poured a couple of cups of tea. "Tell me about it. I think that if I review any more readiness plans or counterboarding scenarios, that I'll go blind and quit my job to become a traveling vagabond somewhere where it's safe." Baylon accepted his cup of tea and added a drizzle of honey and a dash of lemon zest to the wonderful drink. He mixed it with his spoon then took a sip. Smacking his lips appreciatively he returned the cup to the saucer. "I was thinking that maybe on our next shore leave we could go someplace really fun like Risa or Dago Paradise." Baylon offered, " You know? We could do some shopping, swimming, or what have you." "Tell me about it. I think that if I review any more readiness plans or counterboarding scenarios, that I'll go blind and quit my job to become a traveling vagabond somewhere where it's safe." Ranae chuckled and slid his cup and saucer towards him and watched as he added a drizzle of honey and a dash of lemon zest to it before doing the same to hers. He sipped it and smacked his lips with approval causing her to chuckle again. "I was thinking that maybe on our next shore leave we could go someplace really fun like Risa or Dago Paradise." Baylon offered, " You know? We could do some shopping, swimming, or what have you." Lifting her cup, Ranae took a sip and placed the cup on it's saucer. "Mmmm." She replied, grinning at him. That 'what have you' sounds really interesting, and you know I never say no to a shopping spree! I think that's a splendid idea but right now I'm more interested in knowing how soon we can spend some real quality time together." (reply Baylon) Ranae nodded and smiled. "Alright." Their orders arrived and she started tucking in to her meal. It was delicious and she savored every mouthful. She was happy to be with Baylon, even if it was for a little while. I think that's a splendid idea but right now I'm more interested in knowing how soon we can spend some real quality time together." Baylon smiled back at her. Then thought about things for a little bit. Well I could definitely use some relaxation time before we reach get across the Neutral Zone and reach Romulan Space in nine hours. I could probably break at about 1400 hours. What do you say you do the same, and we'll run the Hot springs at Boleros IV simulation on the Holodeck for a few hours?" "Alright." She said smiling. Baylon thought for a moment that she was going to say something else but the food arrived and they both started eating. For Baylon, just being in close proximity to Ranae was intoxicating. He did miss the tender caresses that they shared and the laughter. Now that the civil war was over, maybe they should discuss their long-term future. Perhaps after the mission with the Romulans was finished, they'd have a conversation along those lines. "I heard that you got a new transfer in tactical." Baylon mentioned between bites, "Does that mean you'll not be needing Lieutenant Tarus?" (posted by Daniel Greene) ===================================================================== (USS Hades – Holodeck 1 [Deck 10, Ten Forward] – SO Lieutenant Tarus Daban - 1321) “…so you’ve already been to the Neutral Zone before?” Nolan smiled, looking the lovely lady up and down. She had been standing with a small group of friends near to the bar when Nolan had accidentally brushed against her, spilling her drink. He had of course offered to replace the beverage, and as she accepted his offer the two had begun speaking. The woman gave an affectionate giggle in return and nodded her head. She sipped her drink and said, “So, how long have you been an ambassador, Ambassador?” Just then the lights dimmed and the ship buffeted hard. Nolan’s glass flew out of his hand and smashed on the floor. The ship buffeted again, and then again, now time between the bombardments. A light fitting behind the bar burst into sparks and some kind of vapour began spewing from an exposed conduit. =^= All hands to battle stations =^= came the First officers voice over the comm. system and instantly Nolan’s eyes filled with concern. The young blonde that had been speaking to him ran off in the direction of the door. “What’s happening?” called out Nolan to Brianna Frazier, who was at this point on the floor beside him. “We’re under attack,” she said instinctively, moving her red hair from her face and getting back to her feet. Just then a sight through the viewport stopped them both in their tracks. A massive dark ship filled the starscape, flying dangerously close to them and moving off. It was clear, even from this angle, that the ship was a D’deridex-class Romulan warbird. As it turned sharply, firing a barrage of florescent green plasma toward them. As they hit, both Bree and Nolan were thrown backward as the force of the weapons fire collapsed the forward shield and hit the bulkhead directly. Seconds later there were green shimmer’s all around them, and within moments Romulan soldiers had everyone frozen at the barrel of a plasma pistol. It was Paris Kolar who leapt into action, diving herself at the closest centurion. He was thrown to the floor and his weapon skidded to the wall, but Kolar’s victory was futile as two other officers fired their weapons directly at her. She didn’t stand a chance. The last known location of the ambassador was ten forward, and that’s where we’re heading right now. They are our top priority, understood?” “Yes sir,” was the joint responses from the men behind Tarus. =^= Yes sir =^= came a likewise response from the other four members of the team who were also on route and planning to meet Tarus there. Nearing the final corner, Tarus saw the entrance to ten forward. Stopping he indicated that his men should take up flanking positions by the door. “We’re in position,” started Tarus, speaking into his comm. badge to the team that where to be at the opposite entrance at any second. (posted by Dave) ===================================================================== (USS Hades – Holodeck 1 [Deck 10, Corridor] – SO Lieutenant Tarus Daban - 1324) =^= in position =^= came the response as a whisper from the comm. system. “Very well, pattern delta two, move on three.” Tarus said, quietly but firmly. Giving a momentary glance to his other team members he said, “One...” and the thee of them moved from their position, two men flattening themselves again the wall. “...two...” he said as he himself moved within visual range of the glass door. Another of his team took the opposite wall, but a position that meant he couldn’t be easily seen from inside the room. “...three!” The doors to ten forward opened instantly and green weapons fire shot in their general direction. A smouldering black mark could be seen on the adjacent wall, a firm reminder of how damaging Romulan plasma weapons could be. ~This is not going well~ he thought, knowing that to be truly effective they should try and neutralise as many as guards as possible to safeguard the hostages – in this case, the ambassador and his team. In an instant, Tarus ran into the room, following quickly by his three other team members. In a fraction of a second he had pin-pointed three Romulan guards, in quick as a flash he squeezed his trigger repeatedly and took them down. While that occurred, Tarus also noticed the doors to the opposite end of ten forward were similarly being entered by the other half of the squad. Likewise, Romulan guards fell one by one and soon the element of surprise was completely lost. As Tarus fired another blue pulse with his rifle, he cursed as the guard at which he had been aiming ducked behind an upturned table. A fraction of a second later he returned fire and one of his team members was struck in the chest, knocked back a little by the force. “Ah damn it,” he exclaimed as the man’s weapons shimmered out of existence as the computer instantly deemed him as no longer part of the simulation. Quite rightly so, the officer remained where he had fallen, a distinctly displeased look on his face. Tarus hesitated, and that was a mistake he should not have made. A Romulan took his chance at the open space to point his weapon a number of times into the huddle of people that could be seen to include Ambassador Nolan & Brianna Frazier. He instantly discharged his weapon into the small group and there was a flurry of screams. There was some shouting in what Tarus assumed was Romulan, just before the rest of the strike team began to move forward, leaving Tarus in a position to watch the outcome. Starfleet weapons fire struck in multiple places as the remaining Romulan aggressors were taken down. “Clear!” shouted one officer, checking one corner that had housed a Romulan trying to defend himself. Similar shouts were called out all across the room as each member of the team checked the health of their targets. Tarus stood up and came out from his position behind the bar. As he slowly paced over to where the small huddle of people had been, he could see at once the result of the simulation had been a dismal failure. As he knelt down and leaned forward to pull over the holographic corpse, he could see quite clearly that this was now a lifeless representation of Brianna Frazier, burn marks on her face where she had quite squarely taken a shot on weapons fire. Beside her was a stiff looking Ambassador Nolan, equally lifeless and similarly injured. Getting once more to his feet Tarus commanded the computer to end the simulation. There was a brief chirp of acknowledgement before a quiet whooshing noise could be heard all around them as the holographic scene disappeared. As Tarus looked around each member of the team he could see that half of them hung their heads, clearly disappointed with the result. The one man that had been shot during the simulation was now getting himself to his feet. “Start the simulation again Tarus, let us take another shot at them.” Tarus smiled, pleased that the man was eager to correct his mistakes. “Clearly we need a different approach. Storming the doors in this sort of situation is not going to work. How about we try it this way...” he started, and as the other eager members of the strike force listened, Tarus explained his thought on what had just occurred. (posted by Dave) ===================================================================== (USS Hades – Deck 10, Sickbay – SO Lieutenant Tarus Daban - 1348) ~You’re an idiot Daban~ Tarus cursed to himself as he limped down the corridor headed for sickbay. As he did his best not appear like he was struggling the distance, he turned the final corner and finally the doors were in sight. He also had an injury to his left should, and he was doing his best to apply pressure with his right hand. His uniform was badly burned, and was stained with a mixture of black and red. He had been training in the Holodeck just a few minutes ago, practising the hostage rescue scenarios that Lieutenant Trinin had ordered him to get ready for, however, Tarus felt that his team weren’t performing to the best of their ability. Tarus believed that adrenaline seriously enhanced your abilities with this type of thing, and only true way to simulate that was to put his team in real danger. So, he had tweaked the safeties a little ... maybe a lot, and as a result he had sustained an injury from a holographic Romulan – although through no fault of his own. At the time had been diving to protect a member of his own team, who had stupidly made a wrong move and drawn unnecessary attention to himself. The other officer had escaped unharmed, but Tarus had been a victim of his own harsh simulation. As he staggered the final few metres to the doorway, they finally opened to admit him. As he came to a stop somewhere close to a nearby biobed, he called out, “I think I need some medical attention.” (reply: Trommashere, any) “It’s not as bad as it looks, really, it’s more like a scratch,” he said, removing his hand and wincing in obvious pain. ~How are you going to explain this to the boss~ he thought, hoping the docs could fix him up good as new. He was no use to anyone out of action. (posted by Dave) ===================================================================== (USS Hades – Deck 10, Sickbay – CMO Angeni O. Windsong-Trommashere - 1352) Angeni was just finishing up a quick note to Jon. She was hoping that he could meet her for a late dinner that evening. With the goings on around the ship, they hadn't had much time to see each other. Hopefully they could join each other in a little R&R, but before she could finish the message to send it, she could smell the scent of a burning or recently been burnt uniform, and the acrid, iron-ish smell of blood. She looked through the window and saw someone staggering in. Her first thought was that somehow, she completely missed the ship-wide red alert and that the battle had started, but unless everyone in the bay missed it as well, she figured she was kind of safe. “I think I need some medical attention.” Said the voice all too calmly. Angeni walked out, holding out her tricorder, a smile on her face. "Well...that's the understatement of the millenia..." She winced as she helped him onto the biobed, feeling his left shoulder ball and socket joint grind out of place. "Oooh...I know what that is. What did you do?!" “It’s not as bad as it looks, really, it’s more like a scratch,” "I think I'll be the one to judge that one." She looked into his eyes, her deep grey pools full of merriment. It's not too often she gets to have fun with her patients. "I don't believe we've met..." She went around to his back, doing a visual inspection of the lacerations and the first and possibly second degree, in some spots, burns. With the help of space age technology, she was able to peel the polycarbon uniform off his back without leaving little melted pieces everywhere. "I'm Dr. Trommashere, but I prefer to be called Angeni...or some form of the like. You are?" (Reply Daban) "Any allergies, past medical history I need to know about?" (Reply Daban) She picked up a hypo spray, looking it over. "This, my friend, is nothing more than a pain killer. It's non narcotic, but it does a great job in going to the hyper-sensitive nerve endings that you've managed to piss off. You have more than your fair share of superficial lacerations along your back, but I need you to lay down so I can reduce your shoulder." The young Doctor beconed to a very...large...male medic, and she smiled sweetly at him. "Hey Casey...mind helping me reduce his shoulder?" "No problem, Ang...I just need to make a quick run." "Good, see you shortly." Angeni pulled up a stool next to Tarus's biobed, and she sat next to him, typing out some things on her padd. "I assure you, this is the best, easiest, and quickest way of getting your shoulder back into place. It's called the Matsen Method. Casey is going to be my counter weight; I'm going to affix a strap around your chest, and he's just going to stand there to make sure I don't pull you off the biobed. I'm going to be on the side of your injured arm. I'm going to put a strap right around that forearm, and I'm going to have your elbow bent at 90 degrees. While holding onto your wrist, I'll be able to lean backwards, and pop your shoulder back where it belongs. I'm also going to load you up with as many pain killers as possible to make this go smoothly, but be assured, none of them will be narcotic, and none of them will give you that...my head's about to float away feeling. You can go back to duty when you feel ready." She flashed a dazzling smile at him. "So...what do you think?" (Posted by Kari) ===================================================================== (USS Hades – Deck 10, Sickbay – SO Lieutenant Tarus Daban - 1353) As the Chief Medical Officer herself came out of her office, she began to look over his injuries. As her friendly eyes stared into his, she said, “I don't believe we've met...” Daban was a little caught off by the remark. He had just expected to be told what was wrong with him, treated, and shipped out. Instead, he started to receive a bedside manner that he hadn’t really had chance to experience before. “I'm Dr. Trommashere, but I prefer to be called Angeni...or some form of the like. You are?” she started in her natural friendly tone. “Tarus,” he stated matter-of-factly. A little uncertain about how friendly he wanted to get with this doctor. He wasn’t planning to make visits here a regular occurrence. As she blinked at him he noticed that he might have upset her flow a little, so he decided to offer just a little bit more. “Lieutenant Tarus Daban.” He wasn’t overly comfortable sharing his given name with a stranger, but he doubted it would do a great deal of harm in this instance. "Any allergies, past medical history I need to know about?" she asked, moving past Daban’s initial stiff exterior. Daban just shook his head, “Nothing that I know of. I’ve always been in good health...until today.” Doctor Trommashere then proceeded to get a little more comfortable, and as she pulled up a stood to the biobed she began to explain what she was about to do next. Apparently, ‘reducing’ the shoulder was the best way to go, and although at first Daban had no clue what that meant, after a few minutes it seemed he had been educated. It basically involved her popping his shoulder back into place with brute force. “...I'm also going to load you up with as many pain killers as possible to make this go smoothly, but be assured, none of them will be narcotic, and none of them will give you that...my head's about to float away feeling. You can go back to duty when you feel ready.” Flashing a dazzling smile at him she said, “So...what do you think?” Daban couldn’t help but loosen up now. The doctor had been incredibly frank with him, and she didn’t deserve the frosty reception he was giving her. So, he instantly slouched a little and relaxed his muscles. “Do whatever you need to do Doctor Angeni. As long as I can get back to it when we’re done, that’s fine with me.” (reply: Trommashere) “Listen,” he started, wondering just how approachable the doctor could be. “You don’t have to report this to Lieutenant Trinin do you? I mean, I didn’t take all of the Holodeck safeties off-line. Just enough to make it real.” Then Daban paused, thinking he might have given a little too much information. “We’re performing simulations you see, hostage rescue scenarios, just in case.” (posted by Dave) ===================================================================== (USS Hades – Deck 10, Sickbay – CMO Angeni O. Windsong-Trommashere - 1357) “Do whatever you need to do Doctor Angeni. As long as I can get back to it when we’re done, that’s fine with me.” She nodded, removing her lab coat. She rolled her shoulders a bit, grabbing a set of long, leather straps. She poked and prodded him a bit, then she smiled. "You, in theory, could walk out of these doors and be able to whip a Klingon bare handed." She winked at him, measuring a few hypo sprays. “Listen,” he started, wondering just how approachable the doctor could be. “You don’t have to report this to Lieutenant Trinin do you? I mean, I didn’t take all of the Holodeck safeties off-line. Just enough to make it real.” “We’re performing simulations you see, hostage rescue scenarios, just in case.” Angeni held up a hand, a smile on her face. "As far as I'm concerned...I never saw you here. Unless you hurt someone else in the process...but...since all the safeties weren't off...it was an accident. Nothing reportable. Besides, SF HIPPA rules state that even if the Captain himself came and asked me if you were in here, I couldn't even say I saw you." (Reply Daban) She leaned down, hypoing him with all three sprays. While she waited for Casey, she ran the dermal regenerator over his chest, a knowlegeable eye looking at the constant display on the biobed. "Do you think we're ready? If something bad happens I mean?" She patched some of the deeper wounds with a dermal adhesive. "I have to give you guys all the credit in the world. You have to think three steps a head of the bad guys constantly. " (Reply Daban) She started to speak, when Casey appeared by the biobed. Angeni stood, rolling up her sleeves, and she started strapping one of the straps around Tarus's chest. She hit him with another spray, smiling gently as she looked at the neuro output, watching the arm and chest nerves slowly deaden to show only a very minor reaction to pressure. "You're going to feel a lot of pressure and pulling. Just try to stay relaxed, breathe through it. If you are in ANY pain whatsoever, we will stop, and I'll load you up again. I'm trying hard to not give you any narcs. Problem is, if I give you some, you'll be out of commission for the day. I can give something to flush the narcs out of your body, but the pain is going to come back, three fold. Is my plan okay with you, Lieutennant?" She wanted to be as frank and open with him as possible. She never sugar coated anything for her patients. She found that being vauge and beating around the bush only made patients aggrivated when she changed the game plan. Besides, she wanted to make sure he didn't have any objections. A patient who can help make treatment decisions was one who would be willing to come back if anything happened; no one liked feeling like the doctor was above them and treating them like they were stupid.
