As if it hadn't been used in a long time. "How did I get to Mars? Where's the Paladin?" “Ease up there…” Ailynn spoke, striding across the bay. Not yet on duty here, but she stepped in anyway. She’d only stuck her head in in passing, and grabbed a hypospray as she passed a nurse carrying a tray. She pressed it to the Trill Officer’s neck and dispensed a standard safe anti-nausea shot. She picked up a tricorder and made her normal scans. “Computer, activate EMH” “¿Cuál es la naturaleza de la emergencia?” the Mark III Hologram spoke as it appeared. Ailynn stood, open mouthed. “Are you serious?” Her tone was incredulous, anything around here do what it was built to?” She shook her head. “Si Seniorita.” “Computer deactivate EMH. Petty Officer run a full diagnostic please.” (Reply Castile) [confirmed] the computer spoke in reply. She looked at Alyl, and then back to her scans. “The Paladin? Now that’s going back some. You’re on Mars, Starfleet Martian Ground Facilities. Are you okay? I’m not seeing any Head injuries, but I’m going to need to keep an eye on you. ” Jaton looked at the doctor confusedly. "Going back some? What?' “Good news is that shock notwithstanding, you’re all healthy, sats are a touch elevted, but nothing I’m worried about. Now, no stimulants for at least 24 hours, your system won’t like it at all after the anti-nausea. Promise that you’ll take it easy and you can go. Push yourself and your backside is holed up in here again.” "I see, but there's something I feel like I'm missing. You say the Paladin's going back a way. And somehow I'm on Mars. How long was I out? What's the current stardate?" You say the Paladin's going back a way. And somehow I'm on Mars. How long was I out? What's the current stardate?" There was something…something in his voice, and mannerism, Ailynn perched on the edge of the biobed and thought very carefully about how she was going to approach this. She made a mental note to set up some counselling sessions, once she found a duty counsellor. But for the meantime, a careful, honest approach would be the best option. Without more detailed scans, she couldn’t even begin to determine the problem here. ~how long ago was the Paladin anyway, she remembered what her mum had told her.~ “Okay Ensign…” (Reply Alyl) “…Alyl. He sat there slack-jawed and wide-eyes for several seconds. He tried desperately to process what was just told to him. "Stardate...2444? 2444? Are you trying to tell me I've been out for 25 years?" His head all of a sudden felt very heavy. He leaned forward and cradled his head in his hands. His head leaned forward and cradled his head in his hands. Looking around her she caught the eye of a nurse who had happened to be passing, trying desperately to bring some order to what was around her. She held her arm around Alyl’s shoulders. “Twenty…?” Ailynn’s mind was racing. “Nurse. Are you able to do a complete suite of scans?” “Yes Doctor. Blood sweep, Standard Sats, DNA will take longer, our equipment is…” Ailynn nodded, looking around her. “Yes it is rather isn’t it. Get me everything that you are able to. As quickly as you are able to do it. What else do you have on this morning? Anything that can’t be postponed?” The young nurse shook her head. “Nothing no, we’re still clearing, logging, trying to get some order.” “Then this takes priority over everything. Ensign Alyl is to be admitted. He can stay on here, or move into what looks like a day room through the way? Keep an eye on him. Say…30 minute obs. for the time being.” She nodded. She struck Ailynn as the type to fill in any blanks that may have been missed and pre-empt things. She would prove an asset no doubt. “Ensign.” She sighed. “Jaton. I can’t begin to imagine how you’re feeling, but mark my words we’ll find out what’s going on. Make yourself as comfortable as possible. You’re not confined to the bed, but take it easy.” (Reply Alyl) “I’ll inform the Admiral as soon as is possible that you’re in my direct care, and make an initial report. "In any case I suppose if I'm going to be stuck here, I might as well catch up on what's happened in the last 25 years. Before you leave, could you bring me a PADD?" (reply Bracken) Jaton looked down at his bare chest again. "And perhaps a shirt?" (Starfleet Martian Ground Facilities - Gymnasium Lounge - Sec, ENS JG Flagg - 9:50) pen. Rebecca watched as Trip got up hoping that she had not pushed things too far, but it was good to see the man’s passion. Rebecca was not sure what it was but she could see something in him "Umm, I mean, I dunno, I'm just someone who brings my emotions into everything I do. They are what makes me, me. I'm a vulcan's worse nightmare in that regards. I'm a military brat, and when you grow up around Starfleet, when everyone in your family is wearing the uniform, you try and find things to help you stand out, help you feel unique, find something that makes you feel alive or as your own person. I took martial arts as a kid because I wanted to be a super hero, but I learned to fight as an adult because I wanted to rebel against the notion that as James Andrew Williams the Third, I had to follow in my father and grandfather's footstep. That I could still be in Starfleet and be my own person, follow my own destiny." As trip talked Rebecca stayed curled up on the sofa watching him as she sipped on her tea. It was a little odd of her to have a large mug, but she did not want to be too aquand with wanting pot. As trip slowed down she gave him a big smile and knowing nod. "So yeah, I bring a rawness and passion to everything I do, because everything I do is for me, to carve my own path and to make my own damn choices. Everything I do is to prove that I belong, that I've earned my place, earned the right to wear the uniform." She knew the real reason was nothing like it but the explanation seemed to fit “I joined as a marine after stunning engineering so that I did not follow in my father’s footsteps. He was a designer. I not meat anyone in the in the uniform that does not deserve it.” As Trip sat back down Rebecca leaned forward a little but careful not to touch him again for the moment but she looked into his eyes as they talked. "Everything I do is raw, because everything I do, is just one step forward in figuring out who I am and what I want my life to be." Rebecca smile at him, she had a totally different way of thinking, live life to the full. “I learned that if you walk to a goal then you look at the goal and miss the hole journey and all the sites and activities along the way.” (TAG TRIP) He was fun to talk to and she could not deny Trips passion, but she wanted to know where is stood with him. “What do you say, we just see where things go and for the now and take your eye of your goals for a minute.” (TAG TRIP) She knew she was playing things risky but Rebecca liked the risk and hoped that she had a good read on him. “It is your choice what every you want to do.” (reply Trip) (posted by Giles PJ) (Starfleet Martian Ground Facilities - Gymnasium Lounge - CONN, ENS JG Trip Williams - 9:58) “Are you really interested?” "I mean, this could all just be small talk, but I at least think it was a question worth asking." Trip said with a smile. “Well, I was a marine NCO for some time. As a combat engineer and them Explosive Ordnance Disposal Expert before joining the fleet.” ~That explains why she knows how to fight.~ Rebecca then took Trips hand placing it on her shoulder so he could feel the scared shoulder through the thin silk material. As she spoke she moved it to feel the start of her cybernetic arm. “The reason for my change to the fleet. But the freedom suits me a lot better.” Trip had no idea that she had had a cybernetic arm, perhaps that was why she was wearing a cheongsam rather than PT gear. People were weird about scars, some liked to hide them, Trip showed them off as a badge of honor, proof he was still alive. Rebecca then began to run her hand back on trips shoulder tracing another scar as she leaned closer in to him. “What about you? You’re not like most Starfleet. You have a rawness a passion when you fight, I hope you being it to other things.” Trip got up, from the sofa and move away a little bit. He was begging to wonder if her perhaps should have put a spare shirt in his bag. One did not need to be an empath to get a feel for where Rebecca's mind was at. She was attractive, there was no doubt about that, but from what Trip could gather she was significantly older than him, He wasn't sure what was going to happen. "Umm, I mean, I dunno, I'm just someone who brings my emotions into everything I do. They are what makes me, me. I'm a vulcan's worse nightmare in that regards. I get that, but I still don't know what the destination is, so if you focus too much on the journey when you don't know where you are going, well you are going to get lost. So I got to keep my eyes on the goal, to stay grounded. But that doesn't mean I let that keep me from having fun." "What do you say, we just see where things go and for the now and take your eye of your goals for a minute.” "Are you implying what I think you are implying?" Trip asked quizically. He wanted to use his empathic abilities to read her, but he didn't want to open himself up to others emotions, not anymore anyways. "It is your choice what every you want to do.” Trip looked at her, he placed his arm around her shoulder and turned his body to face her. He looked her in the eyes and smiled a kind smile. "Look, you're very attractive, and I can tell you are a lot of fun, but, I umm, well here is the thing." Trip stumbled over his words. "But the thing is, and I'm not trying to ask your age, but I'm pretty sure you are much older than me." (reply Flagg) "Part of me thinks you are just looking for a friend, a close friend to go to when things are rough and stuff and you need help with tension." "And I'm just not really looking for anything serious you, like I'm not looking to start a relationship or anything. At least not right now." Rebecca had had to stop herself from lathing a Trip, he was indeed naive, if he thought that someone coming onto him from the beginning without knowing him first. She raised an eyebrow at him. “right now?” "But, part of me doesn't think that is what you're asking for is it?" Rebecca placed her hand on Trip leg and let it slip higher, maybe he did her. She was still amazed how things turned around when she did not expect it. “What do you think I am after?” "Part of me thinks you are just looking for a friend, a close friend to go to when things are rough and stuff and you need help with tension." He then gave her a slight smirk and wink when he said that, "Or am I reading that wrong?" Rebecca winked back to him “Yes, someone strong and fit to help with my tension. I sure you going to have the same problem from time to time. What do you say?” (Tag Trip) Rebecca leaned forward and kissed trip on the cheek, she wandered if she was going to spell out eventing for Trip right them but for them moment, she did not want to break what could be. She had always found that people where more open to not being the one after wards. “You going to be very special to me and we’re going to have fun together.” (Tag Trip) Rebecca slowly got up holding Trips hand genterly pulling him to his feel. “I hope you can dance as well.” (Tag Trip?) The Incident hit mum really hard; she lost a good number of people that she cared for very deeply, one of them in front of her on the table, she was utterly powerless to save them. His assignment was turning out to be anything but ordinary!) !! Not only was he an Operations officer on a starship but a Security/Tactical officer with the MARS defense program. Those two areas weren't his strangest areas at the Academy. He was a bit nervous. The admiral's orders gave the crew of Ensigns a lot more responsibility that they would normally have received. Yet these weren't 'normal' times. The admiral added a bit more detail "As Tactical Officers, you have duties on the ships, the stations and other defences… we don’t have any right now, just to let you know. You are now in charge of restarting the Mars Defence Permiter." Jacob looked at the other Sec/Tac offic er s and the admiral before speaking. "Ensigns, Admiral I have one question initially, I think we need to meet review what needs to be done and divide the work into thirds assisting each other as needed". Jake was curious as to his partner's ideas. (Reply from Flagg, Darpeg, Sanok, Peters, Any) (Posted by Bill West) (Starfleet Martian Ground Facilities – Outside the Landing Platforms - Intell Ensign Eva Rozen – 11:48) Eva was surprised and glad to have been given an intelligence assignment with her aunt on her first go arround. Since Starfleet had taken some signigicant damage, she had to accomplish most of her schooling at different colleges of world like betazed but she was able to get some on earth itself. She was able to complete command school on earth also. The graduation ceremonies were held on earth and her two most important people were able to atten, her mother and Aunt. She received her orders that day, Mars as one of two Intelligence officers there under the command of one Admiral Remae Ktell. She had read up on all the upper command while studying and was very happy to be under his command. She had as of yet to talk to her Aunt about their assignment. Eva finally arived mars base just in time for the scheduled briefing to hear what the Admiral had to tell everyone. It took a few moments for the assembled officers to come to order. Many looked dishevelled, lost, scared, unsure of themselves but not all. A sea of Ensigns some of whom snapped to attention, giving their Admiral their ears. The Admiral jumped down from his little crate and he began to walk around the group. They had either come together naturally or had separated apart, some knew each other or had formed friendships already… it was natural. “Welcome to Mars.”, he started and then caught himself a little… He stopped in his tracks. His senior officers were few and far between he thought as he examined them. For a facility this size, there should be hundreds, thousands… but it was not to be. He looked at them intently for another moment before catching himself again and he sat down on his crate… everyone headed for him, gathering around in a circle as he gestured them to come forward. “I am Admiral Remae Ktell, CO of this facility. For reasons that are at the very least, strange and unusual, we’ve all gathered here to try and find a way to recover from recent “incidents” that have affected Starfleet and the Federation and try find our way back to what we once was.”, he said, loudly enough so that all can hear. “We’ve inherited a base that is broken, we have people, who are also broken and we have a limited amount of time to put it all together.”, he said as he stood on his feet. “Why you are on Mars and not Earth or HQ, well, will become clearer over the next few days, needless to say, you are needed here… you may have also noted the severe lack of senior officers over the rank of Ensign around.”, he said pointing at many rank insignias. “This is the intention… I need your clarity of thought, your fresh ideas… not everyone here is fresh from the Academy but the result is the same. Your rank, Ensigns, signifies a new chapter of not only this place but for Starfleet and yourselves. I ask you to do your best, but never not question why things are the way they are, never not question why something is and never not question is this how it has to be.”, he said. “You have your schedules, by departments, at your allotted times, head for ShuttlePad One and meet me. First up, Science – the departure is in 5 minutes, everyone else is dismissed until your time. See if you can make some order out of the chaos.”, he said as he started heading for the runabout. (Mars Base - Landing Platforms - Ens(jg) Carson Peters - 1203) "Yes, I am Ensign Sanok. Well, I will be, once I check in and officially become a Starfleet officer again. May I assist you with something?" the Vulcan responded quickly after taking Carson in, it took him a hot second to soften his manner. He realised it must have sounded like he was after something, with the way he had approached the conversation. "No, not currently. I was just looking to welcome you and introduce myself- and seemingly I have done both now." Carson said with a hint of a smile at the corner of his mouth. "I look forward to working with you Ensign. I'll let you get on with checking in." (Reply Sanok IYW) (Mars Surface - Outside Landing Platforms- Ensign (jg) R'Vek Kental - 1205) R'Vek watched the admiral as he spoke, he had was unsure of what to think the more the man spoke. The galaxy had needed recovering and healing for a long time now and the thought of it just now being important angered him. He took a deep breath and glanced around at the rest of the group gathered. He took another deep breath and thought back to his invitation to the Vulcan defense force and relaxed. A wise man once said all things in good time, the more he pondered the admirals statement the more he relaxed. For a long time he had felt the federation was moving in the wrong direction but no they were trying to make a difference and the admiral was right not all of them were young and had the same experience but they were also all here to make a change, and he had encouraged them to question things. He wasn't sure what to expect but felt this was a going to be a interesting future. As they were dismissed he watched the crowed, as expected almost all of the faces were those of strangers to him and he knew as time went on he would meet more of them. He felt uneasy being around so many new people he wasn't sure who to trust, it wouldn't be the first time people under one flag had different plans of there own but if this first meeting had shown him anything it was that the federation was taking taking steps in the right direction and that he would do everything in his power to help this vision. R'Vek left the landing platform headed for the mess hall. He hadn't eaten since the night before but also thought it might be a good chance to meet some of the fellow ensigns who would be helping rebuild mars and set a new path. (Runabout – Rear Cabin - Admiral Remae Ktell – 12:10) The runabout had already entered lower orbit and the Admiral was content on letting each of the officers introduce themselves. There were three of them listed on the rosters. This flight was more about them knowing each other and him giving them some information about the duties. Over the next hour, the runabout would complete a general circuit of Mars-Space before returning to the landing platforms. “Thank you all.”, said the Admiral spinning his chair around to face them. “Now we’re underway and we’re in private, I can speak to you more directly, clearly and without the need to let rank get in the way.”, he said folding his arms in his chair. The pilot of the runabout, whom Remae had started feeling sorry for already, was making a pre-determined trip around Mars and her facilities. It was easy to let yourself lose focus of what was around you and was ahead. Their first interaction of the runabout was the shipyards. The ship slipped around each before proceeding to the next. “Each shipyard contains a different project for the Engineers. Some ships are being broken down for scrap, some for repairs, some are under construction, and some are getting retrofitted.”, he explained. The list of the 30 shipyards, what they contained and their condition was transferred to each of the Science Officer’s PADDs. As the information was absorbed, Remae had the feeling they didn’t understand why their Science/Research Department was going to be interested in Engineering’s problems. “As you may know, the departure of Andoria from the Federation led to their technology and any technology based on their technology being returned to them. We’ve spent the past 20 odd years trying to catch up. Although we’ve done an adequate job, we’ve not excelled.”, he said pointing over to the ships, the station and Mars. “Other races haven’t been so disadvantaged and combined with other factors, its put Starfleet in a bad position.”, he said now looking at the three of them. “As soon as the rest of the fleet hears about us, everyone is coming here to get their hands on our technology… this place will soon become a major hub for anyone wanting to upgrade their warp drive, sensors, or with new ship designs.”, he now sat back. “The only way forward for Starfleet is for us is to catapult our technology forward and the only way to do is with research and development but we have very little research going on right now, that means, it’s going to come down to what we can do here. Here are your orders…”, he said now reading from a PADD. “Ensigns, I want your research labs to be fully furnished and operational as soon as possible. Your test platform is going to be the USS Republic - the ship currently inside Dock One. She’s nonoperational at the moment, but as soon as she is running, we’re going to use her to test everything you come up with. From warp drive to phasers, from sensors to planet-wide evacuations.”, he paused for a moment. “Once a new system has been developed, you will liaise with the other departments to make it a reality. We will retrofit every single ship we can get their hands on, as fast as we can.”, he said. He was done for the moment so he stopped talking and allowed each of them to think for a moment and digest what he said. “Questions?”, he asked and waiting for anyone to speak up. (Reply from Sekal, Williams-Verin, Alyl, Any) (Posted by Anthony Keen) (Runabout – Rear Cabin - Science Officer– Ens. (jg) Sekal - 12:11) After vectoring away from Mars base for a short distance the pilot had brought the nose of the craft up to a steep vector and 'gunned it' to achieve escape velocity. In a short period of time then they had left the atmosphere of the 'Red' planet and entered the void of space which term was a misnomer. It was at that point that the Admiral, who had been quiet during the flight broke his silence as he spun toward them. “Thank you all. Now we’re underway and we’re in private, I can speak to you more directly, clearly and without the need to let rank get in the way.” Having said that he went silent for a moment as he folded his arms in order for them to come to terms with the sight of what was coming at them. From the window Sekal could see the docking bays of the orbital shipyard come into view. While it appeared the lighting wasn't yet completely operational there had been enough booted up that what was there could be made out though not in complete detail. The shuttle he had come to Mars on had not included a tour of Utopia Planitia but had broken the atmosphere some hundreds of kilometers distance away then took a shallow vector before diving steeply for the base. This had minimized turbulence in coming through the upper atmosphere. As they continued to near the shipyard the true scope of what they faced began to dawn on him. The ship designs (what there were of them) were at a minimum of two decades out of date, at least a third of them seemed to be little more than frameworks and the only complete ship was an immense Odyssey class Dreadnought to which time had seemingly not been kind. Most of this was to be expected. There were no lights currently actuated on the completed ship from which he logically extrapolated that it was non-operational. It was around that point that the enormity of the task of rebuilding the exploratory arm of the United Federation of Planets began to dawn on him. It didn't come to him piecemeal either but in a crashing wave. The shock of it passed quickly, aided by the Admiral's voice as he resumed speaking. “Each shipyard contains a different project for the Engineers. Some ships are being broken down for scrap, some for repairs, some are under construction, and some are getting retrofitted.” Sekal heard a tone from his personal PADD which he preferred over the standard issue and he lifted it into view and began skimming quickly through the documents that it registered as just downloaded. It was engineering specific data and that at this point was a curiosity so there was no doubt more information to be forthcoming. Indeed there was, he looked up at the Admiral as he began explaining their task. “As you may know, the departure of Andoria from the Federation led to their technology and any technology based on their technology being returned to them. We’ve spent the past 20 odd years trying to catch up. Although we’ve done an adequate job, we’ve not excelled.” He then made an expansive gesture which took in the entirety of Mars and its installations. “Other races haven’t been so disadvantaged and combined with other factors, its put Starfleet in a bad position.” He looked at them all directly to accentuate his point. “As soon as the rest of the fleet hears about us, everyone is coming here to get their hands on our technology… this place will soon become a major hub for anyone wanting to upgrade their warp drive, sensors, or with new ship designs.” He shifted to a more comfortable position in his seat. “The only way forward for Starfleet is for us is to catapult our technology forward and the only way to do is with research and development but we have very little research going on right now, that means, it’s going to come down to what we can do here. Here are your orders…”, He picked up his own PADD and began reading from it. “Ensigns, I want your research labs to be fully furnished and operational as soon as possible. Your test platform is going to be the USS Republic - the ship currently inside Dock One. She’s nonoperational at the moment, but as soon as she is running, we’re going to use her to test everything you come up with. From warp drive to phasers, from sensors to planet-wide evacuations.” He paused to allow them to digest this. “Once a new system has been developed, you will liaise with the other departments to make it a reality. We will retrofit every single ship we can get their hands on, as fast as we can.” He paused which gave Sekal a moment to consider. The crystal in his possession up to this point had been more on the order of a curiosity as it was still undergoing research by scientists from his home planet, a research still ongoing for three and one half decades. But to fulfill the Admiral's demands he now saw no logical recourse but to make it the epicenter of his efforts. Should their group be able to 'pull off' then what established scientists had not it would meet Ktell's requirements... and theoretically 'then some'. Sekal knew that his father expected him to research it and counted on him to help fill in the gaps in the available studies. He also understood that the Vulcan authorities had kept its existence secret for a reason. Saleke was commissioned by the VDF now but he had been StarFleet before and he would have to be told if Sekal were to make its existence known. What would be his reaction? Would he continue to support his son in this endeavor or would he cut him off? The Admiral's voice once again broke through his reverie. “Questions?” Sekal looked up. "Not a question Admiral but a statement. I may have access to something that will fulfill your orders in time but it will take a concerted effort by the science staff and anyone with engineering or technical expertise we are allowed to bring on board for it. There may perhaps be another issue as well with the Vulcan authorities though I would suggest using only trusted StarFleet personnel to make the approach and not political in the event our research bears fruit." NRPG: Highlighting this... in the event our research bears fruit. I recommend waiting for the breakthrough before attempting to do so as its existence will otherwise be denied by Vulcan. There are sound reasons for everything Sekal brought up and some things will be made clearer as we go. Also it needs to be understood that Sekal doesn't know everything much less the political reasons behind the policy though he can logically extrapolate a great deal. RPG: (Reply:Ktell iyw) "The reasons should become clear as we verify what I have been told and clear up a current issue." This flight was more about them knowing each other and him giving them some information about the duties. “Thank you all.”, said the Admiral spinning his chair around to face them all as the pilot went along his programmed course and began flying around the facilities. “As Security Officers on Mars, your duties may seem obvious, providing security for the base and its facilities, ships and infrastructure. I am here to tell you, that’s not all your job is.”, he said looking down at his PADD. “You are all aware of the “incident” on Earth last year. This place is to be locked down, we’re going to need systems that check everyone and everything coming and going… right now, I could fly a ship to Mars without being challenged.”, he said, hoping he had made his point. “As Tactical Officers, you have duties on the ships, the stations and other defences… we don’t have any right now, just to let you know. You are now in charge of restarting the Mars Defence Permiter.”, he added quickly before turning to a PADD, “We’ll soon have fighters flying around, providing some security but the MDP must be ready to defend Earth or indeed the entire Sector 001 from anything coming at us… how you do that, well, it’s up to you.”, he passed them a PADD. “The pitiful performance of the MDP is something we MUST turn around. Yet these weren't 'normal' times. He presented his orders, officially stepped down from his position in the VDF, and received a commission as a Starfleet officer. Sanok went to his assigned quarters, a small place, with only the basics. That was all he needed, so it was agreeable to him. Replicating a Starfleet uniform, he stood for a few moments in front of the mirror in the bathroom. Thirty-six years ago, he donned this uniform for the first time. After everything he had experienced in his life, it was strange doing it again. Now, Sanok was back in Starfleet, standing in the rear section of a runabout, listening to his new commanding officer telling the assembled security staff about the plans to rebuild. If Ktell remembered him from the Mithrandir, the admiral didn't mention it. When Ktell opened the door for questions, some of the others put logical queries before the admiral. Sanok remained silent, wauting for Ktell to respond. There was much work ahead, and much more to discuss. (reply Ktell, Darpeg, Flagg, Jackson, Peters) (posted by Rob) (Runabout – Rear Cabin - Ens(jg) Carson Peters – 13:12) Carson had sat uncomfortably as the Runabout had taken off and began its predetermined route of the facilities. To date Starfleet’s investigation into this… tragedy has turned up very little information. One of the reasons we’re doing this on Mars and not on Earth is we’re trying to reduce the exposure of the civilians down there on Mars while at the same time being in a position to move forward.” The Incident. There it was again, mention of it out of the blue. It shook Carson to the core, he usually prepared himself thoroughly if he knew it was going to be apart of an upcoming conversation. Shutting himself of from the thoughts and anger that went through his brain whenever it was mentioned. He forced himself to focus singularly on what the Admiral was saying, he didn't want to be seen as a liability on his first day. He zoned back in as Ktell was trying to explain what he wanted from a Security standpoint, "...people on Earth were killed and we do not know who or why did it, which means, Security of Mars is going to paramount… no one gets in or out without permission. This place is to be locked down, we’re going to need systems that check everyone and everything coming and going… right now, I could fly a ship to Mars without being challenged.” Carson nodded, it was, sadly correct that the security of the facility and planet was woeful. He'd seen it himself upon reviewing some of the documentation available to him in the offices earlier on in the morning. Ktell wasted no time explaining that he also wanted the rejuvenation of the Mars Defence Perimeter to be a top priority. Not only key in defending Mars, but the entire sector, the MDP was a big piece of the defence of Starfleet to be handing over to a couple of Ensign Junior Grades. "Ensigns, Admiral I have one question initially, I think we need to meet review what needs to be done and divide the work into thirds assisting each other as needed" Jackson said almost immediately after Admiral Ktell had asked whether any of them had questions for him. Before he could say that he felt that was a conversation for later, Ensign Flagg did that for him whilst flashing a smile at Ktell. (Reply Ktell) She then went on to pose the questions she wanted answers too. “I do have a couple of questions. First all can we have clear rules of engagement for the base? So we can act as needed with seeking your authorisation for your every infraction.” Darpeg jumped in at this point suggesting a minefield as a form of interplanetary defence. Carson thought to himself that a minefield would probably cause just as many issues as it would be useful in defending them from attacks, but he stayed silent for the time being. This part of the job was not his specialism, so he would sit back, watch, learn and intercede if he needed to. “I see that the systems to be genius lack maintenance, are we expecting replacements or should we re-purpose systems as we require. I sure some disused labs would have the sensors to get a good internal grid up and working.” Flagg said, as she brought up some information on the PADD in her hand. Carson piped in, "Having already taken a look at what we have to work with, I'd have to agree with you completely." He said nodding to Flagg and then turning to the Admiral, "If we're aiming to make this one of the most secure facilities within Starfleet, we are going to need to work closely with Engineering personnel and put in several orders for parts if we're to succeed. How likely are we to receive everything we need? I like the idea of stripping other areas of the facility to help us secure the base temporarily, but longer term..." A lot of the tech in there is…I don’t know, fifty years old at least. That’s just the things that work.” “I’m assuming our first major assignment will be to fix it up.” Kasian spoke (Reply Ktell) “We will probably need to have a look at out medical supplies take inventory. It is a fairly big unit I’m sure there and outdated supply closet or two somewhere.” “Agreed. Admiral, just how much out on limb are we here? We’ll need parts…diagnostic equipment....I’m hoping more nursing and other ancillary staff, are we on our own, or do we have a supply chain from HQ” (Reply Ktel, any on runabout) (Posted by Mark) (Runabout – Rear Cabin - Admiral Remae Ktell – 15:06) The runabout took off again, this time is was trip number 4. It was the turn of the Senior Pilot/CONN Officers and there were two this time listed on the rosters. The pilot resumed the course he had followed before, the grand tour of the facility had begun and after allowing some time for quiet, he spun his chair in a different direction this time, Remae faced the two of them before looking at his PADD before speaking. “Ensigns, as Senior Pilot Officers, I am putting you in charge of the 1st Fighter Wing of Mars. There has never been one before, so you are starting from scratch. We have a few Peregrine class fighters in launch hangers onboard the Starbase, on the surface and in mobile hangers. We need a lot more.”, he said, passing each a PADD with specifics. “You are to immediately start a Combat Air Patrol around Mars, expanding out as far as you want within the limits of Sector 001. If something enters the system, I want it intercepted, identified and checked. You’ll have to coordinate with the new Mars Defence Permiter, which is nothing more than an idea at this stage, but ideas are where things start to happen.”, he said looking at them both for a moment. “Most of your pilots, as in most of the personnel of Mars are inexperienced and will need training before they are ready. In the meantime, do your best.”, he added before looking at another PADD. “In addition to the flight patrols, you’ll also have the additional duty of not only putting a small wing of fighters onboard our new ship, the USS Republic but also, CONNing her as well.”, he transferred the information to their PADDs. “Any questions, Ensigns?”, he asked looking at them both for a moment. (Reply from Williams x 2, Any) (Posted by Anthony Keen) (Runabout – Rear Cabin – Ensign (J.G) – Ire Williams – 15:09) “Ensigns, as Senior Pilot Officers, I am putting you in charge of the 1st Fighter Wing of Mars. There has never been one before, so you are starting from scratch. We have a few Peregrine class fighters in launch hangers onboard the Starbase, on the surface and in mobile hangers. You’ll have to coordinate with the new Mars Defence Permiter, which is nothing more than an idea at this stage, but ideas are where things start to happen.” Ire paused for a moment making the calculation. ~So it’s one fighter squadron which is 36 pilots. If we push our luck with the Peregrine’s that’s 36 fighters in twelve flights of three on a 24 hour rotation. Wish we had more~ “Most of your pilots, as in most of the personnel of Mars are inexperienced and will need training before they are ready. In the meantime, do your best.” ~Probably as inexperienced as we are~ “In addition to the flight patrols, you’ll also have the additional duty of not only putting a small wing of fighters onboard our new ship, the USS Republic but also, CONNing her as well.” ~Great we have fighters on the ship as well~ “Any questions, Ensigns?” “Sir do you know if we will get access to more modern fighters down the line?” (Reply Ktell) “Also one fighter unit is a small amount of craft for a defence of the system. Do you know when we might expect more pilots Sir?” (Reply from Trip, Ktell, Any) (Posted by Robbie) (Runabout – Rear Cabin - CONN, ENS JG Trip Williams - 15:10) Trip listened intently as the Admiral began detailing his expectations. He wasn't necessarily excited about manning a fighter wing or even flying a fighter. But the prospect of fly the Republic, that perked his interest. He wanted to be an explore, not a fighter pilot, but perhaps those days were over for Starfleet. “Any questions, Ensigns?”, he asked looking at them both for a moment. Before Trip could ask any questions, Ire chimed in with his. Sir do you know if we will get access to more modern fighters down the line?” (Reply Ktell) “Also one fighter unit is a small amount of craft for a defence of the system. Do you know when we might expect more pilots Sir?” (Reply Ktell) Before Ire could ask another question Trip piped up, "Also, do we expect to do much exploring or is the Republic merely here for defensive purposes? (Reply Ktell) "What about star charts, navigational data, and the like, are they up to snuff or do we need to do some mapping?" (Reply Ktell) "How soon would you like the first patrol to commenc after we get everything organized and how many patrol sweeps per day would you like? (Reply Ktell) (Reply Ktell, Ire) (posted by Will Banowsky) (Starfleet Martian Ground Facilities – Outside the Landing Platforms - Admiral Remae Ktell – 16.09) “I see.”, said the Admiral looking up at the bear heading towards him. Other Engineers were around the Admiral as they stood around waiting. “Ensign Grt, I take it?”, he said to the 10-foot bear. Gerratlian’s were rare but even Remae had heard of them before. He looked around the other officers for a moment and he noted someone missing. He wasn’t an officer, not an Ensign but Remae noted the name, CPO Castile. “Admiral Remae to Castile, Chief, your presence is required at Landing Pad Alpha, now.”, he said without barking the order but hopefully, an urgent tone. “Mr Grt, after you.”, he said pointing towards the runabout… he wasn’t going to try and force the Engineers in first, they solved problems… they could solve putting a 1.3-tonne bear onto a Federation Runabout, quickly. (Runabout – Rear Cabin - Admiral Remae Ktell – 16:15) The runabout took off again, this time is was trip number 5. It was the turn of Engineering and there were six this time listed on the rosters including a bear who had managed to squeeze onboard. The pilot resumed his normal course and headed for the first spacedock. “Ensigns, this is a quick run around Mars and her facilities plus, this is a briefing from me to you about what’s going to happen and I wanted the chance to meet you all.”, he said after successfully spinning his chair around. “Not only is it a mess across the board, on all facilities, the station, the surface, its also now your job to check out all 30 spacedocks and see where we are at.”, Remae pressed a button on his PADD and transferred the full list to them all. NRPG: Apart from Dock One, the Republic, I am not telling you where things are and what condition they are in, its up to you, consider repairs, new ships, decommissioned ships or empty… have fun. RPG: “We are very much behind in our technology. As you may know, our Andorian agreement on their departure from the Federation meant we had to return their technology to them. We’ve been developing replacements but we’re done a less than stellar job. However, as our research on Mars comes to bear fruit, it’ll be up to you to make those inventions come to life, we’ll be testing on the USS Republic, and all being well, we’ll be deploying to the rest of the fleet.”, he said while he waited for this new information to sink in, he again starting speaking. “On top of all that, you can expect any number of ships to come to us for repairs, upgrades and who knows what else. However, I will tell you this, the USS Republic is going to be top priority for the Engineers, we need a working Starship. I’ll be heading over there tomorrow.”, he said considering that was enough information for the moment. “The station is also available but…”, he paused again before adding, “Its not a priority, it needs work too but with no command staff, I have no intention of sitting there alone…”, he added a little briskly. “Questions, Ensigns?”, he said to all and waited for them to reply. (Reply from Grk, Jacobs, Kental, Merek, Brown, Castile, Any) (Posted by Anthony Keen) (Runabout – Rear Cabin - OPs - Ensign Janey 'Cheif' Brown– 16:17) Janey squeezed into the rear of the runabout, she was surrounded by fresh faces, youthful faces. The last 25 years had been an interesting few for her, after leaving the Hades she had intended to enroll in the Academy but life got in the way leaving she unable to attend. Many years she wondered and eventually enrolled. Her beloved Starfleet very different to the one she left. It was odd being called Ensign instead of Cheif, something she would need to get used to, but that was lost in the passage of the ghosts of the past remained there. As the Admiral spoke she made mental notes, she wasn't an engineer, she was a tinkerer, a ship builder, a designer and a fixer ~what am I doing here~ she thought to herself as yet another young face brushed her arm, she was old enough to be married to the Admiral let alone take orders from him. But she has skills, skills that put her here and on this journey. “Not only is it a mess across the board, on all facilities, the station, the surface, its also now your job to check out all 30 spacedocks and see where we are at.”, The padd in her hand bleeped and she looked down ~out dated, out dated, hardly worth saving, what?~ a familer name crossed the screen "Ghosts all of them" Janey said in a quiet voice as the Admiral spoke (Reply any iyw) “On top of all that, you can expect any number of ships to come to us for repairs, upgrades and who knows what else. "Sir, what exactly are your intentions, this list alone is too much for us, you want the fleet up and running but we can't do that without a full task force let alone the Republic, I'm aware of the Odesy class problems, but throw in a Galaxy Class and a Sovereign, when exactly do you want us to finish, another 25 years? Further more, you can't complete the task without the station operational, some of these ships don't have working life support I can't pull apart a computer core in an EVAC suit. We need to prioritize I understand but" (Reply any IYW) Janey stopped conscious she was currently lecturing an Admiral "Sir, what I'm saying is, I think we need to spilt the team and make the station and the Republic our priority" (Reply Ramae, any on ship) (Posted by mat) (Runabout – Rear Cabin - Engineering- Ensign (Jg) R'Vek Kental– 16:19) R'vek found a spot in the shuttle and took a seat quickly, he looked around and took in the faces around him. It appeared to be a good mix of ages a few young ensigns a middle age looking petty officer and a older looking female and then there was Grk who he still wasn't sure about. Guessing the age of a bear seemed like a silly attempt it wasn't a race he knew much about. He listened as the admiral spoke and started to from a todo list from his own visual inspection of the ground facility it needs lots of help and if the rest of the facilities were in the same shape it would be a long start to the assignment “Not only is it a mess across the board, on all facilities, the station, the surface, its also now your job to check out all 30 spacedocks and see where we are at.”, 30 spacedocks the words hit him like a ton of bricks surely they weren't all full but still the mars base already seemed understaffed and now you add more space docks to that this was shaping up to be one hell of a assignment. "Ghosts all of them" he heard the older woman say, a perk to being a reman was hearing. Splitting in teams of 3 would maximize performance, he knew he was just ensign but the admiral had made it clear he wanted them to be vocal. "Sir how many enlisted members are in the engineering department?" he asked (Reply Ramae, any on ship) The question might seem silly but part of his job as a officer was to delegate as much as it was to do work himself and knowing the strength of the department would be a big part for the all to be successful he knew they all held the same position and would work together to make this work but they also needed to know the full strength of the department. He looked around at the faces of the other officers to see who else might have ideas or questions (Reply Ramae, any) (Posted by Andrew Rock) (Runabout – Rear Cabin - Admiral Remae Ktell – 17:02) Remae half-strolled back to his runabout, this time is was trip number 6. It was the turn of the Intel Officers and there were two this time listed on the roster. The pilot was about to launch when Remae called a halt to the process. “Ensigns, you are Starfleet Intelligence Officers are you not? As assigned to me by Starfleet Command, even on my days as CO of the Spectre, I’ve not run across any Intel Officers before. Perhaps a trip around Mars isn’t appropriate?”, he said, he had a change of mind. “Jerry, take the rest of the day off.”, he said to the pilot as they disembarked the runabout. The doors closed on the conference room but it required a few moments of chair standing and table cleaning before they could begin. “Ensigns…”, he said before starting again, “What are you doing here?”, he asked, generally interested… he didn’t know where to begin but he added, “Very well – Starfleet Intelligence, fine… where do YOU want to begin?”, he said, sitting back in the chair.
