He stepped into the room and looked over at Rogers. He was sitting at his table doing professional research on his tablet. The office was compact, as one would expect for a newer counsellor, but he did his best to make it homey. He kept the lights somewhat dimmed, to give it a gentle atmosphere. The walls were decorated with posters of various sports figures from different planets and cultures. He kept a bobblehead of Sigmund Freud on his table, in a transparent attempt at humour.</span></p><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt; padding: 12pt 0pt 0pt;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial; background-color: transparent; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">“Counsellor. I have been told to report to you.”</span></p><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt; padding: 12pt 0pt 0pt;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial; background-color: transparent; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Rogers put his tablet down. “Well hello Lieutenant, I’ve been expecting you. Please sit down, what might you want to discuss today?” Rogers’ style was never to direct the conversation, but to to wherever the patient wanted, and however deep the patient wanted. From there he would make his evaluation and recommendation.</span></p><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt; padding: 12pt 0pt 0pt;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial; background-color: transparent; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Ire took his offered seat and looked across the desk at Rogers. </span></p><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt; padding: 12pt 0pt 0pt;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial; background-color: transparent; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">“I am here because I have been ordered to by the captain.”</span></p><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt; padding: 12pt 0pt 0pt;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial; background-color: transparent; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Rogers faintly smiled. “It sounds to me like you don’t want to be here.”</span></p><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt; padding: 12pt 0pt 0pt;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial; background-color: transparent; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">“I am here because I have been ordered to by the captain. For some people it helps to talk through what they’ve seen. Putting their experiences into words helps integrate their trauma. Others would prefer to let sleeping dogs lie, and that can work. At least for a time.” Rogers paused, looking for a response. </span></p><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt; padding: 12pt 0pt 0pt;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial; background-color: transparent; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Ire paused before he responded. </span></p><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt; padding: 12pt 0pt 0pt;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial; background-color: transparent; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">“I am a sleeping dogs type of person. Can I go now?”</span></p><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt; padding: 12pt 0pt 0pt;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial; background-color: transparent; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">“Yes you may. I’ll be making a report to Captain Williams and, in full transparency, I will let him know you are fit to continue in service, to the best of my knowledge. However, if you do need to talk I am here. It’s no failure if you do, you’ve seen a lot that would break most people.
